Licensure Requirements
Travel nurses coming from a compact state who wish to practice in North Carolina need not apply for a nursing license since North Carolina is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).
If you don’t have a license from an NLC state, you’ll need to apply for licensure by endorsement.
To apply, you’ll need:
- Name, location, and year of graduation from your basic school of nursing.
- State, year, and license number of original license by examination.
- State of current license and license number.
- Dates of employment and position(s) held for the last two nursing employers.
- All U.S. Member Boards in which you’ve ever been licensed.
- Social Security Number issued by the U.S. Social Security Administration.
- Verification from original state of license, and if different, last state practiced.
- Criminal Background Check conducted by the North Carolina Board of Nursing
It may take four weeks or more to receive your North Carolina nursing license, but you may be eligible for a temporary license while your application is processing.
A temporary license can be issued within the first six months of submitting the endorsement application and is valid for up to six months.
Licensure Fees
A $150 licensure fee is required for LPNs or RNs applying for endorsement.
APRN licensure fees include a $25 registration fee and a $100 initial approval to practice fee.
Nurse Licensure Compact Status
As of January 2018, North Carolina became part of the Nurse Licensure Compact .
Is North Carolina a Walk-Through State?
North Carolina is not currently a walk-through state.
North Carolina requires one of the following:
- 15 contact hours of continued education and 640 hours of active practice within the previous two years
- National Certification or Recertification by a National Credentialing Body recognized by the Board
- 30 contact hours of continued education
- Completion of a Board-Approved Refresher Course
- Completion of a minimum of two semester hours of post-licensure academic education related to nursing practice
- 15 contact hours of continued education and completion of a nursing project as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator to include statement of problem, project objectives, methods, date of completion and summary of findings
- 15 contact hours of continued education and authoring or co-authoring a nursing-related article, paper, book or book chapter
- 15 contact hours of continued education and developing and conducting a nursing continuing education presentation or presentations totaling a minimum of five contact hours, including program brochure or course syllabi, objectives, date and location of presentation, and approximate number of attendees
