Aligarh Muslim University:
Course offered: BA hons in Women’s Studies
AMU offers a 3-year Bachelor’s in Women’s Studies with the goal to develop critical thinking on social issues and analyse how gender, race, ethnicity, class, caste and sexuality contribute to the construction of social, cultural and organic experiences for all genders.
With the help of this course, students can aim for higher education in Women’s Studies or other fields in Social Sciences and Humanities. They can also join NGOs and fellow organizations working towards gender equality.

University of Rajasthan:
Course offered: PG Diploma in Women’s Studies
UniRaj now offers a 1-year Postgraduate Diploma in Women’s Studies, which is divided into 2 semesters for students who have already graduated in a related or unrelated subject. The course aims at exploring the nature, scope and evolution of Women’s Studies and the issues and challenges it ensues.
The course fee is approximately ₹1500.
University of Lucknow:
Course offered: MA in Women’s Studies
Lucknow University offers a 2-year Post Graduate course in Women’s Studies to create an environment encouraging all individuals in the society to develop a just society that is inclusive, violence-free and discrimination while promoting the socio-economic empowerment of women by creating awareness.
The goal of the Course is to empower women in India to live with dignity , so they can contribute to society as valued partners in the sustainable development of the nation.
The total fee is approximately ₹32000 to 44000.
University of Madras:
Course offered: MA in Women’s Studies, Certificate in Women’s Studies
Started in 2013, the Department of Women’s Studies in Madras University offers a 2-year Postgraduate course and 1-year graduate certificate, respectively.
The Department seeks to highlight the role and contribution of women in society by developing a multidisciplinary curriculum, interdisciplinary research, collaborating with academic institutions domestically and abroad to promote cross-cultural research, networking with organizations and conducting skill development programmes for women to enhance employability, capacity building, awareness and other need-based programmes across different strata of society.
The average course fee for all courses is approximately ₹1000 – 3000
Indira Gandhi National Open University:
Course offered: Diploma in Women’s Empowerment and Development, MA in Women’s & Gender Studies, PG Diploma in Women’s & Gender Studies
IGNOU’s School of Gender and Development Studies offers a 1-year Graduate Diploma and 2-year Postgraduate course and 1-year Postgraduate Diploma in Women and Gender studies. The School aims at achieving gender justice and equity through analysis of human, social, cultural and economic development.
The programmes have been developed under two streams: Gender and Development Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies. Other focal areas include Women’s Studies, Literature, Law, Science, Agriculture and Arts and Media among others.
The average course fee is approximately ₹3000 to 14000 per year.
Banaras Hindu University:
Course offered: PG Diploma in Gender & Women’s Studies
The 1-year course is offered now by BHU. The central concern of this paper is to offer a broad outline of the nature and growth of the women’s movement in the modern age, covering issues pertinent to women’s emancipation, dignity and status.
Further, it seeks to familiarize students with major historical developments of women’s movement in their fight for freedom and equality. The paper is divided into four modules with a chronological canvas of the development of various women’s movements across the world in different socio-cultural and political conditions.
The average course fee is approximately ₹1 lakh .
University of Hyderabad:
Course offered: MA in Gender Studies
Hyderabad University offers the 2-year Postgraduate course under their Centre for Women’s Studies which aims at main streaming gender issues in teaching and research, creating a space for women to come together, facilitating gender analysis on critical issues.
Their key areas of work lie under women’s education, globalization and new economic policy, women and governance, women’s issues (both private and public).
The average course fee is approximately ₹8700.
Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS):
The Master of Arts under Women’s Studies is a 2-year Postgraduate Course which was launched in 2009, after concretizing on earlier experiences of teaching and research in Women’s Studies at TISS.
The course claims to have an organic link with the women’s movement along with struggles of all marginal groups in society, and is engaged with various academic disciplines to evolve a critical perspective on gender in society as well as in knowledge production.
The average course fee is approximately ₹88000.
Panjab University:
Course offered: MA in Women’s Studies and Development, PG Diploma in Women’s Studies
The 2-year Postgraduate course and 1-year Postgraduate Diploma respectively is available under the Department cum Centre for Women’s Studies & Development. The Department seeks both to interpret women’s experiences and change their conditions, through transformation of consciousness, social reforms and modes of action.
It seeks to interrogate the system of socio-economic-political and cultural subordination surrounding women, as well as influence, reshape and recast dominant ideologies. It seeks to be a catalyst that leads to transformation of an unjust, inegalitarian society into one where gender justice and equality are the norm.
The average course fee for Masters is approximately ₹ 8000 – 9400 and for Postgraduate Diploma it is ₹ 9000 to 11000.
Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University:
Course offered: MA in Women’s Studies, PG Diploma in Women’s Studies and Development
The 2-year Postgraduate course and 1-year Postgraduate Diploma is designed to provide an overview of the significance of women’s studies and the major issues concerning them. It seeks to create awareness of the factors and influences which led to the marginalization and the goal is to sensitize students on gender issues in the context of globalization, society, family and workplace.
The courses provide an opportunity for students to engage in research using feminist methodology and explore practical realities of gender concerns in today’s society. It prepares them to discover ways to effectively address concerns of women based on knowledge and insight into women’s issues. The average course fee for both courses is ₹ 32400 to 200440.
Bangalore University:
The 2-year Postgraduate course aims to familiarize students with key concepts, issues, and debates in Women’s Studies. To make them aware of the Women’s exclusion from knowledge and need for Women’s Studies as an academic discipline. It deliberates on the prevailing strategies of the growth of Women’s Studies in India and abroad.
The average course fee is approximately ₹15940.
University of Calicut:
Course offered: MA in Women’s Studies
The aim of the 2-year Postgraduate course is to impart knowledge about the basic aspects of Women’s Studies both theoretical and applied to enable students to critically analyse the socio-cultural, political and economic reasons for the position of women as a group in society.
The course provides theoretical, research and practical dimensions essential for the understanding and addressing the issues of gender inequality prevailing in our society.
The average course fee is approximately ₹ 950 – 7600.
Bharathiar University:
The 2-year Postgraduate course offered under the Department of Women’s Studies carries out research and activities in the community.

The 2-year Postgraduate course, 1-year Postgraduate Diploma and Doctorate in Women’s Studies is based around the objective to teach Gender and Women’s Studies in Academic Institutions Training faculties in gender training Institutions Gender sensitive development functionaries both in Government Organizations, Non-Government Organizations and Corporate sector Researchers in the field of Gender/Women’s Studies.

Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University
Course offered: MA in Women’s Studies, PG Certificate Course in Women’s Studies
The 2-year Postgraduate course and 1-year Postgraduate Certificate course in Women’s Studies is offered under the Tarabai Shinde Women’s Studies Centre, which focuses on women’s studies as an academic discipline that developed out of the need for the feminist movement to understand women’s secondary status in society.
The courses in Women’s Studies can help students get employment in education, research, journalism, NGO’s, government jobs in the Department of Women and Child Development and Department of Human Resource Development. It aims to play a vital role in the Fight for Equality through a feminist approach which was started by Late Mahatma Phule, Savitribai Phule , Tarabai Shinde, Periyar and Dr. B.R.Ambedkar etc.

Global Open University:
Course offered: M.A. in Women’s Studies
The 2-year Master of Arts (M.A) Degree in Women’s Studies offered by The Global Open University, Nagaland has been designed to meet the demands of the growing needs of experts in the fields of women’s empowerment, rural and urban entrepreneurship for women, education for women, women and child development etc. The average course fee is approximately ₹6000 to 24000.
S Kula Women’s College:
Course offered: Certificate in Women’s Studies
The 6-month graduate-level certificate course is offered under the Women’s Study Centre in S Kula Women’s College in Nambol, Manipur.
The objectives of the Centre are women empowerment through value-added education, to upgrade courses on women’s studies, conduct training programmes on women’s studies, spread awareness/sensitization programme about legal aids on women’s rights, research works on the topics related to women’s issues as well as documentation, compilation, publication and dissemination.

Final Thoughts
Women and gender studies continues to grow as a wide field and enables its learners to understand the society they live in better, while also introducing more spaces where the same knowledge can be professionally applied.
Gender studies challenges traditional views of sex and gender, and thereby students can learn how such binaries are harmful to various groups of people . Women Scientist Scheme-A (WOS-A)
Women Scientists Scheme-A (WOS-A) provides platform to women scientists and technologists for pursuing research in basic or applied sciences in frontier areas of science and engineering. The scheme plays pivotal role in gender mainstreaming as it not only prevents brain drain from S&T system but also train and retain women in the system. The scheme initially offers opportunity to work as bench-level scientists and ultimately open new avenues for permanent position in Science & Technology. The Scheme is open throughout the year.

(i) Ph.D. in Basic or Applied Sciences or equivalent degree
(ii) M.Phil/M.Tech/M.Pharm/M.VSc or equivalent degree
(iii) M.Sc in Basic or Applied Sciences/B.Tech/MBBS or equivalent degree Fellowship amount: Rs.55,000/- per month for first eligibility group, Rs.40,000/- per month for second eligibility group and Rs.30,000/- per month for third eligibility group

Ph.D. Admission Notification 2024
For the Academic Year 2024, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a Deemed to be University funded by Ministry of Education through UGC is announcing admission notification for Ph.D. Programmes across Mumbai Campus and Hyderabad, Guwahati & Tuljapur Off-Campuses.
Number of seats and core thematic areas of research: Total seats available for all the Ph.D. Progammes is 142. The core thematic areas of research and the number of seats available under each Ph.D. Programme are given below:
For TISS Mumbai Campus:

Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria:
(1) Those clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in any of three categories are eligible to apply for the admission to Ph.D. programmes:
Category-1: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. with JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor.
Catcgory-2: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. without JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Processor.
Catcgory-3: Eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme only and not for the for the award of JRF or appointment as Assistant Professor
(2) For admission to Ph.D. in Social Work, clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in the subject of Social Work is the eligibility requirement.
(3) For admission to Ph.D., in Applied Psychology, clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in the subject of Psychology is the eligibility requirement.
(4) For admission to Ph.D. in Education, clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in any one of the subjects of Social Science discipline/allied fields, preferably in the subject Education is the eligibility requirement.
(5) For admission to all the remaining Ph.D. programmes mentioned in Serial Numbers 4 to 17, clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in any one of the subjects of Social Science discipline/allied fields is the eligibility requirement.
(6) Those students who are having valid JRF prior to 2024 in Social Work, Psychology are also eligible to apply for Ph.D. in Social Work and Ph.D.in Applied Psychology respectively. The valid JRF holders prior to 2024 in any subject of Social Science discipline/allied fields, preferably in Education are eligible to apply for Ph.D.in Education
(7) Those students who have cleared only NET prior to 2024 are not eligible to apply for any of the Ph.D. programmes.
Eligibility criteria of qualifying degree:
Candidates who have completed: A 1-year/2-semester master's degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed
Or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission from time to time.
Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission from time to time.
Selection criteria for Ph.D. admission:
(1) For those students with category 2 and category 3 of UGC-NET 2024, 70% weightage is given to their NET score and 30% weightage is to their performance in the personal interview
(2) For those students who are having a valid JRF (JRF prior to 2024 or JRF of 2024), the selection will be done based on the personal interview only. The personal interview component carries 100% weightage. The students with JRF of 2024 may also apply with their NET score along with category 2 and category 3 students where both NET score and score in Personal interview will be the selection criteria.
(3) Reservation* – Tata Institute of Social Sciences is Deemed to be University funded by Ministry of Education through UGC and follows all the norms and regulation of Government of India with respect to reservation policy. According to this, in the Central Universities and Institutions which are deemed to be Universities, the reservation of seats shall be as follows:
i. 15% of the seats for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates.
ii. 7.5% of seats Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates.
iii. 27% of the seats for Other Backward Classes (OBC) Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) candidates as per the Central List
iv. 10% of the seats for General-Economically Weaker Sections (General- EWS) candidates.

Mode of Ph.D. Programme: Ph.D. Programmes are offered in Full-time and Part-time mode. Both the full-time and part-time Ph.D. programme are offered only through regular mode. TISS does not offer any Ph.D. programme in distance mode.
TISS follows all the guidelines and norms issued by the University Grants Commission from time to time in regulating the Ph.D. programmes such as “ University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022.
The full-time and part-time Ph.D. programmes follow uniform standards such as successful completion of coursework, regular presentations before the Research Advisory Committees, stipulated time period to complete Ph.D., the evaluation and assessment methods of coursework and thesis. The Ph.D. degree certificate or Ph.D. award certificate of TISS does not make any distinction between full-time and part-time Ph.D. and both are treated equally.
The part-time Ph.D. students are working professionals who join Ph.D. programme by obtaining a No Objection Certificate from their organizations/employers that assures them providing leave and other support to complete the Ph.D. work. Those students who wish to apply under part-time Ph.D. mode are required to submit a NOC from their employer/organization clearly mentioning that (i) The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis. (ii) His/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research. (iii) If required, he/she will be relieved from the duty to complete the course work.
TISS encourages professionals working in development sector, government employees, people working with grassroot organizations and corporate groups to join its Ph.D. programmes through part-time mode.
The full-time Ph.D. students are not working professional and devote their full time to the Ph.D. research. They are mostly receipts of various fellowships/scholarships and are required to put their attendance on daily basis in the Attendance Register maintained in the Doctoral Students’ Office (DSO) of the Institute. They are also required to attend the research seminars, talks arranged on regular basis by their schools and the DSO. Whenever, the full-time Ph.D. students get a job, they can request for converting their Ph.D. into part-time Ph.D.
Ph.D. Coursework : All the selected candidates for Ph.D. programme – both part-time and full-time are required to successfully complete the Ph.D. coursework which is a minimum of 12 credits, including a “Research and Publication Ethics” course as notified by UGC vide D.O. No. F.1- 1/2018(Journal/CARE) in 2019 and courses on qualitative, quantitative research methodology.
A Ph.D. scholar must obtain a minimum of 55% marks or its equivalent grade in the UGC 10-point scale in the course work to be eligible to continue in the programme and submit his or her thesis.
The Ph.D. Coursework will be offered in off-line regular classroom mode during the first semester of the Ph.D. programme. The part-time Ph.D. students may join regular classes along with full-time Ph.D. students or they have to attend the Ph.D. coursework that will be organized in six modular workshops in regular off-line mode spread across the first semester.

Established in July 1999, the Centre offers M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Women’s Studies. The overall approach to Women’s Studies in this Centre is multidisciplinary. The prime aim of the Centre is the creation of a critical awareness and sensitivity towards women’s issues in every field. The courses are open to students across genders. A holistic approach to gender studies is envisaged. It encourages women’s academic development and empowerment, the major objective being women’s empowerment, the marking out and the definition of a feminist space.

Academic Programmes
M.phil programme in women’s studies.
The year 2012-13 marked a new beginning for CWDS with the initiation of a collaboration between Ambedkar University Delhi and CWDS. The M.Phil. programme in Women’s and Gender Studies was formally launched in 2012 with the first batch of students. The MoU, initially for a period of 5 years, was renewed in 2017 for a 3-year period.
This Programme is now in its seventh year. Faculty from the two institutions collaborate in teaching, supervision and co-ordination of the Programme, at all levels and the relevant committees are in place for the same. The degree is awarded by AUD since CWDS is not a degree granting institution. The degree certificate carries the names and logo of both institutions. CWDS faculty are recognized as full time regular faculty for the purpose of this Programme as per UGC Guidelines, 2016.

Ph.D Programme in Women’s Studies
The Ph.D. programme was initiated in 2013. At present there are 28 students who are registered for the programme and 1 student has submitted her dissertation in July 2018. The Sub-Committee on Women’s Studies at CWDS meets regularly to review and advise the programme.
Direct PhD Eligibility: MPhil in Women’s and Gender Studies or in a related Social Sciences or Humanities discipline, OR Masters degree with at least 55% in aggregate (50% for SC/ST/PD applicants) along with at least two years’ relevant ‘practical’ experience or research engagement and/or publications in the related field.

Short-term Courses
The Centre conducting intensive Research Methodology and Training Courses for research/ post graduate scholars with support from the ICSSR, along with short term courses in Women’s Studies.
