‘G-LOC’ Review

Stars: Stephen Moyer, Tala Gouveia, Casper Van Dien, John Rhys-Davies, Mike Beckingham, Alana Wallace, Shayne Ward, Spencer Collings, Toby Osmond | Written and Directed by Tom Paton

It’s pretty obvious by now that I am a fan of this man and his crew… I always look forward to seeing what he has cooked up in his labyrinthian mind and knowing that this time he had a well known studio (Goldfinch and Lionsgate) and some pretty big names onboard I was somewhat excited to check out G-LOC … Oh and did I mention we were treading on some straight up sci-fi territory this time! of course I say straight up but when has Paton ever let his movies be confined to just one genre.

Of course this time we have what looks to be more of a tastier budget than we are used to and with that comes some bigger names and an all round sexier scope to deal with. What I love about his crew though is that yes we shall add some bigger names like Stephen Moyer ( True Blood ), Casper Van Dien ( Starship Troopers ) and John Rhys-Davies ( LOTR, Sliders ) but hey we are going to throw some of our favorite Paton alumni in the mix too. Giving this BIGGER and GRANDER feeling with a canny sense of familiarity.

Bran Marshall (Stephen Moyer) has made his escape from Earth after losing everything to find a new home on Rhea. Guided by his AI companion Edison (voiced by Mike Beckingham). Bran has been drifting through space for 8 years, when he comes across a seemingly deserted Rhean ship. He is soon forced to team up with self proclaimed Rhean human killer Ohsha Rainer (Tala Gouveia) as they realize all is not how it seems with the early settlers having decided that Refugees from Earth are no longer welcome. Bran and Ohsha must team up to stop the ship which is hurtling towards the planet acting essentially as a huge death bomb. Leading to a quest of self discovery as they seek to thwart the nefarious plans with Edison’s help while another dark force in the form of Decker (Casper Van Dien) will stop at nothing to complete his mission. Could Bran be every ones last great hope?

OK, lets get it out of the way. I’m a big fan… Big, big fan of G-LOC . And I’m going to say it (again), one of the BIG studios just needs to throw a bag of cash at this director and let him spread his wings like the majestic peacock. Seriously, we discovered Mr Paton a few years back with Pandorica and I fell in love with what this guy and his team had created on a LOW to NO budget. With each release they have elevated and elaborated, taking huge leaps in substance and style which has brought us to G-LOC .

Cast wise what can I say, I mean how am I supposed to sit here and pick faults with Casper Van Dien, Stephen Moyer and John Rhys-Davies. These guys have been at the top of their game for a number of years BUT what I can do is tell you how much of a revelation Tala Gouveia was. The PatonVerse is full of strong as hell leading kick-ass ladies and Tala more than meets the bar set before her. Truthfully I had only seen Tala in an ITV drama before and this was a pretty big departure from that, whereby she got to show many different sides to her acting and mix it up with the best. Keep an eye out for her… I definitely see a bright future ahead for Tala.

Of course we have some of our regulars returning with roles for Alana Wallace (I will never tire of seeing her on the screen), Shayne Ward returns for a small role alongside stunt choregrapher turned actor Spencer Collings; Toby “AYE” Osmond makes a brief appearance and Mike Beckingham lends his voice this time to AI character Edison. Now let’s briefly talk about Edison, because when I had this character explained to me I couldn’t help but think “a computer program that looks like a stick figure… Ohhhkay” however this is another case of you cant beat simplicity and if I am honest with you I want an Edison in my life. Props to Moyer and Beckingham for making a scene with a stick figure the emotional core of this flick!

There is a lot to unpack in G-LOC , in terms of story and what – on the face of things – seems like a fight for survival in space. However this movie can be stripped right back, revealing some real world, of the moment, social commentary – which is great for those who want those layers. A great sci-fi is one that makes you unknowingly think about world circumstances through a different lens and I thought G-LOC did this in spades but at the same time its a 90-odd minute space romp that keeps you entertained and who doesn’t want that?

I am going to give two last shout outs here because I don’t think enough gets said about these guys and they have been part of this team since way back. George Burt is rapidly becoming easily one of the best DOPs to still be called “independent”. His eye on this flick and his movements are just gorgeous, really reminding the audience of some of those great sci-fi shots from the likes of Alien, Moon and 2001 . Honestly, this film looks insanely gorgeous! To accompany that we have Max Sweiry on the score and oh my christ, he always impresses me but some of the music in this flick actually takes hold of the screen and steals the scene!

Out now in the US and hitting UK shores in October, I advise you all to grab a copy of G-LOC as soon as possible. If you have been following along on this journey of the TPU with us, I guarantee you wont be disappointed. Top notch sci-fi with solid performances and an intriguing story. Yeah… G-LOC is a HUGE recommend!

Sadly, no one from G-Unit  is in this.

If you’re a story over action person, G-Loc might be the movie for you. It is a very wordy low-budget UK Sci-fi flick. It just wasn’t my keg of beer.

However, the little stick figure robot was pretty cool!

There's an ok concept here. A portal opens near earth connected to a worm hole leading to another solar system. Because earth is becoming inhabitable, a large group of humans travel through the portal to seek safer habitat. Years later, racism separates the two fractions of humans, into Earthers (those still on earth) and Rheans, (those on the other side of the portal. When one Earther boards a supply ship, he finds himself in battle with the sole surviving Rhean. The two must learn to work together to guide the ship to safety. I like the concept. However, most of the obstacles the two face feel derivative and lazy in execution. One particular sequence has the two needing to steer…

Oof. When film professors are teaching students the all important lesson of "show don't tell," this will be movie screened to students as an example of what NOT to do.

Boring, not shot well, and muddled. It's obvious the budget went into paying the actors and some VFX shots (very few), cause the rest of the movie looks crazy cheap. The part where she is fixing the ship in zero gravity is so cheap looking it's amazing it made the cut.

I sorta feel bad for the actors in this. My guess is they were duped into doing a very different movie than what this turned out to be.

Alana Polden

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I was oddly surprised with this one, it started off pretty slow but once you get to know the story line a bit more then its quite a good futuristic based sci-fi which everyone loves haha. The monsters and aliens were none at all just the untrust of fellow man always looking out for #1 (themselves 😒) but after all the grief and loss a better world is born with the rhean people and all is good in the world, a little annoyed that you don't actually get to see the other world but I guess it is low budget 😆

My expectations were set very low as I am going through a low budget sci-fi phase, but this surprised me. Very small cast, not much action, but quite touching in places, decent dialogue and not bad acting - mostly from Stephen Moyer, but I loved Tala Gouveia too.

Brian O.

Review by Brian O. ★★★

Halfway decent low budget sci-fi thriller featuring a fine performance from Stephen Moyer and okay ones from Casper Van Dien whose only role is being a menace and spot exposition. Tala Gouveia was alright during the action scenes but during the few sit-down dialogue moments is a bit questionable. At the very least the effects were passable while set design was basic and on the cheap side.

All in all, better than expected for a DTV flick.

‘G-Loc’ Review – A Portal into the Future that Exposes the Present

g loc movie review

With Earth virtually destroyed, Bran Marshall flees to the Rhea, a planet hostile to Earthlings. Escaping onto a Rhean supply ship, he finds the crew slaughtered, with the only survivor a female warrior named Ohsha. As the two try to kill one another, the ship is damaged by meteorites. Bran (Moyer) and Ohsha must join forces to salvage the craft before it impacts the planet below — and the humans that live there.

If our current civilization was somehow able to start over on a new planet, would anything change? Would we become more united as a human race or would continue with our inexcusable trend of hate? We’ve monopolized hate in recent years but oftentimes it comes down to where you’re from or what your skin looks like. All stemming from calculated subterfuge that we have all fell for and continue to feed into in some capacity. However, I like to think that the majority of us mean well and are trying to do better and want to do better. That said, Tom Paton’s  G-Loc  is a portal into the future that exposes the present. In recent years the talk of colonizing Mars has materialized into various actions from rovers to Mars One. With Earth’s future being uncertain due to our selfish human existence, the future of our species needs a plan b while we attempt to inform others that we need to save plan a (Earth). Unlike our reality, in this film, inhabiting a planet is the new norm and humanity must begin anew on Rhea. Unfortunately, migrating billions of people takes a very, very long time. It’s enough time for old habits to morph into extremely dangerous new ones.

No longer are border closings a thing, they close the planet now. Therein lies the film’s perspective. From the point of view of a white man that must leave Earth or die, he is viewed as lesser than by Rheans and is not welcome on the new plant. With lies being passed down about Earthers making them look villainous and repugnant, it’s something many disenfranchised people can relate to and sheds a light for those who don’t understand. Its social commentary on what refugees feel and experience is made very palatable and is laid out in a way that you have no choice but to understand. While it is a sci-fi film,  G-Loc  ultimately uses space to relay a greater message about humanity. Illustrating how we are all more similar than we are different no matter our birthplace. Nevertheless, the science, technology, and concept of the film definitely makes it a sci-fi resident. I enjoyed this film a great deal. With it’s messaging, chemistry, ambiance, and overall tone, I enjoyed the film a great deal. Watching it in a pitch-black room really gives the movie a deep-space feel. Its rewatchability is a medium-high.

Oh yeah, my interview with two stars of the film is down below.

Plot & Pace

The story follows Bran as he is determined to keep a promise he made to his daughter. He’s is seemingly floating through space as a refugee in a damaged spacecraft with his holographic companion, Edison. They stumble upon a supply ship that initially appears abandoned. After discovering some dead bodies on board, Bran quickly realizes there is danger near and must survive in order to reach his destination. Shortly after he has an altercation with a Rhean named Ohsha. While trying to find common ground, the real threat is asleep in a chamber and is motivated to stop them at all costs. The Earther and Rhean must now put aside their differences and save thousands of people as well as themselves. I thought the pacing of the film felt like an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation . It was calm and quiet as you are absorbing your surroundings, like floating in space. Not long after, something is amiss and all hell breaks loose.

g loc movie review

Characters & Chemistry

The actors do a fantastic job embodying the story and relaying its message. Bran ( Stephen Moyer) is determined to continue living and migrate to the newly inhabited planet. Moyer is able to add perspective to the plight of refugees that may be more palatable coming from him. Paired with Ohsha (Tala Gouveia) who is gravely misinformed, the two unveil the complexities and injudicious actions that are prevalent in the conversation of immigration. Decker (Casper Van Dien), like Bran, is motivated by family but the two have very different ways of achieving their goals. Their goals are common, perspectives are different, but there’s only one correct way to see change and live.

G-LOC cast, creator talk building a new sci-fi franchise from scratch…and space immigration

Stephen Moyer and Talla Gouveia in G-LOC

Credit: Lionsgate

Framing an immigration story in a sci-fi movie set in Earth’s distant future might sound like a challenge, but the close bond between the cast and creative mind behind G-LOC made it seem easy (and like appointment viewing for the film itself) today at Comic-Con@Home .

Moderated by SYFY WIRE’s very own Jacob Oller , writer/director Tom Paton gathered around the online campfire with stars Stephen Moyer ( True Blood ), Casper Van Dien ( Starship Troopers ), Tala Gouveia ( Scream Street ), and John Rhys-Davies (the Indiana Jones and  Lord of the Rings  franchises) to reflect on how they made the relatively small-budget space movie full of big ideas — all while making from scratch a believable sci-fi lore-verse that might just have some staying power.

“It’s a really well-written script — and most of the sci-fi I see these days is so badly written, so angst-filled and terminally boring,” said Rhys-Davies , adding that Paton’s layered story of fleeing from loss — all while harboring personal prejudices — rises above conventional science fiction movie tropes.

That’s by design, said Paton, who created G-LOC ’s story setting with an eye for deep detail. From inventing a new language to crafting a distinctive physical look and feel of the strange new world of Rhea, it’s all done in the service of grounding its human characters. “I like the idea when you build a fleshed-out world,” explained Paton, adding that seeing human pressures through new eyes lies at the movie’s emotional core. “I can’t tell a story about immigration as an immigrant, because I’m not one. But I can do it by putting myself in their shoes.”

Moyer plays Bran, who’s fleeing Earth (like many others) as the planet becomes increasingly uninhabitable. He’s lost his family, and as he travels to Rhea to seek a new future, it becomes clear he harbors deep grudges against the natives for being collectively responsible.

Complicating matters is an 18-year time lapse that awaits any human who’s arriving on Rhea for the first time. That makes potential enemies for Bran of the planet’s human occupants who all arrived before him — and puts him at odds with Ohsha, Gouveia’s Rhean character, at least at first. “It’s these two characters… who have a very strong idea of what other people are about,” Gouveia said. “They kind of want to just kill each other a lot,” before necessity — and unexpected events (no spoilers!) force them to unite.

“I was just really impressed by the scope of what [Paton] tries to do within one film, which is talk about fatherly and daughterly love, and how far a father will go for the love of his wife who is lost,” said Moyer. “But also peppered in there is prejudice — and in Bran’s mind, the reason his wife has been taken from him is because of the people on this planet… so he’s prejudiced against everybody from Rhea, and he is almost immovable.”

Paton said he incorporated ideas from the actors themselves to add unexpected layers to what began as a more single-minded story. He credited Moyer with adding new dimension to the father-daughter story arc;  Van Dien for volunteering his body for a falling stunt that even the stunt double didn’t see coming; and Rhys-Davies with giving a completely impromptu speech near the end of filming that “was way better than anything I could ever write.” It’s a moment, he added, that even brought Paton’s 81-year-old dad near tears when the director shared the movie with his father.

Paton said he’s already got ideas for exploring G-LOC as a new sci-fi franchise, perhaps one that could stretch its legs as an episodic TV series. That, of course, depends on the movie’s success when it debuts next month, but he’s already got a growing compendium of Rhean language and other cultural waystones that the franchise definitely could grow into.

Whether there’s more G-LOC in our sci-fi future, it’s evident that this first film created a definite camaraderie between Paton and the cast. Rhys-Davies even got the panel sidetracked with a hilarious (yet genuinely awesome) home tour of artifacts he’s collected, from a signed stage photo of Victorian actor Sir Henry Irving, to a piece of ancient Egyptian mummy cloth — and for a minute, everyone appeared to forget there was even a panel going on at all. (Scroll to around the 22:40 marker in the panel video above to see what we mean.)

“Filmmaking is such fun,” Rhys-Davies quipped. “I’m a 76 year-old man — and I get to play!”

Named for the loss of consciousness induced by intense g-forces, Lionsgate's  G-LOC arrives for Aug. 11 on DVD, digital, and on-demand.

Lionsgate provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

With Earth virtually destroyed, Bran Marshall (STEPHEN MOYER) flees to Rhea, a planet hostile to Earthlings. Escaping onto a Rhean supply ship, he finds the crew slaughtered, with the only survivor a female warrior named Ohsha (TALA GOUVEIA). As the two try to kill one another, the ship is damaged by meteorites. Bran and Ohsha must join forces to salvage the craft before it impacts the planet below — and the humans who life there.

is a low budget but still satisfying sci-fi thriller that features a fine performance from Stephen Moyer whom I recognize from and his co-stars is okay, including Tala Gouveia a fairly unknown talent to me, though the one dramatic scene she was a bit questionable, though not sure if that’s on her or the writing and direction. The film also features Casper Van Dien as the primary antagonist and mostly is on the attack with a bit of exposition to explain his actions while the great John Rhys-Davies is more of a cameo with only 5-minutes of screen time in one location.

The film was written and directed by Tom Paton, marking his fifth feature and for what I assume was a minimum budgeted flick, did an okay job with what he had, including some less than ideal production and set designs, although perhaps on par with plenty of non- sci-fi shows. On the plus side, I did think the visual effects weren’t half bad and all in all, found the film as a whole to be entertaining and worthy of checking out.

Included is (21:41) featurette and the .
Lionsgate releases onto DVD presented with a 16×9 enhanced 2.39 widescreen aspect ratio and even though it is standard def and not quite as sharp, found this to look rather good with well balanced colors with minimal amount of pixilation. The included Dolby Digital 5.1 was even more impressive providing not only clear dialogue but some major depth for the action sequences, putting to the test the LFE channel.
Overall, is an entertaining low budget science fiction thriller that’s far from great but found Stephen Moyer giving a solid performance and the visual effects were more than passable, making this worth a rental.

  2. G-Loc Movie Review

In G-LOC, Bran Marshall (Stephen Moyer) has just fled Earth, a planet that's growing increasingly colder and inhospitable. Struggling with the losses of his wife and daughter, he's trying to reach the planet Rhea, a planet of former Earthlings who began leaving Earth 528 years prior. However, Rheans are now hostile to new arrivals from Earth.

  5. 'G-LOC' Review

There is a lot to unpack in G-LOC, in terms of story and what - on the face of things - seems like a fight for survival in space. 7. G-Loc (2020)

The concept had great potential, however, the follow through of bringing the story to life completely failed. Limited special effects, only 8 cast members, stiff acting, awful dialogue and limited sets make this film a total disaster. The fact that this film is released on the cinema circuit baffles the brain.

That said, Tom Paton's G-Loc is a portal into the future that exposes the present. In recent years the talk of colonizing Mars has materialized into various actions from rovers to Mars One. 12. G-LOC

G-LOC is perhaps his most ambitious movie so far, being a pure sci-fi movie set mostly aboard space-ships. In G-LOC, the Earth is about to die. Humans are fleeing to another world called Rhea but thanks to complications with space-travel and time-dilation, the humans on that world aren't keen on a regular flood of refugees.
