Most high level positions in companies are filled by men, even though the workforce in many developed countries consists of 50 percent female workers. Companies should be required to allocate a certain percentage of management positions to women. Discuss, what is your opinion?

The inequality between men and women has always been a significant issue in society. , it is undeniable that most vital positions in companies are taken by males, not females. Therefore, that companies should allocate to women a certain number of these positions. However, I do not agree with this requirement completely.

On the other hand, the global economy is developing rapidly nowadays. In most corporations, distinguish men from women; they only focus on working efficiently. In this world, any employees who possess enough abilities and work in an effective way, be promoted to positions. Therefore, allocating the high level positions in companies to women is not necessary. Moreover, the instances of women in essential positions . Those women are very successful in their work and their lives.

In conclusion, although the inequality between men and women has reduced, it still is a social issue worth . Personally, in my opinion we should create as many opportunities for women to have an equal life as we can.

This essay needs some work. It has a good structure, the paragraphs are coherent, you are using enough linking words and the task is covered. On the other hand, the grammar needs much attention, the structure of the sentences should be worked on and there were some unclear expressions used. See comments underlined in blue for more details. Feminism is a social and political movement that advocates for the rights of women on the grounds of equality of sexes. It does not deny the biological differences between the sexes but demands equality in opportunities. It covers everything from social and political to economic arenas. In fact, feminist campaigns have been a crucial part of history in women empowerment. The feminist campaigns of the twentieth century made the right to vote, public property, work and education possible. Thus, an essay on feminism will discuss its importance and impact.

Importance of Feminism

Feminism is not just important for women but for every sex, gender, caste, creed and more. It empowers the people and society as a whole. A very common misconception is that only women can be feminists.

It is absolutely wrong but feminism does not just benefit women. It strives for equality of the sexes, not the superiority of women. Feminism takes the gender roles which have been around for many years and tries to deconstruct them.

This allows people to live freely and empower lives without getting tied down by traditional restrictions. In other words, it benefits women as well as men. For instance, while it advocates that women must be free to earn it also advocates that why should men be the sole breadwinner of the family? It tries to give freedom to all.

Most importantly, it is essential for young people to get involved in the feminist movement. This way, we can achieve faster results. It is no less than a dream to live in a world full of equality.

Thus, we must all look at our own cultures and communities for making this dream a reality. We have not yet reached the result but we are on the journey, so we must continue on this mission to achieve successful results.

Impact of Feminism

Feminism has had a life-changing impact on everyone, especially women. If we look at history, we see that it is what gave women the right to vote. It was no small feat but was achieved successfully by women.

Further, if we look at modern feminism, we see how feminism involves in life-altering campaigns. For instance, campaigns that support the abortion of unwanted pregnancy and reproductive rights allow women to have freedom of choice.

Moreover, feminism constantly questions patriarchy and strives to renounce gender roles. It allows men to be whoever they wish to be without getting judged. It is not taboo for men to cry anymore because they must be allowed to express themselves freely.

Similarly, it also helps the LGBTQ community greatly as it advocates for their right too. Feminism gives a place for everyone and it is best to practice intersectional feminism to understand everyone’s struggle.

“Trickle-Down Feminism” – Sarah Jaffe

Feminists celebrate successful women who have seemingly smashed through the glass ceiling, but the reality is that most women are still under it. Even in fast-growing fields where women dominate (retail sales, food service, etc), women make less money than men. In this essay from Dissent Magazine, author Sarah Jaffe argues that when the fastest-growing fields are low-wage, it isn’t a victory for women. At the same time, it does present an opportunity to change the way we value service work. It isn’t enough to focus only on “equal pay for equal work” as that argument mostly focuses on jobs where someone can negotiate their salary. This essay explores how feminism can’t succeed if only the concerns of the wealthiest, most privileged women are prioritized.

“What No One Else Will Tell You About Feminism” – Lindy West

Written in Lindy West’s distinct voice, this essay provides a clear, condensed history of feminism’s different “waves.” The first wave focused on the right to vote, which established women as equal citizens. In the second wave, after WWII, women began taking on issues that couldn’t be legally-challenged, like gender roles. As the third wave began, the scope of feminism began to encompass others besides middle-class white women. Women should be allowed to define their womanhood for themselves. The history of transactivsm and feminism is messy. This essay begins with the author’s personal experience with gender and terms like trans*, which Halberstam prefers. The asterisk serves to “open the meaning,” allowing people to choose their categorization as they see fit. The main body of the essay focuses on the less-known history of feminists and trans* folks. He references essays from the 1970s and other literature that help paint a more complete picture. In current times, the tension between radical feminism and trans* feminism remains, but changes that are good for trans* women are good for everyone.

It has many layers involving race, class, gender, power, climate, justice, etc, as well as many voices. This has led to more clarity about injustice. Solnit describes watching the transformation and how progress and “ wokeness ” are part of a historical process. Progress is hard work. The opening sentence is, “I am failing as a woman.” She goes on to describe how she wants to be independent, but also to be taken care of. She wants to be strong and in charge, but she also wants to surrender sometimes. For a long time, she denied that she was human and flawed. However, the work it took to deny her humanness is harder than accepting who she is. While Gay might be a “bad feminist,” she is also deeply committed to issues that are important to feminism. This free ESL lesson plan on women’s rights has been designed for adults and young adults at an intermediate (B1/B2) to advanced (C1/C2) level and should last around 45 to 60 minutes for one student.

It is quite amazing that even in the 21st century, more than 100 years after women won the right to vote, it is still necessary to debate the issue of women’s rights. Despite much progress, women still find themselves at a disadvantage in the world of work, are subjected to discrimination in society, and face an increased risk of violence. There are many reasons for this, from centuries of religious indoctrination convincing people that women are not equal to men, to more modern political ideologies that reject the idea of equality. In this ESL lesson plan on women’s rights, students will have the opportunity to discuss and express their opinions on issues such as what women’s rights are, and why they are still necessary on the modern day.

PRE-CLASS ACTIVITIES

Reading activity Before the English class, send the following article to the students and ask them to read it while making a list of any new vocabulary or phrases they find (explain any the students don’t understand in the class):

Women Deliver | New Research: 25 years after “Women’s rights are human rights,” progress towards gender equality has stalled in some areas; but opportunity remains

The article looks at the progress made since the UN’s Beijing Declaration in 1995 that sought to advance the rights of women around the world. The article highlights progress such as access to contraception and education, but also notes that there is still more that needs to be done to create a truly equal world. What do they think about the issues raised in the article? Do they agree with what was said? Can they think of any ways they might disagree with the content of the article?

Video activity To save time in class for the conversation activities, the English teacher can ask the students to watch the video below and answer the listening questions in Section 3 of the lesson plan at home. The questions for the video are styled in a way similar to an exam like the IELTS.

The video for this class is a called “The Historic Women’s Suffrage March On Washington” by TED Ed which looks at the history of the suffragette movement in the United States which eventually led to the 19th Amendment which guaranteed women’s right to vote.

IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES

The focus in the class is on conversation in order to help improve students’ fluency and confidence when speaking in English as well as boosting their vocabulary.

This lesson opens with a short discussion about the article the students read before the class. Next, the students can give their opinion on the quote at the beginning of the lesson plan – what they think the quote means and if they agree with it. This is followed by an initial discussion on the topic including the differences between men and women, family roles, and the most important women in history.

After this, students will learn some vocabulary connected with women’s rights such as sexist , feminist and gender pay gap . This vocabulary has been chosen to boost the students’ knowledge of less common vocabulary that could be useful for preparing for English exams like IELTS or TOEFL. The vocabulary is accompanied by a cloze activity and a speaking activity to test the students’ comprehension of these words.

If the students didn’t watch the video before the class, they can watch it after the vocabulary section and answer the listening questions. Before checking the answers, ask the students to give a brief summary of the video and what they thought about the content.

Finally, there is a more in-depth conversation about women’s rights. In this speaking activity, students will talk about issues such as whether true equality for women exists, the risks women face, and why women around the world have less access to education.

After the class, students will write about their opinion of women’s rights. This could be a short paragraph or a longer piece of writing depending on what level the student is at. The writing activity is designed to allow students to practise and improve their grammar with the feedback from their teacher. For students who intend to take an international English exam such as IELTS or TOEFL, there is an alternative essay question to practise their essay-writing skills.

In IELTS Writing Task 2, students are asked to write a formal essay of at least 250 words, in 4-5 paragraphs based on the given writing task 2 essay topics. The task is similar for both Academic and General Training with regards to the type of questions and the scoring, but the topics given for General Training will be slightly easier than Academic. Given below is an essay with sample answers on the topic – Is it right to exclude males or females from certain professions because of their gender? – that will help you to practise and get a good score.

Question Analysis

This is quite a difficult question to answer because of the way it is phrased. In order to answer this question correctly we should analyse it carefully.

Keywords – Women and men/strengths and weaknesses

Micro-Key words – right to exclude/certain professions/because of gender

Instruction words – give reasons/relevant examples/own knowledge or experience

The first common mistake many students made was answering the question using the keywords and ignoring the micro-keywords. These students wrote an answer about the difference between men and women in the workplace and how certain jobs are better suited to men or women. This is not what the question asks.

The second thing most students did wrong was either not supporting their ideas with reasons or not, including examples from their own knowledge or experience. These students just listed lots of ideas about the difference between men and women in the workplace without fully explaining what they mean and how this is linked to the question.

A good answer would specifically address the micro-keywords i.e. is it right to exclude men or women from certain professions? The most important words here are right , exclude and certain .

Idea Generation

Reasons why it is right to exclude men or women from certain professions:.

Most men do not have the skills to work in certain professions, such as a nanny.
Society does not accept men who work in certain professions, such as a beautician.
Some women do not have the physical attributes to work in certain professions, such as a soldier.
Society does not accept women who work in certain professions, such as a construction worker.

Reasons why it is not right to exclude men or women from certain professions:

It is unfair.
People should not be discriminated against because of their gender.
That view has no place in a modern, free society.
Excluding women from certain professions harms the economy.

We now need to think about which ideas to choose. I personally believe that women should not be excluded from any profession, but my personal feelings do not matter in an IELTS writing test. I should choose the ideas I feel confident explaining and supporting with examples.

I will therefore write about why I think it is right to exclude men or women from certain professions.

The task is to answer a direct question and it is therefore an opinion (agree/disagree) essay and I will follow this structure:

Sentence 1- Summary

Model Essay 1 :

Women and men are commonly seen as having different strengths and weaknesses. Is it right to exclude males or females from certain professions because of their gender?

Males and females are often viewed as having differing skill sets. It is agreed that it is correct to exclude people from certain jobs on the basis of their gender, but only in very limited circumstances. This essay will first discuss how physical attributes prevent women from excelling in particular roles; secondly discuss how society at large rejects men from undertaking certain careers, followed by a reasoned conclusion.

For many years the general consensus in the armed forces is that women should not be allowed to participate in combat missions. This is because most women lack the brute strength required for this particular occupation and it is therefore right to prevent them from joining the ranks. For example, the American Army recently allowed some women to fight on the front line and the Department of Defence deemed the experiment a failure, due to lack of fighting effectiveness. Despite this, many women have fought in many wars, famously on the Eastern Front for Russia and the Viet Cong in Vietnam, so maybe it is men’s’ attitudes that prevent them performing rather than their stature.

Society has yet to accept men in many traditionally female positions, such as nanny or beautician. Businesses feel that it is fine to not hire men for these posts because most of their customers would not be willing to have a man perform that service. I personally know of one example when a friend failed at the interview stage when applying to become kindergarten teacher because he was the wrong sex.

To summarise, in limited circumstances it is just to prohibit people from certain occupations, but only if they cannot physically perform or if the general consensus is that it is a single sex post.

Model Essay 2 :

It is evident that the gender gap is closing in the vast majority of occupations in today’s society. However, some remain with the opinion that females and males are born to have differences in terms of their vocational preferences. Despite this, I would argue in this essay that it is wrong to exclude a certain gender from a certain occupation.

It is undoubtable that a certain gender could be more appreciated in some professions. It is mainly determined by the biological differences between males and females. For example, females are perceived to be more caring and nurturing by nature, so that they could be more suitable working in nurseries and hospitals; whereas, males are more likely to be employed in mining and construction industries because they are physically stronger. In those cases, the gender gap may remain in the short future.

However, for the vast majority of professions, making occupations more open to both genders has significant advantages. Different genders could bring different perspectives into work, which could generate more possibilities for a company’s development. For example, a male nurse could offer his unique experience to a female dominated team in order to promote a more holistic care to patients in both genders. Moreover, there is evidence that a mixed gender working environment is often proven to be more efficient. Therefore, companies could benefit from the different perspectives and efficiency that mixed gender teams bring.

To conclude, although some occupations remain to be female- or male-dominant, there are more advantages to allow both genders having the freedom of their vocational choices. Companies that facilitate this equality could benefit from the increased possibilities and efficiency.

There is a truth that the strengths and weaknesses of men and women quite differ due to the disparity in their genders and apparently, it dramatically affects their opportunities to do a specific work. However, I think that this reason is not strong enough to exclude males or females from certain professions just because of their genders and wherever possible, they should be given freedom of choice and gender equality in employment should be encouraged. On the one hand, the argument that supports the jobs’s orientation based on their genders remains commonly dominant because these males or females seem to have an apparent instinct and physical capability to excel other sex in accomplishing their jobs. For example: Women seem to have a predominant role in medical services thanks to their natural instinct of motherhood and feminity. Meanwhile, there are some special jobs requiring a great deal of physical strengths and persistence like coal sea-fare sailing and fishing, mineral mining or forest logging which used to be done mainly by men because they have shown their extraordinary abilities to work under high pressure and long-lasting endurance . On the other hand, in some occupations, the matter of making jobs easily accessible to both genders has brought about some practical advantages, not only for them but also the whole society. For instance: Female police officers may better deal with the domestic violence and child abuse in the families thanks to having a greater understanding of gender inequality and its adverse effects on the emotions of every members and better strategies to tackle the conflict than their male counterparts. Whereas, male kindergarten nannies probably have a better understanding of the characters of young boys, leading to helping them form a good dignity and a strong manner. Although these people only account for a little proportion of the whole labour force, we are obliged to respect their freedom of choice in pursuit of a career to bring about their job’s self-satisfaction and respond to various and abundant demands of the society. In conclusion, although the difference in physical abilities and emotional feelings between males and females has a large impact on the choice of jobs and the job assignment of the society, in most of cases, it is possible to allow men to undertake many female-dominated occupations and vice versa so that they can succeed in their chosen careers and serving plentiful requirements of the society..

Nowadays, when women and men become more equal than those in the past and more and more women are occupying many important positions in society, there is still suggestion that males and females should be excluded from some kinds of job. To a certain extent, I agree with this opinion. First, there are some professions only suitable for men, and one of which is construction work, for example. It is extremely difficult for a woman to climb between girders of Eiffel Tower and paint each of them. Or how can she stand hanging outside a skyscraper for cleaning glass windows? Another example can be found in military duty which probably cause soldiers lose their lives in battle field. It is said that what a woman have to do to serve her country is not sacrificing herself, but rather giving birth for future generation. Second, only women’s personality fit them particularly to nursing profession which requires great patience and sacrifice. It is hardly expected that a man characterized by aggressiveness and decisiveness is willing to pamper the elderly fully erratic. And with strong personality, almost no man accept helping old people with grooming and personal hygiene, which is widely regarded as a humble occupation. However, it is not recommended, in general, to discriminate between men and women in regards to their occupations. They should be equally granted opportunities with the aim of promoting their talent to the limit. As can be seen in practice, we used to witness some exemplary women being successful in science, two of them was Marie Curie awarded 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya, the first woman appointed to a full professorship in Northern Europe, and we have, at the present time, the most powerful woman politician from Germany, Angela Merkel. In conclusion, we only exclude males or females from a very few exceptional occupations. Otherwise it would be better to encourage equality of job opportunity between men and woman.

And men were also criticized and looked down on if they were found sewing or cooking. Nowadays those negative thoughts have decreased but they haven’t totally disappeared. If the work is not very hard for them to do, if they’re interested in it and they have a flair for it, why don’t we let them do it? Only when they do something that they love can they become succcessful in the future. The better the workers are, the better results they bring. I think we should encourage any talented person to do whatever he/she is good at and we shouldn’t consider gender as a problem, it can help developing a nation. Some famous chiefs,make-up artists,… are not females, and some famous engineers, footballers,… are not males, but they can make their own fame and lead a happy, prosperous life. In conclusion, people should consider carefully how the jobs effect men or women before excluding them from certain professions.

There is no doubt that man and women possess different advantages as well as disadvantages. Thus, some people think that males or females should not be allowed to join several professions because of their gender. I myself disagree with this viewpoint. To begin with, I believe that we should not prohibit males or females from any jobs due to the following reasons. First of all, it is widely admitted that man or woman can now do jobs that has long been for the other sex only. For example, in the past, women were not allowed to join military in a lot of countries. However, nowadays, the percentage of women in the army has significantly increased. Interestingly, the working environment seems to be more lovely and flexible with the presence of both genders. In addition, it will not be fair if we exclude males or females from any jobs because we are trying to establish the gender equality. People now are getting opener and opener in assessing men and women. Therefore, grouping them in any professions seems to be an act that goes against efforts of building parity between men and women. However, some claim that women are not suitable for several tough jobs that have long been for men only because these professions require standards like strengths, endurance and strong will. I find it hard to agree because it is proved that women can contribute a lot in whatever role they play. They, for instance, might not be part of military fights, but they will be incredibly useful in preparations or assistances that are always essential and men can hardly bring out an equal performance. Therefore, there should not be stereotypes in this case no matter what gender they are. In conclusion, though males and females have different capacities, there is still room for them to show their strengths and assist the other sex. From my perspective, recruiters should keep an open mind toward men and women in order to choose employees that they are looking for.

Besides, a female police officer can be more sensitive to comprehend the situation or the motivation of a crime and have right decisions to deal with it. In conclusion, the occupation of a person depends on his liking, passion and fortes, not his inborn characteristics. The difference in terms of sex-based work is gradually fading away.

In conclusion, it is hard to say that the men are better than the women or the women are better than the men in the professional carriers because of their gender. Some jobs might suitable for the men and others might good for the women. Males and females are equalled in the carrier application.

Gender has always been an issue for bot men and women in getting a job. Traditionally, men are the ones who went out to work to earn money to support their family, whereas women sat in the home and spent their time more on domestic chores. With time passes, more women have started to get involved almost in every professions that the males are already involved in. But there are certain professions which accept only a gender and exclude other.

Some people would argue that it is more common that men get involved in jobs which require physical strength but this is not the case with women. Because unlike the body system of a male, the female body system is comparatively different and it is unhealthy for the female body system to indulge in physically strenuous activity. The reason is it can cause severe muscular or even chemical changes in the female body system which may lead to certain diseases in their later life.

On the other hand, others would argue that the acceptance of employees should be based on a person’s personal interest, experience and knowledge but not on gender. For instance, form the very beginning, nursing was highly recommended and allowed only for females. But today, more males are interested and qualified in the field, so the superiors are also happy with employing more male nurses than female, particularly for dealing with male patients.

Besides that, there is no much work in the world which specifies only for a certain gender. For almost every job, whether it is high income or low income, both men and women have evenly indulged in it. For instance, there are both males and females who are working as cleaners which is a low income and there are both genders who are qualified in high income jobs such as doctor and engineer.

To sum up, the views support the argument that certain genders should and should not be excluded from certain professions. There are jobs that require hard work such as working on the construction site, doctors and engineers and light work such as graphic designing and office works. But it is more advisable for women to indulge more on light work to avoid physical illness, however, this does not mean that the males are obliged to work in physically demanding jobs while women work in less strenuous jobs. This is preferably depends on the strength and the situation of the job, and most importantly the person’s interest in it.

History predicates that Japanese women, especially married have experienced a period of gender discrimination that they did not have any chances of promotion at work. It is extremely unfair and it is the root of commotions in Japanese community. Back up to the issue of occupational segregation, perhaps from now on, no politicians in any countries make the same mistake as Japanese ones in the past. It is crystal clear that politicians value peaceful labour above riots. Secondly, no one has inborn merits that stand them in good stead. Professions in the fields of mathematics, computer science, the natural sciences and technology are for men and not for women. This attitude is far from being valid. According to a newest study, if a man finds himself working in a “female- oriented” job, he ends up earning 12.5 percent less than his male counterparts, whereas a woman who works in a “male-dominated” field earns 25.9 percent more than her female peers. So interestingly women in fact are earning more than men because of their less committing faults and their capacity of dealing with matters with accuracy and caution. Thus, what is the best solution for the thorny problem of making a more equal workforce? There is no way around but the labor pool must be balanced out by drawing from a supply of trained men or women to cover the skill gaps. But it is tough to achieve in reality if gender discrimination is alive. Therefore, it is time to exclude job stereotyping by gender from our community if we want to see men in the maternity ward and day care centers or women in trucking, construction and heavy machinery operations. It would be great to achieve an ideal employment balance on a national scale and we believe in the right direction of our government for a workforce that never sleeps.

It has become extremely common for children to operate under pressure more and more as the life passes. This essay will discuss its causes, including the development of social media and high expectations from the society, and how psychological sessions and reduction of social media will help.

Nowadays, kids, as the next generation, experience pressure and high expectations from their surrounding. The world has been rapidly changing since the past 50 years, making society pressure on the new generation. For example, most parents prefer their kids to spend their free time reading books, rather than playing with their peers. Additionaly, social media makes keeping reasonable level of expectations harder, making it a toxic environment for developing minds. Children learn to behave according to the social standards, which are adjusted by social media.

The most feasible solution is for parents and schools to monitor kids’ attentively, as well as hire specialists who work with children mental health. Psychology sessions would greatly help children to mitigate pressure from both academic and social perspectives. For example, if a kid faced troubles in social communication with peers, psychologist would help him or her solve this issue. Nonetheless, having a specialist around can be not enough, therefore, parents should control how much time their children spend monitoring social media. Growing generation would rely on reasonably perception of life, if they cut off the social network usage. It has been proven, that those who do not tend to use social media for a long time are much happier than those who does.

Traditionally, women were believed to stay at home and there were severe restrictions imposed on them. They were not allowed to go out, study, work, vote, own property, etc. However, with the passage of time, people are becoming aware of the objective of feminism. Any person who supports feminism and is a proponent of equal human rights for women is considered a feminist.

Feminism is a challenge to the patriarchal systems existing in society. Despite this strong movement burning in high flames to burn the orthodox and dominant culture, there are still some parts of the world that are facing gender inequality. So, it is our duty to make a world free of any discrimination.

Essay on Feminism 250 Words

Talking about feminism in a broader sense, then, it is not restricted only to women. It refers to the equality of every sex or gender. Some people feel offended by the concept of feminism as they take it in the wrong way. There is a misconception that only women are feminists. But this is not the case. Feminists can be anyone who supports the noble cause of supporting the concept of providing equal rights to women.

Feminism is not restricted to single-sex i.e. women, but it advocates for every person irrespective of caste, creed, colour, sex, or gender. As an individual, it is our duty to help every person achieve equal status in society and eradicate any kind of gender discrimination .

Equality helps people to live freely without any traditional restrictions. At present, the Government of India is also contributing to providing equal rights to the female sector through various Government schemes like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Pradhan Mantri Mahila Shakti Kendra, One Stop Center, and many more.

Apart from these Government policies, campaigns like reproductive rights or abortion of unwanted pregnancy also give women the right to choose and lead their life without any external authority of a male.

Feminism has also supported the LGBTIQA+ community so that people belonging to this community could come out and reveal their identity without any shame. The concept of feminism also helped them to ask for equal rights as men and women. Thus, it could be concluded that feminism is for all genders and a true feminist will support every person to achieve equal rights and hold a respectable position in society.

Most people doing IELTS Writing Task 2 get stressed out about which IELTS essay topics they will face. They worry about getting an unfamiliar topic and not having any good ideas or enough vocabulary to complete the task.

This article will help you by giving you the most common IELTS essay topics and showing you how to use these to get higher scores.

Why is it important to know the IELTS essay topics?

If you are familiar with the most common topics you will have a huge advantage because you will be better at two of the most important things:

Thinking of relevant ideas

Idea Generation

Of all the things people worry about when doing Task 2 , not having enough ideas to complete the essay is normally top of the list. However, you should remember that IELTS is not a test of your knowledge, it is a test of your English. The examiners do not expect you to be an expert on the essay topic, they just want you to show that you can write clearly and persuasively in English.

You should also realise that IELTS is a global exam and when the writers of the exam are making the questions, their main concern is writing questions that can be understood by nearly everyone in the world. For example, common IELTS essay topics are education, crime and health. Everyone in the world has an opinion on these everyday topics and you need to understand that the examiners are not looking for the ‘best’ ideas, they are just looking for relevant ideas.

Let’s look at an example question on the topic of international aid:

Rich countries should help poorer countries when they suffer natural disasters. Do you agree?

You don’t have to think of the ‘best’ ideas, you just have to think of two ideas that are relevant to this question. Reasons why rich countries should help are:

It is the morally correct thing to do.
They have legal obligations under international law.
Not helping will result in many deaths and suffering.
They have more than enough money to do this.
It is in their interests to do so for the peace and security of the world.
Some of their own people might be involved in the disaster.
Every rich country has a fund for disaster relief within their budget.
They might suffer a disaster one day too and need help from the international community.

You obviously do not need to think of this many ideas and some of the ideas are better than others, but the point I am trying to make is that there are lots of ‘relevant’ ideas you could think of.

Despite this, you will obviously be more confident and be able to think of ideas more quickly if you are familiar with the common topics. Below I will show you how you can use the common IELTS essay topics to learn about the general topics and improve your English at the same time.

25% of your marks come from vocabulary and this is directly linked to IELTS essay topics. One of the main ways the examiner will judge your vocabulary is something called ‘topic-specific vocabulary’. The idea is that someone with a wide-ranging vocabulary should be able to talk about any of the common essay topics easily using words that are specific to that topic.

For example, if the question was the same as above, you would be expected to use words like ‘international aid’, ‘wealthy’, ‘developed’, ‘developing’, ‘earthquake’, ‘hurricane’, ‘relief fund’, ‘obligation’, ‘moral’ etc. These are words that you use specifically to talk about the essay topic. You don’t have to use these words, but they would help.

Therefore, the more familiar you are with the topic, the more ‘topic-specific’ vocabulary you will know and the higher your score will be. Knowing the most common IELTS essay topics allows you to focus on the most important vocabulary . Below I will show you the most common topics and some of the more important words you should know.

Are IELTS essay topics predictable?

Yes and no. You will obviously not be able to predict the exact topic that will come up. There are just too many to do this and it would be a very easy test if you knew what the exact topic was going to be.

However, there are between 10 common topics that come up more than others. You should focus on these first, especially if you don’t have much time before the test.

How can I use the most common topics?

There are two main ways you can use the most common IELTS essay topics to your advantage. The first is to familiarise yourself with them while practising and improving your English and the second is to focus on topic-specific vocabulary.

Common Topic Familiarisation

If you are going to do well in the IELTS test you need to be using and exposing yourself to English every day. You should be reading, listening, writing and speaking in English as much as possible. You should make sure that if you are listening to or reading something in English you do it within the common topics. For example, you could listen to a podcast on technology one day and then read a newspaper report about education or health the next day. Most of the questions are on current topics, therefore staying up to date with what is happening in the world will really help you think of ideas.

For example, three of the biggest news stories of 2015 were the refugee crisis, terrorism and internet privacy issues. These topics have, unsurprisingly, already appeared on the IELTS writing paper this year.

If you really want to get advanced, you could also try making up your own questions based on the news of the day and then give these questions to a study partner. This is something that I do with my classes. They go to a popular news site like the BBC and write a Task 2 question based on one of the stories they were reading about and then they give it to a classmate who does the essay for homework.

Vocabulary – Notebook

There are two things you can do here: start a vocabulary notebook and focus on key topic-specific vocabulary.

As mentioned above, you should be listening to and reading English as much as possible before your test. This will not only improve your listening and reading skills but will, more importantly, expand your vocabulary.

When you are reading or listening you will always notice words that you don’t know. Most students simply look these up immediately in the dictionary and then forget about them. I think this is a total waste of time because the words do not stay in your head and you never use them again. A much better thing to do is to start a vocabulary notebook. This is the single most effective way to improve your vocabulary. Follow the steps below:

Buy a notebook that you will only use for vocabulary.
When you see or hear a new word try to guess the meaning from the context of the sentence or paragraph. This step is very important because it is an essential skill to develop and will help you remember the words.
Check the meaning after you have guessed it in the dictionary.
Note the new word and the definition in your vocabulary notebook.
Pronunciation
Review the list of words and test yourself on these words after one week, two weeks, one month and two months. Soon you will have expanded your vocabulary dramatically.

You can also do this by using apps like Memrise to record and review vocabulary.

Vocabulary- Topic Specific Words

As mentioned above, one of the ways in which the examiner judges your vocabulary is how many topic-specific words you use. Learning these words before the exam for the most common essay topics should help you get a higher vocabulary score.

However, one of the worst things you could do is simply learn a list of words and insert them into your essay. This is not how good vocabulary works and the examiners are trained to spot this. Your focus should always be on accuracy i.e. using words correctly. Because of this I advise my students to use the 100% rule.

You should never use any word or phrase in IELTS essays if you are not 100% sure about it. By 100% I mean that you are sure about its:

If you are not 100% sure about the things above, then do not use it. If you do, you will probably get it wrong and this will lower your band score.

Feminism can help learners practice their speaking and listening skills while engaging in meaningful discussions about gender equality, women’s rights, and other related topics.

About Feminism

Feminism is a social, political, and cultural movement that advocates for equal rights and opportunities for all genders. The term “feminism” often refers to the fight for women’s rights and gender equality, but it also encompasses other issues, such as LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice and economic equality.

Feminism has a long and complex history, dating back to the late 19th century when women began to organize and fight for their right to vote. Since then, feminist movements have taken various forms and approaches, from the suffrage movement to second-wave feminism, intersectional feminism and more.

Step 2: Write the first sentence, which tells the examiner what the paragraph is about- in this case advantages and disadvantages along with the first point. Step 3: Explain the first point. (Sentence 4,5,6) Note: Use a connector for the point. For example: To begin with, the first advantage of, the main benefit of, Firstly,

The first benefit of automation is that it saves human lives. There are many dangerous jobs like mining, bomb disposal, sewage cleaning, where they have made human involvement redundant. Body Paragraph 3 (Sentences 11 – 14): Step 1: Use a contrast connector like On the other hand, However to inform the examiner that you have switched to drawbacks. Step2: Mention the disadvantage 1 and explain it (Sentence 11,12) Step3: Mention the disadvantage 2 and explain it ( Sentence 13,14) Note: use connectors with the points.

Another negative of machines is that they lead to dehumanization. Interacting with machines cannot provide the same sense of satisfaction as talking to a human as machines cannot empathize and understand our feelings. (Sentence 13,14)

Step1: Just one sentence, use a formal connector like In conclusion, To conclude, In summary, To sum up. Please don’t use idioms like Every coin has two sides, Every rose has thorns- Informal and cliched. Step2: Repeat the thesis. To summarize, I would like to reiterate that while automation has some disadvantages, I believe that advantages are far more.(Sentence 15)

The whole essay

It is true that in recent years there has been a considerable advancement in robotics and automation, and many challenging tasks are now done through machines. Although there are a few drawbacks of the growing usage of machines, I believe the advantages certainly outweigh them. (45 words)

The first benefit of automation is that it saves human lives. There are many dangerous jobs like mining, bomb disposal, sewage cleaning, where they have made human involvement redundant. For instance, in Fukushima robots were employed and are still being used to clean the nuclear fusion disaster. Similarly, in health care, many complex surgeries, which were earlier considered too risky, have been made possible by robotics, saving precious human lives. (64 words)

Secondly, automation saves time enabling people to enjoy and relax. For instance, many monotonous and repetitive works like washing, cleaning etcetera can be done by machines, thus saving people time, which they can spend with friends or family or on their hobbies. Finally, automation enables higher productivity and efficiency by reducing labour costs and errors. This not only benefits employers by increasing profits, but also consumers by providing cheaper, quality products. (71 words)

On the other hand, the main drawback of automation is that it can displace human labour and lead to unemployment. In a way, this also leads to income equality, benefitting the industry owners and hurting the employees. Another negative of machines is that they lead to dehumanization. Interacting with machines can provide the same sense of satisfaction as talking to a human as machines cannot empathise and understand our feelings. (70 words)

To summarize, I would like to reiterate that while increasing dependence on automation has some disadvantages, I believe that advantages are far more. (23 words)

Hello Ma’am, Thank you for your short and simple ways to write the task 2 essays, it helps a lot really. I had a query in the advantage/disadvantage essay, sometimes we are asked a neutral question like:

Most career choices demand vocational skills or specialist knowledge. However, despite this, most schools still teach academic subjects such as history or social studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this?

In such a question I don’t think opinion will be important, so for this shall we go for only 2 body paragraphs, one for pros and other for cons, will that be fine, or shall we go for the above format in this page of yours?.

Statement: Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organization. why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

It is true that these days masses are selecting to do freelancing instead of work under any organization. I will shed a light on this case in the next paragraph.

The first reason for self-employment is freedom from restrictions. For instance, people need to follow each and every rule made by the organization however it is not part of own work. Secondly, be self-employed is a great yardstick to learn new skills every day with different kinds of tasks. For example, people related to the IT industry can receive the best opportunities to work on their dream projects as per their own skills.

The first drawback of being self-employed is the fixed remuneration. Freelancing did not give the assurity of the monthly income therefore this can be the reason behind the instability in terms of finances. For instance, if in any month people will not get work as per their requirements or as much as they need to fulfill their monthly expenditures then this can be a hurdle for them.

Secondly, self-employed people can not imbibe the qualities of teamwork. Working in a team gives the sense of responsibility for their own tasks which is the good reason behind the career growth. For example, self-employed people work in their own comfort and because of this, they do not deliver their work on committed time.

Lastly, the organization working structure and atmosphere can not get in self-employment. The company working criteria and atmosphere can boost the confidence and energy to do more work in which people are able to learn the workflow of these organizations. Moreover, the facilities given by these companies are beneficial for the future. For example, medical leaves, paid leaves, health insurance etcetera.

Overall, freelancing is becoming popular these days among people however there are many disadvantages as well to be self-employed.
