What’s your background?
I attended college to be a teacher, graduating summa cum laude and inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. After my career in teaching I was an editorial assistant for Golf Digest magazine, working as a proofreader and interfacing directly with writers and editors. With an international audience reading their publication, they had high expectations. Since then, everywhere I’ve worked I’ve caught mistakes. Because of that I’m constantly being asked to review materials, from letters written by company presidents to policy and procedures manuals.
How exactly do you go about proofreading a resume?
Some people have a natural ability to catch errors just by looking at a page of writing. I’m one of them and have always been that way. Even when I read a published books and novels, any mistake jumps out and bites me! I guess that’s a by-product of being a perfectionist. I’m an expert on rules of grammar, punctuation, subject and verb agreement, etc. And I love it!
What’s your pet peeve?
I’m amazed at the number of fonts, colors and tables jobseekers use as a way to catch someone’s eye. It makes their resumes really busy, distracting, and sometimes hard to read – the opposite of what they want to achieve. Many people don’t understand know how to consistently format their work. These resumes are the hardest to edit.
Do you have a great proofreading tip?
My best tip is “just do it”. It’s amazing how many people don’t. Whether it’s a resume, an email, or a thank you note you have to read over what you are sending! It’s one thing when you’re sending a text message, but anything that is going to someone you care about or need to impress should be read at least one more time again.
What resources do you use when you’re unsure about a word or punctuation?
I check the Internet. Many resumes I proofread are industry specific and contain technical words, so any time a company, society, group, association, school, etc. or even a word I don’t recognize is listed, I check for spelling and usage.

Where did you learn to write such powerful resumes.
I’ve been a recruiter for 20+ years and have worked with a lot of hiring managers. When I sit down to write a resume the first thing I think about is the target audience. Who is going to read the resume?…What’s their title?…What’s important to them? I put myself in their shoes and intuit what I’d be looking for in a resume if I was hiring. Then I build the resume with that in mind. Everything from the Summary section, bullet points, and personal interests is written to capture the attention of that decision maker.
You include personal interests? I thought you’re not supposed to do that.
99% of the resumes we write include personal interests. The fact no one else does it is why it works. It’s one of many things we do that make our resumes really pop. We don’t care if it’s unconventional, because it works. We’ve thrown away the resume writing rulebook which is what you must do if you want to stand-out.
What’s your biggest pet peeve when reading resumes?
When I see short dashes and long dashes between the dates of employment. It drives me bananas! It’s inconsistent and sloppy. I see it all the time. My all-time pet peeve is people who list their college education as a “B.S. degree”. Think about it. It may be factual but it doesn’t look right.
Is there a favorite resume you’ve written?
Wow! That’s a tough question. There have been so many. One that stands out is a resume I wrote for a women who suffered from negative self-talk. She had real doubts about herself and beat herself up all the time. When I presented the resume she nearly cried. For the first time she saw the beauty and impact of her work. Her confidence totally changed and she landed a terrific job. If you think your resume is just a document that gets your foot in the door you are mistaken. Resumes are powerful!
Why do you refer to the final Resume you deliver a Masterpiece?
There’s an age-old question asked of artists: how do they know when the painting is finished. Answer: They just know. As writers we have to know when the resume is finished – when a career story has been optimized and there’s nothing more to say or write. We know when they are done. That takes intuition and vision. We are artists as much as writers. I call our resumes Masterpieces, because they are.

The Phone Interview
The majority of my clients prefer the phone interview instead of completing my comprehensive Questionnaire. I prefer this as well because although my Questionnaire is very thorough, it doesn’t allow for deeper behavioral based questions based on impromptu responses to prior questions as we are speaking. Also, before conducting the 30-60 minute phone interview, I spend a good deal of time evaluating/analyzing my clients’ existing resumes to come up with very specific, targeted questions.

A resume’s primary purpose is to attract the attention of prospective employers and recruiters. An expert Resume Writer is likely to help you accomplish this. He/she possesses the ability to ask thought-provoking and behaviorally-based questions, uncover relevant data, and present that data in an aesthetically pleasing format that is enticing to the human eye while ensuring that key elements are also picked up by the “electronic eye”, i.e., Applicant Tracking System.
There are perhaps a hundred or so truly talented Resume Writers out of the several thousand currently employed by Resume Writing firms throughout the country. But there are only a handful of Resume Writing experts. You may be thinking that determining what distinguishes “good” from “expert” (and “poor”/”fair”/”decent”, etc., for that matter) is too personal, subjective, and opinion-prone to hold merit for serious discussion. And you would be correct in exercising a certain degree of skepticism. However, there are several ways to gauge a Resume Writer’s level of expertise, or lack thereof. They boil down to a Writer’s client success rate with employers and/or recruiter feedback. Is the résumé getting attention?
I recently was tasked with helping an established Financial Services Resume Writing firm recruit “elite Resume Writers”. This appeared simple at first — post a few ads, network a bit, and offer Writers above-market rates for their level of expertise. To my surprise, after vetting and interviewing many good Resume Writers, I narrowed my selection down to only 9 “experts”. Over many years, I’ve personally overhauled countless resumes that were written by professional Resume Writing firms where my clients had experienced little to no success in landing interviews once their “improved” resumes were delivered.
While I can methodically break down what constitutes a very good attention-grabbing, self-promotional marketing document (aka “resume”), the purpose of this article is to help you recognize an expert Resume Writer yourself:
1. Their Process
Are they requiring you to fill out an extensive “Questionnaire” or do they present the option of conducting a comprehensive phone interview in lieu of the questionnaire? If the former, they could be good or expert, but chances are they are not. In the case of urging a phone interview, there is a greater possibility their competency may extend to the “expert” level.
2. Their Industry Knowledge
In speaking with them, are you comfortable with their knowledge of your specific industry? Inquire as to how many resumes they have written in your field, and do not be reluctant to ask relevant field-related questions.
3. Are they TRULY listening?
Your initial conversation with a prospective Writer is critical. You are of course being courted, and will likely hear all of the reasons you should move forward with this particular Writer or Resume Writing firm; they are selling themselves to you. Make sure they are “Actively Listening” and doing more listening then talking. And make sure they address all of your questions and understand any concerns you may have.
4. Number of Clients They’ve Helped and Years of Experience
While there are good Resume Writers that are relatively new to the business (i.e., fewer than 5 years of experience and/or only a few hundred resumes crafted), as with most things, experience is always a key factor to consider. From what I’ve discovered in my pursuit to find exceptional talent, the handful of expert writers have each helped well over one thousand clients.
