Free: Continuing Education Courses in Research and Clinical Ethics

The Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy is offering the training you need in research and clinical ethics—now for free. Sign up to learn in brief segments as suits your schedule and interests. For a broad view of research or clinical ethics, choose a core course , which takes about four and a half hours to complete (usually costs $29.99).* For specialized topics, take a micro course —a burst of learning, roughly an hour long (usually costs $7.99 - $9.99).* Each includes lecture videos, readings, supplementary resources, and assessments. Physicians and physician assistants may earn CME credits, and nurses may earn contact hours by successfully completing these courses.
*As of April 24, 2020, all course fees will be waived through December 31, 2020.

Online Continuing Education Series
NCCIH is offering free, comprehensive videolectures about research in complementary health approaches. Topics range from mind-body pain therapies to acupuncture. These online videolectures provide an in-depth perspective on the current state of science, as related to complementary medicine.
Health professionals are eligible to receive continuing education credits (CME and CEU) and a certificate of completion at no cost.

Who are the lectures for?
This series was designed for physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals interested in research and learning about complementary medicine. Researchers, students, and members of the public are also welcome to view the online lectures and learn about NCCIH’s research.
Do I need to register to view the lectures?
You do not need to register to view the lectures. However, to receive continuing education credits or to print a certificate of completion registration is required. Additionally, registering will allow you to bookmark a video and return to complete a module at a later time.
How do I receive continuing education credits (CME or CEU)?
Register and watch one of the lectures. Each lecture includes a post-test that you must complete with an accuracy of 70% or higher in order to receive a CME or a CEU credit.
This online activity is approved for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit and 1 Nursing contact hour per lecture.

How do I print a certificate of completion?
The certificate of completion will appear on your screen once you complete a post-test with an accuracy of 70% or better. If you are unable to view the certificate, you may need to download Adobe Reader . You will also need Adobe Reader to view the video transcripts, which are available as links under each video.

Continuing Research Education Credit (CREC) Program
To help Case Western Reserve University’s researchers stay informed and up to date on training, the Office of Research and Technology Management facilitates the Continuing Research Education Credit (CREC) program.
Through CREC, you can take free documented training on protecting human subjects of research. CREC is a collaborative program between CWRU, The MetroHealth System and University Hospitals (UH), and all training complies with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) education requirements .

CREC Program Requirements
Before beginning research activities, each study team member conducting research with human subjects must complete the initial core training through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program , a subscription service offering research education content.
Initial Core Training for CREC Certification
The initial core training for the CREC certificate is one of the CITI courses below. Within the portal, select the course that is most relevant to your research or discipline. Only one of the courses will be eligible for credit.
- Group 1: Biomedical Research Faculty, Staff & Students
- Group 2: Social and Behavioral Research Faculty, Staff & Students
Enroll in Initial Core Training
Maintaining CREC Certification
Program members must acquire 12 credits every three years to maintain their CREC certification. Failure to attain credits will result in removal from the program. Once a member is removed from the program, they must complete the initial core training above.

Transferring CITI Training and Affiliating
Researchers can transfer current* CITI training by affiliating with the CWRU CREC program. Once affiliated, email [email protected] . Additional training may be required based on local criteria and funding sources. Please note that not all CITI certificates are accepted; completion reports are required.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Requirements
Nih good clinical practice training policy.
NIH-funded investigators and staff involved in the conduct, oversight, or management of clinical trials must receive training every three years in Good Clinical Practice (GCP), consistent with the principles of the International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) E6. Review the free GCP training offered through CITI or the additional options listed above.

National Science Foundation (NSF) Requirements
Nsf responsible conduct of research training policy.
All NSF faculty, senior personnel and trainees must complete Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training every three years.
Select one of four CITI RCR courses in biomedical research, humanities, physical science, or social and behavioral research. Download the instructions for adding the course for new CITI users or current CITI users . This training is not eligible for CREC.
