  • The Sorry Girls. The Sorry Girls are a group of friends that create home renovation content across multiple platforms. They have over two million subscribers on YouTube and 280,000 Instagram followers. The group also publishes blog posts, hosts a podcast, and operates an online shop selling home goods. 
  • The Botez sisters. The Botez sisters are professional chess players and content creators. They are active on Twitch and have a YouTube channel with 1.3 million followers. Having over one million followers means the Botez sisters receive a portion of the ad revenue from their videos. Salazar’s website links to a curated Amazon collection—she earns money when followers purchase her recommended products. Kyle Dulay, co-founder of Collabstr , shared what the journey looks like for many influencers. “Most content creators will reach a fork in the road where they can begin monetizing or choose not to. I personally think that content creators should definitely take the chance to monetize their social media presence, but they need to only work with others that align with their brand. You never want to appear as a sellout.”

When influencers begin to monetize their business and treat it like work, they have to start making serious decisions and thinking ahead. “There are many influencers that are turning what they are passionate about into a business,” says Jacob Dayan, CEO and co-founder of Community Tax and FinancePal . "Every influencer has the opportunity to turn their social media presence into a business, but they should only do it if they are ready to take it seriously and not give up.”

One way to turn a passion project into a business and to start making money is by creating a business plan. But, is a business plan really necessary for influencer businesses? We asked the experts to find out.

Do You Need a Business Plan As an Influencer?

While a business plan isn't a legal requirement, it can have a lot of benefits for influencers. 

When we asked Paola Mendez, founder of The Blogger Union , this question, she responded: “Absolutely, content creators, influencers and bloggers must treat their social media as a business if they are interested in monetizing their brand. Part of treating your social media as a business requires having the right foundation and a business plan will help with that.”

Creating a business plan is an important part of setting up your business as an influencer. “While a business plan is not necessary for success, it will most definitely give you a better chance at success,” says Dulay. “A business plan will keep you grounded as a creator; it’s the thing you can reference when you begin losing sight of the vision you set out for yourself as a creator.”

And sometimes writing things down makes them more real. “These are things that most content creators already think about,“ says Dulay. “By writing it down, you can get it out of your head and onto a piece of paper where you can easily reference your plan when you lose sight of your end goal.”

A business plan can also help your business to feel more real or legitimate. “Creating a business plan makes it easier to see your work as a business, and this mindset can be beneficial in working more effectively,” says Dymphe Mensink, content creator and influencer with 87k followers on Instagram . “You are working with brands and you are creating a product (content). Creating a business plan allows you to better set goals for yourself and to better work on different projects.” When you see your business as legitimate and worthy of your time, so will others.

So you while a business plan as an influencer isn't a requirement, it can definitely have a big impact on your business and help guide you on your path to success. For your best chance at a successful business, creating a business plan is a small investment of time. And really, the elements of the business plan are simple. Break it down into small elements and create it over time to make the process less overwhelming.

What to Include in Your Influencer Business Plan

A business plan for influencers is highly customizable. Think about it as a document that helps you to make decisions about your business and can be a reference point, so you don’t lose your brand voice or personality. What you should include is what’s most helpful to you. But, here are a few ideas of what you might find in a typical business plan .

Define Your Niche

When it comes to being an influencer, you have to intimately know your brand . One way to better get to know your brand is to define your niche. Your niche is the type of content you produce and what topics you cover.

For some people, it’s difficult to narrow down their niche. Start by defining what your niche is not to narrow it down.

Get to Know Your Audience

Your audience is the people you create content for. Without them, you don’t have a business. Your influencer business plan should include information about your target audience and how you plan to reach them.

By defining your audience and who you want to consume your content, you begin to better understand your followers. When you understand your followers, you know what type of content to create. As an influencer, your content is for your followers, so you want to make content that answers their questions, keeps them interested and solves their problems.

Write Your Mission and Vision Statements

Something to include in your influencer business plan is a mission and vision statement. Think of these as your aspirational business goals condensed into a couple of sentences or a short paragraph.

A vision statement is your vision or aspiration for yourself as a business owner and influencer. This is where you can add your dreams and passion and write down what you want to accomplish with your business.

In contrast, a mission statement is your why. It talks about why you’re taking action as a business owner and should explain your purpose as an influencer. Your mission statement can also include actions you’ll take to accomplish your vision.

One of the key elements of an influencer business plan is your goals. Goals have a number of benefits for influencers. Goals will help guide growth, but will also protect influencers. “Without measurable goals, content creators run the risk of getting burned out from posting content that has little engagement and growth,” says Mendez. “It's important to set milestones and prioritize what part of your content creation business you are focusing on at different stages in your journey.”

Goals aren’t just one and done — they fluctuate and change as your business grows. “Creating their goals will help them understand what they need to do each month or week to get there,” says Dayan.

Create Boundaries

When most people think of a business plan, they think of all the things their business will do, but the opposite can be just as important. Your influencer business plan needs to set boundaries. “Content creators should create a business plan, and it should contain a list of dos and don’ts —they can write down everything or everyone they are willing to work with and what they will not,” says Dayan.

Research Your Competition

As a business, you’re not creating content in a vacuum. The influencer world is constantly changing and evolving. To keep pace and stay up to date, one of the best things you can do is to research your competition. Mendez suggests looking for other influencers within your industry and niche, assessing the content they’re creating, identifying what makes them unique and getting inspired by what they’re creating. 

Decide How You Want to Monetize

An influencer business plan should also include how you plan to make money as an influencer. 

“Most influencers and content creators focus on monetizing their brands through paid brand partnerships,” says Mendez. “However, there are many different ways to create revenue streams once you have built an audience that is engaged and trusts your authority in your niche.” Make sure to research all the ways influencers make money and to set up multiple income streams, so you’re not fully dependent on one thing.

Choose Which Brands to Target

Something fun to include in your influencer business plan is a list of brands that you want to work with. Start out with a list of aspirational brands — all the brands you admire and would love to work with. Once you’ve built that list, try to identify what it is you like and respect about those brands.

Knowing what you like about those aspirational brands will help you to create a list of qualities you look for in future partnerships. Then, when a brand approaches you with a deal, you can quickly identify if it’s a good match or not.

Do Influencers Need an LLC?

If you’re an influencer considering a business plan, then you’re probably also thinking about whether or not you need an LLC . Whether or not you need an LLC is dependent on a few different factors. Dulay suggests, “If you’re making a few hundred here and there, it may be less of a concern, but once you start making a consistent income as a content creator, it’s almost always more beneficial to form an LLC. Funneling business transactions through an LLC will keep things more organized and also help when it comes to paying taxes.”

And, Mendez points out another benefit to forming an LLC : “you can deduct all business expenses related to your content creation. When it comes to deciding what type of corporation, I highly recommend asking a professional accountant or attorney to advise you as to what type of corporation best fits your needs.”

For some influencers, creating a business plan may seem like a lot of work for minimal benefit. But a business plan can really help influencers to legitimize their business for themselves, have a reference point for branding decisions and help them define their business brand. With all those benefits, it’s obvious how a business plan can support influencers in building a successful business.

A couple of years ago, I worked as a content writer for a literary company that just launched.

Despite all the meetings the team had before the launch, the founder and CEO of the company didn’t understand why it was important to create a content marketing strategy we’d adhere to when the website went live.

Three months after the launch, the CEO called another meeting and expressed their dissatisfaction with the poor performance so far.

Both the website and the company’s social media profiles were receiving crickets by way of organic traffic, and the paid ads were not converting at all.

I suggested that we create a content strategy plan for the next quarter and see what happens.

We did that, and sure enough, by the end of Q2, we recorded an increase in traffic and conversions from both the website and social media profiles.

And does it have to be intricate and complicated?

Absolutely not.

I love to keep it simple.

The point of this online business plan is to give you clarity and help you visualise your business, not to overwhelm you.

In case you don’t know, I have an online business that has a blog, a YouTube channel , an Instagram profile , and a podcast , as well as several digital products I sell. 

Here’s how I stay organised, how I get the clarity that I need and how I can actually create all of these content pieces as a busy mum of 2.

How to use ClickUp to create a Business Plan as Content creator

This is an organising system that you can use on your laptop, phone, or whatever you prefer. 

I used to use Trello before, but I decided to switch to ClickUp as this system offers more functionality, and I need that. 

It also has a lot of automations that I like to use, and it just makes processes simpler and quicker for me. 

If you are new to ClickUp and want to give it a try, know that they have several plans, including one that is forever free.

In my ClickUp, I have several boards created and systems that help me stay more consistent in my business.

How to Create Your Online Business Plan as a Content Creator

For my Business Plan board in ClickUp, I have five lists and these are the main things I look at when I try to have a bigger picture for my business.

1. Mission and Vision

Here I keep a few things that I have written for myself to know: 

  • what I’m trying to do
  • who I am (as a content creator)
  • why people should care about my brand and the content that I put out there.

It’s the overall mission that I have with my business.

On this list, I also have my BSA model, which stands for “Before – Solution – After”. 

This is something I teach my students in my courses.  

The idea is to try and think of your audience and imagine or figure out where they are before they come across you or your content. 

Then you want to think about how things are for them after they’ve used your content:

  • the point where they want to be
  • the transformation that they want to have
  • the goal they are trying to achieve
  • the journey they’re trying to take. 

This is their reason for following you and buying your products.

In my case, the ‘before’ is ‘my audience doesn’t yet have a business or they have just started one, and they make little or no money from it; they are confused, overwhelmed, and might have a fear of judgement or failure’. 

This is my ‘before’ point, where my audience is before they stumble upon my business and my content.

And the ‘after’ point, the result, is ‘they have a thriving business that’s possibly replacing their 9 to 5, and giving them much more flexibility and freedom in their life’.  

That’s the transformation that my clients are trying to achieve.

And then the ‘solution’ in between the ‘before’ and ‘after’ is going to be you. Your content, your programs, your products, whatever it is that you sell or create. 

In my case, the ‘solution’ is the free content that I created on mindset and business tips, and my paid courses. 

This is the BSA for my online business. 

I have another BSA for my ‘minimalism’ business. I also have a YouTube channel and an Instagram account that are minimalism-related. 

For this business, the ‘before’ is ‘audience struggling to keep on top of housework, feeling like it’s never tidy, feeling overwhelmed by the constant mess’.

The ‘after’ is a calm and peaceful home and also a clutter-free one that is easy to manage.

And then the ‘solution’ in between these two is the systems (my freebies and my content) that they’re going to use to become clutter-free. 

These are the BSA for the two sides of my online business, and these are my two missions and what I’m trying to achieve with my content and products.

2. Audience

I do encourage you to do your audience research, as this is going to be extremely helpful. 

The more you understand your people and your audience, the better your business will do. 

That’s what I have found when it comes to growing an audience and selling products. 

On this list, I have two little tasks that I’ve put in: one for my minimalism content, and one for my business content. 

I use these places to write down questions that I’ve heard other people ask or from conversations I’ve had with either students or people in my DMs.

The thing is, the more you go out there and research your audience and find out exactly what they’re struggling with, exactly how they word it, and how it’s impacting them in their real life, the more you understand them and their needs, and the better you will do in general.

So I do try to come in here and write down as many things as I can. 

Whenever someone says something that’s relevant to my business or tells me something they’re struggling with, I jot it down here. 

Having this here helps create content because it will give you a lot of ideas on what you can actually help them with through your content, and it will also help you create better products to sell, products that will do really well.

3. Brand and Vibe

This is where I put a mood board of things that I want to visually represent, what I want my brand to look like. 

I keep here my ‘Brand style guide’ with the fonts and colours that I use. I also have my ‘Brand values’.

And then I’ve got ‘Rituals and Lingo’, which contains words that I like to use in my business and little rituals that I have in my community. 

And this is one of those things that build up the community for your brand. 

A community is truly important for building a powerful brand, as people want to feel like they’re a part of something.

4. Marketing

The first thing on my marketing list is the ‘ABC marketing strategy’:

  • ‘A’ stands for awareness. I list here the platforms that I use to bring awareness to my brand, to get more views, and to get more people aware that I exist and that I have this business. 
  • ‘B’ is for building relationships. This happens through Instagram, in my stories, through email marketing, my YouTube videos, my podcast, and any platform where I have more conversations with people and build upon those relationships. 
  • ‘C’ stands for conversion, meaning transforming your audience from simply being aware of you and your brand into paying customers. In my case, I do this through my email marketing and my Instagram account. I do soft selling in my YouTube videos as well. There are more platforms out there, but these are my main ones. 

My advice to you is to think about these platforms and decide how you are going to use them in your own ABC marketing strategy.

Below the ABC on this list, I have ‘Content pillars’.  

These are just a few topics that I want to include in my content.

And then I’ve just listed the platforms that I am present on and using for my businesses – Blog, YouTube, Instagram, and then email. These are my main ones. For each of these platforms, I wrote the main goal that I’m trying to achieve at the moment. 

5. Sales and funnels

I keep here a list of my products, my programs, all of my courses, including the ones I’m currently working on, plan to create, or just some ideas that I have for things I might want to create in the future.

Content marketing is not a new strategy, but because you don’t have a content creation plan for your business, it’s one you’ve likely been neglecting.

As with most things in business, unless you have a plan or a system in place to help guide you and hold you accountable, the work isn’t going to get done.

Chances are you’re currently in a position where you have way too many competing projects and more tasks than you know what to do with competing for your attention.

Who has time for a content creation plan?

A content creation plan is not something you should push to the back burner, because having a plan in place is what will finally help you start leveraging your content in a meaningful way to get the results you want.

If you’re looking to:

  • Gain credibility and authority in your industry or niche,
  • Grow an audience filled with people who know, like, and trust you, and
  • Finally have a cohesive plan in place that helps you not only share your message and knowledge with the world, but that also helps you sell your products and services to your followers…

…then you’re in the right place, because I’m about to give you my content creation plan right here and now.

A 7-step Content Creation Plan

The whole purpose of having a content creation plan is so that you have a set of steps to follow that will help guide you and hold you accountable.

Simply put, if you can follow these 7 steps consistently, then you will gain credibility and authority, grow your audience, and be able to sell your products and services to your followers without feeling gross or guilty about it.

Step 1. Determine your content topic and type

Do you ever feel like you’re guessing as to what content you should create?

How do you know if the content you create will be useful for others – and therefore a success for you – before you spend the time to create it?

There are several different ways you can come up with topic ideas and different content types, and once you have a list, it’s all about testing and asking your avatar for feedback.

Here are a few places you can find topic ideas:

  • Visit other blogs – what are the leaders in your industry or niche focused on?
  • Engage in Facebook Groups where your avatar is hanging out – what questions are they asking or struggles are they sharing?
  • Check out industry magazines – what captions are on the cover, and what topics do they feature inside?
  • Get a question via email ever? There’s another topic :)

Your #1 goal with your content should be to serve your audience and keep them coming back for more, so it’s important that you choose a topic that will resonate with them.

By doing your research and keeping a running list of topic ideas in your Workflowy or Asana , you’ll never run out of ideas that you know your avatar is interested in.

Once you have a running list of topic ideas, it’s time to test different content types.

Until you know what content types resonates most with your avatar, you should be posting a variety in order to see which performs best.

For example, you might create a how-to blog post, then a story-based blog post, and then a comparison blog post if you’re focused on creating a blog.

Or maybe you’re focused on social media – you want to grow your Instagram or YouTube channel following, and so you would want to test out things like a before & after video, then a time-lapse video, and then a lesson-based video.

Be sure you have a metric you’ll use in order to compare the different types of content you’re posting so you can prove which ones gets:

  • The most engagement
  • The most shares
  • The most views
  • The most conversions

Once you’ve tested and know what your best performing content topics and types are, it’s time to focus on the goal of your content.

Step 2: Set a goal for your content

Ever feel like you spend sooooo much time creating your content, but that it’s not helping you actually accomplish your business goals?

That’s probably because you haven’t taken the time to set a clear goal for your content or a strategy to make sure that everything you’re putting out there is working together.

Once you know the result you want from your content, it’s going to be a whole lot easier to create it.

But how do you set a goal for your content, so that you never feel like you’ve wasted time in creating it?

First, every time you sit down to create a piece of content, ask yourself:

What is it I’m trying to accomplish here?

You might be creating a piece of content in order to:

  • Gain credibility and authority
  • Grow your email list
  • Promote a product or service you offer

Next, make sure you get super specific, because now it’s time to create a Call To Action (CTA) to put in that piece of content.

For example, if you’re creating a blog post and your goal is to grow your email list, then you should have a CTA throughout that post asking people to optin for a checklist or guide that will help them take action on whatever you’re talking about in that post.

Step 3: Choose a medium (and repurpose)

First blogging is all the rage, then everyone is talking about video, and oh!… you HAVE to start a podcast!

How are you ever going to find time to do do ALL of these things?

Good news: you don’t have to.

When you’re working on your content creation plan it should be focused on ONE medium.

You have to decide where is YOUR avatar is most likely going to be searching for content, and THAT is where you should focus.

Of course, you should be excited about creating content on that medium, too.

So, is that medium going to be:

  • A website or blog?
  • A YouTube channel?
  • A social media platform?

No matter which medium you choose, you should have a website that serves as your home base: a place where anyone who discovers you can go to learn more about you and what you have to offer. This is important because it’s a place you can own, unlike the ‘rented space’ on YouTube or social media.

Repurposing content

Once you’ve found your medium, it’s time to put together a repurposing strategy; no content creation plan is complete without one!

A repurposing strategy is meant to help you leverage your content in a more powerful way. Instead of just posting a blog, or creating a video and putting it on YouTube, you’re also sharing it across other platforms.

Doing so will help you grow your reach, and therefore, grow your audience.

For example, if your medium is blogging, imagine the power of taking every one of your blog posts and turning them into:

  • A downloadable checklist to help grow your email list
  • A podcast episode to reach those in your audience who might not have time to read your blog
  • A slideshow on YouTube for those who are more visual
  • A image post on Instagram for those on-the-go

The possibilities are endless, and your repurposing strategy should be geared towards meeting your avatar where it’s most convenient for them.

Remember: no matter where you’re repurposing your content, it should share the same, original goal.

Step 4: Establish a frequency

I’m not the first person to tell you how important creating consistent content is for gaining credibility and growing your audience.

However, I might be the first person to tell you that only YOU can decide what frequency is best for you and your audience.

In order to establish a frequency that’s going to work for you and your audience, ask yourself three questions.

1. What does your current schedule allow?

This isn’t about setting a totally unrealistic goal for yourself; it’s about figuring out what you can manage and then creating a plan to help you crush it!

2. What would your avatar want?

This isn’t just about you and your scheduled; think about your perfect reader/listener/viewer. Put yourself in their shoes, and given their schedule, their commitments, the pain point you’re helping them solve, how often would they want to consume your content?

3. How might your frequency help you reach your content goals?

It’s important to consider your content goals when establishing your frequency, because if your bigger goal is to 5x your audience, then you need to be able to prove you can do that based on the content you’re creating.

So if you look back at the past 3 months and you can attribute 2x growth because of your content, then do the math: what frequency is required to 5x your growth?

Finally, you have to commit to it.

Establishing a frequency means nothing if you’re not going to follow it, and this content creation plan is meant to help you be able to do just that.

Step 5: Create a flow

When you create a flow for your content, you’re creating predictability, peace of mind, and you’re making it a whole lot more efficient to create it repeatedly.

Even if you plan on creating free-form content, there are multiple ways you can still create some type of flow to help you save time and create smarter.

Here are some examples of ways you can create a flow for your content:

  • Create an outline you can follow as you’re creating your content;
  • Create a checklist that will help you confirm you’re not missing anything every time you sit down to create content;
  • Create a template so it’s easier for you to start;
  • Create a content bank so you’re never wasting time researching before you dive in.

Batching is also an important part of your flow and can make content creation way more efficient and your frequency much easier to commit to.

Batching is the process of taking like-tasks and doing them multiples times at once versus one at a time over multiple days.

A batching example

For example, say you’ve determined you’re going to publish a blog post one time per week. Without batching, you might find yourself creating that blog post the night before it’s supposed to go live – because, well, “other stuff got in the way.”

But with batching, you created that blog posts weeks ago, and it’s already scheduled to go live. You don’t even have to think about it.

Sounds great, right?

With batching, you sit down one day per month and over a four hour time block you create the outline, the intro and outro, and any images necessary for four blog posts.

Then, the next day, you sit down and over another four hour time block you complete those four blog posts – one at a time, but all in the same time block.

In two days, you’ve created one month’s worth of content.

Now all you have to do is get that batching method on the calendar to make sure you’re actually setting those two 4-hour time blocks aside to create your month worth of content!

Step 6: Get feedback from your audience

It’s tough to know whether or not you’re creating the right content for your avatar, and sometimes even tougher to know who your avatar actually is – especially when you’re first starting out.

Lucky for you, creating content is an exercise in continuous improvement, and the fastest and best way to continuously improve is to ask for direct feedback from those who are consuming your content.

This will not only help you confirm you’re creating the right content, but it will also give you key insights into who your avatar is based on the conversations you have with these individuals.

So how exactly do you go about doing this?

1. Ask your audience for a one-on-one conversation

This is the BEST way to get direct feedback straight from your potential avatar. Ask them what they like, don’t like, and what they want more of when it comes to your content.

2. Create a poll in an FB group where your avatar is hanging out

See what the majority of those who are interested in your content have to say about a specific question or topic that will help you learn more about them.

You could also put together a survey to find out more about your avatar if you already have an existing audience.

3. Create engaging content

Never be the one to end the conversation.

Every piece of content you create should keep your reader/listener/viewer involved to the very end, and whatever your CTA, it should be so intriguing and easy for them to take action on that they can’t help but do it!

Close out your content with a question to continue the conversation. Or share your email address so they can reach out to you directly. Always let your avatar know you’re there for them and that you encourage interaction.

Once you start having one-on-one conversations with your avatar you’ll never have to guess as to whether you’re creating the right content or not.

Step 7: Put together your content creation plan

Now that you’ve built a solid foundation; made a lot of important decisions about your content’s topic, type, goal, medium, frequency, and flow; and you’ve started getting real feedback from your ideal customers, it’s time to put it allllll together in a content creation plan.

Having a content creation plan will help you:

  • Not only share your message and knowledge with the world, but that also sell your products and services to your followers.

It will also help you implement things like:

  • An actual schedule for ongoing content creation, and
  • An ongoing promotional schedule so you’re not just spending time creating your content, but also getting it out there for your ideal customer to find!

So given everything you’ve established thus, it’s time to put a plan in place you can follow moving forward, and your plan should include scheduling (actually put it in your calendar):

  • Your creation time (always stay 1 month ahead)
  • Your publishing time (always stay 1 month ahead)
  • Your repurposing time
  • Your promotional time

Then, it’s just about rinsing and repeating!

With your content creation plan in place, you’ll never have to start over at square one again.
