A Mayo Clinic medical laboratory scientist uses a microscope

Medical Laboratory Scientist

What does a medical laboratory scientist do.

A medical laboratory scientist (MLS), also known as a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist, works to analyze a variety of biological specimens. They are responsible for performing scientific testing on samples and reporting results to physicians.

Medical laboratory scientists perform complex tests on patient samples using sophisticated equipment like microscopes. The data they find plays an important role in identifying and treating cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and other medical conditions. It is estimated 60 to 70 percent of all decisions regarding a patient's diagnosis, treatment, hospital admission, and discharge are based on the results of the tests medical laboratory scientists perform.

Scope of practice

Medical laboratory scientists collaborate very closely with physicians and medical laboratory technicians in diagnosing and monitoring disease processes, as well as monitoring the effectiveness of therapy. Areas of medical laboratory training include microbiology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, transfusion medicine, toxicology, and molecular diagnostics.

Medical laboratory scientists have a wide variety of responsibilities and duties, including:

  • Examining and analyzing blood, body fluids, tissues, and cells
  • Relaying test results to physicians
  • Utilizing microscopes, cell counters, and other high-precision lab equipment
  • Cross-matching blood for transfusion
  • Monitoring patient outcomes
  • Performing differential cell counts looking for abnormal cells to aid in the diagnosis of anemia and leukemia
  • Establishing quality assurance programs to monitor and ensure the accuracy of test results
  • Overseeing the work of a medical laboratory technician

Medical laboratory scientist vs. medical laboratory technician

While similar, there are a few key differences between a medical lab scientist and a medical lab technician. They both work in the lab and perform tests on biological samples, however, a medical lab scientist typically has more education and is able to perform more involved lab work. A medical lab technician performs more of the routine lab work and is often supervised by a medical lab scientist.

Medical laboratory scientist vs. medical laboratory assistant

A medical laboratory assistant is a subgroup of medical laboratory technician. They are responsible for preparing biological specimens, recording information, and perform more of the lab maintenance tasks such as cleaning equipment and stocking supplies. A medical laboratory scientist will work with a medical laboratory assistant by analyzing their prepared specimens and relaying information for them to record.

Work environment

Medical lab scientists work in hospitals, clinics, forensic or public health laboratories, as well as pharmaceutical industries, biotechnology companies, veterinary clinics, or research institutions. Depending on the setting, their work hours may vary; but typically labs are run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This allows for flexibility in scheduling.

Medical laboratory scientists spend the majority of their time on their feet, analyzing test results in the lab.

Becoming a medical laboratory scientist

Successful medical lab scientists are effective communicators with a sound intellect and interest in science and technology. Excellent eye-hand coordination, dexterity, and visual acuity are important to skillfully perform and analyze tests.

Individuals who love science and research, but prefer to have little-to-no interaction with patients, would be a good fit for the medical laboratory scientist career.

Higher education requirements

After obtaining a high school diploma (or the equivalent), most will go on to obtain some level of higher education and training in order to become a medical laboratory scientist.

Common higher education requirements for medical laboratory scientist jobs include:

  • Completing a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science. A bachelor’s degree in a science or health-related field (e.g. chemistry or microbiology) may also be considered.
  • Completing a clinical laboratory program or internship through a hospital-based program or as part of their education
  • National certification as a medical technologist (MT), clinical laboratory scientist (CLS), or medical laboratory scientist (MLS)
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting

Certification and licensing

Most employers require medical laboratory scientists to obtain certification through an accrediting body, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) . After passing the credentialing exam, medical laboratory scientists (MLS) can practice under the credentials of MLS(ASCP)CM.

Licensure by state may also be required.

Career opportunities and outlook

The median salary for a medical lab scientist is $57,800, though salaries can range between $30,000-$79,000 depending on education, location, and previous experience.

Job growth and security are high for medical laboratory technicians and scientists. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , there is currently a shortage of medical lab technicians and scientists in many parts of the country which guarantees ample employment opportunities and sometimes higher salaries for graduates. With the volume of laboratory tests continuing to increase due to both population growth and the development of new types of tests, job opportunities are expected to increase faster than average with over 26,000 new positions expected to be available by 2030.

With additional training and experience, a medical lab scientist can become a department lead or lab manager. Others may seek specializations to advance their careers. Typically, a medical lab technician will progress to a medical lab scientist with more training.

Medical Laboratory Science Jobs  Where Do Medical Laboratory Scientists Work?

While many people may think medical laboratory scientists work solely in hospitals and outpatient laboratories, there are actually a wide array of job opportunities for people with a master’s degree in medical laboratory science.

Jay S. Feldstein, DO ‘81 , president and chief executive officer of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), and Karen Giddens, MLS(ASCP) , director of PCOM’s Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Science program , recently discussed the role of medical laboratory scientists, how to become a medical laboratory scientist and where these scientists may be employed during a recent episode of the PCOM Perspectives podcast .

Where Do Medical Laboratory Scientists Work?

Jobs for medical laboratory scientists are varied and not limited to hospitals and laboratories.

Medical laboratory scientists may also be employed in other clinical settings or even in academia. A practicing medical laboratory scientist for more than 20 years, Giddens has a wide variety of clinical and academic experience including working as a laboratory director of the Southern Interventional Pain Center , a pain management practice with locations in Georgia and Florida, and as a medical technologist at Colquitt Regional Medical Center in Moultrie, Georgia. In addition to her current role at PCOM, she has prior academic experience in which she applied her skills and knowledge in medical laboratory science as an adjunct professor at North Georgia Community College and as an assistant professor and director of the medical laboratory science program at Thomas University.

Though career opportunities exist outside of hospitals, Feldstein—who is board certified in emergency medicine and previously worked as an emergency room physician— emphasized the important role medical laboratory scientists play on a hospital healthcare team.

“People need to understand that physicians make a physical diagnosis based on the history and physical exam, but a lot of times you are very dependent upon the lab tests for your diagnosis and treatment,” Feldstein explained.

And in the emergency room, he added, time is of the essence.

“We’re the highest priority, we want it done quickly and we need to have confidence that the results we’re getting are accurate,” he said. “Laboratory scientists are as integral a part as any member of the healthcare team because inaccurate laboratory results can result in life or death situations from not only a diagnostic, but a treatment standpoint.”

According to Giddens, emergency room physicians are not the only healthcare providers who rely upon medical laboratory scientists for accurate and timely test results.

“Typically our orders are derived from physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, but we do interact with nearly every member of the healthcare team during that process,” she said.

In addition to interacting with nurses—who are often the primary point of contact—medical laboratory scientists also interact with pharmacists while monitoring certain medication levels, radiology technicians prior to administering certain contrast materials, operating room staff during surgery cases, as well as providers in specialty care areas including oncology, dialysis, pulmonology and environmental services.

The Medical Laboratory Science Degree Program at PCOM

The Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Science program is designed for students who want to work as medical technologists and those who are working in the field and want to add to their credentials.

PCOM offers a master's degree in medica laboratory science.

“The pre-professional track is designed for students wanting to enter the medical laboratory science profession for the first time” Giddens explained. “This is designed for someone who wants to be able to gain their certification and be eligible to work in hospitals and reference laboratories.”

The ideal student for the pre-professional program is one who holds a bachelor's degree in a biologic or chemical science has completed prerequisite coursework.

“These students will take courses during the first year which are hybrid, that is having an online didactic component coupled with once-a-month campus labs,” Giddens added.

View Audio Transcript

The post-professional track is designed for students who hold a degree from a NACCLS-accredited program in medical or clinical laboratory science and are certified by ASCP or AMT.

“These individuals would be interested in furthering their education to obtain positions such as supervisory, leadership or management roles,” Giddens said.

Both programs prepare students for a rewarding and exciting career in medical laboratory science.

“Laboratory science is a large part of medical diagnosis and treatment,” Feldstein said. “They are kind of the unsung heroes who are behind the scenes of healthcare and a very important part of the whole healthcare system.”

Lab week 2024: celebrating medical laboratory professionals.

April 14 - 20, 2024, is Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, an annual celebration to highlight and show appreciation for laboratory professionals, including those at the State Hygienic Laboratory (SHL) at the University of Iowa.

Lab Week graphic

Lab Week is sponsored by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science and coordinated by 17 national clinical laboratory organizations.

“At the State Hygienic Laboratory, our teams have demonstrated again and again that we are prepared to skillfully respond to evolving emerging public health threats, adapting to meet the changing needs of laboratory medicine and the evolution of diagnostic testing,” said Michael Pentella, SHL director.

Established in 1904, the SHL works closely with local, state, and federal partners to fulfill its mission in the Iowa Code to investigate and evaluate any issues that are in the interest of environmental quality and public health in the state. The lab serves all of Iowa’s 99 counties through disease detection, environmental monitoring, and newborn and maternal screening. Today, the SHL also quickly responds to infectious disease threats, including mpox, SARS-CoV-2, whooping cough, and much more.

“Our teams are continually forward-thinking in terms of taking continuing education classes to prepare us for the future challenges of laboratory medicine,” said Pentella. “We are proud of our role to help ensure that Iowa communities are healthy places to live, work, and play.”

“ The first blast at the Lubyanka metro station killed 22 people and wounded 12 . The second at Park Kulturi station left 12 dead and 7 wounded ,” reported AFP . Russian Federal Security Service chief Alexander Bortnikov has already blamed Chechen rebels for the attack, an explanation slavishly accepted by western media outlets like the BBC who are already running feature articles about the history of terrorism in Russia that completely fail to mention the FSB’s direct role in almost every major attack to have taken place over the last 10 years .

Since the explanation that two female suicide bombers with explosives strapped to their bodies were responsible for the bombing has come directly from the FSB , past history means we can only treat the official story with the utmost suspicion.

The notorious Russian FSB has a documented history of staging false flag events in order to accomplish political agendas .

update: bombs kill 12 in russia’s dagestan region from cnn : Twelve people – nine of them police officers – were killed Wednesday when two bombs exploded in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan , officials told CNN. Another 23 people, including 11 police officers, were hospitalized with wounds from the bombings, at least one of which was carried out by a suicide bomber, according to a spokesman for the Dagestan police and Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the Investigative Committee in the Russian prosecutor general’s office. It happened two days after female suicide bombers killed at least 39 people on the Moscow metro .
