Describe a happy family event that you remember well

Band 8 Sample

Well, this is a very nice topic for me and I would love to talk about one of my most memorable childhood events that I had with my family. The celebration was to welcome a new member to our family, the birth of my  nephew . My eldest sister gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby boy and he was the first grandchild of my parents.

After seeing the newborn baby for the first time, my father  declared  that this was a really special occasion and that we must celebrate to welcome the newest member into our family. So we all got to work straight away organising and planning for the party, my parents set out to invite all the guests and do the necessary shopping while my grandmother and sister cooked a lot of delicious food.

I was so happy and excited that when the  gorgeous  baby arrived, I didn’t leave his side. I wanted to be near him and play with him all the time but he was still so small that he couldn’t play with any of the toys I had given him. But it didn’t really matter because I could just stare at his cute face all day long anyway.

It really was a day full of happiness,  amazement  and celebration. The arrival of a beautiful baby into the family had brought us all together. Many friends and relatives  turned up  for the occasion, and it was definitely a very happy event for our whole family, close friends and relatives.

Vocabulary highlights:

  • nephew  – the son of your brother or sister
  • declared  – to announce or express something clearly
  • gorgeous  – very beautiful or attractive
  • amazement  –  extreme surprise
  • turned up  – to arrive

Sample Recording

1. nephew – the son of your brother or sister

2. declared – to announce or express something clearly

3. gorgeous – very beautiful or attractive

4. amazement – extreme surprise

5. turned up – to arrive

IELTS Cue Card # 141 – A family celebration you once attended

IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

Describe a family celebration you once attended.

You should say:

  • where it took place
  • why it was held
  • how you felt about it

and explain why it was important to you.

Follow-up Questions: Q. What types of family celebrations are common in your country? Q. Why these types of celebrations are important in your country?

Model Answer 1:

Time flies really fast, and the event, that took place a year ago, seems like happened only a week ago or so. In fact, I can still vividly remember the day when I celebrated a happy new year with all of my family members about a few years ago.

However, before that day though, I and my family had wanted to celebrate a happy reunion of the entire family for quite some time, but it just didn’t happen because both my elder brother and sister were not able to make them available because they both used to live quite far away from me and my parents due to their professions. But, we saw a great window of opportunity to have a family celebration as soon as a new year was about to arrive as both of my elder brother and younger sister confirmed that they would visit us on the eve of New Year and spend a few days with us.

Anyway, since it was a rare opportunity, we all wanted to make our family reunion a memorable event by celebrating a happy new year together at a nearby restaurant. So, on the eve of New Year, we all went to the restaurant and ordered our favourite food and desserts. Once, our food fests were over, we decided to head to our home and watch some of our old family videos in order to revisit our lovely and happy past as children. At the end of our reunion, I felt like the celebration was long overdue as we all enjoyed our time to the fullest.

It was really important for me and my family to attend this celebration because it helped us understand the value of my family like never before. Besides, it also gave us an opportunity to relax and have some fun with the entire family after a tiring and long work year.

Sample Answer 2:

I often visit my hometown, during vacations or public holidays, where my parents and other family members live. For this topic, I would like to talk about my younger sister’s birthday celebration which I attended a year ago. It was strictly a family celebration from the perspective that no other neighbours or friends were invited and only our close family members celebrated this occasion.

Before the celebration, my mother and the younger sister asked me if I would be able to join them. Since it was just the beginning of my semester, I had been able to manage time to travel to my hometown and join my family.

The celebration took place at our house at (…say your hometown’s name…) . This was a family reunion and the occasion was my younger sister’s 16th birthday. I was excited to join the celebration as all of my family members including the newborn of my eldest sister would also be there. I had not been able to visit my family for a few months and that was a perfect opportunity to meet my family members and spend some enjoyable and quality time with them.

I was thinking to buy a digital camera for my younger sister and that was a precise occasion to buy her the gift. My sister was very excited to have it as her birthday gift. Celebrations like birthdays are always important in our family as it allows us to get together and spend a few days together. As two of my sisters are married and live in two different cities with their husbands, they also attend such occasions and we all enjoy our stay together. From this perspective, this was an important occasion for us.

Describe a family event you are looking forward to.

You should say:

  • What the event is
  • Where it will be held
  • What you will do at this event
  • Explain why you are looking forward to this event.

Celebrations bring excitement in life as well as help us feel refreshed and let us enjoy a timely break from the monotonous routine. I have become part of several family events in my life but here i will talk about the one which i am really looking forward to being a part of.

It is my nephew’s sweet 16th birthday party. His birthday is on the 29th of March. My brother is planning to throw a party on this occasion and invite all our near and dear ones in Canada and me and my parents are also planning to visit them for taking part in this celebration. My parents and I already have 8-year Canadian tourist visas granted since 2018 so all we will have to do is get for ourselves the air tickets to Canada.

My brother is planning to celebrate this event in Jasper which is a 4-hour drive from their hometown, Edmonton. Jasper, an alpine town in Canada’s Alberta province, is the commercial centre of Jasper National Park. Amid the snow-capped Canadian Rockies, the park has suave glacier-fed lakes, forests and rivers. We are planning to invite around 25 close relatives and friends and make 2 nights and 2 days arrangements for everyone at a hotel. We will arrange for the stay and also celebrate the birthday at Fairmont Jasper Park Hotel. We will visit all the hotspots in Jasper and also take everyone for a ride in Jasper’s skytram. I am planning to buy some gifts for my nephew, both nieces, brother and sister-in-law such as traditional Punjabi clothes and shoes. We are really looking forward to this event as me and parents were not able to make it on my nieces’ 16th birthdays. Moreover, my nephew has insisted us to be there on his birthday as he is very fond of all three of us, especially my mother. So my brother, parents and I have a lot of time in hand to make required preparations for the much awaited event. So this is the family celebration which we all are eager for.

Family Gatherings: Promoting Bonds to Last a Lifetime

By: Author Dr. Patrick Capriola

Posted on Published: September 30, 2019

essay about a family event

The family meal has always been a special time for families. It’s known to give families a sense of belonging and togetherness.

It just goes to show that many families know they don’t need to a big event to have a family gathering.

What is a Family Gathering? A family gathering is an event or activity that happens regularly and brings families together for bonding. A family gathering can be minor (like a share nightly dinner) or major (like reunions). Family gatherings are essential for healthy family development and relationship building.

A family gathering as small as the family meal may not seem that important, but research suggests the bonds formed during these gatherings are essential for a child’s development.

Studies show family gatherings positively impact the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of all family members, especially the youngest ones ( source ).

Before going into the details, it is essential to understand how researchers define family gatherings.

They usually divide gatherings into two categories: routines and rituals. One is an ordinary action, while the other is special, but both are important.

In nearly every case, regular contact with family members through routines and rituals has a positive effect on child development, and that’s why they are so meaningful.

In fact, family gatherings can even protect children when going through stressful situations ( source ).

Family Routines as Family Gatherings

essay about a family event

Routines are necessary, assigned tasks to family members. Really, they are just things that need to happen.

Establishing positive routines is one way to engage in healthy family gatherings.

These simple, repetitive actions are often positive, but if parents aren’t careful, they can also harm the family.

Routines, such as getting the mail or getting ready in the morning, can create a rhythm of life, a sense of normalcy, and a place in the family, while negative routines involving abuse or marital dysfunction can cause chaos and stress.

Sophia’s mother, Lauren, packs a lunchbox meal for her daughter every night so that it will be ready in the morning.

This activity is something that must be done, and nothing much is said or thought about it. That makes packing her daughter’s lunchbox a routine.

If Sophia did not have a lunch to take with her, however, she would have nothing to eat while at school.

That means even a simple routine like this has a significant impact, and it shows Sophia that her mother cares about her welfare.

If instead of packing a lunch each day, Lauren told Sophia she eats too much and doesn’t need to eat lunch, that would be a negative routine.

Lauren may not think about what she is saying, or she may think she is helping Sophia, but constant criticism and punishment is unhealthy and does not bring the family closer.

Family Rituals as Family Gatherings

If routines are essential, what are family rituals, and why are they important too?

Like routines, rituals are repeated activities, but they hold a special place in the heart of a family.

Family gatherings that are considered rituals can include celebrations, traditions, or even daily activities between two or more members if the activities are considered special in some way ( source ).

One family’s celebration of holidays, for example, will be very different from another’s.

That difference is what makes each ritual unique. The ritual tells family members who they are, both as a family and as a part of the family.

Sophia’s family always celebrates Thanksgiving together in a very special way.

All the members of her family are there, from cousins to her great-grandmother.

Every year, they gather around the fireplace and sing the family’s favorite songs from generations ago.

Then it’s time for each member of the family to say something they are thankful for, beginning with the oldest family member and ending with the youngest.

After that, Jorge carries on the family tradition of carving the turkey, while Lauren brings out the family’s secret-recipe stuffing.

Even though there are no presents, Thanksgiving is Sophia’s favorite holiday because she gets to see all the relatives and play with her cousins.

The family ritual is special to her because it helps her understand her big family, their values, and their culture. When she is grown, she will continue the ritual.

The Relationship Between Routines and Rituals

The line begins to blur between routines and rituals when ordinary activities gain special meanings.

A classic example of this overlap is the family dinner, and that’s because it is almost universal.

For several years now, Jorge stops by the store on his way home from work to pick up food for that night’s dinner.

Since he does this nearly every night, and since he doesn’t even think about it anymore, his shopping is considered a mealtime routine. That is not a hard-and-fast rule, however.

Gathering food, meal preparation or the meal itself could be considered a family ritual because it could contain items, conversations, or other actions that are considered special to that family ( source ).

If both of Sophia’s parents love to grocery shop or cook, and it is their special time to discuss the events of the day or pass on the tradition to their young children, the actions would then be considered a family ritual.

Likewise, if when Jorge and Lauren sit down with their her at the dinner table to discuss the events of the day, to encourage each other, or to engage in a religious tradition, it is also considered a family ritual.

It is also possible for a family ritual, such as dinnertime, to become a routine.

For that to happen, the ritual loses meaning and importance. If Sophia’s family used to look forward to mealtimes, but now they no longer interact with each other, for example, it is no longer special.

It is a non-nurturing routine that no longer helps family members bond.

How Family Gatherings Benefit Children

essay about a family event

There are several reasons why family gatherings are so essential to create healthy relationships:

  • Family gatherings strengthen family and individual identity
  • Family gatherings create stability
  • Family gatherings help children with physical and mental health issues

Family Gatherings Strengthen Identity

As children grow, they try to make sense of the world. Most of that understanding comes from experiences with the world around them, and that includes family members.

Family gatherings help children understand who they are and what their role is in the family.

In fact, a child’s self-image can be significantly impacted by those family experiences, so it is important to take gatherings seriously.

Sophia is the youngest child in her family, and she has two older brothers, Jacob and Lucas.

Her brothers already had established roles in the family, so Sophia needed to find hers.

Jorge, her father, made sure Sophia was included in family gatherings, such as dinnertime.

Sophia’s father taught her how to set the table, and that became her routine.

It always gave her a sense of accomplishment, even if she wasn’t always excited about doing it. When it came to the actual dinner, Sophia had a role too.

Lauren would ask each child to say one good thing that happened at school that day, and Sophia always went last.

Going last each time helped Sophia understand her role as the youngest member of the family.

It meant she was supposed to respect older family members.

At the same time, since Sophia also had a chance to tell her story and was not left out, she knew her experiences were valued as much as her siblings.

Giving each child a role to play in family gatherings, whether it’s gathering wood for the campout or tying the bows on presents, gives them a sense of belonging.

It helps them feel valued and motivates them to participate in future family activities.

Family Gatherings Create Stability

There is another benefit to a child’s healthy sense of self, and that has to do with stability.

The world is not always a happy, friendly place, but research has shown that children with regular routines and positive family rituals are more well-adjusted than their peers ( source ).

Regular bedtimes are an excellent example of a healthy routine. Sophia knows her bedtime is at 9:00, and that time is treated consistently.

When she was little, there was no set time, and she had both a difficult time going to sleep and staying asleep.

Once her parents learned about the importance of routines, Sophia benefited and now sleeps through the night.

Children thrive in a predictable world with predictable boundaries .

It helps them feel safe and secure. Not only that, but all family members benefit psychologically.

Healthy family rituals also help children feel safe. Dinnertime at Sophia’s house also includes time for her and her brothers to discuss anything that is troubling them.

All three siblings know their traditional family dinner is a safe place to discuss their feelings and seek help from their parents.

Just knowing that each day, she has that safe place to discuss her feelings helps Sophia feel loved, secure, and protected.

She feels like her parents listen to her, and that is special.

Family Gatherings Help Children with Mental Health Issues

So far, the discussion has been about ordinary families, but what if one or more children are dealing with health issues?

How do family gatherings impact a child’s health?

It is important to know that routines and rituals offer stability not only in everyday life but also when things are stressful.

Studies have focused on the positive impact family gatherings have on adolescents ( source ).

With so much at stake, what can parents do? While it is a complex issue, positive routines and rituals can make a significant impact.

In fact, regular, positive family gatherings have been shown to lower incidences of emotional and behavioral problems.

Sophia’s older brother, Jacob, is dealing with other students who are being mean to him at school, and the situation is very stressful. Fortunately, because of family routines and rituals, he knows he is not alone.

When Lauren drops Jacob off at school one day, she can tell he is anxious, and that the familiar routine is not quite right.

Jacob tells her about these students, and she discusses the situation with school officials.

When Lauren picks him up from school that afternoon, she tells him what she did to help, and allows him to speak.

She uses both the morning and afternoon routines to communicate with her son and give him the support he needed.

Later that night, the family dinner ritual continues. All three children tell the family something positive from that day, and then they discuss problems.

Jacob brings up what has happened so far, and all the family members discuss the issue together.

By the end of dinner, Jacob feels better.

He knows his family cares and will be there for him.

Family gatherings may not eliminate the cause of stress, but it will help children learn how to cope with stress.

Family gatherings help family members create positive bonds that lead to a better sense of self-worth .

Studies have also shown that healthy interactions help with even more serious mental health issues such as depression.

Positive family relationships assist with psychological maturity, identity, and self-worth in girls, who are more likely than boys to suffer from depression.

On the other hand, a study conducted in 2002 showed that adolescents with less involvement in family gatherings were more likely to use mental health services.

It is eye-opening to see just how much family routines and rituals affect the mental health of children.

Family Gatherings Help Children with Physical Health Issues

Families are sometimes affected by sudden or chronic health issues as well. Once again, family gatherings can add a sense of normalcy in a difficult situation.

More families are faced with chronic health issues than in years past, and that means more families are faced with the challenges of maintaining a sense of normalcy amid change ( source ).

Studies show that families who adopt routines and rituals or who create new, positive family gatherings are much more likely to show resilience.

Sophia’s oldest brother, Lucas, has cancer. While their family tries to keep as many family gatherings the same as they were before, that is not always possible.

Sometimes Lucas is too sick to participate in the family dinner, so before dinnertime begins, the family comes to his room and goes through their conversational rituals together before going to the dinner table.

Lucas is very aware of his illness, but this adaptation of a cherished ritual means the world to him.

When he is home from the hospital, his parents do all they can to create a sense of normalcy for everyone, and it helps them all cope with the stress.

Creating new routines and rituals are a part of this new reality, and they can provide a great deal of comfort.

When Lucas has chemotherapy treatments, his parents have created a new ritual. One of them is always there to hold Lucas’s hand for the entire procedure.

They talk about happy memories and tell jokes. Afterward, they let him choose a movie for the family to watch at home, and when he feels well enough, they all watch it together.

Issues that Affect Family Gatherings

essay about a family event

Several factors can negatively impact family gatherings. In most cases, it’s really a matter of how those factors are managed.

Studies have shown work schedules and parental changes all have some effect, but those effects were not always the same.

Work schedules have changed a great deal in the past half-century. In 2016, women spent approximately 25 hours a week in paid positions, compared to 9 hours a week in 1965.

On a positive note, mothers an average of 14 hours per week on childcare, compared to 10 hours per week in 1965. Fathers have also increased their role in childcare ( source ).

That means spending more time at work does not necessarily mean less time with the family.

In addition to both parents working, the number of parents working at more than one job or nontraditional hours is up.

While working is part of adult life, planning is required to have meaningful family gatherings.

Parental changes (separation, divorce, etc.) can have a much more significant effect on the family because the actual family structure is altered.

The adverse effects of separation and divorce are well-documented, but one thing parents may not consider is the impact they have on family gatherings.

Important family rituals, such as holiday traditions, birthdays, and vacations, will face disruption.

The good news is when parents and stepparents work together to maintain and form new routines and rituals, the children adapt more quickly.

Final Thoughts

Family gatherings, whether they are large or small, matter… a lot.

They provide boundaries, identity, and stability for children, which in turn will prepare them for and protect them from the stresses of life.

If they feel safe and loved at home, and if there is excellent communication, children will turn to their parents, rather than friends for advice and wisdom.

As a parent, I couldn’t wish for more.

Sample Answer 1

Diwali is the largest celebration in India, and it is a festival of light and togetherness. Every year, I look forward to celebrating Diwali with my Punjabi family. It also happens to be the largest festival and family gathering event for us since all my family members get together and spend time in my grandparent’s house.

Every year, we make it a point to get together at my grandparents’ place to celebrate Diwali. We were unable to meet and celebrate this festival as a group due to Covid. As a result, this year, we decided to make the stay a bit longer. My paternal uncle and aunt are flying from Australia to join us on this auspicious Diwali occasion. I, too, am based in Bangalore for work and want to pay a visit to my grandparents and other family members during the celebration. My parents will also be flying in from Delhi. I’m also looking forward to seeing all of my family members, especially my cousins and grandparents, who I don’t get to see very often during the year.

This year, I want to get gifts for my cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents, etc. I’ll also decorate the house with lights and flowers, assist my grandparents with the necessary shopping for the ceremonies, and spend the days with my cousins performing various fun activities. I also want to play monopoly with everyone and engage in extensive chit-chat while eating the delectable fare. Additionally, this is the one time of year when my entire family comes together. Therefore, I’m looking forward to seeing everyone after a two-year hiatus and thoroughly enjoying this family gathering.

Sample Answer 2

Celebrations are an essential part of human life. They bring joy and happiness with colossal excitement, which allows us to take a timely break from our monotonous routine. Here, I’d like to talk about my brother’s destination wedding, which will be held at the end of this month in Thailand, which I’m really looking forward to. Destination weddings indeed bring many joyful and memorable moments to one’s wedding journey. Initially, my brother wanted to have an intimate wedding. But what’s a wedding without inviting the Kith and Kin?. Though the guest list was never-ending, we invited only a few of our closest relatives to the wedding as they are an integral part of the wedding preparations and memories. My brother and I surfed the web and found some of the best wedding venues in Thailand. As he wanted to get hitched with a gorgeous sunset in the backdrop, Hua Hin was the perfect place. All the arrangements were made, and tickets were booked. As a responsible sister of the groom, it was my responsibility to welcome the guests and look after them in the best possible way. I had to ensure that everyone had a comfortable and safe stay at the resort. Up and until about, this is the first destination wedding in my family, and it really feels great to attend a once-in-a-lifetime event, which is an excellent opportunity to meet and greet all the family members.

A family is one of the greatest gift god has given to all living creatures on the earth including humans. It is a privilege to have a happy family as not everyone in the world has it.

The joy of living with your parents, fighting with your siblings over petty can just make you smile the moment you think of it. In order to inculcate the values of a family in the students, we have composed some short essays for students.

These essays are suited for students of all ages and classes. Not only these essays shall give an insight on how a family should be but shall also enrich the students with the moral values of a family.

Audience: The below given essays are exclusively written for kids, children and school students.

Family is important to every one of us and we all love our family. Wherever we go in this world and whatever we may achieve, our heart and soul will always be in our home because it is where our beautiful family is. Nothing in this world can be stronger than the bonding of the blood . The members of the same family may have differences of opinions, may quarrel often for silly things but in spite of all these it is our family that supports us during our ups and downs.

As the saying goes, “ Family is the best thing you could ever wish for. They are there for you during the ups and downs and love you no matter what”.

Contrary to this saying, we cannot choose our family as we choose our friends. But I can say that I’m blessed with a wonderful family. My family is very small with four members – my mother, my father, my elder sister and me. My family is a middle class family and my father is officially the bread winner of our family. My mother supports him financially by taking tuitions for school children.

We do not have much money or wealth but what my family has in abundance is love for each other which cannot be replaced by anything else in this world. My father and my mother are the role models to my sister and me. They struggle a lot to give us a better life. More than anything they have taught us discipline and morals of life which is helping us to lead our lives in a righteous path even today.

I cannot ask anything more to God since he has already showered me with my family which I treasure the most every second and will safeguard even in the future.

The family is a valuable god gift which plays a most crucial role in every individual’s life. I love my family very much because all of my family members stand in my good as well as bad times. From moral teachings to love and support, my family has always helped me without any demand. There is no doubt that we experience our biggest triumphs when we really connect to them.

My family is like a strong pillar for me, on which I can rely blindly anytime I require support. From my family, I have learned the social graces of loyalty & cooperation.

My family consists of my grandfather, my grandmother, my mother, my father, two young sisters and myself. My grandparents are the pillars of my family and my grandfather is the head of my family. He is the one whose decision relating to any matter is final and all of us do respect it.

Right from my childhood, my family members have prepared me for the challenges that I’ll face in the years ahead. In addition to this, all of my family members help and serve each other at times of need. These qualities that I have learnt from my family has helped me to shape my adult life in a right manner.

I am really very attached to my grandfather. He holds an excellent life experience because he has already faced so many ups and downs. My Grandfather has helped me to build my perception & vision towards society.

My family has always been there to motivate and encourage me to overcome all difficulties in life and achieve success. The role of every member in my family is unique and important in their own way. I thank God that I have grown up in a family full of love and discipline. My family values will definitely help me in becoming a better person.

A person without family and its love never becomes completely happy in his/her life. I am complete and happy with my family that includes five members. My family is a group of five including me, father, mother, brother, and sister. Family bonding is a unique type of love that gives you every lesson needed to live a harmonious life.

Growing under the supervision of a caring and loving family will increase our social values and overall well-being. Each member of my family carries out equal responsibility in sculpting the strong bonding needed for a better future and develop moral importance in each other.

My father owns a successful business of office stationery store. He uses the money to cover all our expenses and give a better lifestyle to the family. He works hard day and night to get us better education, food, home, etc. He hides all his tiredness when he comes home after a long day to spend quality time with us.

My mother is a talented homemaker who also does a part-time tailoring at home. She does all her duties with at most interest, from taking care of us to all the household chores and finds time to pursue her passion as well. She is a multi-tasker and does all the tasks from helping us in our studies to preparing delicious healthy foods to sculpt us into a better human being.

My brother is an engineering graduate and does a job in a well-known company. He is my best well-wisher and helps me in all ups and downs. My sister is also an engineering graduate and an employee in an IT company. She always finds time to help me with all my difficulties and she is my secret keeper too.

My family is a lifeline to whom I can run to, whatever may be the situation I am facing. My family guides me to be a good person and help me in nurturing good values. We, humans, are animals that live together spreading love and care for each other, and this togetherness is called family. The absence of such a divine bonding make us equal to animals.

Family value and growing in such a caring surrounding helps me to pass all the struggles and hardships that I face in my daily life. Whatever be the situation we are facing, our family will never leave us alone. My family is a blessing for me and I value everyone in my family with equal respect and love.

Most of the people in the world are blessed with having a family. A family, with whom you can share all your joys and sorrows, who is there to guide you through your growing years, who stands by you in the toughest of the situations. I too am blessed to have such a family.

My family is one the most bizarre family in the world. We are four people, my mother, my father, my younger brother and me. While my father is the one who does work for a living, it is my mother who is the boss of the house. My father is a humble person. He is an officer in a government department. My mother is a housewife. It is our mother who takes care of our studies as our father is often busy with his official assignments and even travels for days together. We just miss him when he is not at home.

He never scolds us. But, our mother is just the opposite. She wants us to remain disciplined and we often get scolded by her. However, our father comes to our rescue most of the times. My brother, still in school is the one with whom I love to spend my time the most. Not because I love to play with him, but because, being the elder sister, I enjoy instructing him and showing him who is more powerful at home. He, at a time, seems so helpless when our mother says to obey his sister. I just love that moment. But not all days are the same. I hate having to study all along while he gets to play more than me.

The Atmosphere in my Family:

We largely have a peaceful atmosphere at home. After school, our time is spent on studying, playing and watching television, which of course our mother does not like. Unlike other couples, my mother and father seldom have a fight. In fact, as soon we see an argument brewing up, one of them just withdraws and it is just rare to see a heated conversation between them. This is what I like the most about them as I feel that my parents are so cool. It is only me and brother who love to fight with each other.

However, we know that behind those fights, it is actually our love for each other which binds us together. I just enjoy being at home spending time with my parents and my brother. I just feel how bad it would be when tomorrow I and my brother shall move on for our professional lives and we shall not be able to spend much time together. However, it is the memories of today which shall be with me forever and will bring a smile on my face anytime when I feel low.

The Importance of a Family:

A family is said to be the first school of a child. It is from here you start to learn how to speak, walk and interact with the world. It is important to value the importance of a family in one’s life. At times, people feel that they are grown-ups and that their parent’s advice does not matter anymore, but that is not true. It is the elders of the family who at any given of time would know the world better than us and we should all respect our family members and love our siblings as well. It is the family who builds our character and we should feel fortunate to have a family around us.

Introduction

My family values are what I take so dear to my heart because they have made me what I am today and I plan on passing these great values to my children in future. Every family has those things, acts and values that they hold in high esteem and they cherish so much. These vales have become a part of them: most times, it is what distinguishes the traits in each family and in some ways it makes or mars the future of the family members. Same applies to my family, we have some set values that has become a part of us and it has made my life a lot better because I have become a better person who is not only valuable to himself but also to the society at large. I will be sharing some of these values with you.

My Family Values:

Some of my family values include:

1. Honesty:

This is a principle that is highly protected in my family. My dad has this saying that, “honesty is the best policy.” Ever since I was little, my family has taught me how to be honest and the benefits that lie within. Sometimes, my parents even test us in ways we were not expecting and a reward is given to the person that comes out honest. This is one of my family values that I cherish so much and I am proud that it is what my family hold in high esteem.

2. Kindness to Others:

This is not a common trait to all. My mom has this belief that if the world and everybody in it shows love and kindness to one another, there will be no hatred and wars will be eradicated. This is a family value that we cherish so much. I learnt to show love to everybody. Even when we did not have much, my parents will still give to those who are needy. My dad says that the world is like a river, we would eventually flow into one another later and you do not know the future, the person you helped today might eventually be of help to you tomorrow.

3. Education:

This is a value that has been passed from generation to generation in my family. My dad would say that education is the best legacy you can give to a child. My family does everything in their capacity for you to get a sound and benefitting education. The acquisition of knowledge is also quite important. All of us try to gain more and more knowledge because we all have a family slogan that says “knowledge is power and that power makes me a hero.”

4. Dress and Appearance:

This is a religious value we cherish in my family. My dad would say that you are addressed the way you dress. I do not want to be address wrongly and give out a wrong impression. So, our appearance really matter a lot to us and the way we dress.

Conclusion:

Every family has one thing or the other that they hold in high esteem and tend to pass on from generation to generation. This is what makes a family a united sect not because we are related by blood but because of we share the same values.

Introduction:

Why I love my family is a question that has been floating through my mind for a very long time because no matter how hard I try to pin out a reason why I love them, I just can’t find one. This can be due to fact that they mean the whole world to me and I will do anything for them. I love my family a lot and I would like to share some of the reasons why I love my family and will never trade them for anything.

Why I Love My Family:

I have a family that consists of 6 people: my father, my mother and four children which includes me. For you to understand why I love my family I will tell you a little about each of them and why I love them so much.

My father is the best father in the world: well, that’s what I say. He is a business manager. I look up to my father a lot because I will like to take a lot of his behaviours and make it mine. He taught me to be contented with whatever I have. We did not have much when I was growing up; my dad lost his job and still did not allow anything of the pressure change how he behaved to us at home. He is caring, gentle, accommodating and disciplined.

My mum is the best cook in the world. I do not know where I would be today without my mum. I owe her a lot. She is a teacher by profession and this fascinates me a lot because not only is she inculcating knowledge in the young minds of tomorrow, she is also building the future of our society at large. I want to be like my mum. I remember those times when she had to sacrifice when the most precious of her things just to make me happy. She is loving, caring, understanding, accommodating. In fact, she is everything you can ever wish for in a mother.

My elder sisters are the best. Although they can be frustrating sometimes but that is mostly because of my stubbornness. They pretend they do not really care but deep inside they do. The things they do even subconsciously say otherwise. I remember a day in elementary school, I was being bullied a boy in class. On this particular day, he hit me. Unknowing to me, my sister heard about it and she beat the boy and made him apologise to me, I felt so happy that day because I had someone who had my back.

My brother is one of the best gifts I have received. He is the last child and this gives him an opportunity to be annoying if you know what I mean. He is joyful and always ready to heed correction. There was this day, I heard him bragging to his friends about how awesome I am, and I was the happiest that day.

We all have one reason or the other on why we love our family. I love mine because they are the best gift I could ever ask for and the fact that they have been there for me through the good, bad and funny times.

Importance of family is something that is greatly overlooked and underrated in the world we live in today. The definition that the family had about one hundred years before now was very clear. Back then, a family was believed to be a unit that consisted of the father that was in charge of the finances of the family, a mother whose primary duty was to look after the home and take care of the children and then there were the children. Largely based on the region you are from, a family can also include members of the extended family like aunts, uncles and grandparents. This type of family system is referred to as joint family.

Family Importance:

A family that is important is one that is very strong. If a family is going to be very strong, there is a need for the bond between them to be very strong. Bonds that help in keeping the members of a family with each other are relationships. If there are very strong relationships among all the members of a family, there is going to be stronger commitment between all of them and the family as a unit will be very important.

Better communication is also a result of family relationships that are very strong. If all the family members can take time out to talk and know each other well, the bond between them is bound to be very strong. Even if the conversations are about big things or small things, it does not really matter. The most important thing is that all family members stay connected to one another. It is very important that they all list to each other and understand every member.

How to make Family Bonds Very Strong:

We have various things that can help our family bond to improve.

A few of them include:

1. Love: love is the most important thing we need for our bonds as a family to improve. When we love the members in our family, we will also be able to know all about privacy, intimacy, caring, belonging and sharing. When there is love in a family, the family will prosper.

2. Loyalty: loyalty is something that comes as a result of love. Family members should stay devoted to each other. It is important that we are able to count on our family to have our back anytime we are facing problems.

The importance of family can never be overstated even though we live in a different time now and our attitudes to relationships, marriage and what a family should be has changed. The family is something that we need to help share our problems and be there for us anytime we have issues. A lot of the things that were not acceptable in the past and we now see as normal. Even with all the changes that the society has effected on our family system, the family still remains the major foundation of our society and this will remain the same.

My family is the best gift I have got. A family can be simply said to mean a social group of different people in our society that includes one or more parents and also their children. In a family, every member of the family commits to other members of the family in a mutual relationship. A family is a very important unit and the smallest unit in the society. A family whether a big one or a small one is of very great importance and use to all of its members and is believed to be the unit of our society that is strongest because the society is formed from the coming together and culmination of various families.

In many cultures, the family serves a child’s first school where the child learns all about their traditions and cultures more importantly learn about all the rudimentary values in life. A family is very essential in the teaching of healthy habits and good manners to all the members of the family. It gives the members of the family the opportunity to become people with better character in our society. I feel very lucky to be born into a small and lovely family; I learnt a lot of things from my family.

I am from a middle class and average family with six members (my father, my mother, my grandmother, my grandfather, my younger brother and me). My grandfather is the head of the family and we all respect and listen to him. He is really wise and tries to advise each and every one of us using his many life experiences. He has been involved in many interesting and adventurous activities that he tells me about all the time. Most of the time, he has the final say on all of our family issues and he does his best to make all his decisions impartial.

Any time we are eating today as a family, he sits at the top of the table; we all have designated seats at the dining table. When my brother and I are available, my grandfather teaches us about our traditions and cultures. My grandfather is very friendly and has a cool and great personality and tries to talk nicely and calmly to everyone passing across his message without being rude. He helps my brother and sometimes me with our assignments. He majorly teaches us about all of the tools we need to be successful in life including punctuality, discipline, moral, cleanliness, continuity, honesty, hard work and trustworthiness.

My lovely grandmother is one of the nicest people I know, she tells my brother and I lovely stories every night. My father is a civil engineer and he is very hardworking, sincere and punctual. He is the breadwinner of the family and does his best to provide for every member of the family even if that means he has to work extra hours. My mother is very sweet and takes care of every member of the family even though she works as an accountant at a firm. She wakes up very early in the morning to make preparations for the day. My brother is a funny and jovial person that enjoys sporting activities and I love him so much.

Sometimes I wish my cousins, uncles and aunts lived with us, I love having them around. There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of having everyone around. I have highlighted some below.

Some advantages are:

1. It gives a better routine of living that can contribute to a proper growth.

2. Having a joint family helps in following the numerous principles of an equitable economy and helps teach discipline and respect. It also teaches us how to share the burden of other family members.

3. There is the understanding of having to adjust to the needs of other family members.

4. The children in a large family get to grow up in a happy environment because they have children of their age around that they can play with.

5. All the members of a joint family are usually very disciplined and responsible as everyone has to follow the instructions of the family head.

Some of the disadvantages include:

1. There is always the chance of a rift or fight between the family members because of the possible imbalance of feelings of oneness, brotherly love and feeling of generosity.

2. There is a chance of the members of the family that earn very high looking down on members of the family that do not.

The concept of family is important in India for every individual. Family defines an individual background in terms of social relations and growth. Families influence the lives of individuals from childhood to adulthood especially in decisions concerning life milestones like marriage and career paths. Indian families live together for up to four generations under one roof and they manage to maintain lose family relations compared to other families across the globe. Indian families tend to stick to their cultural practices as a family and they maintain religious practices that cut across the family. Elders in Indian families are respected by the members of the family and their opinions are considered during decision making.

What Family Really Means :

Basic knowledge defines a family as a group of people who share genetic and legal bonds. However, the concept of family means a lot more for other people than just the bond and it incorporates the concepts of culture and religion. In India, the concept of family differs from what the rest of the world perceives as family.

Families in India go beyond nuclear and extend to wider circles, whereby the extended family lives together and are closely related. The relationships in the family are strong such that cousins are considered siblings and aunts and uncles are considered parents. Family also means the unconditional love among the members of the family whereby there is support in terms of finances and emotions.

Why the Family is so important:

The family plays a central role in lives of individuals in teaching of moral values. Parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents have been known to teach the children on morality and disciplinary issue s in most cultures. Both spiritual and moral values are instilled through family. Family give a sense of belonging to individuals because they are over by the family and supported at all times.

A family will always support its members with needs including financial and emotional needs. In a family, there has been established levels of satisfaction and happiness from the joy of being together. Families also helping community development through contributions and participating in activities in the community. The family is important in the society in maintaining order, discipline and peace.

I come from a big family. My family has not moved to an urban area and so we still live as a wider circle together with the extended family. In my nuclear family, I am the first born of four children. I have one sister and two brothers who are still at school. I have three aunts and two uncles. My cousins are twelve in number and most of them are at school except for the youngest ones.

My grandparents are very old and they do not get out of the house much and are being taken care by my parents and aunts. Most of the children are always at school and the house gets quiet but during holiday, we all unite together as a full house. My family is of the middle class in terms of wealth. Our religion is Hindu and we all practice the Indian cultures and traditions. What I love about my family is that everyone is a good cook and the food is always amazing. Members of my family are kind and respectful and that is why we rarely have disputes. The family support is strong and we all love each other.

Why I love My Family:

Having a big family is interesting because the house always feels warm. As I had earlier mentioned, my family is made of good cooks, which makes me love them. There is always teamwork within the family and good relationships are maintained. I like the adventurous nature of my family because we always have fun whenever we go for holiday vacations or have a family event.

Moral cultural and spiritual values are highly cared for in the society. My family is oriented in good moral values and believe we make a good role model for the society. Despite the influence of education, the family has been able to maintain the culture and traditions of Indian people. The love that exists in my family is precious and that is the most important value of all times because what family without love?

Our Weekend Outings and House Parties:

We do not have many of these in our family because of the different schedules among the members. We only have weekend outings and house parties during holidays. Birthday parties are and weddings are the parties that we frequently have as a family. I love parties at home because the food is usually exceptionally good. Also, the dancing and happy faces. Weekend outings are usually in form of picnics and they are usually full of games.

Cousins Visit during Summer:

My family is young and only three of my cousins are in college. The rest are in high school or elementary schools. Whenever my cousins come home from school, it is a happy moment for the whole family and we host parties to welcome them home. Whenever my older cousins are at home, I enjoy their company and I love to hear stories about college because that is where I will be in a few years’ time.

In the spirit of holidays, we have a vacation or two in a year. During these vacations, plans begin early and when the time comes, it is enjoyable and relaxing. Vacations for us as children tend to be more enjoyable because we have an environment away from home and with minimal parental supervision and we tend to explore and talk among ourselves. Team building during vacations strengthens the bond in families.

Family is a blessing to individuals because that is where they belong and it is what defines them. A good family is built through moral values and team effort. Having family events and parties or vacations re important is strengthening the relationships within a family. A happy individual is definitely from a happy family.

Understanding the Purpose

To write a remarkable childhood event essay, it is crucial to comprehend the purpose behind it. Such an essay aims to transport your audience back in time and allow them to experience a cherished memory from your childhood. It should evoke emotions, showcase your unique perspective, and provide insight into your personal growth.

Choosing the Right Topic

The topic you select for your childhood event essay plays a vital role in captivating your readers. Opt for an event that holds deep significance and impacted you in a profound way. Consider events that shaped your character, influenced your values, or initiated a change in your life. Some examples could be a family vacation, a school performance, a special birthday celebration, or an encounter that taught you an important life lesson.

Creating an Engaging Introduction

The introduction sets the stage for your childhood event essay. It should immediately grab your readers' attention and entice them to continue reading. Begin with a hook that sparks curiosity or emotion. Use descriptive language to paint a vivid picture and transport your audience to the time and place of the event. Introduce the main characters involved and provide a brief overview of what to expect in the essay.

Developing the Body

The body of your essay should delve deep into the details of the childhood event, providing a rich and comprehensive account. Use descriptive language to create a sensory experience for your readers. Include specific sensory details such as sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures to make the event come alive.

Identify Key Moments

Break down your childhood event into key moments or milestones. Each key moment should be a separate paragraph, focusing on the specific details and emotions associated with that moment. This helps to structure your essay effectively and allows for a smooth flow of storytelling.

Show, Don't Tell

Avoid simply stating facts; instead, show the readers what happened through vivid descriptions and engaging storytelling. Use dialogue, action, and reflection to bring depth and authenticity to your essay. By immersing your audience in the experience, you create a connection that keeps them engaged.

Reflect and Analyze

Take the opportunity to reflect on the significance of the childhood event in your life. Share any insights or lessons learned from the experience. This reflection adds a personal touch and allows your readers to gain a deeper understanding of who you are as an individual.

Crafting a Memorable Conclusion

The conclusion provides closure to your childhood event essay. Summarize the key points discussed in the body, reinforcing the impact of the event on your life. Leave your readers with a lasting impression or a thought-provoking question that encourages further contemplation.

When you grow up in a family-focused environment, you learn some valuable lessons. You learn the importance of being humble, take responsibility for your actions, share kind words and be a part of a team. You also learn to read people—by watching how other family members interact and discuss topics, you come to understand the different personalities and what makes each person who they are.

Families can be big or small— they serve as the cornerstones of our stability, supporting us so that we can grow into better persons. They're the ones you can rely on when times are tough. They make you feel loved and supported, no matter what. Family is also a source of comfort. They're the ones you can turn to when you need a friend, someone to listen to your problems or just someone to make you laugh.

Most importantly, family is a connection to our past. They're the people who have been with us through thick and thin, good times and bad. Nothing compares to the comfort of a mother's hug or the joy of a father's pat on the back. Although we argue the most with our siblings, they always rush to our aid when we find ourselves in difficulties.

Family is important because they are our foundation, our support system, and our connection to the past. They make us who we are, and we wouldn't be the same without them.

Here are some ideas to stay connected with your family members:

Take a walk together

Play a board game

Make a meal together

Watch a movie or TV show

Go for a drive

Family members provide support, advice and unconditional love to each other. They help each other out when times are hard, which teaches you resilience and provides a safe cocoon within which to grow. From this kind of familial bonding, respect and appreciation emerge — an understanding that every one of us comes from the same source, with unique strengths and weaknesses, but all tied together as one unit. Growing up in a family-focused lifestyle can bring many benefits – it’s just up to us to take advantage of them and make the most out of it.

Importance Of Staying Connected

No matter what your family looks like, or how you're related to one another, there are plenty of creative ways to stay connected. You could call each other every day, or even just once a week. You could make a regular date to get together, or just hang out when the mood strikes. The important thing is that you make an effort to connect regularly. This not only strengthens your familial bonds, but it also provides a sense of stability and continuity that can be helpful during difficult times.

Challenges For Families

It is also important to recognise that families can experience challenges. Difficult events, such as death, divorce, illness and financial strain can affect a family’s dynamic. Your family may need to pull together and work through these challenges in order to make it through them. This could mean more frequent communication and more supportive behaviour from each family member. There may also need to be changes made to the family’s daily routine in order to manage disappointments or make time for any additional tasks that come up suddenly.

Conflicts Within Family

It is natural for families to experience conflict, but it is important that this conflict is managed in a healthy manner. This means not engaging in name-calling or physical aggression, but rather communicating openly with everyone involved in the disagreement. If necessary, the family could even seek out external support or other guidance from an outside source. In any case, it is important for each member of the family to remember that they all have each other’s best interests at heart. Having one-on-one time with your family is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and feelings about your loved ones. Regardless of your feelings about them, your family is an important part of your life.

I come from a family of four— my parents, my brother, and me. My father is a hardworking man who has always been patient and understanding. Growing up, I could count on him to be there when I needed him, whether it was to help with school or just provide advice. My mother is incredibly supportive and encouraging. She loves to spend time with her family and has always been our biggest cheerleader. My brother and I are very close—we were both lucky to be raised by two loving parents. We constantly share our experiences with each other, helping us navigate life together as siblings. We have many similar interests, like playing games and going on hikes together whenever we get the chance. I am thankful for having such an amazing family in my life.

Describe a Happy Family Event Like This Dance

essay about a family event

It’s not easy for students to describe a family event.  It seems like it would be easy, but it’s not.  This is a lesson to help them do so!

*This post contains affiliate links.  For more information, see my disclosures here .*

I came across the book Dance at Grandpa’s*  by Laura Ingalls Wilder somewhere, somehow.  It’s in my library of children’s books here at home.  When I actually took time to read it, I was so impressed with how descriptive the story was about a family event.

describe a family event-dance at grandpas

I wanted to give my campers an opportunity to describe a family event of their own.  Since the event in the story took place during the winter, I decided to teach this lesson in the winter as well.

Common Core State Standards

NOTE: This writing prompt can address the following Common Core State Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.3, W.1.3, W.2.3, W.3.3., W.3.3.C, W.3.3.D, W.4.3, W.4.3.A, W.4.3.C, W.4.3.D, W.4.3.D, W.5.3, W.5.3.A, W.5.3.C, W.5.3.D and W.5.3.E.

NOW THE LESSON!

To get a full understanding on how I conduct each writing lesson you may want to read the Writing Prompts Introduction post.  The lesson outlined below (and all other prompts posted) will make more sense and be easier to follow and use.  Here’s the lined paper I use for  Grades K-2  and  Grades 2-7

Tell the Story Line

  • First tell the story line:  “You’re going to describe in detail a special family event that you enjoy.  You’ll describe the location, people, food, activities and actions.”

2.  Second, have the children brainstorm family events that they have experienced.  Examples include:

A Christmas party, Grandma’s birthday, a baby shower, a cousin’s graduation, a pool party, baptism, 1 st communion, bar or bat mitzvah  etc.

Give the students time to think of a family event.

Read the Book

3.  Third, read the book, Dance At Grandpa’s to the group.  Point out descriptions as you read them (the weather, location, people, activities, foods, sounds actions etc.)

Show the 5 Sections

Event Location

People’s Actions

Ending/Thoughts

As mentioned in my writing prompts introduction:   K-1 st Graders are encouraged to write 1 sentence for each section, 2 nd Graders 2 sentences, 3 rd Graders 3 sentences and so on.

NOW TO WRITE!

Guide the students through the following steps so their description is organized.  (I’ve written examples in italics just for your own guidance.)

Event and Location

  • Name the event and location.

Every Thanksgiving, my family and I go to my grandma’s house.

  • Second, describe the location.

She lives in the country in Indiana.  The land is flat with huge corn fields.  There are big red barns.

 People’s Actions

  • Third, describe the people’s actions.

My grandma, mom and aunt stay in the kitchen to cook the food.  They don’t let any kids in the kitchen!  My cousins and I play outside until the food is ready.  One year it snowed so much!  So, my oldest cousin brought his snow mobile.

  • Fourth, describe the food.

The food smells so good while we play.  The turkey is always huge.  My grandma makes the best mashed potatoes with lots of butter and salt.

  • Fifth, describe the activities.

After we eat, my uncles sit on the couches and watch football.  They fall asleep and snore really loudly.  The women all go for a walk.  Then, we play board games.

  • Describe the ending. Write your thoughts or feelings.

In the evening, we get all the food out again.  We eat one more time.  We play one more game.  I love Thanksgiving with my family so much!

Print the Lesson

Here’s the full lesson for you to print out and use.

EASY ART ACCENTS

As soon as the students finish their story, they can work on their art accent .  If their family invent indeed takes/took place in the winter, they can add a winter snow art accent to their border.

Family Life: Events Leading to Its Beginning Essay

Introduction, events leading to the beginning of family life.

Families are responsible for bringing up children until the time they will be able to start their own families. As they grow up, many changes take place in their life, physically, emotionally, psychologically and even financially, in preparation to begin new families.

The events are sequential and skipping one of them may be reverberated later in life, although it does not mean that one cannot improve and mend the outcomes of the skipped stages. Every stage is vital and it is important to go through all the stages if possible. This essay discusses the sequence of events that finally lead to beginning of family life.

Everyone has a family of origin, and each family is unique with unique experiences and lifestyles. The first stage thus is living in the family of origin with all the rules and regulations, and complying with them. Majority at this stage are still under taking or completing their schooling.

The major tasks here are “maintaining relationships with parents, siblings and peers…involves developing the foundations of a model of family life” (Carter & McGoldrick, 1999, p.67). This is an important stage since it defines what one will be in the future family. Many do not know that there are being prepared to bring up their families. Research has shown that people who come from happy families build happy families and vice versa, although there are always exceptional cases which violate the aforementioned rule.

The next stage is leaving home. The single young grown-up develops more close associations with peers and adult-to-adult relations with parents than earlier on. Emotionally, this person accepts his or her personal financial and emotional responsibilities and separates him or herself from the family of origin.

One becomes self-reliant in relation to employment and economic independence. This individual can make decisions without involving the parent. One gets the opportunity to interact with many people at friendship levels. Majority of friendships established here move on to the future, and often times one of the friends becomes the future marriage partner.

Pre-marriage stage then follows. The individual is engaged in looking for and selecting a marriage partner. He or she establishes a relationship, which would lead to marriage later on. It is at this stage that one may decide to establish own home with someone (Carter & McGoldrick, 1999, p.72).

The duration that this stage takes depends on the individuals, their cultural background, and the era in which they are living. These two friends become acquainted to one another and develop strong bonds. A desire to get married, company and having children contributes to moving towards establishing a family.

The next stage is marriage, which marks the beginning of family life. The couple major in “developing a way to live together both practically and emotionally, adjusting relationships with families of origin and peers to include partner” (Carter & McGoldrick, 1999, p.75). It is then after this that they bear children and the family becomes complete and full family life starts.

In conclusion, the sequences of events that lead to beginning of family life begin at a very tender age, by how ones parents bring him/her up. Separation from the family and establishing oneself both emotionally and financially follows.

The evidence of this is the physical separation from one family to live alone or away from the original family, where one makes closer and more intimate relationships with peers. Getting a marriage partner and being acquainted to one another brings the sequence close to the end. Marriage marks the climax of the preparation and the beginning of family life.
