It can be interesting to think about your definition of a hero. When describing what the term hero means to you, you may want to choose a person (or a few people) you look up to as a hero to solidify your point. You might want to include fictional characters (such as those in the Marvel universe) and real-life brave souls, such as police officers and firefighters.

A word of caution: stay away from the cliche opening of describing how the dictionary defines a hero. Instead, lead-in with a personal story about a hero who has affected your life. While talking about a public figure as a hero is acceptable, you may find it easier to write about someone close to you who you feel has displayed heroic qualities. Writing about a family member or friend who has shown up as a heroic main character in your life can be just as exciting as writing about a real or imagined superhero.

From Beowulf to Marvel comics, heroes in literature take on many different traits. When writing an essay on what trait makes a hero come alive in a short story, novel, or comic, choose a few of your favorite heroes and find common themes that they share.

Perhaps your favorite heroes are selfless and are willing to put themselves last in the name of sacrifice for others. Perhaps they’re able to dig deep into the truth, being honest even when it’s hard, for the greater good. There’s no need to list endless heroes to make your point—choosing three or four heroes from literature can be a great way to support your argument about what characteristics define heroism in literature.

When someone is named a hero in real life, we often picture them saving people from a burning building or performing a difficult surgical operation. It can be difficult to pin down exactly what constitutes a heroic act. When writing about what constitutes a heroic act, think about people who go above and beyond, performing feats of courage, honesty, and bravery to support themselves or others. Writing Superhero Conclusions with the Phantom Endings Exercise

Students are taught that a closing paragraph should accomplish three things:

  • Restate an essay's thesis
  • Summarize main points
  • Provide a finished feel

In response to this information, young writers often exhibit confusion. "Aren't I repeating myself if I copy the same content from the first paragraph? And what's a finished feel?"

Although well intended, essay writing practice is often unfocused, instead of a targeted way of addressing problems with conclusions. And while instructors commonly suggest that novice authors read more mentor texts, this is not a direct route to improving writing , much less constructing conclusions. So what's a more time- and energy-efficient way to give students confidence about writing conclusions?

Goals and Models

Phantom endings, an assignment I developed for high school authors, is an efficient 15-20 minute exercise that helps students compose stronger endings. Learners read an essay with the last paragraph temporarily removed, write their own ending for the essay, and then compare their conclusion to the essay's original. Before trying this technique, complete two steps with your students.

Step 1: Teach Your Students the Goals of a Conclusion

There are two options here. Provide students with a very clear description of a conclusion with Purdue Online Writing Lab's (OWL) Writing a Developed and Detailed Conclusion (OWL describes three goals of conclusion writing that were mentioned in the first paragraph of this blog post). In addition, Time4Writing's Writing a Good Conclusion Paragraph suggests that a closing paragraph demonstrate to the reader that the writer accomplished what he or she set out to do.

To provide your students with less structured, more creative options, check out Lila Chalpin's On Ending with a Bang Not a Whimper (NCTE login required). Chalpin offers six compelling conclusions that will leave the reader with a strong impression, such as "end with the meaning that the theme of a literary work has to contemporary man" and "end with a by-product or after-effect of an issue which has just been analyzed." She also provides an example of each type of ending.

Also check out pages 90-103 of Steve Peha's The Writing Teacher's Strategy Guide , which provides over 15 strategies for what he calls "happy endings." He also includes examples of unsuccessful essay conclusions.

Step 2: Focus on Conclusion Models

Give students examples of the types of conclusions you want them to learn to write: novels, short stories, expository essays, etc. But don't overwhelm them by assigning too many long essays to study. It's only necessary to have them analyze a few whole works so they can see how final paragraphs draw on earlier sections of an essay.

Linda Aragoni suggests teaching conclusions via "how do" rather than "how to," explaining that students learn better by actually seeing closing paragraphs at work and analyzing how authors have used them, rather than by taking notes on how conclusions should be written.

Now You're Ready for Phantom Endings

This activity requires copies of sample essays that are short and categorized by reading levels -- we want the students to focus on the conclusions, not deciphering the text. You can find sample essays at Monroe College's Examples of Five-Paragraph Essays and at Sample Student Essays . Print out some essays that you would like to use and cut off their closing paragraphs. Make sure to save these endings. You'll need them later.

Next, have students read the essays (with conclusions excluded) and write their own final paragraphs for the texts. They should use the strategies and techniques you went over in Step 2.

After they complete their own conclusions, hand out the original final paragraphs and allow students time to compare and contrast. They should focus on what things the author included in his conclusion and why, and how the original final paragraph does or does not work better than the one they wrote. Here is some models completed by my 11th grade students .

Benefits of the Phantom Endings Activity

Since endings are " one of the most difficult parts of papers to write " (according to UNC's Writing Center), students need methodical, focused assistance in order to craft compelling conclusions. For those reasons, the phantom endings exercise is a good place to start. Additionally, the activity:

  • Takes minimal time for students to complete and teachers to evaluate
  • Works with multiple genres
  • Involves learners in identifying similarities and differences -- a high-yield instructional strategy
  • Is one that students find enjoyable

To wrap up your conclusion, zoom out to a broader view of the topic and consider the implications of your argument. For example:

  • Does it contribute a new understanding of your topic?
  • Does it raise new questions for future study?
  • Does it lead to practical suggestions or predictions?
  • Can it be applied to different contexts?
  • Can it be connected to a broader debate or theme?

Whatever your essay is about, the conclusion should aim to emphasize the significance of your argument, whether that’s within your academic subject or in the wider world.

Try to end with a strong, decisive sentence, leaving the reader with a lingering sense of interest in your topic.

The easiest way to improve your conclusion is to eliminate these common mistakes.

Don’t include new evidence

Any evidence or analysis that is essential to supporting your thesis statement should appear in the main body of the essay.

The conclusion might include minor pieces of new information—for example, a sentence or two discussing broader implications, or a quotation that nicely summarizes your central point. But it shouldn’t introduce any major new sources or ideas that need further explanation to understand.

Don’t use “concluding phrases”

Avoid using obvious stock phrases to tell the reader what you’re doing:

  • “In conclusion…”
  • “To sum up…”

These phrases aren’t forbidden, but they can make your writing sound weak. By returning to your main argument, it will quickly become clear that you are concluding the essay—you shouldn’t have to spell it out.

Don’t undermine your argument

Avoid using apologetic phrases that sound uncertain or confused:

  • “This is just one approach among many.”
  • “There are good arguments on both sides of this issue.”
  • “There is no clear answer to this problem.”

Even if your essay has explored different points of view, your own position should be clear. There may be many possible approaches to the topic, but you want to leave the reader convinced that yours is the best one!

And the impression you create in your conclusion will shape the impression that stays with your readers after they've finished the essay.

The end of an essay should therefore convey a sense of completeness and closure as well as a sense of the lingering possibilities of the topic, its larger meaning, its implications: the final paragraph should close the discussion without closing it off.

To establish a sense of closure, you might do one or more of the following:

  • Conclude by linking the last paragraph to the first, perhaps by reiterating a word or phrase you used at the beginning.
  • Conclude with a sentence composed mainly of one-syllable words. Simple language can help create an effect of understated drama.
  • Conclude with a sentence that's compound or parallel in structure; such sentences can establish a sense of balance or order that may feel just right at the end of a complex discussion.

Finally, some advice on how not to end an essay:

  • Don't simply summarize your essay. A brief summary of your argument may be useful, especially if your essay is long--more than ten pages or so. But shorter essays tend not to require a restatement of your main ideas.
  • Avoid phrases like "in conclusion," "to conclude," "in summary," and "to sum up." These phrases can be useful--even welcome--in oral presentations. But readers can see, by the tell-tale compression of the pages, when an essay is about to end. You'll irritate your audience if you belabor the obvious.
  • Resist the urge to apologize. If you've immersed yourself in your subject, you now know a good deal more about it than you can possibly include in a five- or ten- or 20-page essay. As a result, by the time you've finished writing, you may be having some doubts about what you've produced. (And if you haven't immersed yourself in your subject, you may be feeling even more doubtful about your essay as you approach the conclusion.) Repress those doubts. Don't undercut your authority by saying things like, "this is just one approach to the subject; there may be other, better approaches. . ."

Who is your hero? Most people when presented with a scenario to answer this question would think of a selfless character that braved the odds and rescued a situation that was getting out of hand. A hero is a person who is well-liked due to their successes and noble characteristics (The hero).

The likes of Martin Luther King Junior who advocated for equality among all races, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai who was buried in a papyrus casket for her love of nature, Clara Barton-an American activist; who risked her life on the battlefields of the Civil War to start the Red Cross and Oedipus of the Greek myths are all considered heroes by lots of people.

Although the heroes are understood differently among individuals, they are ordinary persons who posses more or less similar characteristics and could be anybody whose actions touch another person’s life.

Irrespective of gender, culture or traditions from which they are depicted, heroes possess some common characteristics. Although a hero could possibly possess all the five characteristics shared by heroism outlined by Miriam Polster (2-5), some could be more evident and overshadow others. Heroes and Heroines have respect for human life; they believe in the sanctity of life and often risk their lives for other’s sake. They have faith in the effectiveness of their choices and would pursue them in spite of opposition and criticism they may face.

They possess an original perspective and are not forced to accept and conform to agreements as they are but rather advocate for issues to be as they way should be. Heroism entails physical courage that makes one risk death and injury for other’s sake as well as mental courage that drives one not to be limited by the accepted “truths.” The acts of heroes usually may have public impacts or may impact profoundly to an individual and pass unnoticed.

The heroes usually go through a number of stages before they attain their desired destiny. Joseph Campbell (57) outlines the steps of the hero’s Journey. They reside in a normal world until they are “called to adventure” by the rise of a discovery or an event in need of help. They are faced with the task of refusing or accepting the call and enter a world of the unknown where they encounter a supernatural aid that helps them through their quest.

They require a talisman and a helper along the way for success. They go through a series of tests that strengthen and prepare them for the final hurdle. The heroes finally encounter the supreme ordeal, pass it successfully and are finally rewarded for the hard toil. Their success changes their lives and the lives of those around them and are stand qualified e.g. for marriage, Kingship or Queen ship.

Today the definition of the hero above as “a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability” is long fading into history (Thomson 116-117). The meaning of a hero has changed and depends entirely on the time and reason for which one is considered a hero and parallel to the advancement of society, religion and politics to suit the wishes of those involved.

This is because the characters of people have changed; people no longer live in those old days where societal rules were rigid and leadership hereditary. People strive to do good and those who take the task to the extreme end are considered heroes or do-gooders (Moore 2). “Social entrepreneurs” as are commonly referred to are less interested in their success but rather on changing the system as a whole.

Today extreme do-gooders focus their attention to environmental protection, improving the education of a child and eradication of poverty and diseases from the face of the earth. They are pleased to do good even though their actions may negatively affect them. A good example is that of the late professor Wangari Maathai from Kenya who advocated for environmental protection through a worldwide program “the Green Belt Movement” for planting trees in deforested zones and lost her parliamentary seat in the process.

She however won the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize becoming the first Woman in East and Central Africa to win the prestigious award. Another example is by Erick Brockovich, a legal secretary who dedicated her efforts in petitioning against a service company for polluting a source of water for a community.

Heroes have tales of adventure written against their names and an audience to listen to them; however they go past the usual fame and celebrity status (Tollefson 1). They are people who dedicate themselves to simplifying tasks for others and live lives that others strive to emulate by setting standards not achievable by the common man yet encourage him to pursue.

Heroes envision positive change and work towards it. Each person is faced with the same difficulties and the path they choose to follow in making their journey unrivaled is always different. People should be well aware of the mission of their journeys to successfully accomplish it and emerge as the ultimate hero.

Gone are the days when heroes were considered supernatural’s and enigmas, the future foresees a world where everyone strives to be their own hero.

Definition Of A Hero and Heroic Qualities

Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln, and Rosa Parks are all examples of people who did great things. With this said, when you see these names, you think of them as heroes. On the other hand, aren’t we forgetting the men and women who are just as noble and compassionate, such as single mothers, fathers, patient teachers, and kids who live to make others happy? An anonymous writer states that, “ There is a hero inside all of us, we just need the courage to put on the cape.” This is a very powerful quote because it doesn’t talk about well known, famous, heroic people. It shows that anyone can be hero, you just have to take risks. A quality definition of a hero is simple. A hero does extraordinary things in their everyday life; they do not strive for recognition, they do not want money, and they do not look for chances to be a “Hero”. And they attempt to be kind and sympathetic; but do not exclude others. In the real world, they are almost everyone around us. Regular people doing phenomenal things.

In the real world, all heroes have almost the same characteristics. They are kind, brave, selfless, and always willing to help. Yes, famous heroes share these traits, but we forget the people who are less open to tell about their good deeds. With this said, we do not realize the other heroes that are shaping our world for the better. Take Harriet Tubman for example, she did amazing things. She risked her life everyday, and saved people’s lives although the stakes were high. Only a small percentage of people knew what she did. But she did not seek fame, and accolade for saving others. No, she was humble and brave, and because of that, she is now recognized, she is a true hero. In other words, a hero does not save and help others just to do it. A hero usually helps people because they feel the need to do so. Whether it is saving someone from slavery because you were once a slave (Frederick Douglass) , or building awareness or a sense of community towards others, heroes are always assisting because they feel concerned, that is what makes them a true hero.

What kind of people are heroes to you? Are they buff men in armour, capes, or suits? If so, they are probably very unrealistic. Because of America’s history, television shows, and books, all advertise only heroes that are men. Kids, teens, and adults all get affected by this naive idea. For example, every superhero comic that is starring mostly, (or only) male characters are much more popular. Furthermore, kids and teens that are growing have a hard time truly defining what a hero is. Most kids in America will say a fire(man), a police(man), or a soldier, in which they probably also think of as men. Instead, heroes are small, young girls that speak up about subjects such as bullying, or organizations helping kids be happy and healthy all throughout their life. Or raising awareness of diseases and the way to help. For these reasons, hopefully you now understand that courage knows no boundaries, age, gender, or nationality.

The anti-hero

A hero is defined as “someone admired for his bravery, great deeds or noble qualities”. There are three categories to which all heroes can be classified into, one of which is the anti-hero genre. An anti-hero has the role of a hero thrust upon them. They do not particularly want to be brave or noble but their actions lead them to be a hero. Facing difficult decisions and doubt are also classic traits of an anti-hero. They often lack confidence in themselves, refuse to accept their fate as a hero or don’t even realise their status or ability. At a certain point, anti-heroes usually transcend into either a tragic or romantic hero.

Anti-heroes can be identified in many different texts, however, all of them consist of those traits. In ‘The Crucible’ by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is the hero of the play. He is a good man, described as being : “the kind of man –powerful of body, even-tempered, and not easily led…” He is feared and respected throughout the town of Salem, but few know that he is guilty of adultery with the teenage servant Abigail Williams. As a result of this affair, Proctor is caught in guilt, which effects his self-perception. “Were I stone I would have cracked for shame this seven month! ” He regards himself as a fraud.

These insecurities are the foundation of Proctors character development into an anti-hero. The first signs of Proctor being an anti-hero evolve when accusations of witchcraft arise and he is torn between confessing to adultery and revealing the information he knows to save innocent lives. He understands his obligations but is still hesitant due to his fear of the consequences. He says to Elizabeth “I know I cannot keep it! I say I will think on it! ’ The difficult decision and pressure is thrust upon Proctor and his reluctance to reveal his knowledge enhances his anti-hero visage.

He puts his reputation before doing the right thing and confessing. Proctor finds a way of exposing Abigail and her friends as liars without having to make his affair public. He persuades Mary Warren to tell the truth. Eventually Proctor admits to having committed adultery but not to be brave or heroic, but out of desperation to save his wife. Sensing Mary Warren’s weakness, Proctor is forced to talk about his relationship with Abigail. Although it seems noble, this heroic notion is categorised under anti-hero because Proctor merely confessed because he had to.

He did not want to and had avoided revealing his affair but it was the last thing he could do because of Abigail’s influence over Mary Warren. His last attempt at saving Elizabeth fails and Proctor is also accused of witchcraft. Proctor is sentenced to hang but given an opportunity to save himself- he must confess to being aligned with the devil. This choice is the climax of the play. Faced with yet another difficult decision, Proctor is torn between a life of lies or an honourable death. Being an anti-hero, he does not immediately come to the more heroic decision. Instead, he consults Elizabeth for advice.

In the end he chooses to commit himself to his friends and die an honest man. He states that “I have three children – how may I teach them to walk like men in the world, and I sold my friends? ” Proctor reasons that in confessing, he can never raise his children to be virtuous men without being labelled a hypocrite. By facing death, he proves his loyalty to friends and maintains a respectable reputation. Proctor faces his own death and in making this decision, Proctor becomes a tragic hero. Unlike Proctor who goes from anti-hero to tragic hero, Thomas Anderson transitions to a romantic hero.

Thomas Anderson is the anti-hero of “The Matrix”. Anderson is immediately established as the heroic figure, constantly referred to as “the one” but his doubt shapes him into an anti-hero. He is initially the classic anti-hero with a very notable twist – his role is not thrust upon him, all his decisions are consciously made. Neo does not see himself to be special and this is clearly evident when he is attempting to escape from the agents out the window. He can be heard to say “Why is this happening to me? What did I do? I can’t do this. ” He does not believe in himself and therefore can not stretch to his full potential inside the Matrix.

This is a characteristic of his that is maintained throughout the movie, and it is no coincidence that he is the last person to believe that he is the One. He also appears quite unwilling to be the “hero” at some points, for example when he learns about the matrix he is unable to handle the shock and refuses to accept it, shouting “No, I don’t believe it. It’s not possible. Stop. Let me out! Let me out! I want out! Stay away from me! I don’t believe… ” These are all classic antihero traits, but he also displays the elements of the romantic hero, particularly towards the end when Neo re-enters the Matrix in order to save Morpheus.

He knows that one of them must die, and the Oracle has told him that it will be up to him which one it is. Therefore, when he enters the Matrix he makes that choice, and knowingly goes to sacrifice himself for the sake of mankind. However, it is now that he is starting to believe in himself, and he also believes that he can bring Morpheus back. It is at this point that he starts to transcend into the romantic hero, he starts to believe in himself and to realise the truth. He sheds his old identity, Thomas Anderson and embraces his new one with the famous “My name is Neo. “

Similarly, in ‘Buffy the Vampire slayer’ (the movie), the anti-hero also transitions to a romantic hero. In this case, the hero is Buffy herself. A stereotypical teenage American bimbo who later on admits, “I didn’t even think about anything”, Buffy is tracked down my Merrick and told she is “the one”- the next slayer, chosen to battle the head vampire, Lothos. Like Anderson from The Matrix, Buffy is bewildered and does not fully comprehend how important she is. She sarcastically jokes “Let me get this straight- you’re saying that I have to go to the graveyard with you because I’m the chosen one and there are vampires?

Pfft! Does Elvis talk to you? ” Merrick tries again and again to convince her that she has been chosen but Buffy refuses to see anything as a higher priority than her social life. She is unwilling to take up the role but still listens to what Merrick has to teach her. She begins to believe in herself when Merrick proves to Buffy that she is “the one” by throwing a knife at her head unexpectedly, and Buffy catching it all the same. He claims “only the chosen one could have done it”. Buffy is then faced with the difficult choice all anti-heroes are faced with.

In her case, she must choose between her demanding social life and committing herself to being a slayer. Being an anti-hero, she does not choose to be a slayer enthusiastically. She furiously yells “Don’t you get it? All I want to do is graduate from high school, fly off to Europe, marry Christian Slater and die! ” It is when Merrick gives his life for her that Buffy fully accepts her responsibility and transitions to a romantic hero. She sacrifices her friends, school, boyfriend and senior dance to battle the mighty Lothos. All three texts have resemblances in terms of their development.

Each of the anti-heroes face confusion and doubt followed by a difficult decision, then an incident that inspires and gives them confidence, finishing with a heroic act. In the Crucible, Proctor is unstable because of his shameful affair with Abigail. Then he has to choose between exposing Abigail and admitting adultery. Then he almost confesses to witchcraft when he sees the Rebecca and he regains his senses and willpower to finally make the heroic act of dying for his friends and family. In the Matrix, Neo is unsure of what the Matrix is and the concept drives his curiosity mad.

He is then faced with the decision of the blue pill or the red pill. Next his courage is uplifted with Trinity’s kiss and faith in him so he awakens to finally fully apprehend the rules of the Matrix. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy faces doubt as to whether she should believe Merrick and soon the decision whether slaying was worth sacrificing her social life. The death of Merrick and love from Pike encourages Buffy to go on, and she is able to defeat Lothos. Although the character developments are quite the same, each text uses different textual styles and techniques.

The Crucible is in the format of a play. John Proctor is established as the hero through the use of Miller’s contrast in characters. Upon his introduction, Proctor seems to be the only calm, sensible and logical character among the rising hysteria of Abigail’s threats, Parris’ damnations and babble of the Putnam’s. Proctor is easily set apart from the other characters and the beginning of the play due to the obvious differences in character. Miller also builds up the climax throughout the book by making the conversations very quick paced and intense. The Matrix relies heavily on the technique of symbolism.

It is used frequently throughout the film implying both vital and obscure things. For example, the use of sunglasses. They indicated a characters strength and vulnerability. Or the doors representing the choices in Neo’s life, the signs strategically placed throughout the film or even Neo’s name being an anagram of the word “one”. In Buffy, the film style is stereotypical and over exaggerated. The blonde bimbo cheerleader who faces the evil vampire with the black cape and fangs. The dialogue sounding somewhat like “that was so 5 minutes ago” and “oh, get out of my facial”.

Perhaps the stereotypical settings are used to make a clear contrast with Buffy when she begins to accept her true identity. She drops the bimbo attitude and takes life more seriously, claiming “Things I thought were so crucial have just become so stupid …it’s a stupid dance with some stupid people that I see every stupid day” Another aspect that the texts differ from each other is their cultural and social values. The Crucible is set in the Salem witch-hunt of 1962. The story revolves around the importance of Christianity and the harsh punishments for those who were not religious.

It reflected the society, from religion to roles of women in the family. It explored the themes of jealousy, love, reputation, revenge and adultery but at the same time also was an allegory of the 1950 McCarthyism. Witches representing the communists and Parris with the other judges representing the Un-American Activities committee. The Matrix was released in 1999 and reflects the present societies growing independence and rapid development of technology. It questions the audience as they are faced with the frightening possibility that Artificial Intelligence may take ver the world.

The film also portrays several cultural values. It is a direct parallel to Buddhism, Christianity and the Greek concepts of oracles. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, released in 1992 can be seen as a representation of teenagers of today. Taking for granted a “normal” life that revolves around school, parties and friends. The Crucible and The Matrix exhibit more cultural and social values than Buffy and they are both done exceptionally well, covering many different themes and aspects without taking away from the plot or story.

The Crucible, The Matrix and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are three totally separate texts that are linked in some ways, like their developments of character, and vary other ways, like in terms of technique and value exhibition. However, all three texts have a character that is the image of an anti-hero- whom will remain its own genre, with the same characteristics, no matter it be set in Salem, cyber space, high school- or anywhere else in the world. The anti-hero remains someone who has had it thrust upon them to be admired for bravery, great deeds or noble qualities.

Amy Ettinger, who inspired readers with her life-affirming essays on dying, succumbs to cancer at 49

( JTA ) — Amy Ettinger,  an author and creative writing instructor who chronicled the last months of her life in articles for the Washington Post , died March 20 from cancer at her home in Santa Cruz, California. She was 49.

Ettinger’s essays focused on the things she was able to do and cherish despite her diagnosis with a rare, incurable cancer called leiomyosarcoma : seeing a live performance of “Mamma Mia!” with her 14-year-old daughter, Julianna; eating her favorite pastry from a San Francisco bakery.

“ I’ve learned that life is all about a series of moments, and I plan to spend as much remaining time as I can savoring each one, surrounded by the beauty of nature and my family and friends,”she wrote.

Ettinger was an occasional contributor to Kveller, the Jewish family website that is a Jewish Telegraphic Agency partner. There she wrote about her mother’s kugel recipe (“light brown on its crispy top, and the color of milky coffee in the middle”) , and how she, as a “non-observant Jew,” marked Yom Kippur — which in 2013 happened to fall on her 10th wedding anniversary .

“Like Yom Kippur, a wedding anniversary is a time to take a step back from your daily life — to weigh the good and bad, to contemplate your triumphs and missteps, to make a vow to do better individually and as a couple,” she wrote.

Ettinger was born in Rochester, New York, and grew up in Cupertino, California. She discovered her calling as a journalist in high school. She majored in American literature at UC Santa Cruz and earned a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University in 1999.

Her writing appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, New York Magazine, Salon, CNN and Newsweek. In a 2021 article for AARP, she wrote how her mother’s death inspired her to learn Sheila Ettinger’s favorite game: mahjong. She taught writing classes at Stanford Continuing Studies.

In 2017,  Penguin Random House published her memoir-cum-travelogue “Sweet Spot: An Ice Cream Binge Across America.” In it she wrote how she keeps “between fifteen and thirty dollars’ worth of ice cream in my freezer at all times” — not to eat, but as an “emergency backup system” in case one of her favorite shops or stores runs out.

Her follow-up story to her Washington Post article, titled  “I Have Little Time Left. I Hope My Goodbye Inspires You,” appeared on the newspaper’s homepage less than two weeks before she died.

“I am choosing to focus my limited time and energy on doing the things I love with the people I care most about. It’s a formula that works, I think, no matter where you are in your life,” she wrote.

In an article written after she died , her husband, the writer Dan White, wrote that she had dictated her last essay to him from a reading room at UC Santa Cruz with a view of a redwood forest. He said she had gotten hundreds of personal responses: A handful “unwelcome, including missives from ultrareligious people wanting my proudly Jewish wife to get saved to spare herself from hellfire,” but the vast majority saying Ettinger had inspired them to make the most of their lives no matter the cards they’d been dealt.

“Amy had no way of predicting that the lines she composed on the spot would be calls to action for readers from all over the United States, as well as Canada, Poland, France and Greece,” White wrote.

Admitted students talk role of ChatGPT in essays amid changing admissions policies

Artificial intelligence (AI) is receiving a growing focus at Princeton, serving as the subject of the Class of 2028 Pre-Read and spurring the creation of the Princeton Language and Intelligence Initiative (PLI) in September 2023. ChatGPT’s growing popularity has recently sparked conversation about its place in the classroom and whether it can be accurately detected .

Questions about the role of AI in essay writing and the weight essays should hold in the admissions process remain, during an admissions cycle already upturned by the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down affirmative action. These concerns have already resulted in Duke University’s decision to abandon the practice of scoring applicant essays.

The newly admitted Class of 2028 is the first Princeton class to have access to this controversial technology during the admissions process. The Daily Princetonian spoke to admits on their perspective on the usage of generative AI during the college application process, and a professor with expertise in the field.

All three incoming members of the Class of 2028 interviewed by the ‘Prince’ said that they had not used any form of AI in their essays, though one student experimented with AI during the essay-writing process.

They expressed that they felt the personal focus of the essay made it an ill-fit for AI assistance. 

“I don’t really know what it would help with because you’re supposed to write about yourself, and it doesn’t know anything about you,” Jacob Emerson ’28 said.

Jamie Creasi ’28 expressed a similar sentiment. “There’s no way for it to communicate the challenges I’ve experienced, or what kind of life I have,” she said.

Hemant Sharma ’28 described his experience with attempting to use AI. He found that his essay “lost its emotional touch” so he ended up reverting to his old essay. “[ChatGPT] just made everything worse,” he said.

The University shares this position. In a written statement to the ‘Prince,’ University Spokesperson Jennifer Morrill wrote, “An essay generated by an AI platform is unlikely to be as rich and nuanced as a student’s own words.”

The ‘Prince’ spoke with Associate Professor of Computer Science Arvind Narayanan about ChatGPT's writing abilities. Professor Narayanan said that while AI may be capable of writing a passable essay, it likely would not be any easier than writing an essay without AI assistance. 

Professor Narayanan said, “If the use of AI assistance causes [the college admissions essay] to matter even less, I see it as an entirely positive development,” finding the essay to be “an exercise in performative authenticity.” 

The new admits differed in opinion about regulating generative AI use in the college admissions process. Creasi likened the usage of ChatGPT to a calculator which helps conduct simple calculations in order to allow a focus on more complex tasks.

“At first, people saw calculators as a way of cheating because you don’t have to do a lot of the equations that you once did or use your mind in the same sort of way. But since then, we’ve adapted to calculators … we can do higher level math or physics,” he said.

Conversely, Sharma felt that detection of AI usage in a college essay should be allowed, stating, “I think there should be at least a minor punishment because it’s easier if we curb it now so that it doesn’t hurt anyone later in the future.” 

However, even if schools agreed to take action against students suspected of unauthorized AI use, Professor Narayanan believes AI-identification technology is not at the “level of accuracy that would make it justifiable to penalize applicants for using AI assistance.”

As artificial intelligence models run out of data to train themselves on, AI companies are increasingly turning to actual humans to write training content.

For years, companies have used gig workers to help train AI models on simple tasks like photo identification , data annotation, and labelling. But the rapidly advancing technology now requires more advanced people to train it.

Companies such as Scale AI and Surge AI are hiring part-timers with graduate degrees to write essays and creative prompts for the bots to gobble up, The New York Times reported . Scale AI, for example, posted a job last year looking for people with Master's degrees or PhDs, who are fluent in either English, Hindi, or Japanese and have professional writing experience in fields like poetry, journalism, and publishing.

Their mission? To help AI bots "become better writers," Scale AI wrote in the posting.

And an army of workers are needed to do this kind of work. Scale AI has as many as tens of thousands of contractors working on its platform at a time, per the Times.

"What really makes the A.I. useful to its users is the human layer of data, and that really needs to be done by smart humans and skilled humans and humans with a particular degree of expertise and a creative bent," Willow Primack, the vice president of data operations at Scale AI, told the New York Times. "We have been focusing on contractors, particularly within North America, as a result."

The shift toward more sophisticated gig trainers comes as tech giants scramble to find new data to train their technology on. That's because the programs learn so incredibly fast that they're already running out of available resources to learn from. The vast trove of online information — everything from scientific papers to news articles to Wikipedia pages — is drying up.

Epoch, an AI research institute, has warned that AI could run out of data by 2026.

So, companies are finding more and more creative ways to make sure their systems never stop learning. Google has considered accessing its customers' data in Google Docs , Sheets, and Slides while Meta even thought about buying publishing house Simon & Schuster to harvest its book collection, Business Insider previously reported.
