speech and language homework calendars

Are you looking for an easy way to send home activities for your speech and language students to practice their skills?  I have been using these calendars for years now, and have had great responses from my students and their parents!  I have a set of articulation calendars and a set of language calendars.  Both sets are updated every calendar year as well as at back to school time.  There are color versions of the calendars as well as black and white for a low ink option.  If you have access to color printing at your school, I suggest using the color versions- they are bright and fun!  The black and white versions are fun too, and students can color the pages themselves.

ARTICULATION

In the articulation calendars, students are asked to find a variety words that start with their sound and use their sound in connected speech in a variety of activities.  Here are some examples of daily activities included on the articulation calendars:

Each day on the calendar has a small icon in the corner that students can color in when they complete the task.

In the language calendars, students are asked to answer questions that focus on categorization, describing, story telling, analogies, idioms, synonyms, antonyms, plural nouns, past tense verbs, auditory comprehension for sentences, auditory memory, calendar vocabulary (yesterday, today, tomorrow, etc.).  Here are some examples of activities in the language calendars:

COMMUNICATION LOGS In each set of calendars, there is also a parent letter and communication log that can be sent home.  The parent letter describes how to use the calendars.  The communication log gives parents a chance to let you know what went well and what the student needed help with.

These calendars are available at my TpT store in a BUNDLE or you can purchase the articulation or language calendars separately.

Five Fab Freebies: Summer Speech & Language Materials

  • May 31, 2015

I know everyone is ready for the summer!  I have to be honest with you though, I am not looking forward to it!  You think I’m crazy, right?  Well, I’m currently 6 months pregnant and every day in the summer heat seems like an eternity for me.  While I generally love the summer, when I am pregnant, I do not!  Although I will probably drop off the face of the earth in August when baby #2 is born, I do have a couple of Five Fab Freebies posts for you planned in June and July, so please check back!  These are the great freebies that I’ve rounded up for you to help with your summer caseload:

1) Summer Speech-Language Therapy Ideas for Parents Handout by Natalie Snyders on TpT.  This one page free handout is designed for SLPs to send home to parents of elementary & middle school students for suggestions on how to practice good speech and language skills through games and apps.  This is a great option to send home over the summer or whenever parents ask for ideas on how to work with their children at home!

2) Summer Fun with Language Sampler from The Speech Space.  This is a sample of a larger product .  In this sampler, you will get: 6 discussion cards, 8 WH-question cards, 6 vocab cards with 6 matching definitions.

3) All Around the Campground Board Set by GoldCountrySLP.  This Candyland-style game board is just what you need for ages PreK through primary aged students. The game is open ended and can be used to address a variety of language.

4) Summer Homework Calendars from Speech Therapy Fun by Jennifer Bradley.  These speech and language summer homework calendars have daily suggestions for quick and fun activities.  If the student completes the entire week of activities, he/she gets to glue a star on the ‘I Did My Work’ chart.

5) Summer Speech Freebie: Gardening from Teach Speech 365.  This is part of a larger packet .  The freebie includes: vocabulary cards, categories, and past tense verbs.

Also, you might have noticed that this post went up on a Sunday.  I’ve decided to start posting these on Sundays in an effort to help you plan your week, rather than on Fridays when you’re probably winding down.  So, stay tuned for these FFF to go live on Sundays from here on out.  Have a great summer and stay cool!!!

Free Summer Speech Therapy Activity Calendar!

Some days, kids (and parents!) need a little help thinking of exercises that keep our kiddos busy this summer. Let this printable calendar be your guide to ideas and activities to improve speech and language skills. Simply print each month’s activity page and tape to your fridge!  Look closely, you and your kids may get a giggle or two with some of our suggestions!

Each day, your child can perform an exercise specifically tailored to his or her own particular speech disorder. In addition to working on specific sounds, each activity can be a helpful tool for children with the most common types of speech disorders including; articulation disorder, apraxia of speech, autism, cerebral palsy, cleft palate, Down’s syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, language disorder, speech delay or stuttering.  We have included a space at the bottom of each page to write the specific speech sound that your child is working on.  Is it R, S, T, L, CH or SH? These printable calendars are not designed to create stress or anxiety in your child, instead, just a creative way to fine-tune any speech disorders or challenges and have fun at the same time.

Here is our July calendar. You will notice that each Sunday is Fun Day!  Let us know what activity you choose for your Sunday! Perhaps we’ll add it to our activity calendars for next summer, we’re always looking for great ideas.

Summer Speech & Language Homework

speech and language homework calendars

Sending home homework can be a pain and in the past has taken me DAYS to put together!  One of the worst feelings is taking days upon days to put together summer homework packets and parents throwing them out because they are too difficult, take too much time or they didn’t want them in the first place!

Here are my 5 tips to sending home homework that will actually be used!

  • Send home a note 6 weeks before school ends asking the parents if they want homework.  I recommend sending this note home twice (around 6 weeks AND 4 weeks before the end of school).   Download my FREE note here . If the parents are truly interested in summer homework, they will send the note back.
  • Put together an easy and user friendly packet.  If it’s too difficult to understand or complete, it won’t be done!
  • Make the activities quick!  Summer activities should be less than 10 minutes 3-5 times/week.
  • Allow for vacations & be flexible.  Send homework that allows for vacations or off weeks!
  • MAKE IT FUN!  Who wants to sit and do boring homework over the summer?!

I have found that by using the five steps above, my students have come back with completed homework that they are proud of!  PLUS, all of my hard work doesn’t get thrown in the trash!

Now, if you don’t have time to create your own homework or scavenge through 1,000+ homework packets on Teachers Pay Teachers, here is a list of my recommendations.

Langua ge Homework for Speech Therapy

  • Includes directions to address language during six different daily routines (getting dressed, brushing teeth, eating, cooking, cleaning and playing), five different levels for each routine & parent note to explain the homework. Each level gets slightly more difficult starting at nonverbal (level 1) up to speaking in full sentences and answering difficult questions (level 5).

ARTICULATION

Articulation word lists.

  • Send home one of these word lists and tell your students’ parents to practice 5 of the words per day!

Articulation Homework Flip Books

  • Bundle includes 11 sounds or comes in smaller sound sets.  Includes parent letter home and 12 different phases for each sound.  Each phase includes directions, review of previous stage, new sounds to practice and 15 boxes to check off.

ARTICULATION & LANGUAGE

speech and language homework calendars

  • Includes 2 articulation calendars, 2 language calendars, 2 ‘I Did My Homework’ charts and 1 parent letter.

I hope this makes your summer homework planning a breeze!  Do you have any tips for planning summer homework?  I would love to hear them in the comments below!

Excellent Video instruction:

“Russian with Naya” is a video series that we recommend. There are new videos each week and it is great for beginners! Please watch and subscribe for updates.

Another great way to start learning Russian as a beginner is to watch the Russian lessons on YouTube by Victor Dmitrievitch Huliganov. (Those who understand Russian will understand the play on his last name.) His lessons are a combination of serious learning and humour, and most will find this a good combination to learn quickly. Each lesson is concluded with a joke or poem and then a song (yes, he does the singing!). On a serious note he is a highly regarded professor, but very eccentric and very, very funny with his accent and use of humour.

All the lessons of Series One and Series Two are now available on YouTube. You can search them by his name or by RL 101 and RL 102. The RL 101 series teaches the alphabet and the concepts behind it and the RL 102 series is for beginning grammar. Start here with the introduction to learning Russian:

Suggested Lesson Plan for beginners:

1- Daily lessons from “Beginners Russian” by Kudyma for consistent step by step instruction, with correct pronunciation by native speakers. This includes a full interactive online workbook and exercises!

2- Do the accompanying exercises daily and review on weekends: Use resources such as  http://www.russian.ucla.edu/beginnersrussian/student/home.htm . Use the “homework” to learn to master the alphabet, how to use numbers/counting, pronounce names/titles of relatives, how to tell time, and some other basics. This supplemental homework will take you further in your ability to put sentences and phrases together.

3-  Watch and review a video each week from the series “Russian with Naya” which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPXK91VMw2NoSVt0IxFetNw

In the sidebar you’ll notice even more videos from Naya and we suggest that you subscribe to this channel, and complete all the lessons. Good news–Naya is adding new videos each week!

4-  Print and write (cursive) the alphabet, two times daily until you can do it forward and backwards in your sleep, including cursive. Do the same with numbers.

Supplement your learning by watching each lesson in the RL 101 and the RL 102 series. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlJw08uMvE4

Many thanks for your ringing endorsement of my series and my humour, although of course I wasn’t aware of having used any of the latter… You’re very welcome to put up more of those if you feel like it.

Recently I got up to lesson 21 in the second series, but I don’t think I’m even one third of the way to what I really envisage in my mind for this series yet.

There’s also my blog http://www.huliganov.tv . I’d be honoured to swap bogrolls with you.
