Mini Marketing Case Studies: 8 lessons for effective branding

For many direct response and conversion-focused marketers, branding can feel amorphous. These marketers are generally focused on direct results and have no patience for woolly metrics like brand sentiment or positive associations.

To gauge branding’s effect on conversion metrics, MECLABS Institute has run branding experiments on landing pages (MECLABS is the parent organization of MarketingSherpa). Here are two examples.

In one experiment, a lightly branded landing page had 40% higher conversion than a non-branded landing page.

But in another experiment, a fully branded landing page experienced a 34% decrease in conversion when tested against a lightly branded landing page.

So branding is a woolly beast to master. Done well, simply adding the brand to the exact same marketing collateral can drive a significant increase in conversion. However, done poorly, you’ll be shooting your marketing in the proverbial foot.

In this article, we’ll provide mini-case studies of successful branding to spark your own ideas.

Lesson #1: Brands shouldn’t travel in packs

Humans are pack animals. We’re social creatures. We can’t help but look at others and try to keep up with the Joneses.

I’ve been in meetings before when I see something on a company’s website, ask how they came up with it and was told, “Well, we saw the industry leader doing it.”

Don’t just follow and copy the branding of your industry’s leader, or you’ll create yet another Why Bother Brand .

Take C-SPAN for example (which stands for Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network). There are many cable news channels trying to make politics exciting — with dynamic exploding graphics packages, and tickers moving all over the screen screaming “breaking news”, and talking heads screaming at each other about whatever side of the rhetoric they are paid to represent.

Not C-SPAN.

When I was a Page in the U.S. House of Representatives in high school, my family back in Florida would watch C-SPAN when they missed me. Because it was literally just a camcorder aimed at the House floor, and they could see me walking around all day or opening the door for the Speaker.

It would have been easy for C-SPAN to mimic its competitors when it launched a brand refresh to mark its 40 th anniversary. But instead of looking outward, the brand tried to learn more about itself.

“The challenge was to ensure that the essence of C-SPAN — what makes them so iconic — remained. After absorbing their existing research, we conducted internal and external interviews with stakeholders on the Hill [Capitol Hill], the media, and C-SPAN’s funders,” said Lauren Leva, VP, Marketing Services, Grafik , an agency that led the re-branding for C-SPAN.

“The team seemed genuinely intrigued and motivated by the fact that we’re different, and we felt good that they were paying us so much attention and adjusting their efforts to match our interests and needs,” said Peter Kiley, VP Communications, C-SPAN.

Based on the research, the unifying theme “Your Unfiltered View of Government” was adopted and introduced to remind viewers that C-SPAN offered a unique view into government.

“In a time with so much dissension in the media and people choosing sides, there was universal agreement that C-SPAN is more relevant today than ever before. This was a good opportunity for C-SPAN to showcase their position right down the middle as a trusted resource,” Leva said.

The unfiltered branding approach was communicated through advertising with a headline like, “40 years on the Hill, and we have yet to take a side.”

Merchandising was even created to communicate the new brand message with, for example, a hat that read “Make Up Your Own Mind” and a coffee mug that stated “#Unfiltered.”

The campaign garnered over a quarter of a million viewers in the first two weeks of the campaign as #cspan40 trended on Twitter.

“C-SPAN was recognized as one of the three finalists in Brandweek’s rebranding category for campaigns,” said Marty Dominguez, VP Marketing, C-SPAN. “Although it wouldn’t be solely attributable to rebranding, we’ve had a banner year in terms of growth. Increased engagement and number of followers on social media platforms has exceeded all of our expectations for growth this year.”

Lesson #2: People don’t care about your brand, they care about what it can do for them

All of marketing can be explained by “Seinfeld.” In one episode, Jerry buys his dad The Wizard electric organizer. His dad doesn’t care about an electric organizer, but when he hears that he can use it to calculate tips — that impresses him.

Don’t make your brand all about your product and company. Nobody cares about that. They care what your brand can do for them. They care, for example, that your company can help them “Think Different.”

While this is true for every product and service, it tends to be especially challenging for tech companies.

DeSantis Breindel conducted a series of workshops, surveys and interviews across a digital security hardware provider’s global offices, and discovered an opportunity in the market.

“Security competitors were good at describing what they provided — trust, simplicity — but few explained why this benefited clients. They left the client to make that cognitive leap. VASCO could stand out by emphasizing what their software empowered clients to do,” said Howard Breindel, Co-CEO, DeSantis Breindel .

The previous visual brand told a hardware story.

“The methodology challenged everyone involved to think beyond the product features and functionality and to consider the broader business benefits, which were discovered and confirmed during interviews with our customers, partners, analysts and employees,” said Mary Ellen Power, Vice President, Marketing, OneSpan (the company’s new brand name, you’ll see why below).

Before the market could get behind this message, however, VASCO’s own employees would have to. “We discovered a serious divide between VASCO and eSignLive (a recent acquisition) employees. It became clear that a new name, a new brand architecture and internal engagement initiatives would be vital to uniting the company,” Breindel said.

After an internal teaser campaign, a new name (OneSpan), brand and redesigned website were introduced. Internal brand education initiatives taught managers how to incorporate the brand into their teams’ day-to-day activities.

And the new branding emphasized customer benefits. For example, it could help banks create “a frictionless customer experience across channels.”

The previous messaging had highlighted the types of products offered. For example, “… two-factor authentication, transaction data signing, document e-signature and identity management …”

The messaging after the re-brand explained why potential prospects should care about these products. For example, “… so even the most regulated companies can drive bold digital transformation and deliver powerful digital interactions with their customers.”

The visual look and feel used interlocking circles to suggest OneSpan’s secure offerings and integrated platform.

The new tagline also emphasized the main benefit to the customer — “Be bold. Be secure.” The brand manifesto explained it as, “… For many businesses, especially in highly regulated industries, bold moves can seem daunting, if not impossible. We make the impossible possible for our clients, redefining what highly secured digital experiences can be …”

“With security underpinning OneSpan’s cloud platform, our clients have the confidence to make bold advances in their digital transformations because they do not have to compromise security when building great experiences that strengthen relationships with their own customers. That’s the connective tissue that unites all of our offerings, and that served as the crux of our brand story,” Power said.

Eight months after launch, OneSpan reported it had exceeded the high-end of financial guidance, with a 10% revenue increase over 2017.

 “We often find that companies are too focused on the what — the tangible products, solutions and services they offer — which holds them back from talking about the why — the higher purpose for why they exist, and what they ultimately enable for their clients,” Breindel said.

Lesson #3: The brand is a part of the times, not apart from the times

Strong brands stand the test of time. Brands like Colgate, HarperCollins, Brooks Brothers and Macy’s have been around since the 1800s. They are still strong today.

They have, of course, refreshed and updated with the times. That may be over long periods of social and societal change. Or it may be small or large changes in the zeitgeist. What are your customers going through? How has it affected their lives?  How does that affect their brand perception? And how should that impact how you communicate your brand?

One example — and it is hard to write an article about marketing these days and avoid this topic — is the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Empathy is just good business. Your partners and community are your greatest assets, and you should treat them as such,” said Dave Goldman, CEO & Co-Founder, Eliqs .

Eliqs is a rather unique food and beverage company. “Eliqs was built around the concept that linking the design community to the canned craft beverage space could create new business opportunities and help cure the beverage market of its plastic addiction,” Goldman said.

In normal days, that means working with freelance designers to create personalized custom brands of beer for corporate events, social events, weddings, bars, restaurants and hotels. But suddenly, those key constituencies found themselves shut down or without work.

So the company launched a campaign to brand beer for the COVID-19 era. It built an ecommerce store to sell the beer, paid full price for canned beverages from craft brewers, and donated 100% of profits split 50/50 between the freelance designers who made the can design and the WHO’s Solidarity Response Fund .

For example, one beer can designed by Carly Altieri borrowed the look of a disinfectant. The can used the Eliqs brand and dubbed the beer “Wash Your Hands.” Where product features normally go, the can listed “Stay Inside. Self Isolate. Drink Up.” And the brand promise was listed as “Kills 99.9% of Boredom.”

Eliqs offered 60 COVID-19 themed beer designs submitted from the freelance design community. “We were able to donate close to $7,000 to those hurting most,” Goldman said.

Travel booking platform CuddlyNest modified its logo in response to COVID-19. Typically the logo shows two birds flying close together.

The company also changed its tagline from “Browse. Book. Stay.” to “Plan Now, Stay Later.”

“While we are a travel company to our core, we want to encourage our guests to adhere to CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) policies and social distance, so we can all travel safely again soon,” said Jessica Armstrong, PR and Social Media Manager, CuddlyNest.

Lesson #4: The brand is what customers experience

You can make all the soothing color palettes and flat logos you want, but when it comes down to it, you can’t create the final word (or visual) on your brand. The customer decides what your brand really is. Your brand goes through a trust trial with the customer — every brand interaction shapes the customer’s perception of that brand.

Lessonly launched an interactive virtual event series to replace its in-person events and help customers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It was important for us to be seen as a helper to our customers and prospects instead of being too opportunistic. These events speak to the heart of Lessonly’s brand — to help people ‘Do Better Work.’ Our mission is to help people do better work so they can live better lives, and these events help further that mission. When people think of Lessonly, we want them to think of an experience in their career that helped them become better in some aspect of their life, whether that's work or personal,” said Katie Brunette, Director of Strategic Marketing, Lessonly.

The training software company dubbed its virtual event series Virtual Coffee Connections and Llama Lunches (after its mascot). To take care of customers and prospects, Lessonly even sent lunch egift cards and Starbucks egift cards using Sendoso before the events.

Lessonly generated an average attendance rate of 55% to the events across 12 events they conducted over a two-week period.

Lesson #5: Consider the URL

One of the most tangible ways customers will interact with your brand is your website’s URL. They will type it in, click on it, see it as a call-to-action at the end of print ads.

For startups, the cost of a URL can be a significant factor in an original brand creation or re-branding.

Desk Nibbles originally started as a platform that made it easy for companies to get snacks for the office.

But the team realized the two-year-old startup was helping companies with much more than just snacks, it had become a software platform that made it easy to order a bunch of other things (like office supplies), so a rebrand was in order.

They needed a name that did not just imply food, and one that could grow with the business as it expanded into new categories and created new solutions for customers. The .com also had to be reasonably priced.

“It took us months, but we finally decided on Hoppier after a constant barrage of Slack messages in our #Rebrand channel,” said Cassy Aite, Co-Founder & CEO, Hoppier . The domain only cost about $400, and the .ca domain was $1. So the new name was a fit, and a three-month rebranding project was launched.

Since the rebrand in early 2019, the company has had more than 300% annual revenue growth.

Lesson #6: Focus on your brand’s ideal customer

An effective value proposition isn’t just a general statement, it is focused on the ideal customer.

To align your company’s brand with its value proposition, the brand must be focused on the ideal customer as well. Otherwise, you will attract the wrong people to your company — people you can’t help profitably.

“When I launched my business a little under two years ago, I knew that I was providing a super-valuable service to small business owners. However, I struggled with articulating that value through my branding,” said Kendra J. Lewis, Founder, The Boss Architect . 

“Unfortunately, it was also attracting the wrong types of clients to my business — you know, the non-paying kind,” she said.

“The messaging attracted a lot of dabblers and hobbyists, and generally anyone who was just looking for quick ways to get money if they had bad personal credit,” she said.

Lewis went through a re-branding and focused on communicating a more business-level message versus a personal-level message. Gone was the image of her walking down the street on the homepage, replaced by Lewis in business settings. She replaced messaging like “even if your personal credit is not so great” with business language like “cash flow,” and she emphasized the separation between the personal and the business – “without touching your personal credit.”

She made the same changes to her lead magnet, going from language like “have lenders throwing cash at you” to “fund your operations like a big business.”

And she changed the company’s tagline from, “I help businesses get funding without using their personal credit at all” to “Let's get the money you need to bring your business to life.”

“The new messaging speaks more to established businesses that are looking for ways to uplevel their businesses as opposed to struggling with cash or personal credit,” Lewis said.

She also took a more benefits-based approach with her re-branding. “My pre-rebrand message focused solely on the ‘thing’ that I was actually doing as opposed to the value and benefits of what I was doing.  The sales copy focused on getting credit for your business without using personal credit, not why business credit was important, what you actually used business credit for, and why it's actually a strategy for business growth,” Lewis said.

This re-branding also led to a change in her social media strategy. “My organic strategy used to consist of posting click-bait type posts in groups, such as ‘Build Business Credit immediately without using personal credit,’” Lewis said.

With the re-branding, Lewis shifted her social media strategy and now produces benefits-based, informational posts that focus on the process, the results and the experience of working with her.

Before the rebrand, Lewis had only sold two high-ticket offers in the six months her business had been running.  In the first month after the new branding launched, she sold three high-ticket offers (a total of $10,000 in revenue). “Previously, my entire month of sales would cap out at $10,000. That month enabled me to double my revenue,” Lewis said.

“Don't brand prematurely, you need to be confident in yourself, your offers, and have real data from real clients before you invest in a brand,” Lewis advised. “If you can't sell it ugly, you won't be able to sell it pretty.”

Lesson #7: Every customer touchpoint is a branding opportunity

If you’ve got the budget for Super Bowl TV ads and double truck ads in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today — fantastic. Great way to get your brand out in the world.

But if you don’t have those resources, don’t think for one moment you can’t succeed in branding. Everything that touches the customer communicates your brand .

For example, id8 agency was working on a rebranding project for Carman Adventist School, a private Christian school in Marietta, Georgia.

After an initial analysis, id8 determined strong branding and positioning was needed, but it discovered another problem: The school was located on a heavily trafficked road — but hidden by a hill of kudzu — so no one knew it was there. Recognizing the huge potential of gaining brand impressions from street traffic, id8 recommended that the first task after creating a new brand for the school would be to design a large, bright, permanent outdoor sign and directional signs to the school that would be easily seen from the street.

After developing a strong brand through experiential design, Carman Adventist School experienced a 25% increase in enrollment from the previous year.

“With any rebranding project, taking the time to experience the customer journey first-hand, from the first touchpoint to the last time they interact with the brand, will provide monumental feedback and insights into how the business is represented to its customers. Experiential design is a process that helps shape a brand that connects your story with your audience in a meaningful way and produces substantial results,” said Kriston Sellier, President, id8.

Lesson #8: Create something worth branding

Most of the examples in this article focus on creating a distinctive brand for an already existing company or product.

But I leave you with this last point of inspiration — do something worth branding.

Sure you can create a slick brand identity for almost anything, but look beyond the brand elements you’re creating. Get to the core of the company, and make sure it is delivering true value and bringing something unique into the world.

That brings me to a gentleman named Iain Miller. “I have created a brand which is me; I am the world’s only professional sea stack climber,” Miller told me.

Miller has been able to create a clear exclusivity factor around his brand. “So many people and companies spend time and resources watching competitors. This then means they are following and trying to catch up rather than leading,” Miller said.

However, exclusivity is not enough for a value proposition to build a brand on. You need appeal as well.

Miller started by promoting the appeal of his local area — County Donegal in Ireland. “Star Wars came looking for a sea stack location, l showed them around and they filmed here at Malin Head,” Miller said.

“When branding something, its uniqueness can be an advantage as it can have little competition. But uniqueness is also a disadvantage as it can cause what you are branding to be little known. So in my case, I had to promote my area first and foremost to create the market into which I became the only player. Like most successful brands, it is the strength of its unique selling point and the difficulty in getting to market that prevents future competitors,” Miller said.

He then shifted to becoming the brand and promoting himself.

Miller is the owner of Unique Ascent , the company he built off of his brand. He guides people from all over the world up to the summits of sea stacks, he trains people to be mountain and rock-climbing guides, and he does tourism promotional work.

“Turning a hobby such as rock/sea stack climbing into a business is part of [a] professional strategy. People want to be trained by the best. Being the best or the perception of being the best is very much part of having authority, which is of course, simply good branding,” Miller said.

And if Iain can successfully brand sea stack climbing, you can create a powerful brand around research and product development. Or your freelance work. Or a crowdsourcing marketplace. Or however you, your client and/or your company add value to the world.

“It is possible to brand anything and brand it well. If I can take an unknown niche activity in an unknown part of the world and attract a global audience, then anything is indeed possible, especially when you consider all it cost me was time and very little financial cost,” he advised.

Plenty of companies have already proven how beneficial marketing case studies can be. They are the most popular form of self-promotional marketing used by marketing agency executives in the U.S. Additionally, 88% of surveyed B2B marketers say that customer case studies are considered to be their most impactful content marketing tactic.  

While chatting with a salesperson can be helpful, and even preferable for some, it’s clear that having marketing case studies on your website can be beneficial. Case studies answer potential customers’ questions, demonstrate success, build company-wide credibility, increase conversions , and most importantly, eliminate bias so your customer can make a confident decision to buy your product.

The use of marketing case studies is beneficial to companies of all sizes and customers of all backgrounds. Well-crafted marketing case studies provide potential customers with engaging content that excites them to buy your product.

They Tell a Relatable Story

Case studies often involve an interview with a customer that has had success using your product. Before choosing a customer for an interview, consider who you’re targeting. Your case studies should appeal to your buyer persona .

When your target customer feels connected to your case studies, they will feel more confident in their purchase.

Consider this: You’re buying a new software for your team. You have a few possible options in mind, so you head to their respective websites to do your own research. The first two options sound good on paper (or rather, on screen), but you want a solution you can really trust. Something that is preferably not written by the company itself.

The third site you go to has a landing page that includes a few case studies. One of the case studies features an interview with an employee at a company similar to yours. You listen to that person describe challenges that they faced prior to getting the software — challenges that sound a lot like the ones you and your team currently face. The interviewee then talks about the ways that their software purchase resolved their pain points.

Wouldn’t the case study you found on the third website make you feel confident that the software could help your team, too?  

The key to creating relatable case studies is considering your buyer personas. That means considering demographics, company size, industry, etc. and selecting a person that the majority of your potential customers will feel a connection.

They Demonstrate Success

Take a look at HubSpot’s case study landing page . Check out the wide range of case studies listed. Notice how these case studies cover all types of industries, a wide variety of locations, different company sizes, and more.

If there are so many companies using HubSpot — to solve a vast array of challenges — then wouldn’t you assume HubSpot has a solid product that you could trust, too?

Case studies demonstrate success by showing potential customers that current customers — who once had challenges similar to their own — solved their pain points by making a purchase.

They Help Build Credibility

Credibility is what gives the people around you a reason to trust you.

For example, let’s say you’re looking at a product on Amazon , and you scroll down to the customer review section. You find that almost everyone has given the product a five-star rating or has written a positive comment about their experience. These comments and ratings build credibility for that product and brand.

Marketing case studies help your company build credibility. They also convince prospects to give your product a try when they see how many people already trust you, love your products, and believe in your mission.

They Help You Convert Leads

Case studies are a bottom-of-funnel strategy that will help you convert more leads . If a prospect is on the fence about your product, case studies are the marketing technique that will push them closer to that purchase decision.

For example, if a potential customer visits your website and they watch (or read) multiple case studies explaining the ways that customers have had success with your product, then they too may feel excited to become a customer.  

If that same prospect just left your competitor’s website where there were no case studies, your solution then becomes an easy sell … and your competitor becomes obsolete.

Marketing case studies retain value over long periods of time — meaning the same study has the potential to convert leads for years . Unless you have a revamp or a complete update of the product being referred to in your case study, it can remain on your website as long as you see fit.

Now that we’ve reviewed the reasons why you should have case studies on your site, you might be wondering how to actually create a marketing case study.

First, it’s no secret that video content is more effective than written content. So, if you can create a video case study, do it. If not, be sure to include images throughout your written case study to break up the text and provide visual stimulation for readers.

Second, remember one size does not fit all when it comes to creating case studies. They vary in length, format, content, and style based on what experience you want to provide for your potential customers.

Keep this in mind as we go through the following example … some of the content here might work perfectly in your case study, and some might need to be modified.

1. Choose Your Case Study Format

To determine which format you want to use for your case study, think about what type of content would be most beneficial for your buyer personas. You should consider what challenges your buyer personas might face, what types of industries they work in, their locations, and their business demographics.

Two commonly used marketing case study formats to consider include an exposé and a transcription.

An exposé is an interview technique that covers specific details about a topic, event, or individual. If you look back at the case studies on the HubSpot landing page , you’ll see the exposé format in action. The director, or author, is conducting the interview, leading conversation, and asking the interview subject questions about their interactions with HubSpot.

Tip: When you’re recording a video interview for your case study, make sure the interview subject repeats your question before providing an answer.

For example, if you ask them, “What challenge did our product help you overcome?” you don’t want them to simply say “organizational challenges.” The editing process will cut your voice out of the interview, and their response won’t make sense. Instead, make sure they answer all questions as a complete statement such as, “This product helped us overcome several organizational challenges.”

Transcription

This is a simpler case study format. It’s a transcription of an interview with your customer , meaning there is typically a significant amount of text for potential customers to read through.

Be sure to include the interview questions throughout this type of case study so readers know exactly what the interview subject is referring to. Lastly, feel free to pair your transcription with a series of images or even video to break up the text.

2. Conduct the Interview

The interview is the most important part of the case study … and quality matters. Strong interviews and videos take time . It’s not unusual to conduct a one to two-hour interview just to get a solid two minutes of video to use in your case study.

During the interview, you should ask your customers about their lives prior to purchasing your product, what it was like to acquire your product, and how their company’s future has changed because of their purchase.

If possible, record the interview. If not, be sure to use a transcription or audio recording device to ensure accurate quotes and statements throughout your case study.

Here are some sample questions for you to consider:

Ask about the customer’s life prior to your product.

  • Who are you? What is your title? What does your company do?
  • What challenges were you experiencing that made you realize you needed a solution?
  • Why was finding a solution to this challenge important?

Ask what it was like finding and purchasing your product.

Capture general commentary — information that anyone could understand — from your interview subject in this section so potential customers can relate no matter their background or experience.

  • How did you find our product? What was your experience like while purchasing our product?
  • Ask about your customer’s criteria during their search for a solution. What was crucial versus what was nice to have?
  • What were the results that came from using our product? How did our product solve your challenge?
  • Ask for numerical results and hard data. Get proof of these from your interview subject (or even your own company if you have records).
  • What were you able to start doing as a result of our product working for you? What are the intangible results of our product?

Ask about the impact that the product has had on your customer’s life.

  • How did our product change your view of your company’s future?
  • What are you excited about moving forward?
  • What would your future be like without our product?

After conducting your interview, it’s time to actually put your case study together.

Edit your interview down to the most important, relevant information for potential customers to learn about your product. Cut that hour-long video interview down to a minute or two of the best clips.

If your interview is going to become a written case study, include the very best quotes. Make it easy to read by separating your information with the help of headers, bulleted lists, images , and bold or italicized text.

3. Incorporate Your Case Study in Your Marketing and Sales Processes

Determine how to best use the case study in your marketing and sales processes. Here are a few ideas:

Create a case study library.

By creating a case study library on a landing page — similar to the HubSpot landing page or this page by Fractl — you provide your potential customers with an easy way to learn about your products and company as a whole.

A case study library or landing page will prevent potential customers and leads from having to dig around on your website for any product information they’re searching for. If this information is not easily accessible, they could lose interest, become frustrated, leave your website, or even find an alternative solution on a competitor’s site.

Case study landing pages and libraries also help build credibility, look official, and typically bring in a lot of traffic — both through people searching for your company’s website and organic search.

According to Fractl , their case study landing page is the second most-visited page on their entire website. Additionally, it is their fourth most-visited page through organic search. Lastly, they’ve seen a huge boost in converting visitors to leads since the creation of their case study landing page — half of Fractl’s leads view at least one of their case studies.  

Surround your case studies with social proof.

If so many people are saying it’s true, then it must be true — this is how companies use the theory of social proof to their advantage.

Social proof theories say that people let the actions, behaviors, and beliefs of those around them impact their own. For example, some theories say most people would answer “yes” to the question: “If all of your friends jumped off of a bridge, would you?”

Social proof — or in this case, your friends all jumping off of the bridge — influences people to make decisions based on the expectations and behaviors of the people around them, even if their decision would be different if they were alone.

Companies use social proof in the form of customer reviews, logo walls (that is, the logos of companies that have purchased their products), or long-form videos. Social proof acts as a supplement to the information in a case study.

By showing potential customers how your products have changed the lives of other individuals, teams, and companies, prospects are more likely to buy into your claims and believe your product could help them, too.

Add product overviews to the case study section on your site.

If you’re editing down your case study interview and realize your interviewee said something vague or made a comment that a potential customer may not necessarily understand, you can add a product overview or reference guide next to that case study.

For example, imagine HubSpot is conducting a case study interview and an interview subject goes into detail about the specific functions of Workflows . A potential customer may not know much about HubSpot’s Workflows, so a detailed discussion about their features may not be relatable and could even raise some questions.

By including an overview or description of Workflows next to the case study where the product was mentioned, HubSpot can provide clarity for the viewer. You will also avoid making potential customers feel confused or uninterested.

Keep your sales team in the loop.

Once your case study is complete, you should notify your sales team so they can use them when reaching out to potential customers. They will be able to incorporate this information into their sales enablement kits — which include the technologies, processes, and content that allows them to sell efficiently and effectively.

By learning about the ways that real customers are using and benefiting from the products they are selling, sales teams can share relatable stories with potential customers and leads. These will help build trust and, most importantly, increase sales.

To help your sales team narrow the vast amount of information that typically comes from an in-depth case study, provide them with key takeaways that they can share with potential customers and leads. These key takeaways should include information about the interviewee’s background, title, and experience level and details about their company’s size, industry, and potential annual revenue.

This data will allow the sales team to tailor the information they share with potential customers and leads, organize it for future conversations, and make more efficient and impactful sales.

4. Determine How Many More Case Studies You Need

As I mentioned, every company is different and every product they sell is unique. Not every company will need the same number of case studies on their website to have an impact. To determine the right number of case studies for your company, think about the following tips.

Cover all of your bases.

A good rule of thumb is to have at least one to three case studies for each of your buyer personas.

To do this, cover a range of industries and types of companies, and interview people of different backgrounds, titles, demographics, and experience levels. You should make sure there is something for everyone who visits your website.

If your company targets customers all over the world and has offices located around the globe, this is especially important to consider. Think about what works for your buyer personas, your company’s location, and your goals when deciding how many case studies you need.

Sometimes, less is more.

Having an extensive list of case studies sounds like something everyone should have … right?

Not always. Think about it this way — if your company is on the smaller side and is relatively new, there’s a chance you haven’t given your customers much time with your products yet. There is also a chance that you don’t yet have a wide range of customers.

If your company then takes the time to create dozens of case studies, potential customers may feel you are being inauthentic and even unconvincing. It may also be a waste of resources that you can’t quite afford as a new business.

To be effective, try to make every one of your case studies relatable and helpful for your personas. Cover multiple use cases in each of your case studies when possible. You’ll not only simplify your own life, but you also keep your case study library clean and impactful.

Case studies are powerful marketing tools. They tell your potential customers relatable stories, demonstrate your company’s success, and help you build credibility. Case studies will help you reach your audience in a way that no sales pitch, email, newsletter, or advertisement will.

Plus, if your company made such a positive impact on a customer that they want to share their experience with others, why not broadcast that story?

This is where a brand will focus on marketing their company/brand name as a whole. They don’t focus on any specific element of their brand, services or products. Their goal is to improve brand awareness through marketing their name alone.

Individual Branding

This is where a brand will focus on a specific element of their brand. This could range from an individual product to a service, or even a person. This form of branding moves away from overall brand marketing and narrows its focus towards a specific element.

Attitude Branding

This is where the brand markets the idea or emotion behind their brand rather than the name or product. A brand will align itself with this idea, emotion or feeling and market their association with this factor.

Brand Extension

Brand extension is when a brand markets a sub-brand rather than the overall parent brand. Many big brands are owned by even bigger brands, but they don’t market the larger parent brand.

Private Label

Not all brands or companies create their own products. The term private label refers to products that are produced for multiple brands from one creator. Private labels offer an in-house version of commonly produced products, and a brand can market this as a lower price alternative, for example.

Red Bull – Company Brand Name

Red Bull is somewhat of a powerhouse in the world of brand marketing. Their company-based brand marketing strategy is one of the most complete but does require a lot of budget. Running F1 teams and sponsoring extreme sports athletes doesn’t come cheap but it can lead to virality.

What Has Red Bull Done?

Red Bull has always known their target market and have found a way to communicate with them. Their initial brand marketing involved finding out where their target market would hang out and hand out free products: increasing brand awareness and word-of-mouth exposure.

Now, with a much larger budget, they still perform the same style of marketing. They know where their target market will be online or what sports they enjoy and position themselves there. Be it an F1 race or an 18 year old university student looking at skydiving content on YouTube.

What Can We Learn From Red Bull?

Understanding your target market will help you position your brand correctly. Their brand is so well known most will associate it name with their favourite sport before a canned energy drink.

Apple – Individual

Apple has always pushed their products before their brand name. Hosting large expos to launch a new product and advertising their latest phone before looking to raise brand awareness. The ‘Shot on Iphone’ ad campaigns are a great example of their marketing efforts pushing the quality and ability of their products.

What Have Apple Done?

Apple focuses on the consumer within its marketing efforts and aligns this with their product. Their push towards innovation is clear from their slogan ‘Think Different’. They look to expose their product strengths and do this through TV advertising and tech influencers.

If we’re looking to market an individual part of our brand, like a product, it’s important that we first understand the benefits. By understanding the benefits we can market these and draw attention to the selling factors. Ensuring the individual element embodies the overall brand message.

Air Jordan – Brand Extension

One of the most recognisable brand extensions is Air Jordan. A sub-brand of Nike, Air Jordans have become some of the most successful and sought after shoes in the market. They currently sell somewhere around $5 billion worth of shoes each year.

What Have Air Jordan Done?

Nike aligned their product with an up and coming basketball superstar. They also moved away from the Nike brand name as, at the time, it wasn’t ‘cool’ within the basketball scene. By focusing on the brand extension, Air Jordan, they were able to market it alongside the athlete.

What Can We Learn From Air Jordan?

Brand extensions don’t need to follow the same brand message as the parent brand. They can be unique and move away from what would be expected of the parent brand, giving them freedom to push in other directions to reach a wider potential customer base.

Aldi – Private Label

Aldi is a European supermarket that has found great success with their private label range. In fact, 90% of Aldi’s products are private label and, as the majority of their products are in-house, they’re able to control price and availability. This flexibility gives them an edge over their larger supermarket competitors.

What Have Aldi Done?

Aldi have run a number of brand marketing campaigns, however, their focus on the quality of their private label stands out. The ‘I also like this one’ campaign is a great example of how they compare themselves to others in the industry. Backing it up with consumer data, they are able to stand out as just as good but less expensive.

If you’re a private label brand, it’s important to know your strengths and weaknesses. Perform market research to gather relevant data and market using this information. Part of the 4 Ps of marketing is ‘price’, so it’s important to consumers that the price is competitive.

Jeep – Attitude Branding

Jeep brand themselves alongside the idea of adventure. Jeep’s marketing campaigns are all focused around the idea of the car being a tool to achieve adventures. This is a great example of how a brand can align themselves with an idea and brand the idea with the product.

Jeep have understood their target market and have in some ways built their target market around their products. They have positioned themselves through advertisement and product placements to be recognised alongside an attitude.

But the business value of these maps is limited because they fail to link a brand’s market position to business performance metrics such as pricing and sales. Other marketing tools measure brands on yardsticks such as market share, growth rate, and profitability but fail to take consumer perceptions into consideration.

In this article, Ivey Business School’s Niraj Dawar and Charan K. Idea in Brief

The problem.

Companies have long used perceptual maps to understand how consumers feel about their brands relative to competitors’ and to develop brand positions. The C-D map links perception and performance in a new way. Marketers have always had to juggle two seemingly contradictory goals: making their brands distinctive and making them central in their category. These brands shape category dynamics, including consumer preferences, pricing, and the pace and direction of innovation. Distinctive brands, such as Tesla in cars and Dos Equis in beer, stand out from the crowd and avoid direct competition with widely popular central brands.

5 keys to crafting a killer marketing case study

Count me among the content creators who entered this line of work out of a strong affinity for storytelling. While it’s not exactly the same thing as plotting out a swashbuckling adventure on the high seas or editing dialogue for a heady psychological thriller, writing a marketing case study still entails plenty of drama and suspense. Even better, it can be a highly effective component of your overall marketing plan.

What is a marketing case study and why is it important?

Simply put, a marketing case study is a story that helps your prospective clients understand, from the beginning to the end and in a tangible way, how you helped a current or previous client accomplish their goals. It’s a crucial tool for helping sales reps demonstrate to their leads how your company can produce real results.

As part of your larger content marketing strategy, it helps middle-of-funnel and bottom-of-funnel leads to connect your products and services with real-world outcomes. If you’re able to highlight some of your better-known customers in the process, a marketing case study can also bolster your brand.

What separates a good case study from a great case study?

A good case study gets its point across, but a great case study does so with style.

Keep in mind, that doesn’t mean it always has to be flashy or highly visual, though aesthetically pleasing design can be a big bonus.

Here, by style, we mean that the case study:

  • Features specific details and inspiring outcomes that enhance a strong narrative.
  • Communicates in a way that is relevant to its intended audience.
  • Presents the potential customer with a clear opportunity for further engagement.

As part of a holistic marketing strategy, a great case study is also an instrumental asset for ongoing, targeted campaigns.

How do you create a compelling case study?

The principal ingredients for a compelling case study aren’t that different from other forms of content marketing.

Great case studies require you to:

  • Conduct thoughtful research.
  • Sculpt raw intel into a captivating story.
  • Frame the content in a way that’s certain to generate interest.

For further detail, we can break this process down into the five key steps necessary for producing a first-rate marketing case study.

1. Know the product or service and its place in the market

Here’s a typical scenario. You get an email from the Vice President of Sales. She’s overjoyed about a recent customer success story, and she wants to know if you can create a case study based on it.

What’s the first thing you do?

Our recommendation is to make sure you have a firm grasp of everything about the product or service that the case study will highlight. Well, technically, the first thing you should probably do is respond to that email. And when you do, don’t forget to ask for clarification if it isn’t clear what product will be central to your marketing case study.

To brush up on the product, service or offering, take a closer look at materials like:

  • Existing sales sheets and landing pages.
  • Related social media posts or email campaigns.
  • Internal product documents.

Keep in mind how this case study will play into ongoing marketing campaigns and efforts. Also, take a moment to examine how the type of customer you’re about to profile will map up with strategies for targeting specific personas.

2. Line up an interview with the client’s resident brand champion

A strong case study often involves the enthusiastic participation of individuals from the client company who are responsible for managing the vendor partnership. If you can schedule some time to talk to this person, you’ll benefit for two reasons:

  • You’ll hear the story from their angle, which can add color, texture and truly valuable proof points.
  • You’ll benefit from their infectious gratitude for the product. Too often, content creators have to rely on a set of well-crafted pitches instead of seeing the real-world impact of their products.

That said, sometimes this step is easier said than done. Why?

First of all, your clients may be busy. See if you can reach them at off-peak times or when they have some more flexibility in their schedule

Secondly, nondisclosure agreements are the norm in some industries. Customer contacts can be wary about answering questions, even if they know the company’s name and logo won’t be used. Try to reassure these clients from the beginning by showing them examples of other case studies you’ve done.

No matter what difficulties you encounter, there are always strategies you can follow to ask for reviews, testimonials and other support for your marketing case study. Some of our tried-and-true techniques include:

  • Automating as much of the process as possible: Work with the sales or products teams to build feedback into the customer acquisition and retention processes.
  • Focus on top customers: Emphasize high-profile clients that will bring greater brand awareness to your company or highly engaged partners who are eager to sing your praises.
  • Emphasize the cross-promotional aspect of marketing case studies: Some companies need a reminder that this could be further exposure for their brand and additional content they could share in their own campaigns.

3. Gather details and comb through the data

Interviewing client contacts for a marketing case study is an art unto itself. Even the most excited and energetic sources will need some prompting and guidance in order to give you the material you need.

As such, we find that it’s helpful to start the conversation with a basic structure for your case study content in mind. A rough outline should look something like this:

  • Background information about the client.
  • A problem that the client experienced. Keep in mind, some people will need reassurance that the case study won’t paint the organization in a negative light.
  • An exploration of how your product or service helped address the problem.
  • Results from the implementation of this new solution.
  • A description of how the client will proceed forward with this new experience under their belts.

Remember to listen carefully and remain flexible, but focused, during the interview. Put your reporter’s hat on to ask leading questions based on new information. At the same time, if your subject is particularly chatty, you may occasionally need to pull the interview back to its intended purpose.

While you’re taking notes, be sure to highlight any particularly noteworthy or emotional lines as they come up. This can be a real timesaver when you’re looking for pull quotes later.

In addition to the interview, ask for project documentation that can help you understand the scope of the client’s problem and the impact of the support provided by your company. Oftentimes, clients will have metrics that they’re eager to share. After all, they’ve probably already reported these results to internal stakeholders. Even if that’s not the case, ask for any relevant recent reports or raw data you could explore for some brag-worthy numbers.

4. Find the story

Not everybody is an expert storyteller. Some people are prone to add in irrelevant details, deliver information out of order or even to leave out important context. There’s a good chance that you’ll have to rearrange some of the information you learned during your client call. You may also have to conduct additional research or excise some out-of-place meanderings.

Internal subject matter experts can also help you refine the narrative arc for your marketing case study. They’ll clue you into the strategies they use for selling this service and supporting its implementation. Plus, they’ll be able to share their insights about questions that prospective clients might ask.

Make sure that the client is at the center of the story, but don’t be shy about highlighting the contributions of your own organization.

5. Highlight proof points

The story comes first, but proof points can transform your marketing case study from a possible puff piece into an exhilarating example for your target audience.

Whatever claims you make in the text, you should be able to back them up with evidence. At the same time, the proof points you do use should align with the bigger picture.

Obviously, facts, figures and statistics make for some of the most compelling kinds of evidence. However, sometimes the data isn’t in yet. In other scenarios, the qualitative advantages that have been gained are more important than percentages or points on a line graph.

In these situations, quotations and brief customer testimonials can provide additional support for the claims you’ve made.

But how do you handle quotes? Here are a few guidelines to follow:

  • Where possible, use a direct quote that is original, interesting and engaging. Think about claims that would only be credible if they came straight from the speaker.
  • You may have leeway to finesse the speaker’s language. Resist the temptation to wordsmith their speech except in cases that are truly confusing. Informal expressions can add a touch of authenticity.
  • Some situations may require you to write the quote and then have it approved by the person to whom it will be attributed. Try to capture the nuances of their perspective as best you can, and never run the quote without getting a final confirmation.

Consumers say the home depot is the most culturally inclusive brand.

Earlier this year, the Association for National Advertisers’ (ANA) Alliance for Inclusive and Multicultural Marketing (AIMM), in partnership with the Cultural Inclusion Accelerator (CIA) announced the rankings for the Most Culturally Inclusive Brands for 2023.

The results came from evaluations of top advertising spenders from a diverse cross-section of more than 80,000 consumers including people of different races and ethnicities, abilities, and sexual orientation.

Of the 120 brands included in the evaluations, The Home Depot was named the Most Culturally Inclusive Brand. Dove and Walt Disney World took second and third place spots among the general population surveyed.

Very often, brands who’ve been inconsistent with their commitment and efforts in inclusive marketing, have struggled to tie it to business results.

The brands in this study that consumers awarded the most culturally inclusive, have found success with inclusive marketing in a tangible way that not only allows them to better serve a more diverse customer base, but it also enables them to approve upon key performance metrics.

Some of those metrics the evaluated by CIA’s Cultural Insights Impact Measure, include both relevance and effectiveness in :15 and :30 ad creative, while incorporating cultural celebrations, positive reflections, and authenticity.

The brands that performed at the top for consumers in this study saw increases in key performance indicators such as 69% in purchase intent, 67% in brand trust, 49% in brand affinity, and 43% brand recommendations.

CIA’s findings from this study also showed that brands that are perceived by consumers to authentically portray their culture positively, achieve superior levels of brand growth, five times higher purchase intent, and 16 times higher brand trust.

Consumers from underrepresented and underserved communities have spoken. They have and will continue to reward the brands that take the time to include them in a relevant way.

How The Home Depot Became A Culturally Inclusive Brand

To learn from the success of other brands in an area you are striving to improve in, it is often helpful to go under the hood to understand the mindset and the approach that enabled the brands to achieve their results.

The Home Depot’s Chief Marketing Officer Molly Battin, gave some insight into how the brand approaches inclusive marketing that makes them so effective. Here’s her comments upon the news of their consumer ranking in cultural inclusivity, “This award reflects our commitment to connect with all our customers at Home Depot. We believe that we make meaningful connections by serving our communities, understanding our customers, and reflecting them in everything we do and in all our communications, both inside and outside of our stores.”

Chante Lagon is the Sr. Manager of Multi-Cultural Marketing at The Home Depot. She told me that the brand’s intention in connecting meaningfully with its customers comes from a desire to “reach people on an emotional level. She went on to add that “there’s a certain inclusivity that you’ve got to make sure you are practicing if you’re going to reach someone on an emotional level.”

During our discussion on the Inclusion & Marketing podcast , Lagon also shared that brands choosing to engage consumers from underrepresented and underserved communities is becoming an expectation. She explained, “our multi-cultural customer is becoming more important, is becoming more visible.” She added that the these consumer groups have an increased need, desire, and expectation to be reflected, and “served in a way that makes us feel like we are seen and heard.”

How To Transform Your Brand To Be Culturally Inclusive

Inclusive marketing continues to prove that it drives business results. But it often requires an internal transformation for brands to do it authentically and effectively.

Lagon shared that it is important for brand teams engaging in inclusive marketing to embrace learning, ensure they are equipping themselves with the insights and cultural intelligence needed, and to not be afraid to have conversations and ask questions about areas they don’t understand, especially if it isn’t a part of your lived experience.

Investing in the professional development and support for your team during the transformation to being a culturally inclusive brand is essential. Know that you’ll also need to implement systems and processes that enable you to show up consistently to deliver products, services, and experiences that speak to underrepresented and underserved communities in an authentic and effective way.

Becoming an inclusive brand has many rewards, both for the customers you serve, and for your business. However, it will require more than just adding in more diverse photos into your visual imagery to make an impact.

Follow the lead of The Home Depot. Connect your inclusive marketing efforts to your values, as well as the way you think about serving and showing up for your customers. And invest in making sure your team is ready and equipped to make all the customers you serve feel seen and like they belong.

How A Full-Funnel SEO & PR Strategy Can Drive Leads & Sales

In my recent webinar with Search Engine Journal about how to earn links with digital PR , I didn’t have time to dive into the importance of the audience journey and a full-funnel strategy. This article is to remedy that.

Have you found that ranking in search engines is more difficult lately? Or maybe your link building isn’t driving the top 3 ranking it used to.

Google representatives have been actively discussing the decrease in the importance of links in Google’s algorithm.

What does this mean?

This doesn’t seem to mean links don’t work, but that links and brand mentions in the context of the audience’s journey are factors that help to break into the top 3 positions of Google – and, I believe, eventually, how you’ll make it into SGE or other high-visibility areas of search.

A full-funnel PR and SEO strategy is a method for building links and brand mentions in the context of the audience’s journey online, creating an off-page user experience.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the key takeaways you’ll find throughout this article:

Off-Page Audience Experience With The Brand Matters

Google recommends being helpful to the audience and demonstrating Experience, Expertise, Authority, and trust ( E-E-A-T ) in a category to rank highly.

Your audiences are constantly looking for a solution that solves their problem or creates an opportunity, and for trusted sources to guide them through the decision-making process.

They may become aware of this problem or the solutions long before they even reach the search engines.

The chart below illustrates the sites that receive the most visits vs. those that send the most referral traffic.

This data indicates that search engines will drive the most traffic to sites, but any given audience spends a significant amount of time engaging on other platforms, digesting content about various topics.

Social and News sites get 20% and 12% of the shares of visits, respectively, while search engines drive over 70% of total traffic.

If the audience is using several touchpoints to learn about a given product or solution, wouldn’t Google use these to determine which company is a helpful source and what its E-E-A-T is for those topics?

I had my digital PR data team at PureLinq gather data for sites that ranked in Google for a seed set of cybersecurity keywords.

We then identified all of the keywords that those sites ranked in the top three positions. From that, we gathered data about the count of brand mentions and brand search volume for each domain.

The chart below shows the number of brand mentions (x-axis), U.S. search volume for brand keywords (y-axis), and the count of keywords in the top three (bubble size). Larger bubbles mean a higher count of keywords ranked in the top three.

This data set is only for cybersecurity brands.

As brand mentions increase, the bubbles grow in size, showing that a larger number of brand mentions correlates with a higher count in the top three rankings.

Brand mentions seem to influence ranking. I know there are a large number of confounding variables in this analysis. However, the idea that Google can use these measures to identify E-E-A-T is believable.

How does this play out in the real world? To understand more, I looked at Lectric eBike.

Case Study: Lectric eBike Full Funnel PR & SEO

This case study demonstrates the power of integrating digital PR with SEO to create a cohesive and effective full-funnel marketing strategy.

The key to success was the strategic alignment of content across all stages of the customer journey, ensuring that each piece contributed to building awareness, trust, and, finally, decision-making confidence.

By securing authoritative links and mentions, Lectric eBikes not only improved its SEO performance but also established itself as a trusted brand in the eyes of consumers and search engines alike.

The rise in organic visibility and brand searches directly contributed to the overall increase in website traffic and, ultimately, sales.

This case underscores the importance of a holistic approach to digital marketing, where PR and SEO work hand in hand to guide the customer journey from awareness to conversion.

Maximum Organic Visibility

At the time of this analysis, Lectric was ranked in position 1 for “ebike” and 3 for “ebikes.”

As a result of the non-brand and brand visibility, the website went from <40,000 estimated clicks per month to over 200,000 in just about 2 years – and it still seems to be growing.

How They Did It

Lectric integrated digital PR and SEO together with a full-funnel PR & SEO strategy.

Late in 2022, Lectric began to secure more media links & brand mentions.

At first glance, you might think that the growth in backlinks was the major factor in the organic traffic growth.

The famous Ahrefs chart shows a strong correlation between the number of referring domains and organic traffic growth.

However, this chart causes much confusion since it doesn’t tell the full story.

Note : Semrush and Ahrefs have very different traffic estimates lately. However, any traffic estimate will be inherently inaccurate. They estimate these based on position, average monthly search volume, and estimated clickthrough rate (CTR) using Google’s keyword planner data. They all calculate CTR differently.

A little more digging with Ahref’s content explorer and BuzzSumo shows that the site saw growth in brand mentions starting in mid-2022, around the same time the organic traffic began to grow.

Lectric gained much of the organic traffic improvement by focusing on creating content for each stage of the audience journey.

The brand generated links and brand mentions based on the audience’s needs and wants, driving brand search volume.

Lectric eBikes secured media coverage on environmental and technology news platforms and podcasts. This effort placed the brand in front of a broad audience, emphasizing its commitment to eco-friendliness and innovation.

Placements gained during this stage aimed to educate the audience on the environmental benefits of e-bikes, leveraging unique data and expert commentary to secure media coverage.

  • Consumers are drawn to sustainable transportation, seeing e-bikes as a way to align with environmental values. ( Rv Lifestyle )
  • The unique, self-funded growth story of Lectric eBikes appeals to those seeking reliable and ethically operated companies. ( The Verge )
  • Insights from the CEO of Lectric eBikes highlight the enjoyment and utility of e-bikes, broadening the appeal to a wider audience. ( Autonocast )

These placements generated topically relevant and authoritative links and brand mentions related to the company and individual expertise.

Expert commentary and unique data appeal to journalists. Lectric could have used PR outreach to pitch Lectric’s sales data and CEO commentary to obtain media coverage.

I almost exclusively use unique data and expert commentary to secure media coverage in digital PR. This is a very effective technique.

Consideration

The company obtained mentions in articles that discussed market success, customer satisfaction, and endorsements from reputable sources. This helped build trust and positioned Lectric eBikes as a reliable choice.

Coverage included comparative discussions on pricing and quality, showing how Lectric stands out from competitors. This was crucial for audiences evaluating their options.

  • Lectric eBikes’ market success and customer satisfaction offer social proof, encouraging new customers to consider an e-bike. ( Electrek article )
  • Gaining trust from the audience by applying for awards from trusted sources (Arizona Tech Council).
  • Media coverage and expert commentary discussing how they focus on a lower price over incentive programs ( Axios )
  • Securing links and mentions in articles that evaluate options for e-bikes ( Earth911 )

Digital PR Insight

The Axios article is a great example of a technique I use in data campaigns. Find data about specific states or cities that relate to your niche. Then, use that data to pitch media about a given topic.

The website’s content was tailored to answer final questions and overcome objections. This included detailed product comparisons, reviews, and clear, transparent pricing information.

By this stage, Lectric eBikes focused on ranking for both non-brand and brand-specific keywords, facilitating easy access for users ready to make a purchase decision.

The audience is actively searching Lectric by name as a result of the digital PR.

Lectic’s site has comparison, reviews, and showroom information easily accessible in the main navigation.

Pro tip: Brand search for a company or product seems to have an impact on a site’s ability to rank in the top three for non-brand keywords .

What Is Full-Funnel PR & SEO?

It’s the stages of the audience journey.

A full-funnel strategy means that you create content for each stage in the audience’s journey and at the touchpoints where they are going for that type of information.

The audience journey has several stages:

  • Awareness Stage: The customer becomes aware of a need, opportunity, or problem and starts looking for solutions.
  • Consideration Stage: The customer evaluates different options and solutions to address their need or problem.
  • Decision Stage: The customer decides on the best solution and buys or takes action.

A full-funnel strategy creates content for each stage of the audience journey.

Using e-bikes as an example:

  • Situation: Consumers want to have less of a carbon footprint, and e-bikes are an option.
  • Awareness: Provide graphics showing the amount of carbon an e-bike produces compared to a car.
  • Considerations: Show how your e-bike compares to others in terms of carbon footprint.
  • Decision: Provide information about pricing and maybe carbon savings during the checkout process.

It’s Wherever The Audience Is

The audience journey has touchpoints they use to learn or gather insights at different stages.

For example:

  • Awareness Stage: The audience reads news sites, so you use digital PR to pitch unique data to journalists who cover environmental issues.
  • Consideration Stage: The audience searches Google for [e-bikes with lowest carbon footprint], so you rank articles with data showing how your e-bike has the lowest carbon footprint.
  • Decision Stage: The audience will search your e-bike’s brand name and purchase intent keywords, so you should focus on ranking your e-commerce pages for brand and non-brand keywords.

Targeting each stage of the audience’s journey can create topically relevant links at key touchpoints.

Designing A Full-Funnel Strategy

Designing a strategy means laying out a structured roadmap for businesses to effectively guide their target audience from awareness to decision-making.

I’m a big fan of templates that simplify processes. I created this React Workbook as part of my Digital PR for SEO Mini MBA course. You can use it to create an audience journey map, identify assets, and create an integrated PR and SEO strategy. Screenshots are below.

Create An Audience Journey Map

Start by mapping your audience’s journey, identifying key stages, touchpoints, and content needs. This will serve as the foundation for your strategy.

Understand and visualize the path your audience takes from first becoming aware of a need or problem to making a purchase decision.

Create Owned Assets For Each Stage

Develop a variety of unique assets and resources tailored to each stage of the audience journey, designed to engage, inform, and convert your target audience. These assets should be useful for both digital PR and SEO.

Instead of creating endless blog articles, create assets that are linkable and shareable.

  • Expert commentary: Leverage internal experts and the C-suite to provide commentary on trends in the media.
  • Unique data: Research unique data and insights into trends or data about the company’s growth.
  • Expert resources: Have internal experts identify resources that are helpful to the audience.
  • Guides: Create easy-to-use guides that help your audience accomplish something at a stage in their journey

In my webinar with SEJ , I gave the example of how my digital PR team earned links by analyzing publicly available data in manufacturing around the outsourcing of manufacturing overseas due to increasing labor costs in the US.

This idea was a result of recent media trends discussing the idea that US manufacturing may be in a recession. We did this for a CFO consultancy that worked with manufacturing companies.

Thus, these assets can show your overall expertise in a given category.

With assets in hand, start an integrated digital PR and SEO program.

Implement Integrated Digital PR And SEO

Launch a coordinated digital PR and SEO campaign that leverages external media coverage (links and brand mentions) and optimized online content to improve organic search visibility and drive targeted traffic to your website.

  • Digital PR tactics: Pitch story ideas, unique data, and expert commentary to journalists and influencers to secure media mentions and backlinks.

By systematically mapping the audience journey, creating engaging content for each stage, and leveraging both digital PR and SEO, businesses can build a powerful online presence by ranking in the top three and driving brand search.
