Free and Open Source Software has not only increased researchers’ interest about community-driven software development, but lately, interest from commercial actors increased as well. In addition, some scientists have claimed that Open Source Software has entered a new phase: OSS 2.0. Even so, a coherent way of analyzing commercial Open Source ventures is still missing.

Commercial Open Source firms’ strategies are often described using the term “business models”. However, these models often lack stringent structures and have been used primarily to describe the firms’ offerings and methods to earn revenue.

Through the adaptation of an existing, firmly theoretically-based analytical business model framework, this thesis suggests a new analysis model for studying for-profit Open Source companies. In addition, the framework is generically constructed, ensuring its usability for other industries as well. The model consists of three elements: market positions, operational platform and offering .

This particular study concerned four software product vendors, all of which base their products on Open Source Software. When analyzing their business, insights were made about how these firms operated. The result show that there are certain key elements and factors that determine if a company has a sustainable business or not. From the analysis framework, three elements were refined. The main Open Source Software project connects the market positions and the operational platform; and from the offering, the product and service and the revenue model were very important.

The study identified eight key factors which influenced the elements: brand for the product, the company and the Open Source Software project; community , that is the sum of the non-paying users and developers connected to Open Source Software projects; resources , which are community-based resources such as development and testing; legitimacy, the perceived legitimacy regarding licenses and the revenue models; control, i.e. the control the firm has of the software; ability to charge , or how the company can charge for its services; customers , the paying users; and finally volume , which is the number of paying customers.

The findings also indicate that companies interested in working with the open-source community have to be able to balance the demands from both their customers and the community in order to benefit and gain competitive advantage.

As a management student looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing management theories – i.e., to add value and interest to your research topic.

The management field is vast and interrelated to many other academic disciplines like operations management , business , business administration , MBA , human resource management and more. That is why creating a management dissertation topic that is particular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field is imperative.

There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, there is a possibility that the study is not viable.

This impacts your time and efforts in writing your dissertation , as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

Keeping our advice in mind while developing a research topic will allow you to pick one of the best management dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and adds to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please look at some of our sample management dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

─ There is a general acceptance that Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) are a primary source of value and have taken a center stage in the definition, operation and performance of most business organisations. However, their use within the manufacturing sector in developing countries remains inconsistent. This article investigated the role of KMS in enhancing the export performance of firms operating within the manufacturing sector in Zimbabwe. The study used a quantitative approach in which a survey questionnaire was distributed to 555 managers drawn from 185 manufacturing firms based in Harare. Data analyses involved the use of descriptive statistics, Spearman correlations and regression analysis. The results of the study showed that combined IT/social driven KMS exerted the greatest impact on export performance. The availability of both information technology centered and social centered KMS influences export performance by improving the firm's export strategy, export commitment, export orientation, export growth, export sales, export profits and export market share.

An interview study spanning 222 informants in 38 countries was launched to collect data on KM expert views concerning the future research needs of the KM field. The value contribution of KM requires more research despite experts agreeing on the complexities involved in solving this challenge. Further research areas identified were related to the influence of KM to support business strategy, intellectual capital, decision-making, knowledge sharing, organizational learning, innovation performance, productivity and competitive advantage. What is Strategic Management? How Does it Ensure Business Success?

Published: April 19, 2024

dissertation of strategic management

To get ahead, corporations are emphasizing strategic management skills as they hire for leadership positions. Whether you are focused on finance, marketing, research and development, or operations, chances are good that you will be called upon to strategically manage projects or processes.

In this article, we’ll take a detailed look at strategic management, including the steps in the process, the benefits and pitfalls, and how you can become a strategy manager.

three strategic managers exchanging ideas with each other

What is Strategic Management?

Strategic management is a comprehensive process that aligns a company’s strategic direction with its operational activities, ensuring it can navigate competitive markets successfully and achieve long-term success.

The main purpose of strategic management is to guide an organization in meeting its goals and objectives through the efficient use of resources. The process includes the continuous planning, monitoring, analysis, and assessment of an organization’s resources and capabilities. As changes or challenges arise – both internally and externally – a strategic manager will implement solutions to effectively adapt business activities. More simply put, strategic management ensures that all employees within a company are focused on the same goals.

Strategic management theory is the process an organization uses to accomplish strategic management and typically involves five steps: goal setting, analysis, strategy formation, strategy implementation, and strategy monitoring.

Goal Setting

It involves establishing clear objectives for the organization, including defining its vision, mission, and overall strategic goals.

It involves gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data about the organization’s internal strengths and weaknesses as well as external opportunities and threats. This phase often results in a SWOT analysis.

Strategy Formation

It involves developing strategic options based on the results of the analysis phase, and then selecting the most appropriate strategies to pursue.

Strategy Implementation

It involves executing the chosen strategies by allocating resources, developing programs, and making necessary adjustments.

Strategy Monitoring

It involves continuously evaluating and controlling the strategic process to ensure the organization remains on track toward its goals, adjusting as needed based on performance and environmental changes.

Applying Strategic Management

Although strategic management should always be used to guide operations, it can be particularly useful during key moments, including periods of significant growth, market change, and future planning. By keeping long-range success in the foreground, strategic management can ensure employees focus on areas most likely to achieve management’s desired outcomes.

The benefits of strategic management are numerous and can significantly impact an organization’s success. They include:

Improved Decision Making

Strategic management provides a framework for making informed decisions by evaluating the internal and external environments of the organization.

Increased Efficiency

By aligning resources with strategic objectives, organizations can operate more efficiently.

Better Coordination Between Departments

Strategic management ensures that all departments work towards common goals, enhancing coordination and reducing conflict.

Financial Benefits

Strategic management leads to improved financial health via liquidity monitoring, revenue generation, profitability management, and solvency planning.

Setting a Clear Direction

By setting a clear direction for the future, strategic management ensures that employees and management are aligned toward achieving the organization’s goals.

Competitive Advantage

Strategic management is crucial for maintaining and achieving a competitive advantage in the market.

As you can see, strategic management is not just about planning; it’s also about adapting to changes, making informed decisions, and ensuring that an organization remains relevant and competitive in a rapidly changing environment.

What Skills are Important for Strategic Management?

Strategic management is a multifaceted discipline that requires a range of skills from leaders and managers. Central is the ability to negotiate, find common ground, and achieve buy-in across diverse stakeholder groups. These skills are essential for unifying different viewpoints and agendas to move the company forward.

Effective delegation is also a cornerstone of strategic management, allowing for the efficient distribution of tasks. In addition, communication skills play a pivotal role. Leaders should be able to impart information clearly and use active listening skills, both key traits of emotional intelligence . The goal is to inspire confidence within your team and among stakeholders.

Finally, strategic management is underpinned by the ability to think strategically. Leaders with critical thinking and problem-solving skills are better able to anticipate future trends, recognize potential issues and opportunities, and craft appropriate solutions.

Together, these skills facilitate the development and implementation of strategic goals, ensuring organizations are well-positioned to navigate complex environments and achieve sustainable success.

How to Become a Strategic Manager?

To become a strategic manager, a solid educational background is typically required. Typically, strategic management roles require at least a bachelor’s degree in a field of study like business administration, finance, economics, or a similar discipline.

Moreover, some positions may look for candidates with more advanced degrees, like a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) or related areas. This advanced education can provide deeper insights into business strategies, leadership, and organizational management.

UoPeople offers a variety of educational options for aspiring strategic leaders. Both the Associate and Bachelor degrees in business administration focus on the core competencies of leadership, while our Master’s of Business Administration is well-known to help advance your career .

UoPeople’s tuition-free model allows us to offer students an affordable solution to earning a quality business degree. In addition, our classes are all taught online and are asynchronous, making us perfect for adult students balancing career and family lives along with academic goals. UoPeople courses can be completed on your own schedule and in a matter of months.

If you don’t want to undertake a degree program, UoPeople also offers convenient certificate programs that are perfect for adult workers looking to upskill. In particular, our Certificate in Strategy gives students a solid foundation in strategic business methods, business management, accounting, marketing, and economic theory in as little as four months.

Furthermore, combining a bachelor’s or master’s degree with several years of practical experience in business or strategy roles can significantly enhance a candidate’s qualifications for becoming a strategy manager.

Also useful are less formal leadership training programs, workshops, seminars, and conferences that focus on key competencies like strategic thinking, communication, and change management. Additionally, finding a mentor within your company can also be beneficial, especially for someone working in a strategic management role. By working closely with your mentor, you can learn what techniques are the most successful within your business environment.

Strategic management is critical to the operation and profitability of any organization. Because it is so integral to long-term financial success, many corporations are now prioritizing strategic management skills when they are making hiring decisions. For this reason, upskilling in strategic management is currently one of the most popular paths to career advancement.

To deliver on their goals, companies use strategic management continuously. Therefore, there will always be opportunities for strategic managers in the workforce. By keeping a keen eye on how a company’s operations are aligned with its goals, strategic managers can guide their companies to success.

6 Common Leadership Styles — and How to Decide Which to Use When

  • Rebecca Knight

dissertation of strategic management

Being a great leader means recognizing that different circumstances call for different approaches.

Research suggests that the most effective leaders adapt their style to different circumstances — be it a change in setting, a shift in organizational dynamics, or a turn in the business cycle. But what if you feel like you’re not equipped to take on a new and different leadership style — let alone more than one? In this article, the author outlines the six leadership styles Daniel Goleman first introduced in his 2000 HBR article, “Leadership That Gets Results,” and explains when to use each one. The good news is that personality is not destiny. Even if you’re naturally introverted or you tend to be driven by data and analysis rather than emotion, you can still learn how to adapt different leadership styles to organize, motivate, and direct your team.

Much has been written about common leadership styles and how to identify the right style for you, whether it’s transactional or transformational, bureaucratic or laissez-faire. But according to Daniel Goleman, a psychologist best known for his work on emotional intelligence, “Being a great leader means recognizing that different circumstances may call for different approaches.”

The Department of Defense Releases the Updated Strategic Management Plan for Fiscal Years 2022 - 2026

Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen H. Hicks has approved the updated Fiscal Years 2022 – 2026 DoD Strategic Management Plan.

The SMP serves as the Department of Defense's strategic framework to manage strategic priorities and goals in support of the 2022 National Defense Strategy. It focuses on building enduring advantages and addressing institutional management priorities by using data-analytics to enhance oversight and reform efforts. Additionally, the SMP meets the statutory requirements pursuant the Government Performance and Results Act Modernization Act of 2010 and is published every year with the objective of articulating near-term progress on SMP implementation along with the long-term objectives the department plans to accomplish.

The SMP preparation is led by the department's Performance Improvement Officer and is developed through collaborative coordinated partnerships with the DOD components. The published SMP is reviewed as part of the annual fiscal budget process to ensure it remains aligned with achieving the strategic goals of the President's budget, the NDS, and the Secretary of Defense's priorities. For the first time, the FY2025 update to the SMP incorporates outcome-driven performance goals and measures for Military Departments to ensure that the SMP strategic framework accurately represents the work executed by the MILDEP in contribution to strategic priorities and objectives.

The SMP includes the Annual Performance Plan and Annual Performance Report. The FY2025 APP reflects the SMP's longer-term planning outlook by linking its strategic goals and objectives to operational performance goals, measures, and targets for the upcoming fiscal year. The FY2023 APR consolidates prior year performance results across all DOD components and communicates overall implementation progress against the SMP.

The SMP strategic priorities and objectives – together with the performance goals, measures, and targets – showcase how the department intends to achieve its goals and priorities and succeed through teamwork across the defense enterprise. The FY2025 SMP focuses on five strategic priorities:

  • Take Care of Our People and Cultivate the Workforce We Need
  • Transform the Foundation of the Future Force
  • Make the Right Technology Investments
  • Strengthen Resilience and Adaptability of Our Defense Ecosystem
  • Address Institutional Management Priorities

The full SMP is published online on the Performance Improvement Officer/Director of Administration and Management's performance website: https://dam.defense.gov/Performance-Mgmt/ .
