I’m soooooo glad I stumbled upon this article! YouTube can be a never-ending rabbit hole of silly pet videos, guitar covers, world news, and pretty much anything else you can think of. Fortunately, the popular Google property lets you download a number of these uploads for offline viewing.

There’s a catch though: You’ll need to be a YouTube Premium subscriber , which costs $14 per month for PC web browsers and the Android version of the YouTube app. If you own an iPhone or iPad, the cost goes up to $19 per month, because YouTube bundles in Apple’s in-app transaction fee.  

You can store downloads on up to 10 devices. If you add a new device to your plan, the oldest of your 10 existing devices will be removed. You can perform this swap-out up to four times per year. To begin a download, simply find the movie, show, or user upload you want to watch, then click or tap the Download icon. To view dowloaded content, tap your YouTube profile icon, and select a title from the Downloads dashboard.

You’ll also be able to download movies and shows you’ve purchased or rented from YouTube for offline viewing — without needing a YouTube Premium account. Unfortunately, offline viewing doesn’t extend to YouTube’s free movie collection.

Library of Congress

A bastion of cultural significance, the Library of Congress (LOC), in partnership with the National Film Registry , curates a yearly section of movies that “showcase the range and diversity of American film heritage.” For 2024, the collection only features 18 films, but you couldn’t ask for an easier interface to use.

After selecting one of the films, you’ll be brought to a video player page. Use the playback controls by hovering over the film thumbnail. Credits, release dates, and format info can be found by scrolling down past the player. You’ll also see a small Download dropdown. Click or tap this option to choose between an MP4 or MOV for your export file. Click Go , and the film will open in a new tab.

To save the movie to your computer, right-click, then click Download Video or Download Video As… to choose an export location on your PC. We were able to use the Download dropdown on an iPhone too, but once the film opens in a new tab, there isn’t a way to actually save it to your mobile device.

We explicitly advise against downloading copyrighted material to a PC or mobile device. So if you’d like to venture away from the big streaming titans like Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube, your best bet for legal free downloads are public domain films. We tested playback out by enabling Airplane Mode, and we were able to play, pause, rewind, and fast-forward our chosen film.  

Perhaps the only drawback with PDM is its curation is limited to older films only. But if you’re a Hollywood Golden Age fan, or discerning arthouse viewer, you’ll be quite pleased with the selections.  

Internet Archive

Similar to PublicDomainMovie.net, the Internet Archive site is just what it sounds like: a handsome collection of royalty-free films that you can sort by genre, era, subject, and many other filters. The Internet Archive actually provides public domain films to sites like PublicDomainMovie and similar free-to-download pages.  

  There are thousands of selections on the Internet Archive, and every film gets its own title page, complete with synopsis, cast and crew credits, and a handy Downloads sub-menu with several file types to choose from. The download process is identical to the PublicDomainMovie site. Choose the file extension you’d like to export with. Once the player opens in a new window, right-click and choose Download Video or Download Video As…  

Far more than just a movie trove, you can also download books, music, games, images, and software.  

Here’s a unique option for all our indie film lovers, foreign cinema devotees, and arthouse fans. For $11 per month (or $96 annually), a Mubi subscription gives you access to a library of over 800 films. Many of these titles can be downloaded for offline viewing, but you’ll need to be using the Mubi mobile app to do so.  

To download a film, simply select the title and tap the Download icon from the Details page (located under the video player). Movies you’ve downloaded will be housed in the Your Offline Films dashboard. Mubi even lets you choose the download quality of these offline films.

There are thousands of movies on Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu) that you can watch right now. All you have to do is put up with a few commercials.

It's a great movie site whether you do or don't know what you want to watch. Films can be filtered by genre, and you can browse by most-watched or release date. All the basic genres are available: action, comedy, crime, romance, and a few others.

While it's true that the genres aren't interesting, Fandango at Home makes up for it with their curated lists. Check these out: Big Time Movie Stars , Critically Acclaimed , Hidden Gems , and Most Watched Movies . There are a few hundred videos in each section.

Something unique about this site is that it not only lets you look through the newest releases, but you can do so on a single page for every genre. Another great thing about Fandango at Home's movies is that some of them are in 1080p, so you don't have to sacrifice quality just to watch some free movies.

Once you settle on something to watch, you might be given the option to buy or rent it, but so long as you find it through one of the free pages, there will be a button you can use to stream the movie without paying. You can even watch movies still in theaters .

There's always a video playing; you can mute, but not stop it.

Pluto TV is the closest thing I've found to free cable TV. It's owned by Paramount and fully supported by ads, so there's no worry that you might accidentally buy something.

My biggest joy about using this service is that I can just turn it on and let it play. There are hundreds of live channels, so some of them feature news, reality TV, or game shows, but others have full-length movies.

Not everything is live, though, which is good. If I'm in the mood for something specific, I can look through thousands of movies and TV shows that are available on demand.

The unique categories for their on-demand films are a huge plus because most movie sites just stick to the traditional few genres. Hollywood Icons, The King of Horror, 00s Replay, and Cult Films are a few examples.

These are some of the most-watched movies on Pluto TV this last month: Good Burger, Eurotrip, School of Rock, and The Defender.

In my experience, running Pluto TV through a TV makes it easier to use because the always-on video player gets in the way on smaller screens. But, there is a mobile app and a desktop player if you'd rather go that route.

Popcornflix is another great place to watch free movies online. Their constant flow of new titles from Screen Media Ventures means they have lots of movies being added all the time.

Right off the bat, I appreciate that I don't need an account to use it. I also like that resume playback is supported so I can pause and watch the rest of the movie later.

However, there are a few things I don't like. While the website is definitely very modern-looking, it's not super user-friendly. Along that same line, I would love to have sorting options within each genre list because it's way more fun to see which documentaries, for example, were added recently so I'm not scrolling over all the same movies I always see.

There are several hundred movies here that include comedy, drama, horror, action, romance, family, documentary movies, and foreign films. They also feature web and film school originals and list some titles by a common theme; I've seen Disaster Movie Madness, Edgy Comedies, Behind Bars, Space Invaders, Pulse-Pounding Thrills , and Fear Factory .

Makes it easy to find free movies around the web.

Sort by popularity and date added.

Can be helpful for renting and buying, too.

Films are streamed through other sites.

Incorrectly labels some paid movies as free.

Shows the wrong synopsis and photo for some films.

I'm so happy I stumbled on Yidio years ago! It's like a search engine for all these other movie sites. It's incredibly handy because it shows where on the internet a movie is available for free.

A search box would be enough, but Yidio goes above and beyond with lots of other sorting and filtering options. These include MPAA rating, decade, genre, IMDb score, and others. Just fill out any of that information to get a list you can comb through, with links to free movie sites.

For example, I asked Yidio to find me free animation movies released since 2020 and to sort the list by IMDb rating. The top several results provided links to watch those films on Tubi, Roku, Pluto TV, and other free streaming sites.

This isn't a perfect service, but it works great nearly every time I use it.

Plex is an interesting service because it's actually a much bigger package than it might seem at first. In addition to its massive collection of free full-length movies and TV shows, Plex also has live TV and associated software that serves as a really cool at-home media server .

Currently, there are tens of thousands of free movies and shows here. They're sectioned off in traditional genres like action and crime, but you can also browse by actor or channel. Plex has its own unique collections, too; I've seen Feel Good Films , Based On a True Story, Til Death Do Us Part, Oh-My-Godzilla, Cheap Thrills, and Midnight Movies .

On a movie's watch page are similar titles and additional details that help build a total picture of the film, like the full cast list, reviews, and trailers. I love this because it makes it easy to find other movies on Plex with the same stars.

See which movies on Plex are leaving soon to catch them before they go! Plex's Most Popular page lists Cruel Intentions, Movie 43, A Haunted House, Snowpiercer , and others.

If you can't find what you want on Plex, the title you're interested in might still show up in the results, and you'll be given links to places you can buy/rent it (sort of like Yidio, listed above).

Filmzie is built for streaming movies from independent filmmakers and both small and large studios. The site and app are well-designed, and there are plenty of great titles to stream.

Here are some collections I've seen that are rare to find on a movie site: Directed by Women, Asia's Top Cinema, Cuddle-Up Comedies , and Independent Cinema . Of course, over 20 traditional genres, like drama and thriller, are also available. Trending, new, and most-watched movies each have their own section as well.

Filmzie does a great job organizing its movies. This is the main reason I use it. That, and there are so many videos here that I have never even heard of, so it's the perfect place to find something brand new.

Some of this site's most-watched movies are Frankenstein Created Bikers , The Maid, The Babysitters , and Raven. Some trending titles over this last month include The Frame and Lady Chatterley's Lover.

I've used the website and the mobile app, and both work more or less the same as these other movie sites.

Really great mobile app.

Can't sort films by popularity.

Available only in the US and its territories.

Crackle is a no-brainer for this list. I always come back to it to watch free movies online because of its list of hundreds of full-length films and original programming. These are big-name movies with stars I'm sure you know.

Although you have to sit through commercials, I find them to be relatively short, with only a few breaks during a movie.

Another reason I choose Crackle is because of its unique categories like Foreign Language, Stand-Up, British, Variety/Talk/Games, and Unidentified/Unexplained . It's fun to look through interesting genres like this.

A closed captioning toggle is available directly from the video player for all users but, if you sign up for an account (it's free), you can also enable parental controls (options are kids mode, teen mode, and grown-up mode).

Here are some examples of the most popular movies on Crackle: Blitz, Bordertown, The Land That Time Forgot, and Night Catches Us.

The Roku Channel

Works on computers, mobile devices, and TVs.

No user account needed.

Can't filter or sort any genre list.

Doesn't separate movies from shows in category lists.

Lists paid videos next to free ones.

You might already know about Roku's free movies if you have a Roku TV or streaming device . But even if you don't, you can still watch all the same free movies, TV shows, and live TV from a computer, phone, or tablet.

There are some ads in these movies, but the trade-off is high-quality videos and well-known movies.

On the home page are handy categories I have yet to find on another free movie site. They often change, but some that I've seen include Fools in Love, UFO Phenomenon, Teen Dramas, Reality Romance, Undercover Agents, Environment, and Mexican Action.

While there are also typical genre lists you can browse through, none of them let you sort by popularity or filter by rating or year. This is by far my biggest issue with the service. That, and both TV shows and movies are mixed into the same lists, and said lists must be browsed horizontally in a carousel-like menu. It's just not super user-friendly.

However, I do like that you can search for actors and directors to find movies they're associated with. I also appreciate the Continue watching section.

Redbox is known for its DVD rental kiosks, but they also have free movie streams available through their website and mobile app. No matter where you use it, the user interface is quite bland, and you can't sort any of the lists. Still, I'll end up here from time to time if I can't find something good through these other services.

Like most movie sites, Redbox's collection can be browsed by genre to help you find dramas, kid movies, romance films, comedies, etc. Faith-Based is one category I haven't seen elsewhere.

Redbox also makes it super simple to see which movies are the most popular and which ones will be leaving the site soon. Some of the latest movies added to their streaming collection include Filth, Support the Girls, Take the Waltz, Hammer of the Gods, The Eyes Of My Mother , and White Bird In a Blizzard.

Must have a supported library card or school account.

The Kanopy movie streaming site is different from these other choices because you need a valid library card or university login before you can watch anything. However, there are zero commercials in the movies, and new films are added every month.

Use the Kanopy signup page to search for your library, whether it's a public library or one attached to a school. You can start watching movies after you've been approved.

Kanopy does a great job providing useful categories to look through. There's Short Film, History - Ancient, LGBTQ Cinema, War & Action, Sociology, Performing Arts, Human Rights, Everyday Health, and K-12 Lessons .

A few of the more popular movies here include Memento, The Girl on the Train, and Maurice.

There's also an entirely separate section for Kanopy kids movies . My son's old enough now to watch non-kid movies, but if he weren't, I'd be thrilled with this. There are subsections like Story Time and Read-Along Storybooks . You can also set up parental controls to force only age-appropriate content.

On the first day of each month, Netflix Netflix never fails—we are guaranteed a wealth of cinematic material that’ll keep us wondering what to watch next for hours. This has certainly been the case over the first few days of May, as the streaming service has gifted us with all sorts of great options. From dark indie dramas about addiction and familiar love to sci-fi reboots that reignite storied romances to a surprise documentary from A24 about conservation, there’s sure to be an option for any kind of movie lover. So...where do you start?

Hopefully I can help. Below, you’ll find my picks for the ten best new movies added to Netflix so far in May 2024. Past that, you’ll find a comprehensive list of every single new film available to subscribers. I’m guessing that you’ll find your next movie night flick in this bunch.

The Matrix: Resurrections (2021)

It’s the reboot we never thought would happen. Twenty-two years after the original film’s groundbreaking introduction , The Matrix: Resurrections picks up right where the story left off, thrusting viewers back into the perplexing virtual reality that captivated a generation. In this latest iteration, Keanu Reeves reprises his role as Neo, now living under the guise of an ordinary software developer, haunted by fractured memories of his past life. Lana Wachowski helms this ambitious sequel (this time without sister Lilly), spinning a tale of illusion and reality as Neo's dormant world begins to crack. Of course Carrie-Anne Moss returns as Trinity, with she and Neo’s chemistry reigniting forgotten passions and pivotal revolutions. In the 2019 reboot of Hellboy , director Neil Marshall, who gave us horror flicks like The Descent and Dog Soldiers, goes a decidedly different direction tonally, yet delivers a successful, modernized version of the wry superhero’s universe. This time, David Harbour dons the iconic red skin and horns, emerging as a conflicted hero wrestling with his demonic destiny while battling ancient forces bent on Earth's destruction. Under Marshall's direction, the film strides into darker territories, blending visceral combat with gothic horror. With Milla Jovovich as his nemesis and Ian McShane as his guide, the narrative arcs into the tumultuous life of Hellboy, exploring his struggle between preordained destruction and the fierce desire to forge his own path.

My Mercury (2024)

The original Mortal Kombat from Paul W.S. Anderson has always been a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. But for anybody who desired a much more polished blockbuster, the 2021 reboot may have been a welcome surprise. Under Simon McQuoid's direction, the new Mortal Kombat resurrects the legendary tournament by introducing Cole Young, portrayed by Lewis Tan, a fighter marked by destiny yet ignorant of his powerful lineage. As he's thrust into a brutal battle that spans realms, the film unleashes a flurry of martial arts mastery and fantastical fatalities that the franchise is known for. Iconic warriors like Sub-Zero and Scorpion return, executing their signature moves in a high-stakes war between Earth and the Outerworld. Starring super watchable all-stars like Tan, Jessica McNamee, and Josh Lawson, this reboot delivers a visceral journey into the heart of combat, where every fight is a dance with death.

Unfrosted (2024)

Jerry Seinfeld has accomplished a great deal during his career. But prior to this moment, he had never directed a movie. But Netflix changed all that with Unfrosted , which catapults us back to the swinging '60s where we delve into the madcap origin story of the Pop-Tart. In Battle Creek, Michigan, a frantic race between Kellogg's and Post unfolds—and not for space exploration, but for breakfast supremacy. From the looks of the trailer, Seinfeld injects his trademark humor into this film in which he also stars, celebrating the absurdity of corporate America's quest to invent a new breakfast classic. The cast, including Jim Gaffigan in a humorously tight suit, along with Melissa McCarthy, Hugh Grant, and Amy Schumer, this comedy aims to deliver a delightful romp that embodies the quirky spirit of the era.

The Best Man Holiday (2013)

Every year, we like to highlight the best Christmas movies, as well as the most underrated ones—and The Best Man Holiday always makes its way onto my personal list. This sequel reunites viewers with the cherished circle of friends from the original film after nearly 15 years, discovering how time and circumstance have shaped their lives. Directed by Malcolm D. Lee, the ensemble cast led by Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, and Nia Long reconvenes over a festive Christmas gathering, where old rivalries and romances reignite amid the joy and camaraderie of the holiday season. Any way you shake it, I would argue how-did-this-get-made movies like Shadow in the Cloud , which look and feel like nothing else, deserve our attention. Directed by Roseanne Liang, this ridiculous movie pairs high-altitude thrills with supernatural chills, starring Chloë Grace Moretz as a fearless WWII pilot named Maude on a classified mission. Isolated in the belly of a bomber, she not only faces off against an aerial onslaught but also a sinister presence lurking within the aircraft. The film uses its claustrophobic setting to create a pressure-cooker scenario that forces our protagonist to maneuver through this double threat in delightfully entertaining fashion.

Rather (2023)

Dan Rather is the focus of the 2023 documentary 'Rather.'

Not many people expected Frank Marshall, the director of film like Arachnophbia, Congo, and Eight Below , to become a compelling documentary director. But that’s been the case ever since 2020, as Marshall has delivered several musical explorations, like Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story and The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart . Marshall takes a decidedly different direction with Rather, a reverent documentary that chronicles the storied career of Dan Rather, an emblematic figure in American journalism. Through interviews and historical footage, Marshall paints a portrait of a man whose reporting from global hotspots like Vietnam and the Berlin Wall has defined moments of historical heft.
