Advantages of Village Life: 

There are lots of advantages of village life. The village people are very friendly. It’s easy to make a friend. They will find time for you. They love to chat and hangout. When you greet people in a good way, they will respect you a lot. 

Life is very simple and peaceful there. You can live without any hassle or problems. The food is amazing there. You will find every type of fruit, vegetables, fishes, or meat and they are fresh. I love to eat village vegetables. When I stay there, I go to a different village garden to buy vegetables.

Disadvantages of Village Life:

Along with lots of advantages, there are some disadvantages too. Some villages are very unprivileged. They don’t have electricity, gas, or a proper education system. I can tell you about some neighboring villages. 

They don’t have electricity and that has made their life very hard. It’s a fault of the system and government. We need to make our village able to live for everyone. The migration problem is getting huge in our country for fewer facilities in villages. 

People have a high intention to move to the cities. But we can make our villages amazing. The village has less opportunity for making a job or working space. If you want to get a better job, then you need to go to the city for sure.

My Village Essay

Life in metropolitan cities can be exciting and very happening, but life in villages has an entirely different vibe with its countryside atmosphere. The simplicity, peace and purity of a village is wonderful and unbeatable. I come from a small Himalayan village, Lamahatta, popularly known for its beauty. The name of my village is Lamahatta. It is a small village present in the outskirts of North Bengal. I was born and brought up in Lamahatta. Lamahatta is well known for its lush pine forests, vast stretches of Darjeeling tea garden and the views of the snow-capped mountains. It is also a tourist destination. My village remains cool all through the year. The number of people residing in Lamahatta is not more than 1000. The villagers are very helpful. The majority of the women are tea-plantation workers whereas men work in construction. A pucca road runs through the entire village with small decorated houses on each side of the road. I love my village and its people.

I come from a village named Lamahatta. The village is located at a very high altitude nearly about 5000 feet above sea level. Lamahatta is a very small village of only 1000 residents. My village has become one of the tourist destinations because of its pleasant climate and natural beauty. Lamahatta has vast stretches of tea plantations and beautiful pine forests. These forests smell refreshing and sweet due to the presence of terpenes on them. My father used to take me to the village every year during my school holidays. I used to spend the entire holidays amidst the silence of the pine forests in a little concrete house with my mother, father and my brother.

The chirping of birds all throughout the day, and the light cool breeze used to amaze me and freshen up our minds. Here in my village, the houses are beautifully decorated with orchids and other flowers. Life in a village is very different from that in urban cities. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Lamahatta has always been peaceful. The people of my village are very helpful and lovable. In the evening, after the completion of work, every woman in the village meets in a small community hall where they have a small get-together. We celebrate each and every festival with great enthusiasm.

Everyone loves their native birthplace and so do I. I was born in a village named Lamahatta located at an altitude of 5000 feet near Darjeeling, the Queen of Hills in North Bengal. 'Lama' in Lamahatta stands for a Buddhist monk and 'Hatta’ means a hut. So basically Lamahatta means a monk's hermitage. Lamahatta is an offbeat location known for its lush green pine trees and large stretches of tea gardens with a beautiful view of the mountains. Due to this, my village has become a famous tourist destination mainly during the summers and the springs.

Life In A Village | Life in my village is quite different from that in urban cities. Here, it is slower and more peaceful. People live together and lead very simple lives. We mostly stay away from the continuous hustle and bustle of urban life. My village is greener and one can feel the freshness of the air.

About My Village

The people of my village are generally tribals belonging to the Sherpas, Tamangs, Bhutias and Dukpas . They work hard every day in order to make Lamahatta a clean, simple place and attractive place to live in. I belong to the Bhutia tribe. In my house, I have my parents and my small brother. My mother works as a tea plantation worker whereas my father works at a construction site. The occupations of the people in my village are plantation workers, homestay caretakers, dhaba managers and construction workers.

Places Of Attraction | My village people, along with the support of the government, have made this an eco-tourism place. Lamahatta contributes a good amount to North Bengal tourism. People from other countries often visit my village during the summer. Besides the natural beauty, the pleasant weather makes Lamahatt a dream place and an ideal place to live in. There are many exciting places for sightseeing here. We have the Lamahatta Eco Park , a roadside garden, monasteries among the woods, trekking facilities to Sacred Pond, the Gari Danda Fort and most importantly the huge tea plantations. My village serves as the connecting route between Darjeeling and Kalimpong . We also have ‘machan’, a wooden watchtower from where we can view the entire Lamahatta. The Eco park consists of about hundreds of colorful flags. My father says that the wind blowing through these flags is considered to purify the souls and minds of the people.

Christmas Celebration in Lamahatta

We celebrate all the festivals in my village but Christmas is specially celebrated with huge pomp and gaiety. Each house is decorated with lanterns and lights. All the kids have Christmas tree decoration competitions among themselves where the best tree decorator is awarded fancy gifts by the other villagers. On Christmas eve , all the villagers meet at a common place near Eco Park where we dance and dine together. I love my village because it is peaceful and serene. Lamahatta holds a number of my childhood memories. Living here makes me relive all those magical moments. It feels good to stay here. The natural beauty of my village always amazes me.

In origin, I’m from Bangladesh. But after the partition, my family came and settled in a remote village in Murshidabad. Presently, I stay in Kolkata with my parents, but several times I have heard my father remember his childhood days in the village.

During the vacations, I often visit the village. People are so innocent there and all of them love us so much. They care for their nature and do not harm it like the urban people. Also, they have still kept their tribal festivals intact. I love to enjoy their traditional food and this bonding between my people in the village. Whenever I visit my village, it has always been so ni experience.

Since my childhood days, I used to fantasize about spending my life in our ancestral village. Staying in a village has never been an opportunity for me because I am born and brought up in the city. We hardly get a chance to meet my ancestral people in the village of Murshidabad. The story goes back to the partition of India when my great grandparents migrated from Bangladesh and settled in Murshidabad to protect their families. At that time they were extremely poor and had a humble income to spend their days. They were followed by many others.

The village is now much more developed than it was when first inhabited. When I visit the village with my parents, during the vacation, it gets quite enjoyable to meet them after a long time. The clean air and water are beautiful with pure fruits and vegetables to eat. The reads are of red soil and soft to walk over. The humble neighbour of that village is the main reason I love my village. 

Some of our relatives still live in the village. Their primary profession is agriculture. During my visit, my cousins took me to show the agricultural fields. It was totally a mesmerizing experience. The entire horizon was green and such a peaceful life that I could never experience in the city.

Life in a village is much different from what we experience in the city. The urban lifestyle does not provide us with all views of the Earth. The world has much more greenery and beauty than it seems to us. The city definitely gives a modern life, better infrastructure, more communication, and quick connections. But it also takes away the natural goodness from us.

I find myself extremely lucky to think that I am from a village. I stay in a distant village in the suburbs of Darjeeling. The best part of living in a village is that I can stay far away from the daily crowd of the city. The city is too confusing and suffocating for me. I cannot bear staying there even for a week. I always crave the peace I get in my own village. The village called Kasaimara is extremely beautiful in its flora and fauna. The air is clean and pure like the innocent people of my village.

We do not have many modern amenities like the city. We often face problems with network and communication, we do not have good schools or hospitals. But still, the peace of nature allows us to live a long and healthy life. I love to take long walks up the hill slopes in the morning or often cycle all the way. It saves the cost of taking any gym practice and is also helpful in maintaining a healthy body and peaceful mind. 

Due to no pollution, we always have a majestic view of the mountains from our village. Around 50-50 families live in our village. For weekend and holiday picnics, all our villagers come together and celebrate with our ethnic music and dance. It is not like the mechanical life of the city. Everything we do here has a spontaneous charm and is full of life.

The environment of my village is so beautiful. The people work hard to preserve ethnic integrity. We have a rich history o folktales and myths. As a child, I often heard my grandparents tell me stories about them. They are precious and innocent like the people. They easily befriend other members, even from a different community. My village celebrates our own tribal festivals with great enjoyment and pomp. I am extremely lucky that I am a proud villager of India. We do not have many facilities, but at the end of the day, we are at peace with ourselves and others.

The villages preserve our national customs and traditions. Village residents usually organize various festivals and fairs at which they represent the richness of our culture. The villagers think in terms of religion and God.

A village temple is a divine place where people draw inspiration for further work and pray for their families and themselves. Village life is a unique closeness between the older and younger generations. Young people treat their parents and grandparents with great respect and follow their valuable advice.

In cities such as Mumbai, there is a lot of factories that create waste and pollutions. The village does not have too many factories and create pollution.

There are people whose personality is not very stylish and attractive in the village, but being in the village makes them attractive. The inhabitants of the village do not lead to a luxurious life like inhabitants of the city, but they are pleased with it. They can handle them in a small variety of food, clothes, and facilities.

Residents of the village take ordinary food, so they do not eat junk food like the inhabitants of the town. Living in the village is a life of small groups of communities who live in silence. The experience of villagers is entirely different from living in the city.

Advantages of Village life

 Village life mostly becomes tedious and causes a lack of clarity and gloss, which puts them in an unfavorable situation next to the residents of the city.

Ignorance, prejudices, and narrow are more characteristic for rural areas than for life in the city. The villagers are poor and superstitious.

Many villages do not have the necessary facilities, such as good roads, schools, and hospitals.

Equipment and teaching schools in rural areas are not satisfactory, so you cannot get a comprehensive education . Also, the villagers do not understand the importance of education.

 Many children do not understand the importance of education and commitment to agriculture.

Residents of the village do not know how important the preservation of good health.

The famous proverb Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi says:

“Information, education, skills, health care, measures to maintain, including financial, small and rural businesses, opportunities for women, protection of resources, natural, distribution of clean energy. New possibilities came up to change model development.”

People living in the village are healthier, more active, and have more straightforward habits than people living in cities.

Village life is the most natural life of the human beings. The village is a panorama of the charming scenes of nature. The scenery of the changing seasons has a profound effect on the village life. It brings a divine touch into the human mind. Hence, the village life is full of divine beauty.

Village life is plain and simple. Villagers are content with the necessities of life. They have no liking for luxury. They manage with a few pieces of clothes. They prefer the plain food. They discharge their social duties in the simplest manner possible.

Villagers are mostly fieldworkers. Some of them are artisans. All of them follow the trade of their respective castes. Nowadays due to urbanization and globalization the site of a lush green village is becoming extinct. Villages are an ode to the simple ways of living. Sometimes we fall into the hoax of thinking that villages aren’t important in a country, rather modern cities and modern development is what is needed to sustain ourselves.

But if we look closely we will find that villages supply us the basic needs of our life like, food, clothing from textiles, different items of daily use from different cottage industries, cattle and manual labour. Hence village form an important sector of a country’s development sphere.  

My village is the village of Dumka located in Jharkhand. Although in recent times it is rapidly developing into a modern city. But from my very childhood I grew up in this village. My heart and all my memories are tightly woven all around this village.    We can reach it through bus or train or car in just one day.  

The people over there have very simple ways of living. Maximum people have their individual lands where they cultivate themselves some crops of daily need like potatoes and papayas.  My grandparents lived there, even they earned a small bungalow with a small garden in which they had a collection of fruit trees like mango, guava and lichi and some crops and a lawn for sitting and having morning tea.  

The environment of the area is quite serene, no loud horns, no mic blarings, and no people talking. The only sounds that come to the ears are the sound of bird chirping, woodpeckers pecking and the sound of some cattle grazing in a distant field.

You don’t need a television or a  smart phone  if you find yourself in such an atmosphere. The place is also sparsely populated. The nearest house from my grandfather’s house was the house of an army colonel some 0.5 kilometers away.  

The night time atmosphere in the village was more blissful than in the day. Night falls quiet early in villages than in the cities. In the cities the people go to bed usually at midnight that is at 12 A.M but in villages the people go to bed quiet early almost at 8 or 9 pm, but on the other side, they get up quiet early and set to work.

Once you lie down quietly in bed you can hear the murmur of wind past your ears, the sound of grass blades brushing against each other, the sweet song of cricket going on uninterruptedly, a distant sound of a dog howling and suddenly a sweet and deep drowsiness will overcome you and eventually to fall to sleep listening to the sounds of nature.  

Such is the connection of the place with the natural environment. It is right in the lap of nature. There is nothing much to do in that village. Mobile signal accessibility is a matter of luck, electricity availability is quite disrupted, and hence there is no way of watching television. Well to do families only could afford themselves an inverter and a television set.  

Coming to the celebration of festivals, festivals in villages are quite different. It is not filled with loudspeakers and aren’t as crowded as the pujas and festivals in cities. Instead the people celebrate it quite peacefully and while seeking the blessings of god.  

Some festivals bring in the country fair with them. Country fairs are extraordinary things to watch. Country fair is filled with people of all categories trying to sell knick-knacks, toys, food, most of them are made by they themselves. Cottage industries contributing to the same.

In the toy store you won’t get a recent edition of Barbie or any action figure, rather you’ll get earthen toys painted bright in traditional colours. Who’s the maker? The seller himself! He might be the potter who has come to the fair to sell off his works of art. In some fairs also called ‘melas’ you can also shoe puppet shows with puppets looking very traditional, all decked up in bright Indian clothes and colours.  

In this village there is the postman called ‘Ramubabu’. He is your delivery guy, your speed post guy, your parcel guy etc. this means that there is no formal delivery services available in this village. People use only to post offices to receive items as well as deliver them.  

Not feeling like to cook? Want to order pizza? Want it to be delivered right at your doorstep within 30 minutes? Well, all this are dreams in this village. First of all there is no pizza shops located here and there. The only pizza shop present is there near the main bazaar (a comparatively developed place with a few departmental stores, garment shops and other permanent shops) some 2 kilometers away.

If you want to eat pizza you probably have to go there and eat. Means of transport ? A hand pulled rickshaw or an auto. There is no question of delivery guys, since not much people know about pizza there.  

The main commodities of travel are rickshaws, vans, autos and buses. Another drawback of this village is that they lack public toilets. Some individual pucca and kaccha homes also lack in adequate sanitary facilities. Hence people goes to open fields early in the morning with buckets and jars to get their daily needs done is a common sight.  

The people of these villages deserve a better life. They have right to adequate civic amenities like the municipal water, electricity and better transportation and connectivity. The condition of farmers in today’s world is pitiable. They should be uplifted from their social status since they are the pillars on which our economy stands.

What Can Sankofa Teach Us?

The popular african symbol—which means ‘return to your past’—continues to guide and inspire the black diaspora.

Affixed on jewelry, tattoos, fabric, and home decor, and even in the pattern of wrought-iron fences in places like Washington, D.C., and Savannah, Georgia, is a heart-shaped symbol with curly circles at the top and bottom, almost like the mirroring of two S’s to make a heart.

It is one version of the popular Adinkra symbol Sankofa .

Sankofa literally means “return to your past” or “go back and fetch it.” It can also mean “it is not taboo to go back and fetch it,” which is useful as an apology (e.g., “I invoke Sankofa and wish to go back and correct what I did at yesterday’s meeting when I incorrectly accused you of wrongdoing”).

Also commonly symbolized by the outline of a bird whose head and beak are pointed backward, toward its tail, often with an egg either in the beak or nestled in the tail, Sankofa has become a cultural phenomenon. It gives a name to the African diaspora’s concerns for heritage, legacy, authenticity, and dignity—in the U.S. and beyond.

Sankofa belongs to a communication system called the Adinkera, or Adinkra, which comes from present-day Ghana and Ivory Coast—key West African regions from which African Americans’ ancestors came.

After Ghana’s independence from Britain in 1957, the country’s first prime minister, Kwame Nkrumah, instituted a national policy to revive and celebrate the Adinkra system, particularly the concept of Sankofa. Nkrumah also welcomed the descendants of enslaved Africans to repatriate, or at least visit, the nation. Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, Malcolm X, and many other artists, activists, and culturally curious African Americans began making trips to Ghana in the late 1950s, where they would have likely encountered Adinkra symbols and philosophies. Scholarship around the Adinkra started to become more visible stateside, too, beginning in 1983 with the publication of Ivory Coast anthropologist Georges Niangoran-Bouah’s The Akan World of Gold Weights .

The concept of Sankofa resonates with core aspects of African American culture and life. The ideas of “return” and “back-to-Africa” anchor African American nationalist thought. Even more pervasive in Black people’s consciousness is the endearment of Africa as a homeland. By reflecting folk narratives presenting flight as self-emancipation and escape from enslavement and oppression, Sankofa embodies a sense of love, affection, respect, and sacred remembrance that affirms African American cultural uniqueness and celebrated difference. The principle of Sankofa is a reminder that “flight” and “return” go hand in hand. Just as peace can only come from knowing one’s legacy as well as the healing power of cultural memory.

Ethiopian filmmaker Haile Gerima’s 1993 resistance-themed feature film Sankofa helped introduce the proverb to a wider audience. The multi-award-winning independent film begins in contemporary times, with a culturally unaware African American model doing a photoshoot on the same Ghana beach where the historic Elmina enslavement fort still stands. The model then travels through time to the enslavement past and discovers the sacredness of how her ancestors survived through revolts and sacrifice. Rich in themes of communalism, revolt, Pan-Africanism, and intellectual agency, Sankofa is a revolutionary vision of enslavement courage. In the years since its release, it has attracted a cult and cultural following.

The Sankofa cultural explosion continues in high schools and colleges today. In Black Studies classes, teachers introduce Sankofa to newer generations through the film and as an example of African philosophy. For many, it is a new and inspirational experience that reinforces the educational goals of historical recovery and presents the rich intellectual tradition of the African world. In practices of Black psychology, Sankofa grounds wellness and renewal in ancient wisdom. And in literary analysis, Sankofa is a paradigm that asks readers to map the ways characters of African descent travel and explore heritage homelands. This travel is often multidirectional and involves not just Africa, but also the Americas, the Caribbean, and even Europe.

But Sankofa is most visible outside of academia, in the explosion of businesses, schools, and community engagement projects that have embraced the name “Sankofa.” Represented by familiar icons (a heart, a bird) rather than some of the less familiar geometric shapes in the Adinkra, Sankofa holds immediate, recognizable visual appeal. While community institutions may not necessarily have a deep understanding of Sankofa’s precise Adinkra meaning, Sankofa has also been embraced by some as a general African/Black legacy concept that communicates that they are proud agents of a global heritage.

Consider just a sampling: Sankofa Kitchen (Dallas); Sankofa Arts Lounge (Dallas); Sankofa Research Institute (Houston); Sankofa Village for the Arts (Pittsburgh); Sankofa African and World Bazaar (Baltimore); Sankofa Church (Atlanta); Sankofa Community Discount Card (Atlanta); Sankofa Initiative (Jacksonville); Sankofa Creations Spalon (Jacksonville); Sankofa Jazz Festival (Miami); and Sankofa Soul, the sponsor of music festivals in St. Lucia, Curacao, Brooklyn, and Coney Island.

For hundreds of years, African Americans have used everything from storytelling to art to religion to keep their heritage alive in a hostile U.S. In 1991, African American archaeologists even discovered Sankofa symbols in a colonial-era African burial ground during a high-rise construction project in lower Manhattan; that site is now a national monument . Such relics from the past, like the Akan gold weights that fueled commerce for 500 years, show the depth and longevity of the ancient traditional West African roots of African Americans.

The knowledge imparted by African ancestors—an inheritance forcibly taken away, though never completely lost—has endured, yet African Americans revel in the more recent awareness of the vast Adinkra system because it is specific amidst a cultural history that largely has been a generic remembrance.

Imagine the possibilities for cultural reclamation and enrichment if the African American and diasporic communities continue to utilize not just Sankofa but the wealth of philosophies shared within the entire Adinkra system. Because among its symbols lie universal wisdom around the human capacity to heal, to repair, to renew, and to return.
