Your great grandchildren are powerless in today’s society. As Oxford philosopher William MacAskill says:

They cannot vote or lobby or run for public office, so politicians have scant incentive to think about them. They can’t bargain or trade with us, so they have little representation in the market, And they can’t make their views heard directly: they can’t tweet, or write articles in newspapers, or march in the streets. They are utterly disenfranchised.

But the things we do now influence them: for better or worse. We make laws that govern them, build infrastructure for them and take out loans for them to pay back. So what happens when we consider future generations while we make decisions today?

Review: What We Owe the Future – William MacAskill (OneWorld)

This is the key question in What We Owe the Future . It argues for what MacAskill calls longtermism: “the idea that positively influencing the longterm future is a key moral priority of our time.” He describes it as an extension of civil rights and women’s suffrage; as humanity marches on, we strive to consider a wider circle of people when making decisions about how to structure our societies.

MacAskill makes a compelling case that we should consider how to ensure a good future not only for our children’s children, but also the children of their children. In short, MacAskill argues that “future people count, there could be a lot of them, and we can make their lives go better.”

Future people count

It’s hard to feel for future people. We are bad enough at feeling for our future selves. As The Simpsons puts it: “That’s a problem for future Homer. Man, I don’t envy that guy.”

We all know we should protect our health for our own future. In a similar vein, MacAskill argues that we all “know” future people count.

Concern for future generations is common sense across diverse intellectual traditions […] When we dispose of radioactive waste, we don’t say, “Who cares if this poisons people centuries from now?” Similarly, few of us who care about climate change or pollution do so solely for the sake of people alive today. We build museums and parks and bridges that we hope will last for generations; we invest in schools and longterm scientific projects; we preserve paintings, traditions, languages; we protect beautiful places.

There could be a lot of future people

Future people count, and MacAskill counts those people. The sheer number of future people might make their wellbeing a key moral priority. According to MacAskill and others, humanity’s future could be vast : much, much more than the 8 billion alive today.

While it’s hard to feel the gravitas, our actions may affect a dizzying number of people. Even if we last just 1 million years, as long as the average mammal – and even if the global population fell to 1 billion people – then there would be 9.1 trillion people in the future.

We might struggle to care, because these numbers can be hard to feel . Our emotions don’t track well against large numbers. If I said a nuclear war would kill 500 million people, you might see that as a “huge problem”. If I instead said that the number is actually closer to 5 billion , it still feels like a “huge problem”. It does not emotionally feel 10 times worse. If we risk the trillions of people who could live in the future, that could be 1,000 times worse – but it doesn’t feel 1,000 times worse.

MacAskill does not argue we should give those people 1,000 times more concern than people alive today. Likewise, MacAskill does not say we should morally weight a person living a million years from now exactly the same as someone alive 10 or 100 years from now. Those distinctions won’t change what we can feasibly achieve now, given how hard change can be.

Instead, he shows if we care about future people at all, even those 100 years hence, we should simply be doing more . Fortunately, there are concrete things humanity can do.

We can make the lives of future people better

Another reason we struggle to be motivated by big problems is that they feel insurmountable. This is a particular concern with future generations. Does anything I do make a difference, or is it a drop in the bucket? How do we know what to do when the long-run effects are so uncertain ?

Even present-day problems can feel hard to tackle. At least for those problems we can get fast, reliable feedback on progress. Even with that advantage, we struggle. For the second year in a row, we did not make progress toward our sustainable development goals, like reducing war, poverty, and increasing growth. Globally, 4.3% of children still die before the age of five. COVID-19 has killed about 23 million people . Can we – and should we – justify focusing on future generations when we face these problems now?

MacAskill argues we can. Because the number of people is so large, he also argues we should. He identifies some areas where we could do things that protect the future while also helping people who are alive now. Many solutions are win-win.

For example, the current pandemic has shown that unforeseen events can have a devastating effect. Yet, despite the recent pandemic, many governments have done little to set up more robust systems that could prevent the next pandemic. MacAskill outlines ways in which those future pandemics could be worse.

Most worrying are the threats from engineered pathogens, which

[…] could be much more destructive than natural pathogens because they can be modified to have dangerous new properties. Could someone design a pathogen with maximum destructive power—something with the lethality of Ebola and the contagiousness of measles?

He gives examples, like militaries and terrorist groups, that have tried to engineer pathogens in the past.

The risk of an engineered pandemic wiping us all out in the next 100 years is between 0.1% and 3%, according to estimates laid out in the book.

That might sound low, but MacAskill argues we would not step on a plane if you were told “it ‘only’ had a one-in-a-thousand chance of crashing and killing everyone on board”. These threaten not only future generations, but people reading this – and everyone they know.

MacAskill outlines ways in which we might be able to prevent engineered pandemics, like researching better personal protective equipment, cheaper and faster diagnostics, better infrastructure, or better governance of synthetic biology. Doing so would help save the lives of people alive today, reduce the risk of technological stagnation and protect humanity’s future.

The same win-wins might apply to decarbonisation , safe development of artificial intelligence , reducing risks from nuclear war , and other threats to humanity.

Things you can do to protect future generations

Some “longtermist” issues, like climate change, are already firmly in the public consciousness. As a result, some may find MacAskill’s book “common sense”. Others may find the speculation about the far future pretty wild (like all possible views of the longterm future).

MacAskill strikes an accessible balance between anchoring the arguments to concrete examples, while making modest extrapolations into the future. He helps us see how “common sense” principles can lead to novel or neglected conclusions.

For example, if there is any moral weight on future people, then many common societal goals (like faster economic growth) are vastly less important than reducing risks of extinction (like nuclear non-proliferation). It makes humanity look like an “imprudent teenager”, with many years ahead, but more power than wisdom:

Even if you think [the risk of extinction] is only a one-in-a-thousand, the risk to humanity this century is still ten times higher than the risk of your dying this year in a car crash. If humanity is like a teenager, then she is one who speeds around blind corners, drunk, without wearing a seat belt.

Our biases toward present, local problems are strong, so connecting emotionally with the ideas can be hard. But MacAskill makes a compelling case for longtermism through clear stories and good metaphors. He answers many questions I had about safeguarding the future. Will the future be good or bad? Would it really matter if humanity ended? And, importantly, is there anything I can actually do?

The short answer is yes, there is. Things you might already do help, like minimising your carbon footprint – but MacAskill argues “other things you can do are radically more impactful”. For example, reducing your meat consumption would address climate change, but donating money to the world’s most effective climate charities might be far more effective.

Beyond donations, three other personal decisions seem particularly high impact to me: political activism, spreading good ideas, and having children […] But by far the most important decision you will make, in terms of your lifetime impact, is your choice of career.

MacAskill points to a range of resources – many of which he founded – that guide people in these areas. For those who might have flexibility in their career, MacAskill founded 80,000 Hours , which helps people find impactful, satisfying careers. For those trying to donate more impactfully, he founded Giving What We Can. And, for spreading good ideas, he started a social movement called Effective Altruism .

Longtermism is one of those good ideas. It helps us better place our present in humanity’s bigger story. It’s humbling and inspiring to see the role we can play in protecting the future. We can enjoy life now and safeguard the future for our great grandchildren. MasAskill clearly shows that we owe it to them.

Climate change is already here, but we know that its worst impacts are waiting in the wings for future generations. Unless we step up to the challenge, as individuals and as a species. Stylianos Syropoulos and Ezra Markowitz discuss how emphasising personal and collective responsibility towards future generations can not only promote climate change concern, but also potentially increase support for the hard work ahead.

As we progress through the 21st century, the true contours and effects of climate change are coming into sharper focus. Seemingly on a daily basis we are bearing witness to one climate-related disaster after another, compounding human suffering and misery now and for years to come.

But we know, too, that what we have witnessed thus far is only a prelude to what lies ahead in the face of continued inaction and foot-dragging. More frequent and more damaging impacts are highly likely in the decades to come. To put it a different way, future generations desperately need us to do something now in order to give them a chance when it’s their turn.

Luckily, there is something we can do now. In fact, there are many different things that we—people alive today—can do to avoid or at least deflect the worst impacts of climate change on future generations. And not only can we do something: we have a responsibility to do so , to take concrete steps to ensure that this bleak future is prevented. The question is, how do we encourage people to take this responsibility seriously, or to even recognise it in the first place?

A growing body of research in the behavioural and social sciences can provide actionable insights. Over the past two decades, researchers have explored a wide variety of approaches to increasing people’s recognition and acceptance of climate change as an issue of personal and collective responsibility and action. To name just a few, these include leveraging people’s motivation to leave a positive legacy , encouraging them to reflect on the sacrifices made by previous generations on their behalf, and emphasising self-transcendent and altruistic values in environmental messaging campaigns.

But do perceptions of responsibility towards the future really matter? After all, we all know there are things we should do in our lives—eat better, exercise more, be more generous—but choose not to. In fact, our recent analysis of nationally-representative U.S. survey data , published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology , found that people who feel a personal responsibility to protect future generations are significantly more likely to worry about climate change, support pro-environmental policies, and believe that climate change represents a critical threat to humanity.

In our analyses we found that this perception of responsibility was, for the most part, unrelated to news consumption, gender and racial identities, and income level. Perhaps more surprisingly, perceived responsibility was also not meaningfully related to political ideology, one of the strongest drivers of climate change public opinion in the US. As a result, our findings strongly suggest that perceptions of responsibility towards future generations are a robust mechanism that can be harnessed to promote pro-environmental action and policy support, regardless of individual and group differences previously shown to sow discord in the context of climate change.

Importantly, the effects of responsibility towards future generations could be linked to support for specific policy proposals and collective actions, including opposition to the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, opposition to the use of fracking as a drilling method, and support for enforcing stricter limits on the amount of carbon dioxide produced by societies. Increased perceptions of responsibility also predicted increased support for funding renewable energy initiatives.

In addition, people who felt a strong responsibility to protect future generations also considered the protection of the environment as an important personal value. These people were also more likely to experience awe towards nature (a feeling of wonder over nature’s beauty), another previously identified predictor of pro-environmental engagement. Importantly, those who expressed increased perceived responsibility towards future others were also more likely to see climate change and global warming as a threat and an issue that demands more of our attention, and more likely to accept the science of climate change.

These findings are promising, as they suggest at least three key takeaways:

1) People who consider themselves responsible for protecting future generations also express endorsement of values and beliefs associated with wanting to protect the natural world. These people express more support for pro-environmental policies, they see climate change for the threat that it is, they are more likely to accept scientific findings on the subject, and they endorse values that aim to protect the environment overall. Perceived responsibility towards the future can translate into concrete action to protect the environment for future generations.

2) Perceptions of responsibility towards future generation are, for the most part, independent of many socio-demographic variables previously identified as barriers to public engagement on climate change. This suggests that future efforts focused on increasing such perceptions may be able to circumvent or overcome established obstacles to pro-environmental action .

3) Most respondents in the survey strongly endorsed a personal responsibility towards future generations. Nearly 50% considered such responsibility “extremely important” to themselves and another 38% said it was “very important.” Americans tend to disagree on many things, particularly across the political aisle, so finding such strong agreement suggests perceptions of responsibility towards the future may represent a powerful starting point for meaningful collective action on the major issues of our time.

Let’s face it—dealing with the environmental challenges we face will be tough, in no small part because to do so will require the present generation to take costly action to protect people who will be alive far in the future. We will need to leverage every resource available to encourage individuals, communities, organisations, businesses, and entire nations to do what is needed. This includes our psychological, social, and cultural resources in addition to the political, economic, and technological ones we tend to look towards first. Our work suggests that widely shared perceptions of responsibility towards future generations represent an important and powerful tool for shifting behaviour in a positive direction to confront the climate change challenge before us. Luckily, such perceptions of responsibility are already widely shared within American society. Now it’s time to put them to work.

It is very crucial to learn about our environment and protect it.

IMPORTANCE OF SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT

The way pollution is getting worse has made it harder for living things to survive on Earth. Life has to keep going because it is in danger . Not all organisms can live, so some have died, which needs to be stopped. Protecting the environment will help nature grow again and make it easier for people to survive. The environment will go back to being full of life and resources.

WHY SHOULD WE TAKE CARE OF THE PLANET?

We have plenty of water, air, and soil , all of which are gifts from Mother Earth. People have used gifts to their own benefit. T ake a moment. Close your eyes. Think about the people in your life — your family and loved ones, your classmates, your neighbors, your friends and co-workers. Now think about some of the other people you have known over the years, from the lost loves, deceased relatives, trusted mentors, and complete strangers who affected the course of your life.

Guess what? They all have something in common.

Whether they’re young or old, rich or poor, conservative or liberal, from small towns or big cities, or from the different ethnicities, beliefs, genders, and orientations that make up our diverse society, they all want a better future for their children. So do you. So do I. So did our parents, grandparents, and other ancestors. In fact, we all share that fundamental, human desire: We want our children and the generation that comes after us to be happy, healthy, safe, and secure. That instinct is baked inside of us. It’s part of what makes us human.

B ut for our children to truly thrive, we must stop damaging the planet we live on, the world that nourishes us, protects us, and sustains our lives. We need to protect the environmental systems we all depend on — to provide clean air, clean water, safe food, a safe climate, and so many other essentials.

We need to protect and sustain the planet, because it protects and sustains us.

The alternative is simply unthinkable. If we end up critically damaging Earth’s environment, we will leave future generations with a radically altered climate, broken ecosystems, and vanishing natural resources. It would be a dangerous world, difficult to thrive in. Environmental disasters would become the norm, dominating the human condition for generations — all because we didn’t act wisely today.

And no one wants this. No matter one’s political leanings, income level, ethnicity, or upbringing, no one wants to leave a wrecked planet — a world that is depleted, damaged, and dangerous — to their children. None of us want to be the first people in history to knowingly imperil their children’s future.

But that’s exactly what we’re doing, even if we’re not willing to admit it. However, we know, deep in our gut, that we need to do better. We know that we need to act, quickly and boldly, and turn things around.

But, instead, we delay. We indulge in self-denial. And, day by day, year by year, we let things get worse.

U nfortunately, after decades of these delays, we can’t wait any more. There is no time left to waste.

The Earth’s environment is already starting to experience irreversible damage — to its climate, to its biological diversity and ecosystems, and to its natural resources — and much more is coming soon if we don’t quickly change our ways. In fact, the long-term fate of Earth’s key environmental systems will be largely determined by the actions we take, or don’t take, during the coming years.

In other words, it will happen on our watch.

Whether we like it or not, we now stand at a critical juncture in human history. We didn’t choose this, of course. We didn’t sign up for it. We didn’t ask to be here. But we have inherited one of the most important moments in all of human history.

So, what are we going to do with it?

What we do will decide the future of our planet, our civilization, and our species for millennia to come. What we do will determine whether we profoundly change Earth’s climate for thousands of years, or not. What we do will determine how much sea levels will rise, and which cities will vanish under rising tides. What we do will determine which species, and which ecosystems, will survive into the future. What we do will determine whether we have sufficient natural resources — including the crops and soils, forests and fisheries, clean air and freshwater we all depend on. What we do will ultimately determine who thrives, and who dies, on a rapidly changing planet.

Perhaps no other moment in human existence has been as crucial as this one. The destiny of our planet and our civilization now rests on our shoulders.

So, like it or not, it’s up to us.

B ut don’t despair.

While some people may see this as a terrifying prospect, I find it energizing and inspiring. We — yes, people like you and me! — can shape the future and put it on a better, more sustainable path.

But it won’t be easy. First of all, we will need to completely rethink the way we use and produce food, water, and energy. Our current systems are inherently unsustainable, and will devastate the environment if they remain in place much longer. We will also need to rethink our homes and cities, our methods of transportation, and the way we use and discard materials. We will need to rethink the relationship between our society and the physical and biological realities of this planet. We will need to rethink everything.

Scratch that. We don’t need to rethink everything, we get to! It’s an opportunity , not a sacrifice.

Remember, the systems we must change are fundamentally broken. They simply don’t work, at least not in the long run. So we have the amazing opportunity to reinvent them, and through creativity, innovation, and hard work, we can make them far better.

Far from being a time of misery and sacrifice, this is an unparalleled chance to do things right. We can find smarter ways, better ways, to support our economy and ourselves, without wrecking the planet and compromising the lives of people in the future.

Building this better world and this better future — one that is healthy, safe, and secure for the long term — is going to be the biggest opportunity any generation has ever seen.

I honestly believe — no, I know — that we can seize this moment and build a better world. We have the knowledge, the tools, and the ability to do most of it right now. We can change course, today, and with some luck and hard work, we can build a thriving world for future generations.

There’s really nothing stopping us.

So why aren’t we? What’s keeping us from building a better future right now?

It’s simple: We haven’t decided to.

We have yet to make our choice as a society, as a civilization, as a people. We haven’t stepped up to the plate. We haven’t placed our bet, and rolled the hard six. But now it’s time.

B asically, it comes down to this: We have to choose between two versions of ourselves.

Are going to be the people we have been? Selfish. Greedy. Fearful. Divided. More concerned with trivial issues than solving real problems.

Or are we going to be the people we could be? People like our parents and grandparents — people who were courageous and selfless, who defeated fascism, raced to the moon, cured diseases, fought for moral causes, and gave us a better world?

Are we going to accept the world as it is? A world divided by fear and hate. A world that ignores science and truth when it’s uncomfortable. A world that doesn’t care about the future. A world more concerned with getting rich quick, from instant fame or easy bitcoins, rather than meaningful work that contributes to society.

Or are we going to build the world that should be? A world where we set aside our greed and petty differences and are kind, generous, and just with each other. A world where we listen to science, and act on what we know to be true. A world where we are guided by ethics and a strong moral compass. A world where we leave our children a better future, just as our ancestors did for us. A world that we can be proud of.

That’s our choice.

The choice we make will not only define who we are, in this crucial moment in history, but it will also define the fate of our planet and the countless generations that come after us.

F ortunately, that choice is still up to us. It hasn’t yet slipped from our fingers. We still have a little — not much! — time left to make it, if we don’t squander it completely by delaying too long.

So, what’s it going to be? Will we be a noble people, or a shallow one? Will we build a good future, or a bad one? That’s up to you. And me. And all of us.

We will need to look deep within ourselves, and at the society and systems around us, and make our choice.

I just hope that all we make an thoughtful choice. I hope it is guided equally by our heart and our head. I hope we have a clear moral vision of the world we want to build, and develop the knowledge and wisdom we need to build it in a safe, secure, and sustainable way.

In making this choice, we must be guided by ethics — to know what we should do — and by science — to know what is actually possible . Together, ethics and science can guide us to a just and sustainable future, which we can proudly hand to our descendants.

No matter what, the future will be determined by the choice we make.

Introduction.

The presented case scenario indicates that redbeard_90 does not see anything wrong with the ongoing damage and destruction of the natural environment. This situation supports the argument that redbeard_90 is placing value on destruction as the correct path towards making the planet better for all human beings. For redbeard_90, a unique attitude is evident whereby people would be allowed to act freely through the power of the free use conception. Such an approach has the potential to encourage more individuals in different parts of the globe to overuse a wide range of natural resources. Redbeard_90 would guide people to utilize the environment without necessarily thinking about posterity and protection (Brusseau, 2012). This attitude would be informed by the notion that humans are engaging in actions intended to transform the planet and the natural environment in order to suit them.

The progress and domination argument remains a common approach many people opposed to environmental protection apply. Specifically, the notion guides individuals to avoid placing any intrinsic or necessary value in the environment. Those who pursue such an ideology would acknowledge that an autonomous worth is lacking in all animals, resources, plant, and water (Brusseau, 2012). This free-use argument is applied to guide communities to rely on the natural world to meet their needs and achieve their maximum potential.

The above form of argument appears to be in tandem with what redbeard_90 wrote on Yahoo! forum page. Specifically, the student seems not to care about the idea of saving the planet. The individual is convinced that humans should continue pursuing their goals and rely on the available resources to meet their demands (Meier et al., 2019). In such a way, redbeard_90 believes the proposed approach could guide and help humans to transform their surrounding environments to suit their demands. From this analysis, it is agreeable that redbeard_90 presents an observation that echoes the domination and progress argument whenever focusing on the planet.

The responses by Super Nova reveal that she believes strongly in environmental conservation since it has the potential to protect the planet. She understands that future generations would need it for survival and realization of their goals. Based on the statement, two unique values appear to be guiding her expectations and desire. First, the biosphere value could guide personal actions and ideas that are intended to take care and protect the natural environment (Meier et al., 2019). Second, the altruistic value guides people to take good care and support of other people. Based on these attributes, it is agreeable that Super Nova is concerned about the welfare of individuals who could be at risk of air pollution and the natural environment.

Super Nova is convinced that human beings have a role to protect and safeguard the integrity of the natural environment. This is the case since any attempt to pollute the planet contributes to respiratory problems and other health predicaments. By engaging in activities that are intended to save the planet, Super Nova believes strongly that most of the problems recorded today could be reduced significantly. The woman goes further to acknowledge that future generations could only survive and achieve their goals if those occupying the planet today safeguard their respective environments (Brusseau, 2012). The initiative would help address the problem of draughts, protect lakes, and ensure that more people have access to adequate food supplies.

The ideas by Super Nova reveal that she believes strongly that nature has an intrinsic value. Specifically, the natural environment needs to exist irrespective of human expectations or uses. This means that people should be keen to protect it and understand that it was not only meant for their use or benefits. Based on this understanding, it is agreeable that an ecocentric viewpoint emerges from her observation (Brusseau, 2012). Failure to uphold such a value means that more individuals or communities would be entitled to destroy the planet while pursuing their goals.

Luke presents an animated response intended to guide more people to change the current national mindset regarding the issue of environmental conservation. Based on the poster, it would be agreeable that Luke is among those who mix a little of protecting the planet and worrying about human welfare. The reasoning behind such an observation is that Luke is convinced that most of the measures people advocate for might not help the planet recover completely (Meier et al., 2019). However, planet Earth could not be prevented for using a little help. Additionally, Luke goes further to indicate that the efforts to develop cleaner energy and alternative fuels could work positively for him and others.

Some people interested in the welfare of the planet are either interested in helping nonhuman animals or the natural world in totality. From his words, it is agreeable that Luke is among those who are focusing on the integrity of the natural world. This is true since he begins by acknowledging that the planet could accept some help to ensure that it recovers from the industrial plunder experienced for hundreds of years. He goes further to indicate that people could support clean energy and protect the problematic challenge of global warming (Grossman, 2018). Luke’s arguments and observations are, therefore, designed in such a way that they could help protect the natural environment.

The idea of environmental conservation could be pursued by limiting the process of industrialization or relying on industrial advances. After going through his statements, it is agreeable that Luke sounds more of a conservationist because he begins by advocating for a new mindset. He goes further to accept any form of advancement as long as it helps make the available air cleaner or reduces he price of oil. The process of developing cleaner ways of doing things call for advanced industrial activities (Grossman, 2018). These notions show conclusively that Luke is more of a conservationist than a protector.

From the presented poster, it is notable that scottsdalehigh64 does not place much value or concern for human existence. He believes that humans have been destructive over the years since they think they have a higher right in comparison with the other forms of life. The best action plan would be to provide legal frameworks intended to inform human activities while taking conservation to the next level (McMahan, 2010). All countries across the globe should be involved if positive results are to be recorded. The problems experienced in the past due to human activities should be applied to justify this kind of initiative. This approach would encourage more people to be involved and eventually make the planet a better place for all.

The idea would contribute to a unique problem whereby all plant eating animals would increase in numbers and eventually make the available natural resources inadequate for them (McMahan, 2010). This choice would eventually result in the extinction of both plant eaters and the available vegetation cover. These viewpoints explain why a renewed approach to the problems affecting the natural planet is recommendable. The ultimate aim should be to make the environment sustainable and capable of supporting both the current and future plant and animal species.

The global community is presently grappling with various challenges, such as climate change, pollution, and global warming. Analysts and scholars have presented numerous studied intended to shed more light about the causes and possible implications of these predicaments. The excited poster by KiRa01 appears to guide and encourage people and pursue their goals as if there was no tomorrow. From this statement, KiRa01believes in situation whereby individuals lead their lives without having any regard to consequences that might be encountered in the future (Ladouceur, 2019). Such an approach is frantic, reckless, and capable of disorienting the natural environment and eventually making it unavailable to future generations.

KiRa01 presents a negative attitude that should not be applied when focusing on the problematic issue of environmental degradation. However, the argument could be adopted and considered by applying ethical principles that has defined the field for years. Specifically, companies and governments have been observed to engage in actions that have been observed to affect the integrity of the natural environment. For example, industrialists pollute the environment in an effort to mass produce and market a wide range of products (Ladouceur, 2019). Similarly, governments tend to pursue projects that destabilize natural ecosystems in an effort to streamline transportation or promote economic activities. From an ethical perspective, people could live their lives as if there was no tomorrow and be able to put food on the table. If some ignore such an announcement by KiRa01, chances are high that other people would do the same thing in one way or the other.

Those who strive to protect the planet will be unable to achieve their goals since other people and companies have continued to disregard the integrity of the natural environment. If more people chose to follow this kind of advice, chances are high that government officials and policymakers could become more involved and ready to change the situation (Ladouceur, 2019). The advice could eventually become the real foundation for positive ethical approaches intended to protect the planet against any form of destruction and overuse of resources.

Protecting the planet for future generations

The protests led by Extinction Rebellion remind us that there are more pressing problems than Britain’s withdrawal from the EU ( Of course these protests are inconvenient. They are designed to disrupt us , Editorial, 11 October).

Exploitative capitalism has sacrificed our wellbeing – and much of the planet’s resources – on the altar of unlimited growth, binding the hands of those yet to be born.

For those in power, the questions are straightforward. Are they prepared to jeopardise their careers – or their profits – for our children’s children? Are they ready to put short-term politicking aside and help deliver a sustainable plan for the future? Are they willing to take difficult decisions on behalf of voters they’ll never meet?

These questions have guided my future generations bill. It is a direct response to the challenge posed by those striking for the climate: at a national level, it will ensure that future generations are accounted for at every level of policymaking.

Tropical forests are the major buffer against climate change, so burning them has a double impact on global heating. The only way to reduce climate warming will be to reverse the loss of natural habitat and reduce burning of fossil fuels. Technological solutions are being developed to scrub the atmosphere of greenhouse gases and replace fossil fuels; they are unlikely to achieve what is needed in the short time available. Their implementation will prove futile if tropical forests and savannas continue to be destroyed.

Protection of tropical habitats and their biodiversity requires international funds leveraged as taxation from the subsidised profits of energy organisations responsible for producing the fossil fuels that create this pollution.

Viable legal mechanisms need to ensure that the funds are exclusively spent in protecting and restoring forests, their biodiversity, and the native people living there. This process will only attain the support of the energy producers and the children marching in the streets if the funds maximise the conservation of forests in ways that minimise government abuse and other forms of corruption.

The recent speeches at the UN were drowned out by the more eloquent and vociferous voices of tomorrow protesting on the streets outside. The initiative outlined here would provide an important first step in reversing the cascade of environmental sins that yesterday’s fathers have heaped upon their children’s futures. Saudi Aramco is actively addressing the climate challenge ( Revealed: the 20 firms behind a third of all carbon emissions , 10 October). Today the world faces the dual challenge of meeting its growing energy needs in a reliable and affordable manner while ensuring a sustainable environment for future generations.

In the last century, availability of affordable energy mostly in the form of fossil fuels powered productivity growth and development around the world, contributing to an unprecedented improvement in quality of life, and a doubling of life expectancies. In the last 25 years, affordable energy helped lift a billion people out of poverty. We tend to take these achievements for granted.

With every light there is a shadow – and for the world energy system that is the unsustainable emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. The challenge for energy producers and consumers alike is to take meaningful actions to minimise these emissions and ultimately achieve carbon neutrality.

Saudi Aramco has a long track record in reducing emissions from its operations. Thanks to decades-long investment in sustainable operations, we have achieved the lowest carbon intensity of any major oil producer. We are an industry leader in developing and deploying emissions-reducing technologies, partnering with public and private institutions around the world.

In order to achieve a low-carbon future, we believe it is necessary to meet both global energy demand and lower emissions. That must include responsible investments which reduce the overall carbon footprint of the oil and gas industry and end-use markets. Angela Singer ( Letters , 11 October) clearly does not understand the aims of Extinction Rebellion, which are not to exhort the public to deliver climate action through making their own lives as carbon-neutral as possible (though this would of course be a good thing) – but to “speak truth to government” so that those in power acknowledge what is actually happening to the planet, and act to reward and encourage sustainable businesses and transport systems, promote renewable energy solutions, and stop driving an economy based on fossil fuels. Extinction Rebellion are justified in their protests demanding radical change to save the planet. However, what the movement must not do is become anti-politics. We too often hear the cry that they are all the same, that the politicians are not listening. This is wrong.

Maybe Boris Johnson panders to that stereotype, dismissing the protesters as “crusties”, while his government does little to address the challenges. But what of others? The Labour party has a bold green deal in line with most of XR’s demands. The Greens and the SNP also have progressive ideas.

Many councils across the land have declared climate emergencies and are radically changing the way things are done. While progress may not be as rapid as some may hope, the impetus is there.

Last March 2019, the United Nations claimed that humankind has only 11 years left to reverse the effects of climate change and save the future generation. By now, there is ample information and awareness on climate change for an entire population to modify their lifestyle. It is the perfect time to educate yourself and the people around you to implement practices that could help replenish and maintain natural resources for the benefit of all. You and your company have the power to help save the future generation.

What are the economic impacts of climate change?

Each generation has the power to change the economy. Gen Z has powered up the media, while Gen AA has a lot of potential in shifting  the current economy. But as the effects of climate change worsen, the chances for economic growth also deteriorate. Climate change  negatively impacts infrastructure, properties, health, and productivity levels. Today, it is experienced globally through extreme weather inconsistencies, warmer temperatures, and the rise of sea-levels. No one is exempted and no one can control it.

The biggest rain forest in the world burned for weeks while the world stood still. The Brazilian Amazon is home to numerous species of flora and fauna. Annually, it absorbs 5% of worldwide carbon emissions but the widespread fires reversed this purpose as it produced alarming rates of carbon dioxide emission per day. As negotiations are taking place to save the Amazon, Greta Thunberg, a 16-year- old Swedish climate activist  has claimed the spotlight through her call-for-action speech to combat climate change. She had every reason to do so as climate change continues to put everyone at risk, especially the economic status of every country. According to The New York Times , a warmer planet would have a great impact on G.D.P. up to the succeeding years. A warmer planet could replete agricultural lands, flood roads, flood infrastructures, and require more funding for adaptive measures in all levels of the society.

Why do you need to combat climate change?

Businesses could incur losses  due to changes in resource availability and cost, demand, and regulations. As a responsible leader and member of the company, you can oblige everyone to adopt environment-friendly practices that could save you from the profound impact climate change has in store.

To be one with environmental conservation, companies are required to at least acknowledge corporate responsibility and sustainability. This, in turn, legitimizes their initiatives and attracts more investors. Forbes  has predicted that investors will continue to pour interest in environmental initiatives and implored that companies should step up their game. Part of this responsibility is the environmental sustainability initiative wherein companies practice eco-friendly processes and sponsor green projects.

While doing all of these, companies could obtain a social license to operate, which means that the community will approve of them. Although this is not an actual license, the approval of society is necessary for a business to flourish. Some other benefits include cost-cutting, improving brand image, and obtaining a competitive advantage.

How can you save the future generation?

As an umbrella term, environmental conservation takes on many forms. It could be about directly protecting the environment or practicing methods that help conserve the environment. Companies could practice the latter by committing to environment-friendly strategies . If you want to start now, here are some tips in environmental conservation that you can adapt:

Conserving Resources

Renewable and non-renewable resources are both necessary to continue daily operations in any company. Renewable resources  such as wind energy, geothermal energy, and water are used daily to sustain the economy. One way to conserve resources involves purchasing or producing reusable products. Consumers prefer low-cost eco-friendly bags as it minimizes the use of plastic and paper. Purchasing reusable products for your company would also minimize acquisition and supply costs. To do this, you need to ensure that your company partners with eco-friendly and reliable suppliers.

If you are a restaurant owner, you could embody the said solution by choosing ingredients that are in season, while also adjusting your menu. You could train your staff  to practice going green and turn it into a habit. One way to start is by orienting them about the cause and rewarding them for achieving their milestones.

Non-renewable  resources such as oil, natural gas, and coal are often used in transportation, heating, and electric power production. Carpooling and mass transportation could help lessen the use of such resources. If your employees travel considerable distances to go to work, you can introduce them to said methods. You can adjust the company policy regarding transportation and also schedule the use of electrical appliances in the office if necessary.

If you own a courier company, you could practice more efficient ways of delivery by integrating digital technology  into their system. This could help reduce the time spent in tracking locations and delivering parcels through GPS and other logistical properties.

Practicing 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)

It is estimated that 4.40 pounds of waste  per person is generated daily. Since the accumulation of waste is difficult to avoid, the need to globalize 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) was realized. In detail, “reducing” begins by examining your consumption and waste generation. Afterward, you should identify which ones are unnecessary. “Reusing” simply entails that you should learn how to reuse items like the back of a paper and not immediately throwing it away. Lastly, “recycling” suggests that transforming the purpose of an object like turning drinking bottles into jars should be done.

Although it may seem simple, the process will begin after learning. You may start with a seminar focused on environmental conservation and workshop the company plan after the learning process. Starting to procure environment-friendly materials for the office such as recycled bags and kitchen utensils could also mark your journey to environment-friendliness. You may practice the use of dispensers and initiate a bring-your-own-mug to work program to reduce the use of disposable materials.

Another part of 3Rs is the segregation process. As you are already aware, there are several ways to segregate trash. Two of these methods are color-coding your trash bins and labeling them with glass, plastic, paper, and organic and the two-way segregation between biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. Note that this is also part of the reduction process that enables you to distinguish between reusable and recyclable items.

If you are planning to expand your business soon, you may also opt to partner with environment-friendly suppliers to use eco-friendly materials in your new space. This will diminish the use of toxic materials and ensure the safety of your employees.

Going Paperless

You can integrate e-processes in your business and reduce the time of preparation and implementation of projects by going paperless. Papers are primarily used for reports, communications, and contracts, which is why it has become an integral part of businesses. A study  estimated that about 800 million pounds of paper are used in the U.S. daily, which is enough to build 25,000 houses. People spend a lot of money on paper, but today, it is possible to reduce this cost by switching to software solutions, electronically processed documents, and digital filing systems.

Digital filing systems and electronically processed documents go hand in hand. You can start by scanning existing documents to file and access them more efficiently. This is going to take some time but once you establish a database, new documents will be easier to scan and file. You can invent a filing system that suits your company or partner with experts to obtain an efficient database.

Software solutions vary from internal communication systems to sustainability reporting solutions. By procuring internal communication systems, your company will be able to secure all of your communications and avoid data leakage. Sustainability reporting solutions, on the other hand, are mostly utilized by future-forward companies that are striving to perform better in terms of sustainability.
