Band 9 IELTS sample essay about obesity
Home » IELTS BAND 9 ESSAYS » Band 9 IELTS sample essay about obesity
Obesity is a serious problem in many countries, especially in rich countries. Discuss ways to solve the problem. Provide specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
With the advent of urbanisation and the rise in popularity of fast food, there have been accompanying issues with rising obesity rates – especially in developed countries like England and the USA. After providing a careful analysis of why obesity has risen so sharply in these countries, I shall suggest a number of ways in which the obesity epidemic can be ameliorated.
To begin with, it should be unsurprising that fast food is incredibly popular in wealthy countries (like England and the USA). Due to the high levels of development in these countries, consumers possess more money and can therefore consume vast amounts of fast food without seriously diminishing their income.
For example, the American Dietary Association found that (compared to the average Indian household), the average American household has a six times larger budget for food per month. Consequently, it is to be expected that obesity rates are much higher in countries with larger amounts of wealth.
However, despite the severity of the obesity problem, there are a number of ways in which developed countries could battle it more effectively. Firstly, developed governments could put far more pressure on fast food outlets to provide healthy alternatives to hamburgers, french fries and soft drinks.
Secondly, public exercise initiatives could be advertised and promoted far more vigorously. Lastly, modules that inform teenagers about healthy dietary requirements could be taught at schools.
In conclusion, although obesity is a serious issue in the developed world, if the above steps are taken, the situation will surely improve in the coming years .

Band 8 Sample | Causes of Obesity
Essay topic
In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?
Band 8 essay sample
It is a fact that in some countries, the average weight of the citizens is shooting up while their fitness and health conditions are worsening. In my view this is mainly because of the food habits and modern lifestyle they follow. In this essay, I will examine these two factors and then propose a viable solution.
One of the foremost reasons for obesity is the consumption of unhealthy foods. Many people started to follow western food habits and eventually ended up eating high fat content foods like pizza and burger. Regular consumption of these fat rich foods will increase a person’s weight in a short span of time.
In addition to that, now-a-days, more and more people are living a sedentary lifestyle. They do not dedicate any time to do any kind of physical activity. As a result, they lose their resistance power. If this lifestyle continues then people will fall ill more frequently and lose their health permanently.
It is necessary that the government takes steps to open many sports complexes and fitness studios near residential communities. Most of the people who do not want to travel far to go to a sports center will be ready to use one if it is available nearby. In a study conducted by a popular newspaper 90% of the respondents said that they are willing to use the gym or any physical activity centers if they are within 3 kilometer radius.
To conclude, encouraging people to do more physical activities will not only improve their fitness and overall health but also help people to shed their weight.

IELTS Causes and Effects Essay: Obesity in Children
This causes and effects model essay is about obesity in children.
You specifically have to talk about the causes (reasons) of the increase in overweight children, and explain the effects (results) of this.
Here is the question:
The percentage of overweight children in western society has increased by almost 20% in the last ten years.
Discuss the causes and effects of this disturbing trend.
Thinking about Coherence & Cohesion
This particular essay is organized as follows:
- Body 1: Causes
- Body 2: Effects
Of course it is also possible to have a 3 body paragraph essay. For example
However, remember not to write too little on one part.
For example, if you wrote one very short paragraph about 'causes' with little support and most of your essay on 'effects', you may then be seen to have not fully answered both parts of the question.
Another possible way of organizing it is to put each cause and its effect within a separate paragraph:
- Body 1: Cause 1 - Effect
- Body 2: Cause 2 - Effect
If you do this though, each particular cause must relate to that specific effect.
Example Child Obesity Essay
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Causes and Effects Essay - Model Answer
Over the last ten years, western societies have seen close to a 20% rise in the number of children who are overweight. This essay will discuss some reasons why this has occurred and examine the consequences of this worrying trend.
The main cause of this problem is poor diet. Over the last decade there has been a prolific increase in the number of fast food restaurants. For example, on nearly every high street there is a MacDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut. The food in these places has been proven to be very unhealthy, and much of the advertising is targeted at children, thus ensuring that they constitute the bulk of the customers of these establishments. However, it is not only due to eating out, but also the type of diet many children have at home. A lot of food consumed is processed food, especially with regards to ready-made meals which are a quick and easy option for parents who are working hard.
The effects of this have been and will continue to be very serious. Firstly, there has been a large increase in health related diseases amongst children, especially diabetes. This debilitating illness means a child has to be injected with insulin for the rest of their life. Not only this, very overweight children often experience bullying from other children, which may affect their mental health. The negative stigma of being overweight may also affect self-esteem.
To sum up, it is evident that there are several causes of obesity amongst children, and a variety of negative effects. Society must ensure steps are taken to prevent this problem from deteriorating further.

In the present day and age, obesity has become a flagrant problem due to the upsurge of urbanisation and the ubiquity of fast food across the world. This problem is even more pertinent for affluent nations. In this essay, I will explore the possible solutions and reasons for this problem.
Firstly, one of the major causes of obesity is the lack of proper nutritional guidance. Obesity is actually a form of malnutrition in which people show a preference for consuming sugary drinks and junk food rather than following a balanced diet. Access to junk food is especially more in developed countries due to more advertising and publicity by fast-food chains. Secondly, there has been an increment in sedentary lifestyles, which, coupled with a lack of physical activity, has also contributed to the rise in obesity. Lastly, environmental factors such as the lack of gyms or public parks have also contributed to the waxing of obesity.
Solutions for obesity would include governmental regulation of food advertising and monitoring constituents of food products. Public awareness should be raised about nutritious diet plans to encourage people to develop better eating habits. Encouraging people to participate in exercise through clubs and communities can also help reduce obesity. Governments should open more public parks and more gyms should be built to ensure that everyone has access to places designed for exercising.
To sum up, obesity is indeed an exigent situation, particularly for countries that are affluent, and implementing adequate measures on a social level will eventually help desist this problem at its roots and emend this situation in the future.

Your Guide to IELTS Band 7
IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Essay: Weight and Health
Here is another of my IELTS model essays for IELTS Writing Task 2 . It’s a problems-solutions essay question:
In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?
Cambridge IELTS 8 Test 4 (Academic)
This task is asking you to discuss the CAUSES of the problem – why are people gaining weight, and why they less fit and healthy? – and to suggest some SOLUTIONS.
Note: you must discuss the CAUSES of the problem, not the problem itself. If you discuss the problem of being overweight (e.g. you write about diabetes and heart disease), then your band score for Task Response will be limited, probably to Band 5.
One potential problem with this task is there is a lot you could write about! But if you want a high band score, it’s better to write a few ideas in detail , rather than a lot of ideas briefly.
Note: in my plan I’ve clearly separated “increasing weight” from “decreasing health and fitness”, and I’ve developed one clear idea for each. The causes of these problems probably overlap, so you could write about the causes together…but if you get a mean IELTS examiner, they might think you haven’t covered all parts of the question. So to be safe, I’ve dealt with the causes separately.
- too much carbohydrate in food, e.g. sugary drinks, junk food with rice and pasta
- people take car everywhere, no walking
- more people do seated work in offices than in past
- Governments need to force food producers to reduce sugar content, e.g. with sugar tax
- Increase fuel tax to make car travel more expensive
- Personal responsibility: walk more, watch what you eat
So that’s my plan. Now I know what to write. Here’s my essay.
Over the last few decades, rising obesity and a drop in people’s overall health and fitness have become a major concern in many countries, especially those in the developed world. This essay will consider two of the main causes of this problem, along with some possible solutions.
One of the main causes of increasing weight amongst the population is because so much food and drink contains large amounts of carbohydrates. Junk food, for example, tends to contain high quantities of cheap pasta and rice, while soft drinks often contain large amounts of sugar. If these carbohydrates are not burned up through exercise, they will simply be converted by the body into fat, leading to weight gain.
However, people are getting less exercise, which means that not only will they gain weight, they will also experience lower levels of health and fitness. One of the main reasons for this lack of exercise is our increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Whereas in the past, many people used to be engaged in manual labour such as factory work or farming, today they are more likely to be sat in an office hunched over a computer. Add to that the fact that people are more likely to commute to work by car, rather than walk or cycle, and we can see why people are getting fatter and less healthy.
There are some solutions to this problem that governments could provide, such as a sugar tax. In countries where this has been introduced, such as the U.K., this has led to drinks’ manufacturers reducing the amount of sugar in their products. I also feel that higher levels of tax on petrol might make car drivers think twice about whether they should really take the car out on the road. Ultimately, however, it is up to individuals to take more responsibility for their own health and fitness. They could make the effort to walk more and take the car less, and make better choices regarding their diet using information that is widely available on the Internet.
In conclusion, sugary, carbohydrate-rich foods are one of the main causes of increasing weight, and this problem has been exacerbated by our increasingly sedentary lifestyle. However, government initiatives such as a sugar tax and encouraging people to adopt a more active lifestyle can help counteract the problem.

Sample Essay 1
Obesity is increasingly recognized as a significant public health issue across many regions globally. This essay posits that the primary causes of this epidemic are predominantly lifestyle-related, such as poor dietary choices and insufficient physical activity. Additionally, it will suggest solutions including enhanced public health policies and community-based programs to mitigate these factors.
The ascent of obesity rates can be principally attributed to modern dietary habits, which often favour convenience over nutritional value. The prevalence of fast food, coupled with aggressive marketing and the availability of processed foods high in sugars and fats, contributes significantly to poor dietary choices. Moreover, urbanization has seen a decline in traditional diets, replaced by more calorie-dense, less nutritious options. A study by the World Health Organization highlights that urban populations are at a higher risk of obesity due to these dietary changes. Addressing this requires a multifaceted approach that includes legislation to control food marketing, alongside the promotion of nutritional education to encourage healthier eating habits.
Another pivotal factor is the sedentary lifestyle that has become common due to technological advancements and urbanization. Many individuals spend prolonged periods sitting at work or during leisure activities, which significantly reduces calorie expenditure. To combat this, governments and communities could develop more green spaces and recreational facilities that encourage physical activity. Furthermore, integrating physical education programs within schools and workplaces can increase daily activity levels. Successful examples include cities like Amsterdam, where urban planning prioritizes cycling and walking, significantly lowering obesity rates among its residents through enhanced daily physical activity.
In conclusion, the obesity epidemic primarily stems from unhealthy diets and inactive lifestyles. Effective resolution would require comprehensive public health strategies and infrastructural changes that promote nutritional diets and regular physical activity. Implementing these solutions could significantly alter the trajectory of obesity prevalence, ensuring a healthier future for upcoming generations.
Sample Essay 2
Obesity is burgeoning into a formidable public health challenge in several regions worldwide. This essay argues that the primary drivers of this trend are socio-economic disparities and modern lifestyle conveniences. It will further recommend targeted governmental interventions and grassroots initiatives as potential remedies for curtailing the spread of this health crisis.
Socio-economic factors play a crucial role in the obesity epidemic. Lower-income groups often have limited access to affordable, healthy food options, making calorie-dense and nutrient-poor foods more attractive due to their lower cost and higher accessibility. Additionally, economic constraints limit opportunities for engaging in regular physical activity, as gym memberships and recreational activities may be cost-prohibitive. Studies have shown that neighbourhoods with higher poverty rates tend to have higher obesity rates due to these compounded issues. To address this, policy makers must consider subsidizing healthier food options and investing in community sports facilities and programs that are financially accessible to all societal segments.
Modern conveniences and technological advancements also contribute significantly to the rising obesity rates. The convenience of transportation and the proliferation of sedentary entertainment options, such as streaming services and video games, discourage physical activity. The shift towards remote work further exacerbates this by reducing incidental movement throughout the day. To counteract these trends, there should be an emphasis on creating policies that encourage physical activity in daily routines, such as incentivizing active commuting and integrating standing desks in offices. Successful interventions, like those implemented in Scandinavian countries, which offer tax benefits for companies promoting health and fitness initiatives, demonstrate the potential impact of such policies on public health.
In conclusion, the obesity crisis is largely fuelled by socio-economic inequalities and the sedentary nature of modern life. Addressing it effectively requires a combination of government-led initiatives and community-driven efforts designed to enhance access to nutritious foods and promote physical activity. Such strategic interventions are essential for reversing the current trends and fostering a healthier populace.
