Docudrama Movie 'Supervolcano' by BBC and Discovery Channel
Bbc science and discovery channel produced the docudrama called “super-volcano,” followed by the documentary, “supervolcano: the truth about yellowstone.”.
Movie teaser: “A true story of global disaster… it just hasn’t happened yet”
In the Spring of 2006, a BBC Science and Discovery Channel docudrama called “Supervolcano” was followed by the documentary, “Supervolcano: The Truth About Yellowstone.” For all of its doomsday atmosphere, “SuperVolcano” may just be the best thing that’s happened to Yellowstone – free publicity and lots of it. “We’re getting great public interest in the geology and geothermal features of the park,” said Hank Hesler, park geologist. “Public reaction has been very positive, because people want to learn more.”
Watch “Supervolcano” on YouTube , Netflix , or DVD
All of Yellowstone’s geysers, hot springs, mud pots and other geothermal features are directly related to a vast magma chamber, deep under the park. The heat from that magma chamber drives all of Yellowstone’s geothermal features, Hesler said. Periodically, about every 600,000 years or so, said Hesler, all that energy in the magma chamber breaks loose in a “supervolcano.” Past eruptions were 2.1 million years ago, 1.2 million years ago and 640,000 years ago. The three eruptions, respectively, were about 6,000, 700 and 2,500 times larger than the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Washington State.
The program aired in March in 2006 in the British Isles and in April in the United States.
“This is a dynamic environment,” said Hesler, “and it is changing all the time. As often as I look at our geothermal features, I’m always seeing something new.” That was proved once again in late May, when the Steamboat Geyser – Yellowstone’s tallest and most unpredictable geyser – erupted for the first time since 2003. According to park records, the geyser has erupted more times in the past five years than it has since the 1980s. There’s nothing static about Yellowstone’s geothermal features, Hesler said. As a result, the concept of “normal” activity is broad, rather than narrow, he said.
Shortly after the showing of “SuperVolcano,” the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) released the first-ever comprehensive and systematic review of the 169 U.S. volcanoes. USGS also established a framework for a National Volcano Early Warning System (NVEWS) which calls for a 24/7 Volcano Watch Office, plus enhanced instrumentation and monitoring at targeted volcanoes – including Yellowstone.
USGS identified 37 volcanoes in the Very High threat group and mentions an additional 21 under-monitored volcanoes. Yellowstone is one of the 21 under-monitored volcanoes in the High threat group. USGS officials emphasized that this does not mean that the geologic conditions at Yellowstone have changed. The activity at Yellowstone remains consistent with historic levels.
“We’re getting six more GPS, real-time monitoring stations,” said Hesler. That will double the number of year-round monitoring stations in the park. That’s supplemented every two years when USGS brings in a bunch of portable monitors for a few days. In addition, said Hesler, a satellite with radar imaging technology is scheduled once a year to scan the park to see whether it can detect up-or-down surface deformations – an indicator that something is happening.
About the show
“The show tries to envision what would happen if we had another super-eruption like we had 2.1 million years ago,” said Jake Lowenstern, director of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (volcanoes.usgs.gov/ yvo/). The producers, writers and scientists behind the show talked to Lowenstern and many other scientists who study Yellow-stone’s geological features. “I have to say that in all the important respects, they got the details right,” Lowenstern said.
According to the scientific speculation in the docudrama, a super-eruption would: · Block highways with cars as millions flee the unfolding disaster. · Kill hundreds of thousands as the ash swamps towns and cities. · Knock out modern communications. · Form sulphuric acid droplets in the atmosphere, blocking out sunlight, and causing global temperatures to plummet and devastate crops.
That said, Lowenstern emphasized that a super-eruption beneath Yellowstone “is not likely to occur any time soon, or maybe ever.” He readily acknowledged that all prior supervolcano eruptions around the world took place well beyond historical experience, so geologists have had zero experience studying how a supervolcano gears up for a super-eruption. “We are getting pretty good at forecasting eruptions when volcanoes are restless,” he said. “So far, there is no sign of that with Yellowstone.”
There are several extinct supervolcano sites around the world, Lowenstern said – the nearest is in the San Juan mountains of Colorado, where a super-eruption blew 20 million years ago, near the mining town of Creede. That supervolcano site hasn’t made a peep since then, he said. “My recommendation,” said Lowenstern, “is to relax and take this program as an educational opportunity.”
That’s how Yellowstone National Park is treating it. Linda Young, one of the three top directors of the park’s Division of Interpretation, is working on display exhibits about Yellowstone’s volcanic past, which will appear in the Canyon Visitor Education Center next year. The park is also working to replace an antiquated visitor center near Old Faithful, with a new and much bigger visitor center focused on the park’s hydro-thermal features. The new center is scheduled to open in 2008.
“Last September, after most of our visitors were gone, we installed a number of interpretive displays along the Mud Volcano Trail,” said Young. Located five miles north of Fishing Bridge Junction, Mud Volcano Trail is one of the park’s most exotic, dynamic and even odd geothermal features, said Young.
“We have a geyser that erupts out of a cave, and a hot spring pool that is inky black and highly acidic,” said Young.
All in all, said Young and Hesler, public reaction to the supervolcano publicity has not been panicky or ‘doom and gloom.’ “Actually, there’s been little public feedback, compared to bison and grizzly management issues,” said Young.
Normal volcanoes are formed by a column of magma (molten rock) rising from deep within the Earth, erupting on the surface, and hardening in layers down the sides to form cone-shaped mountains. There are thousands of these normal volcanoes throughout the world. Around 50 erupt every year, but supervolcanoes are very different.
The term “supervolcano” implies an eruption of magnitude 8 on the Volcano Explosivity Index, indicating an eruption of more than 1,000 cubic kilometers (250 cubic miles) of magma.

Product Description
Amidst the stunning wilderness of Yellowstone National Park, steam and hot water bubble and hiss from thousands of colorful, mineral-encrusted springs and vents. These hot springs, geysers and bubbling mud pools are all outward manifestations of a huge body of magma residing not far beneath the surface. It's a subterranean sea of molten lava that scientists are sure will burst through the Earth's crust – it's just a question of when. And if the resulting super-volcanic eruption is anything like the last one on earth – which plunged the world into darkness for six years, tipped us into the last Ice Age and reduced the human population to just 2,000 people – we're in for one explosive ride. Based on the predictions of top volcano experts and the detailed planning and evacuation strategies of government agencies, this sobering, factual drama shapes possible events into a compelling human experience. Watch as state-of-the-art computer graphics integrated with mock-factual sources reveal the horrifyingly realistic build-up to the Yellowstone eruption and the climax itself. Learn what effects the eruption may have across the globe – environmentally, politically, economically and socially – as the massive ash cloud drifts into the upper atmosphere. And glimpse the fragmented world that such a cataclysmic geological event would surely leave behind.

A “ super volcano” is going to erupt all over Hawaii, but Molly ( activist) will not stop fighting with Griffin the volcano expert. So annoying! The staff of volcano experts are all pretty annoying! I. Cheered for the volcano! Pass for sure! Acting is awful. Ugh!

This was exactly what I expected, a clichéd diaster film, bad dialogue, lots of family drama, terrible CGI and the ending you no is coming. But of course it was so much fun to laugh at as all Asylum films are, the family all have skills that are needed to stop the mega eruptions and the parents are separated (of course). They use CGI for everything like the volcanoe eruptions, lava, cars, helicopters (in every film) the cars driving away from the danger scene with the mum and daughter are like a 1990's computer game, in one scene 2 people are trapped in the lava flow and sit crying while the tyres are popping and it's sinking down but the vehicle isn't any hotter? They even climb out OK and jump onto a log in the lava ok and walk off??? WTF!!! It's just great fun.
Review by Tolkien About Films ★★★ 4
For anyone who is a fan of Asylum Films then this film is a great way to start a franchise of natural disaster films for the new R.E.A.C.T team. Good set peices and story. The dialogue is a bit hit and miss and the writing for the protagonist's children could have done with improvement.
The film leans into human made climate change and the almost inevitable natural disasters that result from it. The big CEO business man who has caused the world to change tries to make amends to their mistakes. A lesson i hope the real CEO's of the world learn from.
P.S. I was the first person to rate this film on here. How cool!

Oh Asylum, it’s cute that you’re trying to have a storyline, but you do those worse than you do CGI, I think I’d rather see the volcano action. Yawn

Ok film that was the first of an Asylum trilogy. This 1 sets up the new REACT team as they deal with a series of volcanic eruptions, but to be honest, I've seen the other two & it's all downhill from here!

Rating 5.5/10 Age: 13+
Before my comments, it appears that the director likes the Avatar cartoon series. This is about fire, the next about earth, and the one after that water. The fourth will be wind? B-Movies are my thing and Asylum is the master, of them. It's been a while, since I watched one, but this one was decent. I watched it because I watched 20.0 Megaquake, without knowing it was the second in a series. The story is copy paste Asylum. Volcano bad. Stop volcano. The acting was fine for being an Asylum movie, although the two kids were bothersome. The daughter is a jump first, ask later type and isn't phased at all by almost being melted…

I expected to see a mountainous volcano in "Volcano,'' towering high over Los Angeles. But the movie takes place at ground level; It's about how lava boils out of the La Brea Tar Pits, threatens a stretch of Wilshire Boulevard, and then takes a shortcut through the city sewer system. The ads say "The Coast Is Toast,'' but maybe they should say "The Volcano Is Drano.'' This is a surprisingly cheesy disaster epic. It's said that "Volcano'' cost a lot more than "Dante's Peak,'' a competing volcano movie released two months ago, but it doesn't look it. "Dante's Peak'' had better special effects, a more entertaining story, and a real mountain. "Volcano'' is an absolutely standard, assembly-line undertaking; no wonder one of the extras is reading a paperback titled "Screenwriting Made Easy.'' The movie stars Tommy Lee Jones , professional as always even in this flimsy story, as the chief of the city's Office of Emergency Management. He races through the obligatory opening scenes of all disaster movies (everyday life, ominous warnings, alarm sounded by hero scientist, warnings poo-pooed by official muckety-mucks, etc.). Soon manhole covers are being blown sky-high, subway trains are being engulfed by fireballs, and "lava bombs'' are flying through the air and setting miniature sets on fire.
Jones is at ground zero when the La Brea Tar Pits erupt and lava flows down the street, melting fire trucks. Like all disaster movie heroes, he's supplied with five obligatory companions: 1. His daughter ( Gaby Hoffmann ), who comes along for the ride, gets trapped by a lava flow, is rescued, is taken to a hospital, and has to be rescued from the path of a falling skyscraper that her dad has blown up to redirect the lava flow.
2. The blond female scientist ( Anne Heche ), who warns that the first eruption is not the last, predicts where the lava will flow next, and at a crucial point explains to Jones that it will flow downhill, not uphill. He tells her at a critical moment: "Find my daughter!'' She should have replied, "Hey, I'm the one who told you what the lava was going to do! Find her yourself! I'm needed here.'' 3. The African-American sidekick ( Don Cheadle ), whose function is to stand in the middle of the Office of Emergency Management and shout at Jones through a telephone. I don't know what he *did* at the office, but nobody else did anything, either. One wall was covered by a giant screen showing hysterical anchors on the local TV news. Rows of grim technicians faced this wall, seated at computer terminals that showed the very same TV news broadcast. (All of the anchors are so thrilled to be covering a big story that they can scarcely conceal the elation in their voices.) 4. The Asian-American female doctor (Jacqui Kim), who arrives at the scene, gives first aid to firemen and hero's daughter, and organizes the evacuation of Cedars-Sinai Hospital as the lava flows toward it. (She doubles as the wife of the man who builds the high-rise tower that Jones blows up.) 5. The dog: In a tiny subplot, we see a dog barking at the lava coming in the front door, and then grabbing his Doggy-Bone and escaping out the back. When that happened, not a single dog in the audience had dry eyes.
Jones is a fine actor, and he does what he can. Striding into the OEM control center, he walks briskly up to a hapless technician and taps on his computer keyboard, barking: "See that, that and that? Now watch this!'' He sounds as if he means business, but do you suppose someone actually was paid for writing that line? Various subplots are rushed on and off screen at blinding speed. At one point a troublesome black man is handcuffed by police, who later release him as the lava flow approaches. He's free to go, but lingers and says, "You block this street, you save the neighborhood--right?'' The cops nod. Then he pitches in and helps them lift a giant concrete barrier. The scene is over in a second, but think how insulting it is: It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out they're trying to save the neighborhood, so the dialogue is for our benefit, implying that the black dude cares merely for "the neighborhood,'' and volunteers only when his myopic concerns have been addressed.
The lava keeps flowing for much of the movie, never looking convincing. I loved it when the firemen aimed their hoses way offscreen into the middle of the lava flow, instead of maybe aiming them at the leading edge of the lava--which they couldn't do, because the lava was a visual effect, and not really there.
I also chortled at the way the scientist warns that the first eruption "is not the last,'' and yet after the second eruption (when it is time for the movie to end), the sun comes out, everyone smiles, and she offers Jones and his daughter a lift home. Hey, what about the possibility of a third eruption? What about that story she told about the Mexican farmer who found a mountain in his cornfield? The movie has one perfect line: "This city is finally paying for its arrogance!'' Yes, and "Volcano'' is part of the price.
