Dissertations and Theses

The dissertation is the hallmark of the research expertise demonstrated by a doctoral student. It is a scholarly contribution to knowledge in the student’s area of specialization. By researching and writing a dissertation, the student is expected to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and the capability to function as an independent scholar.

A thesis is a hallmark of some master’s programs. It is a piece of original research, generally less comprehensive than a dissertation, and is meant to show the student’s knowledge of an area of specialization.

Document Preparation

PhD and master’s students are responsible for meeting all requirements for preparing theses and dissertations. They are expected to confer with their advisors about disciplinary and program expectations and to follow Graduate School procedure requirements.

The Graduate School’s format review is in place to help the document submission process go smoothly for the student. Format reviews for PhD dissertations and master’s theses can be done remotely or in-person. The format review is required at or before the two-week notice of the final defense.

Access and Distribution

Ohio State has agreements with two organizations— OhioLINK   and   ProQuest/UMI Dissertation Publishing —that store and provide access to Ohio State theses and dissertations.

Examinations

Graduate degree examinations are a major milestone in all graduate students’ pursuit of their graduate degree. Much hinges on the successful completion of these examinations, including the ability to continue in a graduate program.

The rules and processes set by the Graduate School ensure the integrity of these examinations for graduate students, the graduate faculty, and for Ohio State.

Final Semester

During your final semester as a graduate student there are many activities that lead up to commencement and receiving your degree. Complete the final semester checklist and learn more about commencement activities.

Physics ph.d. candidate wins 2024 three minute thesis competition.

Meagan Sundstrom speaks after being named first place winner

“I want you to remember a time when you were in a setting where you felt like you didn’t belong. I want you to remember how you felt in that setting, maybe isolated or out of place, and how much you felt like you wanted to continue going back to that setting—probably not much. These feelings are all too familiar for undergraduate women pursuing their studies in science, and in physics specifically,” began Meagan Sundstrom, a doctoral candidate in physics at the ninth annual Cornell University Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.

Alongside seven other finalists, Sundstrom presented her dissertation research in just three minutes on March 20 to a panel of judges and an audience from across campus while additional friends, family, advisors, and lab mates watched online. In the first in-person Cornell 3MT since 2019, presentations were judged by how clearly and compellingly students summarized their research to a general audience, using only one static slide.

Sundstrom’s presentation, “Recognizing and Removing Barriers for Women in Physics,” earned her first place and $1,500. Second place and $1,000 was awarded to information science doctoral student Sterling Williams-Ceci for her presentation, “AI Helps us Write – but at What Cost?”

After nearly 60 in-person and 70 virtual audience members cast their ballots, votes were tallied and the People’s Choice Award and $250 were presented to biomedical and biological sciences doctoral candidate Sharada Gopal for her presentation, “Worming Our Way to a Longer Life.”

This year’s judges included Jane Bunker, director of Cornell University Press; Joe Ellis, director of online degree program development at eCornell; David Lodge, the Francis J. DiSalvo Director of the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability; and Bob Riter, patient advocate for the Cornell Community Cancer Partnership. Organization of the competition and coaching of presenters was provided by the Graduate School Office of Career and Professional Development.

“As grad students, there are a lot of opportunities to give your elevator pitch at conferences and more professional settings to more senior people in your field, and I thought this would be a really cool opportunity for me to try to tailor that pitch to a more general audience—how would I describe my research to my family and friends?—so that was fun,” said Sundstrom.

Being able to “zoom out” and view her topic from a different perspective was also helpful for Sundstrom, who is currently writing her dissertation and appreciates having both formulated a storyline and thought about the broader impacts of her work.

Williams-Ceci similarly enjoyed the chance to speak to a different type of audience than she is used to addressing.

“I hadn’t really had an opportunity in grad school to try communicating to a broad audience, it’s always just to my lab, so I wanted to practice having a chance to really tell a story and not just go through the slides,” she said. “It really helped me know for a fact that I can tell a convincing story about a project that I’ve done.”

2024 Three Minute Thesis finalists

Gopal shared that the 3MT was a fun way to combine her longtime artistic interests with her science.

“It seemed like such a fun event. I did a lot of theatre in college so I thought, ‘What can I do artistically here?’ and this seemed like a good mix of my scientific interest and my artistic theatre interests,” she said, adding that she also benefitted from looking at the bigger picture of her work and its impacts.

The 3MT competition was first held in 2008 at the University of Queensland and has since been adopted by over 900 universities in over 85 countries. 3MT challenges research degree students to present a compelling story on their dissertation or thesis and its significance in just three minutes, in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

Cornell’s Graduate School first hosted a 3MT competition in 2015 and the event has grown steadily since that time. As the winner of Cornell’s competition, Sundstrom will now go on to compete in northeast regional competitions.

“Our Three Minute Thesis final round is a highlight of the year for those of us in the Graduate School—literally we talk about it all year long,” said Kathryn J. Boor, dean of the Graduate School and vice provost for graduate education. “We look forward to it because it’s just plain fun, and it’s an opportunity for us to watch and learn from our accomplished and creative graduate researchers.”

“I could not possibly be more proud of the work we saw,” she said.

How To Write A Bachelor/Master Thesis [2024]

Student schreibt Bachelor Arbeit

It's that time of year again when students are wrapping up their final semester and beginning to write their dissertation. In Germany, students must adhere to some particular formatting standards while writing their Bachelor's or Master's thesis.

The dissertation is a crucial component of all German higher education programs. Students may use it to demonstrate their understanding and abilities in a given field of study. The thesis also plays a crucial role in helping students develop critical thinking and research skills. They are a valuable preparation for future career opportunities.

In this article, we'll go through everything you must do to write a successful thesis. We will also provide tips and tricks to stay organized and on track throughout the process!

Thesis writing process

Bachelor’s thesis vs. Master’s thesis

A Bachelor's and a Master's thesis are two types of academic papers. A Bachelor's thesis is usually shorter and is meant to show that the student has learned the basics of the subject. In contrast, a Master's thesis is more extended and more in-depth. It should serve as evidence that the student has mastered their chosen subject.

How to format your Bachelor's or Master's thesis in Germany

The following are some of the most critical format requirements in any thesis:

Note:  Depending on the university and the "style" of the student's thesis, the formatting requirements might vary (e.g., Harvard or APA). Be sure to check with your supervisor or department for specific guidelines.

  • Margins:  Your thesis must have 1-inch margins on all sides.
  • Spacing:  The text must be double-spaced.
  • Fonts:  Subtitles must be in a 14-point typeface. The text's main body should be in 12-point font, subheadings in a 14-point typeface, and title headings in a 16-point typeface.
  • Length:  A Bachelor's thesis should be around 60 pages, while a Master's thesis should be about 80 pages.
  • Language:  Your thesis must be written in German or English, depending on your program.

Let's take a look at each thesis component, starting with the Title page. The following are the required sections for both Bachelor's and Master's thesis.

Title page

The title page of your thesis must include the following information:

  • The title of your thesis
  • The name of your supervisor
  • The name of your program

The abstract is a summary of your thesis. It should be a maximum of one page long and include the following information:

  • Your research questions

Table of contents

The table of contents must list all of the sections and subsections of your thesis.

  • List of figures:   The figures must include all the figures used in your thesis.
  • List of tables:   The list of tables must consist of all of the tables used in your thesis.

Introduction

The introduction should explain the context of your research and the problem you are trying to solve. A Bachelor's thesis should be around three pages, while a Master's thesis should be about five pages .

Literature review

The literature review critically analyzes the existing research on your topic. The literature review is an essential part of any research paper.

It helps you situate your research within the context of existing scholarship and allows you to critically evaluate the existing research on your topic. It is essential to be as critical as possible when reviewing the literature.  It would be best if you addressed questions such as:

  • What are the limitations of the existing research?
  • What gaps does the current research leave open?
  • How can my research contribute to the current body of scholarship?

Methodology

The methodology section explains the research methods you used to collect data for your thesis. This information is crucial because it allows the reader to understand how you gathered your data and what conclusions you drew from it. It is also essential to be transparent when describing your research methods so the reader can evaluate them critically.

Results & Discussion

Result and discussion : The results section presents the data you collected during your research. The discussion section is where you interpret the data and discuss the implications of your findings.

The conclusion summarizes your findings and their implications for practice or future research. A Bachelor's thesis should be around three pages, while a Master's thesis should be about five pages.

Bibliography/References

The references section lists the sources you used in your thesis. It is essential to list all of the sources you used, even if you did not cite them directly in the text.

The appendices include any additional material relevant to your thesis but do not fit within the main body of the text. This part might consist of data sets, survey instruments, or detailed descriptions of research methods.

Tips and tricks for writing a successful Bachelor's or Master's thesis

Choose a topic you are passionate about : This factor will make writing your thesis much easier, as you already have some knowledge about the subject. Passion will also help you stay motivated throughout the writing process!

Do your research : Make sure to do a thorough literature review to be familiar with the existing research on your topic. This step will also help you develop new and original ideas for your thesis.

Create an outline : Once you have done your research, create an outline of your thesis to know what topics you will cover and in what order. It will help you stay organized and on track.

Start early and give yourself enough time : This will allow you to avoid unnecessary stress.

Create a schedule and stick to it:  This step will help you stay on track and make steady progress.

Take breaks and reward yourself : Breaks are essential to avoid burnout. Make sure to schedule some breaks and reward yourself for completing tasks! It will help you stay motivated.

Get feedback from your supervisor:  It is vital to get regular feedback throughout the process. It will ensure that you are on the right track.

Ask for help when you need it:  Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. There are many resources available to help you with the writing process.

These are the general guidelines for writing a Bachelor's or Master's thesis. However, checking with your supervisor and program for specific requirements is essential. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to writing a Bachelor's or Master's thesis. However, these tips and tricks will help you write a successful dissertation!

Happy writing!

"Improving the Efficiency and Accuracy of Landing Site Error Calculations for Re-Entry Vehicles"

Monday, April 29

Montgomery Knight 325

Upon entering Earth’s atmosphere, a re-entry body is subjected to a series of largely unpredictable conditions. These may include: entry trajectory, entry mass, vehicle drag, sensor error, atmospheric and weather conditions, unexpected perturbations, and any other unforeseen circumstance. These conditions make the modeling and tracking of the re-entry body’s trajectory a highly uncertain process. The cumulative effect of this uncertainty produces an area of possible landing locations, which often takes on the shape of an ellipse. It is often desirable to reduce the size of the landing ellipse or change the ellipse’s location so that the potential landing sites are restricted to a smaller or unpopulated area, increasing the mission safety and the recoverability of the spacecraft. To change the size or location of a landing ellipse, either the re-entry conditions can be altered or a flight control system, such as the system utilized by the space shuttle, can be implemented.

The current process of analyzing landing site error for re-entry missions is highly inefficient. Landing site error is most often determined by stochastically modeling the re-entry trajectory hundreds or thousands of times to observe the statistical distribution of landing sites, known as a Monte-Carlo simulation. In order to achieve an acceptable landing site and error, a Monte-Carlo simulation is performed, then a re-entry condition is changed based on engineering intuition and the process is repeated until the landing conditions satisfy the mission requirements. Attempts to improve the efficiency of this process focus on reducing the computational cost of the Monte-Carlo simulation, either by making edge-case assumptions for the dynamics or by using optimization techniques which struggle to achieve convergence on a solution.

The current study seeks to improve both the efficiency and accuracy of uncertainty modeling. By combining the accuracy of Monte-Carlo simulations with the efficiency of a reference table, a re-entry body’s landing ellipse location and size can be readily determined using only basic information about the atmospheric re-entry conditions and without the need to produce a full trajectory simulation. In this study, the re-entry conditions that define a landing ellipse are reduced to: the velocity magnitude, the flight path angle, the ballistic coefficient, the heading angle, and the latitude of re-entry. This table will be produced for both uncontrolled bodies and bodies with a propulsive flight control system.

The results produced from these five re-entry conditions represent the first method of determining landing site uncertainty that does not require any modeling of the system dynamics. Overall, the current study can be used to explore a wide range of trajectories to fully understand the envelope of hyper-sonic flight conditions and how they apply to different re-entry vehicles, even being able to scale down to extremely small sizes.

Juan Garcia Bonilla and Elise Scheers recognised for outstanding master thesis

During the VSV symposium: ‘Defying the dark’ in March 2024, two students were honored with awards for their exceptional master's theses. Juan Garcia Bonilla received the Heinz Stoewer Space award 2024 for his research on solar sails, while Elise Scheers received the NVvL Hans Wittenberg Prize 2024 for her work on integrating hybrid-electric aircraft design with strategic airline planning. Both students receive a certificate and €1000 in recognition of their achievements.

The Heinz Stoewer Space Award was initiated in 2018 by Prof. Stoewer when he received the prestigious Space Engineering IEEE Simon Ramo Medal. To encourage and congratulate master's students on their research, he has decided to donate his prize money to promote the visibility of work with great social relevance. In that line, Bonilla has allocated a portion of his award funds to treat teachers and students from his former school in Spain with fun and inspiring space merchandise, as a gesture of gratitude for their support.

master thesis 2024

Heinz Stower Space Award 2024

Juan Garcia Bonilla's thesis, titled "Uncertainty Quantification for Solar Sails in the Near-Earth Environment," earned him the Heinz Stoewer Space Award 2024. Solar sails are a novel form of space propulsion that utilises radiation pressure from the Sun. These systems are relatively new, which means there is still a lot unknown about their behaviour. Bonilla’s work aims to identify and quantify the effects of the key sources of uncertainty in Solar Sails missions around the Earth. This allows mission designers to design robust systems capable of success amidst uncertainty.

“Juan’s thesis represents one of the few studies ever to investigate the effect of dynamical uncertainties in solar sailing. Despite the complexity of the topic, Juan delved into it in a completely autonomous manner, employing novel methods far beyond the level of an MSc student. The results he found allowed for a significant enhancement of our understanding of solar sailing around the Earth, to the extent that they were used to support the design of NASA’s upcoming ACS3 solar-sail mission”. – Ir. Livio Carzana (Supervisor)

“The main challenge, for me, was that I had to learn a lot of statistics. Before coming to Delft, I wouldn't have said that I liked this branch of mathematics. However, a compelling class on Monte Carlo methods taught by Prof. L.E. Meester inspired this thesis and the methods employed. I had to learn a lot of statistics, which I ended up enjoying”. - Juan Garcia Bonilla, MSc

master thesis 2024

Bonilla's findings could directly support mission designers, particularly for the Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3) mission that was used as the main case study for the research. He also demonstrated some uncertainty propagation methods that are applicable to the wider astrodynamics community, some of which he is using in his current job as a simulation software developer.  Bonilla works at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a research center managed by Caltech and funded by NASA, where he develops digital twins for future robotics space missions.

The opportunity to work at NASA for the scientific exploration of space is a dream come true. While I may consider returning to Europe, or try to become a professor in the future, I envision myself in California for the foreseeable future. Juan Garcia Bonilla

Hans Wittenberg Prize 2024

Elise Scheers received the Hans Wittenberg Prize 2024 for her thesis titled: "Coupled Hybrid Electric Aircraft Design and Strategic Airline Planning". Her research focuses on integrating hybrid-electric aircraft design with strategic airline planning, aiming to develop a methodology for optimizing a hybrid-electric aircraft fleet's design while considering its impact on airline operations and network emissions.

“Elise has managed to successfully couple the disciplines of conceptual aircraft design and strategic airline planning, for hybrid-electric aircraft. Her work directly contributed to a conference paper that won two best-paper awards!” – Dr. Maurice Hoogreef (supervisor)

“The greatest challenge for me arose from integrating my background in flight performance, which primarily focused on aircraft design and optimization, with a fleet-and-network model from an operational standpoint. This was a novel endeavour for me”. – Elise Scheers MSc

master thesis 2024

Scheers currently works as a Research and Development Modelling and Simulation Engineer at the Netherlands Aerospace Center (NLR), where she focuses on modelling conceptual aircraft designs with alternative, more sustainable powertrain systems. She investigates the potentials for more sustainable aviation by assessing the performance and feasibility of these innovative technologies.

The award provides valuable recognition, enhancing my involvement and collaboration within the aerospace community. My aspiration is to continue contributing to disruptive technologies in the aerospace industry. I am really excited to see the possibilities that these innovations hold and hope to see them become reality in the future. Elise Scheers

The NVvL Hans Wittenberg Prize is awarded to the best aviation graduation report from Delft University of Technology, InHolland University of Applied Sciences, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences or the Netherlands Defense Academy. Named after Hans Wittenberg, who passed away in 2003 and was professor at TU Delft from 1961-1991 and board member of the NNvL from 1959 to 1975, the prize honours outstanding achievements in aviation research by students.
