Earning a master’s in education online offers a convenient and flexible option for many students, but distance learning may not suit everything. Ask yourself the following questions before deciding whether to enroll in an online program.

  • What’s your budget? Public colleges usually charge higher tuition rates to students who live in other states, but out-of-state distance learners often pay in-state or discounted tuition rates at public institutions. As such, online programs can be more cost-effective for online learners. Distance students can also avoid high costs associated with on-campus housing and transportation.
  • How do you learn? Distance learning may work well for you if you have good time management, organization and self-motivation skills. If you thrive in a face-to-face classroom setting or prefer a more structured learning environment, an on-campus or hybrid program might be a better choice.
  • How will the program fit into your schedule? Online programs offer flexibility—especially those with asynchronous classes, which let learners complete coursework at any time. Distance learning might serve you if you work full time or otherwise need a flexible schedule.

Online and traditional colleges both use accreditation to demonstrate a high standard of education. The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the U.S. Department of Education approve accrediting agencies that offer institutional accreditation to schools.

Institutional accreditors evaluate universities to ensure they meet overall academic standards. It’s important to choose an institutionally accredited school, because you can’t get federal student aid otherwise. You may also struggle to transfer credits from an unaccredited institution, and employers might not recognize your degree.

Programmatic accreditation ensures the quality of specific academic programs or departments within universities. Depending on your industry, you may need a programmatically accredited degree to qualify for certain jobs, professional certifications or licenses, and graduate programs.

An online master’s in education may hold programmatic accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

You can look for accreditation information for schools and programs using CHEA’s searchable directories .

Consider Your Future Goals

An online master’s in education can help you enter or advance in the education field, but first you must find a program that aligns with your goals. To choose the right master’s in education online program, think about what you want to do after you graduate.

What type of career are you looking for? If your undergraduate degree is in a non-education field and you want to become a teacher, you will need to pursue licensure. Ensure the program you choose meets the teacher licensing requirements for the state where you plan to work. If you aim to work in a non-teaching role, you don’t need a licensure program and can focus on other criteria instead.

If you don’t yet have professional experience, an internship or practicum can help you build career-ready skills, so you might seek a master’s program with an experiential learning component. And if you plan to pursue a doctoral degree after earning your master’s in education, a research-based program can set you up for success.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Tuition for the online master’s in education programs on our list ranges from $488 to $1,079 per credit. With the typical master’s degree requiring 30 to 40 credits, this brings the estimated cost of a master’s in education between $14,640 and $43,160. Comparatively, the National Center for Education Statistics reports that tuition and fees for graduate school in the U.S. cost $19,749 per year on average, or nearly $40,000 for a two-year master’s degree.

You can fill out the FAFSA to see whether you qualify for federal student aid, including student loans, grants, work-study programs and scholarships. States and colleges also use FAFSA information to determine awards for their own aid programs.

What is the highest paying degree in education?

The highest-paying education degree is a doctor or education (Ed.D.). Payscale reports that graduates with an Ed.D. earn about $86,000 on average. In comparison, a master of education degree holder earns about $64,000 on average.

What is the difference between a master’s in teaching and a master’s in education?

These two degrees cover similar topics, and both can prepare you for a teaching career. However, a master’s in teaching is a more specialized degree that concentrates specifically on teaching strategies, classroom management and learning. A master’s in education is broader, encompassing the entire education field, including education policy, administration and curriculum development.

There is value in turning your continuing education requirements for graduate coursework completion into a full master’s degree.

Open the door to leadership opportunities

Advancing your studies in education can open the door to growth and leadership opportunities in the education field, allowing you to move into administration, director level, or content-area specialist. For many students, finding online schools that offer financial aid for them to pursue programs such as master’s in education programs is the best choice for their future. Online master’s in education programs equip current and aspiring teachers with new skills to become more effective in working with a diverse range of students and environments. It also enhances career opportunities and gives more flexibility. It opens doors to leadership roles, like mentor teacher or principal, curriculum or program development, and special instruction positions.

In some states, a master’s degree is necessary to maintain your teaching credential. Even if it’s not required in your state, pursuing a master’s can help you become a better teacher.

When pursuing a master’s degree, always be prepared for the financial investment you’ll make. According to the Education Data Initiative, MEd programs cost an average of $42,010. Some degrees, such as those from more prestigious universities like Columbia University, can cost up to $135,000.

Featured Programs

Teaching is often seen as an underrated and underpaid profession. In fact, many people enter this field not for the money but out of a passion for sharing knowledge. For example, the average starting salary for teachers is $44,530, which is lower than the average salary for other jobs.

Your love and passion shouldn’t cause you financial instability. Fortunately, many online Master’s in Education programs offer strong financial aid support to help ease the burden of tuition costs. The first step is a completed FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form.

The FAFSA helps you access scholarships, grants, work-study options, and low-interest loans. The FAFSA can greatly reduce your education costs—sometimes even to nothing!

Below we will list ten of the strongest online colleges with financial aid for students interested in a Master’s in Education as well as the importance of financial aid opportunities to make these degrees more affordable.

Applying for Financial Aid as an Education Student

Getting an advanced degree often comes at a high cost. If you can’t pay your tuition upfront, you’re not alone. A National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) study shows that over 84% of college students receive some form of financial aid from the FAFSA and private sources.

Fortunately, you can have access to various options to reduce out-of-pocket costs. The top most popular financial aid for teachers include:

Scholarships and Grants

These are considered to be the best option for assistance. Scholarships and grants are basically free money since you don’t need to repay them. There are thousands of grants and scholarships available for education majors!

The US Department of Labor offers a free scholarship search tool with over 8,000 options. Additionally, many schools provide their own scholarships and grants, so it’s wise to check with your school’s financial aid office. Here are a few tips on how to secure scholarships and grants for master’s in education degrees:

  • Start your search well in advance to identify all available options.
  • Customize your essays and applications to align with the goals and values of each scholarship or grant program.
  • Maintain strong academics.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities, volunteer work, or leadership roles.
  • Keep track of deadlines, required documents, and application statuses to avoid missing opportunities.

Many states offer financial aid specifically for residents. They often include grants, loans, and work-study options. Here are some easy steps to access state aid:

  • Check your state’s higher education agency for funding options.
  • Fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible to qualify for both federal and state aid.
  • Use online resources. Many states have online portals to help you find information on state aid.

Federal Loan Forgiveness

Loan forgiveness means that some or all of a borrower’s debt is canceled, so they no longer have to repay it. As an education professional, your chances of qualifying for loan forgiveness are high.

To qualify, you must make 120 on-time loan payments while employed. This requires ten years of consistent work and payments.

To apply, both you and your employer must complete the PSLF & Temporary Expanded PSLF Certification & Application. If you have FFEL Program loans or Perkins loans, convert them into a direct consolidation loan first. After that, submit the PSLF form to your loan servicer. It’s recommended that you resubmit your form annually or whenever you change jobs.

Loans are always available, but it’s important not to rely only on those. You need to exhaust all possible free aid to relieve current financial burdens without compromising the return on investment of your degree.
