How to Write a Winery Business Plan

A s consultants and custom crush winemakers, we work with seasoned and novice winemakers alike. When people think about making wine, they are sometimes ready to source grapes and start a wine label . However, making wine is only part of the process. The first thing we often tell aspiring vintners is that one must start with a business plan—because after all, making wine is a business. A common question relating to the business plan relates to winery finances. How do you build a budget? What numbers are important to consider? What data can give a readout of business performance? Mark Pisoni is a co-owner of Gravity Wine House and conducted investment analysis for his Master’s Degree while at Cornell University. We used that as a basis for assembling this blog post to give you some ideas for how to get started. The information was developed for wineries in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York, but can apply to anywhere. Starting a wine business is complex, with many moving parts.

Understand who you are

Understand who you are and, more importantly, who you want to be within the wine world. While this may sound trivial, a solid understanding of your own vision will make your position and purpose as a new winery clear to future collaborators and clients.

  • What region are you in? Will your wine labels carry a particular AVA or sub-AVA classification?
  • How does your sense of place influence your brand?
  • What type of wine do you produce? Do you have aspirations of expanding your repertoire? These insights may influence your budgeting and marketing strategies as you set yourself up for success for years to come.
  • Do you aspire to be a large or small winery based on your target production volume?
  • Do you have a winemaker? If not, contact us for winemaking services.
  • Is it important to have your own facility, or would a custom crush facility better meet your goals?
  • What price point/tier are you targeting for your wine?

Define your goals

This is another idea that may sound simple but is vital before investing money, energy, and effort into a business model that may not align with your broader aspirations. In defining your goals, first, consider where you are now and what things you bring to the table. Are there things you already do and/or have that you want to integrate into your new business plan? These may include a wine label already in production, an ongoing contract with a particular grape grower, or a connection to a particular cooper who is integral in the production of your barrel-aged wines.

Be ambitious but realistic. This is the time for honesty with yourself and your business partners about what you hope to achieve in the coming months and years. It may be useful to set a timeline and think about your goals as dreams with deadlines. In defining your goals, it is helpful to revisit the questions posed above. What metrics are crucial to reach to become the winery you strive to be? Try setting many smaller goals with tangible measures of success to build the foundation for your larger plans.

Write your business plan

Here comes the step you’ve been waiting for! Now that you know who you want to be in the wine world and the actionable steps for getting there, it’s time to create a scaffold to bring your business to life. Your business plan should begin with a broad summary of your business and drill down to details such as how you will price your consumer goods. You may realize you have missing information; for example, have you conducted a market analysis to determine how many competitors in your area produce the same varietals or considered competitor strategies for pricing wine?

The U.S. Small Business Administration has compiled business planning resources that can be accessed here , including further detail about market research and competitive analysis, writing your business plan, calculating your startup costs, and establishing business credit. For those who are serious, we recommend this resource as a platform for further research. For now, we recommend you consider the following sections as you create your plan:

  • Executive Summary: Who are you? Include your vision and mission statement here, along with a brief statement of your product or service and basic information about company leadership and location.
  • Company Description: Go into detail about your company. What consumers do you plan to serve? What product or service will you provide? What competitive advantages will make you a success?
  • Product and Service Description: What products and services do you plan to provide, and how are they different than what already exists in the market? This section may be combined with the one above depending on how much detail you need to provide.
  • Market & Consumer Analysis: An understanding of your competitors is crucial to your success. Conduct market research, assess trends, and consider what others do well and what you can do better. See Table 3 below for an example of market analysis from the Finger Lakes region in 2001 (see Table 3):
  • Operations: How will your company be structured? Describe the legal structure of your business.
  • Personnel & Management: Who will run your company? Consider an organizational flowchart to demonstrate the role of all team members.
  • Marketing, Sales, & Brand: Describe your plan to attract and retain a customer base. What are your sales strategies? Consider how marketing may play into sales.
  • Financial Data: Budgeting and financial projections are a must. To create an effective budget that will communicate that your business can be a financial success, you must be comfortable with financial jargon and concepts that will help you trace your expenditures and be clear on how your money will be used. Here are some helpful definitions to get you started. See Table 4 for an example of annual operating costs for a model winery.

Overhead Costs

The fixed expenses inherent to running your business that cannot be linked to your product or service. What are your overhead costs?

Variable costs

The expenses that change as a function of the quantity of service or product production. What are your variable costs?

Break-Even Analysis

A financial calculation that weighs the cost of a new product or service against a proposed sale price to determine where you will break even; total cost and total revenue are equal. Can you use break-even analysis to make informed decisions about services and products you plan to sell?

Internal Rate of Return (IRR)

A metric used to estimate the potential return of an investment. Think about this as a measure of profitability, reported as a percentage. Learn more here . Can you calculate the IRR of your projects?

Net Present Value (NPV)

The difference between cash inflow and outflow over a defined period of time. The NPV tells us how much money a project will gain or lose in today’s funds. Learn more here . What is the NPV of your project?

Keep in mind that the exact sections of your business plan may look different from this list. Perhaps you prefer a more succinct Organization section rather than separate Operations and Personnel & Management sections, or you want to add detail in additional subsections. Your business plan should work for you and clearly distill the comprehensive plan for your business and your needs.

Below is a breakdown of the average annual operating costs for Mark’s model winery referenced in Tables 1 and 2. The average operating costs were calculated under the annual equivalent cost method, with production at 1,850 cases in year one with an 850-bottle annual production increase to reach 9,250 cases in year five.

Perception is everything

Although “Marketing, Sales, & Brand” may already be included in your business plan, the perception of your business from the consumer perspective deserves additional attention. Take an extra moment to consider your brand. What brings your wine business to life for your clientele beyond the physical infrastructure you buy and the personnel you employ? What does your wine stand for? Out of countless bottles on the shelf, why should consumers choose you? Your winery will only be as successful as your customers are content with the product you provide. Pay particular attention to the front-facing aspects of your business; their ethos cannot be fully captured by your budgets or estimated expenditures, take time to maintain, and will be integral in your winery’s success.

The first step to writing your business plan is to describe the purpose of your winery business. This includes describing why you are starting this type of business, and what problems it will solve for customers. This is a quick way to get your mind thinking about the customers’ problems. It also helps you identify what makes your business different from others in its industry.

It also helps to include a vision statement so that readers can understand what type of company you want to build.

The next step is to outline your products and services for your winery business. 

When you think about the products and services that you offer, it's helpful to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is my business?
  • What are the products and/or services that I offer?

  • How do I differentiate myself from competitors with similar offerings?
  • How will I market my products and services?

You may want to do a comparison of your business plan against those of other competitors in the area, or even with online reviews. This way, you can find out what people like about them and what they don’t like, so that you can either improve upon their offerings or avoid doing so altogether.

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other wine shops.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t directly competing with your product or service. This includes other types of wine retailers, wineries, bars, and restaurants that serve wine. You need to mention such competition as well.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their business and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What type of wine shop are they?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you make it easier for customers to acquire your product?
  • Will you offer products or services that your competition doesn’t?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.  

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a wine shop business plan, your marketing strategy should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of wine shop company that you documented in your company overview. Then, detail the specific products or services you will be offering. For example, will you provide a wide variety of wine brands, locally produced wines, or specialty wines?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your plan, you are presenting the products and/or services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the site of your wine shop company. Document where your company is situated and mention how the site will impact your success. For example, is your wine shop located in a busy retail district, a business district, a standalone shop, or purely online? Discuss how your site might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your wine shop marketing plan is where you will document how you will drive potential customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your wine shop, including answering calls, helping customers make their selections, collecting payments, restocking inventory, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to acquire your Xth customer, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your wine shop to a new city.  

Management Team

To demonstrate your wine shop’s potential to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing wine shops. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act as mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing a wine shop or running a small wine brand.  

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statements.

Income Statement

An income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenue and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you sell wine by the bottle or the case and will you offer discounts for repeat customers? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets

Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your wine shop, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a lender writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement

Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and ensure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

When creating your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a wine shop:

  • Cost of equipment and office supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Other start-up expenses (if you’re a new business) like legal expenses, permits, computer software, and equipment

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your wine shop location lease or a list of brands you carry.

Viles Arboretum is a botanical garden in Augusta with 6 miles of trails and more than 20 botanical collections. It’s open daily from sunrise to sunset, and admission is free. There are 224 acres with all sorts of flora and fauna to discover. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the visitor center is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Viles Arboretum offers medicinal plant walks, and although the May 18 session is full, you can still register for the June 15 and Sept. 14 events, lead by herbalist, homeopath and flower essence practitioner Debra Bluth. Tickets are $25. Advertisement

The Mount Desert Land & Garden Preserve has four areas to explore on its property in Northeast Harbor: the Asticou Azelea Garden (dawn to dusk daily), the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden (noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday from July 9 to Sept. 8, reservations required), Thuya Garden (dawn to dusk daily, June 15 to Oct. 14) and Little Long Pond Natural Lands (hiking trails and carriage roads open dawn to dusk daily). What is a Vineyard Business Plan?

A vineyard business plan is a formal written document that describes your company’s business strategy and its feasibility. It documents the reasons you will be successful, your areas of competitive advantage, and it includes information about your team members. Your business plan is a key document that will convince investors and lenders (if needed) that you are positioned to become a successful venture.

Why Write a Vineyard Business Plan?

A vineyard business plan is required for banks and investors. The document is a clear and concise guide of your business idea and the steps you will take to make it profitable.

Entrepreneurs can also use this as a roadmap when starting their new company or venture, especially if they are inexperienced in starting a business.

Writing an Effective Vi neyard Business Plan

The following are the key components of a successful vineyard business plan:

Executive Summary

The executive summary of a vineyard business plan is a one to two page overview of your entire business plan. It should summarize the main points, which will be presented in full in the rest of your business plan.

  • Start with a one-line description of your vineyard company
  • Provide a short summary of the key points in each section of your business plan, which includes information about your company’s management team, industry analysis, competitive analysis, and financial forecast among others.

Company Description

This section should include a brief history of your company. Include a short description of how your company started, and provide a timeline of milestones your company has achieved.

If you are just starting your vineyard business, you may not have a long company history. Instead, you can include information about your professional experience in this industry and how and why you conceived your new venture. If you have worked for a similar company before or have been involved in an entrepreneurial venture before starting your vineyard firm, mention this.

You will also include information about your chosen vineyard business model and how, if applicable, it is different from other companies in your industry.

Industry Analysis

The industry or market analysis is an important component of a vineyard business plan. Conduct thorough market research to determine industry trends and document the size of your market. 

Questions to answer include:

  • What part of the vineyard industry are you targeting?
  • How big is the market?
  • What trends are happening in the industry right now (and if applicable, how do these trends support the success of your company)?

You should also include sources for the information you provide, such as published research reports and expert opinions.

Customer Analysis

This section should include a list of your target audience(s) with demographic and psychographic profiles (e.g., age, gender, income level, profession, job titles, interests). You will need to provide a profile of each customer segment separately, including their needs and wants.

For example, a vineyard business’ customers may include both wine enthusiasts and casual drinkers. A customer profile for wine enthusiasts might look something like this:

  • Wine enthusiasts are passionate about wine and are willing to pay a premium price for high-quality products.
  • They are usually well-educated and have disposable incomes.
  • Wine enthusiasts are typically between the ages of 25 and 50.
  • They often live in urban areas.

A customer profile for casual drinkers might look something like this:

  • Casual drinkers are those who purchase wine for occasional consumption.
  • They are price-sensitive and are looking for value wines.
  • Casual drinkers are typically between the ages of 25-64

You can include information about how your customers make the decision to buy from you as well as what keeps them buying from you.

Develop a strategy for targeting those customers who are most likely to buy from you, as well as those that might be influenced to buy your products or vineyard services with the right marketing.

Competitive Analysis

The competitive analysis helps you determine how your product or service will be different from competitors, and what your unique selling proposition (USP) might be that will set you apart in this industry.

For each competitor, list their strengths and weaknesses. Next, determine your areas of competitive differentiation and/or advantage; that is, in what ways are you different from and ideally better than your competitors.

Below are sample competitive advantages your vineyard business may have:

  • You offer a higher quality product than your competitors.
  • You have a more convenient location than your competitors.
  • You have lower prices than your competitors.
  • You offer better customer service than your competitors.

Once you have determined your areas of competitive advantage, you can use this information to develop strategies for marketing and selling your products

Marketing Plan

This part of the business plan is where you determine and document your marketing plan. . Your plan should be clearly laid out, including the following 4 Ps.

  • Product/Service : Detail your product/service offerings here. Document their features and benefits.
  • Price : Document your pricing strategy here. In addition to stating the prices for your products/services, mention how your pricing compares to your competition.
  • Place : Where will your customers find you? What channels of distribution (e.g., partnerships) will you use to reach them if applicable?
  • Promotion : How will you reach your target customers? For example, you may use social media, write blog posts, create an email marketing campaign, use pay-per-click advertising, launch a direct mail campaign. Or you may promote your vineyard business via a combination of these methods.

Operations Plan

This part of your vineyard business plan should include the following information:

  • How will you deliver your product/service to customers? For example, will you do it in person or over the phone only?
  • What infrastructure, equipment, and resources are needed to operate successfully? How can you meet those requirements within budget constraints?

The operations plan is where you also need to include your company’s business policies. You will want to establish policies related to everything from customer service to pricing, to the overall brand image you are trying to present.

Finally, and most importantly, in your Operations Plan, you will lay out the milestones your company hopes to achieve within the next five years. Create a chart that shows the key milestone(s) you hope to achieve each quarter for the next four quarters, and then each year for the following four years. Examples of milestones for a vineyard business include reaching $X in sales. Other examples include launching a new product/service, hiring new employees, and increasing market share.

Management Team

List your team members here including their names and titles, as well as their expertise and experience relevant to your specific vineyard industry. Include brief biography sketches for each team member.

Particularly if you are seeking funding, the goal of this section is to convince investors and lenders that your team has the expertise and experience to execute on your plan. If you are missing key team members, document the roles and responsibilities you plan to hire for in the future.

Financial Plan

Here you will include a summary of your complete and detailed financial plan (your full financial projections go in the Appendix). 

This includes the following three financial statements:

Income Statement

Your income statement should include:

  • Revenue : how much revenue you generate.
  • Cost of Goods Sold : These are your direct costs associated with generating revenue. This includes labor costs, as well as the cost of any equipment and supplies used to deliver the product/service offering.
  • Net Income (or loss) : Once expenses and revenue are totaled and deducted from each other, this is the net income or loss.

Balance sheet.

Include a balance sheet that shows your assets, liabilities, and equity. Your balance sheet should include:

  • Assets : All of the things you own (including cash).
  • Liabilities : This is what you owe against your company’s assets, such as accounts payable or loans.
  • Equity : The worth of your business after all liabilities and assets are totaled and deducted from each other.

Cash flow statement.

Include a cash flow statement showing how much cash comes in, how much cash goes out and a net cash flow for each year. The cash flow statement should include:

  • Cash Flow From Investments

Ukraine war latest: Russian forces take control of village in Kharkiv region - defence ministry

Russian troops are continuing to advance in the Kharkiv region - with the defence ministry claiming it had taken control of 12 settlements in a week.

A decorated Ukrainian pilot has been killed in action, the country's 831st tactical aviation brigade has announced. 

In a post on Facebook, the brigade said First Deputy Commander of the Aviation Squadron Lieutenant Colonel Denis Vasilyuk, was killed during a combat mission.

"We lost not just a pilot, but a reliable combat brother, a friend and just a wonderful and bright man," it added. 

He flew dozens of missions since the beginning of the war has has been awarded the Order For Courage medal. 

The medal is handed to members of the military for individual courage and heroism while rescuing people or valued materials while endangering their own life. 

A Ukrainian missile has been destroyed over Belgorod, the Russian defence ministry has said. 

It said the Tochka-U tactical missile was launched at around 9.15pm local time (7.15pm UK time). 

"Duty air defence systems destroyed one tactical missile over the territory of the Belgorod region," it added. 

Belgorod has been targeted several times, with attacks increasing in recent weeks. 

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has praised his forces' successes during his nightly address. 

The Ukrainian president said his troops had grown in confidence, particularly in the Kharkiv region. 

However, his message comes after Russia's defence ministry said its forces captured the village of Starytsia in the Kharkiv region earlier today - just eight days after a new Russian push in the area began.

"The occupier is losing its infantry and equipment, a tangible loss, even though, just as in 2022, it was counting on a quick advance on our land," Mr Zelenskyy said, referring to Russia's initial invasion of Ukraine in February of that year.

In the eastern Donetsk region around Chasiv Yar, a city seen as a key target in Russia's campaign, Mr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces had repelled a Russian assault. 

"Our soldiers destroyed more than 20 units of the occupier's armoured vehicles," he added.

Russia has claimed to have captured a "very valuable" British-made vehicle from the battlefield. 

In a post on Telegram, the defence ministry said the FV104 Samaritan evacuation vehicle has been taken but needs to be repaired. 

It claimed it was big enough to evacuate four people and carry a crew of two. 

It said it was "very valuable" and could be used as a "rare collection exhibit". 

It shared a video of the vehicle but Sky News has not been able to verify if it is a FV104 Samaritan. 

Five people have been injured in a Russian shelling attack in Kharkiv, the Ukrainian national police has said. 

A 13-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy are among those hurt, it said. 

The Russian military attacked the city at around 30pm, it added, with several hits recorded on residential buildings. 

"As a result of shelling, five civilians were injured, and civilian infrastructure was also damaged," police official Oleksandr Kobylev said. 

"Currently, two minor children are known to have suffered minor injuries. Necessary medical assistance is provided to all victims." 

A Russian attack plane has been shot down, a Ukrainian army brigade has reported. 

The 110th separate brigade said the Su-25 had been destroyed in Donetsk. 

It said it was the fourth Su-25 to have been shot down, adding it will keep issuing "flaming fines" to Russia for crossing into Ukraine. 

"Our sky will become hell for the occupant pilots. Our squad number will be a nightmare for them," it added. 

A Ukrainian sergeant has been stabbed in the hand by a civilian, the country's ground forces has said. 

In a statement posted on Facebook, the army said the attacker was detained and has been charged with attempted murder and obstructing the armed forces. 

The attack took place in the city of Sinelnikove, in the central Dnipro region, earlier today.

"A civilian committed an armed assault with cold weapons (knife) on the sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," the statement said. 

The sergeant, who worked for the territorial recruitment and social support centre, has been provided with "all the necessary medical care", it added. 

In Ukraine's second largest city, airstrikes have become a daily occurrence as intense battles continue. 

Russian troops have been pushing ahead with a ground offensive that opened a new front in northeastern Kharkiv region in recent days, putting further pressure on Kyiv's overstretched military. 

After weeks of probing, Moscow launched the new push knowing that Ukraine suffered personnel shortages, and that its forces have been spread thin in the northeast.

Two people were killed after Russian airstrikes hit Kharkiv on Friday as Ukrainian troops fought to halt Russian advances in the region.

The airstrikes targeted Ukraine's second-largest city during the daytime, injuring 25 people and killing two, according to Kharkiv's mayor Ihor Terkhov.

On Thursday, the air alarm sounded for more than 16 hours, a record since the beginning of the military campaign by Russia.

Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian power facilities in early 2024 disrupted 14% of Russia's oil refining capacity, according to the US Department of Defence.

The strikes pushed up domestic oil prices by 20-30% and forced Russia to halt exports to focus on meeting domestic demand, a report from the Pentagon’s intelligence agency said.

But it caused only a "negligible disruption" to the electricity supply for Russian civilians and the military, because of Russia's "robust generation capacity" and the level of power in the grid.

In Showtime’s A Gentleman in Moscow, Ewan McGregor plays Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, a charming aristocrat who is sentenced to life for the crime of being born into nobility. He is stripped of his titles, and summarily shipped off to spend the rest of his days at the grand Hotel Metropol in the middle of Moscow. The year is 1921; the Bolsheviks have just staged a successful revolution against the Tsarist regime, making people like Alexander enemies of the state. While other noblemen are lined up against a wall and shot, Alexander is allowed to live because of a cruel twist of fate: he once wrote a poem that was appropriated by the Communists. It’s like Bhagat Singh inadvertently inspiring the RSS with “Khayalon Ki Bijli.”

And so, as a 20-something who hasn’t worked a day in his life — “It is not the business of a gentleman to have an occupation,” he scoffs at the tribunal during his sentencing hearing — Alexander is stuffed into cramped servant’s quarters in the attic of the hotel, with the assurance that meals would be provided to him by the state on the condition that he doesn’t leave the Metropol’s premises. It’s a tough deal, but even though he never explicitly mentions it, it seems obvious that Alexander is grateful for not having been sent to a gulag instead. Based on the acclaimed 2016 novel by Amor Towles, A Gentleman in Moscow is about as perfect as prestige TV dramas can get — a bittersweet, life-affirming tale of triumph in the face of insurmountable odds.

Alexander’s aristocratic background and general air of superiority don’t exactly make him an instantly appealing character, especially when he’s surrounded by members of the working class who’ve suddenly been elevated in the eyes of Mother Russia. But that’s where McGregor’s performance comes in. Broader complications of playing someone across several decades aside, McGregor instills in Alexander an unwavering dignity, a twinkling sincerity, and endless empathy for others. We do not learn about his aspirations, nor do we hear about the life that he had imagined for himself. That would be too cruel, and Alexander has already experienced unreasonable cruelty. A Gentleman in Moscow doesn’t let him wallow, although it allows him a bout of sadness when he needs it. Almost in an act of solidarity, the show incarcerates itself along with Alexander, barely leaving his side as he surrenders to the reality of his new life as a prisoner in the country he loves so dearly. In his entrapment, he finds emancipation.

To penetrate the protagonist’s mind with such clarity would be difficult for any show to accomplish, but it is especially admirable here, because Towles’ towering novel would make frequent detours into the inner landscape of its protagonist’s psyche. Creator Ben Vanstone and his team strike a fine balance between the cruel irony of Alexander’s predicament, and his ability to make the most of his surroundings — he lives in relative luxury, while the world outside witnesses upheaval. “It is the business of times to change, and of gentlemen to change with them,” he says in one scene, having embraced life’s eternal truth, that go on it must, come rain or new regime.

A natural charmer — Alexander is well-versed in virtually all matters under the sun, including gastronomy, literature, and, somewhat significantly, apples — he makes friends everywhere he goes. And before long, he begins to view the hotel’s staff — the receptionist Vasily, the head waiter Andre, the barman Audrius, the seamstress Marina, and the chef Emile — as his family. Over time, they become equals, a transformation that the show symbolically communicates in a scene where thousands of wine bottles in the hotel’s cellar have their labels removed by the newly empowered proletariat. In the eyes of an aesthete like Alexander, it is an act of vandalism akin to Tchaikovsky being performed on a Casio keyboard.

But it is only when he befriends an unsupervised little girl named Nina — a long term resident of the hotel like himself — that Alexander truly evolves as a person. And in episode three — every episode functions as a self-contained story in itself — Alexander enters into a romance with a silent film star named Anna Urbanova, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead . What begins as a brief fling turns into an epic love story, as Anna and Alexander’ re-encounter each other across several years. We never follow Ana outside the Metropol’s four walls, but like every supporting character in the show — a glowering ‘villain’ named Osip gets perhaps the most resounding arc — she emerges as a fully fleshed-out person by the time Alexander is ready to make more active choices, following a lifetime of passively adjusting to whatever googly was hurled at him.

A Gentleman in Moscow is unflinching in its affection for its hero, rarely making the mistake to suggest that he is in any way at peace. Alexander might have adapted to his surroundings, but crucially, he hasn’t become acclimatised to them. Artfully filmed flashbacks project him as a more complicated man than we’d been led to believe, and McGregor grabs every opportunity that he gets to milk his melancholia. The world, as Alexander learns quite literally, waits for no man. On the outside, Hitler’s forces make inroads across Europe ; some years later, they are defeated. A few decades into his imprisonment, Stalin dies. But Alexander’s existence revolves not around the whims of the universe or the petty politics of man, but around his found family, which, in episode four, grows in more magnificent ways than he could ever have imagined.

This is, ultimately, a story about repression — a repression of emotions, of culture, of expression. Alexander experiences tremendous injustices, but he channels whatever resentment that he might hold in his heart by opening it up to others. This might sound like high praise, but watching A Gentleman in Moscow isn’t unlike watching The Shawshank Redemption for the first time. It’s the kind of show that can, with a well-placed wail of a cello, or a perfectly timed close-up, sweep you off your feet with its unique blend of old world charm, soaring romance, and immersive thrills.
