Encourage Activity with Reading in PE!

Picture of Scott McDowell

As highlighted in an earlier post , all school staff members have opportunities to foster a love of learning through literacy or reading.  Physical education teachers are role models and often build meaningful relationships with all students.  Incorporating reading in PE with stories and children’s books provides an avenue to encourage creativity through movement, dance, and social interaction.

Books - Reading in PE

Years ago I listened to an outstanding professional at the Illinois Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance annual conference.  This master teacher shared with us one of my favorite activities to do each year during reading month, on Dr. Seuss’ birthday, or whenever you need a quick 5-minute warm up.

Each year, I read the book My Many Colored Days , by Dr. Seuss to students in grades K-2 .  It is a very short book with beautifully colored images, and only takes a few minutes to read!  The first time I read it to the students, I do not provide any additional directions other than listening.  After I finish, I explain to the children that we are going to use the story to move around the gym.  I flip through the pages again and ask students to share what the emotions, moods, and images might look like if we were to act them out.  Finally, I ask students to find safe space and have them prepare to listen to the story again while acting out each emotion through creative play.   I loudly read the story and pause before turning the page to allow for students to think and move.  Students are led throughout the book to be horses, birds, bees, and more.  The creativity comes alive with each child’s own interpretation of the mood and animal. Listen or watch the story.

Early elementary students love the opportunity to blend books and stories into movement!  It is no different than using music to lead movement and often will leave more to the imagination.  I encourage you to always read the book at least once before starting the activity if you have not read it to them previously.

Here are a few other examples of books to use, as well as quick outlines of activity ideas:

From Head to Toe , by Eric Carle

  • The book is perfect for a warm up activity as it is very low-impact.  Have students find space and perform the movements as you read.  Students can perform the stretches and actions in their own space.  Read it again and have students partner up to perform matching/mirroring actions!

Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See? , by Bill Martin/Eric Carle

  • Throughout the book, new animals are introduced.  Allow students to act out these actions in a safe space as you read the book.

Stomp! , by Ruth Paul

  • Kids love dinosaurs!  This book invites them to act out various locomotor movements (stomping, jumping, turning around, crawling, and more.)  Several pages require additional imagination and creativity!  A perfect task in their safe personal space but it also begs for the exploration of group work!

Pete the Cat And His Four Groovy Buttons , by Eric Litwin/James Dean

  • Pete the Cat is about the coolest cat around and students love the story.  The story has a reoccurring theme that can be read in a fun, rhythmic beat.  Create some basic dance steps for “My buttons, my buttons…”.  Ask students to act out emotions based on Pete’s button saga as you read and dance. Check out an audio/visual of this book !

Five Green and Speckled Frogs , by Priscilla Burris

  • Have students in one large group.  Number students off or come up with another way for students to know it is their turn.  Designate another area as the pool.  As you read students will hop to the pool and leave the original group.  In the end all students end up in the pool.  Also try in groups of five and have frogs leave their groups to go to center of playing area where a large pool party can form!

The bottom line is that there is no “one-way” to blend literacy and movement.  You can keep it simple by introducing one book each month to a class, or a bit more complex by increasing the frequency to multiple times a month. Students love both reading and movement, and like mint and chocolate, it just works.

Great ideas. Thanks.

Are there any good physical education story books for freshman high school students to read?

PHYSEDGAMES

…click a category above for great p.e. games, category: literacy, guardians of the galaxy.

Grade level: K-8 Equipment: Cones, Foam balls, Math/Word Cards Game Description: Another true winner of a game (awesome idea thanks to David Isenberg). This one is cross-curricular, or also AKA literacy/numeracy. A little bit of pre-game work needs to be done here, but not much. You need to make some cards out of paper. These could be math problems, word or vowel cards, geography, science, etc, depending what you want to accomplish. You’ll make 50-100 of these cards and place them down on the floor. Then you’ll make relay teams, and teams will try to collect the cards and place them in the right category on the answer sign. There will be guardians who are assigned to try to protect the cards though…it’s a super fun, non-stop action and learning game all in one!

Grade level: 1-8 Equipment: Paper Game Description: Line Math is another game that connects the two curricular areas of physical education with mathematics. Help solidify some math concepts while at the same time getting some movement skill development and exercise. Start by creating the numbers “1” to “5” written each on their own full size paper or poster. Have students start in a relay-style (small teams, maybe of 3 players, to minimize idle time). Place the number pages at different distances away from the starting line along one side of the gym (placing them at the intersections of floor lines is best). To start the game, the teacher yells out a math problem (varies in complexity depending on the age and level of the students). The first student in each line will then run the distance to the answer. For example, if “10-5” is called, the students run the distance to where the 5 is on the floor. Once back, the teacher yells out another equation, etc, etc. Try putting obstacles along the way to spice it up. Or have students hop/skip/gallop/etc instead of running. Quick little warm-up numeracy game to try out if you haven’t already!

Human Alphabet

Grade level: K-3 Equipment: None Game Description: Human Alphabet is a fairly popular early primary level game that gets kids spelling letters with their bodies. Very simply, the students move around in a space (choose a locomotion: run, skip, gallop, etc) and when the teachers calls out a letter (example: “L”) then the students must find the nearest person, quickly partner up, get down on the floor, and use their bodies to make the shape of the letter together to spell it. Then get them moving again and call out another letter. And again. And again! This game is another combination of movement skills and literacy. Play along to music, or place down obstacles on the floor to make it more interesting! Or try groups of 3, 4, or more – have them spell words.

Mental Math Warm-up

Grade level: 1-8 Equipment: None Game Description: Although this is not an actual game, it’s an interesting way to run a basic warm-up while also adding some mental sharpening skills. A warm-up for both the physical and mental! Read More →

Lilly Pad Math

Grade level: 1-5 Equipment: Colored spots (lilly pads), paper Game Description: Another active game that adds some math into the equation. Players will do some basic math as well as run, hop, skip, jump, and any other movement skills desired. Read More →

Grade level: 2-8 Equipment: Exercise ball Game Description: What’s better than rolling a ball around and spelling physical education words? OK well, probably alot of things… BUT this game gives players a chance to roll an exercise ball at friends in the middle who try to dodge it.  All you need is an exercise ball, a circle of friends, and a couple players in the middle. Heart Smart

Grade level: K-4 Equipment: None Game Description: Heart Smart ties together health smarts with physical activity (both are obviously important for everyone so why not give it a try!)  It’s a quick game that can be used as a warm-up or movement break. Read More →

Grade level: 2-8 Equipment: Letters on poster paper Game Description: Scrabble is a spelling game for P.E. A great way to incorporate literacy into your physical education program! Teams will set-up in a relay style, grab letters, spell words, and add up points. Movement, literacy, numeracy, and team-building all in one. Read More →

Math In Action

Grade level: 2-8 Equipment: Cones, 2 batons Game Description: Another math and physical education combo – this game matches up 2 teams, both of which need to be ready to use their mental math skills. The quicker the brain and feet are ready to work, the more points a team can earn. Or if you prefer to not have a point system, just let the players go at it. Read More →

Alphabet In Motion

Grade level: K-4 Equipment: Alphabet letter pages Game Description: This game enhances student physical literacy by creating active spelling activities in PE class. Another combination of movement and literacy, in which students will run around from letter to letter, spelling out different words. Add in some exercises as well, and push for both a strong physical and mental workout! Read More →

Let’s Get Physical: Reading and Movement

physical education reading assignments

By: John Helgeson

We often assume that by the time they walk through our doors, middle school students know how to read well. Yet, that’s not always the case. And with the complex text requirements of the Common Core State Standards, middle school students need frequent instruction and practice in their reading comprehension skills.

A variety of teaching strategies can engage students in the reading process by incorporating movement and activities.

Just the Highlights

Using a road construction analogy, have students highlight text using a variety of colors to help identify areas of strengths and weaknesses.

Green:  Students use this color for pre-reading strategies. As students are warming up their minds, they are examining the text features, including the title, pictures, charts, and captions. Students highlight each of these text features, including the first paragraph of the text, in green. After highlighting, they make inferences or predictions based on these features and the background knowledge they have about the topic.

Blue:  Students use the blue highlighter (representing the blueprint of the road design) to establish the purpose of the selection. Just as the blueprint is the foundation for roadwork, the purpose—whether teacher-directed or student-directed—is the foundation for reading the text. A teacher-directed purpose may include reading a narrative and looking for evidence of suspense. A student-directed purpose may include answering a student-posed question based on the title and first paragraph. As students read the text, they highlight in blue, parts of the text that relate to the purpose. During a close-reading of the text, this step occurs during the first reading of the selection.

Yellow:  The yellow highlighter represents the yellow of the stoplight, so students use it during the during-reading process when they pause to make inferences, ask clarifying questions, and examine the author’s tone or mood. In the margins, students may take notes as they interact with the text. During a close-reading of the text, students complete this process during the second reading of the selection.

Orange:  The during-reading process also involves students working through several fix-it strategies to help them comprehend the text. Orange represents road construction in the analogy and identifies areas of the text where students need a “fix” in their comprehension. This process can be done at the same time as the during-reading process, or it can be done after the second reading of a close-read when students go back to the text and highlight areas they don’t understand.

Pink:  Students use the pink highlighter to indicate analysis of the text—it actually represents the red of a stoplight. Once students have finished reading a text, they need to take a longer period of time to stop, reflect, and evaluate what they have read. During this stage, students analyze the text, make connections to other texts, examine symbolism, or identify themes. Students may also go back to areas of the text that were highlighted with multiple colors and analyze why these areas stood out compared to other parts of the text.

Throughout the highlighting process, teachers should model and explicitly teach the reading strategies emphasized during each phase. Teachers also should include opportunities for students to discuss the text. These opportunities can occur throughout the process, but are invaluable at the end of the reading as students analyze all components of the reading process and engage in the reflective process. Socratic Seminars can help foster the reflective process.

Get Up, Stand Up

Reading is an active process. The brain is engaged—and the body can be as well. Active reading can happen in seats with students quietly reading the texts in their hands, or it can be taken literally as students engage in physical activity during the reading process. Adding movement before intense moments of studying and providing physical activity breaks throughout a lesson can help students engage more with the lesson.

For example, to establish background knowledge as a before-reading strategy, prepare a list of questions associated with the content of the text. At the beginning of class, ask all students to stand. Then, call on students randomly to answer the questions. If the student answers the question correctly, he or she can sit down. Then ask another student to repeat the answer or build on the answer. If the student answers correctly, he or she sits down. This activity continues until all questions have been answered. However, at any time, you can tell all the students to stand again. The up-and-down movement helps warm-up students’ minds for deeper thinking later on.

Eric Jensen, in  Teaching with the Brain in Mind , suggests physical activity helps students stay focused during instruction, which can increase their memory recall. Maintaining student focus through physical activity helps break the monotony of seated reading and helps struggling readers feel more confident and stay on-task.

To break up the monotony of seated reading work, call on students to create a visual tableau of what they have just read. Students think about a character or element of the plot. Then, working alone, in pairs, or in small groups, they create a frozen picture with their bodies. A whole-group discussion of the tableaus helps students recall key elements of the plot, setting, or characters.

Physical movement can help students deal with anxiety, reduce stress, and increase motivation. In a variation of the stand-sit activity, pose a question, have students perform an activity for 30 seconds, such as marching in place, then call on a student to answer the question. This builds wait time, allowing students to manage anxiety about the possibility of being called on to answer a question.

Movement, Large and Small

These are just a few of the many ways teachers can add movement to a reading classroom. The visual and small movements involved with highlighting the text, and the larger physical movements of warm-up and brain breaks helps students focus, recall, and manage their emotional needs. In addition, physical movement helps struggling and unmotivated students experience more success as they tackle more complex texts.

This article was so helpful! As a pre-service teacher, I am trying to imagine applicable ways that I can engage students with the reading process. The idea of having students use highlighters to mark and engage with the text in a variety of ways is nice, though I think I will need to start off with a smaller set of highlighters/ purposes, as it sounds difficult to start students off with 5 different ways of highlighting a text. Still, the idea of having students mark pre-reading strategies, the purpose for selecting the article, during-reading processes, and the analysis of the text sounds helpful! My favorite idea is having students move around (standing up to sitting down, creating tableaus) before and after the reading so that students engage with ideas surrounding the text. This is a great way to get students interested and engaged in the text. I can’t wait to try these strategies in my own classroom!

This article is quite helpful in helping students learn how to engage with reading better and become better readers. I like the way the highlighters mark to engage students with the text in different ways. I also like the pre-reading strategies as well to help students get ready for more difficult text. This was a good article.

4 Strategies for Integrating Classroom Content Into Physical Education

Advertisement Teambuildr Take Your PE Program to the Next Level

With an increased emphasis on standardized test scores, non-tested subjects — such as physical education — experience cuts in both class time and budget. Now more than ever, it is important for us physical educators to advocate for ourselves, the field, and most importantly, our students.

Establishing collaborative relationships and integrating classroom content into physical education is a great way to advocate. Collaboration not only strengthens the relationships between teachers, but it also helps students make meaningful connections between content across subject areas.

Physical education is an excellent setting to integrate concepts from the classroom, whether the subject is English, language arts, math, science, or social studies. For starters, movement is exciting and fun for the students. Further, research has found a link between physical activity and improved learning.

Activity Templates for Integrating Classroom Content

Because we are not experts in classroom content, knowing where to start can present a challenge. That’s where this article comes in!

We created four activity templates to help integrate any classroom content into physical education. The templates are versatile in that they can be used as warm-ups, as reviews of previous knowledge (in either subject), or as the focus of a complete lesson.

The four templates have been named If – Then , Knowledge Tag , Out and Back , and Dice Roll and Solve .

  • Knowledge Tag takes your basic tag concept and adds an exciting classroom content challenge. The student who gets tagged must correctly complete the task on the index card before resuming play. Successful completion of the task can result in the student being freed/unfrozen or the student becoming the tagger. Spelling words, math problems, state capitals, countries and their continents, shapes, formulas, and body parts are examples of content you can put on the index cards.
  • Out and Back is a relay-style activity aimed at pairing locomotor or ball skills with problem solving tasks. Small teams of students perform designated tasks (e.g. run, skip, dribble) across the gym to collect a card from the team pile. Once all cards are collected, each team works together to complete the classroom content task. For example, students can dribble a soccer ball down, pick up a card with a word on it, and then dribble the ball back to their next teammate in line. Students then sort the words into piles based on their part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.).
  • The integrated activity of Dice Roll and Solve allows teachers to connect math with physical education, and it is fairly easy to instruct. You need insertable or write-on foam dice for this activity. One die has the math problem on it, and the other die represents the movement task. The teacher or the students roll the dice and then solve the math problem. The answer to the math problem represents the number of repetitions the students complete the movement task. A great way to use this activity is with warm-up exercises.

The purpose of these activities and our article is to provide physical education teachers with simple advocacy strategies to support the school mission by reinforcing classroom content.

Through these strategies, it is our hope that physical education teachers create positive relationships with their teaching colleagues, improve their status within the school, and further contribute to student learning.

To learn more about these four strategies, read our article titled “ Strategies for Connecting Activities in Physical Education and the Classroom ” in the November/December 2019 issue of Strategies .
