Always ensure to check your university’s formatting requirements to be sure you’ve chosen the correct location for your acknowledgements section.

However, while this structure is recommended, it’s essential to adapt it based on any specific guidelines from your university. So, be sure to always check (and adhere to) any requirements or norms specific to your university.

Although your acknowledgements will not be used to evaluate your work, it is still an important section of your thesis. This is because it can have a positive (or negative for that matter) influence the perception of your reader before they even reach the main body of your work.

Who Should I Acknowledge?

Acknowledgements for a PhD thesis will typically fall into one of two categories – professional or personal.

Within these categories, who you thank will ultimately be your decision. However, it’s imperative that you pay special attention to the ‘professional’ group. This is because not thanking someone who has played an important role in your studies, whether it be intentional or accidental, will more often than not be seen as a dismissal of their efforts. Not only would this be unfair if they genuinely helped you, but from a certain political aspect, it could also jeopardise any opportunities for future collaborations .

Professional Acknowledgements

This may include, but is not limited to:

• Funding bodies/sponsorship providers
• Supervisors
• Research group and lab assistants
• Research participants

When producing this section, your writing style can be more informal compared to the rest of your thesis. This includes writing in first person and using more emotive language. Although in most cases you will have complete freedom in how you write this section of your thesis, it is still highly advisable to keep it professional. As mentioned earlier, this is largely because it will be one of the first things your assessors will read, and so it will help set the tone for the rest of your work.

In terms of its structure, acknowledgements are expected to be ordered in a manner that first recognises the most formal support before moving onto the less formal support. In most cases, this follows the same order that we have outlined in the ‘Who Should I Thank’ section.

When thanking professionals, always write out their full name and provide their title. This is because although you may be on a first-name basis with them, those who read your thesis will not. By providing full names and titles, not only do you help ensure clarity, but it could also indirectly contribute to the credibility of your thesis should the individual you’re thanking be well known within your field.

If you intend to include a list of people from one institution or organisation, it is best to list their names in alphabetical order. The exception to this is when a particular individual has been of significant assistance; here, it would be advisable to list them.

How Long Should My Acknowledgements Be?

Acknowledgements vary considerably in length. Some are a single paragraph whilst some continue for up to three pages. The length of your acknowledgement page will mostly depend on the number of individuals you want to recognise.

As a general rule, try to keep your acknowledgements section to a single page. Although there are no word limits, creating a lengthy acknowledgements section dilutes the gratitude you’re trying to express, especially to those who have supported you the most.

Where Should My Acknowledgements Go?

In the vast majority of cases, your acknowledgements should appear directly after your abstract and before your table of contents.

However, we highly advise you to check your university guidelines as a few universities set out their own specific order which they will expect you to follow.

We are going to provide the basic guidelines below but please make sure to review the style guide of your university or department, as each institution might have some specific requirements as regards the contents and/or formatting of the acknowledgement section in your thesis.

So, here are several key recommendations for writing the acknowledgement section.

Whom to thank in the acknowledgement

This is up to you to decide whom to acknowledge. Select those persons who indeed contributed to your research or helped you perform your duties. In general, there are two main groups of persons to consider: professionals and personal acquaintances.

Professional acknowledgements

You can say a thank you to your:

• Thesis supervisor.
• Thesis opponents.
• Co-authors of your scientific papers.
• Research participants.
• Colleagues.
• Companies providing funding.
• Any other individuals or entities who anyhow contributed to the effective process of writing the dissertation.

Acknowledging the contribution of professionals is important from the perspective of academic integrity but also in terms of scientific ethics.

When addressing professionals, make sure to write their names in full and include their titles (e.g. associate professor at the Department…, PhD , etc.). This is important for identifying the contributors unequivocally. At the same time, it also makes your research look more credible and professional.

Personal acknowledgements

These include any persons other than professionals whom you would like to thank, e.g.:

• Parents or relatives (father/mother, grandparents, husband/wife, children, etc.).
• People who inspired or supported you.

Do not include any personal details, except the first name and last name (e.g. avoid giving the age, the place of living, etc.).

Language and style

The acknowledgement section differs from the rest of your PhD thesis, as it does not relate directly to the research, is addressing your readers, and thus can be less formal.

• Keep your language simple. Avoid complex and long phrases. Keep everything simple and straightforward.
• Your writing can be more informal. In the acknowledgement section, you can use more appealing and emotive language. Furthermore, you can use sentences in the first person (while you should use the impersonal or the passive form when presenting the results of your research in the body of your thesis).
• Remain within the academic framework. While the acknowledgement section is more informal, do not push too hard and remain within the framework of academic writing.
• Do not use dotted lists for names. Mention all the persons in sentences, do not present their names as dotted or numbered lists.

Length of the acknowledgement section

Your acknowledgement section should never be too long. As a rule, it should be at most 1 page. Do not try to overextend this section if less is sufficient for thanking your contributors.

Where to put the acknowledgement in the thesis

Most often, your acknowledgement goes after the abstract and before the table of contents or between the declaration and the table of contents. Please check the guidelines of your university or department.

Thesis acknowledgements: Samples and how to write your own thesis or dissertation acknowledgements

Writing a thesis can be tricky. That’s why I’m starting a new series covering each section of the thesis, from thesis acknowledgements all the way to conclusions. I’ll be guiding you through the whole process, from what to include in your thesis to how to write it, along with examples from defended theses to help you to write your own.

We’ll begin by covering thesis acknowledgments. The acknowledgements section appears at the start of the thesis so it is often one of the first parts that everyone tries to tackle. As this will likely be your first taste of your thesis it can often feel quite intimidating to write!

Thankfully it’s also one of the easiest parts of the thesis to complete, which may help to give you a boost for the rest.

In this post we’ll cover everything to do with thesis acknowledgements: samples, what to include and how to write them. At the end I’ll also outline a 60 minute exercise which will get you preparing a first draft of your own! I’ve also got a similar post to craft your thesis title, which you can check out here .

I’m writing this post with a PhD thesis in mind but it could work just as well if you’re looking for help including acknowledgements in your Master’s or undergraduate thesis/ dissertation.

What is the purpose of the acknowledgements section in a thesis?

The acknowledgements section of your thesis is an opportunity to reflect on the people who have supported and shaped your PhD experience.

Don’t worry, although your examiners will be interested to read your acknowledgements section, you won’t really get judged on it in your PhD viva. This section is for you to share as little, or as much, as you want about everyone involved in your PhD journey.

The acknowledgements are a very personal section of your thesis and each PhD student will have different things they want to include. For example, many people wonder: How do I thank my family in a thesis? And the acknowledgements section is the answer!

Note – You can also use a thesis dedication to thank your family. This is a separate section to your thesis acknowledgements and is entirely optional. It’s usually just a single line, just like you might find at the front of some books. Most people don’t include a separate dedication section but you can if you want to go that extra step.

What to include in your thesis acknowledgements

There are usually no formal requirements dictating what to include in your acknowledgements. However, do double check for any potential rules at your specific institution.

In general the acknowledgements are the section of your thesis where you have some creative liberty and are not bound by rigid research protocols or guidelines.

Many students choose to use the acknowledgements section to thank people (or organisations) who:

• Introduced them to the topic
• Helped with their PhD application
• Funded the project
• Supervisors
• Technicians
• Partners, friends or family
• Or anyone else who made an impression along the way!

But remember, you can include whatever you want! For example in my own PhD acknowledgements, which you’ll read further down this post, I thanked the university for providing a green outdoor space for us.

Acknowledge whoever and whatever influenced your own PhD experience.

You may find it helpful to start by writing a list of everyone you wish to thank.

How do you write an acknowledgements section?

Since there are no guidelines to worry about, it is really up to you how you write your own thesis acknowledgements. You have a lot of freedom for what to include and how to write it.

However you may find the following suggested phases helpful as a starting point.

Who you want to thank…

• “First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to…”
• “I must thank…”
• “A special thanks to…”
• “I would like to highlight two truly exceptional people from…”
• “I want to thank…”
• “In addition, I would like to mention”
• “I would also like to extend my thanks to…”
• “I want to give my deepest appreciation to…”
• “Finally, but the most importantly, I would like to thank…”

…then, why you want to thank them

It can be nice to also include why you’re thanking these people, using phrases such as:

• “…for the opportunity to be a part of this project”
• “…for always being there when I needed his support, reviewing my progress constantly, and guiding me through my PhD studies”
• “….for being a great bunch of people in and out of the lab”
• …”for all the guidance, support and outstanding feedback”
• “… who took their time to help teach me…”
• “…for her unlimited support and unconditional guidance during my PhD journey”
• “…were always there for discussions about anything that I was unsure on”
• “…whom has offered invaluable advice that will benefit me throughout my life”
• “…for supporting me since my undergraduate, and for the valuable discussions we had along the road”
• “…for making the past 4 years much more enjoyable and keeping me sane throughout the whole process”

Here is a whole example from an accepted PhD thesis:

Some people will choose to use full names and titles for any professional acknowledgements and first names for any personal ones. Again, this is up to you.

To help illustrate the variety of thesis acknowledgement formats, we’ll shortly be coming on to some examples of acknowledgment sections from successfully defended theses.

Before then I want to cover some of the main questions relating to how to write your own thesis acknowledgements section:

How long should you spend writing your thesis acknowledgements?

My suggestion is to spend only an hour or two making a first draft. I suggest doing this well ahead of your final deadline so that you have time to come back to it. Even so, I’d certainly look to spend far less than one day’s work on it in total.

It is a “nice to have” and means a lot to a lot of people, but remember you’re really only writing this section for yourself. I probably spent about two hours writing mine in total, simply because it wasn’t a priority for me.

What order should you write your acknowledgements in?

A typical way to write your acknowledgements is to go from the most formal/academic relationships to the least.

It is normal to start with any funding bodies, then formal people like your PhD supervisors, then move through labmates, friends and family. But again, there are generally no rules!

How long should the acknowledgements section be?

You can include as much or as little as you want. My own PhD acknowledgements section was just under a page long and it consisted of 386 words or 1892 characters (without spaces).

But let’s not just look at my thesis. Using Imperial’s publicly accessible database I went through 25 published PhD theses for you.

The average (mean) length of these 25 theses was 365 words and 1793 characters without spaces. Writing an acknowledgements section of length 350-450 words was the most common:

The shortest acknowledgements sections was 122 words(653 characters) long. The longest one consisted of 1022 words and 5082 characters. Hopefully this illustrates that you’re not really bound by any limits. Write as much or as little as you want for this section.

Therefore, it is possible there are typos in there, if you read any of it: firstly well done, I haven’t looked at it much since submitting the final copy, secondly, please don’t tell me about any typos you find!

My top tips for writing your own thesis acknowledgements

• Don’t spend too long on them. The acknowledgements section is really not worth spending too much time on. Even worse, since they appear at the start of your thesis, it is tempting to write your acknowledgements first. This can be fine, or, it can be an opportunity for lots of unnecessary procrastination. Which I why I instead suggest that you…
• Write your acknowledgements at the end of your first draft of the thesis. There is no need to write your thesis in the order it is presented. If you write your acknowledgements at the end you’ll be less likely to spend precious time on a section which really doesn’t warrant too much brain power.
• Don’t stress about it. The acknowledgements are merely for yourself and for anyone close to you that you want to thank. There are far more important sections for you to be particular about!
• Remember: You can make changes after you submit the copy for your viva. As with everything in your thesis, you can make changes after you submit the thesis for your viva. The real “final” copy is when you submit your thesis to the university for archiving. Which is even more reason to not spend too much time writing it the first time around.

Draft your own thesis or dissertation acknowledgements in 60 minutes

Hopefully you now feel inspired to start writing your own thesis acknowledgments!

For the exercise below I’d suggest setting a stop-watch on your phone and move on to the next section when the alarm goes, even if you’ve not fully finished. The aim is to have a rough draft at the end which you can polish off at a later point in time.

• Read a few of the example thesis acknowledgements above to get a feel for the structure ( 15 mins )
• List everyone (or everything!) you wish to thank – including any personal and professional acknowledgements in addition to funding bodies if relevant ( 10 mins )
• Decide on a rough order in which to thank them ( 5 mins )
• Craft some sentences using the phrases mentioned above ( 30 mins )

Congratulations you’re now well on your way to having one section of your PhD thesis completed!

What is the thesis acknowledgment? Before you learn how to write thesis acknowledgment you need to be sure you know what it is. An acknowledgment thesis is a dedicated section where students can thank the people (or organizations) that have assisted and supported them throughout the process of researching and writing the senior or graduate thesis.

There is a time and place for a humorous anecdote, but this may be harder to achieve than you think. If you do decide to take this route, be sure to read an acknowledgment sample for a thesis to see just what qualifies as appropriate humor for this type of writing.

How to Write Acknowledgement for Thesis

Read a few thesis acknowledgments before you start writing yours. You will note that it is one of the few occasions where writing in the first person is encouraged but you must still maintain a professional tone that is appropriate for an academic document.

• Make lists for both your professional and personal master’s thesis acknowledgments. It’s better to err on the long side and then edit each list so that you only mention the most important people.
• Rearrange your professional list by placing the most important people at the top. This generally means including your thesis advisor and other teachers in your field. If you received funding from a group, you should list them among the most important acknowledgment section of the thesis.
• Next, arrange your personal list by placing the most important people at the top. Most students include family members and friends that helped along the way. When it comes to friends you don’t want to list everyone you’ve met throughout your life. Stick with those that supported you emotionally.

The acknowledgements section of your thesis provides you with an opportunity to thank anyone who supported you during the research and writing process. Before writing your acknowledgements, it's helpful to first choose who exactly you want to include. Then, you can construct your acknowledgements using the right tone and language to properly thank those who contributed to and supported your work in both academic and personal ways.

Choosing Who to Thank

• If you choose not to include funders or advisors in your acknowledgements, you could risk insulting them. This could prevent them from working with you in the future, and could even lead them to refuse to write you any letters of recommendation.
• In many cases, you'll have 1 academic advisor who is the chair of your thesis review committee, and then 2 or 3 additional faculty members who serve as secondary co-advisors. If this is the case, make sure that you include your secondary co-advisors in addition to your chair.

• This could be other faculty members, fellow students, research assistants, archivists, librarians, or other institutional personnel who assisted in the research and writing process in any way.
• Professional contributors could include people who read and reviewed your work, helped facilitate research, or talked through challenging concepts and ideas with you throughout the thesis-writing process.

• For example, while you may be close with and enjoy seeing a particular cousin or childhood friend, if they weren't actively supporting you during this time, you likely won't have space to include them in your acknowledgements.

• If a well-known academic in your field was particularly inspirational but did not read your work, you can also mention them in your acknowledgements if you have space to do so.

• If your faith is particularly important to you, you could also consider dedicating your thesis to the higher power you believe in. This could be done within the acknowledgments, or on a separate dedication page depending on your institution's formatting preferences.

• If someone was a great influence in your life but didn't contribute to your thesis directly, you could consider writing them a personal letter or email instead of including them in your acknowledgements.

Constructing Your Acknowledgements

• While there's no set rule about acknowledgement order, in general, funders are thanked first for their financial support, then academic supervisors, followed by other academics and professionals, as well as colleagues and classmates.

• If you're afraid that your personal supporters might be offended by being acknowledged last, you could explain to them that this is a professional courtesy.

• Since your academic advisor was likely a big part of your research and writing process, you'll likely want to expand on how they helped you. For example, you could write, “I would like to thank my advisor, Dr. Timothy Kelly, for his guidance and prompt feedback throughout this process.”

• In contrast, you can include only first names for your personal acknowledgements if you choose.

Using the Right Tone and Language

• If you focus on your own accomplishments too much, you could risk coming off as a bit smug. Instead, let the quality of your work speak for itself and use the acknowledgements to focus on others.

• This is particularly important to keep in mind when you thank your academic peers or faculty members that you've developed a personal relationship with, as it can be tempting to write too casually in these instances. [16] X Research source
• For example, to thank your advisor, you could write, “I could not have completed this work without the unwavering support of my chair, Dr. Sherre McWhorter. Dr. McWhorter, your patience and guidance made this work possible.”

• If your parents provided substantial support for you during this process, thank them in a personal manner by saying something like, “It is impossible to extend enough thanks to my family, especially my parents, who gave me the encouragement I needed throughout this process.”
• Instead of naming each of your friends individually, you could try thanking them collectively in a more casual manner. For example, you could write, “To my friends, this would have been a much more difficult feat without you. Thank you all for your unwavering support and for reminding me to take breaks and have fun when I’ve been stressed out.”

• If you want to thank someone for their support in a more emotional, personal manner, try thanking them in person or with a handwritten letter.

How to Handle a Difficult Relationship With Mom on Mother’s Day

From growing apart to caregiving to guilt, our moms aren’t always easy to love as we get older.

It’s almost Mother’s Day, that time of year when greeting card companies and commercials extol mothers and daughters, who lovingly show gratitude and share special, happy memories.

But if your relationship with your mom is more difficult than doting — whether that’s because you’ve always been at odds, you’ve grown apart as you’ve gotten older, or personality changes, cognitive decline or caregiving issues have come into play — it can be a tough time to figure out how to recognize the day.

Here are 10 tips for getting through the day when your relationship with your mom is less than perfect.

Accept that your mom has her own struggles

It can be taxing to deal with an aging parent who is perhaps struggling with pain, injury or disease, or who has experienced some cognitive decline and perhaps become more demanding and irrational — all while trying to live her life to its fullest.

“The more you can accept that your mother is imperfect and flawed, the easier it’s going to be on your feelings — and maybe even on the choice of what you want to do,” says Ellen I. Carni, a psychologist in New York City.

Try to keep her frustrations in mind — especially on Mother’s Day

On your side of things, maintain your objectivity and realize that you can’t control someone else’s behavior. Refrain from getting swept up in conflict by resisting the urge to argue, and try to identify what’s behind any hurtful interactions, says Lindsay Gibson, a clinical psychologist in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Focus on what you have in common

“Go large with your perspective,” urges Bob Gordon, a psychotherapist based in Washington, D.C. “Depersonalize the occasion and relationship and think about your common humanity.”

If you share an appreciation of fine art, take her to a museum, suggests Gibson. If you share a love of food, look up a popular recipe and spend an afternoon cooking together, suggests Gibson.

If your mom is in an assisted living facility that’s hosting a Mother’s Day event, join in.

If nothing else, consider showing appreciation to your mother for raising you, says Gordon. “I know it’s cliché, but we’re not here without our parents. So one way to honor them is not to try to come up with something too flowery and sentimental but simply to say, ‘Thank you for bringing me into this world.’ ”

Be active together to help you both stay positive

If you choose to get together in person, Gordon advises doing something that avoids “an intense interpersonal exchange.”

Going for a walk in nature is great because besides turning your attention to the things you see as you go, it has been shown to improve mood , increase optimism, and reduce stress, anxiety and negative rumination.

Other ideas include taking a gentle exercise class, working in the garden or watching a movie or favorite show together, says Gibson.

Work your mind away from negative thoughts

Gifting a puzzle — and offering to work on it together — is another way to go.

Not only is doing a puzzle a good option for moms who aren’t mobile, it allows the two of you to engage without the pressure of constant conversation and eye contact.

Finding one with an image your mom appreciates, such as a pretty landscape or playful cats, shows you’ve put thought into the gift. (Plus, puzzles are good for the brain — they can help combat cognitive decline — so you’d be doing your mom a favor in the process.)

Don’t live near your mom? Consider playing online games together .

Stay authentic to yourself and your parent

Respect your own time and energy limits and dial back plans that require more effort than you’d care to expend. It’s OK to just send a card if that feels like what you can handle when it comes to your relationship with your mom, says Gibson.

If even that feels like too much, mailing a short note — or even sending a text — may be enough to acknowledge a day you don’t necessarily look forward to, according to Gibson, who is the author of Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents: How to Heal From Distant, Rejecting, or Self-Involved Parents.

A phone call is also an option. Gibson proposes capping the conversation at five or 10 minutes, letting your mother know at the beginning that the call needs to be quick but that you wanted her to know you were thinking about her.

“By choosing a type of expression on Mother’s Day that fits your true feelings,” Gibson says, “you are starting a much more authentic relationship with your parent, which is probably what you wanted in the first place — and that is within your power.”

Expand the meaning of ‘motherhood’

If your relationship with your mom is less than perfect, or even if it’s nonexistent, you can celebrate Mother’s Day by honoring other women — grandmothers, aunts, mentors — who have had a meaningful impact on your life.

Carni has heard about neighbors, schoolteachers, piano teachers and others being honored for having been powerful positive influences by those who had impoverished or inadequate mothering from their biological mothers or primary caregivers.

“I’ve heard these women … called ‘spiritual mothers,’ ” she says.

D.J. Lee, 63, who wrote about the complicated relationship she shared with her mother in her memoir Remote: Finding Home in the Bitterroots , has even commemorated Mother’s Day by giving gifts to men who’ve helped her and others get through difficult situations.

“Mothering isn’t just for mothers,” says Lee, who lives in Everson, Washington.

Indulge in self-care

You know what they say about putting on your own oxygen mask first.

Carni recommends processing your feelings about Mother’s Day by reaching out to a trusted friend, journaling or writing a letter to vent any negative, mixed or complex feelings toward your mother. (The letter is not meant to be read by anyone else except, perhaps, your therapist.)

“And of course I’m biased toward therapy,” adds Carni, who credits therapy with “saving” her from her own complicated connection with her mother, who turns 101 in May. “It’s never too late to work on your relationship with your mother.”

Lee’s relationship with her mother was fraught with “some real bitterness and conflict.” So before her mother passed away in May 2023, Lee put some thought into how she could show some grace over the holiday while calming her own inner world at the same time. To recognize a love of gardening passed down to her from her grandmother and her mother, she’d buy whatever flowers or vegetable plants she could afford and have them delivered.

It was “a living gift that acknowledged the lineage of our female bloodline,” Lee says. “I realized I was doing it as a healing gesture for myself as well as my mother.”

Let go of guilt

Remember that you’re not alone — many people have challenging relationships with their mothers — and release any guilt you may feel about not being the perfect child, says Carni.

That guilt often is rooted in wishing we had feelings we want to have but don’t, explains Gibson.

“Just because we can feel regret over the quality of the relationship doesn’t mean that actual guilt is warranted,” Gibson says. “We didn’t do anything wrong by not being able to love our parent as much as we were expected to, and we can’t force ourselves to love more than we can. Come to think of it, that might’ve been our parent’s problem too.”

Remember that feelings aren’t forever

Lee says that while it may sound trite, the memories she found most prevalent after losing her mother were about the little things, such as being taken to childhood dance classes that stretched the household budget and playing games together on the floor.

Feelings tend to change once parents are gone, she says. “It’s interesting how a lot of the difficulty kind of blurs and fades, and what’s left are the moments where they did the best they could.”

Mom delivers baby in car hours before defending her Rutgers doctoral thesis

Giving birth and defending a doctoral dissertation could easily be considered among the most stressful items on a bucket list. For Tamiah Brevard-Rodriguez, it was all in a day’s work. One day’s work.

She even grabbed a shower in between.

On March 24, Brevard-Rodriguez, director of Aresty Research Center at Rutgers University, was finishing up preparations for her doctoral defense the next day. Eight months pregnant with her second child, she didn’t feel terrific, but she persisted.

She was trying to hone down to 20 minutes her remarks on “The Beauty Performances of Black College Women: A Narrative Inquiry Study Exploring the Realities of Race, Respectability, and Beauty Standards on a Historically White Campus.” The Zoom link had gone out to family, friends, and colleagues for the defense, scheduled for 1 p.m. the next day.

“Operation Dissertation before Baby,” as she called it, was a go.

But at 2:15 a.m. on March 25 her water broke, a month and a day early.

As the contractions came closer and closer, her wife drove her down the Garden State Parkway, trying to get to Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center in Montclair before Baby Enzo showed up.

But the baby was faster than a speeding Maserati and arrived in the front seat at 5:55 a.m., after just three pushes. He weighed in at 5-pounds 12-ounces, 19 inches long, and in perfect health for a baby four weeks early.

“I did have to detail her car afterward,” the new mom said of her wife.

Brevard-Rodriguez was feeling so good after the birth that she decided against asking to reschedule her thesis defense.

“I had more than enough time to regroup, shower, eat and proceed with the dissertation,” she said. She had a quick nap, too. The doctors and nurses supported her decision and made sure she had access to reliable wifi at the hospital.

She gave her defense with a Rutgers background screen. When she learned she had passed, she dropped the fake background, and people could see Brevard-Rodriguez in her maternity bed, and Enzo in her wife’s arms.

“I said, ‘You guys missed the big news,’ and they just fell out,” said Brevard-Rodriguez, who waited for the reveal because she didn’t want extra sympathy from her dissertation committee.

Melina Mangin, chair of the Educational Theory, Policy & Administration Department at the Graduate School of Education, was astounded.

“Tamiah had delivered a flawless defense with zero indication that she had just given birth,” she said. “She really took the idea of productivity to the next level!”

Finishing her doctorate in education and having her last child were fitting 40th birthday presents to herself, Brevard-Rodriguez said. She turned 40 in November and returns to work in late August.

Honors alumni Owen Bachhuber is "hooked on reptiles"

Owen Bachhuber has been fascinated by reptiles since he was a kid. It all began at his sixth birthday party as he held turtles, snakes, and lizards from The Reptile Experience operated by Mike Burpee. Mike is a kindred spirit - his love for reptiles also began in childhood. In the midst of “the throes of a mid-life crisis,” Mike left behind his career in real estate to create The Reptile Experience, providing interactive experiences with reptiles to the community - like Owen’s sixth birthday party. 

“I thought - wow, I can do that,” Owen said.

Owen joined the Minnesota Herpetological Society in fourth grade (and went on to serve as the organization’s president in 2022). By seventh grade he had his first pet snake. He volunteered at the Minnesota Zoo and the Como Zoo throughout middle school and high school. He even started an educational business using his own pet reptiles (like a smaller scale version of The Reptile Experience).

In 2018, Owen started his first year at University of Minnesota where he majored in Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology as an Honors student. His passion for reptiles didn’t stop once he started college. During his first summer break he interned at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and became a teaching assistant for zoology labs in fall 2019.

While completing a summer internship with the Turtle and Mussel Conservation in the summer of 2020, Owen listened to a podcast featuring Dr. Emily Taylor that ended up inspiring his research for his Honors thesis, Impacts of Educational Messaging on Audience Attitudes Towards Rattlesnakes .

“How people think about snakes is so important,” he said. “It affects their conservation.”

He conducted a survey with visitors of Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium before and after they walked through the Desert Dome. Then he conducted the same survey with UMN zoology students, this time before and after they learned about rattlesnake social complexity through a hands-on lecture. The latter reported higher rates of positive feelings towards snakes after the educational session.

Owen is now a student at California State Polytechnic Institute and is advised by Dr. Taylor (the same researcher who inspired his thesis) where he studies the social behavior of snakes with the innovative Project RattleCam .

RattleCam placed cameras at Prairie Rattlesnake rookeries that were timed to take photos every five minutes. These photos were made available to the public and volunteers would look through the images to report information about the snakes. The results were used to study their social behavior, the way they obtain water in the region, and to help identify local predators. 

“Time lapse camera technology is allowing us to learn about secretive animals living in remote areas,” said Dr. Taylor about the project. “We are so excited to peek into the lives of mother and baby rattlesnakes with community scientists!”

In addition to the photos, there was a companion YouTube series created featuring videos of the snakes.

“We’re able to see things we’ve never seen before,” Owen said. 

Being able to show the public the way rattlesnakes behave can help humanize them, which in turn can inspire people to protect snakes’ habitats and communities. The research team is now working on bringing what they’ve learned into classrooms to teach the next generation about the lives of snakes.

“Snakes are very social,” Owen said. “They take care of their babies, they follow each other around, they have friends, they have babysitters.”

Owen will continue to pursue his passion for reptiles wherever the path leads him. Whether that’s a PhD program or going back to working in a zoo, he’s excited to share his excitement about reptiles with the larger community.

“I feel like I’ve gotten to live the dream throughout my life,” he said. “What really gets me energized is connecting people with animals. As long as I’m doing that, I’m happy.”

Mother's Day apology: As a new mom, I realize I could have been better friend | Opinion

The gap between saying we understand the struggles of mothers and actually doing something about it is massive..

After you become a mom, one of the quintessential questions people ask is, “What’s surprised you so far about becoming a mother ?”

Depending on who is asking, I have a variety of go to platitudes:

• “How much time you waste staring at their little squishy face!”
• “No one warned me that I’d wake up in the middle of the night sopping wet from sweat.”
• “That we had to invest in a drain snake for all that postpartum hair loss.” 

But my honest answer to what surprised me most after becoming a mother is realizing how bad of a friend I was to my friends who became parents before me. 

A sincere apology to my friends who became moms first

In that first month, from sitting in the hospital recovery room to weeks recovering in a diaper on my couch, I couldn’t help but recognize the attention and care my mom friends gave me. I also couldn’t help but acknowledge how I had never shown up like that for any of my friends after they had given birth.

It surprised me because my whole life I’ve been an advocate for women. I consider myself to be an empathetic person. Based on stories I’d heard, I thought I knew how to support new moms. However, what I have discovered is that, when it comes to pregnancy, childbirth and being a new mom, you don’t really know until you know.

 For instance, you don't know:

• The amount of blood, sweat and breast milk that will involuntarily excrete from you.
• What to make of intrusive thoughts like, “What if I just fell down the stairs carrying her and no one was home to help?”
• What it is like to interrupt your workday multiple times a day to go pump in the "wellness room."
• How difficult it is to finish complete sentences when you've only had a couple hours of sleep.
• How to cobble together child care, let alone pay for it.
• What it’s like to try to feel like yourself again while also figuring out how to be someone new. 

What’s surprised me these last eight months since becoming a mom is the fundamental shift in how I think about the moms in my life, and how I show up for them in the future. 

The statistics show being a mom in the U.S. is difficult

As I reflect on how much I didn’t know until I did, I can’t help but contemplate how that gap ― the gap between listening to moms tell their experiences and experiencing what it is to be a mom ― might explain why our policies and practices make the United States such a difficult place to be a mom. 

We are one of the few countries in the world where maternal mortality rates are rising , rather than falling. We discharge women from hospitals with no codified support. We have no free British midwives making house calls and no free Swedish lactation consultants. The only medical support insurance covers is one singular appointment with your OBGYN six weeks later. 

We are the only high-income country without any provision for paid family and medical leave. To date, only 13 states and Washington, D.C., have statewide paid family leave. Almost 1 in 4 employed mothers in the U.S. are back at work within 10 days after giving birth because they can’t afford to take the unpaid leave the Family and Medical Leave Act guarantees. 

The U.S. has the second most expensive child care system in the world. In fact, 4 in 10 U.S. parents say they have gone into debt due to the cost of child care. Consequently, about 45% of working moms have considered leaving the workforce, while 13% already have , because child care now costs more than college . That’s if you can find it because, it turns out, 51% of people in the United States live in a child care desert.

Politicians say they care about moms, but little to nothing changes

It’s not like parents, especially mothers, are suffering in silence. There are campaigns and bills and marches and advocacy and hundreds of op-eds just like this one where moms are telling lawmakers, “We need change. We're drowning. It doesn’t have to be like this.”

But there’s a gap between our lawmakers hearing these problems, saying they understand the concerns, and actually enacting any impactful long term solutions. Believe me, there are solutions. We could change how insurers pay for maternity care. We could enact federal Paid Family and Medical Leave. We could invest in child care and universal preschool. We could strengthen tax credit for families.  

But that would mean we actually have to have systemic empathy for mothers, which I now know, can be hard to do. 

This Mother’s Day, I’m apologizing to my mom friends and vowing to be a better friend now that I “get it.” 

Now, if only all of our lawmakers could give birth so they could apologize and “get it” too.

In situ growth-etching synthesis of hierarchical sapo-34 from recycled mother liquor for ethanol dehydration.

Hierarchical SAPO-34 zeolite catalysts were successfully synthesized via one-step hydrothermal synthesis approach with the assistance of excess triethylamine (TEA). Compared with conventional SAPO-34 (SP-T3), SAPO-34 synthesized with TEA/Al2O3 molar ratio of 9 (SP-T9) presents high catalytic performance in ethanol dehydration reaction due to its pseudocubic morphology with abundant butterfly-like secondary large pores and slightly decreased surface acidity. Afterwards, a cost-effective and green route is developed for synthesizing hierarchical SAPO-34 catalysts by recycling waste mother liquids. In the recycling processes, the residual organic templates in the mother liquids reuse in the next synthesis of SAPO-34 without adding fresh templates. After three recycles of mother liquids, the synthesized SP-R3 catalyst still retains high crystallinity, hierarchical structure, moderate acidity, as well as excellent catalytic performance in ethanol dehydration as compared to the initial SP-T9 catalyst.
