Describe Your Favourite Weather: A Guide to Answer Cue Card Topics for the IELTS Speaking Exam

The speaking examination is the second component of the IELTS exams that will test you for your linguistic abilities and capacity to articulate yourself. It’s a speaking test for IELTS. These are conducted face-to-face to assess you by video conference agreements with a specially trained expert in speech and linguistics. Well, the weather is an important aspect of nature as well as, according to their preference and desires, everybody likes and dislikes the weather, however, I always prefer hot weather because I like it a lot that time, I go out with friends and family as well. It usually happens from June to September, but it can occur differently in various types of areas of the nation now due to emissions.

Interestingly, I enjoy hot summer days all the time, and I also like green grass, hot air, and more. I typically do a different style of things in summer, such as hanging out with friends and eating ice cream, as well as consuming cold coffee, soft drinks, and shakes with it. I spend a lot of time with relatives.

In addition, I keep visiting the poolside and waterpark with my dad. The pleasant island is a water park next to my home, where there are a lot of water sports. I typically love water slides, rain dancing, diving, and delicious Chinese food when I go there as well.

India is a nation that is complex. Whether there is no summer, freezing in winter, rainy and dry conditions, we experience so many things.

I’d like to speak about the “rainy weather” that I like best, rather than other weather. It normally happens from July to September, but it can now occur differently in various areas of the world due to emissions. The rainy season, also known as the “Monsoon.”

Ans: I sense a major revolution, like the global alert that changed the region’s atmosphere.

Introduction: The sun is delicious, while the rain is refreshing, the wind keeps us warm, and the snow is invigorating; there is so much to weather. The Asian weather is divided into four seasons: Summer, Monsoon, Autumn, and Winter.

What kind of weather do you have: But today, I'd like to talk about the Winter, my favourite season. Though the entire year provides us with many fun opportunities, Winter has something special, something whimsical that places it on my list of favorites.

What do you normally do in this weather: The winter season is jam-packed with events. I usually spend the wonderful evenings of this season with my family. Every weekend, while my mother bakes delicious cakes for us, I light a bonfire in my backyard. On Christmas and New Year's Eve, I distribute sweets to the public and donate warm clothing to those in need.

How does the weather affect you: You can feel the magic in the air when the first winter breeze blows through the trees. In my country, the season begins in early November and lasts until late February. The coldest yet most active season occurs in December and early January.

Why do you enjoy this type of weather: I adore cold weather because it brings people together; we all long for warmth, love, and connection. The holidays bring big family meals and never-ending gratitude, and the wheel of time seems to turn a little slower than usual. Also, I adore hot cocoa, hot cider, and peppermint-spiced lattes, and there is no better time to enjoy all of these than during the Winter.

How does the weather affect you: On rainy days, I usually go for a long drive. As a foodie, I enjoy eating my favorite snacks like cutlets and spring rolls with espresso coffee to make the most of the weather. Aside from that, I attend rain dance parties.

Why do you enjoy this type of weather: Because I dislike the hot and humid climate, it serves as a stress reliever for me. This weather brings me closer to my mother nature. Furthermore, I have a great deal of respect for farmers because they satisfy our hunger by producing food. I'm happy because farmers are revitalized by rain. Aside from that, my city streets are spotless after the rain, and the air we breathe is pure. I can enjoy my walk more now.

Writing Task 2 is the second part of the writing section of IELTS, where aspirants are presented with a point of view, argument, or problem and asked to write an essay in response to the question.

Writing Task 1 IELTS

In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 starts with a diagram, a visual representation of information. It can be a table, map, graph, process, diagram, or picture.

A1. I believe this is because the weather can limit people's activities. People may dislike the weather if it prevents them from participating in their favourite activity. For example, my friend despises rainy days because he enjoys playing cricket and is unable to do so due to the rain.

A2. Yes, the weather has an impact on our economy. For example, because our winters are milder, many people from cold northern countries visit us during that time. As a result, it promotes tourism. Furthermore, certain weather conditions, such as hot, sunny days, increase the earnings of local ice cream vendors. Similarly, colder weather boosts the jacket and jumper industry.

Q3. Do you frequently check the weather forecast? 

A3. Yes, I monitor the weather forecast regularly. This is because I travel frequently, and knowing the weather allows me to plan ahead of time. Furthermore, climate change has made weather unpredictable. For example, it can rain even during the dry season, so knowing the weather daily has become essential.

IELTS TOPIC: A Weather You Like

Things to consider:

• You can mention a few different weather types at the beginning and then discuss one.
• Most people would talk about sunny, warm weather , but there are other options that we like depending on what we do. A lot of people love snowy weather, but not a snow storm . Many like windy weather but not a hurricane .
• Try to think about many activities you and other people could do in that weather. The topic asks for activities (What you do...?).

Part 2: Sample Answer

Right, so I kind of like all the weather, depending on the situation. For instance, I enjoy mild sunny weather for traveling, having a walk, spending time in a park and so on. I feel quite relaxed and peaceful when it rains , but only if it’s my day off. If I have to go out, I’d hate it for sure. So as you can see , my feelings about the weather are all about the situations I’m in. I will tell you about one type of weather that I enjoy and actually really miss at the moment – snowy winter weather .

A short introduction about my favorite types of weather.

When I talk about snowy weather, of course , I don’t mean a snowstorm or a blizzard . What I mean is a temperature below zero , but not lower than minus five , and everything already covered in a beautiful white blanket of snow . The temperature is important because I really hate it when the snow melts in your feet and everything leaks . Below zero keeps the snow soft and intact .

Explaining exactly the type of weather I will talk about.

I usually see this kind of weather back in my hometown or up in the mountains at some winter ski resort . I’ve been to those ski resorts many times, and although I don’t particularly enjoy skiing , I still do it every time I have the chance. What I love the most is to dress up in my winter suit and explore nature . In the city I’d usually go to the park at night. As everything is white, the park is lighted up and you can’t recognize that it’s night. Up in the mountains, I’d hike in the forest or even try to climb up a hill or a mountain peak . It’s really exciting to do that, although if there is a lot of snow, it’s quite difficult to walk up or down as you might slip a lot. Other than that, I build a snowman (yes I’m grown up, I know), or even just jump in the snow. That’s how much I enjoy it.

Answering where can I see it? What activities I like and dislike to do in it?

The reason I like it is simple – the snow changes the whole outlook of a city or a mountain. It’s like seeing your surroundings in a completely new way. A person can take many funny photos, enjoy many different winter activities and there is simply no way to hate this kind of weather. I really miss it to be honest.

Consider seasons.

• We wear different clothes in different seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.
• Clothes' types and style are almost the same all around the world for the different seasons. Just name 10 different ones in different time.

Consider weather

• You can mention a few different weather types - sunny, windy, snowy, rainy, and maybe an extreme weather like a snow storm or a pouring rain .
• Again you can mention just a few types of clothing we wear in those times.

Examiner: What are people’s opinions on the weather forecast?

Consider do people believe the forecast.

• You can compare with the past. In the past the weather forecast used to be unreliable. However today its quite accurate.

Consider in your family

• Are there people from your family (parents or grandparents) who do not believe the forecast on the internet or on TV? You can say something about that.

Examiner: How does weather influence people’s life?

Consider different jobs.

• There are many jobs that get impacted from the weather. These are for example farmers , construction workers , drivers , delivery workers , and so on.

Think about personal plans

• We arrange personal plans depending on the weather.
• If we have a beautiful sunny day we might do outdoor sports , hiking, walks along the beach and so on. If not then we usually cancel all plans and stay at home.

Examiner: Are there any festivals about seasons?

Think about local festivals.

• Many countries have small, local festivals related to spring, flowers and nature returning back to normal after winter.

Any international festivals?

• The most common ones to think about would be Thanksgiving which celebrates the harvest , or the Winter and Summer Solstice (longest and shortest day in the year).

Part of the answer is for China as I live here at the moment:

Well, yes of course . Here in China, we have Spring festival and Mid-Autumn festival . These two are sort of at the beginning of those seasons. Of course, sometimes they don’t match exactly , but we know that spring brings a new beginning , same as Spring festival brings the Chinese New Year. If we look abroad , in America they have Thanksgiving which is related to the harvest and collecting the yield from the harvest. At least that’s how it began and now it changed and turned to be a family gathering festival . And then there are the Winter and Summer Solstice festivals , which are a bit forgotten these days , but they represent a celebration of the longest and shortest day in a year.

Sample Answer

I am an absolute nature lover and am always awestruck by the natural phenomena that change every now and then. It has always been a matter of intrigue for me. However, besides being beguiled by the complexity of these phenomena, something that I am even more interested in is the variety in seasons and weather and especially the weather that we have in the spring season. I am quite a balanced personality myself and in that case, I love everything which is just balanced well and is not extreme at any end. Therefore, the weather where there is not too much scorching heat and not too much blood-chilling cold is what I love the most.

This kind of weather only actuates in the spring season around Feb-March, and honestly, that is the reason why these months are one of my favourite as I do not have to be fidgeted about wearing too many clothes or worrying about the heat rash that I generally get given the fact that I am sensitive to heat.

Usually, there is nothing peculiar or eccentric that I do or, for that matter, I don’t have any planned endeavours to do in this particular weather. However, it has got more to do with my comfort and composure that I could live my life smoothly in this particular weather.

Meaning: process Eg.: These phenomena are really interesting and beautiful.

Meaning: to be surprised by something you find interesting. Eg.: I was awestruck at the beauty of that bird.

Meaning: interest g.: Nature can often intrigue you by any of its aspects.

Meaning: worried about something Eg.: I fidgeted about the result as I didn’t perform well in the exams.

Meaning: special/unique Eg.: I don’t think there are any peculiar features of this building.

Part 3 Questions

How does the weather (or the weather forecast) affect the activities people do.

The weather decides the fate of a lot of activities. For instance, if we plan to go for an excursion, rain could ruin the plans. Also, weather forecasts can prognosticate the weather of a particular day well in advance and in that way, it becomes a lot easier for us to determine our plans for the day and whether to execute our plans or not.

Why do some people dislike some kind of weather?

It highly depends upon the persona of a person. For example, some might love when it drizzles, while some might completely despise rain. Similarly, some might like basking in the sun, while some might not like to tan. Hence, it has more to do with personal preferences.

Do you think the weather has an influence on people’s moods?

I guess yes, it does. To illustrate, people might not want to step out of their homes when it is too sunny to handle and this way, some might get irksome and tetchy as they could not execute some crucial action. Also, pleasant weather generally casts a soothing effect on the minds of people.

How do you feel about the climate in recent years?

Well, the climate has been going haywire in recent years. It seems as though the word ‘balance’ has lost its true meaning. The most unexpected weather comes to the fore when it is highly unlikely to come. I believe humans are culpable in this regard.

Meaning: trip Eg.: I am interested in going on the excursion you all are planning to go on.

• Prognosticate

Meaning: to predict Eg.: The sage prognosticated the fate of that man years ago.

Meaning: sprinkles of drops Eg.: I love the drizzle, though I don’t like when it heavily rains.

Meaning: explain Eg.: They illustrated the lectures well.

Meaning: disorganised Eg.: I was going haywire with my schedule.

• So spring is my favorite season, and its weather is my favourite weather.

Favourite Season

• India is a diverse country. We namely enjoy four seasons i.e. summer, winter, autumn, and spring.

• Because of global warming summer season is extended and we have summer for almost six months a year.

• My favourite season is however winter.

• Winter lasts from December to February.

• The climate is pleasant, energetic, soothing, and dry.

Another reason to like the winter season is that there are a lot of seasonal fruits and vegetables which can be healthy and tasty.

• I also like to wear woolen clothes, which I can wear during this season only.

• I generally go to visit different places during winter vacation.

• I also look forward to the New year celebrations with my friends.

• Nights are very long in the winters and I love to sleep till late in the morning especially at weekends.

• In summers we sweat a lot and there are so many power cuts, so I don’t like summers.

• Trees shed of their leaves in autumn,

• So, autumn is a very gloomy season.

• Spring is also a wonderful season.

• Everywhere there are blooming flowers and the weather is also generally very pleasant.

• But, spring is very short-lived.

• It only lasts a month and a half.

• In spring generally, my exams are near and so my favourite season remains winter.

Yes, I pay attention to the weather forecast on a regular basis. The reason is I travel a lot and it becomes necessary to know about the weather to be prepared in advance.

Also, climate change has made the weather unpredictable. It sometimes rains even in the dry season as such knowing the weather on a day-to-day basis has become a necessity.

2. How does the weather (or, the weather forecast) affect what activities people do?

People prefer to stay indoors on hot sunny days or rainy days and go out for picnics on pleasant days.

Also, there are things we like to eat in certain weather – for example, fritters on rainy days, ice creams on warm days, etc. It also affects the clothing patterns. People wear light-colored loose cotton dresses in summers and dark warm clothes in cold weather.

I think it’s because the weather can limit people’s activities. If the weather restricts people from enjoying their favorite activity, it can make them dislike that weather.

I enjoy all kinds of weathers for copious reasons, however, my favourite one is snowy weather during winters. Winter breezes feel magical and experiencing them with family create memorable events. I wait for this time of the season to have delightful time with new additions to my wardrobe and mini library.

It occurs in winter season which lasts for about two or three months beginning in November and lasting until January. Sometimes, it lasts longer depending on the region where it continues to snow or have cold winds until February. Snow creates bewitching landscapes and hotels offer cozy  stay that include serving of warm food and beverages to enjoy the weather. 

I like sitting by the window reading a book with a cup of hot chocolate while watching the snowfall. At times when I am not doing this, I have colossal  amount of fun with family and friends who often come over for a game nights and dinners. I love organising such social gatherings to keep in touch with my friends. Sometimes, I travel to an adventurous location to admire the scenic beauty that snow creates and often go skiing whenever I find time.

Snowy weather brings contentment to me. I like playing in snow with my nephew who is a little bundle of joy. However, it does sometimes give me a headache, but it is usually manageable. There are also some sporting events conducted that include a competition of making sculptures using snow and being an art lover, I make sure to participate in them.

1. do you often pay attention to the weather forecast.

I check the weather forecast only when I have plans to travel somewhere or just go out. It helps to decide the kind of clothes I need to wear and equipment like an umbrella to take with me while I am out. A clear sky can quickly turn dark with rainy clouds, so weather forecast is reliable to make necessary preparations in case of an emergency.

2. How does the weather (or, the weather forecast) affect what activities people do?

Weather influences us in multiple ways. For instance, when a picnic is planned and it suddenly starts to rain, it ruins the plans of that outing. Likewise, rainy weather effects sporting events where play must stop due to bad weather conditions. In addition, severe snowfall obstructs transportation and high temperature poses as a threat to people going out who might get dehydrated.

3. Why do some people dislike some kinds of weather?

I believe it is because of the effects that weather has on people and their daily routine. If weather conditions restrict people from going about their day or induce some kind of health implications, they may dislike that kind of weather. I do not like hot weather as it makes me feel irritated and thirsty all the time.

4. Does the weather have an effect on the economy?

Yes, weather influences the economy of a region. For example, summertime crop yield, especially that of fruits like mangoes generates revenue increasing the economic conditions of a region based on their export business. On the other hand, countries that have extreme snowfall during winter see a decline in their economy as it makes regular movement difficult.

Do you prefer cold or hot weather?  

(Answer 1)  

I absolutely prefer cold weather to hot weather because it’s more comfortable. I hate hot weather because I sweat a lot and I feel discomfort that I can’t work well. Besides, I easily get irritated and get headaches due to heat intensity. And because of that, I don’t like summer days, at all.   

(Answer 2)  

That’s a very easy question – I prefer hot weather to cold weather. I love hot weather because I enjoy sunny days. It actually brightens my day and it makes me so inspired to do some water activities such as swimming or snorkeling. Well, I tried living in a country where cold weather is extreme and I just loathed it because I felt depressed.     

What’s the weather like in the place where you live?  

Well, I’m lucky that our state doesn’t have extreme weather conditions compared to other states where people can experience extreme cold and hot weather. The weather condition in our place is just mild. We have bearable (tolerable) cold and hot days and because of that, a lot of local tourists visit our place when they feel the discomfort of the weather that they have in their own states.   

Since I’m living in a  tropical country, most of the time our weather is hot but it’s actually hotter during summertime. We sometimes reach 41-42 degrees Celsius and honestly, that is extremely hot in my opinion. Well, I love summertime but I’m not a fan of (not liking something much) 42 degrees Celsius. That for me is unbearable and I normally just stay at home when the weather is that hot.   

Do you check the weather forecast before going out?/Are you in the habit of checking the weather forecast?

Yes, always! That’s simply because I want to wear something that suits best the weather condition of the day and I need to be aware if there’s a storm coming so I can be prepared. You know, it’s better to prepare than to feel sorry and it doesn’t cost anything to check the weather before leaving the house, anyway.   

Yes, I do but not regularly since I’m living in a tropical country. Well, most of the time, the weather condition here doesn’t change a lot. We have dry and rainy seasons so we can expect what the weather is like almost every single day. It doesn’t change that much.   

Would you like to visit other cities that have different climates from where you live?

Of course! Who wouldn’t want to? (rhetorical question – to add dramatic effect) It’s exciting to experience freezing temperatures in winter and play in the snow in a different city. Also, enjoying the cool breeze that autumn brings while being surrounded (be all around) by the beauty of maple trees with red, yellow, or orange leaves is a great experience. So, who wouldn’t want to experience any of these?

Well, this country is tropical (hot and humid) so the temperature of almost all cities is just the same. But if we talk about visiting another country to experience the four seasons, yes, I would love to. In fact, I make sure to visit another country every year to experience either winter or autumn. Doing so helps me forget about my work as I get to relax. 

What do you think are the effects of climate change in recent years?  

I believe extreme weather conditions are the effects of climate change. I notice that during winter time, the weather is extremely cold that some countries experience a negative 20 degrees Celsius or even more than that, and when it’s summertime, a heat wave is inevitable in some parts of the world. Well, this is the price that we have to pay (the unpleasant or difficult aspect that one must face) for not taking care of our planet.   

I really think the natural disasters that happen from time to time in different parts of the world are the common effects of climate change in recent years. Different countries experience different calamities such as hurricanes, typhoons, forest fires, drought, floods, and the like (and similar things) . Although the world experiences any of these, world leaders don’t make any serious effort to address the issue of climate change. All of them are just paying lip service (to express support for something without taking any significant action) to the world.    

Which do you like better, dry or wet weather?  

I prefer the former ( refers to the first mentioned) since I can be very productive ( fruitful) . When the sun’s up, I’m usually loaded ( filled) with so much energy. Also, I’m a person whose mood is greatly influenced by the weather, so if it’s dry and sunny I can work more efficiently and happily, however, if it’s rainy I can be as lazy as a sloth ( a sloth refers to a mammal that moves very slowly) .    

What kind of weather do you like the most?    

Well as I’ve just said, I like dry or sunny weather. There are no other types of weather that can suffice ( be sufficient; be enough; do; serve) the happiness that I feel on sunny days, as I can do various things such as running errands ( doing a lot of things at a time: going out to buy something, going to the bank, etc.) , doing the laundry, taking a walk in the park, and swimming.    

Without a doubt ( indisputably) , it’s summer! The ambiance ( atmosphere) of summertime is just so different – people’s faces are painted with happiness. That’s because they can enjoy staying outside and doing some outdoor activities with family and friends. Actually, I dream of living in tropical ( having warm or humid weather) countries since those types of countries have the happiest people. I imagine how beautiful their life is.    

Can you tell me the typical weather in your hometown?  

Well, my hometown is no different from any other place in my country. We do have four seasons. When it’s winter, we experience below-zero degrees ( a temperature that is negative) . When it’s autumn or spring, we have chilly and rainy days, and when it’s summer, our temperature reaches 38 degrees Celsius. The temperature in summer is just manageable ( doable) but not in winter.

IELTS Topics: Weather

There are certain topics in the IELTS exam which can be considered quite common. They are not guaranteed to appear in your next exam, but they are common enough that you really should spend some time studying them. One of these super common IELTS topics is weather .

I’m sure that when you first began learning English, you learned to talk about the weather. In my first teaching job, I taught this topic to kindergarten students. Even those cute little 3-year-olds could say, “It’s a sunny day!” or “It is raining.” Of course, for IELTS you need to be able to produce more advanced language than that!

Today, I want to tell you all about weather as a topic for your IELTS test. I’ll explain a little about how it might appear in the exam, and also give you some useful language for describing it.

IELTS Speaking Questions about Weather

The IELTS speaking test is by far the most likely part of the exam to contain questions about weather. This topic could appear in any of the three parts of the speaking test, but it is most likely to occur in part one as the topic is rather shallow. In part one, you aren’t expected to say very much, and so this is the best place for simple questions about things like weather. Here are ten example questions about weather from IELTS speaking part 1:

• What’s the weather like where you live?
• Does the weather affect your mood?
• Do you like sunny days?
• What type of weather do you like best?
• Does the weather ever affect what you do?
• Does it bother you much when it rains?
• What do you like to do on sunny days?
• Does it rain a lot in your hometown?
• Which months have the best weather in your country?
• Does rain ever affect transportation in your hometown?

All of those questions are quite simple, factual matters. There is no real complexity to them because they would be asked in part one and you will only be expected to give a basic answer. For example, let’s look at two of the questions from above:

• It rains a lot in my hometown, even in the summer. Sometimes it’s sunny but it’s never really very warm.
• I really like warm, sunny days the best. When the weather is like that, you can go out and do interesting things rather than being stuck indoors.

You can see that in those answers, I have given only two sentences as a reply. You might think that this is not enough, but actually it is perfectly fine. Notice that I also didn’t use any complex vocabulary. This is also acceptable because for part one the questions really will be simple. You might have a chance to show off more in part three, but don’t worry about it. Sometimes it’s best to use simple language with a high degree of accuracy.

Part two is a little harder to predict, and it’s less likely that you will get a weather question here, but it could still happen. Two cue cards that you might possibly encounter will ask you to do the following:

• Describe your favourite kind of weather. 
• Describe a time when you experienced extreme weather conditions. 

In each case, you would need to follow the cue card and give an appropriate response. Here is a video about describing a season, which has some overlap with the topic of weather.

Part three might have questions about weather as well, but remember that here they will be more complex and abstract. In this section, questions often get into morality, gender, age, and other difficult issues. There isn’t really too much that could be said about weather here, but you might find something like the following:

• Do you think that weather affects people’s behaviour?

Notice that this is similar to a question from part one, but now we are talking about people in general , rather than your personal opinion. This is much harder to do, and of course here you are expected to speak for longer. You might give an answer like this:

• I think that weather definitely affects people’s behaviour. You just have to go outside on a sunny day to see how friendly people are compared to when it’s raining. Also, when the weather is really bad you see people looking depressed and often acting with impatience towards others. People do things like fight over taxis or push rudely past each other when it’s rainy and cold. So, yeah, it definitely has an impact.

This answer is much longer than my first ones, and you can see how each sentence sort of adds a little more to the idea. There is also a basic introduction and conclusion as I tell my listener what I think and then summarize what I said. But is there much difficult weather vocabulary? Not really. There isn’t too much that you can really say in a question like this, as it relates more to a person’s mood than actual weather.

Weather for IELTS Writing

It is less common that you will encounter the topic of weather for IELTS writing, but it could still happen. For one example, you may see weather appear in task 1 as you have to describe patterns of rainfall or hours of sunshine. However, this really wouldn’t require much knowledge of the weather, as you are just expected to describe what you see.

For task 2, there is definitely more scope but the topic of weather is a bit limited. Instead, you would probably see it arise within the greater topic of environment . For example, look at the following question and sample answer. I will highlight some useful vocabulary that may be helpful for you in giving more complex descriptions of weather and the related issue of global warming.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Question: Weather

Global warming is one of the biggest threats to our environment. What causes global warming? What solutions are there to this problem?

Sample Answer

It is clear that the earth’s climate is changing due to human activity. The weather is growing increasingly erratic , and temperatures are soaring in many places. This essay will explore the reasons for this, as well as some possible solutions.

Our modern style of living is causing huge damage to the planet in a number of ways. For one thing, people want constant comfort in their homes, and this means huge amounts of energy must be generated to provide them with electricity, not to mention the production of goods that make them feel happy. As such, power stations and factories around the world ch urn out huge volumes of emissions that go straight into the atmosphere and cause terrible damage. This is compounded by emissions from cars and airplanes, which are also continually rising as the population grows and people become more mobile. Altogether, these cause global warming by changing the earth’s atmosphere and trapping heat .

The problem needs to be dealt with immediately or else there will be no chance of saving the planet later. Governments around the world need to work together to stamp out toxic emissions from factories, power stations, and transportation. Once lowered, these should also be offset by planting more trees to replace carbon dioxide with oxygen. Doing all this will take a massive effort, but it is important that the world is in agreement. Primarily, the responsibility falls on the shoulders of governments, who will need to impose regulations to stop corporations and individuals from perpetrating more destruction upon the environment .

In conclusion, the earth is dying because of human actions, and the whole world will need to act immediately to reverse the damage.

IELTS Reading and Listening Topic: Weather

I don’t really recommend preparing for IELTS reading and listening in terms of topic because actually the topics here are much wider, particularly for reading. In the reading test, you could be given a passage about almost anything, and for listening the final lecture is pretty much the same. Theoretically, any of those could well relate to weather, but you wouldn’t really be expected to know that much about it. Instead, you’d just be expected to have the basic English skills required to pick apart the grammar and main ideas.

Of course, knowing about the weather is useful and you should definitely study it. Reading and listening to English sources like news articles is always helpful and if these are about weather, it may give you a slightly better chance at IELTS listening and reading. (Pro tip: Try watching the weather forecast in English.)

Important Language for Discussing the Weather

As we have seen, most of the questions that are likely to arise in IELTS relating to the topic of weather are actually quite simple, and you wouldn’t need to know complex terminology for the topic. It would be enough to know words like hot, cold, rain, sun, etc. Of course, you also need to know the noun and adjective forms:

Most that is pretty simple, but if you want to impress the examiner a little more, you can try using slightly more specific language. By this, I mean that you don’t just have to say “rain” or “rainy.” It rains a lot in the UK, so we have many words for this type of weather. 😄

We can use other nouns to describe particular kinds of rain:

We can also use an adjective to modify the word “rain”:

• Driving rain
• Pouring rain
• Torrential rain
• Freezing rain

We could also use some verbs to talk about how it was raining:

• The rain battered down around us.
• It was pouring rain all night.
• The rain seemed to go right through us.
• It just sprinkled down for an hour and then stopped.

You see, it is possible to extend your vocabulary a little from “rain” to using a wider range of language. None of those words or phrases is particularly “advanced” but they all offer a chance to go beyond the most basic and obvious term.

When talking about weather, there are different types of word that we can use. I showed you above that we can vary how we talk about rain by using verbs, adjectives, and nouns. Well, that is possible for some types of weather.

We can say “it is + adjective”:

• It is sunny.
• It is rainy.

Or “it is a(n) adjective + day”:

• It is a sunny day.
• It is a rainy day.

We can also say “it is verb+ing”:

• It is raining.
• It is snowing.

Or we can even use “there +noun”:

• There is snow outside.
• There will be thunder later.

Some words can be adapted to all forms:

• It’s raining! (verb)
• It’s rainy! (adjective)
• There’s been a lot of rain recently. (noun)

However, others can’t:

• It’s sunning!
• It’s sunny!
• There’s been a lot of sunshine recently.

Here is a PPT I made for my former students. It contains some interesting language about weather. I recommend that you download it and play it on your computer so that you can challenge yourself without seeing the answers first.

I would like to mention here that I have missed out some apparently obvious questions from above. The questions I might have also included were things like, “What’s your favourite season?” Actually, I feel that there is a slight distinction between seasons and weather , and so I will keep this particular article devoted to the latter. It could also be argued that there is some crossover into the topic of climate change and environment because obviously the current phenomenon of global warming is related to the weather. However, I will also leave this aside for now and just focus on more basic weather questions.

I would love to tell you about that weather which makes me happy inside out, and it’s rainy weather. 

This weather occurs randomly. I’m not a fan of the rainy season, which comes in June-July in India, and during the rainy season, it rains all the time; it makes me depressed. I mostly like rainy and cloudy weather, which occurs during the summers for a day or two. It gives relief from the sizzler days. 

I go out with my sisters and brother for the outing on our bicycles, which we usually don’t do. The way the cold breeze hits my body and gives me goosebumps is just unexplainable. I do not have words to express how cheerful I feel during such weather.

Due to the pleasant weather, I cook Indian fried foods such as Pakoras and Samosas. My friends and family say I am a good cook, and all the family members enjoy the delicious dishes with flavored tea. I love tea with the flavor of cardamoms.

• What’s the weather like in your country each season?

Well, I was born and grew up in a tropical country, so it’s pretty much hot and humid all year-round. However, in Northern cities, we actually enjoy four distinct seasons. In summery months, it can get really  sweltering , and by contrast, temperatures can really  dip  in winter. 

• What type of weather do you like best?

I’d consider myself a  cold weather person . I love the  crisp  mornings at the end of fall and the chill of winter. Maybe it’s because we have to  bundle up  as the weather turns cold, and I love wearing sweaters and overcoats.

• Does the weather ever affect what you do?

You know, I gotta say yes, especially when it rains. I mean, I cannot go out and  run my errands  if it’s pouring outside. The roads get  slippery , so it’s quite dangerous to drive. Besides, you will be  soaked  if you do decide to go out.

• Does it rain a lot in your hometown?

Well, it depends on the season. In winter and spring, there is a  dearth of rain  associated with the  arid weather . In contrast, it is usually  raining cats and dogs  in summer and august, causing  loads of troubles  for people travelling on the road.

• Does rain ever affect transportation in your hometown?

Yeah, of course.  Traffic is often held up  when it rains. All the  roads are clogged , and people find it difficult to  escape from traffic congestion . I would stay at home and watch TV rather than going out and being  caught up  in traffic.

I Was Taught to Hate My Freckles. I Decided to Love Them Instead.

When I was a child, visiting family in Korea was a cause for unbridled excitement. That all changed one summer, when my grandmother took me and my cousin Sang-yoon to her local salon to get our hair permed. I was eager to match my cousin, whom I adored, mostly for the fact that she was older than me. At the salon, a slight woman bowed to my grandmother and surveyed us. She immediately gasped. “What happened to her face?” I turned to my cousin, curious, only to find that everyone was staring at me. “What’s wrong?” Alarm lifted my voice high.

“She’s American,” my grandmother said. “They don’t mind freckles over there.”

The hairdresser shook her head. “We have lightening creams. We can make her look like a true Korean.”

My cheeks turned hot in reaction to this stranger’s disapproving gaze. As my grandmother waved off the woman’s protests, I looked at my cousin, a “true” Korean who had never left the country. Her skin was spotless, unblemished. I studied the others in the room—strangers getting their hair clipped, streaked with white paste, pressed in foil, heated by helmets. All were clear-complexioned, unfreckled.

That afternoon, as my hair was coiled and clipped, I scorched with shame. All year long, I had been looking forward to this trip. I was tired of the taunting at school about my lunches, my eyes, my roasted-barley tea. In Korea, everyone would understand me intuitively, I thought. I had been excited to hear only my Korean name—Hana—and to slip on this other half of me.

After that day, I examined everyone’s faces intently. My mother and aunts wore thick foundation that smoothed over any blemish, even in the humid summer heat. My grandmother lamented her brown spots. Sang-yoon and her friends made sure to stay out of the sun. The currency of beauty infiltrated daily talk: “Look at that movie star,” my aunt would say, awed, and I would turn to see a spotless face. The message was clear: To have freckles was to be imperfect. To be imperfect was to be ugly. To be ugly was the worst thing that could happen to a girl, a woman.

This aversion to freckles wasn’t limited to Korea. When I returned to the United States, my favorite novel, Anne of Green Gables , took on a heavier weight. Red-haired, gangly-limbed Anne proudly claims she can dream her freckles away. Early on, she ponders, “Have you ever imagined what it must feel like to be divinely beautiful?” As an insecure preteen, I fixated on what was left unsaid. A few summers later, I discovered beauty stories in teen magazines. The instructions always started with full-coverage foundation. Blend until you have a smooth canvas. All over the country, girls were told to paint on masks, so hideous were their natural faces.

As the years passed, I watched with alarm as my freckles spread. They refused to remain relegated to my nose and cheeks, slowly encroaching upon my eyelids and then my chin. In some places, the freckles amassed, fusing into a blob. Throughout the years, I would hear admonishments that my freckles were a flaw: “There are lightening creams, you know.” “Have you been wearing sunscreen?” “If only you could get them removed.”

By the time I was in college, my insecurity had morphed into a resentment of those who held me to this standard of beauty. I became defiant. When my mother casually claimed my freckles were ugly, I shook her off. So what if I didn’t look like a “true” Korean? So be it. I basked in the sun, calling on my speckles to create a constellation across my face.

One summer after college, at an outdoor food market in Brooklyn, a vendor pulled down his sunglasses as he handed me a hot dog covered in brisket. “Are your freckles real?”

“What do you mean?” I asked, laughing. “How could they not be?”

“There are so many. I thought maybe you drew them on. Don’t get me wrong,” he said, sliding into a compliment. “They make you stand out, not like the other Asian girls.” Was he negging me?

I was tempted to snark back. Yet in the back of my mind, a small voice wondered: Why would anyone want to draw on freckles when they were considered ugly?

I observed this proliferation of pro-freckle beauty products with bemusement. To expand our definition of beauty is a net positive. But a twinge inside me makes me hesitate: There’s a fine line between self-love and being manipulated by a market eager to churn out new products for our consumption. Is it really radical acceptance if you have to add on freckles to create the perfect “no-makeup makeup” look?

A year ago, as we were brushing our teeth in the bathroom, my then-two-year-old son noticed my freckles for the first time. “Why face dirty?” he asked, innocent and curious. How interesting, his word choice, the assumption of a flaw. He tried to wipe my cheek. “They’re freckles, and they don’t rub off. I think they’re beautiful,” I quickly added. He stopped, his finger on my chin. “Boo-tiful,” he agreed with a smile. How easy to create a new narrative.

I forgot about that moment entirely until last week, when he beckoned me to the mirror. “Umma! I look like you.” He pointed to himself with a grin. I bent down to see on his sweet, perfect cheek a brown freckle, announcing itself, proudly, hello.

Summer heat hits Asia early, killing dozens as one expert calls it the "most extreme event" in climate history

New Delhi — It's still spring but hundreds of millions of people across South and Southeast Asia have already faced scorching hot temperatures. The summer heat has arrived early, setting records and even claiming lives, and it's expected to get much worse through May and June as summer actually begins.

At the beginning of May, severe heat waves were already blamed for nearly three dozen deaths across the vast region. Schools have been forced to close weeks ahead of summer vacations and huge swaths of new crops have withered in parched farmland.

Scientists warn of wide-ranging impacts in some of the world's most densely populated regions, and they're urging governments to take immediate action to prepare for the impact of climate change and do whatever is possible to mitigate human-caused global warming.

What's happening, and where?

Several parts of India recorded maximum temperatures over 110 degrees Fahrenheit last month. On April 21, people in the eastern city of Bhagdora sweltered as the mercury touched 114.8 degrees. 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a "red alert" warning for the eastern and southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha, where temperatures have been soaring since mid-April. The IMD warned the heat wave was set to get worse before it gets better.

At least two people died in the southern state of Kerala due to suspected heat stroke over the weekend. Two other deaths were blamed on the heat in the eastern state of Odisha earlier in April.

The scorching temperatures are hitting India right in the middle of an ongoing six-week general election  — in which nearly a billion people are eligible to vote — making campaigning and voting challenging.

Authorities in neighboring Bangladesh were forced to close all schools twice over the last two weeks amid the heat wave, and temperatures soared to nearly 110 degrees on Monday. 

Several areas in Myanmar have recorded record high temperatures around 115 degrees, with a much higher heat index. The heat Index is a measure of what the temperature actually feels like, taking into account humidity, wind speed and other factors.

The heat wave conditions have been brutal in Southeast Asia, too. In the Philippines, authorities closed thousands of schools as vast areas of the country experienced drought and temperatures up to 111 degrees — unprecedented for the region in early April.

In Thailand, authorities have urged people to remain indoors when possible with 30 deaths already blamed on heat stroke this year. In the capital Bangkok, authorities said the heat index Thursday was an "extremely dangerous" 125.6 degrees. 

In Vietnam, where temperatures passed the 111 degree mark, the national weather agency warned of the risk of forest fires, dehydration and heat stroke.

"Thousands of records are being brutalized all over Asia, which is by far the most extreme event in world climatic history," weather historian Maximiliano Herrera said in a social media post last week.

What's causing the extreme heat?

Scientists are divided over the impact of the ongoing El Niño weather phenomenon, but many believe the temporary warming of the central Pacific, which has altered weather patterns worldwide for years, has made things much worse this summer in South and Southeast Asia.

"I think it's a mix of El Niño, global warming and the seasonality," Prof. Raghu Murtugudde, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai, told CBS News. " El Niño is transitioning to La Niña . This is the time when the maximum warming happens towards the Indian Ocean. So, all these things are basically adding steroids to the weather."

Murtugudde noted that the El Niño phenomenon was already established by March 2023, so last year's heat waves were also due to a combination of global warming, El Niño and the annual cycle, but he said this year was worse because of the transition to the La Niña pattern.

Not all climate scientists agree, however, about El Niño's impact.

"We saw heat waves even last year and it wasn't blamed on El Niño," Prof. Krishna AchutaRao, a scientist at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi's Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, told CBS News.

Last year, severe heat waves killed more than 100 people in India and Pakistan alone in April and May, again destroying crops and affecting millions of people.

"Just like this year, last year the heat wave extended from parts of India to Bangladesh and Myanmar, and all the way to Thailand. This year it went further east, into the Philippines. So, it's the same pattern," AchutaRao said. "I do not particularly buy into this that El Niño is the cause."

Most experts do agree, however, that climate change is one of the major causes of the brutal heat hitting Asia this spring, and scientists said last year that climate change was making heat waves 100 times more likely to occur .

AchutaRao, along with other scientists working with the World Weather Attribution organization, have compiled and analyzed data on last year's heat waves in the region and the dozens of natural disasters that came with them in Laos and Thailand. The team "concluded that [extreme weather] events like those were not possible without climate change."

"Climate change is exacerbating the frequency and severity of such events, profoundly impacting societies, economies, and, most importantly, human lives and the environment that we live in," Ko Barrett, Deputy Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization said last month.

Temperatures went through the roof globally in 2023, making it the hottest year ever recorded . The United Nations weather and climate agency said Asia was warming at a particularly rapid pace — making extreme weather events such as floods, major storms and cyclones more frequent and more dangerous .

The poor will suffer most

Around the world, countries have tried to manage the impact of extreme weather events through early warning systems and advisories, but Asia's large, poor populations will bear the brunt of the impact of the heat waves, Murtugudde told CBS News.

The heat is likely to continue inflicting widespread crop damage, further impacting the lives of farmers who've already faced increasing challenges in recent years — to the extent that hundreds of thousands staged massive protests in India to demand government help.

Many national governments restrict outdoor activity in a bid to prevent deaths during extreme heat events, which has an outsized impact on manual laborers in the construction sector — a huge part of Asia's fast-developing economies.

Scientists and environmental activists across the globe have consistently urged nations to cut greenhouse gas emissions, warning it is the only way to slow the rate of global warming. Until that happens, experts fear the death toll will keep rising, and millions of people will face a dire decision with every new heat wave: Work in dangerous conditions, or go to bed hungry.

Christopher R. Murphy, who murdered two police officers before being killed in a bloodbath in a suburban neighborhood, was racist, antisemitic and convinced that police had come to take his guns, a prosecutor said.

Detectives from the Syracuse police and the Onondaga County sheriff’s office found a trove of antisemitic and racist images, web pages and websites saved to Murphy’s phone and computer, and printed out in his room at his parents’ home, District Attorney William Fitzpatrick told Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.

Deadly tornado hits Oklahoma; more severe storms forecast to the east

Thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes could affect areas from St. Louis to Nashville on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A large, destructive tornado tore through the cities of Barnsdall and Bartlesville in northeastern Oklahoma on Monday night, as dangerous storms swept across the Plains.

One person died in Barnsdall, a city of about 1,000 people roughly 30 miles north of Tulsa, Osage County Sheriff Eddie Virden told local media . The sheriff’s office was still looking for at least one missing person Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service received reports of at least 17 tornadoes Monday night, including at least eight in Oklahoma, but the twister activity was generally less intense than feared. Severe thunderstorms also swept through Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Joplin, Mo., Kansas City and Des Moines on Monday night.

Monday marked the first of four days in which the Weather Service predicts an elevated threat of dangerous storms that could produce tornadoes as well as large hail and damaging winds. Tuesday’s highest storm threat is from the Midwest to Ohio Valley, including Indianapolis and Cincinnati, while Wednesday’s is in the mid-South and Tennessee Valley, including Nashville and Louisville. On Thursday, scattered severe storms could affect the southeast and Mid-Atlantic.

The storms come after at least 300 tornadoes were recorded in April, the second most in a month on record. Monday marked the 12th-straight day with at least one tornado in the United States.

Damage in Barnsdall and Bartlesville

As daylight broke Tuesday, images on social media revealed devastation in Barnsdall. Many homes and businesses were flattened, trees were mangled and defoliated, and vehicles flipped and crushed. One video showed a door lodged in a tree .

Radar indicated the twister hurled debris up to 30,000 feet into the air. Video showed the twister’s large, ominous wedgelike funnel.

Jerry Roberts, the emergency management director in Osage County, said Barnsdall was “still in rescue mode” early Tuesday.

Firefighters and police officers are “going through the neighborhood trying to locate any trapped persons,” he said in a phone call. “There’s been several that went to the hospital.”

Roberts added the twister appeared “to be somewhere in the neighborhood of over a half-mile wide, but we don’t know how long it is yet.”

The Weather Service was surveying the storm damage Tuesday to determine the tornado’s exact size and intensity. It found “low end EF4 damage” on the 0-to-5 Enhanced Fujita scale for tornado intensity, meaning the storm’s winds reached at least 166 mph in Barnsdall. The agency wrote on X that the rating was preliminary as it continued to survey damage.

The EF4 twister was the state’s second in just over a week, after nearly eight years without a tornado this strong. An EF4 tornado also struck near Marietta on April 27, the first in Oklahoma this strong since May 9, 2016, according to the Weather Service.

As the tornado swept through the city around 9:30 p.m. Monday, the Weather Service declared a tornado emergency, its highest alert.

“TORNADO EMERGENCY for Barnsdall,” the Weather Service wrote as the “confirmed large and destructive” storm passed. “This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. TAKE COVER NOW!”

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported 30 to 40 homes damaged in the Barnsdall area, according to an update provided by the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management at 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The department said that a natural-gas leak was reported in the city, while “numerous roads are closed due to debris in roadways.”

A nursing home was among the buildings hit in Barnsdall.

“Please pray for us,” Barnsdall Nursing Home, a 38-bed facility in the town’s southwest, wrote on social media , saying all residents were accounted for with no injuries or deaths. They had been temporarily relocated to a football field because of a gas leak that couldn’t be fixed and would be moved to other facilities.

The nursing home asked families to be patient “as it is chaos in town.”

In a Tuesday afternoon Facebook post , the Osage sheriff’s office said it was still searching for a man named Wayne Hogue who went missing from the Barnsdall area after the tornado.

Officials could not be reached for further updates Tuesday afternoon.

Trees and power lines were reportedly downed in other counties, and the Oklahoma Corporation Commission was reporting 45,227 outages statewide by 12:30 a.m., according to the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management .

For Barnsdall, it was the second tornado to hit in just over a month. On April 1, an EF1 tornado on the 0-to-5 scale for intensity caused damage in the city .

After passing Barnsdall, the storm reached Bartlesville, a city of nearly 40,000 about 15 miles to the northeast, about 30 minutes later. The city was also placed under a tornado emergency, and the twister appeared to weaken as it was passing or just afterward.

“We did take a direct hit from a tornado here in Bartlesville,” Kary Cox, the director of operations at Washington County Emergency Management, said in a video update . He urged residents to stay home overnight, saying traffic was hampering emergency efforts. Social media video showed a Hampton Inn heavily damaged by the twister; in one instance, a hotel wall was speared by a two-by-four piece of wood.

More severe weather Tuesday through Thursday

Tuesday’s severe risk

The same storm system that affected the central states Monday is moving to the northeast into the Great Lakes, with a trailing cold front extending south toward Texas, along which storms will form as warm air oozes north to the east from the Gulf of Mexico.

Louisville, Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Columbus have a Level 3 out of 5 “enhanced” risk for severe weather, including the potential for a couple of significant tornadoes. A broader Level 2 risk surrounds that zone from Chicago to Bowling Green, Ky., where a couple of tornadoes are still possible.

Wednesday’s severe risk

On Wednesday, a new low-pressure system will take shape in Oklahoma and drift northeast toward St. Louis. Warmth and humidity will again surge north. Changing winds with height, meanwhile, will support the potential for tornadoes, particularly where a warm front stretches west to east from Springfield, Mo., to Nashville. That’s where a Level 3 risk has been outlined.

A Level 2 risk stretches from Dallas to Little Rock to Louisville, and clips Memphis and Chattanooga, Tenn.

Thursday’s severe risk

On Thursday, the low-pressure system will swing the cold front toward both the Gulf and East Coasts. As that front sags southeastward, it will clash with warm, humid air. Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible, with the main threat being damaging straight-line winds and hail.

An enormous stretch of real estate is covered by a Level 2 risk including Austin; Shreveport, La.; Jackson, Miss.; Mobile, Ala.; Atlanta; Charleston, N.C.; Charlotte; Wilmington, N.C.; Richmond; Washington and Baltimore.

Why were Monday’s tornadoes less numerous and intense than feared?

Despite the destructive tornado in Barnsdall and the several tornadoes reported elsewhere, the event as a whole did not live up to dire forecasts made by government, broadcast and independent meteorologists alike.

While the ingredients were conducive to the formation of numerous strong, long-track tornadoes, it appears the Barnsdall storm was the only cell to take advantage of them. Otherwise, the ingredients didn’t combine as forecast — and meteorologists are working to understand why.

Several factors may have contributed to reduced tornado activity:

• Low-level winds didn’t take on enough of an easterly component. That means that despite rotation within storms, many cells struggled to consolidate that rotation near the ground, reducing the tornado risk.
• The storm structure did not evolve to support widespread tornado activity. “We expect storms to become supercells quickly after they form, and they should remain supercells through the event,” wrote the Weather Service in Norman before storms fired. “We do not expect them to form into a squall line or cluster.” But that’s exactly what happened — by 8 to 9 p.m., initial supercells had largely merged into a lengthy cluster, which did not promote rotation within storms. The Barnsdall tornado was able to occur because it was a lone, discrete supercell ahead of the line.
• It appears that temperatures did not fall quickly enough at the mid-levels of the atmosphere. That slowed down the speed of thunderstorm updrafts, and was further exacerbated by a “lid” of warm air high aloft. That probably inhibited updraft strength and caused updrafts to be contaminated by rainfall.
• A layer of dry air may have also reduced the storm intensity .

There is more that we still don’t know, and it will take a while for scientists to figure out what went “wrong” with the forecast. The Barnsdall tornado is proof of the atmosphere’s volatility. It’s fortunate that other storms weren’t able to take advantage of that full volatility.

Both positive and “worrying” developments have recently unfolded in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a top UN official told the Security Council on Tuesday at an emergency meeting requested by Russia.

Miroslav Jenča, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas with the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations, provided an update of recent developments since his office’s last Council briefing in July.

The country continues to grapple with issues stemming from the brutal war that killed 100,000 people across the former-Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, including the Srebrenica genocide in which 8,000 men and boys died.

The war ended with the  Dayton Peace Agreement in 1995 and the establishment of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia as separate UN Member States.

“There is consensus among the political leadership in Bosnia and Herzegovina that European integration is the best route for ensuring the country’s future stability and prosperity,” he said.

‘Unique chance’ to bridge divides

Mr. Jenča noted the decision of the European Council in March this year to open accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina, based on the European Commission’s assessment of progress made by the country on key legislative and judiciary reforms.

“ The European project has become a unique chance for the continent to bridge divides and shape a stable and prosperous future despite ongoing challenges,” the Assistant Secretary-General explained.

He said that based on a united commitment towards a stable and peaceful future, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Council of Ministers in late 2022 had sought the UN’s support through its Peacebuilding Fund to contribute to strengthening social cohesion, respect for diversity, understanding and trust , especially among young men and women in different communities.

Initiatives supported by the Peacebuilding Fund have started to be implemented , Mr. Jenča said, noting that ongoing efforts are operating in close cooperation with authorities at all levels and communities across the country.

“These projects are focused on the implementation of the women, peace and security and the youth, peace and security agendas as well as community dialogue,” he said.

Hate speech, genocide denial

At the same time, in recent months, actions and statements have emerged that contradict these positive developments, he said, pointing to concerns raised by the Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide.

He said the Special Advisor, who has undertaken official visits to Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region over the past years, has noted concerns about repeated threats of secessionism, the promotion of hate speech, the denial of genocide and the glorification of war criminals that were convicted by local and international courts.

In addition, he said, the Special Adviser recently issued statements on the dangers of these trends and their long-lasting impact on peace and reconciliation in the country and had stressed the importance of addressing the legacy of the past, including of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Lasting peace is rooted in understanding the past

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice ( ICJ ) have established that acts of genocide against the Muslims of Bosnia and Herzegovina were committed in and around Srebrenica in July 1995, he said.

“ Only by promoting the understanding of the past through truthseeking and accountability and addressing the root causes and the continued impact of such violence on society, can sustainable peace be achieved ,” he said.

Noting that the Secretary-General has consistently called on everyone in the region and beyond to counter hate speech and the rhetoric of division and narratives of mistrust and fear, he reiterated the UN chief’s message that all communities, all leaders and all organisations, including the media, must make this pledge.

‘Remarkable’ efforts to promote reconciliation

“Many people in Bosnia and Herzegovina have for decades undertaken remarkable work to promote trust and reconciliation in the country,” he said.

However, he added, it is primarily the responsibility of authorities and institutions, at all levels, to help the whole of society constructively deal with the past , to demonstrate respect for all victims and survivors, and to work towards a prosperous and peaceful future for all of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s citizens.

Recalling that the UN is not a signatory to the Dayton Peace Agreement nor a member of the Steering Board of the Peace Implementation Council, he said the Organization remains “committed to support Bosnia and Herzegovina in its path towards reconciliation, peacebuilding and sustainable development ”.

Also briefing the Council were Željka Cvijanović, of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Christian Schmidt, the UN High Representative for the country, whose office was established to oversee the implementation of civilian aspects of the Dayton Peace Agreement that ended the war.

Federal judge dismisses Musk lawsuit against hate-speech watchdog

A case brought by Elon Musk, the owner of X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, against a hate-speech watchdog group was dismissed by a federal court in San Francisco on Monday.  

In his case against the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), Musk alleged that CCDH illegally scraped data from the platform while assembling reports about the spread of hate speech and misinformation online. Musk filed the lawsuit amid pressure from civil society groups over his decision to loosen Twitter’s content moderation rules.  

Judge Charles Breyer, in a 52-page decision dismissing the case, argued the lawsuit was based around “punishing” CCDH for their speech.

“Sometimes it is unclear what is driving a litigation, and only by reading between the

lines of a complaint can one attempt to surmise a plaintiff’s true purpose. Other times, a complaint is so unabashedly and vociferously about one thing that there can be no mistaking that purpose. This case represents the latter circumstance. This case is about punishing the Defendants for their speech,” Breyer wrote.

Imran Ahmed, founder and CEO of CCDH, said in a post on X , “This ruling sends a strong message to those who aim at intimidating and silencing independent research.” 

The “X News” account posted that the company “disagrees with the court’s decision and plans to appeal.”
