All our thesis books are finished to the highest standard and lettered in gold or silver along the spine and can also be lettered on the front board. Several colours are available for the covers of your thesis, see here for options.

Hardbound Thesis Binding

These are sewn and case bound in professional quality Library Buckram cloth up to approx. 400 pages 90gsm. The binding is thread sewn and glued for maximum durability. With thick 3mm high density boards offering a rigid finish and solid feel. Flat back spine is standard but can be rounded if requested.

The soft binding is also of the highest quality and secured using adhesive, bound with drawn on Buckram cover up to approximately 400 pages 90gsm.

Hard Binding

All hard bindings are case bound in library buckram to your University specifications. As with all our bindings our experience is stitched in as well.

We use 3mm grey board covered in Arbelave library buckram. Library buckram is a woven cloth with a semi gloss coating for durability and water resistance. We round and back all our text blocks the traditional way.

Front cover and spine

No cheap printed covers here! We de-boss with brass type as it would have always been done. Lettering is in gold foil, font style is 18point Times New Roman condensed standard. Spine lettering is included in the binding price usually degree, year and name.

Not always in that order check your University specs. Front cover lettering is available for an additional £10 per order and includes title, name, degree and year. As per your University requirements. Universities do not require their logo/crest on the front cover.

Soft Binding

Perfect bound to University Specifications. The binding is in library buckram on flexible white card and has a contemporary square spine. We use 300gsm card stock covered in Arbelave library buckram. All soft bindings are Thermal glued and then trimmed on three sides for a clean final edge and smooth modern look. This type of binding is non permanent.

No printed covers here either! We de-boss with brass type the traditional way. Choose from the following colours Cover colour (for hard and soft only): Black, Bottle green, Maroon, Navy, Purple, Regal Blue and Ruby Red.

Simple Binding

Perfect bound with a black cloth/tape spine a clear acetate cover and 300gsm black backing card as standard. Thermal bound with a hot glue on the spine; this type of binding is an alternative to comb, spiral or wire bound books. The cloth spine is sometimes referred to as a tape spine. The cloth spine strips come in several colours if required as well as navy, or white backing card(unavailable for online orders). Contact for options.

Comb Binding

Plastic comb spine a clear acetate cover and 300gsm black backing card. Like spiral or wire binding the document is hole punched on the spine and the spiral mechanism is inserted. This type of binding is inexpensive so good for dissertations, reports, essays, anything that will be used often and not necessarily retained. Opens flat. Bound in single sheets. Usually accepted by universities that require spiral binding but make sure you check.

Dissertation Print and Bind Service

Our order form will take you step-by-step through the process of ordering your finished Dissertation. The form is split into several pages, described below. To order, just click on one of the order buttons below.

If you are printing and binding your document for personal use rather than following university regulations, we recommend using our bespoke binding service – this gives you much more freedom on designing the finished product.

First, you specify the number of copies of the bound Dissertation you require. So if you require 1 Hard-bound and 1 Velo-bound copy, you would enter 2 in the Number of Copies box.

The majority of our customers require printing, so the form defaults to this. If you are printing the document your self, please tick the box stating that you do not require printing and provide the information requested.

If you do require printing, please let us know the number of Black and White pages in a single copy of the book, and the number of colour pages. The form will automatically calculate the total cost based on the number of copies. For example, if your document is 200 pages of black and white you would enter 200 in the Black and White Printing Quantity field. Do not double the number of pages if you ordered more than one copy, we do this calculation for you.

We offer a PDF checking service to make sure that your document will print perfectly for the binding. Let us know if you have any pages you want us to specifically check (5 maximum).

Firstly pick the turn-around time. This tells us how urgently you need your binding completed.

Then let us know how many of each binding type you require. So if you wanted one hard binding and one velo, you would enter 1 into the relevant fields.

We offer a selection of extras that can be added to your bound books. You can leave the fields blank if you do not require anything or specify how many you would like of each in the relevant fields.

Binding Style

Here you can pick the cover colour for your hard and soft bindings. You can either pick by University or by colour. This allows you to select a prefered colour for your own personal copy if you wish!

This allows you to specify the lettering details for your hard and soft binding. Simply complete the fields.

Let us know if you want us to ship the finished books to you or if you will collect them. We offer FREE shipping to many London Universities or you can specify any address you like. You can also specify multiple addresses if you ordered more than one copy too.

Additional Details

We can take photos of your finished Dissertation before we ship it. This is ideal if you have the book shipped straight to the University and you never see it.

We offer two delivery services: UK delivery Delivery to anywhere in the UK mainland and it typically takes 3-4 working days. Deliveries to outside the UK mainland and the Scottish Highlands typically take 4-7 working days. Express central London Your thesis will be delivered either the day the order is processed or the following working day. This service is only available to the following postcodes: EC1, EC2, EC3, EC4, WC1, WC2, W1, NW1 and SE1.

Printing on good quality 100g paper: B/W throughout: 10p per side Colour & B/W mix: 20p per side Front cover foiling: £12 per bind. Documents are usually a mix of B/W and colour so we have calculated a special reduced rate of 20p to accommodate this. These prices are for students only and already include student discount. The printing prices are only for when we print the entire document. If only parts of the document require printing or any customer collation is required different timescales and printing prices will apply.

When will it be ready?

We have a handy tool to calculate when your thesis will be ready for all of the options available.

For collection in-store orders we offer a 48, 24, 4 or 2 hour service. This includes the printing time. If ordering online the timeframe chosen does not start until the order has been received and processed by our staff. This can take up to an hour during peak periods and only between 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. Orders received outside this time will not be begin until 9am the next working day. Orders for Standard UK delivery will be ready for dispatch within 2 working days and couriers will then deliver within 1-2 working days. Orders for Express central London will be delivered either the day the order is processed or the next working day. There may be a delay if delivery cannot be made. The 2 hour service may not be available during peak times so please get in contact in advance to discuss. We do not take advance bookings.

Cover & Spine Format

We can bind with black or blue Buckram cloth to your university's specification, you'll just need to let us know whether you'd like soft or hard covers and the information for the spine e.g. PhD 2024 SMITH, A. Foiling can be gold or silver. If you would also like your front cover foiled you will need to supply us a single page PDF of the front cover. The PDF must be B/W and contain only text and small simple line images only. Anything else may not print properly.

Printing & Binding

All of our theses are bound using extra strong glue along the spine. You can either bring us the document ready to bind or we can print it here on good quality 100gsm paper. We may not accept pre-printed documents which we decide are too curly to be bound. We can bind between approximately 25 and 435 sheets of 100g (depending on the paper) in one volume. A blank sheet is inserted at the front and back as standard. Larger theses are split into two volumes (please check with your college or university if multiple volumes are accepted). We only bind A4 sheets so all A3 sheets will be scaled down to A4. We only bind theses in portrait (long edge) so all landscape pages are automatically rotated to portrait. Both soft and hard bound thesis are glue bound. We do not check the layout, content or margins of your document so you must ensure what you send us is correct to your university's specification.

Dissertations can be daunting and it can be hard to know where to begin!

We’ve rounded up support and expertise from across King’s to help you plan your time, develop your skills and complete your dissertation with confidence.

Get the basics right

It may sound obvious but keeping well can help you manage pressurised situations.

By working late into the night, skipping meals or reaching for quick snacks, it may seem like you are putting your studies first. But these habits are not sustainable in the long run and can affect your concentration.

Prioritising good sleep, drinking enough water and eating nourishing meals will give you the foundations to flourish. Check out this guide to living well on Student Services Online.

Be prepared

Avoid surprises by making sure you understand your department’s requirements and deadlines for dissertations.

If you need to borrow a laptop you can borrow this from King's. Laptop loan cabinets can be found across all our campus libraries. 

Organise your reading list and familiarise yourself with the sources you will use, whether that’s from King’s Libraries & Collections , external archives or participants in your research.

Keep in contact with your supervisor to let them know how you are getting on. Don’t be afraid to ask them for guidance if you feel unsure!

There are plenty of resources available to help you develop the skills you need to research, write and edit your dissertation.

King’s Libraries Learning and Skills Service (KLaSS) offers a range of e-learning, covering everything from helping you navigate academic sources and referencing them correctly, making use of Special Collections & Archive material to managing research data. You can also find out more about how Libraries & Collections can support you during your studies  on Student Services Online.

If you need to produce a systematic or literature review for your dissertation or want to improve your searching skills then register for a KLaSS workshop . If you want to discuss your research with a librarian you can also do so through the one-to-one appointment service , forums or drop-in sessions .

King’s Academy run online workshops and one-to-one sessions on academic skills for master’s students and you can sign up on their dedicated KEATS pages. From narrowing down your research area through to enhancing your writing and proofreading skills, they can support you during every step of the dissertation process.

Putting pen to paper can feel intimidating, especially if you have been researching for a long time. You could try writing alongside others at Just Write , an online retreat for master’s students who want to work on their dissertation in a collaborative environment. You will be encouraged to set goals for the workshop, holding you accountable to get things done. Sign up on the King's Academic Skills for Learning KEATS page under 'Summer 2022 - Workshops'. Please note that you will need to self-enrol for the course to be able to access the resources.

Plan your time

A clear plan of action can help you feel in control.

King’s Academic Skills for Learning on KEATS has tips to for studying smarter and managing your time and your studies. You can also book one-to-one online sessions with Academic Skills Tutors.

Research shows that we can only concentrate for 30 – 45 minutes at a time. Form a plan that is achievable, splitting your research into manageable chunks. Make sure to include breaks and down time away from your desk.

Keeping moving and mindfulness is a great way to clear your head. Pilates, tai chi and yoga are just some of the free online classes available with King’s Sport Move Your Mind . Why not try something new when you need a break?

Remember that routines should be flexible enough to live with. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t stick strictly to your plan. Writing a dissertation is a long process and you can start afresh tomorrow.

Get the support you need

Support is always available at King’s.

It can be tempting to bottle things up. But talking about how you are feeling with friends and loved ones, the Chaplaincy or your personal tutor , can really help. 

If you are struggling, there are a range of wellbeing services available. You can also reach out to your Faculty Wellbeing and Welfare Advisor  and explore your wellbeing with their student e-module .
