'Bro' Movie Review: What The Hell, Bro!
Movie: Bro Rating: 2/5 Banner: People Media Factory, Zee Studios Cast: Pawan Kalyan, Sai Dharam Tej, Priya Prakash Varrier, Ketika Sharma, Brahmanandam, Subbaraju, Urvashi Rautela and others Screenplay and dialogues: Trivikram Srinivas Music: S Thaman Director of Photography: Sujith Vaassudev Editor: Naveen Nooli Production design: A.S. Prakash Producer: T G Vishwa Prasad Directed by: Samuthirakani Release Date: July 28, 2023
Although there isn't as much hype surrounding it compared to Pawan Kalyan’s previous films, "Bro" is certainly one of the most anticipated films of the year. In the film, Pawan Kalyan played a god, and it also starred his nephew, Sai Dharam Tej.
Let's see how this film turned out.
Story: Mark (Sai Dharam Tej) is the oldest of three siblings, with two sisters and a younger brother. He lives with his mother and sisters, and he is always looking for ways to make money, never giving his time to anyone, not even his girlfriend Ramya (Ketika Sharma). In addition, he is a control freak.
He gets killed in a car accident on his way from Vizag to Hyderabad.
Mark begs Time, also known as Titan (Pawan Kalyan), the god of time, for more time so that he can complete his duties. Titan agrees, but only for the next 90 days.
How will Titan teach Mark the true meaning of life in the next 90 days, and what will Mark do in those 90 days?
Artistes’ Performances: Pawan Kalyan appears throughout the movie. Despite denying being God and referring to himself as Time, Pawan Kalyan's role is intended to be another version of "Gopala Gopala." His style, reminiscent of some of his older films, seems okay at first, but the role becomes more casual after a while. Pawan Kalyan's only activity in the film is walking or sitting and mouthing philosophical dialogues.
Sai Dharam Tej fits the bill. The main road accident in the story resembles his real-life accident. However, his performance is fairly routine, and he appears to be out of shape.
The banter between Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej contains moments of laughter, which may appeal more to fans than to the general audience.
Priya Prakash Varrier portrays Sai Dharam Tej's sister. Ketika Sharma's screen time is limited. Vennela Kishore, Prudhvi, as well as Tanikella Bharani play irrelevant roles. Raja Chembolu is okay.
Technical Excellence: Among the technical departments, cinematography is one that stands out. Sujith Vasudevan's work is especially noticeable in the sequences of Pawan Kalyan's entrance and the final scenes.
Thaman's songs aren't particularly catchy. The dialogues are merely adequate, nothing to write home about.
Highlights: The message
Drawback: No strength in the second half Pawan Kalyan’s character design Lack of strong emotions Weak songs
Analysis "Bro" is a remake of the Tamil film "Vinodaya Sitham," which was also directed by Samuthirakani. Simply put, it's the tale of a man who, after dying, is given the opportunity to make amends for his mistakes. The storyline is extremely familiar.
There are two major changes in the Telugu adaptation. In the Tamil version, the protagonist is a middle-aged man with a wife and two daughters. Here, the protagonist is a young man played by Sai Dharam Tej. Another difference is the casting of a major star like Pawan Kalyan in the part of "time." In the Tamil version, Samuthirakani played the role of "time."
Although these two alterations may have held promise on paper, they are not effective on the screen.
The first half of the film moves quickly, establishing Sai Dharam Tej's family and life, as well as the accident and his meeting with time. Time agreeing to give Sai Dharam Tej another 90 days to live, and so on, are narrated with a dose of comedy. Pawan Kalyan recreating some of his popular songs sounded funny at first. However, after the intermission, the film takes a complete 180-degree turn. It becomes too simple to take the proceedings seriously.
The writing's hollowness comes to life in the second half. All of the incidents or sequences are overly predictable. Furthermore, Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej's bar conversation and Tanikella Bharani's comedy track look ridiculous. The character of Prudhvi has no significance in the story.
Pawan Kalyan's re-enactment of old songs has also grown tedious at this point. In one scene, Pawan Kalyan simply rolls on top of a vehicle and laughs. Such sequences demonstrate that the team does not have enough material for the runtime.
Though the story's philosophy and message - everything happens for a reason and that we should treat others with kindness and compassion - are admirable, the resolution is too formulaic.
Attempts to make Pawan Kalyan's character more commercial have backfired and hurt the story. The soul of the original movie is gone. This is why the story loses its momentum in the important and final act.
Plus, the soundtrack is not the film's strong suit.
Overall, "Bro" has a promising start, and Pawan Kalyan's early sequences are entertaining, but the film loses steam as it becomes more routine. It also has plastic emotions. There is a lack of strength in the writing, and the important sequences feel rushed.
Bottom Line: Poor Writing

Bro… What happened?
What it's about
Remaking his own 2021 Tamil film, director Samuthirakani presents BRO, a Telugu adaptation that doesn’t compare to its original. The premise itself had proven potential, but instead of understanding Mark’s struggle as a breadwinner who took care of his family after the death of their father, the film offers spectacle in response. The larger-than-life, supernatural scenes could have worked, had the film dedicated them for character development (and a bit more time on the VFX). With the backing of the global giant Netflix, and the critical acclaim towards the original film, it’s a wonder how a film like BRO could end up this way.

Bollywood actress Urvashi Rautela sizzled in a dance number as Sithra Manjari in 'My Dear Markandeya.'
The movie is written and directed by Samuthirakani, based on his original work Vinodhaya Sitham. However, writer-director Trivikram Srinivas has made several changes to the script, which now deviates from the original. TG Vishwa Prasad and Vivek Kuchibotla bankrolled the movie under the People Media Factory in association with ZEE Studios. The film's entire background score and music are composed by Thaman S. Sujith Vaassudev and Naveen Nooli worked as the film's cinematographer and editor, respectively.

Bro is a special film for mega fans as it marks the coming together of Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej. The movie, directed by Samuthirakani, is a fantasy comedy-drama. Star director Trivikram penned the screenplay and dialogues. Amidst a massive fan frenzy, Bro hit the screens today, and let’s see how it is.
Markandeya, a.k.a Mark (Sai Dharam Tej), is always swamped with work, and he is the only earning member in his family. Mark is in love with Ramya (Ketika Sharma), but he neither spends time with his lady love nor his family as he has a lot of responsibilities to deal with. One day he dies in a road accident, and Mark’s soul meets Time God, a.k.a Titan (Pawan Kalyan). Mark requests Titan to give him a second chance in life so that he can fulfill his obligations. Titan gives 90 days time to Mark, and he hangs around Mark during this period. The rest of the film is about how Mark fulfills his commitments.
Plus Points:
The movie banks heavily on the performance and charm of Pawan Kalyan. The star actor is at his absolute best in Bro, and his screen presence is full on throttle. His entry scene is pure goosebumps stuff, and Pawan gave his best throughout. He evokes laughs in a few scenes with his antics. But the best part about Bro is the looks of Powerstar, which are far better than his recent flicks.
Sai Dharam Tej gives a decent performance in this fantasy drama. A few scenes between Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej came out well, and they will appeal to mega fans. The way Pawan teases Sai Dharam Tej initially is funny.
The first half has decent moments which keep the film going. Ketika Sharma does well despite her limited screen presence. It was good to see Brahmanandam and Pawan in a single frame once again. Rohini, Ali Reza, Vennela Kishore are okay in their respective roles.
Minus Points:
The movie has a nice message which emphasizes that it is more important to live in the present than worry about the future. But this has been marred by many dull scenes. The film is weak on the emotional front as the relationship between Sai Dharam Tej’s character and his family isn’t showcased well. A few scenes looked artificial. Priya Prakash Varrier has nothing much to do in the film. Had the emotions been presented even better, the message could have been more impactful.
In order to please the fans, the director added many references of Pawan Kalyan’s old songs. Though they are enjoyable initially, they become boring after a point in time. These scenes might appeal to fans, but for others, these portions will turn out to be tedious due to their over usage. Also, the movie doesn’t have a proper flow, and even a few decent scenes lacked impact due to their placement.
Except for Bro title song, the other songs are a huge drawback in this biggie. The film’s tempo goes down further during these songs, and they add no value to the proceedings. There should have been solid drama to take things to a further level, but that didn’t happen here. A few bland scenes could have been edited out to make things interesting.
Technical Aspects:
Though Thaman’s songs aren’t great, his background score is good. The music director tried to lift many scenes through his background score. The cinematography by Sujith Vasudev is neat. The production values are fine, but the VFX works could have been a lot better. The editing is sloppy, and a few portions could have been trimmed.
Coming to the director Samuthirakani, he did a passable job with the film. His focus was more on making the film appeal to the fans, but the emotions took the beating. A few redundant scenes could have been avoided totally. Pawan did his best to gloss over the loopholes.
On the whole, Bro is a fantasy drama that relies heavily on the performance of Pawan Kalyan. The star actor’s mannerisms and style will go well with fans. Sai Dharam Tej does a neat job, and a few of his scenes with Pawan came out well. The first half has some moments going its way. But the way emotions and drama is handled is not great. A few bland scenes will bog down the impact. Bro will appeal to fans, but for others, it will end up being an okay watch. Hence it is suggested to keep your expectations in check.

Live while you live and take life as it comes is the concept of BRO. Pawan Kalyan agreed to be a part of this Sai Dharam Tej’s movie under Samuthirakani’s direction. BRO is an official remake of Vinodaya Sitham by the same director. The fantasy film was released today with good expectations and let us see If Sai Dharam Tej scores a hit again after his recent success Virupaksha. Here is the BRO movie review.
What Is It About?
Markandeyulu (Sai Dharam Tej) is a busy man whose priority is work and does not really have ‘time’ for others’ emotions or opinions. Mark meets with an accident that kills him and he then gets to meet the Time/God Titan (Pawan Kalyan). Titan gives 90 days for Mark as a second chance to change things. The rest of the story is what Mark realizes and how he manages to change the obvious.
Performances
Needless to say, Pawan Kalyan steals the show. His presence is the main asset of the film. Pawan’s vintage looks and enacting his own blockbuster songs from the past is a real treat for fans.
Sai Dharam Tej is decent as an ignorant workaholic. A few scenes between Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej are good.
Ketika Sharma, Priya Varrier, Rohini, Vennela Kishore, Tanikella Bharani, and others did their part. The role Priya Varrier did, does not match her popularity and it could have been done by anyone.
Technicalities
BRO shows Pawan Kalyan in super stylish looks. The background music is good by Thaman, however, the songs are not impressive. In fact, the old songs of Pawan Kalyan worked better in small bits.
The VFX work could have been a lot better. There were many scenes that showed poor graphics. The screenplay is clumsy at times due to the series of scenes rushing.
Pawan Kalyan Dialogues & BGM Climax and Pre-climax Song
Thumbs Down
Weak Narration VFX Songs Over-the-Top Scenes
The concept is not new, but a little different from what we have seen earlier like Yamaleela to the latest Ori Devuda that dealt with the ‘second chance’. In fact, the director here made the God most of the time stay in the picture to make it an elaborate one, unlike other movies.
A man who thinks he is the center of everything realizes how things actually work upon ‘time’, even if he is not there.
The first 20 minutes are over-the-top establishing scenes and the comedy also fails to work there before getting into the actual plot. The entry of God is a powerful one.
Pawan Kalyan as Titan runs the show until the interval with his swag and old songs now and then. His mannerisms enthrall his fans the best. The bonding between Markandeyulu and his girlfriend was not established well.
Sai Dharam Tej has most of the scenes in combination with Pawan Kalyan and the latter’s presence throughout the movie is one strong asset BRO has. But the VFX in most of their scenes is pathetic.
The narrative does not get impressive due to the lack of emotional connection and it continues until the pre-climax episodes. The second half gets predictable in most parts. The climax followed by the song actually made a lot of sense than it did in the whole movie. The life lessons taught by Titan in the climax and the message asking everyone to accept life as it comes are conveyed well.
Overall, BRO has a good storyline, but the weak narrative does not let it becomes great. BRO makes a good watch for Pawan Kalyan’s fans but ‘time’ will tell how it fares at the box office.
Bottomline: ‘BRO’ – Story Proposes, Narration Disposes

What to Know
While it's nowhere near as thrilling as turtle tipping your way to 128 lives, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a colorful -- albeit thinly plotted -- animated adventure that has about as many Nintendos as Nintendon'ts.

Movie Reviews
Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, the super mario bros. movie.
Now streaming on:
I can vividly remember playing the first Nintendo version of “Super Mario Bros.” when I was just a boy in the ‘80s. It was at a friend’s house, my first buddy to get an NES, and I went home and had a dream about the game. The goofy, jumping plumber has been a part of my entertainment life ever since. I’ve passed my love for the franchise down to my boys, who have all played the stunning “Super Mario Odyssey” to completion more than once. Mario has come a long way since the notoriously awful 1993 version of his adventure starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo , but the new “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” doesn’t reflect the franchise's creativity in the slightest. The latest animated blockbuster from Illumination is their most soulless to date, a film that feels like ChatGPT produced it after data and imagery from the games were fed into a computer. It is “The Chris Farley Show” of family entertainment, mistaking making references to something that was “awesome” for actually making a movie. And it is one of the most drenched-in-desperation animated films I’ve ever seen. “Remember this?!? Remember how much you liked it?!? Please like it again!” I so desperately wanted to see something that sparked the imagination of the kid in me, like that first game, or spoke to the fun I’ve had playing installments across multiple Nintendo platforms. Instead, I got a movie that's as hollow as a trailer, something that willfully avoids anything creative or ambitious. Mario and Luigi deserve so much better.
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” opens in Brooklyn with the plumbers Mario ( Chris Pratt ) and his brother Luigi ( Charlie Day ) trying to get their new business off the ground. Some Nintendo easter eggs in the background of these initial scenes should produce a small smile from people of my generation, and there's a bit of inspiration structurally, like a clever early shot in which Mario and Luigi race through the city in a side-scrolling manner that mimics the earlier games. There’s also a nod to The Odyssey on a bookshelf in Mario’s room, implying that we’re about to watch a hero’s journey and a reference to the incredible Switch game. What follows doesn’t live up to either inspiration.
In a way that makes little sense, Mario and Luigi find a massive chamber of pipes under Brooklyn, get sucked into one, and end up in the Mushroom Kingdom, which is being threatened by the villainous Bowser ( Jack Black ). The notorious bad guy has found the Super Star he needs to make his final assault on Princess Peach ( Anya Taylor-Joy ) and the residents of her kingdom, including Toad (Keegan-Michael Key). Bowser doesn’t just want power; he wants to make the Princess his bride, singing some truly uninspired songs about his love for her. How on Earth a film like this gets a rock talent like half of Tenacious D and doesn’t let him unleash a few clever Bowser tunes is one of this film’s many mysteries.
Although Luigi lands in the pipeline that drops him immediately in the dark lands and makes him Bowser's prisoner—a dumb decision that sidelines him for an hour—Mario meets Princess Peach, who introduces him to power-ups. And so all the question-mark cubes get a chance to shine as Mario grows, shrinks, and even turns into a raccoon. They eventually recruit Donkey Kong ( Seth Rogen ), race down Rainbow Road, and save the day. That’s not a spoiler if you’ve ever seen a movie.
Fans of this movie will shout from the rooftops that the scripting for something called “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” doesn’t need to be a strength. And, to be fair, there are a few strong settings in terms of design. I enjoyed the choices made by the team in the structure of Donkey Kong Country, and the Rainbow Road “Super Mario Kart” sequence is well-directed. But I would ask why fans of a franchise that has inspired so much love for generations must be satisfied with the absolute minimum regarding storytelling.
There are so few actual decisions made in the construction of this film. It’s just a collection of visual and character references cobbled together to form a 92-minute movie. Take a risk. Just do something . Anything. It got me thinking about the fun spin-offs that could exist, like a “ Mad Max: Fury Road ” version of the “Mario Kart” sequence that gets energy out of non-stop motion. Or a version that unpacks like “The LEGO Movie” that's more sharply aware of its references and world-building—something that even incorporates the player like that movie does in the end. I swear that almost everyone who has played a game like “Odyssey” could come up with something more inventive. Heck, almost any ten minutes of that game is more creative.
It doesn’t help that the voice work is uniformly mediocre too. Chris Pratt can be charismatic with the right material, but it sounds like he pounded this out in three hours in a voice studio. Charlie Day has such an expressive voice, but the movie barely uses him. Seth Rogen is always a welcome presence, and he at least seems to be having some fun. I wish I was too.
With the nostalgia craze merging with the power of Nintendo and Illumination, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” feels too big to fail. That means we’ll get a sequel, and I expect another cycle of the debate of “critics vs. fans.” I am both. And I want a world where the people who made films for a fan base as devoted as this one don’t take that fandom for granted. This is far from over. I suspect we will get a ton of films from the NES universe, including “Donkey Kong Country” and “The Legend of Zelda” (and let’s not forget “Kid Icarus”). But we need creators who don’t just see these games as products to be referenced but as foundations on which new ideas can be built. That ‘80s kid who dreamed of Mario deserves it.

‘The Three Musketeers – Part II: Milady’ Review: Eva Green Surprises in French Blockbuster’s Less-Than-Faithful Finale
As in Richard Lester's two-part 1970s adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas novel, the villainous Milady takes the spotlight in the second half, though this time, the film inventively strays from the source.

For readers of Alexandre Dumas’ novel, extravagant French adaptation “ The Three Musketeers – Part II: Milady” packs its share of surprises: killing off important characters, sparing others and reimagining allegiances that have stood for nearly two centuries. For viewers of “Part I: D’Artagnan,” however, this swashbuckling sequel feels totally in keeping with what came before. Even the twists track, paying off what amounts to a nearly four-hour investment (not counting however many months audiences may have waited to see how the story ends).
Popular on Variety
Bourboulon isn’t the first filmmaker to split Dumas’ novel down the middle. Half a century earlier, Richard Lester directed back-to-back features, dubbed “The Three Musketeers” and “The Four Musketeers” — though the latter was rechristened “They Call Her Milady” (“On l’appelait Milady”) in France, suggesting a precedent for accentuating Green’s character in the second half. She’s an infinitely more interesting source of obsession for D’Artagnan than Constance, who comes across as beatifically banal as played by Khoudri here. That in turn makes D’Artagnan’s efforts to rescue her seem rather uninspired, as if he could be doing something better with his time — like lusting after Milady.
In this telling, Constance stumbled upon the perpetrators of the plot to assassinate the king just before the first part ended, which at least imbues the character with a certain value. Still, it’s far more exciting to see D’Artagnan and Milady together, as they are early on, fighting side by side for a change. Bourboulon’s big innovation in these films can be seen in his action sequences, which typically unfold via elaborate oners — dynamic set-pieces designed to look as though they were captured in a single unbroken shot.
During an early escape, the camera chases after D’Artagnan, running along the lofty fortress parapet. When the young hero finds himself cornered, the lensman plunges right behind brave D’Artagnan into the moat. The effect is far more immersive than most adventure movies, which use quick cutting to place viewers in the fray. The way DP Nicolas Bolduc shoots these well-choreographed, minimally edited sequences, we feel like participants in the action, as in a knife fight that comes just a few scenes later, where the nimble camera is at knee level when D’Artagnan drives a blade through his opponent’s leg.
The other musketeers have less to do this time around, though each remains sworn to protecting the honor of others. Porthos has fallen in love with Aramis’ sister, Mathilde (Camille Rutherford), and together the two confront the cad who took advantage of her. In a rather confusing (but nonetheless exciting) subplot, Athos risks his life to rescue a comrade strapped to a wooden cross. He too has unfinished business with Milady — which remains the case all the way to the end, suggesting a thread that could inspire an off-canon “Part III,” should Bourboulon care to continue the epic.
Stateside, subtitles tend to relegate movies to art-houses, where the kind of young audiences most likely to appreciate such showy theatrics rarely set foot. Like last year’s “Napoleon,” this is megaplex entertainment at its most grand. Still, it would take some clever marketing to transform this import into a “Parasite”-style phenomenon, even if both well-made offerings have the same quality: They fill an entertainment niche that American movies have all but abdicated.
