Kansas Cosmos

map of Kansas with overlay of solar system.

KSI is coordinating a multi-disciplinary project where students are creating a to-scale version of the solar system that maps over the state of Kansas. Imagine driving on I-70 across the state and having this app tell you where you are in the solar system, when you reach the orbit of each planet/object, and the relative size and other interesting facts about each object. In 2020 students began designing, coding, researching, writing, and building the application. We soft-launched the app/website on Kansas Day, Jan. 29, 2021, and will continue building and updating it throughout the spring semester. Read about our progress or visit kansascosmos.org .

In ‘zhúje ‘waxóbe/Sacred Red Rock Project

Kansas Studies Institute is a collaborator on the Mellon Foundation grant project In ‘zhúje ‘waxóbe/Sacred Red Rock. This two and a half year project builds on the work of the “Between the Rock and a Hard Place”/Robinson Park project, on which KSI also collaborated. Members of the Kaw Nation, the City of Lawrence, University of Kansas, Kanza Heritage Society, and others will relocate In ‘zhúje ‘waxóbe, a 28-ton red Siouxan quartzite boulder from Robinson Park in Lawrence, to the Kaw Nation’s Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park near Council Grove. Interpretation, community engagement, and the development of educational materials will also be part of this project.

Kansa, an earthwork by Stan Herd, was completed on the JCCC campus in April 2013

  • Tai Edwards shared a Big Idea on the Humanities Kansas website: How Should We Honor Someone's Military Service?
  • Recording oral histories. This began with Vietnam-era veterans in “Kansas Stories of the Vietnam War” – a Humanities Kansas project. KSI has continued this work, recording oral histories with veterans of any era. KSI also partnered with Special Olympics Kansas on “Celebrating Inclusion Since 1970: A Special Olympics Kansas Oral History.”
  • Production assistance for Kansas-themed documentaries.
  • Hosting lectures on a variety of Kansas topics, such as depletion of the Ogallala aquifer, artistic representations of Kansas, and Quindaro Townsite preservation.
  • Commissioning and maintenance, including prairie burning, of Stan Herd’s “earthworks” installation titled  Kansa , on the southwestern side of the JCCC campus.
  • Traveling with students and teaching coursework on the state.
  • Student internships involving a range of opportunities, including researching and designing installations in celebration of JCCC’s 50th anniversary; publishing peer-reviewed scholarship; and assisting in the Johnson County Trails Project that posts historic signage around the county’s hiking trails.
  • Annual programming on Kansas Day, Jan. 29 – the date Kansas became a state.

K-State partners with University of Kansas Health System to support rural health care, communities

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - Kansas State University and the University of Kansas Health System announced a partnership that will involve supporting rural health care and communities.

On Thursday, April 4, K-State and the University of Kansas Health System provided a news conference about their partnership and what it will look like in the next six months to a year.

The partnership is a first-of-its-kind collaboration that brings together the land-grant mission and statewide presence of K-State through K-State Research and Extension with the expertise and experience of the state’s only academic health system.

“Our partnership with the University of Kansas Health System is just the beginning,” said Jessica Gnad, director of K-State 105. “It’s a way for us to collaborate and to empower Kansans to find local solutions that work in their local community.”

Individuals from K-State and UKHS are putting their heads together to come up with a plan for how this new partnership will work by looking at communities across Kansas.

Through the K-State 105 partnership, K-State and the University of Kansas Health System will work with the statewide K-State Research and Extension network to meaningfully address healthcare challenges, particularly in rural Kansas.

Two graduate students, Jaymi Peterson and Ramona Weber, were K-State award recipients at the annual Capitol Graduate Research Summit at the State Capitol in Topeka.

MANHATTAN — Two Kansas State University graduate students were recognized for their outstanding research poster presentations at the annual Capitol Graduate Research Summit , or CGRS, held at the State Capitol in Topeka on March 21. Ramona Weber, doctoral student in health and human sciences specializing in kinesiology, Hanover , presented "Effect of dietary nitrate supplementation on tumor oxygenation." Weber's major professor is David Poole, university distinguished professor of kinesiology. Jaymi Peterson, doctoral student in food, nutrition, dietetics and health, Chanute , presented "Effects of pH and wet cooking on sorghum starch digestibility, phenolic profile, and cell bioactivity." Her major professor is Weiqun (George) Wang, professor of food, nutrition, dietetics and health. Both Peterson and Weber received $500 scholarships from the Graduate School for their presentations. The CGRS — coordinated between Kansas' six state universities — is an annual showcase in which graduate students present posters of their research to state legislators and the public to showcase their work and promote the value of graduate education. This year, more than 40 students discussed the implications their work has for issues of interest to Kansas legislators and residents. Outstanding presentations received awards from the participating institutions. Additionally, BioKansas presented three awards. During her presentation, Weber spoke with faculty and graduate students from the University of Kansas Medical Center about the impact of breast cancer, a disease that affects approximately one in eight women. Weber said learning about the research and experiences of graduate students from other departments and universities demonstrated the value of interdisciplinary collaboration. They discussed the dietary aspects of her research, and how it could help improve the chemotherapy process. Prior to the summit, Weber contacted State Rep. Lisa Moser, who represents the 106th District which includes Hanover. Moser visited with Weber at the Capitol and discussed Weber's ongoing research in breast cancer, as well as the impact of breast cancer in rural communities. Weber noted that effective communication of research results, both within the scientific community and the public, is integral to her doctoral training. "There is a significant gap between the public and scientists, which often results in misinformation," she said. "Impactful communication of research can bridge this gap and foster a trusting relationship, enabling continued support for the advancement of science." Peterson also had the opportunity to speak with legislators. She said the process of preparing her research presentation taught her the value of learning to discuss her work in a variety of formats for different audiences, so that it can be relatable to everyone. "One legislator spoke with me in depth," she said. "They were interested to learn about their potential uses for health-foods. When I explained to them that a majority of the public doesn't know what sorghum is or how it could be potentially leveraged for the Kansas economy, the legislators were very interested to learn more." She said the legislators who she spoke with seemed surprised that, according to Peterson's research, cooking food samples for 10 minutes improved starch digestibility. By doing this, the nutritional profile of sorghum for food applications could improve. "They were pleased to learn more about sorghum and how we could use this undervalued cereal grain to better the Kansas economy," Peterson said. "They agreed with me that to better leverage sorghum for Kansas farmers, it is important to first educate the public on sorghum polyphenols and their potential health benefits." Weber and Peterson were two of ten K-State graduate students who presented their research at this year's CGRS were selected to represent K-State based on their presentation at the university's Research and the State poster forum, which took place Oct. 24. They included Savannah Stewart, doctoral student in food science, Valley Center ; Holly Ellis, master's student in architecture, Grimes, Iowa ; Adi Siegmann, master's student in human development and family science-couple and family therapy, Detroit, Michigan ; Andrea Salazar, doctoral student entomology, Ecuador ; Manivannan Selladurai, doctoral student in grain science, India ; Amirsalar Bagheri, doctoral student in chemical engineering, Iran ; Reza Nematirad, doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering, Iran ; and Fidelis Onwuagba, master's student in geology, Nigeria . Study Objectives: The study aimed to investigate sex differences in the relationship between sleep quality (self-report and objective) and cognitive function across three domains (executive function, verbal memory, and attention) in older adults. Methods: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 207 participants with normal cognition or mild cognitive impairment (89 males and 118 females) aged over 60. The relationship between sleep quality and cognitive performance was estimated using generalized additive models. Objective sleep was measured with the GT9X Link Actigraph, and self-reported sleep was measured with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Results: We found that females exhibited stable performance of executive function with up to about 400 minutes of total sleep time, with significant declines in performance (p = 0.02) when total sleep time was longer. Additionally, a longer total sleep time contributed to lower verbal memory in a slightly non-linear manner (p = 0.03). Higher self-reported sleep complaints were associated with poorer executive function in females with normal cognition (p = 0.02). In males, a positive linear relationship emerged between sleep efficiency and executive function (p = 0.04), while self-reported sleep was not associated with cognitive performance in males with normal cognition. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the relationships between sleep quality and cognition differ between older males and females, with executive function being the most influenced by objective and self-reported sleep. Interventions targeting sleep quality to mitigate cognitive decline in older adults may need to be tailored according to sex, with distinct approaches for males and females.

Dr. Mark Clements Receives JDRF Award to Study Psychosocial Technology for Youth with Type 1 Diabetes

April 03, 2024.

Headshot of Mark A. Clements, MD, PhD

Mark A. Clements, MD, PhD

Rick & cathy baier family endowed chair in endocrinology; medical director, pediatric clinical research unit; professor of pediatrics, university of missouri-kansas city school of medicine; clinical assistant professor of pediatrics, university of kansas school of medicine.

Mark Clements, MD, PhD , Endocrinology , received a two-year, $710,434.16 award from JDRF International for his project, “Spotlight-AQ 2 Center RCT,” to study whether the use of Spotlight-AQ, a biopsychosocial pre-visit planning technology, will benefit adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Dealing with T1D can cause psychosocial burdens (depression, diabetes distress, anxiety, fear of hypoglycemia, family conflict) in adolescent and young adults. If not addressed, these issues can result in negative outcomes for individuals with T1D. Routine clinical visits often focus on biomedical outcomes and disease management, and it can be difficult for health care providers to provide tailored support for psychosocial-related issues.

“While we have made some progress in assessing psychosocial concerns during our pre-visit planning process, the approach offered by the Spotlight AQ tool has the potential to accelerate our progress in this important area,” said Dr. Clements.

Data from Spotlight-AQ studies in adults with T1D indicate the use of the technology had positive outcomes for participants. Dr. Clements will study whether adolescents and young adults with T1D could also benefit from a youth- and young adult-focused version of the technology. His team will collect initial data on the acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of Spotlight-AQ in this population. The team will use Spotlight-AQ to identify patient-defined needs to guide topics discussed in two, regularly scheduled clinic visits. His team will measure:

  • Acceptability to youth/young adults with T1D, their parents and providers
  • Feasibility (completion rate for all components)
  • Effectiveness (glycemic control, psychosocial outcomes, and engagement with self-management)

Spotlight-AQ was co-designed by persons with T1D and applies a biopsychosocial theoretical model of care. It includes electronic assessments for the person with diabetes to complete and a clinician toolkit on how to respond at the point of care to identified needs. Previous research has shown that the most common patient priorities are knowledge gaps and psychological burden. Often, it is possible for clinicians to address these issues in routine care. By applying an evidence-based and patient-centered approach to pre-visit planning, Spotlight AQ reduces the chances of problems persisting or worsening and requiring professional psychology support.

Fsu researcher: digital tools including ai alter consumer trust, purchasing decisions.

Colleen Harmeling, FSU’s Dr. Persis E. Rockwood Associate Professor of Marketing, points to photo filters, overly edited photos and other distortions of user-generated content as impediments to consumer trust. Harmeling credits a new study on the topic largely to University of Missouri-Kansas City assistant professor Rachel Hochstein, who studied under Harmeling as a marketing Ph.D. student at FSU before landing her faculty post.   Photo by Kallen M. Consumers who rely on blog posts, online reviews, testimonials and other user-generated content to inform their purchase decisions require digital platforms that minimize suspicion of missing or misrepresented content.

So says Colleen Harmeling , a Florida State University College of Business researcher who points to photo filters, overly edited photos and other distortions of user-generated content as impediments to consumer trust and, in turn, as potential barriers to the performance of products that users present and discuss in online platforms.

“Availability of certain features, including photo filters or the ability to delete content once you’ve posted it, dramatically impacts whether user-generated content affects brand performance or firm performance,” says Harmeling, FSU’s Dr. Persis E. Rockwood Associate Professor of Marketing and the co-director of the Ph.D. program’s major in marketing. “Those features don’t even have to be used to affect product performance. The mere presence of such features in a digital space affects consumer trust in that content for their purchase decision.”

Harmeling’s new study with Rachel Hochstein , an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Taylor Perko , who served as an FSU research assistant while earning her MBA from the College of Business, appears in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science .

The authors assert in their study that their findings reinforce the notion that digital platforms “serve as custodians of trust in modern society.”

Harmeling credits the study largely to Hochstein, who studied under Harmeling as a marketing Ph.D. student at FSU before landing her faculty post. Hochstein compiled a database of nearly 20 years of digital platform innovations, recording the timing of changes in user features such as photo filters across online platforms, including Facebook, Amazon and Twitter, now known as X. She combined the database with data, through a so-called meta-analysis, from 77 published studies on the effects of consumer-generated content on company performance.

Harmeling called it “a very significant study” that “I think has profound implications for how and what we trust as consumers, for how marketers engage with their consumers and how to increase the trustworthiness of the information that's being circulated about the brand.”

'Helping consumers make these judgments should be a priority of marketers, because suspicion of even single posts can erode trust in the entire body of user-generated content and sow uncertainty in consumers’ purchase decisions.'

“We’re very proud of Colleen, Rachel and Taylor’s work to develop strategies that promote trust and offset consumers’ concerns in a setting where it’s needed most,” said Michael Brady , director of Dr. Persis E. Rockwood School of Marketing and the Bob Sasser Professor of Marketing in the FSU College of Business. “Their study exemplifies our world-renowned faculty’s cutting-edge research, which asks crucial questions and seeks achievable solutions for the benefit of students, consumers and industries.”

The results showed ways in which those features influenced trust, distrust and purchasing decisions, the researchers said

“We found that trust can be violated if people believed that that their digitally presented content wasn't what unfolded in reality – that's where the photo filters come into play – or if there was missing data from their observable example,” Harmeling said. “If we suspect missing data, then we start to call into question whether the online user’s experience with a product is reflective of the population.

The researchers wrote that their findings also carry implications for social media influencers, who they say might want to avoid use of, for example, photo filters or overly edited photos and videos. “Focusing instead on live videos or real-time ‘story’ posts may be perceived as more trustworthy,” they wrote.

More importantly, the researchers urged marketers to help consumers distinguish “real versus fake or missing versus complete content.” Such judgments “require the ability to identify patterns in a body of user-generated content, recognize anomalies in the pattern and estimate the impact of truth-altering features on each online platform,” they wrote.

They added: “Helping consumers make these judgments should be a priority of marketers, because suspicion of even single posts can erode trust in the entire body of user-generated content and sow uncertainty in consumers’ purchase decisions.”

Harmeling also emphasized policy implications, especially amid the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence. The European Union’s AI Act, scheduled to take effect this year, will require labeling of deepfake  AI-generated photos, video or audio of existing people and places as artificially manipulated.

“We think of photo filtering as one of the first movers in AI, changing reality to something that’s slightly enhanced,” Harmeling said. “Now we have AI that’s much more advanced – replicating people’s voices, for example. I think there are numerous implications for this research and for further research down this path.”
