Pharmacy Technician Cover Letter

Your cover letter, your prescription for a career in the pharmaceutical world : a potent blend of professionalism and precision.

As a Pharmacy Technician, you hold the vital responsibility of ensuring the health and well-being of patients through accurate medication management, and your cover letter should reflect that dedication.

In this article, we will be your guide on a journey to craft a cover letter that stands out in the pharmacy job market, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting your career.

These are the main points we’ll cover together:

  • Gain insights into how to make a compelling case , even with limited direct experience.
  • Learn what certifications can give you an extra edge in any selection process.
  • Access sample cover letters tailored for both aspiring and experienced pharmacy technicians.

Let’s embark on this journey to create a standout cover letter that opens doors to your pharmacy career aspirations.

How to Overcome Your Lack of Experience When Applying for Pharmacy Technician Jobs

Breaking into the field of pharmacy without prior experience can be difficult for someone with little or no experience. However, with the right approach, you can turn potential weaknesses into strengths and make a lasting impression on recruiters.

Here’s how:

Highlight Transferable Skills

Transferable skills are competencies you’ve acquired in one setting that can be applied to another. For aspiring pharmacy technicians, these skills can bridge the gap between unrelated job experiences and the demands of a pharmacy environment.

For example, if you’ve worked in a customer service role, you’ve likely honed your ability to communicate effectively, manage stressful situations, and handle customer queries with patience and empathy.

In a pharmacy, where patient interaction is frequent and often involves explaining medication instructions or insurance details, these skills are invaluable.

“In my previous role as a Customer Service Representative at XYZ Company, I regularly interacted with clients to address their concerns, explain complex information in understandable terms, and ensure they left with a positive experience. I believe these communication skills, coupled with my ability to handle high-pressure situations, make me well-suited for a pharmacy technician role where clear patient communication is paramount.”

This example directly ties the candidate’s past experience to the requirements of the pharmacy technician role. It showcases the candidate’s ability to communicate complex information—a skill essential for explaining medication instructions to patients.

If you have a career gap in your resume , establish clear connections between your transferable skills and pharmacy tasks. Spotlight how you honed these skills during your hiatus and express your confidence in applying these effectively within the pharmacy context.

Pursue Relevant Certifications

Certifications can provide a solid foundation for those new to the pharmacy field. Additionally, it demonstrates commitment to the profession.

Find below some sought-after certifications you should consider:

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)
  • Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT)
  • Certified Compounding Pharmacy Technician

By pursuing these certifications, even those without direct experience can demonstrate their dedication to the field and their readiness to take on the responsibilities of a pharmacy technician.

Crafting a Standout Cover Letter for Seasoned Pharmacy Technicians

As a seasoned pharmacy technician with a wealth of knowledge and experience, your cover letter becomes a powerful tool to convey your expertise and enthusiasm for the pharmaceutical field.

Technical proficiency is a key aspect that can truly set you apart from the competition.

Let’s take a closer look at this in the following section.

Technical Proficiency: Staying Ahead with Pharmacy Software

Being well-versed in the latest pharmacy management software and technology not only streamlines daily operations but also enhances patient care. This is why recruiters often look for technically savvy candidates.

Consider mastering a few of the software applications mentioned below and become every employer’s ideal employee:

  • Epic Willow
  • Cerner PowerChar
  • McKesson Pharmacy Management System
  • Pyxis MedStation
  • QS/1 Pharmacy Management Systems
  • Parata Systems
  • Omnicell
  • Liberty Software
  • Surescripts

Candidates who invest in acquiring expertise with these pharmacy software applications not only demonstrate their technical aptitude but also contribute to increased efficiency, reduced errors, and improved patient care in the pharmacy setting.

Technical proficiency can be a distinguishing factor in any selection process.

How to Craft a Compelling Narrative as an Experienced Pharmacy Technician

Rather than simply stating your experience in customer care or pharmacy management software, substantiate your claims with specific examples that showcase your expertise in action.

Doing so not only enhances your credibility but also makes your cover letter more compelling and unforgettable.

To achieve this effectively, ensure that your cover letter includes:

  • Achievements : Highlight your skills and accomplishments in the respective areas, providing tangible evidence of your capabilities.
  • Concrete data : Incorporate quantifiable data whenever possible to illustrate the impact of your contributions.
  • Contributions : Describe how you actively contributed to the success of a pharmacy operation.

Including these kinds of specific and detailed examples provides potential employers with a clear and convincing portrayal of your skills and expertise, making your claims more persuasive.

Let’s look at some examples.

As a pharmacy technician at [Previous Pharmacy/Company Name], I leveraged advanced pharmacy management software, including [Name of Software], to implement a streamlined prescription filling process. This technology-driven approach resulted in a remarkable 30% reduction in patient wait times.

This is a strong example because it succinctly demonstrates the candidate’s ability to adapt and use modern pharmacy management software to achieve a significant and measurable improvement , a 30% reduction in patient wait times.

It highlights both their technical proficiency and their positive impact on operational efficiency, making them a valuable asset to a prospective employer.

While working at [Previous Pharmacy/Company Name], I used some software to help with prescription filling, which made things a bit faster for patients.

In this case, essential details and specificity are missing . It fails to mention the name of the software used, making it unclear whether the candidate has experience with relevant, industry-standard tools.

Additionally, the statement is vague about the extent of the improvement, merely stating that it made things “a bit faster for patients,” without quantifying the impact.

Securing Success: Sample Cover Letter for Seasoned Pharmacy Technicians

In this section, we present sample cover letters tailored for experienced pharmacy technicians. This cover letter example is designed to inspire and guide you in creating a persuasive introduction to your job application .

Drawing from real-world experiences and industry expertise, this example will help you craft your own cover letter effectively and gain attention in the pharmaceutical field.

I would like to apply for the Pharmacy Technician position being offered by [Company] on Indeed.com. As a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) with over 6 years of experience in the sector and a deep knowledge of customer management and pharmaceutical regulations, I think I am just the candidate that you are looking for.

In my current position with [Current company], I’ve been able to demonstrate my skills in building great customer relationships, processing insurance payments improving order completion times as well as my keen attention to detail. I was also able to assist the business in its growth goals and ensure the highest standards of data protection.

My most significant achievement whilst working with [Current company] was to build a successful social media campaign that led to a 12.5% increase in clients. The campaign and other outreach campaigns I managed also led to an increase in customer retention over 6 months.

It would be my pleasure to discuss my experience in more detail in person. I am available to contact via phone and telephone and would be eager to explain how I can bring similar successes to [Company].

Thank you for considering my application and I look forward to hearing from you in the future.

To become a pharmacy technician, you need a well-written cover letter that showcases your best professional qualifications .

In this guide, we will provide you with 5 key tips for writing a pharmacy technician cover letter to land your ideal job. Keep reading to learn how to:

  • Tailor your pharmacy technician cover letter for a specific job
  • Write an effective & eye-catching pharmacy technician introduction
  • Describe your best skills & accomplishments as a pharmacy technician
  • Finish your pharmacy technician cover letter with a strong conclusion

1. Craft your pharmacy technician cover letter header & headline

The first step to writing an excellent cover letter as a pharmacy technician is to craft your header and headline. First up is your cover letter header , which contains crucial information such as:

  • Your name and professional title
  • Your professional contact information
  • The name of the pharmacy you are applying to
  • The address of the pharmacy

As you create this header, use larger and bolded fonts to make your name stand out . This is the first information an employer will see, so you want your personal information to be memorable.

Here is an example of a well-formatted pharmacy technician header

Jack King , Pharmacy Technician

(123) 456-7890 | [email protected] | linkedin.com/in/jack-king

To: Neighborhood Pharmacy Pharmacy Technician Department 1234 Street Address Seattle, WA 98101

Once you have created your header, the next step is to write a compelling cover letter headline . While headlines are optional, these title statements can help hook an employer’s attention and make your letter more captivating overall.

A strong cover letter headline will include a keyword related to the position, an eye-catching number or trigger word , a powerful adjective or verb, and a promise statement that informs the employer the letter is tailored specifically for their company.

Here is an example of a well-written pharmacy technician headline, followed by a brief breakdown of its key parts

2. Tailor your pharmacy technician cover letter for a specific job

Whenever you write a cover letter as a pharmacy technician, it is important to tailor the content of your letter to the specific job you are applying to. This shows the employer that you have put extra effort into your cover letter and have taken the time to research their company beforehand .

As you research a company to begin this tailoring process, look for information such as:

  • What language and keywords the company uses in their job descriptions, company mission, and marketing materials. This information can be used to adjust your writing style to be more in line with the employer’s.
  • Key skills and responsibilities the company lists in their job descriptions. These skills are the ones you should focus on describing in your own cover letter.
  • The person at the company who will review your cover letter. Use this detail to create a personalized greeting that addresses a specific person by name.

Here are 3 examples of personalized cover letter greetings

  • Dear Mr. Mark Franks,

Dear Head Pharmacist Mark Franks,

3. Write an effective & eye-catching pharmacy technician introduction

After you have completed your header and headline – and have researched the company you are applying to – it’s time to begin writing the content of your letter.

The first paragraph is your introduction, where you will provide:

  • A brief overview of your professional history (years of experience, specializations, etc.)
  • A statement on why you are enthusiastic about applying to this company
  • A mutual acquaintance (when possible) – including a mutual acquaintance can be incredibly useful, as it gives the employer an immediate and trustworthy professional reference.

Pro Tip: To expand your professional network – and gain a mutual acquaintance you can name in a cover letter – use a professional platform like LinkedIn to connect with other people in the pharmacy industry.

Here is an example of an effective introduction from a pharmacy technician's cover letter

I am a pharmacy technician with 5+ years of experience working in inventory management and pharmacy data input. Recently, I connected with one of your current pharmacy techs, Ms. Jane Doe, on LinkedIn to ask about your current openings. After learning of your pharmacy’s high level of commitment to both patient education and satisfaction, I decided your pharmacy’s values align perfectly with my own.

4. Describe your best skills & accomplishments as a pharmacy technician

Next on your writing to-do list are the body paragraphs . A good pharmacy technician cover letter will contain between 2 to 4 body paragraphs that describe your relevant skills and accomplishments.

As you describe these qualifications, make sure to include key details such as:

  • Context: Always provide context around your skills and qualifications, such as including the responsibilities of a previous role you held.
  • Quantifiable Information: When possible, offer the employer quantifiable and verifiable facts concerning your accomplishments, like public data or statistics.
  • Specificity: For your skills, be as specific as possible when describing each one. For example, don’t just say you have communication skills, explain your communication style and how you apply it in the workplace.

Here are 6 pharmacy technician skills to describe in a cover letter

  • Prescription order screening
  • Pharmacy inventory management
  • Proper medication storage procedures
  • Electronic file and record management
  • Investigational drug studies
  • Preparing prescriptions for pick-up

Here is an example of how to describe an accomplishment in a pharmacy technician cover letter

As a pharmacy technician at [Former Employer], I oversaw the pharmacy’s inventory management and storage procedures. By implementing a new daily inventory process, I reduced wasted and expired medications by more than 20%.

5. Finish your pharmacy technician cover letter with a strong conclusion

Our final tip for writing a pharmacy technician cover letter is to end with a strong conclusion .

Your closing statement serves a key purpose besides wishing the employer well – it should encourage the employer to contact you promptly. To do so, this closing statement should include:

  • When and how you can be contacted
  • When you intend to follow up
  • A formal sign-off

Here is an example of a strong conclusion from a pharmacy technician’s cover letter

As the newest member of your pharmacy team, I will be committed to efficiency and customer satisfaction. I am eager to learn more about this opportunity and hope to hear from you by next Friday. If I have not, I will reach back out at that time to follow up. The best way to reach me is at (123) 456-7890 between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

My work experience includes ten years as a retail pharmacy technician and five years operating as a tech in a hospital setting. Highlights of my expertise include:

Show how you work well with others

Pharmacy technicians must be able to work well in a team environment. To show that you’re the right fit for the job, talk about your experience working on pharmacy teams/teams of other types, highlighting why it’s important to have team members who are willing to help each other out. You can also talk about your past experiences working as part of a “team” in general, especially if they align with things like empathy or communication skills.

Show How You Will Make A Difference

Note how your past experiences and skills will make you a valuable asset to the organization. Use previous work-related examples that highlight your ability to excel in this position. If you don’t have any experience, then use non-work related examples that still showcase your skill set and drive for success.

Use Keywords

When applying for a job as a pharmacy technician, use the keywords listed in the job description to your advantage. If possible, try to relate each of these keywords to an experience you have had at work or school that proves you are qualified for the position. By doing this, it shows that not only do you have what it takes to do well in this role but also that you’ve done your research about the company and understand what they’re looking for in an ideal candidate.

Proofread your cover letter

Pharmacy technicians should have strong attention to detail and a keen understanding of pharmacy practices. Errors in your cover letter will suggest you lack the ability to accurately calculate medication dosages, ensure that patient needs are met, and keep a professional demeanor with patients. As such, proofreading your cover letter is crucial for success as a pharmacy technician.

  • Knowledge of medication and its effects: Important for answering queries, identifying potential drug interactions, and aiding the pharmacist in providing proper medication guidance.
  • Ability to work under pressure: Pharmacy technicians often work in fast-paced environments and must maintain accuracy and composure.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential: Certification demonstrates a recognized standard of knowledge and commitment to the field.

How to start your pharmacy technician cover letter: with a greeting, of course

Have you ever considered just how powerful a personalized salutation can be?

We sure have news for you! Your pharmacy technician cover letter should start with the right salutation to recruiters, nurturing a sense of respect and individuality.

Greet recruiters by using their first name (e.g. "Dear Tom" or "Dear Patricia") if you've previously established contact with them.

Otherwise, opt out for the less familiar, "Dear Ms. Peaches" or "Dear Ms Kelsey", if you've found the recruiter's name on LinkedIn or a corporate website.

"To whom it may concern" is never a good option, as it creates a sense that you've been sending out your pharmacy technician cover letter to anyone. Instead, use "Dear HR team" or "Dear (company name) recruiter" for a feeling of exclusivity.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Name of the Pharmacy Manager or Supervisor],
  • Dear Dr. [Last Name],
  • Dear [Pharmacy Department Name] Team,
  • Dear Human Resources Director,
  • Dear [Name of the Recruiter],

The pharmacy technician cover letter intro: aligning your interest with the company culture

You only have one chance at making a memorable first impression on recruiters with your pharmacy technician cover letter.

Structure your introduction to be precise and to include no more than two sentences.

Here are some ideas on how to write a job-winning pharmacy technician cover letter introduction:

  • get creative - show off your personality from the get-go (if this aligns with the company culture);
  • focus on your motivation - be specific when you say what gets you excited about this opportunity.

Structuring your pharmacy technician cover letter body to add more value

You've hinted at your value as a professional (this may be your passion for the job or interest in the company) in your introduction.

Next, it's time to pan out the body or middle of your pharmacy technician cover letter .

When creating your resume, you've probably gone over the advert a million times to select the most relevant skills.

Well, it's time to repeat this activity. Or just copy and paste your previous list of job-crucial requirements.

Then, select one of your past accomplishments, which is relevant and would impress hiring managers.

Write between three and six paragraphs to focus on the value your professional achievement would bring to your potential, new organization.

Tell a story around your success that ultimately shows off your real value as a professional.

Final words: writing your pharmacy technician cover letter closing paragraph

The final paragraph of your pharmacy technician cover letter allows you that one final chance to make a great first impression .

Instead of going straight to the "sincerely yours" ending, you can back up your skills with a promise of:

  • how you see yourself growing into the role;
  • the unique skills you'd bring to the organization.

Whatever you choose, always be specific (and remember to uphold your promise, once you land the role).

If this option doesn't seem that appealing to you, close off your pharmacy technician cover letter with a follow-up request.

You could even provide your availability for interviews so that the recruiters would be able to easily arrange your first meeting.

Addressing limited to no experience in the pharmacy technician cover letter

There's nothing to worry about if you lack professional experience .

Your pharmacy technician cover letter could bridge the gaps in your professional history by focusing on what matters most to recruiters, that's either:

  • skills - focusing on transferable ones you've gained, thanks to your life experience (e.g. volunteering, certificates, etc.);
  • achievements - select the most relevant and noteworthy one from your history (e.g. education, projects, etc.);
  • motivation - describe how you envision your professional growth in the next up to five years, thanks to this opportunity.

Key takeaways

Winning at your job application game starts with a clear and concise pharmacy technician cover letter that:

  • Has single-spaced paragraphs, is wrapped in a one-inch margin, and uses the same font as the pharmacy technician resume;
  • Is personalized to the recruiter (using their name in the greeting) and the role (focusing on your one key achievement that answers job requirements);
  • Includes an introduction that helps you stand out and show what value you'd bring to the company;
  • Substitutes your lack of experience with an outside-of-work success, that has taught you valuable skills;
  • Ends with a call for follow-up or hints at how you'd improve the organization, team, or role.

Immediately highlight your relevant qualifications or experiences that make you a strong candidate for the role. For instance, you could mention your certification, years of experience, or a key achievement in a previous role. This will grab the reader's attention and make them interested in learning more about you. Remember, the opening of your cover letter should be compelling and make the hiring manager want to continue reading.

Pharmacy Techs should end a cover letter by summarizing their interest in the position and their qualifications. They should express enthusiasm for the opportunity to contribute to the pharmacy team and provide excellent patient care. It's important to thank the reader for their time and consideration, and express a desire for further discussion. For example: "In conclusion, I am excited about the opportunity to bring my skills and dedication to your pharmacy team. I am confident that my experience and passion for patient care make me a strong candidate for this position. Thank you for considering my application. Here's a step-by-step guide: 1. Contact Information: Start with your name, address, phone number, and email address at the top of the page. If you're sending the cover letter via email, this information can be included in your email signature. 2. Salutation: Address the hiring manager by name if possible. If you can't find the name, use a general greeting like "Dear Hiring Manager." 3. Introduction: Begin by stating the position you're applying for. Express your enthusiasm about the opportunity. If someone referred you, mention their name and connection to the company. 4. Body: This is where you'll highlight your transferable skills and relevant experiences. Even if you don't have direct experience as a Pharmacy Tech, you may have skills from other jobs, internships, or coursework that are relevant. For example, if you've worked in customer service, you can highlight your communication skills and ability to handle difficult situations. If you've taken relevant coursework, discuss what you've learned and how it applies to the job. 5. Show Enthusiasm: Express your interest in the pharmacy field. Perhaps you have a personal story that inspired you to pursue this career. Showing your passion can help make up for lack of experience. 6. Conclusion: Reiterate your interest in the position and the company. Thank the hiring manager for considering your application. 7. Closing: End with a professional closing like "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your name. 8. Postscript: A P.S. can be a powerful way to include an additional piece of information that makes you stand out, whether it's a relevant certification, a notable achievement, or a reaffirmation of your passion for the field. Remember, the goal of the cover letter is to show the hiring manager why you would be a good fit for the position, even without direct experience. • Don’t be shy about  showcasing your skills on your resume !

Entry-Level Pharmacy Technician Resume

Entry-level pharmacy technician resume example

  • We suggest using this section to briefly discuss your education, accomplishments, and any internships or externships.
  • Use energetic “call to action” statements and tell the hiring manager “why” you want to be a pharmacy technician for their company.
  • Even seemingly unrelated roles can be listed on your entry-level pharmacy technician resume if you use them to demonstrate your customer service accomplishments.
  • A knack for customer service is one of many  resume skills  that naturally transfer to a pharm tech career.

Pharmacy Technician No Experience Resume

Pharmacy technician resume example with no experience as a technician

  • Emphasize your excellent customer service, problem-solving skills, and understanding of medication processes in your pharmacy technician no experience resume.

Pharmacy Technician Trainee Resume

Pharmacy technician trainee resume example with pharmacy sales experience

  • These experiences don’t need to be catered to being a technician either. Mentioning your role as a pharmacy cashier or aide will help the employer know that you’re well-versed with medications and providing accurate consultations. You can also add any relevant skill or tool you’ve got a good hang of in your pharmacy technician trainee resume.

Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Resume

Inpatient pharmacy technician resume example with 5 years of experience

  • But you don’t need to stop just here. Upgrade your inpatient pharmacy technician resume by including credible certifications like “Registered Pharmacy Technician” to further prove that you’ve trained under professionals.

CVS Pharmacy Technician Resume

Long-Term Care Pharmacy Technician Resume

  • Prove you’re worth an interview by emphasizing your versatility and impact with metrics.
  • For example, use percentages and numbers to show how often you provided patient support outside of the pharmacy, how many patient care plans you managed, and the number of activities you participated in with patients.
  • We like the reverse-chronological  resume format , as it lists your most recent (and likely relevant) work history first, with older experience following.
  • If you’re worried about formatting everything just right, try one of our  free Google docs resume templates  or  Word resume templates  for a professional look without all the stress.

Hospital Pharmacy Technician Resume

pharmacy tech cover letter

  • A worthwhile objective can be tailored to the specific role you’re seeking by sprinkling in relevant keywords from the  job description .
  • It should also present your very best self in two to three power-packed sentences.
  • Don’t forget to mention the target business by name, as this shows the employer that you’ve  crafted your resume  with their company in mind instead of cranking out mass copies into the cyber abyss!
  • We suggest wrapping all your great content in a beautiful  resume template  with a modest splash of color, but if you’re unsure and need inspiration, we’ve got tons of  free resume examples  to that effect.

Pharmacy Technician II Resume

Pharmacy technician ii resume example with 9 years of experience

  • There are two reasons for this. First, it helps Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) determine if you’re a good fit for the job. Second, it gives hiring managers quick insight into whether you might be a contender. Read the  job description  extra carefully to determine which of your skills are most suited to the particular job, and emphasize them on your resume. But don’t plagiarize. The person reading your resume likely wrote the job post, and let’s just say that wouldn’t make a good first impression.
  • It might not seem like an important section, but it’s almost as valuable as the work experience you list.
  • Ensure the skills you list aren’t arbitrary. For example, it wouldn’t be particularly useful for the hiring manager to know that you’re a talented needle felter when they’re really looking for someone who can offer compassionate, patient-centered care.

Certified Pharmacy Technician Resume

Certified pharmacy technician resume resume example with 5 years of experience

  • Try including some relevant projects. These could be many things, really. Are you a chair member of a club? Do you run a YouTube channel? Maybe one of your school projects was relevant?
  • No project experience? That’s okay, too! You can even include  hobbies and interests on your resume , but just be aware that the hiring manager is likely to ask you about these in an interview. So, if you’re an avid rock collector, be forewarned. It might take more than a second to figure out how rock collecting makes you a better pharmacy tech, so ask yourself these questions now rather than waiting for an interviewer to catch you unprepared.

Job seeker works on blue laptop, holding hand to head in question of how to build job application

A pharmacy technician handles filling prescriptions and checking the inventory. Techs give medicine to patients, whether over-the-counter or with a prescription. They also accumulate prescriptions and deliver information to patients and other healthcare professionals.

Most pharmacy techs work in the public sector and hospital pharmacies. They can also work in the sales department in the pharmaceutical industry. As a technician, you can also work in prisons, schools, and the military sectors.

When looking for a job, highlight your skills and experience with a well-formatted resume to help employers select you as the best fit. We’ll walk through four tips for your pharmacy tech resume, covering your skills, resume format, job experience impact, and resume customization .

pharmacy tech cover letter

Highlight your pharmacy technician skills

When a company advertises a job vacancy, many applications prevent that company from carefully looking through each one. So, companies use applicant tracking system software that screens through resumes to weed out candidates.

Unfortunately, if you’re a highly-qualified candidate but fail to include the right keywords in your resume, you’ll miss out on the job simply because the robots dumped you in the circular file . You must create a resume so the ATS finds you an ideal candidate for the job. Pass the ATS; then your resume will actually make it to human eyes.

Employers look at resumes and applications before scheduling interviews. Your pharmacy technician resume should highlight your abilities before you meet an employer for your interview. If those capabilities aren’t readily seen throughout your skills section and job experience bullet points, chances of interviewing are slim to none.

The resume skills section is crucial. The ATS is set to screen the skills required for the job. Knowing what you should include in your skills section is a matter of reading through the job description ad to determine what an employer is particularly seeking.

This pharmacy tech job candidate took the time to read through the skills listed in the job description:

Pharmacy technician skills on resume example

You’ll see in the example above that there are both hard and soft skills. As a pharmacy tech, include more hard than soft skills. Hard skills are fundamental to your tech work and are the qualifications needed for your job. On the other hand, soft skills are more general abilities beneficial to do your job well, such as customer service or verbal communication.

While this isn’t an exhaustive list, pharmacies are looking for these sorts of hard skills:

  • Insurance coverage
  • Compounding
  • Narcotic inventories
  • Third-party billing
  • Coordinating prior authorizations
  • Patient confidentiality & HIPAA
  • Extensive knowledge of generic and brand-name drugs
  • Prescription filling & labeling

Soft skills can be important, especially as pharmacy techs must collaborate with medical teams and the public. Soft skills could include:

  • Attention to detail
  • Interpersonal communication
  • Compassionate & empathetic
  • Time management

pharmacy tech cover letter

Format your pharmacy technician resume properly

When writing your resume , ensure your resume has the proper format. A suitable layout highlights the key areas of your resume and attracts the hiring manager to read through your resume. A good resume format presents the essentials upfront to entice the hiring manager.

Use the reverse-chronological format, which helps both the ATS and employers read your resume. Listing your experience in reverse-chronological order keeps the most current, relevant information in the top third of your resume, where the employer’s eyes will be drawn first.

Beyond this, we think you’ll find the following formatting tips helpful when it comes to beating the ATS and attracting the attention of an employer:

  • Margins: Aim for half to one-inch margins all around.
  • Length: Keep your pharmacy tech resume on an exact page. Less than a page looks like you don’t care, but going over a page looks messy and incomplete.
  • Bullet points: Use bullet points in places like your work experience to break the text into easy-to-read chunks.
  • Icons/images: Avoid them like the plague. The ATS gets quite befuddled when you use something besides the basic, round bullet point.
  • Customization: We’ll talk more about this later, but the point is that your resume shouldn’t be generic or able to be passed off to any employer. Customize your skills, work experience, and career summary or objective (if you include one).

pharmacy tech cover letter

Writing a pharmacy tech resume objective or summary

Before we go further, let’s unpack that resume objective and resume summary issue. Both are short paragraphs of two to three sentences each; while they’re similar, some differences are worth noting.

An objective should be specific about the position and the type of job you want. Its purpose is to identify the career you seek and how you can add value to the company. Consider an objective if transitioning to pharmacy tech work from another field. You might also use an objective if you’re an entry-level worker.

A summary highlights your qualifications for the job based on your combined (10+ years for a summary) experience. It gives the hiring managers a quick synopsis of your history and underscores your strengths and skills. Like the objective, a summary should be tailored to your desired role.

While specific, customized objectives and summaries are effective, this section won’t do you a bit of good if you slap something together willy-nilly. If you lack the time or energy to do it right, skip it.

In the following objective and summary samples, note that the job seeker demonstrates:

  • Clear and valuable personal qualities
  • Quantitative information
  • Top skills and capabilities
  • Interest in a specific company and role

Objective Example

Offering expertise in dedicated patient support, customer service excellence, and extensive pharmacology knowledge to provide efficient processes and inventory management while never compromising patient confidentiality or safety. Motivated to lead a team of pharmacy technicians and apprentices at CVS Health.

Give data and stats to show your impact as a pharmacy tech

When checking your resume , it’s crucial to set yourself apart from the competition. As a pharmacy technician, you’re responsible for more than just filling prescriptions. Do your best to show action and achievement when discussing your experience. Remember, it should be relevant and tailored to the specific responsibilities listed in the job description ad.

One of the best ways you can demonstrate your impact at previous jobs is by sharing data and stats. Metrics put weight behind your words. While words are easy enough to dismiss, numbers provide credibility and make employers pay attention. Knowing what you should quantify isn’t always easy, but think about the following:

  • Speed and accuracy: Your work as a pharmacy tech requires you to be quick; however, it can be detrimental to you, the company, and your customers if you sacrifice quality. Can you demonstrate your ability to work quickly, effectively, and efficiently through numbers?
  • Customer retention: As we said earlier, your job is more than filling prescriptions. Customer service is a large part of what you do, and if customers are dwindling, the company is relying on you to rebuild trust and retain those customers. Perhaps you can showcase your ability to win customers and keep them long-term.
  • Output: Depending on the size of the pharmacies you’ve worked for in the past, how much you fulfill in one day will differ. Discussing this with an estimated number of customers assisted per day or orders fulfilled may be relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Can you find the above three quantifiers in the job description bullet points below?

Tailor your resume for each pharmacy tech job

We’ve hinted at this and can’t stress it enough. Every pharmacy has different roles and responsibilities, and the best way to get shortlisted for an interview is to tailor your resume for every job application. Customizing your resume to fit the job description helps prove you’re the right candidate.

Tailoring your resume doesn’t mean having to recreate it every time. Instead, it involves replacing and adding details according to the job’s roles. Career experts recommend adjusting a few sections to suit the job description.

If you include a summary or objective statement , specifically discuss the most important skills and the company itself. Your skills section should also reflect the skills prioritized in the job description. Lastly, if the job ad states that the pharmacy needs someone to manage the inventory or lead a tech team, consider how you might demonstrate similar experience in your work history section .

Let’s explore how to adjust several pharmacy tech resumes to the role you want:

Pharmacy technician resume

  • If you do include one, remember the tips we discussed earlier.
  • Pay attention to state laws and requirements. List your certification on your resume because this will be a deal breaker for many employers if you forget to include it.

Hospital pharmacy technician resume

  • Use your job experience bullet points to discuss medication distribution to the appropriate floors or units, surveillance for drug misuse, and assisting patients with inquiries and problems.

Entry-level pharmacy technician resume

  • In your experience section, include past jobs, such as retail, restaurant service, administrative work, childcare, etc.
  • If you have no work experience, you can emphasize any education beyond high school and certificates you’ve earned that qualify you to be a pharmacy tech.
  • Additionally, you may also include resume-relevant interests, hobbies , and projects.

Long-term care pharmacy technician resume

  • Your resume should highlight your knowledge of planning, implementing, and evaluating plans and your ability to communicate and collaborate with the nursing staff.
  • You’ll also want to demonstrate that you’re a pro when treating elderly and ill patients with compassion, empathy, and dignity.

Registered pharmacy technician resume

  • Your resume must state that you’re a registered pharmacy technician. For a role specifically titled this, include “Registered Pharmacy Technician” in the job title.
  • Include a license/certification section in the sidebar or bottom of your resume where you can list your state certification.
  •  The ATS software weeds out unregistered candidates from the many applications.
