  • How to apply

The MCW is a one-year, full-time programme of study with entry in Semester Two only. You will enrol in CREWRIT 797 Creative Writing (120 points).

If you are writing a novel, short stories or creative non-fiction, you are expected to produce a portfolio of between 40,000 and 80,000 words. Poetry collections should have a minimum of 80 pages.

Class contact time and peer interaction are an essential part of the programme. In both semesters of the MCW, you must be able to attend two weekly classes – workshops and seminars. In the workshop you will submit drafts for discussion and give considered feedback to the other writers in your cohort. The weekly seminar is a forum for thinking and talking about writing. In these classes we discuss published work and explore the key issues of technique you need to consider in your work.

You'll also need to meet other requirements, including time limits and total points limits. See Postgraduate enrolment .

  • Getting started with writing

Getting words on the page can be hard. One way of getting started is ‘free writing’.

It involves:

  • Using a question prompt
  • Writing continuously and quickly
  • Not editing your own writing yet (incomplete sentences & mistakes are ok)

Video (2:34)

An example of free writing and reorganising it to create academic writing

Example of free writing

Example of free writing

Step from free writing to academic writing

While free writing gets words on the page, it then needs to be crafted into academic writing. Some important steps include:

  • Highlighting emerging concepts
  • Re-organising concepts from more general to more specific
  • Identifying areas for further reading
  • Refining, adding & deleting concepts

Hightlighting emerging concepts

With words on the page, you can identify concepts that are in your free writing and thinking.

Example of identifying concepts

Re-organising concepts & identifying areas for further reading

These concepts can now be reorganised in a ‘map’ to show relationships between them, such as concepts that are more general and those that are more specific.

Example of reorganised concepts

This kind of visual mapping also helps to identify areas for further reading, i.e. what you want to know more about for your research.

Example of refining, adding & deleting concepts

As you read more, you can adjust your map by refining concepts, deleting, adding, and/or repositioning them – as relevant to your research.

Refining concepts

Example of organised academic writing

Maps of concepts can then be used to structure your academic writing. This helps to orientate your reader to the main ideas and guide them towards the more specific details.

Example of organised writing

Phillips, who earned an MFA in 1978, was recognized for her novel Night Watch . The Pulitzer judges described the book as “a beautifully rendered novel set in West Virginia’s Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in the aftermath of the Civil War where a severely wounded Union veteran, a 12-year-old girl, and her mother, long abused by a Confederate soldier, struggle to heal.”

Yiyun Li, who graduated with a Master of Science in 2000 and two MFAs (fiction and nonfiction) in 2005, was a finalist in fiction for her book of short stories Wednesday’s Child . Li’s short stories and novels have won numerous awards, including the PEN/Hemingway Award for A Thousand Years of Good Prayers and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction for The Book of Goose . She currently serves as director of Princeton University’s creative writing program.

Additionally, two alumnae were recognized as finalists for the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry:

Jorie Graham, who graduated with an MFA in 1978 and won a Pulitzer in 1996 for The Dream of the Unified Field , was named a finalist for To 2040 . Graham, one of the most celebrated poets of her generation, is a former longtime faculty member in the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Among her poetry collections are The End of Beauty , Place , and Sea Change . She currently is the Boylston Professor of Oratory and Rhetoric at Harvard University.

Robyn Schiff, who graduated with an MFA in 1999, was named a finalist for Information Desk: An Epic , a book-length poem in three parts set in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Schiff, who has been a visiting faculty member in the UI Department of English, also is the author of Worth , Revolver , and A Woman of Property , which was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. She teaches at the University of Chicago and co-edits Canarium Books.

Pulitzer Prizes are awarded annually to honor achievements in journalism, literature, and music. See the full list of 2024 Pulitzer winners .
