Military Families and Their Sacrifices Essay
Being in a military is a hard task, yet having a family member that has joined the military and supporting them in their decision is, perhaps, even harder. The challenges that people in the military face on a daily basis are beyond excruciating, and knowing that one risks their life while meeting these challenges is unbelievably difficult. While the acts of heroism made by soldiers are not to be underrated, either, the great sacrifice of their families, who provide consistent support, are proud of their family members in the military, and put the needs of the state and its citizens before their own, deserve the recognition of their great sacrifice.
Watching family members leave to join the army and, possibly, go to war that may take their lives is a terrifying experience, yet the families of soldiers carry their burden with amazing strength and dignity. These families realize that soldiers consider the protection of their state and the people living in it as their duty, and, no matter how drastic the consequences might be, the courage of soldiers and their passion for justice is what keeps these families strong (Fallen US Soldiers, 2009).
It would be wrong to claim that positive attitude persists in military families. The ones that were not lucky enough and had to deal with the death of their loved ones admit that the pain of losing a family member is excruciating. The grief of the mothers and wives whose children and husbands became war casualties is sincere and profound, yet they continue to support the rest of the family members who are still willing to join the army. One might consider the situation irrational and barely sensible; however, it instead shows that, no matter how hard the challenges might be, standing firmly for what one believes in and providing support for the family members that are willing to make a difference is an incredibly brave decision to make.
The rare visits of soldiers mean that their families miss them incredibly. Indeed, while not being as agonizing as the necessity to deal with the death of a family member, short visits and the anguish may make the waiting a nearly impossible experience. However, the family members of soldiers show incredible strength by developing the ability to wait and feel proud of the passion that soldiers have for justice, peace, and safety of the community. The unique philosophy that helps military families survive and remain happy and positive is truly worth appreciation (Moelker, Andres, Bowen, & Manigart, 2015).
Although the acts of heroism of the soldiers that serve in the military and defend the country should not be overlooked, either, the sacrifice of their families must be appreciated as well. The threat of losing a family member as a war casualty is beyond terrifying, and the devastating sorrow through which the families that suffered this loss are put cannot possibly be embraced. Therefore, while often being unnoticed and unspoken of, the sacrifices of military families must be appreciated and recognized.
More importantly, military families require the support of the state and community, which means that the communication process between the state and local authorities and military families should be improved. As a result, it will be possible to show the appreciation for the great sacrifice that these families have made.

Honoring Sacrifice in War with Commitment to Peace
At Memorial Day, an Iraq veteran remembers soldiers lost—and the peace they won.
By: John Laganelli
Retired U.S. Army Colonel John Laganelli served as the deputy commander of the 10th Mountain Division’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team in Mahmoudiya, Iraq, in 2007. He helped lead his unit in partnering with the U.S. Institute of Peace and Iraqi counterparts to halt local factional warfare and bring peace to a region known as the “Triangle of Death.” Laganelli wrote this essay from his home in Florida.
Memorial Day for some is the unofficial start of summer. For others, it’s the day the pools open and for others still, a time to remember those service members who’ve given their lives to protect our country.
I prefer the latter. Three decades in the military has fostered a deep and personal understanding in me of the heavy price of freedom. The ongoing conflicts that our nation has endured since 9/11 illustrate the need for people willing to sacrifice for the greater good.
History has demonstrated adequately the difficulties of achieving peace—and, more importantly, lasting peace. Recent history has put a finer point on that lesson.
In 2006 and 2007, when the 2nd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (Commando) deployed to Iraq, 54 Commando soldiers gave their lives and 270 more were wounded. The brigade experienced on average 115 attacks a week and a portion of its area of operations was referred to as “The Triangle of Death.” However, by the end of the deployment, attacks were down to an average of 28 per week. From July 17, 2007, the brigade hadn’t lost a single soldier to hostile fire.
That reduction in warfare, and lives lost, was not accidental. During that deployment, the Commando Brigade partnered with USIP to facilitate a peace process, which culminated in a three-day gathering, in October 2007, of influential tribal sheiks from the Mahmoudiya District (Qada’a). That meeting would demonstrate that more than military power is required to end warfare.
The sheikhs’ goals were to consider the situation among the population of the Qada’a, to project objectives for Mahmoudiya over the next three years and to suggest courses of action that would enable the tribes to help the Qada’a move forward, to the benefit of all its people.
That dialogue laid a foundation for a peaceful reconciliation and the creation of an environment where coexistence, rule of law, governance, economic development, social well-being and security would reign over volatility, anarchy, and the influence of malign actors. In recent years, Mahmoudiya’s tribal and civic leaders have credited that 2007 agreement with helping their community rebuff the attempt by ISIS to extend its rule in their area.
In any violent conflict, military action may create the conditions for security, some economic development, and the beginnings of normalcy. But building a lasting peace requires skill sets, relationships, and knowledge not routinely resident in a military formation. In the right environment, the civilian-military partnership between USIP and 2-10 Mountain was, and is, a model for sustained security and enduring normalcy.
So what does all this have to do with remembering the ultimate sacrifice of American soldiers on Memorial Day? While nothing can ever fully heal the pain of families who lost loved ones in any conflict, commemorating those sacrifices with our living commitment to peace, may prevent other families from having to experience that loss. That is an alternative worth pursuing. As we remember our fallen this Memorial Day, I encourage all associated with the U.S. Institute of Peace to remain dedicated to your tenet that a world without violent conflict is possible, practical, and essential for U.S. and global security.

10 Years After ISIS’s Genocide, Iraq Is Still Dealing with the Human Legacies
Monday, July 8, 2024
By: Sarhang Hamasaeed ; Osama Gharizi
This year marks the 10-year anniversary of ISIS’ capture of a third of Iraqi and Syrian territory and genocide against the Ezidis (Yazidis) and other communities. Supported by the U.S.-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, Iraq declared military victory over the terrorist group in December 2017 and has significantly reduced and controlled the threat ever since. Significant progress has also been made in the recovery and stabilization process, with the successful return to their areas of origin of some five million of the six million Iraqis internally displaced by the conflict and the rebuilding of many of the regions that the conflict devastated.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani met last week with U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House as part of a weeklong visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations. The visit occurred amid several historic anniversaries and dangerous developments in the Middle East. April marks the 21st anniversary of the toppling of Saddam Hussein. Since 2003, the U.S.-Iraq relationship has witnessed many ups and downs. Even as tensions persist, particularly in relation to the U.S. troop presence in the country, al-Sudani’s visit — which featured the largest delegation Iraqis have brought to Washington — demonstrates Iraqi will to start a new chapter in the strategic partnership that goes beyond security.

BREAKING: Stephen Miller expected to be named Trump's deputy chief of staff for policy
Essay: On Memorial Day, Honor the Military Sacrifices of All Who've Served
Memorial Day is more than a holiday that kicks off summer and leads to a three-day weekend. For me and thousands of others, it has personal significance and meaning.
In 2005, my squadron mate and friend gave his life during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The tragic news quickly spread amongst our group of buddies who shared the unique bond that comes from wearing the uniform together in training and in combat. Those of us who were not deployed made our way to Arlington National Cemetery to say our goodbyes. It was a somber day in Washington D.C. as I watched my friend be buried with military honors, the formality and traditions of ceremony carried out with precision.
His ceremony was one of many that day, all completed with respect, honor, and dignity. I saw three other processions along with his, each with families and friends in mourning. And for each, servicemen and women ensured a proper tribute.
It is a day I’ll always remember and think of each Memorial Day. This is how our country must honor our fallen warriors.
Since that day, I’ve visited Arlington many times. Walking through the cemetery always feels like an exercise in unexpected pauses, allowing you to absorb the magnitude of the stories within the seemingly endless fields. Moving through the fields of white headstones is like a journey through decades of stories that are ever present.
The white headstones are simple: each include the name, branch of service, date of birth and death, and perhaps a detail about rank or awards. But each is a journey in time; each is a narrative; each is a story of sacrifice. Everyone is unique but they have so much in common because of their dedication to their country.
As I stop and think about my experiences at Arlington, I find that the one thing I’ve never done is imagine what the servicemen and women laid to rest there looked like. Having viewed hundreds of headstones, I can say that I have never tried to picture the person; I’ve only pictured a uniform. I see a Sailor, Soldier, Airman/woman, Coast Guardsman/woman, or Marine — perhaps with the minor uniform changes that represent the era in which they fought.
I’ve wondered why. Perhaps not imagining a face of an individual is a product of the military culture, one that simply relied on trusting the members of your team, regardless of where they came for or what they looked like. And perhaps seeing the green, blue, white, tan, or khaki uniform is all I really needed to know because people of all races, creeds, color, and religions have fought for our country.
In the politically charged climate of 2017, Memorial Day is a way to remember that we need to honor the men and women of our armed forces and that they are comprised of diverse backgrounds from across our country and the world. Each and every one of them took the same oath to defend our Constitution, and made a commitment to be a part of our nation’s military.
Our military services are truly a societal and global melting pot. According to the Pew Research Center , minority groups made up 40 percent of the active duty military in 2015, up from 25 percent in 1990.
Military service also provides a means for immigrants to serve the country. According to the official website of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security , through fiscal year '15, the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) that authorizes U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to expedite the application and naturalization process for current members of the U.S. armed forces and recently discharged service members has naturalized 109,321 members of the military from 34 foreign countries.
This is an incredible testimony to our freedoms. Imagine believing so strongly in the constitutional principles and fundamental beliefs of a nation that you would give your life to be a part of it.
As an Asian American, I am especially thankful at the opportunity provided for my family. I am thankful that my parents were able to find a meaningful and rewarding life for themselves and my siblings. I’m thankful that I could don a U.S. Navy uniform and serve. I’m thankful for the Asian Americans that went well before me and demonstrated their commitment to our country.
I am thankful for units like the 442nd Regimental Combat Team , the most highly-decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of American warfare that proved ethnicity was not a requirement for service. The 442nd's 14,000 American men of Japanese ancestry fought in Europe during World War II, earning 9,486 Purple Hearts and were awarded 21 Medals of Honor . While many of them may have been viewed as the enemy, history has correctly recognized their bravery, sacrifice, and belief in our nation.
So as we reflect on the significance of Memorial Day, as we participate in the “National Moment of Remembrance” by pausing for one minute of silence at 3 p.m. local, as we fly our flags at half mast on until noon, and as we remember those that have paid the price in defense of our nation, we should also take a moment to remember that there are many more that will come from all over our country and around the world as they always have, ready to protect our freedoms.

Military families share the sacrifice of service
On Thanksgiving, military families and other Americans think about U.S. service members who are deployed or stationed far from home who are sharing their meal with others — maybe in a mess hall, in a ship’s mess, or even less friendly environments. But with the month of November’s designation as Military Family Appreciation Month , let’s not forget about those families who are missing those service members.
As they gather around their tables, their loved one’s absence is felt and often accompanied by worry for their safety and questions about whether they are feeling lonely, scared or just homesick. And let’s also think about those families who may have their service member at home but are also providing vital emotional support.
As a military spouse and as the wife of a Medal of Honor recipient , I have gained a great appreciation for the many ways that families help to support service members and the sacrifices they make. It’s not just keeping the home fires burning, long deployments, frequent moves, early mornings and last-minute schedule changes that can make it hard to feel in control of your life. It’s also being there to provide mental and emotional support, and to sense when that support is needed even when your loved one is silent.
I have had the opportunity to see the service of my husband, Sgt. Maj. Matt Williams , highlighted and applauded in ceremonies and forums around the country. It is humbling to see the respect and reverence Americans have for not only the Medal of Honor, but for our military members. But like his fellow Medal of Honor recipients and their families, I have come to understand that there is a deep sense of obligation that comes from receiving this special award — a feeling that it represents the service of those who have come before him and those who will come after him, particularly those who make the ultimate sacrifice.
President Trump awards Medal of Honor to Master Sgt. Matthew Williams
“matt’s heroism ensured that not a single american died in the battle of shok valley,” president trump said..
My husband was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Afghanistan leading an assault element up and down an icy mountain and through an icy river to get to a besieged element housing a high value target. He provided suppressive fire to keep insurgent fighters from overrunning the position, then helped to move American casualties down the mountain and returned to lead Afghan commandos in a counterattack. He continued to help evacuate the wounded, all while exposing himself to enemy fire.
We are blessed that his Medal of Honor “action” had a happy ending, with his entire team coming home. Most recipients can’t say the same, nor can many of the thousands of service members who fought in the 20-year conflict , many of whom brought home significant physical or mental injuries and lost friends. To hear him speak about his time overseas, to know the things he has seen, and then be congratulated for it is heavy stuff. And I know that being by his side to absorb some of that heaviness is just one of many ways that I play a role in supporting his service.
Afghanistan war cost more than $2T and 240,000 lives, report finds
The figures include half-a-trillion dollars on interest..
You don’t have to be married to a Medal of Honor recipient to experience this. Under the smiles, behind those hand-painted signs welcoming home men and women home from deployments, and standing next to them when a patriotic American thanks them for their service, there can be some very difficult memories, strained families, and fallen friends. This emotional burden is something that many military families all over the world contend with daily, but while we rightfully try to ensure that there are plentiful services to support the mental health of active duty military and veterans, we often don’t think about the impact or strain on entire families.
Military Family Appreciation Month is a time to reflect on the lives that many families dedicate in service to our country. Can military life also be rewarding? OF COURSE! We are the proudest people you will find, and we will support each other fiercely.
This Military Family Appreciation Month let’s consider some of the less tangible ways that military families support our service members and, thus, our country’s defense. And let’s continue to remember family members and the role they play when we think about our military and veterans — the lows, the highs and how we build our lives around service to our country.
