English Dub Review: The Case Study of Vanitas “Love”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Now that the crazy crashed party is in the past, Vanitas and Noe are living with Luca’s rich uncle and spending time with their friends while they recuperate. Vanitas is totally in love with Jeanne, but denies their romance in public in front of Luca by claiming she was not in her right mind when she sucked his blood. Meanwhile, Noe wrestles with his own feelings as he ponders the concept of love.

The eighth episode of Vanitas opens with a confused Noe asking Vanitas to explain what love is, and that cringy interaction really set the tone for the rest of this week’s proceedings. The imaginatively titled Love is one of the slowest paced episodes I’ve seen of the show to date. There’s really not much that happens apart from everyone having a lot of romantic tension with everyone else. But hey, I guess that’s better than talking through a lot of exposition! (Although there is plenty of that, too.)

After the weird flash forward opening of Noe’s question to Vanitas, the episode starts out with a scene in which Luca, Jeanne, Noe, and Vanitas are eating a meal together in a fancy restaurant. Everything is going about as well as can be expected when Vanitas suddenly gets all weird and reveals that Jeanne has sucked his blood by showing everyone her mark on his shoulder. She gets all flustered and denies it while Luca is just shocked and offended. In the end, Vanitas backs down by saying it wasn’t her choice because she was in a magical kind of daze thanks to the curse bearers, but then Jeanne drags him outside to talk and Vanitas confirms that his story was just a bunch of bunk to save face.

The two of them have one of the most drawn out exchanges of flirting I’ve ever seen — if you can call it flirting. Vanitas just keeps acting creepy and saying dumb things in the most sleazy manner possible while Jeanne is a brick wall. They have negative romantic chemistry and that made it so bad to watch that it was almost good? Later on, Vanitas admits to Noe that he knows Jeanne will never reciprocate his feelings, but that he prefers it that way because he wouldn’t be interested in the type of person who’s interested in him. Yeesh.

Vanitas and Jeanne might not have the greatest it factor in the world, but Noe and Dom get to show off their own talents in this episode too! She starts sucking on his throat and then he ends up drinking the blood from her hand at the same time. I just—this show is something else. At least Dom and Noe seem to fit better together than Vanitas and Jeanne, even if that’s not saying much.

And of course, since this is an episode all about love, the show staff just had to throw in some bait for the Vanitas/Noe shippers out there, giving them a short dancing scene at the end because Vanitas is “too scared” to dance with Jeanne because he’s afraid of stepping on her feet. With so many weird couples and relationships it felt like this episode was just throwing things at the wall in hopes of something sticking. Blood! Unrequited love! Dancing! You’ll like one of these things for sure! Sadly, I didn’t really like anything that this episode gave us. None of these characters have much chemistry and they all act super melodramatic and dumb all the time (especially Noe). I definitely did not love Love .

Season Review: Velma Season Two

Ulf Claesson-

Why is a third season unlikely? The first season, for all the hatred it got (and I liked it!), attracted quite a huge audience, a substantial part of which is likely to return (to bitch and moan if nothing else, even though this season seems to be getting much better reviews.. so far), so unless the viewership for season two plummets (which is unlikely, as many will have a morbid curiosity in seeing how this season turn out) I think a third season is quite likely. And as I said, I liked season one. So bring it on. You know, I think this incarnation of the show actually will grow into a cult classic in years to come, pretty much like Mystery Inc has (no comparison, just pointing out that it, too, was met with less than enthusiasm at first, something which has definitely changed in recent years.)

The Case Study of Vanitas’ Complex Shipping Situation

Episode 7 of The Case Study of Vanitas introduces a messy love square that cumulates in a surprisingly progressive dance party.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Case Study of Vanitas , Episode 7, “Love,” now streaming on Funimation.

The creator of The Case Study of Vanitas Jun Mochizuki has been known for her penchant for portraying melodramatic relationships ever since Pandora Hearts , and this is also a major selling point of The Case Study of Vanitas . The entangled romance aspect of the story is on full display in Episode 7 of the anime, appropriately titled “Love”.

The Jeanne/Vanitas ship has been well underway ever since the non-consensual kiss in Episode 3 . It also helps that Jeanne fervently sucked Vanitas’ blood in Episode 4 when she was taken over by bloodlust, even leaving her mark on him. And Jeanne doesn’t even seem to hate Vanitas all that much.

But of course, this relationship is not as straightforward as one might think. At the end of this episode, Noe asks Vanitas what he loves about Jeanne, and while Vanitas mentions a lot of superficial things like her strength, her looks and how she is easy to tease, in the end, he says that he loves the fact that Jeanne would never love him back, as he won't love someone who also loves him. This hints at some self-loathing tendencies within Vanitas, as well as the way in which he displays his “hatred” toward vampires by curing them; aspects that are very likely related to his tormented past.

Vanitas’ feelings for Jeanne might not even be love. He claims that he doesn’t know what love is, but his heart quickens when he sees Jeanne and he interprets this as love. However, since Vanitas has no experience with romance, demonstrated by the very pubescent way he treats Jeanne, it's possible that he has misinterpreted his feelings.

Although Vanitas thinks Jeanne will never love him, this is not how the show portrays things. Jeanne constantly blushes when she sees Vanitas. She doesn’t dislike being around him and also agreed to suck only his blood from now on. Jeanne may also relate to Vanitas in terms of his self-loathing, as her reputation as a ruthless executioner makes her feel inferior. However, if she falls for Vanitas, then by his logic, he would stop loving her, so this seems like a doomed ship from the beginning.

To complicate things further, there is Noe, who is still quite innocent and knows very little about love. During their meeting where he is served his favorite dessert, tarte Tatin, he takes particular notice of Jeanne. When Jeanne drags Vanitas outside, fearing that he might expose her bloodthirsty secret, Noe feels lost and even abandons his dessert to go after them.

Noe then witnesses Jeanne willingly suck Vanitas’ blood and admits that he feels agony in his heart. While Noe attributes this feeling to also wanting to taste Vanitas’ blood in front of Domi, he may sense it’s something more, because he tries to invite Jeanne to a dance that night. However, he is interrupted by Domi, who clearly loves Noe and doesn’t want him to realize his true feelings. There might still be hope for Domi though, as Noe is used to sucking her blood and is still very obtuse about his feelings, so it might take a long time for him to realize anything.

If all these ships seem hopelessly heterosexual, don't despair, because the melodramatic love square cumulates in a very ingenious way as the foursome participate in a dance party that evening. Domi surprisingly invites Jeanne to dance in an attempt to stop Noe from falling further for Jeanne. While Noe and Vanitas watch, Noe also invites Vanitas to dance, as he thought he could teach Vanitas.

The dance scene is a wonderful moment that disrupts the heteronormativity in the series so far. The matter-of-fact way this moment is portrayed is refreshing. By not making a big deal out of this, the series is also making way (whether consciously or not) for more organic portrayals of same-sex interaction.

Hilariously, as the two same-sex pairs have their progressive dance party, Luca is the only one left on the sidelines, watching as the adults have fun and hoping that he can grow up soon enough to invite Jeanne, as he obviously has a massive crush on her.

It's worth noting that in the manga, it’s a bit more ambiguous who Noe is really jealous of, because it could be interpreted as either Vanitas or Jeanne. However, the anime’s editing makes it very clear that he has feelings for Jeanne, not Vanitas, and Dominique is the only one who notices this -- although this doesn’t mean that the Noe/Vanitas ship is going nowhere. The dance scene in this episode, plus Noe’s heartfelt confession from Episode 6 , solidifies their partnership as something that can potentially transcend distrust, perhaps even jealousy.

The Case Study of Vanitas Part 1 Ending Explained

The Case Study of Vanitas released its final episode for now

the case study of vanitas kiss scene

Published: 21 Sep 2021 2:26 PM +00:00 Updated: 20 Oct 2021 4:04 AM +00:00

The Case Study of Vanitas released its final episode for now. Thankfully, the second 12-episode cour is already confirmed, so returning to the steampunk vampire Paris is only a matter of time, and we just can't wait. Meanwhile, here's the ending of Part 1 explained:

The Case Study of Vanitas Ending Explained: What Is Ruthven's Plan?

The Case Study of Vanitas Part 1 Ending Explained

In Episode 11, Ruthven seriously injured Noé, making us worry about his fate; this happened because Noé proclaimed that he likes vampires and humans equally, as both are equally capable of good and evil alike. Without spoiling too much from the manga, it's important to know that Ruthven once shared this idealism but does not anymore, so he took Noé's remark rather personally.

The finale reveals that Ruthven decided to keep the young vampire alive for now. However, by attacking and drinking his blood, the vampire lord forced a terrible fate on Noé. At one single – an currently unknown -point in the future, Noé will have to obey one command by Ruthven, whatever it is.

Noé is forced to swear this oath, though it's strongly implied that he does not remember it, as he wakes up fine, with only his thirst for Vanitas' blood concerning him. At this point, we've no way of knowing what Ruthven is going to demand. However, given the way Season 1 started, I would guess that Ruthven is going to command Noé to kill Vanitas .

After all, Noé admits to that from the very beginning, and this is a major plot point that keeps fans interesting. Killing Vanitas seems so out of character for Noé so it would make sense for him to be supernaturally coerced, rather than do it out of his own volition. Hopefully, Part 2 and the ongoing manga will reveal the answer sooner rather than later.

It is clear that Lord Ruthven is not on our main characters' side, but we'll, unfortunately, have to wait a bit longer to discover his exact motivations.

The Case Study of Vanitas Ending Explained: Where Are the Main Characters Now?

The Case Study of Vanitas Part 1 Ending Explained 1

The dynamic between the main characters is still quite fragile, though they've settled into a rather comfortable companionship. Noé finds Vanitas intriguing, and he's very interested in his blood. Of course, given how Noé is an Archiviste, someone who can access a person's memory by drinking their blood, Vanitas has made it very clear that this is out of the question.

Vanitas' past will therefore remain a mystery for now, as what little he chooses to reveal is often disjointed and potentially unreliable. However, the anime and manga have a long way to go, so we can hope that more about him will be revealed soon.

As Noé is still ashamed of his lapse at a moment of extreme hunger, things between him and Vanitas are a bit awkward, but the two nevertheless embark on a new journey. This time, they're traveling to find out more about the infamous beast of Gevaudan. In the far away, snow land, an unnamed new character is revealed to be plotting their revenge.

Related: The Duke of Death and His Maid Ending Explained

Meanwhile, Noé's new friend, the chasseur Roland, is warned that his friendly disposition towards Noé will threaten his family, as he's supposed to be a vampire hunter first.

Jeanne has a lot to process, as her feelings for Vanitas remain more complicated than she initially hope, and it appears that the human has feelings for her as well, given how much of his blood he's let her consume. But is she a curse bearer? Neither Jeanne nor Vanitas were able to tell at the time, so this could pose an interesting tension later on.

While not particularly complex, the ending of Vanitas no Karte leaves a lot of questions and many plot points to be picked up at a later time. The new episode batch can't come soon enough!
