The era of User Generated Content (USG) on Social Networks has invested different areas of human experience, including one of the highest levels of education, i.e., the PhD grade. As regards the opportunity to “imitate” a virtual content, the phenomenon of Memes (Shifman, J Vis Cult 13(3):340–358, 56 ) is spreading. The present research aims at the understanding how the online functions and practices of humor signification are featured considering linguistic and visual aspects. In particular it has a twofold goals: a) analyzing which differences emerged in terms of functions and emotions between humor in PhD Memes on Facebook and Instagram by means of ‘diatextual’ analysis; b) performing a fine-grained qualitative analysis about rethorical aspects based on linguistic and visual elements of Phd Memes in order to contribute to the field of humor automatic detection. To satisfy these purposes, 70 memes about the PhD on Facebook and Instagram were collected and, then, analyzed in two levels: (1) the quanti-qualitative, aiming to detect the semi-automatic emotional involvement, expression of humor in “meme discourses”; (2) the semiotic analysis of meme images. The results highlight first of all typical cases of incongruences in automatic and diatextual analysis in coding the effective emotions; furthermore they also show the peculiar function of humor, mediated by communication through memes, which is mainly a kind of ‘emotional sharing’ consisting in the complaint against a complex and precarious career path; in addition some differences in relation to the type of social media (Facebook or Instagram) are reported.

Australian Officials—And An Olympic Judge—Have Now Weighed In On Raygun's Viral Breakdancing

You probably already know this, but it never hurts to do a recap: Rachael earned zero points across three round-robin battles and whipped out unusual moves that grabbed attention, like jumping around like a kangaroo. Comedian Rachel Dratch even parodied her during an August 12 episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon , and Raygun has basically become a global phenomenon.

But not everyone is impressed: A popular petition online is currently calling for an investigation into how Raygun even made the Olympic team. Plenty of people have joked on social media that Rachael showed that anyone could be an Olympian.

No one can stop talking about Raygun, so here’s what a few people have said about her performance—from her teammate to the breaker herself.

Gilian also pointed out that Rachael won the qualifier from Oceania. “Unfortunately for her, the other b-girls were better,” he said. “That’s why she didn’t score any votes in her rounds.”

“She represented hard.”

Raygun’s Australian teammate, Jeff "J Attack" Dunne, joined in on defending the 36-year-old.

"All I know is she represented hard," the 16-year-old told the Herald Sun . "She has been the leading breaker in Australia for the women, and I acknowledge her and respect her 100 percent.”

“Good on her.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has even gotten in on the Raygun chatter.

“Raygun had a crack—good on her—and a big shout-out to her,” he told reporters in Adelaide on August 11, per the Daily Mail . “That is in the Australian tradition of people having a go. She's had a go representing our country, and that's a good thing.”

“Raygun is an absolutely loved member of this Olympic team.”

Australia’s Chef de Mission (i.e. the head of sporting events) Anna Meares has defended Raygun.

"I love Rachael, and I think that what has occurred on social media with trolls and keyboard warriors, and taking those comments and giving them airtime, has been really disappointing," she said in an August 10 news conference, per ESPN . "Raygun is an absolutely loved member of this Olympic team. She has represented the Olympic team, the Olympic spirit with great enthusiasm."

Breakdancing experts have even been rallying behind Raygun. One of those is Claire Warden, PhD , professor of Performance and Physical Culture at Loughborough University, who told Women’s Health that Rachel’s performance “made me smile.”

“The fact that there is a petition to force her to pay back the cost of her trip feels decidedly uncharitable to me,” Warden says. “Every Olympics, there are those athletes who represent their countries with no chance of winning. In more established sports such as athletics and swimming, there are always athletes who proudly wear their country's colors and yet finish last by some way. The Olympics always has these stories.”

“What I bring is creativity.”

Since going viral, Raygun has defended her controversial routines. “I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best—their power moves,” she said at a press conference on Aug. 10, according to ESPN. “What I bring is creativity.”

“All of my moves are original,” she continued. “Creativity is really important to me. I go out there, and I show my artistry. Sometimes it speaks to the judges, and sometimes it doesn't. I do my thing, and it represents art. That is what it is about.”
