Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910, in Albania. In 1950, in Calcutta, India, she acquired Indian citizenship and started the Missionaries of Charity. She led the Missionaries of Charity's growth while providing care for the sick, elderly, orphaned, and needy for more than 45 years. She later took the initiative to other parts of the world. Pope John Paul II declared Blessed Teresa of Calcutta when she passed away and had her beatified.

Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu (later called Mother Teresa) was the youngest child of Nikola and Drana Bojaxhiu's, who were from Shkodra, Albania. Her father passed away when she was eight years old, and her mother brought her up as a Roman Catholic. When Anjeze was 18 years old, she left home to become a missionary with the Sisters of Loreto.

She first established a school in Motijhil (Calcutta), but soon she began attending to the needs of the malnourished and poor. A group of young ladies joined her in her mission to start a new religious community that would benefit the "poorest of the poor" at the beginning of 1949.

Mother Teresa achieved international renown by the 1970s as a humanitarian and supporter of the weak and powerless. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, in 1980 for her humanitarian efforts. The Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa, kept growing, and at the time of her passing, they were running 610 missions across 123 nations. On her 100th birthday in 2010, she was honoured internationally, and Indian President Pratibha Patil lauded her contributions.

Mother Teresa has been criticised by various people and organisations, such as Christopher Hitchens, Michael Parenti, Aroup Chatterjee, and Vishva Hindu Parishad, against the proselytising focus of her work, which includes a vehement opposition to abortion and contraception, a belief in the spiritual goodness of poverty, and alleged baptisms of the dying.

While visiting Pope John Paul II in 1983, Mother Teresa experienced a heart attack in Rome. She was given a synthetic pacemaker in 1989 following a second attack. After battling pneumonia while in Mexico, she had new cardiac issues in 1991. She offered to step down as leader of the Missionaries of Charity. In contrast, she was approved to remain by the order's nuns in a secret vote. Mother Teresa agreed to carry on her duties as the order's leader.

She passed away on September 5, 1997.

Mother Teresa was an independent personality who believed in changing the world by following the path of God. She was born on 26th August 1910 in the city of Skopje (which the largest city of North Macedonia). The real name of Mother Teresa was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Mother Teresa belonged to Roman Catholic. Her family called her Gonxha, that means flower bud or little bud in Albanian. She had an elder brother whose name was Lazar and an elder sister with a name- Aga. Nikola Bojaxhiu was her father, who was a successful building contractor and also a merchant who travelled Europe all around.

Dranafile Bojaxhiu was her mother who worked as a traditional Albanian housewife who spent her life just cooking, cleaning, mending, and caring for her children and spouse. Her father took care of a local church along with city politics. When the Mother Teresa was just eight years old, his father died suddenly due to serve ill. Until today, the cause of his death is uncertain, but it is believed that his death was due to poison given by the political enemies.

After the death of her father, Mother Teresa became very close to her mother. Her mother insisted her to charity and helped others through his life. Even though they were not rich at that time, her mother still sent an open invitation to the people of her area to dine with her family. Her mother also taught her children that “No one will eat a single mouthful unless they share with others.” When Mother Teresa asked her mother that who were those people who came for dining, then she replied uniformly that “Some were our relatives. However, all were our people”.

Mother Teresa first studied in a convent-run primary school and then in a state-run secondary school. She always sang in the local Sacred Heart choir and often liked to sing solos. At the age of 12, she realized deeply about religious life when she attended a congregation organized in the Black Madonna church in Lettice. When she turned 18 years old, she decided to become a nun and decided to move to Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin. Once she reached there, she got the name Sister Mary Teresa after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

Then, Sister Mary Teresa (Mother Teresa) went to Darjeeling for the novitiate period. In the year 1931, Sister Mary Teresa made her first profession of vows. Then she called to Calcutta (Kolkata) to teach at Saint Mary’s High School for Girls. That school was run by the Loreto Sisters where only most impoverished Bengali families are invited to study. Since she was well aware of both Hindi and Bengali languages, she was assigned to teach history and geography. She explained them thoroughly; thereby, they can alleviate their poverty through education.

On 24th May 1937, Sister Mary adopted her final profession of vows to a life of chastity, obedience, and poverty. Since she was holding the tradition for Loreto nuns, she honoured with the title of ‘Mother’ once she took her final vows, hence, became called as Mother Teresa. During adopting the final profession of vows, she had been in her teaching profession at Saint Mary’s school. In the year 1944, Mother Teresa became the principal of the same school.

Through her infinite kindness and uninterrupted ambitions to her student’s education, she became able to adopt them the life of devotion to Christ. “Give me the strength to be ever the light of their lives, so that I may lead them at last to you” was the famous line wrote by her. On 5th September 1997, Mother Teresa was died at the age of 87 due to diseases like lung, heart, and kidney. There are numerous examples of people doing small changes every day and changing the lives of others gradually. If every individual has made their responsibility and capability clear, then the task of making the world a better place for everyone would not seem to be impossible. The purpose of this essay is to consider the life and contribution of the most inspiring women of all times, Mother Teresa.

Agnesë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, better known as Mother Teresa, was born in today’s capital of North Macedonia, Skopje, in August 1910. However, the date of birth of Mother Teresa is still an issue of a robust discussion. Her parents were of Albanian descent, even though, back in 1910, an Albanian state did not exist yet. It was part of the Ottoman Empire until 1912 when the Republic of Albania declared its independence. Although Mother Teresa was Albanian, she had not visited Albania until 1989 (Endresen 53). The reason for this was Albanian officials who refused to issue her a visa. Once the Communist regime fell, the problem solved itself. In her early years, Mother Teresa understood that her mission was to spread the love of Jesus Christ. When she was eighteen, she decided to join a Catholic congregation called “the Sisters of Loreto,” which sent missions to India. Having taken a mandatory training in Dublin, Mother Teresa went to India where she finally made her vows as a nun.

In Calcutta, Mother Teresa was teaching at the school from 1931 to 1948. During these years, she noticed that outside the walls of the convent, ordinary poor people were suffering a lot. This observation was an incentive that made Mother Teresa ask for permission from her congregation to devote herself to helping most marginalized people in Calcutta. First, she started an open-air school, but soon other people, who cared about vulnerable residents of Calcutta, joined her. In 1950, Mother Teresa founded her order called The Missionaries of Charity . Fifteen years after, the congregation received a decree of the Pope, which made the work of the order possible in other countries of the world. Overall, she was a well-respected person who committed herself to help less privileged people. She received such awards as the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian endeavors and contribution (Endresen 53).

Mother Teresa turned her entire life into a commitment to serve people and ease the sufferings of the most vulnerable ones. She saw the inequalities, but, compared to most people, she started to make her contribution to improving the lives of people living in misery all around the world. She is one of the few examples of human beings who sacrificed their lives for the common good. Mother Teresa was a person with a clear vision of how society should look like and what kind of experiences all people should be able to have. Her understanding of existing injustices was deep, profound, and non-hypocritical. From the early beginning of her independent activity, she made it clear for all the people working with her, that the conditions of living should be the same for both helpers and people in need of help.

Her vision was also clear in terms of differences between the societies in developed countries and developing ones. Mother Teresa was well aware of what problems were wide-spread in certain communities, so she kept her mind open to new issues and challenges. Her Charity was asked to come to help people in various corners of the world, so it can be argued with certainty that Mother Teresa was a citizen of the world, as she genuinely aspired to help people everywhere.

Due to her inspiring work, many women joined The Missionaries of Charity to serve the poorest of the poor. By the 1990s, there were established representations of the Charity in 123 countries of the world, including former Communist states such as Russia, Albania, etc. (Metaxas 112). She not only overcame the differences between wealthy societies of the Global North and South but also between two political blocks.

Mother Teresa also took up the initiatives on the issues neglected by others, even the government. For example, she opened a leaper asylum in Calcutta when there were more than 30 000 people afflicted with leprosy in Calcutta about whom nobody really cared. The government was not always on her side, so in the case of a leaper asylum, she was forced to evacuate all the patients. However, Mother Teresa wasn’t a person who would easily give up, she started a fundraising campaign, and when she accumulated enough resources, she founded a mobile leprosy clinic. Furthermore, Mother Teresa opened similar houses for people with HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. She traveled to conflict-torn areas to rescue children and move them from demolished hospitals.

Mother Teresa was a good leader who skillfully conveyed her ideas to the general public all around the world. Even though she held strong beliefs in Catholicism, as she was a Catholic nun, her view overcame the borders of one religion and appealed to very different people from distant places of the Earth. Charisma was Mother Teresa’s gift from God as she couldn’t but attracted the attention of media from the very start of her career. In 1968, Malcolm Muggeridge decided to interview Mother Teresa for the BBC (Metaxas). Thanks to this interview on BBC, Mother Teresa obtained world fame.

Despite all the praising words about Mother Teresa, she received a lot of criticism during and after her lifetime. For example, even though the Catholic church recognized Mother Teresa as a saint, not every Catholic agreed with the decision. Some people believe that she had not done enough for the church as she didn’t try to convert people (Donohue). There is also an idea that such famous examples as Mother Teresa may discourage ordinary people from making their contribution in any form of charity (Morin et al.). However, considering Mother Teresa’s Charity from a humanitarian point of view, one can argue that human interests and life matter more than the benefits of any particular religion.

The work of mother Teresa has been inspiring for people all around the world. She is a classic example of a person who devoted her life to helping people in need. Mother Teresa contributed to the elevation of many people’s miseries daily. However, her way of life is not free of criticism, as there are many aspects in her work which could have been improved. What is clear in spite of all these ambiguities surrounding Mother Teresa’s figure is that her example will continue living on and encouraging people of the world to do better for themselves and people around them.

Mother Teresa was a wonderful woman and a great influence on the world today. She was born in 1910 in Macedonia with the name Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. She was born into a family of deeply religious Catholics. Agnes felt she got the calli-kg to work for God at the young age of fourteen. She joined. the Loreto order and went to Bengal, India, to start her studies.

In 1937, Agnes took her final vows to become a nun and has done much great work in the world since. Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born on August 27, 1910 to Nikola and Drana Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia. Drama and Nikola were Albanian and both were very deeply religious Roman Catholics.

Nikola was a popular merchant and a partner to an Italian merchant. He owned several houses and was a member of the Skopje town council. Whenever Agnes’ father would return from a trip, he would always bring his children presents. Also, he promoted his daughters’ education, which was uncommon in that time period. Nikola also was involved in an underground organization, that worked to gain independence for the Albanians from the Ottoman Turks, who ruled Macedonia around the time Agnes was born. Agnes grew up around much fighting.

When she was born, there were Albanian protests against the Turkish government. When she was two, she witnessed the First Balkan War. In that war, the Ottomans were defeated, but Macedonia was divided among the conquerors: Bulgaria, Greece, Mon reneger°, and Serbia.

At age eighteen, Agnes joined the Loreto order of nuns. In September of 1928, she left her family and everything she knew to serve God at the Loreto Abbey in Dublin Ireland. There, she learned how to speak English. In November, she went to India to teach English in an Indian school.

In 1929, Agnes starred her novitiate in an Abbey in Darjeeling and an abbey in the foothills of the Himalayas. A novitiate is the time a nun spends studying, praying, and contemplating before she takes her vows. On May 24, 1931, Agnes took her first vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. She took her name after St. Therese, the patron saint of missionaries.

On May 14, 1937, Teresa- took her final vows, promising to serve God for the rest of her life. Teresa eventually became the principal of Loreto Entally, a school in Entally (a district of Calcutta) where she taught history and geography. Every day, Teresa would look out of the convent to the streets of Calcutta. She longed to help the starving and dying people on the streets. She wasn’t allowed to because the Loreto order of nuns had a rule that the nuns couldn’t leave the convent unless they were seriously ill. In August 1946, Sister Teresa could stand it no longer. A four-day riot broke out in Calcutta between the Muslims and the Hindus. Because of this, food delivery was stopped. Sister Teresa went out to find food for her hundreds of students.

In the riot, 5000 Calcuttans were killed and an additional 15000 were injured. She met some soldiers who gave her some bags of food. They warned her to stay off the streets, but she would soon experience another call from God.

On September 10, 1946, Sister Teresa experienced a call within a call on an annual retreat. She was convinced that God wanted her to reach out to the poor. She said I was to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them. It was an order. To fail it would have been to break the faith.

In 1947, Sister Teresa was granted permission to leave the Loreto order of nuns. On August 16, 1948, Sister Teresa set out on the dirty streets of Calcutta wearing a simple cotton sari decorated with a blue border. Eventually, her organization would adopt this outfit as their habit.

Leaving the Loreto Abbey was very hard for Sister Teresa. She says that that was one of the greatest sacrifices she had ever made. The sisters at the Abbey were her only friends and companions and she was leaving them all behind. Before she went out to the slums of Calcutta, she went to Patna, a city 250 miles from Calcutta, to learn medical skills from Mother Anna Dengel. In Patna, the Medical Missionary Sisters took Sister Teresa in immediately and took her with them when they went to the houses of sick and dying people and local hospitals.

Sister Teresa learned to care for people by practicing with the sisters. In Patna, Sister Teresa learned how to deliver babies, fix broken bones, and she became aware of many common diseases and illnesses. The sisters found that she was a natural at caring for people, and within three months, Sister Teresa set out to help the poor of Calcutta.

In Calcutta, she got in touch will Father Van Exem, who would help her find a place to stay. Father arranged for Sister Teresa to stay at St. Joseph’s Home, where a group of nuns called the Little Sisters of the Poor welcomed her gladly. It was hard for Sister Teresa to know where to start helping in such a large city as Calcutta. She began by helping the Little Sisters of the Poor work with elderly people.

On December 21, 1948, Sister Teresa finally set out on the streets of Calcutta to start her mission from God. She walked out into the city with a packed lunch, but nothing else. She had no money, materials, or companions. The first place Sister Teresa decided to go was the slum that she could see from outside her window while teaching in the Loreto convent called Motijhil. She decided to start a school there.

On the first day, five children showed up for class. There were no desks, books, or chalkboards, but Sister Teresa still managed to teach. She started by teaching the alphabet. Soon, the number of students was almost forty. With Sister Teresa’s help, the students learned not only about language and numbers, but also they learned about personal hygiene and cleanliness.

Through her students, Sister Teresa met many families of Calcutta and also learned about the poor amount of medical care. Many of these families had no income because the man of the house had been stricken with the disease. In Calcutta, thousands of people died each year because they weren’t able to get medical care.

Mother Teresa encouraged all of the nuns to treat all of the poor like a gift from God. She made sure that they always treated the patients with respect, warmth, and kindness. By the middle of 1953, the Missionaries of Charities moved to a new residence that was big enough to house the growing number of nuns joining. Mother Teresa refused to have the name Reverend Mother Teresa because she would never set herself above anyone else.

In the 1960s and 1970s, over ten new houses were opened for the Missionaries of Charity in South America. In 1968, Mother Teresa was given a special request from the Pope. Pope Paul VI requested that Mother Teresa open a house in Rome. With virtually no hesitation, Mother Teresa brought the sisters to the poor outskirts of Rome.

The people there had no electricity, heat, or running water. Mother Teresa was willing to establish a home in Rome for these poor people. She also received an invitation to go to Tanzania in September of 1968. The buildings there were renovated for our people, the term Mother Teresa used instead of calling the people poor. Old people’s homes were established there, as well as nurseries and medical supply rooms.

On December 9, 1979, Mother Teresa was presented with the Nobel Peace Prize in a glorious atmosphere of beautiful flowers and cheering people. Along with the award, she was presented with $190,000. She received the prize for her outstanding work with the poor and her overall love for people.

Mother Teresa as she was known to the world was born as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxihu on 26 th of August 1910 in Yugoslavia, to a middle class Albanian family.

Her father was a businessman and was also a member of the community council.

Unfortunately he passed away when Agnes was only 9 years old. Her mother, Drana had to take care of Agnes all alone along with her two siblings Aga and Lazar.

Her mother had to sew in order to feed her children but she was also very considerate about her kids’ religious education.

Early life of Mother Teresa

Agnes along with her two other siblings were taught to treat the poor kindly. They were told to help anyone who came to their door asking for help.

They were taught to treat them with respect. During holidays, the family would make visits to pilgrimages to Letnice.

Agnes would sing in the choir and also played the mandolin. When Agnes was just 18, she made a vow to the church and would do numerous charitable works in Letnice.

In 1928, Agnes decided to work in India where several other nuns were already working under the Sisters of our Lady Loreto that was active in India at that point.

Agnes made the decision of joining the Sisters of our Lady Loreto and so she travelled to Dublin where the headquarters of Loreto was situated.

Over there she learnt how to speak English and officially began her religious journey.

She was renamed as Teresa

Sister Teresa De Lisieux, a 19 th century nun who was doing charitable work and had made good remarks through her works. It was after her that Agnes renamed herself “Mother Teresa”.

Work in India

Teresa arrived in Calcutta in 1929 and was working at the foot of the Himalayas and even in Darjeeling.

On 23 of May, 1929 Teresa was accepted as a novice and since then for the next 17 years she worked as a teacher in St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta.

It was an elite school for the privileged. She went back to Darjeeling in 1946 as she fell ill.

“ It was in the train I heard the call to give up all and follow Him to the slums to serve Him among the poorest of the poor ”, Mother Teresa recalled.

And so she was given the permission by the then Pope Pius XII. She left her previous order and began to teach the children in the slums of Calcutta.

Mother Teresa shared an incident that changed the course of the lives of many impoverished people.

In 1952, she found a woman who was pestered by the rats; she was half eaten up by the rodents in a street just in front of a hospital. Mother Teresa remained with the woman until she died.

Mother Teresa made an appeal to the higher authorities to provide her with a building where the poor and underprivileged could die in peace and with dignity. She was providing with a hostel.

Mother Teresa formed her very own missionary; the Missionary of Charity where each soul was devoted to bring the needful people and people who are dying in the streets. They were brought to the “Kalighat Home of Dying.”

Her work across the World

She served the hungry people in Ethiopia, the poverty stricken people in the towns of South Africa, people who suffered because of the radiation in Chernobyl.

In 1965, Pope Paul VI gave her the permission to extend her service by expanding her congregation to different parts of the world.

And so, Missionaries of Charity was extended to countries like East Africa, South America, North Europe and Venezuela. It has become like an international family.

She was there with and for anyone who needed her.

Because of her powerful voice she was able to convince the Israeli army and Palestinian guerrillas to hold the war, so that she could save the children who were trapped. She was able to rescue 37 children who were stuck in a border hospital.

Her charity was spread across the world. It extended from Calcutta to New York.

Mother Teresa’s Missionaries only consisted of 13 members at the beginning but by 1997, around 4000 members were a part of the institution and it had been established and functions in around 123 countries.

In the beginning of 1960, she had already sent her sisters in the other parts of India. Her houses were also opened in communist countries which also included Soviet Union, Cuba and Albania.

Mother Teresa increased her area of work by forming few more institutions that enhanced worldwide brotherhood and peace.

Those included Missionaries of Charity for Brothers that was founded in 1963, Contemplative Branch of Brothers in 1979 and, Contemplative Branch of sisters.

Recognition’s

Mother Teresa was no doubt was known across the world for her charitable work and unconditional service towards the poor. She was awarded with numerous awards.

India, in 1962, awarded her with Padmashree award and she was also given Bharat Ratna in the year 1980.

In 1979, she was given the Pope John XXIII Peace prize for her voluminous work.

In the year 1962, she was given Ramon Magsaysay Award for Peace and International Understanding for her tireless works in South East Asia.

Countries like USA, UK and Germany also honored her.

She was renowned worldwide after she got the Noble Peace Prize in 1979 for her work. Mother Teresa accepted the Noble peace Prize wearing a white saree that is identified with her work and with the poor.

Teresa accepted the prize with the words, “ I choose the poverty of the people of our people. But I am grateful to receive it in the name of the hungry, the naked, and the homeless, of the crippled, of the blind, of the lepers, of all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone .”

Despite her continuous efforts to help the poor, to preserve humanity and tireless service to the children she received criticism from many.

Germaine Greer, a feminist of the prevailing period bashed Teresa for her anti-abortion sentence and on her thoughts regarding contraceptive.

She was also accused of not providing the ill with proper medications despite receiving an enormous amount of donation.

She was even judged for placing flowers on the gravestone of Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha. But Mother Teresa was not moved or shattered by these comments rather she continued her selfless work wearing a smile on her face.

Her Health Deteriorated

While Mother Teresa Was in Rome visiting Pope John Paul II in 1983, she received her first heart attack and second in 1989.

At the beginning of September 1996, her health started to deteriorate and she was admitted to the Woodlands Nursing home in Calcutta where she was diagnosed with malaria as well as lung complications. On September 5, 1997 she left this world to her home above.

Her Last Journey

In October 19th 2003, Mother Teresa, otherwise now known as “Saint of the Gutters” was blessed by Pope John Paul II in front of thousands of her followers.

It’s a process of becoming saint. This process of beatification involves documenting the holy acts by the Vatican.

Two miracles were recorded which had healing of a lady suffering from abdominal tumor. The lady was found to be cured when came in contact with a locket which had a picture of Teresa.

Her second miracle consisted of a healing a man from Brazil suffering from brain tumor.

Many pilgrims, tourist’s members from different regions and religions and Catholics gathered in St. Peter’s Square as the ceremony went by.

19 years after, Mother Teresa’s death she was made a saint on September 4 th 2016 in Saint Peter’s Square by Pope Francis. She is also called “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.”

Mother Teresa joined the Sister of Loretto, a Catholic Irish group of sisters who were heading to India. Since Mother Teresa only knew her native tongue Serbian, she had to learn English to communicate with her peers. On reaching India, she joined a convent school as a nun and a teacher. Mother Teresa loved spending time with children but teaching the privileged children in the school did not provide her the peace she was looking for. Her heart ached for the children she saw on the streets, begging for the most basic of amenities. To resolve this inner turmoil, Mother Teresa opened an evening school for the depraved. She would gather all the poor children from the streets of Calcutta and teach them. It was this that gave her joy and brought her near to God. Although her intentions were pure, the task was a herculean one. Not a lot of children were interested in getting an education when they had bigger issues of hunger and health back home. Mother Teresa realized that she had a greater duty towards the people of the slums and roads than the monastery and so she decided to quit the organisation.

Mother Teresa opted for Indian citizenship in 1948 and made it the sole purpose of her life to serving her fellow people. In the year 1950, she established the Missionaries of Charity for the very same purpose. She wanted to directly feed and help the needy and so she decided that the best way to do that was if she gave up her comfortable life in the convent. She started living in the slums and would walk all day, in scorching heat or bone-chilling cold, asking for food and donations for the needy. The road she had taken was a desolate and lonely one. Not a lot of people took a nun clad in a white saree with blue stripes seriously but Mother Teresa was determined in her vision. Gradually people began taking notice of her noble deeds and the Missionaries of Charity started gaining recognition. A number of sisters and nuns became a part of the order and the group started receiving better help and fundings.

Work in Kolkata:

Mother Teresa established the ‘Kalighat Home for the Pure Heart’ or the ‘Nirmal Hriday’ to look after the people who were suffering a miserable fate. She believed that every person should be bestowed with a respectable death and that’s what she did. Any ailing person was accepted in the institution and if they met an unfortunate death, Mother Teresa ensured that they were given a proper funeral according to their faith. Mother Teresa also worked relentlessly for the people suffering from leprosy and AIDS. She did not let the prejudice of the society affect her in any way and would tend to these people personally. She also opened a special hospice called ‘Shanti Nagar’ for the very purpose.

Conclusion : It was her selflessness and empathy towards the people that earned her the title of ‘Saint of Our Times’. She was awarded the highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1980 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She did not believe in any external rewards but was gracious enough to accept them and spent all the reward funds in helping others. The Missionaries of Charity today is a conglomerate of 160 centers in India and abroad. Mother Teresa took her last breath on the 5th of September, 1997.
