Online Adjunct Faculty positions are available to qualified applicants who reside in and are authorized to work in the United States with the exception of California. Minimum qualifications for each role will be clearly outlined in the respective job posting.

  • Please take a moment to explore our comprehensive list of academic programs. ( academic programs )

To support our new adjunct faculty's success in the SNHU classroom, new faculty are required to complete an asynchronous 3-week paid online training program. The online adjunct faculty training is delivered in a cohort model and requires active participation throughout each week. The training content is a blend of understanding SNHU's faculty expectations, best practices for teaching online, pedagogy, creating student-centered learning communities, and effectively using SNHU academic technologies. The course is delivered through our learning management system (Brightspace).

Our online adjunct faculty training is facilitated by dedicated faculty trainers who are experienced SNHU faculty members.

SNHU is passionate about promoting continued learning. Online adjunct faculty are offered ongoing training and professional development opportunities through COLT (Center for Online Learning and Teaching). In fact, many of COLT’s learning events award CEUs upon successful completion since COLT has achieved accreditation through the IACET (International association for Continuing Education and Training).

Course assignments are made by our scheduling team, with the guidance of the Associate Deans. Assignments are made on a term-by-term basis, approximately 8 weeks prior to the start of the term, with adjunct instructors allowed to teach up to 10 sections in an academic year. While we try to accommodate as many scheduling requests as we can, we are not able to guarantee a regular schedule, or teaching assignments every term.

Our online adjunct faculty are instrumental in ensuring that students are successful in the class. We do this through:

  • Student Support : Provide personalized, 1-on-1 assistance and guidance to students, which also necessitates responding to student messages within 24 hours.
  • Course Feedback : Offer constructive feedback on assignments and course performance, for every assignment every week. There are 1-2 assignments that must be graded every week. grading is due within 7 days of when the assignments are due.
  • Timely Responses : Respond to student inquiries within 24 hours.
  • Active Online Presence : Engage in the online classroom consistently throughout the week. This is primarily done through the course discussion board. Unless otherwise indicated, faculty are expected to actively engage is every course discussion.
  • Flexibility : Accommodate diverse student backgrounds, experiences, schedules, and time zones.
  • Effective Communication : Clearly communicate concepts and foster open dialogue in all areas of the course. This will include weekly course announcements, discussion board engagement, grading feedback, and other communications with students.
  • Collaboration : Work with advising and academic teams to enhance student success.
  • Commitment to Student Success : Strive to help students achieve their academic goals.
  • Professional Development : Stay updated with teaching methods and subject knowledge.

SNHU online courses run on a term schedule . There are 6 undergraduate terms in an academic year, lasting 8 weeks each and 5 graduate terms, lasting 10 weeks each.

The standard compensation for most courses is $2,200 per 8-week undergraduate course and $2,500 per 10-week graduate course. Nursing has a separate compensation structure.

Undergraduate and graduate adjuncts are paid biweekly and are considered W2 employees.

  • Asynchronous : Courses are designed for asynchronous learning, providing flexibility and autonomy for our learners. Students engage with materials and assignments on their own schedule, while still adhering to course deadline/requirements. Asynchronous setup accommodates diverse schedules and time zones. Courses include a number of weeks and each week includes assignments that are due by the end of that week.
  • Class Size : Most courses have 25-30 students, promoting interaction and engagement. Some courses, such as writing intensive courses, may have lower course caps.
  • Course Design and Consistency : Pre-built courses maintain uniformity in topics, grading, and rubrics. This format also ensures all students meet program objectives for accreditation.
  • Supplementing Content : The course is not developed by the online adjunct instructor. Adjuncts are encouraged to bring the content to life through sharing their experiences and expertise.
  • Course Materials : Required Textbooks and resources are offered in a variety of forms, including digital textbooks, digital courseware, and physical hard copies. Required course materials and textbooks are provided for the faculty free of charge prior to the term beginning.

Why Graders Choose Marco Learning

Convenient and flexible.

No more commuting or finding a carpool. Work from the comfort of your home or dorm or favorite coffee shop.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Giving students personalized feedback has one of the biggest impacts on their learning.

PRACTICAL, HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE

Develop professional skills and receive frequent feedback and coaching.

How It Works

Claim an open assignment on the Assignment Board.

Grade and provide feedback on the student work using a rubric, prompt and the teacher’s grading instructions.

Wait for the teacher to approve your work and provide a rating and review just for you

Graders grade assignments that require high-quality, rubric-based scoring and feedback. Most assignments we support are writing assignments for English and Social Studies classes, and Graders should expect this to be the primary work available to them. For standard writing assignments, you’ll score and provide feedback on each student’s strengths and areas for growth, as well as share summary thoughts for the teacher on the class’s overall strengths and growths. We support some science, math, psychology, computer science, and other subject work as well. Graders can apply for additional qualifications to gain access to these subjects.

Grading is flexible – pick up the assignments that work for your schedule! We ask that Graders be prepared to dedicate an average of at least 6 hours per week during the school year (Sept-Dec and Feb-May). That equates to grading approximately four class assignments per month. Regular grading is win-win: Teachers and students benefit from your practice and experience, and you’ll build habits that make the work easier and more efficient

We open applications during two application periods. Fall semester applications will be open mid-July through mid-September, and spring semester applications will be open early January through early March. ( These windows are subject to change based on Grader needs ) You can expect to hear back from us about one week after submitting your Application Activity.

You can claim assignments on the Assignment Board or you may receive requests for assignments in the grade levels and subjects you are qualified to grade. Graders can improve their rankings with proven track records of effective feedback and dependability.

The Marco Learning team reviews every assignment before sending it along to the teacher. We’ll evaluate how well your work meets expectations for effective feedback and provide ongoing coaching and development to ensure highly effective feedback for students. The classroom teacher you are working with on a given assignment also has the opportunity to rate you on four metrics: quality of feedback, quality of scoring, professionalism, and an overall rating. The teacher also provides qualitative feedback and coaching to help you improve.

There is no in-person interaction; all the assignments and rubrics are digital, and communication occurs through the website. This means that you can work wherever and whenever you like.

The starting pay rate for Graders is $14 per hour of grading. Graders who prove to consistently meet or exceed expectations can earn $16 per hour. In addition, some advanced work comes with an hourly pay increase, and there can be “surge pricing” for certain courses or assignments with short turnaround times. Grading time calculations are based on assignment length and any special teacher requests, and they include time to become familiar with the prompt and rubric.

Graders love Marco Learning

“The system is easy to use and the feedback and support from the team is awesome! I enjoy the amount of work that was allowed for pick up and the process for raises/promotions.”

– Psychology Masters student at Southern New Hampshire University

I recommend grading to everyone I meet. I’ve had this job for three years now, and I never plan on leaving. I kept it when I started my first full-time job for extra cash, and it ended up getting me through an unexpected layoff from the pandemic. It’s made me a better writer and editor, and I regularly use it in job interviews. Plus, I love getting to give students specific and actionable feedback that I wish I had received. I seriously love working here, and I never want to leave!”

– Music and Business major at the University of Florida

“By being taught to grade others’ papers by strictly following a rubric and making sure student writing exemplifies what’s required, I have been able to greatly improve on my own writing which has definitely been noticed by my professors in class.”

– Political Science major at Purchase College

“I love the feeling that I contribute to the K-12 learning experience for students. The Marco Learning team’s communication is great and personal! I thought it was a robot when I first started, but nope! Graders also receive coaching for how to give feedback that is stellar!”

– Music Education major at the University of Central Florida

“I have loved working for Marco Learning! It provides a great opportunity to build my own schedule and work a convenient part time job from home. I also love how it enables me to practice my own writing and editing skills, and I enjoy helping make a difference in the lives of middle and high school students.”

– Neuroscience major at College of William and Mary

“I love getting to view students’ work and provide them with specific, actionable feedback! As an aspiring teacher, I recognize how important it is to provide students with feedback on their written work. Thank you to Marco Learning for allowing this platform to be very accessible and for always encouraging Graders!”

– English Literature major at the University of Central Florida

“Marco Learning is a platform that simultaneously provides convenience and benefits to teachers, K-12 students, and college students. College students are able to have a convenient and flexible part-time job, while teachers are able to devote more time to other aspects of their job and K-12 students receive high-quality feedback that will allow them to grow rapidly.”

– Human Biology major at USC

“Marco Learning does a wonderful job at encouraging the graders to utilize our full potential to truly help both the students and teachers. Additionally, I have felt cared for as an individual during my time with Marco Learning as opposed to a disposable worker as I have at many other jobs.”

– Chemistry major at University of Alabama at Birmingham

When I was in college, I had one of the best jobs for college students I could possibly ask for. I was a team lead at my school’s indoor recreation center, and I loved my job. As a team lead, I took my job pretty seriously.

It was my responsibility to train the new employees, manage events, and make sure everyone had a good time. Even though I loved my job, it was tough balancing the rigid work schedule with my class load and extracurriculars.

College is a busy time.

Although working through college can help offset some big expenses, between classes, volunteer work, and socializing, it can be difficult to fit a rigid work schedule into the equation. That’s where online jobs come in.

1. Textbook flipper

Bookscouter homepage

What it pays: varies, based on what types and how many books you’re selling

Textbooks are expensive, sometimes costing hundreds of dollars. But what do you do when you’re done with them? Many students sell them back to their university bookstore for a few dollars, but there’s a way you can recoup more than that. In fact, if you’re a savvy shopper, you might even be able to buy books at a discount and sell them for profit.

Using book buy-back sites like Bookscouter , you can search for the best price on your textbooks to maximize how much money you get back. You can also search for cheap books to flip for extra money by selling them to your classmates.

If this sounds like the side hustle for you, you can learn more about it in our Bookscouter review .

2. Social media manager

What it pays: $15 to $40/hour

If you’re already spending hours per week on social media, why not get paid for some of that time? Almost every business uses social media and many need help managing it. That’s why they hire independently contracted social media managers .

Social media managers help build brand awareness by curating content, building relationships with potential customers, and driving new leads. Your job is to be the online voice of the company.

Get started as a social media manager by approaching local businesses and telling them about your services. Reach out to businesses you already frequent such as yoga studios, coffee shops, boutiques, and restaurants.

Focus on which social media platforms you’re most comfortable with, and talk about how you can use it to grow their business and reach new customers.

What it pays: varies (some bloggers make $100,000+ per month)

As a blogger, you’ll produce written content that you share with an audience. The key to making money as a blogger is to write content that provides value to your readers. For instance, rather than writing a personal recap on your trip to Hawaii, write a post titled “7 Things You Need to Know Before Vacationing in Hawaii” instead. It’s both intriguing and helpful.

Before you start your blog, choose a topic you enjoy writing about, and make it specific. You want to target your audience and write for them. It’s okay to concentrate on a small niche rather than a large one because you can’t always have broad appeal.

Once you have your topic, write down at least 20 blog post ideas, then start writing your first five posts. This is a good test of whether or not you actually enjoy writing on your chosen subject.

After you’ve brainstormed some ideas, the next step is to choose a host for your website. HostGator is a popular option for beginner bloggers. It’s not free — plans start at $2.75 per month — but it’s an essential first step.

See our step-by-step guide to starting a profitable blog to get started.

4. Freelance writer

What it pays: $50 to $500+ per article

Don’t worry about your credentials or experience if you want to work as a freelance writer. If you have good grammatical skills and an ability to write well, you can do it.

Freelance writing is a flexible and lucrative way to make money in college. And you might enjoy seeing your byline online or in a print publication. Having an online presence in the form of your own blog can help you land high-paying clients faster and serve as a portfolio for your work. Otherwise, you can get started as a freelance writer by picking up clients on Upwork.

Once you’ve got some work to show and testimonials to back you up, start pitching to jobs on Problogger and Freelance Writing Jobs.

5. Product reviewer

InboxDollars Homepage

What it pays: $2 to $10 (or more) per review

If you enjoy trying new products and writing about them, then consider doing it for money. There are plenty of legitimate sites that will pay you for your reviews .

To do so, you’ll need to register with websites like LifePoints and InboxDollars and answer a few questions about your demographics. Based on the information you provide, you’ll receive products to test and review. You can share your reviews on social media, on the website, in a blog, or on a survey.

And if you sign up with a site like InboxDollars, you’ll find other ways to make money in college including taking surveys, playing games, or even watching videos.

It doesn’t require a big time commitment to make money as a product tester, and you can combine it with a few other ideas on this list to earn even more.

6. Virtual assistant

What it pays: $15 to $200+ per hour

Virtual assistants (VAs) are hired by businesses that prefer to outsource tasks that don’t need to be done in-house. This can include bookkeeping, data entry, or customer services. The amount you can charge as a virtual assistant depends on your skillset and experience. And if you have specialized skills like managing Facebook ads or email marketing, you can charge a premium rate.

Start working as a virtual assistant by making a list of services you can offer; then create profiles on Zirtual and Virtual Assistant Networking to get the word out about your offerings.

For more instruction, professional virtual assistant Gina Horkey offers a free workshop on 5 Steps to Become a Virtual Assistant (without spamming your friends and family on social media).

7. Graphic designer

What it pays: $25 to $50 per hour

You don’t have to be an art major to make money online as a graphic designer. As long as you have an eye for detail and are willing to put in some time to learn, you can use a free web design tool like Canva to create beautiful and unique designs for your clients. Small businesses need appealing graphics for everything including business cards, logos, social media images, and more.

If you don’t have the necessary skills but still want to try your hand at graphic design, consider signing up for the free Graphic Design Basics course on Skillshare. After you’ve got the fundamentals down, you can move on to a more detailed course like Graphic Design for Beginners Part 1 . This course goes more in-depth about how to apply the principles of design to real-world projects.

Once you’re ready to get started, reach out to small businesses in your area. Let them know what services you offer (business cards, branding, flyer design, etc.) and how you can help them increase brand awareness. Bring a sample of your work.

You can also reach out to some of your favorite bloggers or friends who blog to see if they can use your services for Pinterest or social media images. Sites like 99designs are also good resources for newer freelance graphic designers.

8. Proofreader

Proofread Anywhere Free Workshop Page

What it pays: $10 to $45 per hour

If you have an eye for spotting grammar and punctuation mistakes, consider working as a proofreader. Proofreading is usually the final stage of review before a piece of content is published and typically involves checking for spelling, grammatical, and punctuation errors, as well as typos.

It’s separate from editing and is one of the best online jobs for college students.

If you’re interested, check out Proofread Anywhere  for some free seven-day courses. The course’s creator, Caitlyn Pyle, started her own proofreading business and used it to make a living online while traveling abroad.

You can also begin booking proofreading jobs by setting up a freelancer profile online. There’s no shortage of opportunities on Fiverr, Upwork, and Freelancer.

9. Resume writer

What it pays: $50 to $75 per resume/$10 to $25 per hour

If you’re good at putting a positive spin on someone’s work history or know how to make a resume stand out , you can turn it into a lucrative side hustle helping your friends write theirs. And if they’ve used an online template or already have a solid resume, you can offer resume proofreading services to make sure it’s error-free.

The easiest way to start offering your resume writing services is through freelance sites or by word-of-mouth. Let your friends know you’re available to help them polish their resumes before they apply for that post-college job or internship, and ask them to spread the word.

10. Tutoring

VIPKID is a side hustle favorite of teachers looking to make extra money

What it pays: $14 to $20+ per hour

Teaching or tutoring online is a perfect online job for college students. The best part about tutoring is that you’re reinforcing what you’ve already learned, so if you tutor subjects in your major, it’s like getting paid to study.

If you want to start offering your tutoring services online, here are the best places to start:

  • VIPKid – only available to graduate students since you need a bachelor’s degree; pay is $14 to $22 per hour
  • Wyzant – tutors set their own rates
  • Chegg – tutors start at $20 per hour

If you need a break from school, you can tutor or teach in your other areas of expertise, like an instrument or sport. Advertise your services on social media, in student centers, or in the community around your school.

11. Web developer

What it pays: $20 to $75 per hour

Regardless of your major, you can build up a side hustle as a web developer. If you have minimal skills, you can get started by taking an online training like The Complete Web Developer Course on Udemy.

This course will teach you everything you need to know to start booking clients and can pay for itself in as short as a week. Although one class won’t make you a professional coder, you will get a good foundation and the confidence to take on your first clients.

For new web developers, it’s best to start with smaller projects like editing existing websites rather than building new ones. This is a good way to practice the most popular coding languages (along with WordPress) and how they work together to form a website.

You can begin earning money by bidding on projects on freelance sites like PeoplePerHour, Upwork, and Fiverr.

12. Survey taker

swagbucks homepage gift card offer

What it pays: $0.10 to $20 per survey

Surveys aren’t always the most fun gig, but they are one of the easiest online jobs for college students. Survey sites collect consumer data that companies use to improve their products. That’s why they’re so eager to pay regular people for their opinions.

In just a few minutes a day, you can make a decent side income with paid online surveys.

One of our favorites is Swagbucks because of the many different ways to earn including watching videos, taking surveys, playing games, and browsing the web.

To get started as a survey taker, create an account for each site you plan to use. Since you won’t be eligible for every survey, you’ll earn more by signing up with several sites.

13. Search engine evaluator

What it pays: $12 to $15 per hour

Google isn’t always perfect. That’s why it, and other search engines, relies on real people to provide feedback on the relevance and usefulness of their results.

These types of online jobs for college students usually range between 10 to 30 hours per week and can easily work around a busy college schedule.

Find search engine evaluator jobs on:

Make sure you follow the application process and answer any questions as honestly as possible. You also want to be realistic about the amount of time you can commit to this type of job. If you only have a few hours a week available but the position requires 20, you might want to search for another side hustle.

14. Fiverr gigs

What it pays: $5 to $995 per gig

Five dollars doesn’t sound like much, but for tasks that take just a few minutes of your time, it adds up fast. If you have a specialized skill, you can charge more.

Projects on Fiverr range from $5 to $995, and you can offer three versions of your services at three different price points. Many Fiverr sellers have turned it into their full-time gig, while others use it to make money on the side.

Popular services available on Fiverr include writing, web development, and graphic design. You can also do something unique or offbeat like prank calls or celebrity impressions.

15. Data entry

What it pays: $10 to $17 per hour

Data entry is relatively stress-free and typically doesn’t require any specialized skills, which makes it a great online job for college students who don’t want a serious commitment.

Check out these websites for online data entry jobs :

  • DionData Solutions
  • The Smart Crowd

You might want to check your typing speed before applying for a data entry job. If you’re a slow typer, it’ll be difficult to turn your projects around on time.

What it pays: varies (some gamers earn $10,000+ per month)

If you’re an avid gamer or love playing games on your phone, you might be able to turn that into a lucrative side hustle with flexible hours. You can start a gaming blog, create a YouTube channel, compete in gaming tournaments, or even play games on sites like Mistplay to earn cash.

You might even be able to find a part-time job in the gaming industry, which is helpful if you’re in a major like graphic design or computer science.

Getting started with this online job is fairly easy; all you need is your phone or laptop, a reliable internet connection, and a few hours a week.

17. Social media influencer

What it pays: varies based on nature of campaign (some influencers can earn six figures per month)

Lots of companies will pay people to promote their products and services on social media. If you have a large Instagram, TikTok, or Twitter following, you can take advantage of this and earn some extra money. And for some campaigns or companies, a few followers might be all you need.

18. Amazon seller

What it pays: varies

Amazon isn’t just for two-day shipping and watching Fleabag or The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel . In fact, there are many ways you can make money on Amazon .

Whether you’re working as a delivery driver, selling your handmade goods, selling your own eBooks, or finding micro jobs on MTurk, there are plenty of options for an Amazon side hustle. You can also resell items like books, sell products as a wholesaler, or join Amazon Affiliates to earn money through your blog or social media.

There is no cap on how much you can earn selling on Amazon; and if you’re able to take advantage of several of its programs, you can turn this into a lucrative online side hustle. Just make sure you’re following the program’s rules and guidelines. If you don’t, Amazon can dismiss you from working with the company.

Online Jobs Often Offer More Flexibility

Working online is the best setup for most college students, and you don’t always need any experience to succeed. The gigs are flexible, usually pay better than campus and other brick-and-mortar jobs, and you don’t have to work on your holiday break.

If you find something you’re really passionate about, you could even turn your college side gig into your full-time career.

University life comes with its share of challenges. One of these is writing longer assignments that require higher information, communication and critical thinking skills than what you might have been used to in high school. Here are five tips to help you get ahead.

1. Use all available sources of information

Beyond instructions and deadlines, lecturers make available an increasing number of resources. But students often overlook these.

For example, to understand how your assignment will be graded, you can examine the rubric . This is a chart indicating what you need to do to obtain a high distinction, a credit or a pass, as well as the course objectives – also known as “learning outcomes”.

Other resources include lecture recordings, reading lists, sample assignments and discussion boards. All this information is usually put together in an online platform called a learning management system (LMS). Examples include Blackboard , Moodle , Canvas and iLearn . Research shows students who use their LMS more frequently tend to obtain higher final grades.

If after scrolling through your LMS you still have questions about your assignment, you can check your lecturer’s consultation hours.

2. Take referencing seriously

Plagiarism – using somebody else’s words or ideas without attribution – is a serious offence at university. It is a form of cheating.

Hands on a keyboard using the Ctrl C copy function

In many cases, though, students are unaware they have cheated. They are simply not familiar with referencing styles – such as APA , Harvard , Vancouver , Chicago , etc – or lack the skills to put the information from their sources into their own words.

To avoid making this mistake, you may approach your university’s library, which is likely to offer face-to-face workshops or online resources on referencing. Academic support units may also help with paraphrasing.

You can also use referencing management software, such as EndNote or Mendeley . You can then store your sources, retrieve citations and create reference lists with only a few clicks. For undergraduate students, Zotero has been recommended as it seems to be more user-friendly.

Using this kind of software will certainly save you time searching for and formatting references. However, you still need to become familiar with the citation style in your discipline and revise the formatting accordingly.

3. Plan before you write

If you were to build a house, you wouldn’t start by laying bricks at random. You’d start with a blueprint. Likewise, writing an academic paper requires careful planning: you need to decide the number of sections, their organisation, and the information and sources you will include in each.

Research shows students who prepare detailed outlines produce higher-quality texts. Planning will not only help you get better grades, but will also reduce the time you spend staring blankly at the screen thinking about what to write next.

During the planning stage, using programs like OneNote from Microsoft Office or Outline for Mac can make the task easier as they allow you to organise information in tabs. These bits of information can be easily rearranged for later drafting. Navigating through the tabs is also easier than scrolling through a long Word file.

4. Choose the right words

Which of these sentences is more appropriate for an assignment?

a. “This paper talks about why the planet is getting hotter”, or b. “This paper examines the causes of climate change”.

The written language used at university is more formal and technical than the language you normally use in social media or while chatting with your friends. Academic words tend to be longer and their meaning is also more precise. “Climate change” implies more than just the planet “getting hotter”.

To find the right words, you can use SkELL , which shows you the words that appear more frequently, with your search entry categorised grammatically. For example, if you enter “paper”, it will tell you it is often the subject of verbs such as “present”, “describe”, “examine” and “discuss”.

Another option is the Writefull app, which does a similar job without having to use an online browser.

5. Edit and proofread

If you’re typing the last paragraph of the assignment ten minutes before the deadline, you will be missing a very important step in the writing process: editing and proofreading your text. A 2018 study found a group of university students did significantly better in a test after incorporating the process of planning, drafting and editing in their writing.

Hand holding red pen to edit paper.

You probably already know to check the spelling of a word if it appears underlined in red. You may even use a grammar checker such as Grammarly . However, no software to date can detect every error and it is not uncommon to be given inaccurate suggestions.

So, in addition to your choice of proofreader, you need to improve and expand your grammar knowledge. Check with the academic support services at your university if they offer any relevant courses.

Written communication is a skill that requires effort and dedication. That’s why universities are investing in support services – face-to-face workshops, individual consultations, and online courses – to help students in this process. You can also take advantage of a wide range of web-based resources such as spell checkers, vocabulary tools and referencing software – many of them free.

Improving your written communication will help you succeed at university and beyond.

How to Choose an Online Computer Science Program

Choosing the right online computer science program will depend on your reasons for choosing an online CS degree. Are you focused on flexibility, price or prestige? Narrow down your options for online computer science programs by considering the following factors:

  • Accreditation: The school you choose must be an accredited institution. Regionally accredited schools are a good choice, and ABET accreditation for a computer science program is a reputable marker of quality.
  • Cost: Look at the overall tuition you’ll need to pay, and consider whether speeding up your progress (such as with an accelerated program) will save you money. If you’re looking for an online degree completion program, check whether your current credits will transfer.
  • Reputation: A university’s reputation doesn’t guarantee the sort of education you’ll receive, but it could open doors to post-graduate employment.
  • Outcomes: Regarding employment, check out how graduates fare on the job market, what their average salary is and what kinds of employers hire them.
  • Student support: Another factor that can determine your success at an online university is the level of student support you’ll receive. Look for schools that offer tutoring and student services as well as career coaching and support.

How To Apply

Applying to an online computer science program is much like applying to any other online college: You’ll provide your personal information, academic history, letters of reference and other documents. And you may need to pay an application fee. When you’ve chosen a school that seems to meet your needs, you can apply online using the following steps.

  • Submit the correct application: You may need to use a specific application type depending on the number of transferable credits you have. Some schools require you to apply using an application specific to the online program, while others accept both the Common App and direct application. Check carefully that you’re using the right application for the program you’re interested in and your previous college credits (if any).
  • Transcript: Typically, you’ll need to provide information about your prior academic history, whether that’s your official high school transcript, your previous bachelor’s degree, or something else. The school will specify during the application process what documentation is required.
  • Test scores: If your application requires standardized test scores or college placement information, you may need to arrange to have these sent to the school directly from the testing service. This is more likely if you’ve graduated from high school within the past few years.
  • Essay: Some applicants may be required to submit an essay for admission. Take the time to craft a personalized essay according to the application prompt and submit it in the proper format.
  • Track your application: You may be able to complete your application in stages, saving it and resuming your work later. After you’ve submitted your application, paid any necessary application fees, and uploaded your documents, track your application progress to make sure you don’t miss any requests for more documentation from the school.

Should You Enroll in a Computer Science Program?

A computer science degree can lay the foundation for your career and help uplevel your salary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) , the average annual salary for computer science and information technology professionals was $100,530 as of May 2022, more than double the median annual salary of $46,310.

But incomes are never guaranteed, and you’ll need to weigh the price of your education against your future earnings prospects as well as the opportunity cost of spending two years or more studying for a new degree. As you consider whether enrolling in an online computer science program is worth it, keep in mind the following factors.

Career Opportunities

The number of open roles in computer science is expected to outpace many other fields, with an average of 377,500 openings projected each year, according to the BLS. Completing an online computer science degree can open the door to new jobs and even whole new careers, including programming, software development, data analysis and cybersecurity.

Income Potential

According to data from the U.S. Department of Education , graduates of our top 10 online computer science programs earn an average of $50,876 to $96,375 annually in the years after completing their degree.

Online Convenience

If your question isn’t whether you should get a computer science degree, but whether to complete it online, consider how important convenience and flexibility are to you. If you’re a busy working adult with family or volunteer commitments, online classes might best fit your schedule. Online schools also allow you to skip the hassle of meeting on campus, so you won’t need to worry about commuting, parking or paying for room and board.

Cost is often another factor when deciding what degree to earn and where to earn it. While not every choice on our list has a discounted price tag, you’ll often find that online colleges offer a more affordable path to a degree compared to traditional residential schools.

How To Pay for Your Degree

If you want to get your CS degree online, you have a few options for paying for it. Filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can help you and your university determine whether you’re eligible for federal student loans, grants or other types of aid. Some universities may require you to complete a CSS Profile, which helps determine whether you’re eligible for non-federal student aid.

  • Financial aid: This includes federal Direct Loans, which may be subsidized or unsubsidized by the federal government. These loans must be repaid after you graduate. PLUS loans are federal loans for graduate or professional students or parents of students. Federal grants, such as Pell grants, do not need to be repaid. Federal work-study provides employment which helps students pay for school.
  • Scholarships: Scholarships may be given by the school, a department within the school, or an outside organization to help you pay for tuition. They don’t need to be repaid but they can be taxable in some instances.
  • Employer funding: Many employers offer tuition assistance to employees to help pay for college, although the amount and timeline may depend on whether you’re full-time or part-time and how long you’ve been with the company, among other factors.
  • Tuition assistance: Military members may be able to use Tuition Assistance to pay for college while on duty, up to $4,500 per year depending on the branch.

Accreditation for Online Computer Science Degrees

A university’s accreditation shows it complies with certain quality standards as determined by the accrediting agency. Choosing an accredited online school helps you ensure that you’re paying for high-quality instruction, not a diploma mill, and it’s also a requirement to receive federal financial aid.

For online computer science degrees, the program’s accreditation can be important too. Many CS programs are accredited by ABET, which evaluates the course content, assessments, student outcomes and several other factors. A CS program that is ABET-accredited has demonstrated that it meets these standards.

The only difference is that you’ve completed your education remotely instead of attending classes on campus. According to the U.S. Department of Education , the median salary for computer and IT jobs tops six figures and more than 680,000 jobs in this field are expected to be added by 2031. So an online computer science degree could be a valuable investment in your career.

Is It Better to Learn Computer Science Online or In Person?

The best learning format for computer science will depend on your preferences as a student. If you prefer to study at your own pace, need more flexibility and have the discipline to manage your time and assignments from home, online school could be a good fit. On the other hand, if face time with your professor and classmates is a higher priority and you depend on the routine of traveling to class, you may find an on-campus degree to be a better option.

What Are Some High-Paying Jobs I Can Get With A Computer Science Degree?

With a bachelor’s degree, the average salary for computer network architects is $126,900. For database administrators, it’s $112,120, and for information security analysts, it’s $112,00. You can see more median salaries for this industry by checking the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook .

Franciscan university athletics awards dinner honors community members.

STEUBENVILLE — Honoring community members was the focal point of Franciscan University of Steubenville’s Baron Club Awards Dinner, which featured a former Super Bowl champion as its keynote speaker Thursday.

In its 55th year, the awards dinner is Franciscan University’s primary fundraising effort for its intercollegiate athletics program. Formerly known as the Century Club, the Baron Club is composed of local sponsors that donate annually toward advancing the university’s athletic endeavors.

Joe Wallace, Franciscan’s director of community relations and former head men’s basketball coach, said community recognition is integral to the Baron Club’s yearly dinner.

He added that this year marks the event’s largest sponsorship support, a testament to the university’s relationships with others in the Ohio Valley being “the best they’ve ever been.”

Among those being honored Thursday in the Finnegan Fieldhouse were Joanna Bernabei-McNamee, head women’s basketball coach at Boston College; Tom Timmons, local banker and community benefactor, and the Phillipson family, founders of the Cynthia Rose Phillipson Charitable Foundation.

This year’s keynote speaker was Matt Birk, an All-Pro center with a 15-year career playing for the Minnesota Vikings and Baltimore Ravens, which he helped win Super Bowl XLVII. He is a six-time Pro Bowl selection and the recipient of the 2011 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.

A Catholic, Birk said he was thrilled to be invited to Franciscan, “the best Catholic university in the world.” Birk told the story of his football career, throughout which he had ceased practicing Catholicism until the birth of his daughter inspired him to dive back into his faith.

Football and Catholicism have a lot in common, Birk said, adding that both show how succeeding doesn’t take talent. Rather, he said, it takes commitment and discipline.

“In sports, you find out you can actually push yourself beyond your limits. And probably the biggest thing is you’re part of something bigger than yourself, and it’s not about you. All those things are true in sports, and they’re true in our faith. … At Franciscan, … you’re using (sports) as an extension of your evangelization strategy, and you’re seeing college kids in the faith.”

Bernabei-McNamee received the Father Terence Henry, TOR, Award. She is a graduate of Weirton Madonna High School and West Liberty University, where she was inducted into the Hilltoppers’ Hall of Fame. She was also named the 1997 Player of the Year by the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

In her sixth year as head coach at Boston College, Bernabei-McNamee said she was honored to be recognized and to visit home — a great feeling, she added, particularly during the travel-heavy recruiting season.

“My heart will always belong to Weirton and the Ohio Valley,” she said.

Being back near her hometown of Weirton had caused Bernabei-McNamee to reflect on family, which she called “the cornerstone of everything.” She said family connectivity was central to her upbringing and is something she feels is important for children’s development.

Timmons also received the Henry award. Raised in Barnesville, Timmons moved to Steubenville with his wife, Tyra, a decision that held a lot of uncertainty, though Tom Timmons now believes, “We couldn’t be happier to call Steubenville our home.”

With his professional career in lending, Timmons’ volunteer service a has extended to the Steubenville City Schools Board of Education, Brooke-Hancock-Jefferson Metropolitan Planning Commission, Union Cemetery Association, United Way of Jefferson County, the finance committee at Valley Hospice, the Ohio Valley Health Center board, Kiwanis Club of Steubenville, the Charles M. And Thelma M. Pugliese Foundation and the Albaugh/Wherry Foundation.

Timmons began his speech by reading the poem “Why Be a Volunteer” about selfless giving and ended by reciting maxims about the importance of service. He offered thanks to God for blessings in life, WesBanco, his parents, his sons and their families, his friends and his wife, with whom he will be celebrating 50 years of marriage on June 14.

The Kuzma Family Award went to the Phillipson family and was received by Todd Phillipson, who recalled looking up to the awards’ namesake, the late Henry “Hank” Kuzma, as a mentor.

Todd and Carol Phillipson were married in 1996 and had two daughters, Cynthia and Veronica. On Oct. 30, 2014, 15-year-old Cynthia Phillipson, then a freshman at Steubenville Catholic Central, suffered cardiac arrest while at basketball practice and died three days later.

In her memory, the Phillipsons founded the memorial foundation, which has left a legacy of aid through providing scholarships for local students, hosting memorial lantern-lighting and butterfly release ceremonies to help grieving individuals and supporting Mary’s Meals, an international charity aimed at providing food for children in poor communities. Because of the memorial foundation’s support, a school lunchroom in Africa was named after Cynthia Phillipson.

Todd Phillipson said doing good through the foundation has at times been emotionally difficult, but the surrounding community has consistently rallied to help the family push through and honor Cynthia Pillipson’s legacy.

“We cannot stand up here and take any credit,” Todd Phillipson said. “It is people, it is family, it is friends, it is this community that has permitted us to serve, … (and) it comes together like no other in times of crisis, during those times when things seem the darkest.”

He noted one of Cynthia Phillipson’s last social media posts before her death, which reads, “We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever. The goal is to create something that will.”

Given time to speak was Danny Anderson, Franciscan’s athletic director, who said of the university’s athletics program: “We want to send out young men and women who are mature, integrated, well-formed, who will stand in the cultural breach, who will sanctify every human activity and will do so more effectively … (because of) having been athletes at Franciscan.”

Anderson listed various student athletes’ personal and athletic accomplishments, noting that 39 athletes have received all-conference recognition since the fall semester, including 13 receiving first team recognition, and the average student athlete grade point average exceeds the rest of the student body’s average.

Columbia cancels in-person classes; protesters arrested at Yale and NYU: Updates

Editor's Note: This page is a summary of news on student protests engulfing campuses over the Israel-Hamas war on Monday, April 22. For the latest news, see our live updates file for Tuesday, April 23 .

NEW YORK – As tensions over the Israel-Hamas war continue to boil on campuses across the country, Columbia University on Monday moved classes online while dozens of students were arrested in protests at Yale and New York University, and school officials closed Harvard Yard to the public.

Demonstrations at Yale and Harvard were planned in part out of solidarity with protesters at Columbia who set up an encampment last week that led to the arrest of more than 100 students. The protests have raised concerns for the safety of Jewish students and fueled a national debate over student demonstrations as campuses grapple with growing unrest over the war in Gaza.

At New York University, officers moved on the NYU crowd shortly after nightfall as hundreds of demonstrators for hours had defied university warnings that they faced consequences if they failed to vacate a plaza where they had established a Gaza Solidarity Encampment.

Video on social media showed police taking down tents in the protesters' NYU encampment. Demonstrators tussled with officers and chanted, "We will not stop, we will not rest. Disclose. Divest."

A New York police spokesperson said arrests were made after NYU asked police to enforce trespassing violations but the total number of arrests and citations are still unknown.

Columbia President Minouche Shafik said in a statement Monday that while online classes are being held, a working group of deans, university administrators and faculty members "will try to bring this crisis to a resolution" by, among other actions, speaking with student protesters.

Most classes at Columbia will be hybrid for the rest of the spring semester, the university announced Monday, as students grapple with tensions over the war. All courses on the college’s Morningside main campus will be hybrid, the college said, except for art or practice-based programs. The Medical Center and Manhattanville will also remain in-person.

“Safety is our highest priority as we strive to support our students’ learning and all the required academic operations,” the provost's office said in a statement.

Columbia is the latest U.S. school to be rocked by the Israel-Hamas war, which began with Hamas' brutal border attacks on Israeli communities Oct. 7. Israel's subsequent bombardment of Gaza has led to a dire humanitarian crisis there and fueled protests nationwide demanding a cease-fire.

As demonstrations have proliferated across college campuses, students have also been demanding that universities show more transparency in their investments and divest from enterprises with links to Israel's war effort.

Protests continue on both sides amid police presence

Demonstrators on both sides of the dispute met student protesters outside Columbia's gates Monday morning, banging drums, carrying signs and flags and chanting.

About a dozen pro-Palestinian protesters shouted: “Resistance is justified when people face genocide. Resistance is justified when people are colonized.”

After a few minutes, officers with the New York Police Department told the group not to bang the drum. A USA TODAY reporter saw police handcuff two pro-Palestinian protesters and walk them toward NYPD vehicles.

The NYPD told USA TODAY that as of early afternoon it had no record of arrests or people being taken into custody outside the school. The department said the most recent arrest was Saturday.

How Columbia University became the epicenter of disagreement over the Israel-Hamas war

Patriots owner Robert Kraft says he has 'lost faith' in alma mater Columbia

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, a prominent Columbia alumnus and donor, said Monday he has "lost faith in the institution'' and no longer recognizes it.

In a social media post from his Foundation to Combat Antisemitism , Kraft called for the university to stop the protests that have roiled the campus and led to some tense confrontations between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and Jewish students.

"I am deeply saddened at the virulent hate that continues to grow on campus and throughout our country,'' said Kraft, who is Jewish. "I am no longer confident that Columbia can protect its students and staff and I am not comfortable supporting the university until corrective action is taken.''

The billionaire businessman referred to Columbia, from where he graduated in 1963, as "the school I love so much.'' He has demonstrated that with millions of dollars in donations, some of which helped fund the Kraft Center for Jewish Student Life at the school.

Kraft closed his statement saying he hopes the center "will serve as a source of security and safety for all Jewish students and faculty on campus who want to gather peacefully to practice their religion, to be together, and to be welcomed.''

Jewish Columbia faculty member says he was denied entry

Shai Davidai, an assistant professor of business at Columbia, spoke out against the school from its front gates after he said he was denied entry onto campus Monday morning.

“They have deactivated my card, they are not letting me, a Jewish professor at Columbia, they are not letting me on campus,” he said.

Davidai told a crowd gathered outside that he was not given prior notice his entry card would be deactivated and that later the university told him he would be allowed on the business campus to teach Tuesday.

On the social media platform X, Davidai wrote: “Earlier today, @Columbia University refused to let me onto campus. Why? Because they cannot protect my safety as a Jewish professor. This is 1938.”

At a news conference, Michael Gerber, deputy commissioner of legal matters for the NYPD, said the city had nothing to do with the decision to deny Davidai entry onto campus. “They’re doing their own analysis, making their own decisions, making their own safety determinations,” he said. “That’s not us.”

The university did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Protesters arrested at Yale University

Dozens of students were arrested at Yale University on Monday as police cleared an encampment set up by students in protest of the war in Gaza.

A statement from the university said at least 47 students had been arrested as of 9:50 a.m. ET. The latest police action against students protesting the war came as the Yale encampment, set up last week, grew to include several hundred people calling on the university to drop investments to military weapons manufacturers.

Negotiations between the protesters and university officials ended unsuccessfully late Sunday night, the university said. Early Monday morning, campus police asked the protesters to leave Beinecke Plaza, the university's main lawn, remove their belongings and show their IDs. When some refused, the arrests began.

"The university made the decision to arrest those individuals who would not leave the plaza with the safety and security of the entire Yale community in mind and to allow access to university facilities by all members of our community," the statement said.

After the encampment was cleared, hundreds of protesters blocked nearby streets and were heard chanting, “We will free Palestine within our lifetime,” according to the Yale Daily News .

Harvard University closes part of campus to the public

Harvard has closed its main lawn to the public in anticipation of pro-Palestinian protests following the recent uproar at Columbia.

A written announcement posted on the entrance gates said disciplinary actions would be taken against Harvard students who bring into the area unauthorized structures such as tents or tables, according to the Harvard Crimson . The closure was decided “out of an abundance of caution and with the safety of our community as a priority," according to an email received by students. The student newspaper also reported the school's Palestine Solidarity Committee has been suspended .

On Friday, over 200 students and others took to Harvard Yard in solidarity with the protesters at Columbia and demanded that the Ivy League school also divest from Israel-related investments, the student newspaper reported.

Students at other Boston-area colleges, like MIT, Tufts and Emerson, have begun their own solidarity encampments, and the movement has also expanded to other prominent universities like Cal-Berkeley and Michigan.

Cal-Berkeley students also set up camp, demand school divest holdings

Several hundred students gathered around noon Monday in front of the Sproul Hall administration building on the University of California campus at Berkeley.

They set up about a dozen tents and said they plan to stay on site until the university system divests its financial holdings from corporations that "enable profit from Israeli apartheid, occupation and genocide in accordance with the international boycott, divestment and sanctions movement," said Banan Abdelrahman, a leader with the group UC Berkeley Graduate Students for Justice in Palestine.

She and others called for an immediate end to the violence in Gaza and to permanently sever ties with Israeli universities, including the Berkeley Summer Global Internship Program Israel.

Students want to enact policies to protect the safety and academic freedoms of Palestinian, Arab, Muslim and other students and faculty who have faced blacklisting, harassment, threats and the unwanted publication of private information, Abdelrahman said. "We will be here all day and all night," she said.

UC Berkeley spokesperson Dan Mogulof said there are no plans to change the university's investment policies and practices.

Why are students protesting at Columbia?

Last week, more than 100 student protesters were arrested and suspended after Shafik called in the NYPD to clear an encampment on the campus' South Lawn. The “Gaza Solidarity Encampment" was set up by Columbia University Apartheid Divest,  a coalition of student organizations calling for the school "to divest all economic and academic stakes in Israel," according to its website.

Administrators closed campus to those without campus IDs, though protests continued both on the main lawn and outside the campus gates through the weekend. Several more people were arrested, multiple outlets reported. On Sunday, the school announced new safety measures including doubling the number of security personnel and improved identification checks at campus entry points. But tensions continued to boil.

Rabbi Elie Buechler , director of the Orthodox Union-Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus at Columbia and the all-women’s Barnard, told students to "return home as soon as possible," saying the protests have endangered their safety.

In her decision to order all classes to be moved online, Shafik cited "intimidating and harassing behavior on our campus" and the use of antisemitic language. Videos of the protests have shown tense stand-offs between people holding Israeli flags and the pro-Palestinian protesters.

Students are on 'the right side of history'

Outside of Columbia's gates near 115th street in New York, pro-Palestinian protesters gathered on one side chanting with students inside the campus. Pro-Israeli protesters grouped on the other.

Tahia Islam, an organizer with Shut it Down For Palestine, said the coalition has been working and communicating with students in the encampment, where she said they have created a community of "safety and care."

"They are putting so much of their lives, their careers at risk because they know that the real struggle and the real school is in this moment, right now. It's not in what's getting (taught) in these ivory towers," she said. "They're part of a historical legacy of student movements ... they're absolutely on the right side of history and we'll be with them every step of the way."

Columbia student Hector Lionel took issue with the university's messaging that the students in the encampment were disrupting his studies. The closed gates with ID checkpoints are a bigger hassle than the tents, he said.

"It's just gotten too dystopian," Lionel said. "Now we need to defend the right to protest."

New York governor meets with Columbia University president

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, met with Shafik on Monday morning to discuss the security situation on the school’s Manhattan campus. In a video posted on X , Hochul underscored the need to ensure students and faculty have the right to peacefully protest while also upholding human rights laws.

“The recent harassment and rhetoric is vile and abhorrent,” Hochul wrote in a social media post. “Every student deserves to be safe.”

The meeting came after New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a former police officer, condemned the situation Sunday, and promised that any demonstrators around campus found to be in violation of laws would be arrested.

“We will not be a city of lawlessness, and those professional agitators seeking to seize the ongoing conflict in the Middle East to sow chaos and division will not succeed,” he wrote on X, drawing praise from the Israeli consulate in New York.

President Biden responds to 'alarming surge of antisemitism'

Following days of escalating protests at several major universities across the country, President Joe Biden urged Americans to speak out against an “alarming surge of antisemitism” in the U.S.

"Silence is complicity," Biden said in a written statement Sunday night. "Even in recent days, we’ve seen harassment and calls for violence against Jews. This blatant antisemitism is reprehensible and dangerous – and it has absolutely no place on college campuses, or anywhere in our country.''

Biden also expressed his wishes for a happy Passover, the Jewish holiday that begins Monday evening. "This year, let us remember the central Passover theme that even in the darkest of times, the promise of God’s protection will give us strength to find hope, resilience, and redemption," Biden said.

Biden also said his administration will continue work to implement the National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism it announced last May.

– Rachel Barber and Joey Garrison

Faculty, alumni gather outside Columbia campus

Alumni, faculty and parents gathered outside Columbia on Monday, some out of concern for what they say is rising antisemitism on campus and others in support of the students protesting the war.

Amy Werman, a professor with Columbia’s School of Social Work, told USA TODAY, “We are here to show that we have a place on this campus and we belong here and we're not going to be intimidated."

Harriet Jackson, who works at the Columbia Teacher’s College, said she's worried about Jewish students, faculty and staff feeling protected, adding that she believes in protesting and would describe herself as "pro-Palestinian and against any kind of oppression of any people."

House Republicans call for Columbia president’s resignation

Two conservative New York congresswomen called for Shafik’s resignation over the weekend, even as their colleagues in the House – as well as some  local Republicans  – stopped short of the same demand.

Rep. Elise Stefanik, whose viral questioning of the presidents of Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania ultimately helped spur their exits, said Sunday that Shafik has “clearly lost control,” putting the safety of Jewish students at risk.

“It is crystal clear that Columbia University – previously a beacon of academic excellence founded by Alexander Hamilton – needs new leadership,” she wrote in a  post on X . The school was  actually chartered  by King George II.

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican representing parts of Brooklyn and Staten Island,  said Monday  that the school’s abrupt pivot to virtual learning was proof that Shafik has been “unable to stop the antisemitic activity on her campus.”

Congressional Democrats also condemned reports of antisemitic incidents and the souring campus climate, though many stopped short of calling for Shafik to step down. Several Jewish Democrats  planned to visit  the school Monday to speak with students.

Alumni support protesters with supplies

Among those trying to get inside of Columbia’s gates were alumni supporting the student encampment with supplies.

Olivia Baker, who graduated last year from Columbia, was trying to deliver food and electrolyte drinks to students. Baker, whose grandfather is a Holocaust survivor, was denied entry to campus despite having an ID.

Baker has been in contact with other alums who are supplying food to students as well.   “It’s great to feel connected to this community,” Baker said. “Maybe not to the school and its policies and leadership, but to the alumni community and the kids who are showing out and changing things.”
