Resume Format

The most acceptable and readily used format for college students is the chronological resume, in which your most recent experience is listed first. How you choose to construct your resume, in terms of style, is up to you. For example, placing dates on the left or right or whether your contact information should be centered or on the left-hand column is entirely your choice. The one rule to remember is that consistency is the name of the game. Always maintain the same style throughout your resume.

  • Contact Information:  Put your contact information at the top of your resume. It should include your name, address, phone number, and email address. If you plan to relocate soon it is acceptable to list a permanent address.
  • Objective:  For most college students seeking internships or entering the professional job market, stating an objective on your resume is not necessary. Instead, bring out your interests in a cover letter that is customized for the specific job to which you are applying.
  • Education:  List your degrees in reverse chronological order, with the most recent degree first as well as any study abroad experiences you may have. You may also include relevant coursework to highlight specific skills and knowledge. If your GPA is 3.0 or above, go ahead and list it in this section.
  • Experience:  List your most recent experience first and do not overlook internships, volunteer positions, and part-time employment. Use action verbs to highlight accomplishments and skills.
  • Academic Projects:  If you have specific academic projects that qualify you for the position, include them in their own section with detail on what you accomplished through the project that the person reading your resume should know.
  • Additional Information:  This section may stand alone under the “Additional Information” heading and highlight relevant information that may include computer and language skills, professional associations, university and community activities (including any offices held), and interests.
  • Other Headings:  Choosing to break out information such as interests and professional associations as separate headings is acceptable if relevant to the position.  Sharing personal information (i.e. birthday) or attaching a headshot is not acceptable unless relevant to the position.
  • References:  Do not list your references on your resume. A prepared list of 2-4 references should be printed on a separate sheet of paper that matches your resume format. Bring a hard copy (or multiple copies, if needed) of your resume and references with you to the interview.

Curriculum Vitae vs. Resume

Curriculum Vitaes (CVs) and resumes have three major differences: length, purpose and layout. A resume is a brief summary of your skills and experience over one or two pages. A CV is more detailed and can stretch well beyond two pages. The resume will be tailored to each position whereas the CV will stay put and any changes will be in the cover letter. A CV has a clear chronological order listing the whole career of the individual whereas a resume’s information can be shuffled around to best suit the applicant for any given job description. A CV is intended to be a full record of your career history and a resume is a brief, targeted list of skills and achievements.

NOTE: International students: when applying to positions within the U.S., one-page resumes are standard practice. In the U.S., a curriculum vitae (CV) refers to a summary of qualifications and education that is usually more than one page and is used when applying to academic/faculty or research-related positions. Employers prefer resume formats which are minimal and easy-to-read, unless otherwise specified. Personal information like birthdate is omitted to protect candidates from job discrimination as prohibited by federal laws.

Resume guidelines that differ from non-U.S. Resumes/CVs:

  • Avoid colorful fonts or use of tables
  • Minimal personal info (no birthdate, picture, height, country of origin)
  • Omit pronouns
  • Include industry terms when appropriate
  • Share only relevant information (be able to justify content to an employer)

  • Your Street Address (City, State, and Zip Code)
  • Employer’s Name
  • Employer’s Title
  • Company Name
  • Company's Address
  • Greeting (Dear __________________,)
  • Section 1: Tell what position you are applying for and how you found out about the position. State why you are interested in the organization.
  • Section 2: Explain and expand briefly how you meet the company’s needs. State the educational, skill and personality traits that prepare you to contribute to the company in a unique way. Give example of something you did that relates to the position and reference to the enclosed documents/your resume. DO NOT put "see resume" for details. The cover letter should guide them to or make them want to read the resume for more information.
  • Section 3: Give a time frame in which you will call to arrange an interview, or indicate that you hope to be hearing from them soon, and indicate the best way to reach you.
  • Section 4: Thank them for their time and consideration.
  • Your signature
  • Enclosure: List any supporting documents that are included (resume, writing sample, etc)

Human Resources

Resume formats, there are many resume formats, however the two most commonly used are:, chronological.

A Chronological resume lists and describes your work history in reverse chronological order with your most recent position first. Most employers prefer this resume style because it is straightforward and clearly outlines your background to the reader.

This type of resume is best when:

  • You are seeking a position in the same field that is either a lateral move or the typical next move along the career path for that occupation
  • The duties and accomplishments in your most recent position relate closely to the requirements and qualifications for the job you are applying to
  • Your career path has shown steady progress and increasing responsibility
  • Your work history has no or only short (under a year) gaps
  • Calls attention to employment gaps
  • Skills may be difficult to spot if they are buried in position descriptions

Functional Resume

A Functional resume focuses on areas of skill or expertise (e.g., management, public relations, computer programming, financial planning, communication) rather than organizing your duties and accomplishments chronologically under each position you've held. To develop a Functional resume, start by choosing three to four skill areas that are relevant to the types of jobs you will be applying. List those as headings then include specific examples of when you used each skill.  An employment history section that includes job title, employer and dates of employment follows the skills area as another aspect of the resume.

This type of resume may work best when:

  • You are changing careers and want to focus on your transferable skills rather than job specific skills
  • You have been employed by the same organization and in the same role for a long time
  • Your work history contains large gaps (over a year) in employment
  • You want to highlight skills acquired through internships or volunteer work
  • The skills and experience you want the employer to notice first are from earlier in your career
  • Employers may be most interested in your most current employment and current skills
  • Employers are accustomed to viewing chronological resumes so functional resumes can receive less attention
  • May be more difficult to write because organizing skills under functional areas can be challenging

Resume Tips for Specific Fields

Arts and communication.

  • Portfolios/work samples are sometimes expected and should be noted on your resume. If you have an online portfolio, include a link in your resume contact information heading.
  • Graphics are invited in this field and will be seen as a demonstration of your creativity.
  • It's okay to translate your internships into job titles that accurately describe your duties, e.g. using Public Relations Assistant instead of the official job title of Student Assistant.
  • For journalism opportunities, include fluency in other languages if applicable.
  • In most cases "management" isn't a very realistic objective.
  • Focus on a particular area—finance, marketing, human resources—and express long-term interest in management.
  • Business employers are interested in results.  Be sure your resume highlights specific achievements, times when you exceeded goals, etc.
  • Quantify your experience: "Increased sales by 30%." Show accomplishments in previous experience.
  • Stress tangible leadership experience when listing extracurricular involvement.
  • List transferable skills such as time management, conflict resolution and decision making.

Human Services

  • For many of these occupations, experience as a volunteer is considered a strong measure of knowledge and commitment. List key responsibilities and outcomes.
  • For teaching jobs, experience you had working with young people and any tutoring or teaching experiences are important.

Life Sciences/Physical Sciences

  • Research and lab techniques should be listed for jobs in these fields. List scientific techniques you are most familiar with or have recently used.
  • Because the employer may be looking for certain majors, your education should be near the top of your resume.
  • Healthcare jobs place a strong emphasis upon communication skills, including bilingual ability.
  • Include science organization memberships.
  • Employers in this field prefer objectives that are precise, indicating a particular area of interest or expertise.
  • Include technical courses and projects to support interest and objective.
  • GPA should be included.
  • Break technical skills into subcategories. This will make it easier for the reader to pick up the specific skills they are looking for (i.e. Operating Systems, Hardware, Software, Networking and Programming Languages).
  • Be sure your resume is loaded with keywords denoting skills. Have a text version of your resume for sites requesting this format.
  • Including both technical and non-technical work experience demonstrates experience working in professional settings.

Graphic Designer Cover Letter

Many companies ask candidates to send a cover letter with their resumes. However, the cover letter isn’t a prerequisite to convincing the employer to invite you for an interview. Instead, it strengthens your job application and diverts the recruiter's attention toward your resume.

A graphic designer cover letter, or a motivation letter, gives the employers a quick sneak peek into your interests, skills, education, and work experiences. This one-page document is important for a marketing agency looking for a graphic designer with specific job requirements.

An employer can quickly understand a candidate's potential through their cover letter. Meanwhile, this document can also help candidates stand out from the hundreds of applications a hiring manager receives daily.

Let’s know what a compelling graphic designer cover letter includes and how you can easily write one.

Is a Cover Letter Important?

According to Glassdoor’s e-book 50 HR and Recruiting Stats That Make You Think , a hiring manager receives more than 250 resumes for a job post. Of these resumes, 4 to 6 candidates receive the interview invitation, and only 1 gets the job. This means you need to do something extra to stand out from the other candidates.

That’s when a cover letter can help you out. This document helps you give multiple reasons to the employer to prefer you over other applicants.

Since a CV is usually concise, you can’t write down all of your professional achievements, awards, and skills in it. In contrast, a graphic designer cover letter allows you to highlight all your relevant accomplishments and experiences in more detail.

Many companies don’t specifically ask for a cover letter. However, it’s good to send one along with your resume to show your willingness and interest in the job post.

What Should a Graphic Designer Cover Letter Include?

A graphic designer cover letter includes four crucial elements to describe your professional experience, achievement, and education. These are:

Contact Details

Many applicants skip contact details in their cover letters because they have already included the information in their CVs. However, remember that your cover letter is not a complementary part of your CV, and hiring managers consider both documents separately.

Mentioning contact details in your cover letter eliminates an employer’s need to look everywhere for your contact info. Instead, they can quickly ring you after reviewing your graphic designer cover letter.‍

Opening: Showcasing Your Interest in the Job Post

You only have a few seconds to convince the recruiter to hire you. So you need to hook them with your opening few sentences. Unfortunately, many employers usually ignore cover letters because the documents might seem unorganised, boring, or too long to read.

Therefore, your first sentence must include your strengths to keep the hiring manager interested till the end.

After that, discuss your skills and professional achievements relevant to the job vacancy. This will show the manager that you’ve devoted some time to reading the job post.

Simply put, this is where you can tell the employer that you’re the right fit for this job post. So make sure to keep these tips in mind while writing a cover letter opener:

Start with mentioning your employer’s name. If not provided, you can write "Dear Graphic Design Team Hiring Manager”.

Always use "Ms." instead of “Miss” or “Mrs.”

Add your portfolio link for extra points.

Body: Showing Your Strengths, Skills, and Achievements

Now that you’ve set the bait, the next step is to reel the hiring manager in. Your next para should highlight your strengths and skills related to the requirements mentioned in the job post. It will also make your application unique from others.

If you don’t have sufficient professional experience in graphic designing, you can emphasise your strengths more. For instance, “ I am proficient at creating aesthetic social media marketing posts, brochures, flyers, logos, and infographics. ”

Imagine that you’re also an expert in running multiple design-related programs and software. It will be excellent to bring the recruiter’s attention to this skill set in the body of your cover letter.

For example, you can write, “ I know how to create appealing graphics with Adobe Illustrator, Lightroom, and Photoshop. "

Achievements

Now comes your achievements. Writing down your design-related achievements will tell the recruiter how you can help them. But before that, you need to determine the requirements of your hiring managers.

Let’s say the manager is looking for:

Increased conversion rate

Quick profit

In such a case, the middle part of your cover letter must look like this:

“ Serving as a graphic designer for 10+ years, I'm motivated to work with the design and development team at ABC Company. You already have an exceptional team, but my presence will open more doors for you in the market.

Here is how I have helped my previous employer:

My social media ads attracted more traffic to the client’s e-commerce website, leading to a boost in conversion rate by 20% in 16 months. This ultimately generated more sales and revenue for the company.

Completed 100+ graphic design projects annually. It convinced the existing customers to book more design projects with the company, leading to more profit.

Contributed to a website that won the Best Shopify Design Award. ”

Ending Note: Gratitude and Call to Action

Lastly, write a few words of gratitude to the potential employer for taking the time and reviewing your cover letter. Next, write a strong sentence in the end that shows your interest, passion, and willingness to work with the employer.

You can also add a “call to action” to finish a cover letter that puts a mark on the recruiter’s mind. Since you’re selling your skills in the cover letter, you need to sound interested but not needy or pushy.

One exemplary ending note could be:

“ I am curious to see what I can do for your company. Can we meet someday to discuss my ideas about enhancing the functionality of your website by 25% in the next 10 months?

Best Regards,

John Smith, Graphic Designer

PS—I'd love to show you how I enhanced the revenue rate of my previous client by 20%! ”

Tips for Writing a Compelling Graphic Designer Cover Letter

Remember these tips when writing your cover letter for the perfect execution:

Your cover letter should be business-focused, but don’t go for an overly formal one. Avoid using templates, technical jargon, and complicated speech patterns.

Briefly mention your personal qualities or relevant experiences in the cover letter.

Don’t repeat your resume’s academic information in your cover letter. If you’ve mentioned the institute names in your resume, describe your volunteer work or research assistance in the cover letter.

The appropriate length of a cover letter is 3 to 5 small paragraphs, which should take almost half a page.

Once you’re done writing your graphic designer cover letter, proofread it to rectify any spelling mistakes or awkward phrases.

How Do I Write About Myself As a Graphic Designer?

Write about yourself as a graphic designer by hooking the hiring manager with your strengths. Then, you can elaborate on your skills, such as the design software you’re proficient at, and the achievements you scored with your previous employer.

What Are the 4 Elements of a Cover Letter?

The four elements of a cover letter are:

Your contact information

Introduction or opening

Body, usually two paragraphs

A closing statement

A hundred times YES. An effective cover letter will convince a potential employer that you’re the best fit for the job by selling your skills, qualifications, and personality. Using words, you should paint a picture of the future impact you could have in the company and articulate how your past experience could help the company hit its goals.

Which template is best for a cover letter?

The choice of a cover letter template depends on your industry. If you’re applying to a more traditional company, opt for a minimalistic cover letter template in black and white or gray scale. If you’re after a job in a more hyp, startup-like company, consider a more creative template, perhaps one featuring a photo or a professional tagline on top.

What does a modern cover letter look like?

A modern cover letter is a one-page, web-friendly document, most times in PDF format. Use an appropriate professional greeting (hello, hi) and the person’s or company name, instead of the old-fashioned “dear Sir/Madam” or the trite “To whom it may concern”. Modern cover letters are also more permissive in terms of design. You can use color (as long as it doesn’t affect readability) and include a headshot and professional tagline in the header area for  personal branding purposes.
