Although it might appear similar to the U.S. resume format at first glance, the Australian resume differs in some details that if missed, might very well ruin your chances of getting a call-back. 

Don’t worry though, we’re going to cover all of those details starting with the elephant in the room:

#1. Australian Resume vs CV

Unlike the U.S., in Australia, the terms “resume” and “CV” are used to refer to the same document . You will most likely come across “resume” more often, but if not, know that the terms are synonymous with each other. 

#2. How long should an Australian resume be?

In the U.S., a resume should typically be one page . 

An Australian resume, however, should definitely be more than one page. If you are a professional, three to four pages are what’s expected. If you are a recent graduate or don’t have much experience in the field, two pages will be enough . 

Don’t forget to be to-the-point, though. Even though you have the freedom to present yourself with a lengthy resume, you shouldn’t get into unnecessary details.

If you have a lot of years of experience, you shouldn’t go more than 10 years back in your resume. If there are any earlier work experiences that you particularly want to mention, you can add a “other professional experience” section and briefly mention it there. You can also end the section with “Full resume available upon request.”

As a matter of fact, there are. If you're applying for a job in Australia you need to make sure that your resume is written in correct Australian english. 

#4. Do you include a photo in an Australian resume?

Unless you’re applying for a job that is related to your appearance (modeling or acting), it’s best to not include a photo in your resume. If the company wants you to include one, they will usually specify it beforehand. 

There are some countries, like Belgium, France, and Germany, where you should include a photo in your resume . This rule, however, doesn’t apply to Australia.

#5. What personal information should you include in an Australian resume?

Just like your photo, personal information can make you vulnerable to profiling based on gender, race, age, or appearance. To avoid that, provide only the necessary contact information like name, address, phone number, and email address. 

It’s actually illegal for employers in Australia to ask you for information like age, marital status, religion, sexual preference, or nationality.

6 Typical Australian Resume Sections

Now that we’ve gone over what makes an Australian resume different, let’s focus on its layout and format. 

An Australian resume typically has the following sections:

Resume Objective/Summary

Although it isn’t mandatory, it is recommended for you to include a resume objective or summary.

A resume objective (or career objective) states your goals for employment and what you aim for in your career. It’s 1-2 sentences and is great for recent graduates or people who are changing careers. 

  • Recent computer science graduate seeking a full-time position as a programmer. Strong knowledge of object-oriented programming and application development tools.

A resume summary (or career summary) highlights your professional experience and gives the employer a glimpse of your skills before reading about them further in your resume. It’s between 3-5 sentences and is great for job seekers with years of experience. 

  • Driven programmer with 8+ years of experience developing and maintaining enterprise software applications. Helped design and develop 3 successful applications over the past 5 years.

Work Experience

Your work experience should be displayed in a reverse-chronological order . With each entry, you should provide the start and end date along with a brief description of your experience, your responsibilities, and your achievements. 

When possible, quantify your achievements and responsibilities. This shows the recruiter how you stand out from the rest of the applicants:

If there are any gaps in your employment history, you should account for them as well if possible. Chances are, your interviewer will ask you about it anyway. 

If you have work experience in a large company/institution in your country that an Australian recruiter might not be familiar with, you should provide some information on your employer as well. 

For example, if you have worked as a sales manager for one of the largest toy companies in your country, don’t be hesitant to provide that information. By simply stating the name of the company you risk downplaying your experience if the recruiter isn’t familiar with the company.

Your education history should also be displayed in reverse-chronological order. Each entry should consist of the name of the institution, date attended, your major/minor/specialization, and any related honors or awards.

A simple list of skills and strengths will provide the employer with a quick snapshot of what you have to offer and what you excel at. In general, it’s best to focus on hard skills, but if you will be listing any soft skills like “leadership” or “critical thinking”, make sure you can back them up with experiences.

Volunteer Experience

If you have any volunteer experience , it’s important to note it on your resume. Hiring managers appreciate it. 

Often, volunteer experience can count as work experience too. Especially if it matches with a period of time you were not employed and if it is related to your profession. In that case, you can even include it in the “work experience” section. 

The name, position, and phone number of your referee/s will be enough. Most recruiters contact references after the interview process anyway.

The first step to working in Australia is creating a great CV – but did you know that Australian CVs are quite different to English or American ones? Navigating the Australian job market can be challenging, especially for those new to the country. This guide provides you with essential tips and templates to craft a resume that stands out in the Australian job market.

Tailoring Your Resume for Different Job Types

As for all countries, a CV is an essential part of the job search in Australia. However, depending on the types of jobs you want to do in the country, your CV will be different. Do you see yourself working short-term on a farm, in a casual hospitality job, or in a long-term job in a city in your specific field? The steps for finding a job will vary depending on what you’re looking for. Now get creating the perfect CV to land you your dream job !

Do you need a resume for a farm job?

A resume is not always necessary to work in Australia . They won’t always ask you for one for farm jobs like fruit picking . If you are looking for a job on a farm, emailing a farmer your CV will often be a waste of time. It is better to go directly to the farms and speak with the owners or even call them and ask them if they are hiring. Independent farmers will usually not ask you for a CV in person but we still advise you to have one ready, for example if you have to apply online (this happens for some large companies).

CV for a long-term job

If you are looking for a long-term or stable job with a small or larger company, having a well-written CV that follows Australian criteria will be essential , especially for any job that requires experience or qualifications. Highlight specific professional skills, career progression, and significant achievements.

CV for a casual job

If you are looking for a more casual or temporary job in a supermarket or in catering, your CV will mainly serve to prove that you have a basic knowledge of English . It is also an excellent way to meet managers directly by handing in your CV. Focus on flexibility, customer service skills, and quick learning ability.

Since January 2024,  working holiday visa makers  can work for the same employer in Australia for more than 6 months without asking permission to the government if your work is: – in different locations and work in any one location does not exceed 6 months – in plant and animal cultivation anywhere in Australia – in certain industries (aged care and disability services, fishing and pearling, tree farming and felling, construction and mining, in northern Australia only) – natural disaster recovery work – in critical sectors, including agriculture, food processing, health, aged and disability care and childcare, anywhere in Australia – in the critical sector of tourism and hospitality anywhere in Australia.  For any other situations not covered above, you must ask for permission to work longer than 6 months with one employer.

Certificates and trainings required to work in Australia

To work in certain industries in Australia, you will need to complete vocational training and obtain a certificate.

The most well-known certificates are:

  • the RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol): mandatory to work in an establishment where alcohol is served.
  • the White Card : mandatory for all building trades, such as construction
  • the RSG/RCG : mandatory to work in gambling establishments, such as casinos and game rooms.
  • Barista : If you want to work in a coffee shop like Starbucks, MacCoffees or Gloria Jeans Coffee, you will need this training.

Understanding Australian Resume Standards

Length of your resume.

First of all, you should know that an resume in Australia is often longer and more detailed than you might be used to. Resumes in Western Europe are usually kept to two pages, whereas an Australian resume can easily go up to five or even seven pages for a specialised job. So don’t hesitate to be specific about your experience and personal qualities.

You will also need to adapt your CV to the position you are applying for! This may seem logical, but consider presenting your experience differently depending on the job you are applying for. Some tasks, responsibilities or skills will be more relevant than others.

Of course, there are exceptions to this rule! To work in the hospitality industry as a waiter or dishwasher, for example, it is advisable to opt for a shorter CV comprising 1 or 2 pages to make it easier to read quickly. (This does not apply if you are aiming for, for example, a management position in a large hotel!) Also remember to indicate the Australian certificates that are necessary mandatory for the job, such as your RSA .

Resume in Australia: Photo or no photo?

It is not generally recommended to include a photo on your Australian CV. You should also avoid including your age or date of birth as there are age discrimination laws in Australia.

However, make sure to add a section for references . You will need to include the names and contacts of previous employers who would be happy to recommend you to a new employer. Choose people who speak English and with whom you have had a good relationship.

Key Sections of an Australian Resume

Here are the different sections that must appear on your Australian resume. The order of the sections is up to you . For instance, if you have little professional experience but have completed a course or degree related to the job you’re applying for, put the “Education” section before “Work Experience”. If you are looking for a job in catering, making the “Skills” section (including your RSA) appear before your work experience could be a good idea. As a general rule, start with your most recent experience.

1 – Personal Details

Make sure to include your:

  • Local Australian address*
  • Australian phone number
  • Professional email address
  • Optional : your   LinkedIn  profile (highly appreciated in Australia for certain types of jobs).

* The majority of employers prefer to hire workers already in Australia. So put down a local address, even if it is a backpackers hostel!

Reminder: It’s not necessary to include details like your date of birth, marital status, or photo, as these could lead to unconscious bias.

 2 –  Introduction: Quick presentation of yourself and what you are looking for

Describe your professional motivation in two or three sentences. What you are looking for in a job, and why your qualities make you the right person for this specific job . Remember to specify your availability (eg. Available from January 7th 2024). This is a very short, but very important part of your resume – it’s like a mini cover letter. The idea is that your potential employer will glance at it and makes a decision on whether he or she is interested in reading the rest of your resume in a split-second.

This part can be short if you are looking for a temporary or holiday job. For example to find a job in service, you can write “I am a UK traveler on a Working Holiday Visa and I am looking for a position as a waitress in Brisbane. I have my RSA certificate and I am available to start asap.” You can also decide to say more about yourself if you wish or to highlight your skills more.

The Australian resume is typically more comprehensive than in some other countries. It’s not just about listing your experience; it’s about presenting yourself as the ideal candidate for the job.

3 – Work Experience: “Employment history”

Provide a detailed description of the jobs you have done in the past. This includes your tasks and the responsibilities you had within the company . Highlight what you contributed to the company of your previous employers (e.g. if you worked at a bar and set up a Facebook page for them). Employers like to see that you show initiative.

As a traveller, we often want to get away from the work we did at home and try something new. If this applies to you, emphasise what you did in the past that could be an asset for this new job . For instance, if you are applying for a receptionist position, specify that you have experience hosting clients at another company.

Specify the name of the business and its industry , the start and end dates of your contract , your previous job titles , and the city and country where you worked.

Put your previous work experience in reverse chronological order , with your most recent job on the top. If you have had many different jobs in the past, only include those related to the job which you are applying for.

4 – Training and education: “Education and training”

List your education in reverse chronological order. This section should include both your degree and any professional training you have obtained such as internships, apprenticeships. For each point specify the name of the educational course, dates, school/ institution, city and country of graduation .

The Australian school system may differ from your home countries. In principle, it is built up as follows:

  • High school degree;
  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Advanced diploma ou Higher national certificate;
  • Master’s degree;
  • PhD (Doctorate).

5 – “Skills and strengths”

Highlight both hard and soft skills relevant to the job you’re applying for. Mention any certifications , languages, or technical skills .

  • For a job in graphic design , specify your computer skills in a ‘computer skills’ sub-section and your soft skills in a ‘personal qualities’ section (e.g. your creativity and adaptability);
  • To work in hospitality , emphasise your ability to work as part of a team, your organisational and interpersonal skills.

Specify the different languages you speak and your level of competency (e.g. native, intermediate, beginner). You can also add other diplomas and certificates here, such as the RSA , White Card , and Driver’s license.

This section is very important when looking for a job in Australia. If you are not a native English speaker, any potential employer will want to know whether your English is good enough for the job you’re applying for. Also, considering that for many jobs you are required to drive, it is important to mention whether you have a driver’s license or not.

6 – Hobbies: “Hobbies and interests”

Do not neglect this part of your CV, but do not list all your hobbies either! In fact, your activities, passions and commitments will allow your future employer to better understand you. Highlight the activities you do outside the professional sphere. Whether practising yoga, being a soccer captain or even participating in community activities, these elements reflect your personality and your qualities.

Volunteer Experience/Extra-curricular Activities: Especially for those with limited work experience, such activities can demonstrate your skills and commitment.

7 – References: “Referees”

Here you include the names of people you worked with in the past and their contact details . Make sure to check with them that they agree to be listed as a contact before adding them to this list. Your future employer will probably contact them to find out more about you and the way you work, so you want to only add people that will have something positive to say. If you are not comfortable giving this information at first, just add their names and state ‘Contact details available on request’ . This will also give you the opportunity to inform your contacts that they may get a call!

Tips & tricks for a great Australian Resume

Once your resume is in an Australian format, you should update your phone number and address as soon as possible.

Australian employers are much more likely hire candidates who are already in Australia.  Those who have an Australian address and phone number will have a head start.

If you do not have an address in Australia, as many travellers do not, you can add the address of your hostel or a local post office. You will always be contacted by phone or mail, so it does not make a difference.

Add a title to your Resume

The CV title will allow the employer to quickly identify which position you are applying for. Write the position offered in the title of your resume. For example: – Barista Position – Waiter Position – Manager Position – Farm Hand.

Tailor your resume to the job

In fact, depending on the job for which you are applying, your experiences, degrees, passions, etc. must be revised to be in line with the job. Your CV must be targeted ! Don’t include information that doesn’t add value or is not relevant to the job you’re applying for.

For example, if you are looking for a job in construction but do not have the experience, highlight your DIY skills, your personal DIY-related experiences. If you are looking for a sales job and have never had one before, highlight your past customer relationships as a waitress or in admin.

Digital Literacy

In today’s job market, being tech-savvy is a must. Include your proficiency in software like Microsoft Office, digital marketing tools, or any industry-specific software.

Visual Appeal and Readability

As for the layout and the visual aspect of your CV, a word of advice: go for the simplest option . Avoid overly extravagant colours and layouts. The content is much more important than the format. Australians prefer a clean and clear CV. Use a professional and readable font . Keep the size consistent, usually between 10 and 12 points.

There are many free tools online to help you create your Australian resume. Many platforms offer simple and beautiful CV templates. You can fill them out free online then download them. CVDesignR and Canva are good options.

Ensure your resume is clearly laid out , with headings and bullet points to facilitate easy reading. Avoid large blocks of text.

Print your resume

Make sure to print quite a few resumes (20-30) to hand in to places in person . You will probably want to modify your CV as time goes on, so it does not make sense to print many more. In most cities, you will find a store called  Office Works . They offer attractive rates for printing (from $0.08 per copy). Otherwise, you have the option to go to your local library . The problem with this is that sometimes it is necessary to buy a card to recharge with a minimum amount in dollars, so you end up paying more.

Do not print too many copies at once. You may not distribute them all, or you may want or need to make some changes to it over time to bring it up to date.

If you want to print a few copies, between 1 and 3, ask to have your prints done at your youth hostel, at a travel agency for backpackers or at a shop that does photo development. It will cost you less.

Hand out your resume personally

Try to walk around and hand out your CV directly to employers if you are searching for work in restaurants, bars, shops etc. Do not hesitate to ask to speak to the manager – this will allow you to meet your potential future employer and make more of an impression. First impressions are important. Wear clean and professional clothes. Avoid applying in a restaurant dressed in shorts, flip-flops etc. Sometimes handing your CV to a manager can turn into a job interview on the spot , so be prepared.

  • Use Australian English spelling .
  • Typos and grammatical errors . Proofread your resume multiple times or have someone else review it.
  • If you’re from overseas, clarify your work rights in Australia.
  • Be honest. Australian employers value integrity and straightforwardness.

A resume and a CV are two distinct documents in the United States. However, Australian job postings use the terms interchangeably. Therefore, as long as you have a resume that includes the sections below, you can apply to jobs that ask for a resume or CV with the same document.

Australian resumes are typically three to four pages long, depending on your work experience. New graduates looking for entry-level positions might have a two-page resume. This length differs from the standards in the United States, which ask for a concise one-page document.

When you’re ready to create your Australian resume, include the following sections. You can put them in different orders depending on your strengths. For example, professionals with plenty of work experience use the reverse chronological format to showcase relevant jobs. New graduates list education first, while people changing careers highlight their skills.

You should follow formatting guidelines regardless of the layout you choose for your Australian resume. Use a dark font so it’s easy to read. Write your resume in correct Australian English to show the hiring manager you can adapt to the language and culture.

For instance, if you are applying for a position that requires expertise in more than three fields, then the combination resume format is the best choice. It also allows you to place your experience so that the recruiter sees it first.

Your educational history should only include your  higher education qualifications  in chronological order, beginning with the most recent qualification you have achieved.

When providing your work history, mention the name of companies and job roles in chronological order, starting with the most recent one. Also, remember to add the dates you worked there for.

For each job role, provide a list of your achievements and responsibilities. Additionally, you must mention the significant contributions you made to the organisations.

Furthermore, if you have had any gaps in your career, explain them briefly and positively. Do not leave out this information, as the employer may find it suspicious.

Key Skills and Strengths

Australia CV Objective: It is recommended, though not mandatory, that you include a Career Objective at the top of your resume. This can also be called a Career Profile or Summary . Your objective serves as a short introduction to you and to your resume and should give the hiring manager a reason to continue reading. According to Karalyn Brown , “A resume without a career objective is like a movie without a title, or a trailer.” Your objective should be brief - three to five lines - and should give a very clear description of the experience you are bringing to the position, and what your goals and ambitions are for the role you are applying to.

Each entry should include the beginning and end date of your tenure, and be sure to account for gaps in your employment. Today, a lot of employers and job candidates use the terms ‘CV’ and ‘resume’ interchangeably. Indeed, you may see just as many references to ‘resume templates’ as you do ‘CV templates’.

Traditionally, a CV referred to a comprehensive (up to six pages) account of your entire professional life, while a resume was a summary (up to two pages) of your education, skills and work experience. However, in more modern times, the need for a lengthy overview of your career history has become redundant, with a hiring company instead expecting a two-page summary.

At the same time, people began to use the two terms reciprocally. Now, whether you call your career overview a ‘CV’ or ‘resume’, it has no bearing on your chance of reaching an interview shortlist.

The purpose of a resume.

Your resume serves to introduce the relevancy of your skills, experience, qualifications and achievements to a recruiter and potential employer. A recruiter or employer may not spend longer than a few minutes reviewing your resume, so it should succinctly convey your most relevant achievements. If the reader thinks you are a suitable candidate for the role, your resume will have achieved its purpose – an offer to attend an interview.

If you can do that well in one page, that’s great. However, the average length of a resume is usually around two pages.

Your resume should be approximately two pages long. If it is substantially longer, eliminate information that isn’t relevant to the role or industry.

For instance, look back at the key skills and attributes required for the job in question and then review your resume – are you using valuable space to describe skills, attributes and responsibilities from roles that don’t match up to the job in question?

If so, remove this content or, at the least, simplify your language. On your resume, you must get to the point, so don’t use ten words to say something you could say in five.  

On the other hand, one page may suffice in certain circumstances. The main thing to keep in mind when you’re writing your resume is that you must be able to demonstrate your skills, experience, and future potential.

What not to include in a resume.

Use your common sense when writing your resume. If you have been employed for many years and your career has evolved over time, knowing how to write a resume well means you will not include every role you’ve ever held, such as the casual retail position you had in high school or the captaincy of your social sporting team. Rather, use the limited space on your resume strategically by ensuring every line shows how you are relevant to the particular job you’re applying for. 

Similarly, if you have an advanced degree, few people are going to be concerned about the exams you took when you were 16 years old. Instead, only include training that is relevant to the position you are applying for.

Unless otherwise stated, you don’t need to attach copies of certificates, qualifications or references. You should instead bring these to a job interview.

We also advise candidates to avoid listing their hobbies or interests. Focus instead on the experience and skills that make you suitable for the job you’re applying for. The exceptions occur when you have limited relevant experience or if the employer specifically asks applicants to list hobbies. In these cases, keep it brief. Avoid anything that could be contentious, such as political affiliations, and instead show how your personality is suited to that of the organisation. For example, consider listing a hobby that requires expertise relevant to the role, such as organisational or communication skills. 

You also do not need to design a creative resume, unless you work in a creative field. Some candidates attempt to produce a more creative resume to stand out, however it really is the relevancy of your skills and experience that will ensure you make a shortlist, not how you present your resume.

1. Contact information

Start with the basics such as your name, phone number, email address (make sure the email address you use sounds professional) and  LinkedIn profile . Use the phone number and email address that you use most often. You don’t want to disappoint an employer by failing to respond to their invitation to an interview in a timely fashion.

2. Professional summary 

In 50 to 150 words, describe your applicable experience and skills. This summary should prove your value and help to differentiate you. Avoid describing what you’d like from your next job and instead focus on what you can offer. This is the place for your  USP , or unique selling proposition. Tailor this section to each position that you’re applying to.

Use keywords from the job description so that an ATS can find a match.

3. Skills summary 

The reader of your resume may not have more than a minute to spend scanning each application, particularly if the volume of applications is very high, so including a skills section can capture their attention by making it immediately clear what you can offer. Compile a brief bulleted list of the systems,  skills and competencies  that are most relevant to the job you are applying for. Use keywords from the job description here too.

For instance, if the ad specifies someone who has ‘effective administrative abilities and excellent interpersonal skills’, these should be addressed here with brief evidence as to where you gained those skills. Make sure to tailor your expertise to the individual position you are applying for, always.

4. Achievements

A future employer will be interested in where you went above and beyond the job that you were paid to do and achieved something great. So, next list your key career achievements, supported by facts, statistics or links. For example, if you over-achieved on your sales targets, you need to say by what percentage and over what period.

Keep in mind, this is a summary to grab interest by demonstrating you can successfully add value to an organisation in the type of job you’re applying for, so proof is essential.

5. Work experience 

Your work history should be the most detailed section of your resume, with positions listed in reverse order, beginning with the most recent. Include employer names, positions and primary responsibilities.

If your job title is unconventional, it is perfectly acceptable to replace it with a recognisable equivalent.

It is important to quantify your accomplishments – the reader wants to see facts not fluff. Focus on the value you added in each role, rather than simply listing what your duties were. This section shouldn’t read like a job description. Rather, it should tell the story of your unique strengths and accomplishments. Think of your biggest achievements for each role and provide concrete, quantifiable evidence of each. One way to help you do this is to use action verbs such as “managed” or “oversaw”. Such verbs force you to focus on what you achieved and your results in each role, which proves the value of your experience.

Avoid overused clichés in you CV  that can waste valuable space. Instead, include examples of your work to demonstrate your strengths. Remember that proof is in your results.

We also advise you not to leave gaps in your work history. If you took a year out, carried out an interim assignment, or travelled for six months, say so. Just make sure you illustrate whatever the experience was in a positive way, focusing on the fact that it gave you some great experience and knowledge.

Stating just the years you started or finished a role can also send off alarm bells. Writing "2019 - 2021" could be interpreted as employment from December 2019 to January 2021 unless you say otherwise. 

6. Education & qualifications 

Keep it concise by listing the academic qualification obtained, year of completion, the institution’s name and a one-sentence summary.

7. References 

The details of references are rarely included on resumes. It’s common for candidates to simply write, “References are available upon request” in this section of your resume. Your recruiter will then reach out for the details of your referees at the appropriate point in the recruitment process.

By the time the recruiter or hiring manager reaches the end of your resume, they will have more than likely made their decision about whether to add your resume to the interview pile or not. Here are three final tips to help your resume reach the shortlist: Firstly, tailor your resume for each application. To make the interview shortlist, your resume must demonstrate that you possess most or all the criteria required in the job. Tailor your application for each position you apply for by expanding on your experience relevant to the job and cutting back the less relevant parts. You should also show that you are genuinely interested in this job. Failing to tailor your CV by submitting a blanket application will not impress. So, weave into your professional summary the reasons that make you a good fit for this particular position and what specifically resonates with you about the organisation or role. Secondly, make sure you add quantifiable results. As mentioned above, providing evidence to support the claims you make on your CV brings it to life and establishes for the reader the value you could bring. Personal details.

  • Use your name as the heading in large, bold lettering. There is no need to include the words ‘resume’ or ‘curriculum vitae’ anywhere in the heading.
  • Include contact phone number/s and your preferred email address. You can also add a residential address, however, this is optional. Employers will be using these details to contact you, so ensure your email address and voicemail greeting reflect your professionalism. 
  • International students or permanent residents may benefit from indicating their visa status and work rights.
  • There is no need to add extra information such as a date of birth, photo or nationality.

Career objective/Profile/Summary [Optional]

  • This section describes the type and level of position you are seeking and the industry or area in which you would like to be employed. A well-targeted career objective makes you look focused and enthusiastic and helps the reader interpret the information that follows in the resume.
  • The objective should be brief and realistic with a focus on what you are able to offer, eg, ‘Seeking a research position within Environmental Sciences where my university studies in water management and my work experience in local government environmental management can be utilised.’

Skills summary [Optional]

  • This section can be useful for drawing the recruiter’s attention to your key competencies.
  • Focus on skills that are relevant to the job by checking the selection criteria or keywords in the job advertisement.

Experience is a broad term that can refer to a range of practical activities. You may wish to list all of your practical experience under this heading or divide it into different categories. If you have a mix of industry relevant experience and less relevant work, you can divide the section into ‘Relevant Experience’ and ‘Other Experience’. This will ensure that the employer sees the most relevant information first. Some other possible headings are below.

  • This is one of the more common headings for listing experience.
  • Start with your most recent job and work backwards. Include your position title, the name of the organisation and the month and year you commenced and concluded the employment.
  • List your responsibilities and any outcomes or achievements. Quantify where possible, eg, ‘supervised 5 junior staff members’, ‘increased monthly sales by 12%’.
  • Be clear about the skills you have used or developed, particularly if you have not included a skills summary on your resume.

Practicums/Placements

You can use this heading for any industry-related experience you have gained as part of your degree, eg, clinical placements for Nursing, teaching practicums for Education, field education placements for Social Work.

  • List the name of the organisation, duration of the placement, responsibilities, achievements (if any) and learning outcomes.

Volunteering

This section refers to unpaid work undertaken in the not-for-profit sector, community groups, NGOs or charitable organisations. Most employers will be interested in your voluntary work because it offers evidence of initiative and transferable skills.

  • Lay out your experience in a similar way to your employment – title, organisation, dates, duties, achievements/outcomes.

Extracurricular activities

Here you can include student clubs and societies, sporting activities, mentoring, student representative roles and more. As with volunteering, most employers value extracurricular activities.

  • Again, lay out in the same way as your employment. Give enough detail for the employer to understand your contribution to the organisation/team/program and the skills you have used.

Memberships

Include membership of any professional associations or industry bodies .

  • Use the full and correct name of the organisation, the year of your membership, and your level of membership, eg, student, affiliate, professional, etc.

Conferences/Publications/Articles

  • Relevant for applicants with research-based qualifications , or those seeking media/communications/writing roles.
  • List your papers and conferences in the formatting used by your industry or discipline area.
  • If applying for a non-research role, consider summarising and/or quantifying your publications or conferences, eg, published three research articles on the topic of XYZ in high impact journals, demonstrating excellent written communication skills.

Add your own relevant section/s

You can include other relevant sections in your resume if you have a particular set of experiences that you would like to bring to the employer’s attention. Choose a clear heading that describes your experience and ensure that all points in the section are relevant to the heading. It is important that the section is closely related to the job to which you are applying. Some examples include:

  • ‘Leadership’ – for students with experience in student leadership such as mentoring, executive roles in clubs/societies, student politics, or other leadership roles.
  • ‘Community Involvement’ – for students who are active in charity or not for profit work, volunteering, advocacy or other community development activities.
  • ‘Exhibitions’ – for students seeking work in the visual arts.
  • This should always be the last entry on your resume. List 2 or 3 referees who can comment on your work-based skills. If you prefer not to list them on your resume, simply write ‘Available on request’. This will allow you to check in and warn your referees before they are called. Always seek a referee’s permission before you list them in your resume and give them information about the job.
  • Choose the person who will give you the best reference, ideally, a previous work/volunteer supervisor, manager or an academic.
  • Include their name, job title, current organisation, contact details, and their relationship to you, eg, ‘Thesis supervisor’, ‘Current manager’, if the relationship is not clear from their job title.

Justice Michael Lee has now adjourned the hearing and formally reserved his decision in the case.

He said he would inform all sides as soon as possible about when he will deliver his judgment.

"It will not be Monday or Tuesday, you can rest assured," he said.

"There is a symmetry of interest in getting this out as quickly as possible."

Mr Lehrmann's barrister Matthew Richardson has rejected claims the evidence of Taylor Auerbach should cast doubt on Mr Lehrmann's general credibility.

Network Ten has sought to prove Mr Lehrmann breached his Harman undertaking; that is, not to distribute material which has not been tendered in court.

The broadcaster argues Mr Lehrmann lied to the court about not doing so, and thus, his overall credibility is in doubt.

"There is no natural connection of the denials by my client of a Harman breach … and lies about the material facts," Mr Richardson said.

He has now concluded his closing submission.

Lehrmann's lawyer queries $750 price tag for two days of drugs and sex

Court has resumed and Bruce Lehrmann's lawyer Matthew Richardson is continuing his closing submissions.

He claimed Network Ten had been trying to "resuscitate" Mr Auerbach's credibility this morning.

Earlier, former Seven producer Taylor Auerbach alleged the Seven Network paid Bruce Lehrmann $750 to go towards cocaine and sex workers in a bid to secure an exclusive interview for its current affairs program Spotlight.

"Even the least worldly person in this room, which regrettably is probably me, would know that this is a stretch," Mr Richardson told the court.

He has argued the court is no more informed now than it was before the case was revived.

"The application has not moved the dial on the evidentiary issues, nor on the assessment of damages."

Justice Michael Lee had to briefly interrupt the address to ask a further question of Lisa Wilkinson's barrister, and the court is now in a brief adjournment.

Auerbach wanted to do 'damage' to former employer: Justice Lee

In a small change of plans, Barry Dean, who is representing Lisa Wilkinson, is making a brief closing submission.

He has defended the reason why Taylor Auerbach came to provide his evidence in the case, being his discovery of relevant material while considering separate defamation action.

"In that process, he was asked to look for documents relating to his potential claim in defamation, and the particular documents were discovered," Mr Dean said.

It was after Justice Michael Lee put the argument of Mr Lehrmann's lawyers, that Mr Auerbach "desperately wanted to do as much damage as he could conceivably do" to his former employer and colleagues.

"It doesn't mean he's not a truth teller … he's a man who wanted to make a range of allegations against people under absolute privilege," Justice Lee said.

Justice Lee said it was unusual to hear someone in the witness box say they hated someone else, referring to Mr Auerbach's testimony.

Collins has concluded his closing submissions; Lehrmann's barrister is up next

Matthew Collins has concluded his oral submissions.

He finished by saying the revelations over the past two days went "to the core of Mr Lehrmann's honesty and integrity".

"It showed … a profound disregard for the orderly administration of justice," he said.

Ten's barrister Matthew Collins has argued the team at the Spotlight program was operating in a "perverse universe".

He has questioned why Taylor Auerbach's resignation was not accepted the morning after he charged thousands of dollars worth of massages to a Seven corporate credit card.

"Somehow in the perverse universe in which this program was apparently operating, Mr Auerbach was not terminated for spending more than $10,000 on the company credit card … in connection with getting the story of the year," he said.

"It's staggering.

"I know what I'd do if it was my employee."

Bruce Lehrmann intended to do interviews with Piers Morgan, Tucker Carlson, court hears

The court has heard Bruce Lehrmann had intentions of doing interviews with Piers Morgan and Tucker Carlson after his exclusive sit-down with Seven.

Network Ten's barrister Matthew Collins referred to correspondence between Seven personnel, which revealed Seven was confident it was well-placed to secure an interview with Mr Lehrmann.

The court heard Mr Lehrmann was prepared to do one major interview in Australia, ahead of speaking to Mr Morgan and Mr Carlson.

Mr Morgan is an English broadcaster and journalist, and Mr Carlson is an American political commentator.

Closing submissions from Ten's barrister begin

The court has begun hearing closing submissions from Network Ten's barrister Matthew Collins.

He has focused on former Seven producer Taylor Auerbach's explanation of how he allegedly received material from a brief of evidence that was not tendered in Mr Lehrmann's criminal trial.

Dr Collins has told the court the most coherent explanation was that it was provided by Mr Lehrmann during a golf trip in Tasmania.

"Mr Auerbach has given Your Honour direct evidence that's how he got the document," Dr Collins said

"No other explanation has been proffered.

"Mr Lehrmann has elected not to put on a case in reply to the evidence that was given over the past day-and-a-half."

Network Ten is seeking to prove that Mr Lehrmann told a falsehood when he said during his evidence last year he only gave Seven an interview, and no other material.

"This is not a trifling or excusable matter," Dr Collins said.

"It goes squarely to Mr Lehrmann's attitude towards the administration of justice."

Mr Lehrmann denies giving anything to Seven other than an interview.

Lehrmann representative discussed $200k payment with Seven: Auerbach

The court was also earlier told a representative of Mr Lehrmann discussed a payment of $200,000 for an interview with Seven, while his criminal trial was still ongoing.

Mr Auerbach presented to the court a text message exchange between himself and his former Seven boss Steve Jackson after meeting with Mr Lehrmann's representative John MacGowan at a cafe near Canberra's law courts.

Under questioning from Ten's lawyer Matthew Collins, Mr Auerbach said the men discussed Mr Lehrmann's "many legal fees and the need to be compensated".

"Mr MacGowan had a previous friendship with somebody who had been on a Channel Seven program who had received $150,000 so he said 'I know what she got, so we'll start from there'," Mr Auerbach told the court.

"And we sort of talked about, vaguely, $200,000."

Mr Auerbach said this meeting took place on October 21, 2022, which was two days after the jury in Mr Lehrmann's ACT criminal trial began their deliberations, and days before they were dismissed due to juror misconduct.

Mr Auerbach said the pair also discussed "how that payment might work", and an idea that rather than giving it directly to Mr Lehrmann, it may go into a trust account in Mr MacGowan's name.

A quick recap of what we learnt about the alleged invoice

We heard a little about an invoice that was presented to the court this morning, which Mr Auerbach claims Mr Lehrmann gave to the Seven Network.

Mr Auerbach told the court Seven was invoiced by Mr Lehrmann on January 14, 2023, for expenses he had incurred during negotiations with the program's producers.

Those negotiations, the court heard yesterday, included a boozy night in Sydney nine days earlier in which Mr Lehrmann purchased cocaine and engaged sex workers.

Mr Auerbach told the court that Mr Lehrmann had told him he needed to "replenish his bank account after the bender".

He said that was done through an invoice to Seven, which included $750 of pre-production expenses.

The Seven Network has denied these allegations.

Seven Network executive producer Mark Llewellyn made an appearance during a notable moment in this morning's proceedings.

Mr Llewellyn appeared in a video played to the court in which he was seen wringing out a wet towel, as the Boney M. song Rivers of Babylon played in the background.

Why is this relevant? Good question.

Yesterday, the court was played another video, in which Mr Auerbach was seen breaking his former Seven colleague Steve Jackson's golf clubs.

The court heard that video of Mr Auerbach was "a parody" of the vision of Mr Llewellyn.

Ten's lawyer Matt Collins said he didn't hear enough Boney M. in court these days.

'He's on the warpath again'

The court has also released a dump of documents, which includes a text message exchange Mr Auerbach had with his former boss Steve Jackson.

It took place over the two-day period in January last year when Bruce Lehrmann is alleged to have spent money on illicit drugs and sex workers.

"He's on the warpath again," Mr Auerbach wrote, referring to Mr Lehrmann.

"This is f****d."

Ms Wilkinson's legal team has opted not to seek to cross-examine Seven Network personnel.

The court will reconvene at 2:15pm when it will hear closing submissions.

Court presented with invoice naming 'pre-production expenses'

The court has been presented with the invoice Bruce Lehrmann issued to Seven, which Taylor Auerbach claims was seeking reimbursement for money spent on drugs and sex workers.

The invoice lists an item for "pre-production expenses".

Mr Auerbach told the court this item covers "Mr Lehrmann's expenditure on cocaine and prostitutes".

The court earlier heard Mr Lehrmann suggested an invoice for a daily allowance, but that was not an option, as per diems were only available for Seven staff.

"We had to come up with another category that finance would allow through the system," he said.

"That was the vaguest of the categories that we could choose without being deceptive or misleading."

Mr Auerbach told the court that to his knowledge, the invoice was paid.

Seven has denied these allegations.

Auerbach says Lehrmann spoke of other material that would be helpful for Spotlight

The court has heard there was an in-principle agreement for Bruce Lehrmann to be part of a Spotlight program, which was reached during his criminal trial.

Mr Auerbach said he met Mr Lehrmann's friend, John MacGowan, at a Canberra cafe on October 21, 2022, and discussed "what a Spotlight episode might look like and what it would contain".

Mr Auerbach told the court Mr MacGowan said Mr Lehrmann had other material that would help the production of the program, and pointed to the five-hour audio recording of Brittany Higgins's pre-interview with The Project.

Mr Auerbach has also detailed a meeting with Mr Lehrmann two days later, in which he said he felt confident they had secured his agreement for an interview.

Mr Auerbach said in a text that he had been "on the piss" with Mr Lehrmann.

"He appreciated the fact that I wasn't sitting with the rest of the 'feminazis' in the press pack," Mr Auerbach told the court.

Search to resume this morning for missing bushwalker

A search will resume this morning for a woman who went missing while bushwalking at Belmore Falls in New South Wales .

Just after 1pm on Sunday, emergency services were called to Belmore Falls near Robertson after reports a woman had slipped and fallen down a cliff. An extensive search was initiated, but the 20-year-old was not located and the search was suspended at dusk.

The multi-agency search resumed at 8am yesterday, with police divers assisting.

A command post has now been established at the Belmore Falls lookout car park and the search was scheduled to resume around 8am today, police said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Nationals and Emerson agree Amazon and others should fall under supermarket code

Continuing from our last post with more from AAP :

Federal Nationals MP Bridget McKenzie said Woolworths had a point about which retailers were captured by the code. Speaking on Nine’s Today show earlier, she said:

We’ve got large multinationals in the supermarket ring who aren’t captured. So I’d like to see this expanded over time.

Craig Emerson agreed with McKenzie, telling the program:

Woolworths, I think, makes a good point, and that is the code to be extended should be expanded to cover rivals Amazon, Costco and even Chemist Warehouse.

But ultimately, the Nationals and the Liberals wanted to see divestiture powers in competition laws in the future, McKenzie said:

We’ll have more to say on that in coming weeks and months.

Calls for Amazon, Costco to fall under supermarket code of conduct

Global retail behemoths Amazon and Costco should be subject to the supermarket code of conduct alongside other large Australian companies, according to grocery giant Woolworths .

While Woolworths is already a signatory to the voluntary code and supports making it compulsory, the company believes more retailers should be subject to its terms. A spokesperson said:

The code should apply to all major retailers operating in Australia, including global retail giants such as Amazon and Costco, who have global revenues many times the size of Australian supermarkets.

Hardware retailer Bunnings and pharmacy Chemist Warehouse , who compete in grocery categories like household cleaning goods and personal care, should also fall under the code, Woolworths argued.

The interim review into the food and grocery code of conduct recommended the guidelines be made mandatory for supermarkets with yearly revenues exceeding $5bn, and for any breaches to be met with up to $10m in fines.

Coles , Woolworths and IGA owners Metcash all said they would consider the detail of the interim report. An Amazon spokesperson said the company was “pleased to play a role in driving competition in the general retail sector to the benefit of all Australians”.

Man dies in single-vehicle crash in Sydney

A man has died following a single-vehicle crash in Sydney’s lower north shore.

Just after 4am, emergency services responded to reports a vehicle had crashed on Epping Road at Willoughby .

A statement from NSW police confirmed the driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.

The incident caused heavy traffic along the Hills Motorway, and according to Live Traffic significant delays can still be expected hours later with heavy traffic conditions still ongoing.

Live Traffic says Mowbray Road is closed between Epping Road and Whitfield Avenue, with two of the three eastbound lanes closed along Epping Road.

Emergency services, Transport for NSW , a motorway crew and the crash investigation unit are all attending the incident.

Police officers have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and a report will be prepared for the coroner, a statement said.

Defence industry minister says Japan may collaborate on Aukus

The defence industry minister, Pat Conroy, has been speaking to ABC RN about the latest Aukus announcement – that Japan could potentially join the pact for pillar 2 (you can read more about this earlier in the blog ).

He said the three Aukus nations – Australia , the US and the UK – were “always interested in partnering with other countries where [it benefits the] the Aukus partners and the country in question”.

Conroy said the three Aukus nations have “a strong foundation” and that Japan is at the “forefront of developing cutting-edge defence capabilities”.

This is [about] collaborating on technology development on [Aukus pillar 2], on a project-by-project basis. It’s not about Japan being part of the Five Eyes intelligence community, it’s about technological collaboration where it makes sense for all parties involved.

Conroy was speaking to RN from Washington , where he is meeting with key officials and defence industry leaders this week.

Asked about Aukus more broadly, including pillar 1 (which is the nuclear-submarine component), Conroy said it was “all on track and we’re building steady momentum towards that”.

Craig Emerson resists guaranteeing grocery prices will fall

Still speaking on Sunrise, Craig Emerson was asked to give an estimate of how much prices would fall as a result of mandatory code?

I can’t give that estimate... because there is a separate inquiry being conduct by the ACCC itself into the pricing behaviour of supermarkets. So let’s have that inquiry run its course… but then knit in with my inquiry, and I have been working with the ACCC all the way along with this of this.

Q : Give Australians a ballpark [figure], what do you reckon?

You have half of the equation, right. I am dealing with the suppliers. The ACCC will be dealing with the relationship between the supermarkets and the customers. Why would I now predict the outcome of that? That is an impossible task. Mission impossible.

Q : Can you guarantee prices will fall?

Well, they should fall and I don’t know what is going to happen to international oil price prices, Nat. I don’t know if there is going to be an expansion of the war in Ukraine. Want me to predict those too?

Craig Emerson responds to ‘Mickey-Mouse review’ criticism

The author behind a review of the food and grocery code of conduct has responded to comments from the opposition leader, Peter Dutton, that the interim report – released yesterday – was a “Mickey-Mouse review”.

The PM has said he was “absolutely confident” measures in the interim report would bring down prices at the checkout – you can read all the detail on it here . Dutton argue s the review was “predetermined”, with the results dictated by the treasurer. Jim Chalmers .

Craig Emerson , who conducted the review, was on Sunrise earlier and said it was a “pretty trivial position” to label it a “Mickey-Mouse review”.

… because this voluntary code was introduced under the previous government, of which Peter Dutton was a senior minister, and it was voluntary – still is – and that is going to change. But basically, there were no penalties in it. It is like saying the speed limit is 80km/hr but if you do 100km/hr that is fine.

Melbourne park asbestos test results to be revealed

Melburnians living near several parks are slated to find out whether the areas have been contaminated with asbestos, AAP reports.

The Environment Protection Authority is investigating after the cancer-causing substance was found at parks in the Hobsons Bay and Merri-bek council areas.

Inspectors have confirmed asbestos was found at the under-construction park at Hosken Reserve at North Coburg , the PJ Lynch Reserve at Altona North and the Donald McLean Reserve at Spotswood .

Lab results due this afternoon are expected to confirm contamination results for three others: PA Burns Reserve at Altona , GJ Hosken Reserve at Altona North and Crofts Reserve at Altona North.

It is unclear whether inspectors have already confirmed asbestos contamination at Shore Reserve at Pascoe Vale South .

Early investigations raised concerns the asbestos was being introduced to the parks through mulch deliveries, like the contaminated mulch crisis in NSW. But the regulator has said there was no evidence of that. The authority’s Duncan Pendrigh said:

Mulch producers are unlikely the source for this contamination. There may be something being introduced in the supply chain.

The pieces of confirmed asbestos found at the Melbourne parks so far have been bonded asbestos, rather than the more dangerous friable asbestos.

Aukus countries ‘considering’ working with Japan

Australia and its Aukus partners, the US and the UK, have announced they are considering working with Japan on pillar 2 of the defence deal.

The countries released a joint statement this morning, which said:

Since the inception of Aukus, our nations have been clear in our intent to engage others in pillar II projects as our work progresses … Recognising Japan’s strengths and its close bilateral defense partnerships with all three countries we are considering cooperation with Japan on Aukus pillar II advanced capability projects.

The lengthy statement details Aukus’ progress so far and upcoming plans, across both pillar 1 (nuclear-powered submarines) and pillar 2 (advanced capability development).

The Australian defence minister, Richard Marles , UK secretary of state for defence, Grant Shapps, and the US secretary of defense, Lloyd Austin, said that from the inception of ​Aukus, they intended to engage with other nations on pillar 2 projects:

Aukus partners have developed principles and models for additional partner engagement in individual Pillar II projects and will undertake consultations in 2024 with prospective partners regarding areas where they can contribute to, and benefit from, this historic work .

The statement makes it clear this is an intent to work with Japan, not a confirmation.

My Perfect Resume is third in my review of the best Australian resume builders. Let’s see how perfect it really is.

My Perfect Resume offers very nice resume templates. Like the Resume Now ones, they are geolocated to Australia.

  • The resume builder has a resume writing assistant that provides you with suggested content based on your target role.
  • The suggested phrases are pretty good but should not be confused for a finished product. They’re merely a starting point that you’ll need to edit.

The paid version of My Perfect Resume gives you access to the Proprietary Resume Check, which promises to pinpoint shortcomings and errors on your resume while offering suggestions for fixing them.

I took it for a test drive and am happy to report that it’s actually quite good.

Above: unlike many gimmicks often included with resume builders, My Perfect Resume’s Smart Apply algorithm provides legitimately good, actionable steps you can take to improve your resume.

My Perfect Resume ‘s cover letter builder is also great because it allows you to pull in your resume and use it as a departure point.

It asks you a series of questions and spits out a reasonably good cover letter. Like Resume Now, it can address gaps in your career history.

The main reason My Perfect Resume didn’t qualify for #1 and #2 spots in this review is the quality of its suggested phrases.

“Gifted marketing manager”? Come on.

The job search portal is available and is good in theory, but it does not pull in Australian jobs. Yep, it’s a gimmick, at least for our country.

My Perfect Resume costs $2.95 for 14 days, which then renews to $34.95 per month. Alternatively, you can pay $71.40 for an entire year, which renews once per year.

You also get a 14 money-back guarantee, so there’s zero risk in trying it out.

I feel that My Perfect Resume is neither here nor there. Its writing assistant lets it down, but its excellent cover letter builder somewhat offsets this.

In the pecking order of career marketing documents, a resume is much more important than a cover letter, which is why I’m not recommending My Perfect Resume higher until they improve the issues I’ve raised.

4. JobScan .

JobScan is unique because it gives you the resume builder for free, along with some basic optimisation tools.

Because JobScan’s core product is an ATS checker, you can use it for this purpose for free. Upload your existing resume, and it will provide you with actionable steps you need to take to improve it.

Look. JobScan’s main business is not a resume builder and becomes quite apparent as soon as you start using it.

The free resume templates are quite basic, meaning you will have a very plain-looking resume.

JobScan offers zero AI-powered assistance for writing your profile or job history; you must write everything from scratch.

The UX is convoluted.

Using JobScan reminds me of cars that were built in the late 1990s – lots of buttons with seemingly no clear logic behind their placement. As a result, finding your way around the interface takes a bit of time.

A free version of JobScan is available and gives you access to the resume builder and a limited number of monthly scans.

Unlocking full functionality costs $49.45 monthly or $89.95 every 3 months.

JobScan is an excellent resume optimisation tool (in fact, our team of professional resume writers uses it to optimise resumes we create for our clients), but its resume builder sucks.

I’m sorry to sound harsh, but it’s true.

Novoresume is a very funky-looking resume builder with very good branding. Does it live up to expectations? Let’s find out.

Novoresume is almost a free resume builder because it allows you to create and download a one-page resume without payment but will charge you for multi-page resumes and cover letters.

You don’t need to enter a credit card to get started and are immediately given access to 8 free resume templates, which are pretty good.

Novoresume is just a resume formatting tool. It’s a glorified (albeit very pretty) resume template that loads in a web browser. That’s all.

It loads, and you fill it out. There are no writing suggestions and no additional job search tools.

To be fair, its “Optimizer” functionality has good intentions, but the tips it provides aren’t a good fit for Australia’s job market.

Novoresume will charge you the following for the pleasure of using it:

  • $19.95 for 1 month
  • $39.95 for 3 months
  • $99.95 for 12 months.

A 14-day money-back guarantee gives you peace of mind.

Novoresume is a great option if you want a free resume builder to create a one-page resume. I suspect it’s very popular with students and recent graduates.

Serious professionals with more complicated backgrounds should look at more sophisticated resume builders like Resume.io.

Resume Builders To Avoid.

These two products need a lot of improvement before they can compete with the best resume builders on the Australian market.

1. VisualCV.

On the surface, VisualCV is pretty good. It includes a cover letter maker, a personal website builder and a “Career Journal” to record your career achievements in real-time.

The good first impressions continue for some time after you sign up.

A user-friendly, intuitive interface offers sample content that is quite generic but is much better than starting with a blank page.

Its resume import feature is both useful and effective and only made one mistake with dates when importing my current resume.

Help is at hand from inside the app, both in the form of a knowledgebase and the ability to ask real humans a question.

Then the issues become apparent.

  • Resume templates are not a very good fit for Australia, with photos included by default on every one.
  • The design vibes of the resume templates aren’t very serious, either. The look and feel may appeal to hairdressers but certainly not corporate Australian managers.
  • The website builder is good in theory but is a gimmick in reality. I don’t see anyone serious about their career using it to build their online one-pager. (If you want a personal website, use a website builder instead).
  • A career journal is also a good idea in theory, but would I pay a monthly subscription to keep it around? Not really. A Word doc works just as well.

VisualCV offers upsells to professional resume writing services from within the app, which I suspect is the main reason for the resume builder’s existence.

In my experience, resume writers that you can hire via global resume builder platforms are not worth the money, as they tend to get outsourced overseas. Get a local Australian resume writer if you want a good result.

While the free version of VisualCV is reasonably good, it’s limited to one resume only. The paid version unlocks unlimited resumes, 30 (very good) templates and the ability to export to Word.

Pricing is very straightforward, with either a quarterly or monthly payment available for $45 or $24, respectively.

Remember that this is in USD, so you’ll need to add about 40% to get Australian dollars.

In summary, it’s an OK resume builder but isn’t very well suited to the Australian job market and is outgunned by much better options.

2. ResuMonk.

Resumonk is dead in the water. Its busy interface looks like it hasn’t been updated for a long time, its templates look dated, and the functionality is quite substandard by 2024 standards.

  • There’s no writing assistan t, no prompts, no sample content – just boxes that ask you to start writing.
  • In that sense , ResuMonk is more of a resume formatting tool than a builder.
  • Resume templates are quite dated-looking, too. I found a template that I liked, but the margins were wonky. Unfortunately, there was no way to adjust them.

ResuMonk gives almost nothing for free.

Even though you can build your resume in the free version, you’re limited to one (pretty ordinary-looking) template. Moreover, the free version slaps an unsightly “Created Using Resumonk” footer at the bottom of your resume.

Pricing is in two tiers: $29 for one year or $99 for a lifetime. By paying, you remove Resumonk branding, get a full set of 20 templates, and gain the ability to export to .docx.

Is An Online Resume Builder Worth It?

Yes, as long as it has the following features:

  • Writing assistant to help you overcome writing block
  • Resume templates that are aligned to the expectations of Australian hiring managers.
  • Job search tools to help you streamline your job search workflow

Some of the best resume builders cost as little as $2.95, a borderline negligible amount in the context of your career.

For this small amount of money, you’ll shortcut the process of writing your resume by hours (or maybe days) and avoid having to stare at a blank page, overwhelmed with thoughts like:

  • “ What’s the most important thing to say here?”
  • “ What should I leave out?”
  • “ Am I boasting too much?”
  • “ Am I underselling myself?”

I recommend choosing a resume builder that allows you to create your resume before it asks for payment. This means you only pay when (or if) you’re happy with the result – and once you decide to export the resume, without watermarks, into a recruiter-friendly format.

My Final Verdict About Online Resume Builders .

My main takeaway from this review is that a good resume builder acts as a reasonably effective resume layout platform.

It can assist greatly with the design of your resume, bringing much-needed simplicity to the overall aesthetic.

In that sense, it helps you avoid having a clunky, overloaded-with-text resume that looks like it’s stuck in the 1990s. You know the type:

Having said that, it’s important to note that the visual presentation of a resume is a secondary factor. You will not get a job just because your resume looks nice.

This is where an online resume builder begins to show cracks.

Like most software platforms, it is inextricably tied to, and limited by, the GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out) paradigm. That is, the quality of your input determines the quality of the resume builder’s output.

Let me reiterate this point again: those words are good enough for you to send to a prospective employer. You must use one of the resume writing guides I linked above to make your resume commercially meaningful and aligned to your target role.

Police are hoping the use of speciality cadaver dogs will help them in the search for missing mum Samantha Murphy.

Ms Murphy, 51, was last seen about 7am on February 4 after leaving her Ballarat home to go on a morning run.

Police allege she was killed on the same day, but her body has yet to be recovered.

Patrick Orren Stephenson, 22, has been charged with her murder.

Officers entered the Enfield State Park on Thursday, as Victoria Police said the search would focus on an area “highlighted by intelligence derived from a number of sources”.

Dirt bikes and a NSW Police cadaver dog are involved with the search of the dense national park.

Police told the Herald Sun it was the first time search crews had used a cadaver dog.

It’s understood NSW and Queensland are the only two states in Australia with cadaver detection dog capabilities.

Detective Acting Superintendent Mark Hatt said Thursday’s search would involve “a significant number of detectives from the Missing Persons Squad and police from a number of specialist areas”.

“Since Samantha’s disappearance over two months ago, a range of searches and other inquiries have been undertaken in the Ballarat area as part of this investigation.

“This includes extensive large scale searches such as we have planned this week but also smaller targeted searches focused in very specific areas,” he said.

“I want to assure those in the Ballarat community that police remain focused on doing everything we can to return Samantha to her family.”

However, there is a light police presence on the ground Thursday, with only four police vehicles seen in the search staging area during the day.

Police have previously combed large swathes of the Canadian Forest area since Ms Murphy’s disappearance, with dedicated locals also joining in the search.

Officers have asked civilian search groups to not join Thursday’s new effort.

Thursday’s development bears similarities to a search of a new area of bushland on March 20, sparked by “recently-obtained intelligence”, police said at the time.

Similarly, volunteer searchers and the public were urged to stay away from that area.

That search area was east of the Buninyong Golf Club, the focus of initial search efforts where Ms Murphy’s phone last pinged.

The search then moved to Mount Clear, further north of Buninyong and closer to Ms Murphy’s home, without any success.

Ballarat mother Samantha Murphy was last seen going for a jog, and her family reported her missing when she did not show up to brunch.

Mr Stephenson was arrested at a Scotsburn home early on March 6 and charged with murder the following day.

Police remained tight-lipped about the methods used to identify the accused man, saying they would not go into “operational matters” but added the investigation remained ongoing.

Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said at the time a “painstaking and methodical investigation” led to the alleged killer’s arrest.

“I’m not going to identify what has specifically led us to this man other than to say it has come about from painstaking detective work with great assistance from the public,” Mr Patton said, adding police would allege the accused acted alone.

“In the interview with the suspect, he has not disclosed to police where her body is,” he said in early March.

At the time of the arrest and murder charge, Ballarat Mayor Des Hudson said the community was relieved and devastated at the development.

He said he didn’t know the man charged with Ms Murphy’s murder personally but described his family as “lovely people”.

Mr Stephenson’s father played 15 AFL games with Geelong and Richmond from 2012 to 2014.

“Mum’s a really strong woman and she’s far too determined to give up this fight,” she said.

“Mum we love you so much and we miss you … please come home soon.”

“People just don’t vanish into thin air. Someone’s got to know something,” Mr Murphy said.

“Whether it be any little thing that you might think is relevant, just call the police and let them know.

“It’ll give us a bit of peace of mind, some hope,” he said.

As the search entered its fifth week, accounts of the Murphys’ generous spirit made headlines.

In 2019, Ms Murphy threw her support behind a former employee of her family-owned panel shop Inland Motor Body Works after he was jailed over a traffic offence. Jack Aston was sentenced to 2½ years imprisonment after he crashed a bus into Melbourne’s notoriously low Montague Street bridge, leaving six of the 14 passengers with serious injuries.

Patrick Orren Stephenson has been charged over Ms Murphy’s alleged murder.

Following an appeal verdict quashing his convictions, he was released from jail.

Ms Murphy and her husband were part of a community-led campaign, which included some of the injured passengers, which worked to prove the incident was nothing more than a tragic accident.

Mr Aston served 10 months in prison before his convictions were quashed.

A man had been granted bail at the time he was alleged to have killed his ex-girlfriend.

Victoria Police officers are launching a new search effort for the body of Samantha Murphy on Thursday - more than two months after the mother-of-three disappeared while on a run.

Victoria Police will conduct a "significant search of bushland" in the Enfield State Park area on Thursday as they resume the search for Samantha Murphy's body.

The new search area is about 8km from the Buninyong area, where police focused their search efforts in March, and almost 30km from where Ms Murphy is alleged to have been killed.

Police on Thursday said the new area was "highlighted by intelligence derived from a number of sources".

Ms Murphy, who was last seen leaving her Ballarat East home about 7am on Sunday, February 4 to go for a run, was allegedly murdered by 22-year-old Patrick Stephenson in Mount Clear that very same day.

In February, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton alleged there was a "deliberate attack" on the 51-year-old mother-of-three and that Stephenson had not disclosed where her body was to police.

Over the past two months, police have undergone extensive searches of the Canadian Forest area, where Ms Murphy was known to run.

Detective Acting Superintendent Mark Hatt, Crime Command said on Thursday the new search effort involves a significant number of detectives from the Missing Persons Squad and police from a number of specialist areas.

“Since Samantha’s disappearance over two months ago, a range of searches and other enquiries have been undertaken in the Ballarat area as part of this investigation," he said.

"This includes extensive large scale searches such as we have planned this week, but also smaller targeted searches focused in very specific areas.

A range of specialist units will join Missing Persons Squad investigators for Thursday's effort, including the Search and Rescue Squad, Mounted Branch, Dog Squad, Public Order Response Team and motorcyclists from Road Policing Command as well as local police from Western Region.

Ms Murphy's family have been informed of the new location.

Victoria Police said officers "continue to liaise closely" with the Murphy family amid the ongoing investigation.
