5 Beginner Breathing Exercises to Help Banish Stress

We tend to take our breathing for granted. Our bodies automatically do it to keep us alive, so we don't give it a second thought. But have you ever stopped to think about happens when we breathe with purpose? The way we breathe has a direct impact on our  health, stress levels  and even  emotions . 

Breathwork has recently become so popular that Gwyneth Paltrow dedicated a whole episode to it on her Netflix series, The Goop Lab . The show highlights various techniques, including breathwork, to overcome mental and physical obstacles. However, breathwork dates back to early Hindu yogic breathing practices known as Pranayama . Prana in Sanskrit translates to "vital life force," while yama means "to control." 

Modern science shows that breathwork can transform your health and relieve stress. The best part? Anyone can do it at any time, for free. Here's what you need to try it at home.

What is breathwork?

Breathwork is essentially controlled breathing where you intentionally regulate the flow of your breathing patterns to change your mental, emotional and physical state. In every breathing exercise, you will be asked to become aware of your breath and how it makes you feel. Its purpose is to create a balance between the mind and body. There are multiple breathwork techniques that you can try, and each one has a specific effect on your body. 

What are the benefits of breathing exercises?

If you are looking to incorporate new daily habits to help ease stress, anxiety or improve your overall well-being, breathwork may be what you are looking for. People often practice breathwork exercises to help promote mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being . 

According to one study, breathwork can improve cognitive performance and reduce stress in otherwise healthy adults. The same study found that controlled breathing can potentially help reduce health issues associated with chronic stress. 

Similarly, a systematic review that analyzed eight studies on the effects of breathwork on people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease concluded that patients with COPD who practiced pursed-lip breathing had better endurance during physical activity.

Slow, paced breathing has been linked to:

• Improved mood
• Greater alertness and vigor
• Increased relaxation
• Less anxiety and depression
• Reduced symptoms of anger

Breathwork techniques for beginners

There are many breathing exercises you can do to help you clear your mind, relax and even improve physical endurance. We've compiled a few of our favorite techniques that are perfect for beginners since they are simple, quick and easy to follow.

The 4-7-8 breath: For when you're feeling stressed

The 4-7-8 breathing pattern was designed by Andrew Weil, M.D ., and is known for being the "relaxing breath." It's a simple yet effective technique for de-stressing that consists of inhaling for four counts, holding the breath for seven counts, then exhaling for eight counts. Many people use this particular technique to relieve anxiety and attain better sleep .

Weil states on his website that "practicing a regular, mindful breathing exercise can be calming and energizing and can even help with stress-related health problems ranging from panic attacks to digestive disorders."

How to practice

The first thing you want to do is place the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth, right behind your front teeth, and sit in an upright position. 

Then, follow these steps in the cycle of one breath:

1.  With your mouth closed, inhale through your nose to a count of four.

2.  Hold your breath for seven counts.

3.  Exhale through your mouth, making a whooshing sound for eight seconds.

4.  Repeat steps one to three for a total of four breath cycles.

The box breath: For clearing the mind

Box breathing, also called four-square breathing, is an easy yogic technique used to slow down your breathing. This type of breathing exercise is so powerful that people with high-stress jobs, like the military , often use it to maintain calm when their bodies go into "fight-or-flight" mode. Its primary focus is to distract the mind while you count and fill your lungs with oxygen.

Unfortunately, there aren't many studies around the effectiveness of box breathing since it's a relatively new technique, but there are studies that have found that similar breathing exercises help induce tranquility and increase attention span .

Box breathing is one of the simplest breathwork techniques and can be done almost anywhere -- at your desk, in your car or even at a busy coworking space. All you need to do is follow these simple steps.

1.  Exhale all of the air in your lungs.

2.  Inhale for four counts.

3.  Hold your breath for another four counts.

4.  Exhale for four counts.

5.  Repeat three to four times.

Alternate nostril breath: For optimal respiratory endurance

Alternate nostril breathing, also known as Nadi Shodhana, is another breathwork exercise intended to soothe the mind and body while managing emotions. This breathing exercise is a pretty common practice in yoga and meditation. Nadi Shodhana in Sanskrit means "channel cleaning breathing." As the name suggests, this technique focuses on breathing through one nostril at a time.

A small study conducted in 2017 analyzed the effects of this type of breathing practice on healthy, competitive swimmers. The study concluded that practicing alternate nostril breathing for 30 minutes a day, five days a week for 30 days, helps enhance respiratory endurance. Even though this initial study showed promising results, further research is needed to expand on the long-term effectiveness of alternate nostril breathing.

You can practice alternate nostril breathing by yourself. However, consider asking an experienced practitioner to guide you through your first time to ensure that you are doing it correctly. 

First, sit down in a comfortable position with your back upright, then follow these steps:

1.  Place your left palm over your lap and bring your right hand in front of your face. 

2.  With your right thumb, close your right nostril. If comfortable, you can place your forefinger and middle finger on the center of your forehead.

3.  Close your eyes and inhale slowly through your left nostril.

4.  Once you've taken a deep inhale, cover your left nostril with your ring finger and hold your breath for a few seconds.

5.  Uncover your right nostril and exhale. 

6.  Slowly inhale through your right nostril.

7.  Cover your right nostril again (your ring finger still closing your left nostril) and hold for a few seconds.

8.  Uncover your left nostril and slowly exhale, pausing again at the end of the exhale.

You can repeat these steps for up to five minutes.

Belly breath: For when you need to relax

Belly breathing, also called diaphragmatic breathing, fully engages your abdominal muscles, diaphragm and lungs. Contrary to normal breathing, diaphragmatic breathing expands the abdomen when inhaling rather than the chest. Our normal breaths tend to be shallow, but with belly breaths, you slowly fill your lungs with air making the breath deeper. 

Belly breathing creates a deep sense of relaxation, and is closely associated with meditation . Research has shown that meditation may reduce blood pressure and ease anxiety, depression, insomnia and chronic pain symptoms.

You can practice belly breathing lying down or sitting in a comfortable position.

1.  Place your left hand over your heart and your right hand over your belly.

2.  Inhale slowly, filling up your belly with air.

3.  Purse your lips and exhale slowly, feeling your stomach contract.

4.  Repeat up to 10 breath cycles.

Pursed-lip breathing: For controlling shortness of breath

Pursed-lip breathing is a common technique used to control hyperventilation and shortness of breath. When practicing this breathing technique, you allow yourself to slow your breathing pattern, making each breath deeper. With pursed-lip breathing, you bring more oxygen to your lungs which helps you relax .

A 2021 study found that pursed-lip breathing may alleviate shortness of breath, help you gain control over your breathing and increase your sense of relaxation. More research is needed to conclude the long-term benefits of this breathing exercise.

The first thing to do is sit down in a comfortable, upright position and relax your shoulders. Become aware of any tight muscles around the face and release the tongue from the roof of your mouth.

1.  With your eyes closed, inhale through your nose for two seconds.

2.  Pout your lips as if you are going to blow a whistle.

3.  Breathe out through your mouth for four to six counts.

4.  Repeat for five to 10 cycles.

Breathwork is generally considered to be low risk and safe for most people. However, it's important that you consult your doctor before trying out any new breathwork exercises, especially if you are pregnant or have an autoimmune disease. There is evidence that breathwork could be related to increased heart rate in rheumatoid arthritis and lupus patients.

Research the different types of breathwork exercises

We covered five breathwork techniques that are great for beginners, but there are many others that you can try. Since there are so many methods, classes and even teachers, it's important that you do your research to find the right technique for you.

Find a trusted practitioner near you

Listen to your body

Once you start incorporating breathwork into your routine, you must become aware of how it makes you feel in different parts of your body. A fter a promising 2023 box office thanks to “ Barbenheimer “ and The Super Mario Bros. Movie , 2024 is projected to go down. According to Gower Street Analytics , the 2024 global box office is expected to be less than 2023’s total. However, the domestic market in the first three months of 2024 was 1% above projections. It’s a marginal victory for theater owners but a win nonetheless.

Movies in 2024 are off to an interesting start. No Marvel or DC movie premiered in the first quarter, with the only major superhero release, Deadpool & Wolverine, coming in July 2024. The biggest hits of 2024 have been sequels, making up four of the five highest-grossing films domestically. While it’s obvious what sits at the top, there are a few surprising entries in the top 10, considering two are considered catastrophic flops. Below are the 10 most popular movies of 2024 ranked by domestic gross.

10. Night Swim ($32,494,740)

January has provided multiple horror hits over the past few years, including M3GAN  and Scream . Night Swim did not make nearly as much money as those two films. However, it’s the biggest horror film of 2024 so far, which should not come as a surprise with Blumhouse Productions behind it. Directed by Bryce McGuire in his feature directorial debut, Night Swim  stars Wyatt Russell as Ray Waller, a former MLB player forced into an early retirement.

Ray, his wife Eve ( The Banshees of Inisherin ‘s Kerry Condon), and two kids move into a new house with a swimming pool in the backyard. The pool miraculously heals Ray’s injuries, but a sinister force in the water wreaks havoc on the family. Despite negative reviews, Night Swim’s  intriguing premise and brisk runtime (98 minutes) are enough to warrant a stream.

9. Madame Web ($43,809,294)

Where to even begin with Madame Web ? The latest entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe was a cultural phenomenon for all the wrong reasons. From the puzzling dialogue about researching spiders in the Amazon to the confusing action sequences,  Madame Web  is Digital Trends’ worst movie of 2024 so far . For those who haven’t seen it,  Madame Web  stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a Manhattan paramedic who will one day become Madame Web.

After a near-death experience allows her the ability to see the future, Cassie must protect three teenage girls — Julia Cornwall (Sydney Sweeney), Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced), and Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor)—from Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim), who plans to kill the trio. Madame Web  is only on this list because it’s early in the year. However, Hollywood is in trouble if Madame Web remains in the top 10 by the summer.

8. Argylle ($45,207,275)

Matthew Vaughn , the creative force behind the Kingsman movies, attempted to launch his second spy franchise with Argylle , but it ended in disaster. Argylle (Henry Cavill) is a gifted secret agent tasked with bringing down a spy organization. However, Argylle is the fictional creation of author Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), the spy novelist behind the Argylle series.

Unbeknownst to Elly, her novels predict the future, making her the target of an evil organization known as the Division. When the Division attacks Elly on a train, Aidan Wylde (Sam Rockwell), a real spy, intervenes and saves the day. Aidan must keep Elly alive to write the next chapter and stop the Division. Unlike the Kingsman franchise that spawned multiple sequels, Argylle  will likely be one-and-done, as the film only made $45 million domestically against a $200 million budget.

All you need to know about  The Beekeeper is that Statham does what he does best: fight, kill, and wreak havoc. Cady’s friends — Janis ‘Imi’ike (Auliʻi Cravalho) and Damian Hubbard (Jaquel Spivey) — open her eyes to the social cliques of high school, led by the popular Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her group of minions known as the Plastics.

After Cady receives an invite into the Plastics, Janis convinces her to infiltrate the group and ruin Regina’s reputation. Since Mean Girls  is based on a stage musical, the cast performs numerous songs throughout the film, which garnered some unfavorable social media reactions around its release. However, the somewhat off-key singing and awkward staging did not affect the box office, as a $72-plus million domestic haul is a solid win for Paramount.

5. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire ($89, 362, 551)

In 2024, the answer to “Who you gonna call?” remains the same: the Ghostbusters. The paranormal investigators head back to where it all began, New York City, in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire . It’s been three years since the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife , and the Spengler family—Callie (Carrie Coon), Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace)—move to the Big Apple with Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd) to help re-establish the Ghostbusters.

The quartet joins Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) in the fight against a new evil force that could cause a second Ice Age. Frozen Empire  is a nostalgia play with mixed results. Although there are plans for another sequel ,  Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire  will need to have legs at the box office and surpass $100 million domestically before having any serious discussions about the future.

4. Bob Marley: One Love ($96,602,729)

Bob Marley: One Love is hands-down the surprise hit of 2024. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, Bob Marley: One Love stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as the titular Jamaican singer and songwriter. The film begins in 1976 with an assassination attempt on Marley and his wife Rita (Lashana Lynch) at a peace concert.

After surviving the gunshots, One Love  traces Marley’s career over the next few years, from the recording of  Exodus  to his meteoric rise to global superstardom. Bob Marley: One Love  doesn’t reinvent the biopic, but Ben-Adir’s performance and the landmark reggae songs should satisfy most Marley fans. The film exceeded expectations by grossing over $50 million throughout its six-day Valentine’s Day week opening, with its current domestic total at $96 million.

3. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($136,359, 532)

Critics were never going to like Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire . Do you want to know who does enjoy these monster movies? Audiences. Despite a day-and-date release in 2021, Godzilla x Kong’s predecessor, Godzilla vs. Kong , set several pandemic box office records on its way to $470 million worldwide gross. In 2024, the two sworn enemies form an unlikely alliance to battle a new threat in  Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire .

Despite the effort to tell an interesting and thought-provoking story, MonsterVerse fans are going to the movies to see Godzilla and Kong engage in epic battles, not learn about their mythology. In terms of spectacle, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire  delivers. The New Empire  is on its way to passing Godzilla vs. Kong  at the domestic box office with $134 million and counting.

2. Kung Fu Panda 4 ($166,404,960)

Never underestimate the power of Jack Black. The 54-year-old comedian is a glorified family movie star thanks to recent hits, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie,  two Jumanji films, and The House with a Clock in Its Walls . Black recently returned to his kid-friendly martial arts comedy franchise for a fourth time in Kung Fu Panda 4 . Po (Black) embarks on a quest to find his successor as the Dragon Warrior. However, the shapeshifting creature, The Chameleon (Viola Davis), threatens the Valley of Peace with her ability to copy kung fu techniques.

Po reluctantly teams up with the mischievous Zhen (Awkwafina) to save the kung fu masters from Chameleon’s wrath. Because of the lack of family movies in Q1, Kung Fu Panda 4 has found a significant audience at the theaters, earning over $165 million domestically. As long as Kung Fu Panda continues to have legs, Kung Fu Panda 5  will likely become a reality.

1. Dune: Part Two ($265,646,536)

The movie event of 2024 to this point has been Dune: Part Two .  Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated sequel to 2021’s Dune  has been met with overwhelmingly positive reviews thanks to stunning visuals, electrifying action, and sensational direction. Dune: Part Two continues to follow the rise of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), the gifted Duke who wishes to liberate the Fremen and exact revenge on the Harkonnens for murdering his father.

Originally scheduled for a November 2023 release, Warner Bros. delayed the film to March 2024 because of the actor and writer strikes. The gamble paid off, as Dune: Part Two’s $265 million domestic total is already more than Dune’s  $108 million haul.  Dune: Part Two  will likely stay in the top 10 the entire year as it marches toward the 2025 Oscars.

Dune: Part Two is now in theaters. The film arrives on digital on April 16 .

Weekend box office results: godzilla x kong holds strong, dev patel's directorial debut monkey man and the well-received antichrist prequel the first omen failed to end the reign of the monsterverse..

Godzilla and Kong teamed up once again to lead the box office, but they weren’t as strong as some had hoped. Well below them, the battle for second place came down to a spiritually reborn avenger in a monkey mask trying to take down a religious guru vs. the church masking itself in righteousness trying to birth the antichrist. Together they drew in less than the kings of the MonsterVerse, though.

King of the Crop: Godzilla x Kong Holds Strong

After an opening that surprised most of the guesstimators last week, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire surprised them again this week, even though it fell a bit back to Hollow Earth. A $28 million haul in weekend two is a 65% drop. It’s the second hefty fall in two weeks from a frontloaded piece of IP after Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire dropped a similar number. It all has a “pandemic streaming on HBO MAX” kind of feel to it all. That is not to say that the damage is already done for The New Empire . At $131 million, it has the 11th-best 10-day start for a film in March, just ahead of 300 ($129.1 million), Us ($127.8 million) and John Wick: Chapter 4 ($123.0 million). Those first two titles made $32.8 and $33.2 million, respectively, in their second frames. Godzilla x Kong is closer to Wick’ s $28.3 million, which was also a 61.6% drop from opening. That could mean the film may still come up short of the $200 million it would love to reach in order to become the highest-grossing MonsterVerse film to date. Following the John Wick path going forward would have it around $195 million, but with over $361 million in the bank worldwide right now, the film should be headed past the profit margin for Warner Bros. by next weekend.

The Top 10 and Beyond: Monkey Man Outperforms  The First Omen

Second place this week belongs to Dev Patel and his film Monkey Man . Acquired by Netflix in 2021 for $30 million, the film was later shopped around until Jordan Peele’s production company got Universal to grab it for $10 million and release it theatrically, which it did to an opening of $10.1 million over the weekend. The SXSW premiere audience ate it up (as they tend to) and critics have been strong on it on the Tomatometer. Among April releases opening between $9-12 million, Dev got the same “B+” Cinemascore as other action stars as Vin Diesel ( A Man Apart ), Steven Seagal ( Out for Justice ), and Paul Walker (the District B13 remake, Brick Mansions ). Depending on word of mouth, Monkey Man is likely headed somewhere between $25-30 million total.

Back to the aforementioned Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire , which we suggested last week might have a problem getting to $100 million domestic. Is that still a possibility? Even after it dropped 65.4% last week, it was. After dropping another 42% this week with $9 million, though, less so. It’s more likely to limp over the total like its current pacing counterpart, Darren Aronofsky’s Noah . That film had $84.9 million in its first 17 days and a $7.5 million third weekend. Frozen Empire has $88.8 million, putting it on a path to somewhere between $105-110 million, which would make it the lowest-grossing of the franchise. Internationally its numbers are not great, adding just another $49.3 million to its haul. All of the films have grossed over $200 million worldwide, but this one appears likely to come up short.

Fourth place belongs to the antichrist, or its origin, at least, as 20th Century Studios released The First Omen . Disney has not done particularly well with its acquisition releases over the years, aside from a Free Guy or an Avatar sequel. They got their horror films Barbarian and The Boogeyman  over $40 million domestic, but The First Omen is their second-lowest non-pandemic weekend after 2022’s Amsterdam . It earned just $8.3 million (and another $9.1 million internationally) for a recognizable horror entry that fell below even this year’s openings of studio releases Night Swim ($11.7 million) and Imaginary ($9.9 million). Those films registered critic scores of just 22% and 27% on the Tomatometer, while The First Omen is Certified Fresh. But horror fans being polled just aren’t buying it, as each have received a C+ or a C Cinemascore (as did Immaculate ). Marketing either missed or got skittish promoting the devil and unwanted birthing through Disney and may have left this acclaimed $30 million production to fend for itself.

Rounding out the top five is Kung Fu Panda 4 with $7.8 million. That brings its total up to $166 million. Over $410 million worldwide has already pushed the fourth film into profit. Its fifth weekend was about a million higher than John Wick: Chapter 4  but below animated counterparts The Croods ($9.2 million), Home ($8 million), and Ice Age ($8.5 million), all of whom KFP4 still maintains a $11+ million lead on. All in all, it is still headed in the vicinity of $185-190 million domestic. Right behind it with $7.2 million is Dune: Part Two , whose domestic total now stands at $264.8 million domestic and over $660 million worldwide.

The release of Someone Like You from Fathom Events grossed $3 million over the weekend. The romantic drama (not to be confused with the 2001 Ashley Judd/Hugh Jackman rom-com) is based on the 2020 bestseller by Karen Kingsbury, and the few critics who reviewed it were not exactly impressed. Mark Wahlberg and the dog known as Arthur the King hung around for another week with $1.5 million, bringing its total to $22.2 million. The $20 million film is still in the red for Lionsgate.

Michael Mohan’s Immaculate , aka the other First Omen, took in another $1.4 million, bringing is total to over $14 million. It is now firmly the third highest-grossing film in the history of its studio, Neon. Late Night with the Devil , starring David Dastmalchian, fell out of the top 10 but still made another $1.1 million, bringing its total to $8.4 million, passing The Death of Stalin to become IFC Films’ fourth highest-grossing film ever. Sony Classics’ Wicked Little Letters did get into the top 10, though, thanks to an expansion into 1,002 theaters. It grossed $1.5 million to give the company their second $1+ million release in a row after Yolo earlier last month. The Beast from director Bertrand Bonello opened in four theaters and grossed $48,000 for Janus Films. Housekeeping for Beginners from Focus also made its way into four theaters in NY and LA and grossed $45,000 in four locations.

On the Vine: Prepare for  Civil War

A24 is bringing Civil War to the country(‘s) theaters next week. The highly-anticipated (or feared) new film from Alex Garland will very likely have the highest opening weekend ever for the studio. Could word of mouth make it the event film to see until the summer season opens in three weeks? That will be the test to see if it can outgun the studio’s top grossing film of all time, Everything Everywhere All At Once .
