Although some manufacturers have moved operations completely offshore, others are retaining a few production facilities in the United States to manufacture products requiring a quick turnaround time.

While manufacturing in Asia remains substantial, the growth of apparel manufacturing in Mexico and the Caribbean has been significant due to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the lowering of tariffs. Apparel assembled in Mexico and the Caribbean nations from fabric formed and cut in the United States accounted for 27% of all apparel imports in 1998, up from 9% in 1990.

With an improved economic outlook, Asian currencies have strengthened against the U.S. dollar over the past year. For example, the Thai bhat and Korean won appreciated 13% and 20%, respectively, from June 2013 to June 2014. While this has benefited U.S. exports somewhat, it has put pricing pressures on imported Asian goods. For the vast amount of goods manufactured in China, however, no such benefit is currently expected, as this country’s currency has remained fixed in value versus the U.S. dollar.

Leaner inventories, but continued pricing pressures

After several years of inventory build-ups, the apparel industry’s inventory-to-sales ratio declined steeply in 2008, and through 2010 it remained near its lowest levels in 16 years. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the inventory-to-sales ratio was 1.49 as of May 2016, significantly below the 1.74 of a year earlier.

After several difficult years and many bankruptcies in the early 2010s, the apparel industry is relatively healthier overall, and its lower inventory levels are a sign of that. Despite the lean inventories, however, prices of women’s apparel declined in the first 6 months of 2015, compared with year-earlier levels, after rising slightly in 1998. S&P’s still expects some degree of apparel pricing pressure to persist in the near future. Intensifying competition doesn’t bode well for apparel manufacturers’ ability to raise prices. Companies are continually searching around the globe for cheaper sourcing and are looking for ways to cut operating costs. Consumers are also very value conscious-they want quality merchandise at the lowest possible price. This trend is evident in the successful growth of off-price retail stores.

Modest growth in ’16

As with most mature industries, the apparel and footwear industries are experiencing intense competition and pricing pressures, while facing the need for constant product innovation. However, these industries are enjoying a great economic cycle, with low interest rates, low unemployment, strong consumer confidence, and a low savings rate. Consumers are continuing to spend at a healthy clip. As a result, S&Ps expects sales for the apparel industry to rise about 4% in 2016. We believe that maker’s with strong brand recognition and those that are closely in tune with consumers’ needs will enjoy average growth. The footwear industry faces a tougher environment, however, considering the still-high inventory levels and low-margin price points.

Although S&P’s doesn’t expect the economy and consumer spending to sustain growth forever, we expect the overall apparel industry to continue to post-modest gains through 2016. Among apparel makers, we expect the best performances to come from companies with strong brand recognition, such as Tommy Hilfiger Inc., Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Jones Apparel Group Inc. As more and more companies have adopted casual attire in the workplace, the trend toward casual dressing continues. This has sustained the need for men and women to establish new wardrobes or alter their existing ones. S&P’s believes this has had more of an effect in the men’s segment, as evidenced by the higher growth rate in sales of that segment in the past year. Eventually, the casual trend will slow to a level of demand that satisfies basic replenishment needs, but for now we expect heightened consumer confidence to encourage spending beyond basic needs. Current career offerings have less structured looks, and consumers have favorably received these.

S&P’s expects the branded apparel companies that sell to the department store channel of distribution to grow somewhat faster than the overall industry. In addition to favorable demographic trends, this segment is benefiting from its strength in design and marketing, which has led to a high consumer awareness of and demand for branded apparel. Nonetheless, because there’s little pent-up demand for apparel, the need for freshness is still a vital part of keeping customers interested.

In response to a challenging and saturated domestic market with slower growth prospects, S&P’s expects that companies with strong brands will increasingly turn to international markets for growth. Companies are hoping that the international consumer’s interest in the U.S. lifestyle will translate into sales of brands that represent that lifestyle. Many companies as a significant growth area see Europe, and Asia appears to be recovering from the economic turmoil experienced in the past couple of years.

Apparel companies have been quick to recognize the importance of the youth market and have started to establish product lines to target this group. Generation Y–those individuals between four and 21 years of age–is a large demographic group with considerable spending power. This group is also significant in setting styles and trends that influence the styles for older consumers.

The current environment of abundant supply, consolidation, and intense competition has forced companies to maximize profits, not only for growth but for survival as well. Companies are constantly searching for ways to maximize efficiencies, cut costs, and increase sales. S&P’s believes this improved condition of apparel companies has positioned the successful ones for a greater degree of growth and should serve to develop a healthier industry.

In the past, consumers purchased apparel and footwear for the upcoming season when retail stores decided it was best to carry the merchandise, usually months in advance. Times are changing, however, consumers are buying apparel and footwear closer to or during the season. The industry has had to adjust to this trend, or risk losing sales and carrying unwanted inventory. Companies have had to shorten design, development, production, and distribution cycles.

In order to stay in tune with consumer needs and trends and to aid in product planning, companies have established internal teams or have hired firms to gather feedback from relevant consumer groups. For example, Tommy Hilfiger recently established what it calls Quick Response Capsules (QRC), teams of designers and production staff to work in collaboration with retail stores to bring out fresh, new fashions within a month. When Nike recently reorganized its apparel division, it created a strategic response division to monitor consumer trends. Other companies are doing this as well.

At the moment, a few apparel companies are using domestic plants to fulfill small orders for fresh products. Although indications now are that most merchandise will continue to be sources offshore, some seasonal/special items may need to be produced domestically. Signs of turmoil at Tesla multiplied on Monday after the electric car company told employees it would lay off more than 10 percent of the work force to cut costs and two senior executives resigned.

The job cuts, amounting to about 14,000 people, come as the company faces increasing competition and declining sales. The management changes and layoffs are a reminder of the unpredictability of Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive, at a critical time for the company.

Mr. Musk has not outlined a plan to reverse a decline in car sales, and he appears focused on long-shot ventures such as a self-driving taxi, rather than new models that would help Tesla compete with cars being introduced by established carmakers and new rivals from China.

“As we prepare the company for the next phase of growth, it is extremely important to look at every aspect of the company for cost reductions and increasing productivity,” Mr. Musk told employees in a Monday morning email, a copy of which was reviewed by The New York Times.

“There is nothing I hate more, but it must be done,” he wrote.

Hours after that email, Drew Baglino, a senior vice president who has played a big role in the company’s rise from start-up to dominant electric car maker, said he had resigned.

“I made the difficult decision to move on from Tesla after 18 years yesterday,” Mr. Baglino said in a post on X, the social media site. Mr. Baglino is one of only three managers besides Mr. Musk listed as a top executive on the company’s website . His longevity was unusual at a company known for high management turnover.

Mr. Baglino may have been blamed for some of Tesla’s recent troubles, said Gary Black, managing partner of the Future Fund, an investment firm. “Someone has to take the fall for the sharp deceleration in deliveries growth, near record inventories, and declining margins and it wasn’t going to be Elon,” Mr. Black said on X.

Tesla also appeared to be losing an executive key to winning regulatory approval for self-driving technology. Rohan Patel, a former aide to President Barack Obama who was Tesla’s head of policy and business development, tacitly confirmed reports that he was leaving. In a post on X, Mr. Patel thanked his co-workers and Mr. Musk for “the past eight years at Tesla.”

“My plans are to be a recess monitor for my second grade daughter, practice my violin, go to a bunch of bucket list sporting events and take my very patient wife on some long intended travel,” Mr. Patel said.

Investors often welcome job cuts because they can lead to higher profits. But that was not the case Monday, with Tesla shares ending the day down more than 5 percent.

Tesla regularly culls its work force to remove employees whose performance managers consider weak, but the numbers are typically smaller. “This is something Elon and Tesla have consistently done throughout his career,” said Scott Acheychek, chief executive of REX Shares, which offers funds investors use to bet on or against Tesla’s stock. “Ten percent is pretty big,” Mr. Acheychek added.

Mr. Musk’s email to employees was earlier reported by Electrek, an online news site, and Handelsblatt, a German business newspaper.

Mr. Musk did not indicate where the cuts would be made. Many of Tesla’s workers are based at four large car factories in Fremont, Calif., Austin, Texas, and Shanghai and near Berlin. Tesla also has a factory in Buffalo that produces charging equipment and a factory near Reno, Nev., that makes batteries.

The layoffs may help the United Automobile Workers union’s efforts to organize Tesla employees in the United States. The company’s workers may be more open to the union if they believe that representation would give them greater job security. Workers at a Volkswagen factory in Tennessee will vote this week on joining the U.A.W., and Mercedes-Benz workers in Alabama will vote next month.

Mr. Musk’s many other ventures, and his penchant for making polarizing political statements, have raised questions about his focus on managing Tesla. Wall Street is increasingly concerned about the company: Tesla’s share price has lost about one-third of its value this year.

Many investors had expressed hope that Tesla would revive flagging sales by introducing a car that would sell for about $25,000 as early as next year, increasing the number of people who could afford the company’s cars and responding to competition from Chinese companies that are already selling electric cars for as little as half that price tag.

Mr. Musk cast doubt on those plans by announcing this month that Tesla would unveil a Robotaxi in August. The self-driving taxi is seen as a long shot, in part because even the most advanced systems available today sometimes make glaring mistakes. In addition, federal and state regulators will have to sign off before Tesla can put such taxis on the road.

This month, Tesla reported a decline in sales that caught investors off guard . The company said it delivered 387,000 cars worldwide in the first quarter, down 8.5 percent from the year before. It was the first time Tesla’s quarterly sales had fallen on a year over year basis since the start of the pandemic in 2020.

The company slashed prices significantly over the course of 2023 to increase demand, which has reduced the profit Tesla makes on each car. Last week, Tesla reduced the price of its most advanced driver-assistance software to $99 a month from $199. But price cuts appear to be losing their effectiveness. Tesla will announce its financial results for the first quarter on April 23.

Rivals like BYD of China, BMW of Germany, and Kia and Hyundai Motor of South Korea reported increases in electric vehicle sales for the same period, suggesting that slower overall demand for battery-powered models was not the only explanation for Tesla’s problems.

Established companies are closing the gap with Tesla on battery technology, and have been building new assembly lines to achieve the cost savings made possible by mass production. Honda plans to begin producing electric vehicles at a factory in Marysville, Ohio, next year.

Hyundai will begin producing electric cars at a new factory in Georgia in October, José Muñoz, the president and global chief operating officer of Hyundai Motor, said in an interview last month. Hyundai will also begin allowing customers to buy cars on Amazon, an answer to Tesla’s practice of selling cars online.

Mr. Muñoz said that customers had been willing to pay more for Hyundai electric cars than they would for comparable Teslas. “At the beginning, Tesla was premium,” he said. “Now we’re premium .”

From the above analysis we would need the sum of $428,500 to be able to set up and successfully run a standard school uniform sewing business here in Houston – Texas. It should be noted that the amount in question will cover the leasing of a facility for a period of 4 years including renovations that would be carried out on the facility.

The amount also includes the purchase of a delivery van, raw materials and sewing machines, and also the payment of employees’ salaries and utility bills for a period of six months.

We approached the bank for the sum of $285,000 that will be repaid in 10 years at the rate of 5% per annum. All the approving documents have been duly signed and approved and we have been told that the amount will be credited to our business account before the end of the work week.

G&L School Uniforms and More Inc is a business owned by two friends Ms Gloria Dutch and Mr. Lance Germaine. The two friends have decided that they do not want any external investors and are therefore willing to generate their start-up capital from other sources.

Therefore the areas where we intend to generate our start-up capital are;

  • Generate part of the start-up capital from personal savings
  • Source for soft loans from wealthy friends and family members
  • Apply for loan from the bank

N.B : It should be noted that we were able to generate the sum of $100,000 from our personal savings. We got the sum of $100,000 as soft loans from our family members and friends.

The future of our school uniform sewing business depends largely on what measures we take to ensure that our business is not only sustained but expands as well according to our pace. Therefore the factors that we will consider in the sustainability of our business are; incorporating excellent customer care, offering of diverse services and also building a solid business structure.

Building a solid business structure is a must for us and we therefore intend to go the extra mile to ensure that we hire only professionals (tailors, marketers, designers) to help ensure that we attain all our goals and objectives.

Because we intend to ensure that our employees remain relevant, we will keep tabs on the industry and ensure that the skills of our employees are enhanced when necessary by allowing them attend trainings and seminars, as this will also boost productivity for our business as well.

We will make sure that our employees are adequately paid and that their welfare and incentive package is better than what start-ups such as ours are offering their own employees.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — Employees at a Volkswagen factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, overwhelmingly voted to join the United Auto Workers union Friday in a historic first test of the UAW’s renewed effort to organize nonunion factories.

The union wound up getting 2,628 votes, or 73% of the ballots cast, compared with only 985 who voted no in an election run by the National Labor Relations Board.

Both sides have five business days to file objections to the election, the NLRB said. If there are none, the election will be certified and VW and the union must “begin bargaining in good faith.”

President Joe Biden, who backed the UAW and won its endorsement, said the union’s win follows major union gains across the country including actors, port workers, Teamsters members, writers and health care workers.

“Together, these union wins have helped raise wages and demonstrate once again that the middle-class built America and that unions are still building and expanding the middle class for all workers,” he said in a statement late Friday.

Twice in recent years, workers at the Chattanooga plant have rejected union membership in plantwide votes. Most recently, they handed the UAW a narrow defeat in 2019 as federal prosecutors were breaking up a bribery-and-embezzlement scandal at the union.

But this time, they voted convincingly for the UAW, which is operating under new leadership directly elected by members for the first time and basking in a successful confrontation with Detroit’s major automakers.

The union’s pugnacious new president, Shawn Fain , was elected on a platform of cleaning up after the scandal and turning more confrontational with automakers. An emboldened Fain, backed by Biden, led the union in a series of strikes last fall against Detroit’s automakers that resulted in lucrative new contracts .

The new contracts raised union wages by a substantial one-third, arming Fain and his organizers with enticing new offers to present to workers at Volkswagen and other companies.

Next up for a union vote are workers at Mercedes factories near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, who will vote on UAW representation in May.

Fain said he was not surprised by the size of the union’s win Friday after the two previous losses.

“I think it’s the reality of where we are and the times that we’re in,” he said Friday night. “Workers are fed up in being left behind.”

The win, he said, will help the growing unionization effort in the rest of the country.

“This gives workers everywhere else the indication that it’s OK,” Fain said. “All we’ve heard for years is we can’t win here, you can’t do this in the South, and you can.”

Worker Vicky Holloway of Chattanooga was among dozens of cheering workers celebrating at an electrical workers union hall near the VW plant. She said the overwhelming vote for the union came this time because her colleagues realized they could have better benefits and a voice in the workplace.

“Right now we have no say,” said Holloway, who has worked at the plant for 13 years and was there for the union’s previous losses. “It’s like our opinions don’t matter.”

In a statement, Volkswagen thanked workers for voting and said 83.5% of the 4,300 production workers cast ballots in the election.

Six Southern governors, including Tennessee’s Bill Lee, warned the workers in a joint statement this week that joining the UAW could cost them their jobs and threaten the region’s economic progress.

But the overwhelming win is a warning to nonunion manufacturers, said Marick Masters, a business professor at Wayne State University in Detroit who studies the union.

“This is going to send a powerful message to all of those companies that the UAW is knocking at the door, and if they want to remain nonunion, they’ve got to step up their game,” Masters said.

He expects other nonunion automakers to become more aggressive at the plants, and that anti-union politicians will step up their efforts to fight the union.

Shortly after the Detroit contracts were ratified, Volkswagen and other nonunion companies handed their workers big pay raises.

Last fall, Volkswagen raised production worker pay by 11%, lifting top base wages to $32.40 per hour, or just over $67,000 per year. VW said its pay exceeds the median household income for the Chattanooga area, which was $54,480 last May, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

But under the UAW contracts, top production workers at GM, for instance, now earn $36 an hour, or about $75,000 a year excluding benefits and profit sharing. By the end of the contract in 2028, top-scale GM workers would make over $89,000.

The VW plant will be the first the UAW has represented at a foreign-owned automaking plant in the South. It will not, however, be the first union auto assembly plant in the South. The UAW represents workers at two Ford assembly plants in Kentucky and two GM factories in Tennessee and Texas, as well as some heavy-truck manufacturing plants.

Also, more than three decades ago, the UAW was at a Volkswagen factory in New Stanton, Pennsylvania, east of Pittsburgh. VW closed the plant that made small cars in the late 1980s.

Reliance Industries among companies that submitted bid for battery manufacturing gigafactory

Reliance Industries, JSW Neo Energy and Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies are among seven companies to have submitted bids to set up a battery manufacturing gigafactory in India, as per the government.

As mentioned in a report in Reuters, the companies have submitted bids to set up manufacturing plants for advanced chemistry cells with a total capacity of 10GWh. These will be in line with the government’s production-linked incentive scheme.

Meanwhile, Nuvama said that Reliance New Energy rollout is expected to unleash its next leg of growth besides aiding conventional business. “We are raising FY26E Ebitda by 8 per cent (strong outlook), lifting our target by 10 per cent to Rs 3,500," it said, a day after Reliance reported a 1.8 per cent year-on-year drop in net profit for the March quarter on a 11.3 per cent jump in sales.
