10 best study apps and homework apps for Android

Published on June 30, 2021

This is the featured image for the best study apps for Android!

Studying is something we all have to do eventually. You need to do it in high school and college at least. There are also a variety of other times where study is necessary, even in your work life. For instance, many food service managers need to certify with food safety organizations and that requires testing. In any case, apps like these are helpful for doing homework or studying for a test. Here are the best study apps and homework apps for Android! Also, don’t forget the official Google Search app ! It can help with a lot of that more simple stuff.

Finally, this is a list to help you study better. We’re talking about things like flashcards and recording lectures for playback later. If you are looking for apps to teach you new things, we recommend our best learning apps for Android list here .

The best study apps for Android

Cram.com flashcards.

  • Google Drive

Google Play Books

Hi-q mp3 voice recorder, lecturenotes, socratic by google, individual topic apps.

Price: Free / $15 per 3 months / $24 per year

Brainly screenshot 2021

Brainly is a social network for people to learn things. You sign up, ask questions, and get answers (usually). Additionally, you can browse the site, answer other people’s questions, and help them out as well. It should work for most scholarly pursuits. There is also an optional subscription that puts your question higher in the queue and removes advertisements. They charge on a semester basis ($15) or a yearly basis ($24). It works for simple stuff like homework. However, more hardcore studying may require more than just this.

Cram Flashcards - best study apps and homework apps for android

Cram.com Flashcards is a decent study app. It works like you think it does. You create flashcards about whatever topic, study them, and then ace your test (hopefully). The boasts cross-platform support, offline support, various study modes for better learning, and you can create or edit flashcards in the app. The UI is nothing to write home about, but it’s easy to use at least. The free account limits the number of cards you can make. The optional subscription unlocks that limitation. This one is obviously best for study rather than homework.

Price: Free with in-app purchases

Forest screenshot 2020

Forest is a different type of app. One of the biggest distractions during study is your smartphone. Forest helps put a stop to that. You open the app and a tree grows. The tree dies if you leave the app. Thus, there is a little motivation to leave the thing alone while you study or do homework. It does let you white list apps so you can still use the phone if needed. There are other apps that also flat lock you out of your phone as well. Google put in a lot of digital wellbeing stuff starting with Android 10, but apps like this can help as well.

Google Drive suite

Price: Free (for 15GB), $1.99-$99.99 per month

Google Drive screenshot 2020

Google Drive is one of the best apps for students anyway and it works doubly well as a study app. The actual Google Drive app includes 15GB of free storage. That’s enough to store projects, notes, and other study materials for future reference on your phone or other devices. Additionally, the suite comes with Google Docs (word processing), Sheets (spreadsheets), and Slides (presentations). You can use those tools as needed for writing up notes, keeping track of data or further study, or start working on your next presentation. It’s difficult not to recommend Google Drive for basically everything.

Price: Free app, book costs vary

Google Play Books screenshot 2019 Final

Google Play Books is an excellent source of learning material. Sometimes your text book just isn’t enough and apps like this have plenty of additional resources. Books cost money, obviously. However, you only pay for them once. Books are available offline on your smartphone or tablet. Additionally, the app boasts cross-platform support. There are others like Amazon Kindle and Barnes&Noble’s Nook app, but we found Google Play Books to be the best for this particular use case. The app is completely free, only the books cost money.

Price: Free / $3.99

Hi-Q Voice Recorder screenshot for the best study apps article

Hi-Q MP3 Voice Recorder is an excellent voice recorder. It’s useful for a variety of purposes while studying. That includes recording lectures while in class, taking voice notes of your own, and practicing things like foreign language skills. The app records in MP3. That means recordings are compatible with basically any device you own for easy transferring and listening on your laptop or tablet. There isn’t too much of a difference between the free and pro version of the app. For most, the free version should do just fine.

Price: Free trial / $4.99 / Additional in-app purchases

LectureNotes is among the most popular note-taking apps for students. It’s made specifically for such a purpose. You can take all the notes you want to in a variety of ways, including handwriting if you want and sketches for things like math classes. Additionally, it has Evernote integration and a few plugins that record audio and video. The plugins cost extra and the app only has a free trial. However, there is basically nothing wrong with this one. It’s an excellent study and homework aid.

Price: Free / $19.99 per year

Quizlet is one of the most popular flashcard apps for Android. Its mostly for language learning. However, you can use it for just about any subject or topic. You can create flashcards, play memory games, and even share flashcards with classmates. It also supports 18 languages. The pro version lets you add additional media like photos along with other features. The free version should work just fine for simple uses, though. You only really need the premium version if you want ridiculously detailed flashcards and the basic ones just won’t do. Thankfully, $19.99 per year isn’t a terrible price for a study aid.

Socratic by Google screenshot 2021

Socratic is a study app for math and one of our picks for the best Android apps from 2017. It basically helps you out with math homework. You take a photo of the problem. The app uses OCR to identify the problem and show you the steps to solve it. That way you can see the answer and also see how to get there so you can learn the process. This only works for math questions and we believe there is an upper limit on how well it works. Additionally, Google purchased and re-launched the app a while ago so we have the Google version linked at the button below. It’s the one that still gets updates.

Price: Free / Varies

MCAT - best study apps for android

There are a variety of reasonably decent apps for individual topics. For example, we found decent apps that help you study for MCAT (linked), SAT (Ready4 SAT), EMT (EMT Study), and various apps for specific foreign languages and other specialized areas. We even found an app for Servsafe (food industry), although it’s not really any good. These apps take a more focused approach to the topic rather than being generally helpful like the other apps on this list. This lets you zero in on the information you need without requiring a ton of work on your part. Most of these apps are free or have free version with a premium version that usually just removes advertising.

We know that homework can be a real drag. It’s time-consuming, and can be difficult to complete all on your own. So, what can you do if you’re struggling?

You might try looking online or in the app store! If you’ve already looked around you probably know that there are tons of homework sites for students and homework apps out there that all say they can help you improve your grades and pass your classes. But, can you trust them? And what are the best apps for homework help?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help apps–free and paid . We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help apps
  • The cost of homework help apps
  • The five best apps for homework help
  • The pros and cons of using apps that help you with homework
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using apps that help you with homework
  • Tips for getting the most out of homework sites for students

So let’s jump in!

The Basics About Apps that Help You With Homework–Free and Paid

The bottom line is, homework sites and homework apps are intended to help you complete your take-home assignments successfully. They provide assistance that ranges from answering questions you submit through a portal all the way to one-on-one tutoring, depending on the help you need!

The big plus for both homework help apps and websites is that they usually offer help on-demand. So if you can’t make it to after school tutoring, or if you're studying late into the night (it happens!), you can still access the help you need!

If you’re specifically looking for an answer to the question: “what is the best homework help website ?,” you can check out our article on those here! [LINK COMING SOON]

What’s the Difference Between a Homework Help Website and an App?

So if they’re both designed to give you a little boost with your take-home assignments, what makes homework apps and websites different from one another? First off, homework help websites are optimized to be used on a desktop, while apps are designed to be run natively on mobile devices. So depending on which devices you have access to, you may decide to use a website instead of an app…or vice versa!

The other big difference between homework help apps and websites is that they sometimes offer different features. For instance, with the Photomath app, you’ll be able to submit photos of math problems instead of having to type everything out, which is easier to do by using an app on your phone.

If you’re trying to decide whether to go with a website or app, the good news is that you may not have to. Some homework help websites also have companion apps, so you can have the best of both worlds!

What Makes a Homework Help App Worth Using

Apps that help you with homework should ideally help you actually learn the material you’re struggling with, and/or help you turn in your work on time. Most of the best apps for homework help allow you to ask questions and provide answers and explanations almost immediately. And like we mentioned earlier, many of these apps let you send a picture of a question or problem instead of writing it all out.

But homework help apps offer more than just quick answers and explanations for your assignment questions. They also offer things like educational videos, lectures, tutorials, practice tests and quizzes, math solving tools, proofreading services, and even Q&A with experts.

And the best part is, most offer these services 24/7!

What You Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of apps willing to prey on desperate students. Before you download any apps (and especially before you pay to sign up for any services), read reviews of the app to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

Keep in mind: the more a company advertises help that seems like cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. Actual subject matter experts aren’t likely to work with those companies. Remember, the best apps for homework help are going to help you learn the concepts needed to successfully complete your homework on your own.

If you’re not sure if an app is legitimate, you can also check to see if the app has an honor code about using their services ethically , like this one from Brainly. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” in more detail a little later!)

How Expensive Are Apps That Help You With Homework?

A word to the wise: just because a homework help app costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. And, just because a homework help app is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best apps, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

Most of the apps out there allow you to download them for free, and provide at least some free services–such as a couple of free questions and answers. Additional services or subscriptions are then charged as in-app purchases. When it comes to in-app purchases and subscriptions for homework help, the prices vary depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to around $60 dollars per month, with the most expensive app subscriptions including some tutoring (which is usually only available through homework help websites.)

The 5 Best Apps for Homework Help

Okay, now that you’re up to speed on what these apps are and how they can help you, we’ll run you through the best five apps you can use.

Keep in mind that even though we recommend all of these apps, they tend to excel at different things. We’ve broken these apps into categories so that you can pick the best one for your needs!

Best Free Homework Help App: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

While there are lots of free homework help apps out there, this is our favorite because it actually supports learning, rather than just providing answers. The Khan Academy app works like the website, and offers the same services. It’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your educational needs.

After you download the app, you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help apps, including several AP classes.

Best Paid Homework Help App: Brainly

  • Price: $18 for a 6 month subscription, $24 for a year
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

Brainly is free to download and allows you to type in questions (or snap a pic) and get answers and explanations from both fellow students and teachers. Plus, subject matter experts and moderators verify answers daily, so you know you’re getting quality solutions! The downside is that you’re limited to two free answers per question and have to watch ads for more if you don’t pay for a subscription.

That said, their subscription fees average around only $2 per month, making this a particularly affordable option if you’re looking for homework help on a budget. Brainly subscriptions not only cover unlimited answers and explanations on a wide variety of school subjects (including Art and World Languages which aren’t always included in other apps), they also provide tutoring in Math and Physics!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best App for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or up to $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This app allows you to take a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath subscription services also include animated videos that break down mathematical concepts–all the way up to advanced Calculus!--to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic textbook solution service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools, access to one-on-one tutoring, and additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Best App for STEM and English Homework Help: Studypool

  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit
  • Best for: Science and English homework help in one app

When it comes to apps for science and English homework help, there aren’t lots of great resources out there, much less out there all in one place. While Grammarly is a good service for proofreading, SparkNotes has some decent summaries, and Khan Academy covers science, the best of the bunch if you need help with both subjects Studypool. Instead of using lots of different apps for STEM and English help, they’re combined together here! But while Studypool has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

The Studypool Q&A model is a little different than other homework help apps. After you create a free account, you ask questions, and tutors submit bids to answer them. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access thousands of notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! It’s also not clear how they choose their tutors, so you’ll need to be careful when you decide who you’d like to answer your homework questions. That said, if you only need a few questions answered per month, this could be cheaper than other monthly subscription services.

Best Homework Scheduling App: MyStudyLife

  • Best for: Keeping track of your schedule and deadlines

If the reason you’re looking for homework help is less about finding answers to questions and more about needing assistance with organization and time-management , MyStudyLife is a great option. This is a cross-platform planner that allows you to store your class schedule, upcoming tests, and homework assignments in the cloud so you can access it all wherever you are, and on any device.

One of the unique things about it is that it easily works for daily or weekly rotating class schedules that can get confusing, helping you keep track of when you need to finish your homework based on your changing schedule. You can get reminders for upcoming classes and assignments as well as past-due homework and any revisions you may need to do. It can even let you know when you need to start studying for a big test!

Best of all, you can actually schedule assignments and study sessions for multiple nights, and specify how much of the task you got done each night. That way you’ll know how much additional time you’ll need to spend!

While homework apps might seem like magic, it's important to weigh the pros and cons before you commit to one.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Apps?

Homework help apps can be useful tools if you’re struggling in any of your classes. But there are a few problems you might run into if you don’t use them ethically and responsibly.

Below we’ll cover some of the good and the not-so-good parts of using homework help apps to complete your take-home assignments.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Apps

Let’s start with the pros of using apps for homework help.

Pro 1: All-Around Better Grades

This is undeniably the main pro and the reason apps that help you with homework are so popular with students. Not only can you potentially get better grades on individual assignments, because they help you learn tricky concepts, you can also earn better grades overall .

Just keep in mind that if you want better grades you have to actually learn the material you’re studying, not just find easy answers. So be sure to use apps that provide good explanations . That way you’ll have the mental tools you need to succeed on your class exams and on standardized tests for college.

Pro 2: Flexibility

It’s hard to beat homework help that you can access anywhere you are from your mobile device. You can also get assistance whenever you need it since the best apps offer their services 24/7. This is especially useful for students who need to study during hours when their free school resources aren’t available because of extracurriculars, jobs, or family obligations.

If you need convenient and flexible homework help or tutoring services to fit your schedule, apps can be your go-to resource.

Pro 3: Individualized Learning

Sometimes the kind of learner you are doesn’t match your teacher’s style of teaching. Or maybe the pace of a class is a little too fast or too slow for your tastes. Homework apps can help by allowing you to learn at your own speed and in ways that support your own learning style.

You can use their features, such as educational videos, 24/7 conversations with experts and peers, and tutorials to review concepts you may have forgotten. These apps can also let you dive deeper into topics or subjects you enjoy! With homework help apps, you get to choose what you need to learn and how you learn it.

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Apps

Next, let’s look at the cons of homework help apps.

Con 1: Questionable Info

Unfortunately there are lots of less-than-reliable homework help apps out there. They might not hire actual experts in their fields to provide answers and create study tools, or they rely on user-submitted answers that they don’t verify. In those cases, you might not be getting the accurate, thorough, and up-to-date answers you need to really learn.

In addition to the possibility of running into plain-old wrong answers, even the best apps sometimes just won’t have a specific answer you need. This could be because you’re enrolled in an advanced class the app doesn’t really cover or because of the algorithm or chatbot a particular app uses.

If that’s the case , your best bet will likely be to talk to your teacher or a free tutor (if your school provides them) to get help answering your question.

Con 2: Information Overload

While having tons of information at your fingertips can be helpful, the sheer amount and variety of videos, tutorials, expert answers, and resources a homework app provides can be overwhelming . It’s also easy to get sucked into a research rabbit-hole where you learn new things but don’t actually get your work done. This is especially true for students who tend to be easily distracted.

Additionally, you may be learning to do things differently than you’ve learned them in class , which could cause problems. For example, if your math teacher asks you to solve a problem one way, but you learned to do it differently through an app, you could get confused come test time!

Con 3: Cutting Corners

There are a lot of apps out there that bill themselves as “the best app for cheating.” They allow users to type in a question or take a picture, then instantly provide an answer without any explanation of the material. Many of these are scams or provide unreliable answers, but not all. Some apps are legitimate and provide quick and easy answers that could allow you to do your whole homework assignment in minutes.

The problem is that even though taking shortcuts on homework to save time is tempting, it can keep you from really learning. The point of practicing concepts and skills is so you develop them and can access them whenever you need to. This is especially true if skills build on one another, like in a math or English class.

Sometimes s truggling with an assignment or question, trying, failing, then trying again until you succeed can help you learn difficult material. If you don’t let yourself really try, and instead take too many shortcuts, you may end up behind.

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

When it comes to using homework help apps, sometimes the difference between “help” and “cheating” is really clear. For example, if you’re using an app to get answers while you’re taking a test, that’s definitely cheating . But what if you’re struggling with a math problem and need to know the correct answer so you can work backwards to learn the process? Is that “cheating” or is it “help?”

The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” If you’re not sure, you can always check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if you’re relying on an app to do all of the work for you, there’s a good chance using it might constitute cheating.

Think of it this way: say you’re studying for an upcoming math test, and are stumped by a few of the questions on the study guide. Even though you’ve tried and tried, you can’t seem to get the right answer because you can’t remember the steps to take. Using an app to explain the steps as you’re studying is “help.” Using the app to get answers so you can make a good homework grade is “cheating.”

The same is true for other subjects: brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also “help,” provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or learning to produce your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help App for You

If you’re serious about using a homework help app, our expert tips can help you pick one that’s right for you and your budget!

#1: Decide What Tools You Need to Succeed

While most apps offer Q&A services, the best apps provide study tools to help you learn the material you need to learn .

For instance, if you’re a visual learner, you might need an app that provides lots of videos. If you learn best by reading, an app that provides lots of in-depth written resources might be better for you. Or, if you learn best by actually doing things, look for an app that provides practice tests and quizzes, along with explanations for correct and incorrect answers.

Before committing to an app, take a quick survey of the tools they offer users to make sure they meet your unique learning needs.

#2: Decide Which Subjects You Need to Study

Not all homework apps are created equal. One might provide tutoring in math and science, but no proofreading services to help you with writing. Another might be perfect for American History, but what you really need help with is your Spanish class. So, before you can decide which app is best for you, make sure to create a list of the subjects you need the most help in.

#3: Do Your Research

As we’ve said before, there are tons of homework apps in the app store to choose from, and the most important thing you can do is research what they offer students. Services, prices for those services, and subjects that the apps cover all vary, so it’s important that you look into your options. We’ve compiled our all-around favorite (and reliable) apps here, but it’s still a good idea to do your own research to find out what might meet your individual needs best.

body-five-star-best-number-one

#4: Learn Why People Like and Dislike the App

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase “buyer beware?” It means that the person buying something should check for quality before actually handing over their money. This applies to both free and paid homework apps, but especially those that actually cost money.

Before you download anything, be sure to read the user reviews . While all apps will have both positive and negative reviews, you want to look for one that has more positive than negative. And if you’re considering paying for a service, be sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

#5: Budget Yourself

If you find a paid app that provides the learning tools you need, covers the subjects you need to study, and that has good reviews overall, set a budget to pay for it before you hit that “install” button. The costs for paid homework apps vary, and especially if you’re using one that requires you to pay for individual questions or services, the prices can add up quickly. So make sure there’s money for it in your budget before you commit!

Mathematics can be one of the most challenging courses for students, with complicated steps that are quickly forgotten after a long school day. Especially challenging is that many parents struggle to help their children with subject matter that they haven't been acquainted with for years. Photomath is an excellent solution for struggling mathematicians.

So, if your child is trying to learn a musical instrument and struggling, consider investing in Yousician. This app allows students to practice guitar, bass, piano, or ukulele.

Students can practice their instruments along with the charts and diagrams that display on the screen. They'll receive real-time feedback when they miss a note or fall out of tune. Included step-by-step video tutorials are available to show your child how to be proficient in a specific skill set. Practicing an instrument has never seemed so natural. With different genres of music available, your child can quickly sort out their favorites.

Homework Planner Apps for Students

1. student planner- homework agenda & notes.

The first app on the list is a simple homework and notes management app. It keeps track of homework, assignments, projects, and to-do lists. The layout is minimal, all the tasks are neatly organized with a colored bookmark for easy identification. You can mark a task complete and remove it from the pending list.

Courses can be added easily and color-coded as well. The calendar shows any upcoming deadlines so you can prioritize accordingly. The tasks have a progress bar that you can adjust as you make progress which enables you to get a quick summary without actually opening every task.

You can also break your assignments in small chunks as subtasks that would make finishing a task much easier and the progress bar will fill automatically. It also allows you to attach media files to your assignments or projects for easy access to the important information in one place.

  • Progress bar
  • Deadline Reminders

2. Student Planner

Student Planner is another fast and simple homework management app which is wrapped by a beautiful and intuitive material designed UI. What Student Planner adds to the table is the inclusion of a schedule or time table which you can use to either store your class schedule or it might even be a study schedule for your exams.

You first start by adding your subject and the schedule then you can add an assignment or set a reminder. The due assignments are arranged as separate cards and can be swiped away once done with.

homework planner apps- Student Planner Android

  •  Simple and easy to get started with
  •  Fast and small in size
  •  Beautiful Minimal UI
  •  Option for Schedule
  • No sync/backup
  • Timetable implementation not perfect

I would recommend this app to anyone who is looking for a simple homework management app with timetable support and a minimal UI.

Install Student Planner ( Android )

Egenda is simple. Open the app, add all the classes or subjects to the app, and once that is set up, you have the option of adding a new Homework, Quiz, Project, or Test and choose the respective subject deadlines. The app also arranges the due work in cards that can be swiped away when done. But what I love the most about this app is that the fact it allows you to go subject-wise and view all your upcoming tests, projects, or pending assignments which is a huge convenience for planning your schedule ahead of time instead of the previous day.

Unfortunately, the app doesn’t have a timetable option, but in its latest update, it added a  Calendar View  where you can see your whole month at a glance with your assignments, tests, and projects.

homework planner apps- Egenda Android

  •  Subject-wise sorting
  •  Calendar View
  • No timetable support

Egenda provides some great tools for Homework and Test planning and I am sure anyone would find them extremely convenient and useful. But keeping its single con in mind, go for this app if you are not too keen on having a schedule or timetable.

Install  Egenda  ( Android  |  iOS )

4. ChalkBoard

The next app on our list is ChalkBoard, which I found out to be a pretty smart homework planner app. Chalkboard strikes a perfect balance between simplicity and features.

Although the setup process is a little longer than the previous three apps, as you have to feed meticulous details about the classes, teacher, and schedule. It is worth the effort.

On the home screen, you are shown upcoming classes, events tab, and upcoming tests. ChalkBoard fetches the dates for every subject from the Timetable for your future classes. Little features like these make the app stand out from the rest and give an overall great experience. You can also view classes and assignments subject wise.

  • The best tablets in 2024: top 11 tablets you can buy now
  • The 6 best tablets for kids in 2024
  • 10 iPhone productivity apps you need to download right now

Looking for apps that are a little more specialized? We’ve also got a list of the best apps for teachers and educators on iOS and Android.

Apps for learning

Looking to learn something new? Here’s where you’ll find the apps to make that happen.

The Great Courses (free/in-app purchases)

College is a great place to get an education, but if the thought of doing homework or racking up a hefty sum of student debt doesn’t appeal to you, The Great Courses offers lectures from expert professors, covering a wide variety of subjects including literature, history, business, math, music, and even cooking. The Great Courses app lets you download or stream courses, and is compatible with Chromecast. The lectures are professionally made and presented clearly, with visual aids when necessary. While the app itself is free, you’ll have to pay for individual courses. There is a free trial, though, and courses go on sale from time to time. Plus, your smartphone probably weighs a lot less than a textbook.

iOS Android

Learning another language is rarely easy, but Duolingo’s free app makes it a lot easier. Duolingo has over 30 languages to choose from, and it offers fun lessons designed like mino-games. It’ll give you a poke every day to remind you, and each lesson takes just 5 minutes on average. 5 minutes a day in exchange for learning a whole new language? That’s a real deal. It’s completely free to use, though you can spend money to repair a learning streak if you accidentally took a day off, or to restore your in-game health.

 Brainscape (free/subscription)

Brainscape claims you can double your learning speed by using flashcards. Brainscape paces the repetition of each concept perfectly, so you retain knowledge more effectively. Rate how well you know each concept and Brainscape will determine the right time to give you another quiz. It’s free to create, share, and find user-generated flashcards. Pro subscription is billed at $10 per month, $42 every six months, or $60 per year. If you’re dedicated enough and are happy you’ll stick with it for a long time, a lifetime subscription costs $120 — at least two year’s worth. Subscriptions give you access to unlimited premium content, features like bookmarks, browse mode, card reversibility, and allow you to create flashcards without ads.

Ready4 SAT (free/$20 premium upgrade)

Ready4’s series of test prep apps, like Ready4 SAT, goes well beyond just drilling you to answer practice questions. It actually aims to teach you the material and test-taking tips in mobile-friendly chunks, so that you can study whenever and wherever you have your smartphone. This free app even tries to match your potential SAT score with schools and academic programs around the world, just in case you need extra motivation to study. Only a few lessons are free though, and you’ll need to pay $20 for the premium version to unlock the rest.

For high-school students who just need a bit more guidance on how to isolate “x” in their algebra homework, Photomath is essentially your math buddy that can instantly solve and explain every answer. Simply snap a photo of the question (you can also write or type), and the app will break down the solution into separate steps with helpful play-by-play so that you can apply the same principles to the rest of your homework. It’s completely free, and works without Wi-Fi.

Memrise (free/subscription)

While you could buy yourself a textbook and teach yourself a new language, Memrise offers a different path, teaching you vocabulary through real world use. Boot up Memrise, choose a language you want to study, and real native speakers will teach you their language from the streets of their home country. Memrise is available for free, although the free version only offers so much; for the full deal, you’ll need to purchase a premium subscription. Memrise Pro starts from $9 a month, but there are a number of longer plans to reduce the price per month, and even a lifetime subscription for $120.

DoodleMath: Elementary Math

Satisfying all Common Core Standards criteria for kindergarten to 6th grade math, DoodleMath is one of the best educational apps out there for younger math students. It creates a personalized math program that’s suited to the ability of each user, with the app’s gamified rewards ensuring that children remain motivated to continue learning. While the app is based on research conducted by educational professionals and is therefore pretty rigorous, it’s designed to be used for just 10 minutes a day, so it certainly won’t overwhelm your children. The app also offers a dashboard for parents, so that you can monitor how your kids are progressing. There’s also a version tailored to the UK’s national curriculum, so it’s not just for American kids.

edX (free/in-app purchases)

Higher education is no longer exclusive to college students or contained within Ivory Towers. EdX makes it possible for anyone with a smartphone to learn from distinguished institutions such as MIT and McGill, and maybe even earn a certificate while you’re at it. You can tune into online lectures, take quizzes, and complete assignments at your own pace, all without having to worry about getting a student loan (though some certificates and courses do cost extra).

Periodic Table

More than just another interactive periodic table, this Periodic Table app from the Royal Society of Chemistry incorporates everything from podcasts to videos to help you learn about the elements. Don’t worry about being overwhelmed by all the information though, as the app showcases different levels of data to satisfy everyone, from a novice to an AP Chemistry student.

It’s rare that an organization truly makes you think. The TED app lets you peruse more the entire library of more than 1,700 TED Talks videos, introducing you to intriguing presentations and revolutionary ideas from education radicals, tech geniuses, business gurus, musical legends, and the like.

Khan Academy

Education can be expensive. Fortunately, Khan Academy provides more than 4,000, free downloadable videos, so you can brush up on everything from K-12 math and earth science to art history and computer science. You can also track your progress and unlock basic achievements.

Star Walk 2 ($3/in-app purchases)

As an augmented-reality app of sorts, Star Walk 2 is an elegantly designed mobile stargazing app of the highest quality. The app follows your device’s movements in real-time, offering views and providing info on more than 200,000 stars, constellations, and other celestial bodies. Not sure if that pinprick of light is a star or planet? Star Walk 2 can help you find out. Moreover, the app possesses a remarkable calendar of celestial events and lets you view the night sky during different time intervals. It does have further microtransactions outside of the initial purchase though, and the content packs offer 3D models and information on a range of other elements of the night sky, including comets and distant galaxies.

Learning support apps

While these apps don’t educate you directly, they are exceptionally useful for making sure you keep up with your education. You’ll find great apps for note-taking, reminders, and scheduling here.

My Study Life

School life is complicated. To help you stay on top of your schedule and often conflicting deadlines, My Study Life is more than just a day planner and school calendar — the app even sends reminders to your mobile device whenever you have upcoming deadlines. As one of the few ad-free agenda apps on the market, My Study Life’s colorful interface gives you all the info you need regarding your day at a glance.

Most students don’t have a personal editor to show them how they can improve their writing, one sentence at a time. GradeProof’s AI offers concrete ways to improve your style, check for originality, as well as identify complex grammatical issues that other word processors often miss. While the app itself is free, you’ll need to upgrade to the $10 per month GradeProof Premium to unleash the full power of this pocket writing coach with an advanced grammar, eloquence, and plagiarism checker.

To Do Reminder with Alarm

You can think of the aptly titled To Do Reminder with Alarm as a robust alarm clock, one that functions without an account or internet connection. With the app, you can set helpful reminders that can be customized according to your preferences, enabling you to choose notifications or alarms, as well as letting you set the alarm sounds you use. It also syncs dates (e.g. birthdays) from your various apps and social media accounts, so it’s really a great go-to app for all your reminder needs.

If you already use Mendeley Desktop to manage your research citations and collaborate with classmates, then the Mendeley app is a no-brainer. After all, the app is a PDF reader that lets you annotate and search across the journal articles you need for your paper or your class readings, directly on your mobile device. Once you’re back at your computer, the app will also sync your mobile notes to keep you organized.

We’ve touted Evernote more than once. The free productivity app gives you the tools for taking photos, crafting notes, creating to-do lists, and recording voice reminders, all of which you can tag for additional organization. The app even syncs content across multiple devices — though you can only have two devices for free.

Microsoft OneNote

Now that Evernote is charging users who want to use its app on more than two devices, Microsoft’s OneNote is looking like a decent alternative for your mobile note-taking needs. It helps that the app is usually pre-loaded on new Windows 10 devices, and works across all platforms. Not only can you record a lecture and snap photos while “handwriting” your notes with a stylus or pen, but you can back up your class notes to OneDrive and Office 365.

Notability ($10)

The iCloud-abetted Notability lets you take notes in a variety of forms. With Notability, you can sketch ideas, annotate uploaded documents, sign contracts, and complete worksheets in addition to other actions. You can also format documents, using the app’s advance word processor.

Quizlet is an incredibly helpful app that transforms the simple into useful. The app’s whole goal is to use flashcards. Before you roll your eyes and claim that the studying method is outdated, hear us out. The updated platform uses a combination of text, images, and audio. Whether you’re cramming for an upcoming exam or you want to develop a study guide for the full semester or year, this app is a great tool. You can also use the interactive platform to collaborate with your peers, discuss tests, assignments, and share feedback.

It’s hard to get by in school without studying; many would say it’s the foundation of education. Similar to Quizlet, StudyBlue also uses flashcards as well as study guides and quizzes. You can also see flashcards made by other students, which can offer an assortment of resources that grows as more and more people join the platform. StudyBlue brings fun to the learning process by providing you with a score after finishing each set of flashcards. This way, you’re encouraged to improve each time.

WolframAlpha ($3)

Queried by Apple’s Siri, WolframAlpha uses a wide range of algorithms and data to answer all your burning questions. And it doesn’t matter what your question is about; it’ll answer anything. This particular app uses reliable sources to give you the most accurate, thoroughly-researched answers that you’ll find anywhere. We love WolframAlpha because it’s an app that explains how it came to a solution.

5 Of The Best Note-Taking Apps For Android In 2024

G one are the days when carrying around a pad and a pencil for notes is considered the norm. With the rectangular glass and metal slabs in our pockets getting increasingly more competent at undertaking everyday tasks, it is much simpler to pull your phone out and start typing. Most manufacturers equip devices with a preloaded notes app, and while those aren't unusable, you could be doing a lot better.

Certain smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra have a dedicated stylus and well-engineered software. It is worth exploring first-party features since they work at a system level and are better integrated with the other apps on your phone. For the remaining majority of Android folks, the Play Store is home to countless notepad apps.

The best of these apps include a rich-text editor that can give your notes a glow up, and various other utilitiarian features like cloud backup and the ability to attach images. From jotting down quick reminders to journaling paragraphs, here are some of the best note-taking apps for Android that you should check out in 2024.

It isn't every day that an app by a solo developer gets recommended at the top of a list, but this one has truly earned it. Noto is a minimalistic note-taking app that departs from the professional-looking design languages most other apps in this category opt for. You can archive old notes, import or export data from previous backups, and filter or sort notes for a better view.

Apart from the essentials that every notepad app offers like labeling your notes, creating folders, and adding reminders, Noto takes it a bit further with a few specifics. Heading into the app's settings menu reveals options to change the app icon and font, and the ability to change the default screen when you launch the app. You can lock your notes behind a passcode, which cannot be reset if you ever forget the combination of digits. If you have lengthy writeups saved, you can ask the app to remember the last scrolling position to make it simpler for you to jump back in.

There's a dedicated reading mode that does away with all distractions, sets a specified brightness level, and goes into full-screen mode. To add the cherry on top, Noto is completely free and devoid of any ads, with its source code being available on GitHub as well. Pairing the unique customizability options with the otherwise straightforward approach of the app, Noto is a great way to jot down notes and organize them in categories.

Notebook By Zoho

When it comes to productivity apps, Zoho makes some of the most collaborative tools  — with its spreadsheet application, for example, being one of the best Microsoft Excel alternatives that you can use. The brand's deliverance in intuitive features extends to Android devices as well. Notebook is a simple and efficient way to create and organize your notes. You can access your data on other platforms as well, including iOS, macOS, or on any device through the online web app.

You can combine notes of similar meaning into notebooks, which is how this app handles categories. If you use Zoho's other products, you can enjoy seamless integration across platforms. The app also features a fun gestural navigation system, where you can swipe on your notes to view additional information, pinch a few notes to form a stack, and condense them while in landscape view to resemble a bookshelf.

Where this note-taking app shines though, are the widgets that you can pin to your launcher. Zoho's Notebook app was featured as one of Play Store's best apps in 2017 and has since received several improvements in design and functionality. The slew of editing and sorting features paired with the minimal yet powerful home screen widgets are reasons to want to use this app.

Obsidian handles note-taking very differently than most other apps  —  it strips away all distractions and puts the experience of jotting down your ideas front and center. The app also bypasses annoying text formatting issues by opting in for Markdown language instead. While you need to get used to extra keystrokes for, say, bolding a word, or slanting a phrase  — it eventually increases your output and avoids distraction. The app does give you quick shortcuts to perform text formatting as well.

On Android, you are required to create a "vault", which is essentially a folder in fancy terms. Any notes that you create in a vault are Markdown files, which can be accessed using any text editor on any platform. Where Obsidian excels is in its support for extensions. You can choose from over a thousand add-ons from Obsidian's website to supercharge your note-taking experience. Some of these support very niche use cases, like being able to link to the current track you're listening to on Spotify.

The only downside of Obsidian is the fact that it isn't the easiest of interfaces for beginners. The inclusion of a cloud storage system is nifty, but keep in mind that it is locked behind a paywall. Even though Obsidian's subscription costs creep up in comparison to other note-taking apps, its free version offers a slightly greater number of essentials.

Looking for something a bit more casual but nonetheless rewarding? ColorNote  brings a traditional and straightforward approach to how an app handles note-taking. The sticky notes-inspired layout and the largely clutter-free experience give it an edge over the dozens of similar apps that often bury the core fundamentals of writing down notes.

You can create a text-based note, or use a checklist format for every new piece you create. Every note comes with the ability to add a reminder, which is synced with the app's built-in calendar to display an agenda view and you can lock and sync notes once you've connected to either Google or Facebook. Checklist-based notes are easy and no-nonsense to create and their items can be shuffled in any order with a simple swipe.

Before saving your note, you can choose between nine vibrant colors, resembling the likes of a physical Post-it note. The app lets you sort notes based on color, so you can potentially have up to nine informal categories to dump your ideas into. We also found the widgets of ColorNote to be the most minimal looking, though it comes at the expense of looking a tad bit outdated. Regardless, the app's blunt yet functional nature is what makes it a strong contender for those looking to save their write-ups quickly.

BlackNote is an app best described with as few words as possible  — because there's not much to it other than it being a dark-themed barebones note-taking service. This is also what makes it a joy to use, though. It's very similar in functionality to the ColorNote app, might we dare say that it could even be heavily inspired by its layout? You can create a regular note, or add checkboxes to make it a list.

The text editor is extremely minimal and only features two icons to change the font size and a save button at the very bottom. You can search for characters within a saved note, lock it, get rid of it, or star it into your favorites collection, which has a tab of its own. There is a dedicated section to add daily to-do items, as well as an omnipresent shopping list, saving you from the hassle of creating duplicate notes that fulfill the same purpose.

You can filter notes based on their title or the date they were created or last modified. That's quite literally everything the app can do  — you'd be hard-pressed to find any other functionality within. This is great because your saved notes are the only thing in focus when using the app. BlackNote has over five million installs on the Play Store with an overwhelming amount of positive reviews, proving that sometimes, less is more.
