Masterarbeit-Vorlage als Word-Dokument

Bei der Formatierung der Masterarbeit verwendest du eine unauffällige Schriftart wie Times New Roman oder Arial. Wichtig ist, dass du in der gesamten Arbeit die gleiche Schriftart nutzt.

Als Schriftgröße für die Masterarbeit eignen sich 11 pt bei der Schriftart Arial und 12 pt bei der Schriftart Times New Roman.

Achte bei der Formatierung der Masterarbeit darauf, die Schriftgröße in den Überschriften, in den Fußnoten und im Fließtext immer einheitlich zu gestalten.

Formatierungsregeln für die Masterarbeit

Warum ist die formatierung der masterarbeit so wichtig.

Kümmern Sie sich vor dem Beginn des Schreibens um die Formatierung! Abhängig von den Formatierungsregeln der Masterarbeit kann die Formatierung einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf den Seitenumfang haben, sodass eine nachträgliche Formatierung zu einem zu hohen oder zu geringen Seitenumfang führen kann. Die Nacharbeiten sind dann wesentlich anstrengender.

Galt es lange, dass die Formatierung der Masterarbeit nur das Tüpfelchen auf dem i darstellt, geht diese mittlerweile mit bis zu 30 Prozent mit in die Endnote ein. Die Relevanz eingehaltener Formatierungsregeln ist damit signifikant gestiegen und stellt ein wichtiges Element einer erfolgreichen und damit auch gut benoteten Masterarbeit dar. Nicht jede Masterarbeit wird jedoch auf Basis derselben Formatierungsregeln geschrieben. Durch die gestiegene Relevanz der Einhaltung von Formatierungsregeln sollten entsprechende Guidelines gründlich gelesen und umgesetzt werden, um ein positives Ergebnis zu erzielen. Hierfür bietet sich ggf. auch das Arbeiten mit einer bereits vorgefertigten Formatvorlage an.

Die Formatierung kann hierbei je nach Formatierungsregeln für die Masterarbeit – und natürlich auch abhängig vom Knowhow des Nutzers – 30 bis 60 Minuten Arbeitszeit beanspruchen. Am einfachsten gestaltet sich die Formatierung dann, wenn die einzelnen Elemente nicht per Hand formatiert, sondern die Formatvorlagen von Microsoft Word genutzt werden. Diese erlauben nicht nur ein automatisches Erstellen aller Verzeichnisse im Anschluss, sondern gestatten es ebenfalls, einzelne Elemente im Falle von Änderungsbedarf automatisch zu aktualisieren.

Was muss bei der Formatierung einer Masterarbeit beachtet werden?

Wichtig ist, dass Sie sich strikt an die formalen Vorgaben halten, sofern diese nicht von den individuellen Wünschen Ihrer Betreuungsperson für die Masterarbeit abweichen. Die betreuende Professorin bzw. der betreuende Professor hat in den meisten Fällen das letzte Wort, im Zweifelsfall sollten Sie hier also Rücksprache halten, wenn Sie vorhaben, von etwaigen Formatierungsregeln für die Masterarbeit abzuweichen.

Da die Formatierung ohnehin gemacht werden muss, empfiehlt es sich, sie schon zu Beginn des Arbeitsprozesses gründlich umzusetzen, sodass Sie diese nicht auf den letzten Drücker erledigen müssen und von etwaigen Schwierigkeiten aufgehalten werden. Eine erste Priorität im Zeitplan für die Masterarbeit sollte daher die korrekte und gründliche Formatierung sein.

Schriftgrad, Schrifttypen, Zeilenabstand und Überschriften

Grundsätzlich gilt natürlich, dass jeder Masterarbeit andere Formatierungsregeln zugrunde liegen. Weder innerhalb Deutschlands noch der DACH-Region – geschweige denn international – haben sich bisher standardisierte Formatierungsregeln durchgesetzt, sodass die folgenden Ausführungen ggf. von den eigenen Vorgaben abweichen können. Die Umsetzung der Formatierungsregeln ist jedoch technisch immer gleich gelöst, sodass eine Orientierung an den folgenden Ausführungen zielführend ist.

In den meisten Fällen wird ein Schriftgrad von 12 Punkten für Serifenschriften (bspw. Times New Roman) bzw. von 11 Punkten für serifenlose Schriften (bspw. Arial) bei einem Zeilenabstand von 1,5 Punkten vorgegeben. Von Times New Roman oder Arial wird hierbei als Vorgabe nur selten abgewichen. Die betreffenden Einstellungen können über die Formatvorgabe Standard, die bei Word hinterlegt ist, vorgenommen werden. Hier finden Sie neben den Einstellungen zu Schriftgrad, Schrifttyp und Zeilenabstand auch andere Einstellungsmöglichkeiten wie bspw. den Absatzabstand. Wichtige Einstellungen zur Formatierung Ihrer Masterarbeit sind:

• Einstellen der Schriftart und Schriftgrad über die Formatvorlage Standard, bevorzugt Arial in Schriftgrad 11 oder Times New Roman in Schriftgrad 12
• Einstellen des Zeilenabstandes über die Formatvorlage Standard, bevorzugt 1,5 Punkte, sofern es sich nicht um Fussnoten mit einfachem Zeilenabstand handelt
• ggf. Einstellen des Absatzabstandes über die Formatvorlage Standard, bevorzugt 6 Punkte nach einem Absatz, um die Lesbarkeit zu optimieren

Auch die Einstellung der Überschriftenformatierung erfolgt über die Formatvorlagen. Hier bietet Word einzelne Vorlagentypen für die verschiedenen Überschriftenebenen an. Wichtig ist nicht nur die Formatierung, sondern auch der eigentliche Sinn der Überschriften spielt eine Rolle, denn diese strukturieren Ihren Text und helfen Lesenden dabei, Ihre Gedanken nachzuvollziehen.

Formatierungsregeln für die Zitation

Als Daumenregel gilt, dass bspw. der Schriftgrad für eingerückte, direkte Zitate – sogenannte Blockzitate – um zwei Punkte herabgesetzt wird. Wenn Sie also in Arial Schriftgrad 12 schreiben, sollte der Text von Blockzitaten in Schriftgrad 10 gesetzt werden. Schreiben Sie in Times New Roman Schriftgrad 11, sollte der Text von Blockzitaten in Schriftgrad 9 gesetzt werden.

Hinweis Blockzitate sollen ins Auge fallen und stellen Aussagen aus der untersuchten Literatur dar, die besonders wichtig für Ihre Masterarbeit sind. Hierbei handelt es sich dementsprechend meistens um Definitionen, aber auch um Aussagen, die von Ihnen angestellte Überlegungen zusätzlich validieren.

Zur Hervorhebung erfolgt weiterhin eine Einrückung, und zwar entweder um einen Zentimeter auf der linken Seite oder um je einen Zentimeter auf der linken und der rechten Seite. Manchmal wird der Zeilenabstand von 1,5 Punkten auf einen einfachen Zeilenabstand verringert, manchmal werden jedoch auch die 1,5 Punkte beibehalten. Ebenfalls uneinheitlich wird die Verwendung von Anführungszeichen gestaltet: Häufig werden diese aufgrund der Hervorhebung weggelassen, manchmal jedoch auch beibehalten.

Blocksatz oder Flattersatz?

Der Unterschied zwischen dem Blocksatz und dem Flattersatz besteht darin, dass das Schriftbild beim Blocksatz auf beiden Seiten bündig ist, während es beim Flattersatz lediglich auf der linken Seite bündig ist. Während Sie beim Blocksatz darauf achten sollten, nicht nur die automatische Silbentrennung einzuschalten, sondern diese auch noch einmal händisch zu prüfen, kann darauf beim Flattersatz verzichtet werden, da Word bzw. auch andere Textverarbeitungsprogramme die Zeile automatisch umbrechen, wenn das Wort nicht mehr in Gänze in die Zeile passt.

Tipps und Tricks zum Mogeln

Oberste Priorität hat es, die Formatierungsregeln Ihrer Masterarbeit einzuhalten, trotzdem gibt es kleine Tricks, mit denen Sie den Text Ihrer Masterarbeit um ein bis zwei Seiten ‚strecken‘ können, ohne dass es Ihrem Dozenten auffällt (das gilt natürlich nur, wenn die Unter- bzw. Obergrenze in Seiten und nicht in Wörtern oder gar Zeichen angegeben wird):

• Verwenden Sie einen Absatzabstand im Text Viele Formatierungsregeln für Masterarbeiten umfassen keine Vorgaben zum Absatzabstand. Ein Absatzabstand von 6 Punkten verleiht Ihrem Text mehr Struktur, entzerrt das Schriftbild und sorgt für ein angenehmeres Lesen – er schenkt Ihnen vor allem aber auch einige Seiten mehr, die Sie dann weniger schreiben müssen. Sollte ein Absatzabstand in den Formatierungsregeln festgelegt sein, kann es sich anbieten, diesen um ein bis zwei Punkte zu erhöhen, da dies beim Lesen kaum auffällt, Sie den Text aber trotzdem weiter gestreckt bekommen. Wenn Sie die Masterarbeit (auch) als Word-Datei einreichen müssen, sollten Sie darauf natürlich verzichten.
• Verwenden Sie einen Absatzabstand bei Überschriften Auch hierzu finden sich selten Vorgaben in den Formatierungsregeln für Masterarbeiten und gerade nach den Überschriften bietet sich ein Absatzabstand von bspw. 12 Punkten an, um einen angenehmen Abstand zum folgenden Text zu schaffen.
• Verzichten Sie auf die Silbentrennung Zwar ist es so, dass die Silbentrennung für einen angenehmeren Zeilenumbruch sorgt und unnötige Zwischenräume zwischen Wörtern vermeidet, sie sorgt aber auch dafür, dass der Text sich auf weniger Seiten erstreckt. Verzichten Sie auf die Silbentrennung, um einige Seiten Text zu gewinnen.
• Setzen Sie Fussnoten Sollten die Formatierungsregeln für Ihre Masterarbeit keine Vorgaben zur Zitationsart machen, bieten sich Fussnoten an, um den Seitenumfang zu erhöhen, denn diese nehmen am Seitenende ihren Platz ein und strecken das Schriftbild.

MFA thesis exhibit opens May 14 at Sarah Spurgeon Gallery

Starting next week, the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery at Central Washington University will host "Anemoia," a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) thesis exhibition by Matthew Potter and Charlie Tadlock.

The opening events will take place on Tuesday, May 14, beginning with an artist talk from 4-5 p.m. in Randall Hall, room 117. The talk will be directly followed by a reception in the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery from 5-7 p.m.

Potter’s large-scale works on paper investigate memory through the viewpoint of abstraction. The surfaces develop a history within themselves as a result of repeated and densely layered applications of various media.

Memory itself is imbued in the marks. Potter’s childhood, spent constantly moving across the U.S. and Europe, is a major theme in his work. In addition to pursuing his painting degree at CWU, Potter has an artist studio with the ’57 Biscayne artist collective, located in the Good Art Building in Seattle’s Pioneer Square.

Tadlock’s lens-based media and installation works focus on the road through the rural American West. The regional identity of rugged independence has created a culture that centers around transience, and that positions prosperity and people as temporary. His artwork is held in the permanent collections of the University of Wyoming and Montana State University.

Tadlock is a two-time recipient of the CWU Behnke Graduate Fellowship and was recently awarded the Society for Photographic Education’s Innovations in Imaging Award for 2024.

The exhibit will remain on view through June 1. Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 1-5 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sundays and will be closed May 27 for Memorial Day.

The master of sacred theology (S.T.M.) degree provides the opportunity to gain further mastery in a chosen area of theological study. Students will attain and apply the skills needed for scholarly research in a theological discipline at an advanced level. The S.T.M. program is intended for those who may wish to prepare for graduate study at the doctoral level or for various forms of teaching, to enhance their scholarly understanding of ministerial practice, or to engage in disciplined reflection in an area of ministry. 

Students must complete a minimum of thirty semester hours of academic credit with a grade point average of 3.00 or higher. Six of the hours must be in the form of a thesis. The student, working in consultation with a thesis supervisor from the faculty of the School of Theology, will develop a proposal and write a thesis demonstrating scholarly competence, and pass an examination covering the area of the thesis and major specialization.

The normal paradigm is two classes in each of four summers and registration for thesis hours after the fourth summer. A student may not register for thesis hours until the thesis proposal has been approved. A student may choose to finish sooner by registering for the thesis hours in January after the fourth summer in order to graduate in May of that year.

Thesis and Candidacy

The student will be required to complete a thesis demonstrating scholarly competence. The purpose of the S.T.M. thesis is to demonstrate the ability to research an issue and to write in a clear and concise manner. It is not expected that every thesis will be “an original contribution to knowledge,” but it must make a significant contribution to the student’s understanding of their area of specialty.

In preparation for the thesis proposal and candidacy request, the student will consult with the director of the advanced degrees program about the general subject of the thesis. The director will work with the student to choose a supervisor for the preparation of the proposal. The supervisor will be a member of the teaching faculty of the School of Theology, and will serve as the first reader. Guidelines are provided for writing the thesis proposal, and the thesis itself.

Upon approval of a thesis proposal, the committee will select, or approve the student’s request of, the second reader. The committee will consider the thesis subject and the potential reader’s expertise, workload, and availability. Readers are ordinarily faculty of the University. On occasion, an outside scholar with particular expertise in the thesis subject may be contracted as a reader. 

Examination

An oral defense covering the area of the thesis and major specialization is also required. This may be accomplished in person, by conference call, or video conference, as circumstances may demand. A final, library copy of the thesis is submitted to the coordinator of academic affairs for binding.

As MHC binding is considered the most selective step in T cell recognition, many existing bioinformatics systems focus on modeling this step to predict MHC binders. However, modeling MHC binding alone is insufficient for accurate immunogenicity predictions, often resulting in false positives. With the recent technological advancements, large amounts of mass spectrometry (MS)-identified MHC class I ligands became available to the public, making it possible to incorporate information from antigen processing steps before MHC binding. We collected >5,000 binding peptides and >4,000 eluted ligands for H2-Dᵇ, and>5,000 binding peptides and >5,000 eluted ligands for H2-Kᵇ. The thermostability assessment of MHC peptide binding evaluates the strength and duration of the interaction between the peptide and the MHC molecule under varying temperatures. Our collaborators at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute performed temperature gradient experiments to investigate the stability of peptide-MHC complexes for H2-Dᵇ and H2-Kᵇ alleles under three temperature conditions, 37°C, 50°C, and 70°C, using the MS technique.  We ended up with over 3,000 H2-Dᵇ binding peptides and over 5,000 H2-Kᵇ binding peptides. The data enable us to perform a comprehensive thermostability analysis of MHC binding.

In this thesis project, we developed a computational system for identifying T-cell epitopes in C57BL/6 mice by integrating relevant contributing factors, such as the antigen processing steps before MHC binding and thermostability, with the MHC binding predictions. Utilizing deep learning methods, we first trained and rigorously validated the binding prediction models using naturally eluted H2-Kᵇ and H2-Dᵇ ligands collected from public resources. Then, we built Thermostability models using proprietary data generated by our collaborators. We compared the performance of our models with that of NetMHCPan-4.1, an online prediction tool validated by many benchmark studies to be one of the most accurate predictors. Our integrated model, combining the binding and the Thermostability models, exhibited superior predictive capabilities using an external validation dataset, surpassing the overall performance of the NetMHCPan-4.1 model.  We consolidated the models into a user-friendly web-based application named PREDBL6 to facilitate accurate predictions of immunogenic peptides that stably bind H2b molecules and stimulate immune responses in C57BL/6 mice. To our knowledge, this is the first online T cell epitope prediction system that simulates MHC binding and considers other antigen processing steps and thermostability in a model organism.
