Essay on my Hobby : My Hobby is Gardening

I belong to a farmer’s family. After settling down in the metro cities, I have noticed my family craving to spare their time for Mother Nature. Having a family background with an ample number of agricultural jobholders, I decided to devise a small garden of my own. Earlier in my penthouse, I decided to create a small rooftop garden due to lack of space. This is how gardening helped me release the amplitude amount of endorphins in my whole family after a stressful day. Gardening is the most accessible and manageable task for a human being. All it requires is enough motivation for a better yield. It is a decampment towards the serenity and beauty of nature with loads of unadulterated indulgence. Gardening has always helped me look towards a better future. It has maintained me to stay submerged with my fondness for plants and blossoms. It is a  form of recreational activity after my school hours. Springing from botanical gardens to every miniature backyard, I have visited all of them. Attending several gardens motivates me to produce a surplus of plants in my garden.

What do I do for my hobby gardening?

Gardening can be done on several types of soil and with numerous varieties of yield. Gardening can be of many types such as herb, flowers, vegetables or kitchen, rose, rock, water, and indoor gardening. According to the needs and availability of tools and garden supplies suited for the purpose, we choose the respective criteria.

Soil is the most important trait for gardening. It requires the accurate level of manure and water to flourish and drop off blooming yield. Soil is a requirement because it constitutes a certain amount of organisms that help in the conversion of plant nutrients from the putrefied subject. To harvest a beautiful garden, healthy soil is the most important necessity. In my rooftop gardens, I have utilized an inadequate amount of space to grow flowering plants and a few creepers and climbers for my mother’s kitchen. Gardening requires an ample amount of attention and time. Starting from the preparation of the soil to the composting till the blossoms are achieved, everything requires dedication. In the beginning, I started with a proper layout for an inadequate stretch. Then I had to pick among the favored and accessible varieties to start with. Obtaining good seeded plants and accessible supplies available at my home, I started my gardening tenure. To help my mom’s kitchen I even planted a few vegetable seeds such as bitter gourd, lemon, chilies, tomatoes, and a few leafy vegetables. I affirmed to keep my plants away from the weeds and pests. I took assistance from my uncle with organic manures and compost to get a better yield and prettier blossoms for every morning to wake up to. I have used unused plastic bottles to grow creepers and a few flowering and herb plants to create an aesthetic outlook for my garden. Plants such as basil, money plants, rosemary, spinach, and much more hanging houseleeks were grown from the waste bottles. The proper amount of sun and shade are required as it may inhibit adequate plant growth. Butterflies, honey bees, flower beetles are a regular visitor to my garden. A few of my houseplants are ferns, dracaena, philodendron, and aglaonema. The vegetables I have grown are placed in a sunny spot, and there’s an ample amount of water supply adjacent to it. These vegetables are used in our kitchen daily.

January 21, 2021 by Sandeep

My Garden Essay: The most beautiful place in every house is undoubtedly the garden area. It is filled with greenery and flowering plants. Gardens are full of oxygen providers and have colourful blooms of plant varieties. They refresh a person’s mind and help him lead a peaceful life. Gardens are popular places for beautiful roses, sunflowers, daisies, pansies and lilies. They look fresh and fragrant when watered and groomed regularly.

Essay on My Garden 250 Words in English

Below we have provided My Garden Essay in English, suitable for class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6.

The garden that surrounds my house is my favourite place to be. It is peaceful and helps me calm down when life becomes too much to handle. Having a garden, spending time in it and taking care of it have many benefits for everyone regardless of age or experience. It makes you feel proud of yourself for taking care of something so well; it reduces stress and gives you the chance to grow your fruits and vegetables.

My garden doesn’t look large from the outside, but you realize that there are much more plants than you thought when you’re inside. My garden has large trees, shrubs, herbs and gorgeous flowers . My favourite tree is the sapota tree, otherwise known as the chikoo tree. This is because when the sun sets in the evening, its rays filter through the leaves of the sapota tree, and the view is absolutely beautiful.

There is a path that runs throughout the garden and around the house. It is made of different materials at different points. I find this unique, and I think it adds character and makes the garden more special. The most important aspect of the garden is that it is entirely designed by my grandparents . They wanted to make the house feel more cosy and homely and decided that the best way to do that would be to have a garden all around where people could go if they felt sad.

We don’t have a professional gardener to help take care of it. The family does all the work such as watering the plants, weeding the garden and keeping away pesky insects and animals. We pluck the sapota fruit very regularly. We also make sure that the part of the tree that leans over the fence isn’t chewed off my cows or subject to stealing by other naughty children.

Long and Short Essay on My Garden in English

My garden essay 1 (200 words).

My Garden is my favourite part of my house. I can spend hours in my garden without getting bored. It makes me come alive and I just love that feeling.

It is my mother who maintains the garden at our place just as she takes care of various other household chores. She is a huge nature lover and it was her idea to build a beautiful garden at home even though there isn’t a lot of space here. Most of the people in our neighbourhood have converted this place in their house into car parking area or have covered the place to build a small room. But my mother chose to convert this small piece of land into a lovely garden.

Our garden is full of colourful flowers. We have a row of roses on one side and a row of seasonal flowers on the other side. These flowers include marigold, petunia, pansy, hollyhock, aster, alyssum, hibiscus, sunflowers and lilies. It is extremely delightful to see these flowers blooming. My mother ensures that the plants get water and manure regularly so that they grow and bloom the way they should. I also help my mother with these activities.

I am thankful to my mother for giving me such a beautiful place to sit and rejoice nature.

My Garden Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

My garden is full of aromatic herbs. My grandfather loves gardening and I love helping him with this activity. We have grown numerous types of plants in our garden. Most of these are herbs such as aloe vera, basil, mint, coriander, curry plant and lemon grass. This helps in two ways. It adds to the beauty of the house and also provides natural herbs that offer so many health benefits.

My Morning Begins Here

My morning begins in my garden. As I wake up, the first thing I do is to head straight to my garden. It is the best way to begin my day. I just love the essence of this place. My grandfather is already seated on the small bench we have placed there. I go and sit right next to him. I practice deep breathing for around 15 minutes and then have a look at the various plants around the garden. The sight is extremely refreshing. I begin with my daily tasks only after spending around half an hour in my garden.

The Best Way to Spend My Evening

I often go out with my friends in the evening after my tuition classes. It gives me respite after a long day at school and coaching institute. We go to the nearby market to have some evening snacks and chit chat for a while before heading home. While I do look forward to this time every day, I love spending the evening hours in my garden all the more. Many a times, I call my friends to my place. We sit in the garden while my mother serves hot soup and snacks. For me, it is simply the best way to spend the evening hours.

My garden is an integral part of my life. This place can uplift my mood in fraction of seconds. I help my grandfather take care of my garden.

My Garden Essay 3 (400 words)

I just love nature. Hills, valleys, sunsets, sea, plants, trees and flowers – I love everything that is natural and organic. Every time we visit a hill station, I feel like staying there forever. It gets difficult for me to return as I feel so attached to the very essence of the places where nature can be seen in its pure, unadulterated form.

My Garden – My Idea

While I cannot bring along hills and valleys back home, I can certainly feel the enchanting smell of the flowers and plants by growing some at my place. As we were coming back from our trip to Assam, I was missing the lush green tea gardens and the beautiful flowers in the botanical garden there. It was like I had left my heart there. It was then that the idea of growing my own garden sprang in my mind. I spoke about it to my sister and she was equally thrilled.

Since we live in a flat, we did not have a proper area that could be turned into a garden. However, we could certainly fill one of our balconies with different types of flowers and feel their aroma fill in our house.

We spoke about the idea with our parents and they agreed to it on the condition that we will have to take care of the entire thing on our own.

Our Visit to the Nursery

On the weekend that followed, I and my sister visited the nearby nursery. There were numerous flowers out there and it was difficult to choose a few among them. It took almost 2 hours to choose the plants we wanted to get home. Among the flowering plants we choose rose, marigold, pansy and aster. Besides, we also brought home areca palm, spider plant, aloe vera, basil and asparagus. The nursery in-charge told us ways to take care of different plants so that they remain green for long.

We handpicked the plant pots. Most of them were white coloured plastic pots of the same size. We called home a gardener to place all the plants in the pots. Once this was done, we arranged the pots strategically so that the entire balcony was evenly covered with them. It looked beautiful.

We visit the nursery quite often to pick more plants to add to our collection. Seasonal flowers do not last long and we love picking different plants to fill their place.

I personally take care of each and every plant grown in my garden. Our balcony turned garden is extremely beautiful and we often receive compliments for the same from our neighbours and friends.

My Garden Essay 4 (500 words)

I always wanted to grow a garden at my place but it did not seem possible as we lived in a small flat in Delhi. There was a beautiful garden at my friend, Riya’s place and I wished we had one too every time I saw it. My prayers were soon heard and we shifted to my father’s home town, Chandigarh. The house here was big and there was enough space that could be turned into a garden.

Hiring a Professional Gardener

Luckily for me, my mother is as fond of plants and flowers as me. Thus, I did not have to convince her to grow a garden she too wanted to do it. After we got settled in the new place, we decided to shape the barren piece of land at our place into a garden. Since, the house had been vacant since years the soil in the garden was not good enough to grow grass and plants immediately.

So, my mother decided to hire a professional gardener. He worked on the soil for about a week during which he watered it regularly, used different tools to dig it and poured manure. Soon after, he planted grass and a few plants. We were delighted to see our little garden blooming.

Growing the Garden

I and my mother decided to visit the nursery to buy different plants for our garden. It was summer season and the nursery was blooming with pink and white lilies, colourful hibiscus, roses, pansies, sunflowers and bougainvillea. We loved them all and it was extremely difficult to choose among them. After mulling for over an hour, we finally choose a few saplings of hibiscus, bougainvillea, lilies and roses.

The saplings we brought were planted strategically in different parts of the garden. The bougainvillea being a climber was planted near the fence. Within a month it climbed the fence and spread over it. The beautiful bunches of pink flowers that grew on it were a visual treat. We decided to plant similar flowers together. So the roses were planted in one corner. A row of lilies was set close by and hibiscus plants were planted at the other corner of the garden. It all looked extremely beautiful. The plants soon found their roots in the garden and small buds began to spout. Each time I saw a bud, I got extremely thrilled. Our garden was soon blossoming with flowers. It has been 3 years now and my garden is filled with a variety of flowers and leafy plants. We keep bringing different types of flowers from time to time. However, roses, lilies and bougainvillea can always be found in my garden. We have also added a row of basil. The aroma of basil is quite soothing. We also use it in our kitchen quite frequently.

We still have the same professional gardener who works with dedication and takes care of my garden very well.

It is quite amazing to have a garden at home. I am thankful that we shifted to a city like Chandigarh where I could have the luxury of growing a garden.

However, roses, lilies and bougainvillea can always be found in my garden. We have also added a row of basil. The aroma of basil is quite soothing. We also use it in our kitchen quite frequently.

We still have the same professional gardener who works with dedication and takes care of my garden very well.

(Or you can start one yourself.) If this is too much, at least use it as a starting point to talk about composting and how it works.

18. Start a monarch awareness campaign.

Classroom Gardening Ideas for Hands-on Learning

Monarchs need milkweed in order to survive, and the overall numbers (of milkweed and monarchs) are on the decline. You can talk to students about why monarchs need milkweed (it’s their host plant) and even establish your own monarch habitat at your school as part of your gardening efforts. Another idea is to just create an awareness campaign about the importance of gardening for monarchs. You can get milkweed seed and send it home with kids or hand it out to those able to plant.

We Regulate a Tiny Fraction of the 12,000 ‘Forever Chemicals.’ There’s a Better Way.

A black and white photograph of a hand holding a jar of water with sunlight shining through it.

By Kathleen Blackburn

Dr. Blackburn teaches creative nonfiction writing at the University of Chicago.

When I was 12 years old, I sat inside a raucous tent revival in West Texas, gripping my seat in fear that a traveling evangelist would accuse me of killing my father.

A healthy former Air Force pilot who’d averaged an eight-minute mile in the New York City Marathon, my father had just been diagnosed with advanced colorectal cancer and been given a short time to live. Nothing about his predicament made sense to our family at the time. He was 38, a nonsmoker and nondrinker, with no history of cancer in his family.

My parents were conservative evangelicals deeply skeptical of the medical industry, and his diagnosis kicked their beliefs into high gear. When doctors couldn’t answer our questions — Why did Dad have cancer? What could we do? — we sought out faith healers who did. Traveling evangelists and local preachers claimed that the cancer was, in fact, a satanic attack. This gave us a way out: We simply had to muster enough faith to believe a miracle was possible and God would heal him.

What no one in my family knew at the time was that for most of his life my father had been exposed to perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, the synthetic compounds known collectively as PFAS, which have been linked to increased risk of certain cancers . His fallow muscle, jaundiced skin and weight loss were very likely because of the decades-long accumulation of carcinogenic chemicals in the drinking water at the military sites where he had lived and worked since his childhood.

The environmental violence exacted by PFAS, like the effects of radiation and polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, can be difficult to prove. Only a few studies have examined the relationship between PFAS exposure and colorectal cancer (though the Yale School of Public Health has estimated that around 80 percent of cases are linked to environmental exposure). But on April 10 the Environmental Protection Agency announced the first federal mandate to limit the level of six PFAS in tap water. Going forward, water systems where they are detected will be required to remove them. Michael Regan, the E.P.A. administrator, called the announcement “life-changing,” and for me it was — it validated what I’d long suspected, that exposure to these chemicals can be devastating.

But if six PFAS sounds like a small number, that’s because it is. At this point, more than 12,000 formulations of PFAS exist and only a fifth of Americans’ PFAS exposure comes from drinking water. That means additional PFAS that have not been targeted for regulation persist in our water, soil and consumer products, leaving many Americans vulnerable to exposure. To reduce the risk they pose, we need far more comprehensive mandates that test, monitor and limit the entire class of PFAS chemicals.

In the 1930s and ’40s, manufacturing companies like DuPont and 3M began developing these substances for use as repellent in nonstick items including Teflon pans, Scotchgard and firefighting foams. But the chemical bonds that make them so useful as a repellent also make PFAS nearly indestructible; it’s why they have been labeled “forever chemicals.” They don’t break down once they enter the environment, and instead they accumulate in water, soil and our bodies.

Firefighting foams have been a major source of PFAS contamination since their development in the 1960s. In collaboration with the U.S. Navy, 3M produced foams that the Defense Department sprayed in routine fire drills and emergencies around the country. The chemicals eventually leached into groundwater at military sites like the ones where my father lived and water sources surrounding them. In 2000, 3M began phasing out its use of perfluorooctanyl sulfonate, a component of PFAS-containing firefighting foam, citing health concerns. Still, it was not until 2023 that the Department of Defense was banned from purchasing foams containing PFAS.

The E.P.A.’s move this month to regulate PFAS is a significant next step, but even in places where the groundwater is not highly contaminated, we will all still be exposed to unregulated PFAS without further government action. The chemicals are used in a staggering number of consumer products, including carpet, pizza boxes, microwave popcorn, yoga pants, bags and toiletries like dental floss, shampoo and cosmetics. They are still key ingredients in some firefighting foams; many fire departments still use these foams in emergencies like chemical plant fires. And in Texas, thousands of pounds of PFAS are being shot into the ground to lubricate drill bits for fracking.

We already know that high levels of exposure to PFAS have been linked to disastrous health impacts like birth defects, liver damage and many kinds of cancer. Yet the rate at which PFAS are being released into the environment far outpaces toxicologists’ ability to study their consequences for human health. Some 31 percent of groundwater samples in places with no known source of PFAS have shown contamination levels that exceed E.P.A. limits. And in some locations with established sources, like military and industrial sites, the levels of PFAS are far higher than the standard set by the new rule.

We now need a federal ban on firefighting foams containing PFAS and regulations that are enforceable by law to limit not just specific compounds in our water, but the whole class of highly pervasive chemicals. Mandates should identify the historical sources of pollution to hold industries accountable and avoid further straining the communities exposed to PFAS with the additional cost of their cleanup. On Friday, the E.P.A. helpfully put two PFAS compounds under its Superfund authority, shifting accountability for cleanup from taxpayers to polluters.

I am now 39, the age my father was when he died from cancer in 1998. Nearly 20 years passed before I discovered that the Defense Department is responsible for a significant portion of the PFAS pollution in the United States and that dangerously high levels of PFAS have been confirmed or are suspected of contaminating the drinking water at military sites from Guam to Universal City, Texas, including where my father had lived as a child and worked as an Air Force officer. My father was no longer an officer when he was diagnosed, but the reality of PFAS exposure shows that we carry the traces of each place we’ve lived even after we’ve left.

This month’s federal announcement cannot resurrect the dead. Still, it gives context to tragedies that made no sense at the time and sent my family into a desperate search for a miracle that never came.

I would never wish such a revelation on my 2-year-old son’s generation. I would not have them blindly searching for answers that first manifest, as so often quests through oblivion do, in blaming oneself. This is exactly what companies like 3M and DuPont hope will continue happening — that those of us who were first exposed will still bear the burden of proof.

We should not have to risk repeated exposure to these substances, with the most powerful bonds in organic chemistry, caused by the willful negligence of industry each time we place our faith in a glass of water. Let’s not wait for more long-term effects on our health before we act.
