2. Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle With India – Joseph Lelyveld

1- The Story of My Experiments with Truth by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

In 1940, Father of Nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi wrote his autobiography 'The Story of My Experiments with Truth' where he covered his life from childhood days to 1921. In 1998, a committee of global spiritual and religious authorities designated it as one of the "100 Best Spiritual Books of the 20th Century".

I feel great honour and privilege to write down in my blog about 10 famous and inspiring personality of India.

They are not just 10 renowned and inspiring leaders but also great human-beings of our country India.

I am writing this so that all readers and English learners who try to deliver speech in there spoken English classes, can enhance not only grammar knowledge but also their communities skills.

1. DR. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

We all know him as a nuclear scientist and the missile man. A. P. J. Kalam was born in 1931, at Rameshwaram, Tamilnadu. His full name was Abul Pakir Jainul Abideen Abdul Kalam, it’s really a big name as he did the big work for our nation.

He was the son of a little educated boat owner. Whose name was Jainulabideen Ashiama. He had done his primary school in Ramanathapuram district. He completed his diploma in Engineering from Indian Institute Technology, Chennai.

He went to ISRO where he became the project Director SLVB. He got Bharat Ratna for his great success in Agni, Prathvi, Akash, Trishul and Nag missiles research. He built up name of our nation in the world. For this, we all indians feel proud of him.

APJ Kalam was not just a scientist but also he was a great poet, the President, music lover. He was such a great leader who led from the front. He passed away on 27 July in 2015.  He was the inspiration for millions of youths in and around the world. He was one of the 10 renowned and inspiring personality of India.

2. Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2nd October at Porbandar, Gujarat in the year of 1869. He belonged to well-to-do family.

His father was Karamchand Gandhi. His mother’s name was Putlibai. His devoted wife was Kasturba. He was much fond of playing Gilli-Danda.

He went to England in 1888 and came back to India as a Barrister in 1891. He fought for Indians in South Africa.

He was the part of many movements, such as Satyagraha in Champaran (Bihar) in 1917. Then he became the part of Quit India Movement in 1942.

He tried to help the people. He always fought for their rights. He had no weapon except non-violence. He got India freed from the clatches of Britishers in 1947.

He was called Bapu in fondly by people. In fact, he was the father of nation.  He is no more with us but his teachings always remain in this soil. He died in 1948.

3. Mother Teresa

Do you know ? Mother Teresa’s real name was Agnes, and she was born on 27 of August in 1910 in the country of Yogoslavia in Europe. She was unusually generous and kind hearted since her childhood. She couldn’t see anyone in pain.

She joined the Christian mission as, she was keen interest in serving the destitute and poor people when she was only seventeen years old.

She was impressed by the ancient culture and heritage of India. She came to Kolkata in 1929. She got a job as a teacher in St. Mary’s school on Rifan Road in Calcutta (Kolkata).

In 1931 she was Christened and now was known as, ‘Teresa’. Her students began to call her as sister Teresa. She did a great job for the welfare of the poor.

She got Indian citizenship in 1948. She started moving to city slums to provide help. She adopted thousands of orphan children and she brought them up.

Now she was known as ‘Mother Teresa’. She went to the houses of the sick and the people who were in great trouble. She looked after them.

She also opened a free school for the poor children and started teaching them. She had read about personality like, Ramkrishna paramhansa, Swami Vivekanand, the Vedas and Upanishads.

She founded the “Missionaries of Charity”. She helped poor with gifts of clothes, blanket, medicines and food. She left us on 5th September 1997.

4. Swami Vivekanand

Swami Vivekanand was a model of inspiration for the young. He came into this world on 12th January 1863 in Calcutta (Kolkata).

He was founder of Ramkrishna mission and Ramkrishna Math. His real name was Narendranath Dutta. He was an Indian monk and philosopher. He was the chief disciple of (Guru) Sri Ramkrishna paramhansa.

He is one of the greatest men who have ever appeared on this planet. He guided with the message of spirituality and harmony and peace. He preached in the light of the teachings of his guru, Sri Ramkrishna paramhansa.

He went to America, Chicago to attend the religious conference at the platform of parliament in 1893 that too, when he was just more than thirty years of age.

Swami Vivekanand belonged to the 19th century even then his ideas, thoughts, message and his life was more relevant today.

And this I will do or die. Then he says, “My faith is in the younger generation, the modern generation, out of them will come my workers.”

He had given so many of quotes and ideas that are enough for anyone to rediscover himself/herself. Many of the great personality of India said very nice things about Swami Vivekanand and his dynamic personality. He took his last breath on 4th July 1902.

 5. Bhagat Singh

Many of our heroes laid down their lives for the freedom of our country that said to cover ninety years right from 1851 to 1947.

Bhagat Singh was one of the freedom fighters who laid down his life for the sake of nation’s independence.

Even if he spent a very short political span, he sacrificed his life for the noble cause. He was brave and energetic person.

When he was asked to marry he said, he got married in the slave India and death would only be his bride. His political guru was Vidya Shankar.

Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt dropped two boms in the assembly hall. He raised his slogan “Inqlab Zindabad”. They couldn’t try to scape from police but surrendered themselves.

I think, he was the real hero of our country. On 23rd March, 1931, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were put to death by British government. His history has become legend. He will always be remain in our heart.

6. Dhiru Bhai Ambani

Dhiru Bhai Ambani was one of the top most businesses tycoons of our country. He born on  28th December 1932. He was extraordinary human being and awesome leader. He was a successful business man and entrepreneur. He was the founder of Reliance textile, float textile, orky Silk Mills and Reliance industries.

He had the courage to dream big. He not only dreamt but also made his dreams come true just by dint of his firm determination.

When he came to India, he had a few thousand rupees in his pocket dreamt to start his own oil company. He created a world petrol-chemical and energy company.

The 60,000 crores Reliance Group is living example to his dedication towards his work and firm determination to his goals.

The philosophy he followed was short and simple “Think big, Think differently” 

Man like Dhiru Bhai Ambani is rare. He came gifted with the power and vision to change the destiny of nation. He came from ordinary family background and achieved extraordinary things.

He was making the people think big, think fast and think ahead. That was I think, was the secret of his success Mantra.

7. Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan is the legend actor of Indian cinema. He is one of the charming and loving silver screen actors in Bollywood industry, he is the combination of greatness and popularity.

His countless fans call him as The big B. Earlier people used to call him Lamboo as his height is more than the average Bollywood actors.

He is the superstar of Bollywood film. He had started his acting journey with the movie “Saath Hindustani” which was released in 1969 as a tall, funky youngstar.

But he had left the lasting impression in the mind of viewers with the film ‘ Zanjeer’ in the early seventies, the first blockbuster with Amitabh Bachchan playing the main role.

Then he had given so many super- duper films after films such as Sholay, Deewar, Amar Akbar Anthony, Mukaddar ka Sikandar, the Great Gambler etc.

He is the son of famous Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Amitabh Bachchan was born in Allahabad on 11 October 1942.

He had his early education in Doon School and higher education in Kirore Mal college Delhi.

Not only on silver screen but also on Telivision, he came the first choice of the TV viewers too. He hosted ‘Kaun Banega crorepati’ which is so popular reality show.

8. Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was one of the 10 Famous and inspiring personality of India. He was veteran BJP leader. He was the 13th prime minister of India too.

He was born on 25th December 1942. He was the true son of the motherland. He was born in Gwaliar in educated family.

He was the son of Pandit Krishna Bihari Vajpayee who was a school teacher. Atal Bihari Vajpayee did his study in Gwaliar. He did postgraduate in political science from Victoria College.

He became the prime minister of India when he was 75 years old. He had million of his admirers across the world. He was having a good command over his political career. He was loved for his quality of mind and soul.

He was a linguistic. It means he knew many languages. He could write and read. He was basically a man of peace. No doubt, he did great job during his premiership.

His name will be written in golden letters in the history of India. He passed away on 16 of August 2018.

9. Kalpana chawla

Kalpana chawla was born in Karnal, Haryana but became a U. S. citizen after he married to an American flight instructor Jean-Pierre Harrison.

So she is called an Indian-American. She graduated from Tagore school Karnal. After this she joined an engineering college. She earned her ph.D in aerospace engineering.

After qualifying as a pilot, she applied to NASA for space shuttle program. It was her success as a pilot that gave her idea that she could be an astronaut.

She was first hired as a research scientist. In 1994, she selected by NASA for training as an astronaut among others. Thus she became the first Indian-American woman astronaut.

Chawla’s first space mission in the space was in 15 days, 16 hours and 34 minutes. They performed different experiments for a price tag of about 56 million dollars. When the news about Columbia disaster broke, there was shock and disbelief.

But it became clear that Kalpana Chawla had died. All others crewmen on the space had also died.

10. J. R. D. Tata

No doubt that JRD Tata was one of the 10 famous and inspiring personality in our country. He was born on July 29, 1904 and died November 1993 at ripe age of 89.

JRD. was different from almost all others men of his era became of his wife range of activities. He was the chairman of the largest industrial group in India Tata which produced everything from steel and electric power to chemical and automobiles.

He used to put in seventy five to eighty hours of work a week. That makes about twelve to thirteen hours in a day.

One of the most important aspect of his life was that he was a great and expert pilot. One of his hobbies was flying. He was keen interested in flying different types of aircraft.

He was the first chairman of Air India. Even at the age of seventy he pioleted his aircraft from Mumbai to to London.

He was capable enough to change difficulties into opportunities. That made him unique role model for his countrymen. He gave equally important to arts. He established the National Center for performing Arts. In this centre of excellence in all forms of arts is encouraged.

11. Munshi Premchand

Munshi Premchand is one of my favourite authors. His original name was Dhanpat Roy. He was born in a village in Uttar Pradesh in 1880 and died in 1936. He belonged to a lower middle class family.

I like him the most because there is nationalism and patriotism as well as humanism in his writings. He is the author who wrote both in Hindi and Urdu.

His voice is a new voice in India’s literature even today. ‘Seva Sadan’ Premashram, Rangabhumi, Purdah, Ghaban, Karbala, Nirmala, and Godan are his important writings. Due to his works, Premchand’s name is an unforgettable name in Indian literature.

Abraham Lincoln born on 12th February and brought up in  Kentucky where he did his meagre education as he has to continuously juggle between jobs and work for the sake of his family. He was known for bringing emancipation of slaves in the United States. Being a self-taught lawyer and legislator Lincoln became one of the great personalities of the American Civil War. He was the 16th President of the US just before the outbreak of civil war. Lincoln used an unconventional approach to being a war leader and addressed the problems and circumstances rather than simply bringing out new policies and laying out designs.

Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam also known as A.P.J Abdul Kalam is an Aerospace Scientist who bought in astonishing technical reforms in the country. He is known as the People’s favorite leader and Missile Man of India. He did everything needed for the nation’s civilian space program and military missile development right from introducing launch vehicle facility and ballistic missile to supporting 2nd round of nuclear tests at Pokhran.

A.P.J Abdul Kalam spent almost 40 years of his career in ISRO and DRDO as a Scientist and Administrator. After retiring from his post as 11th President of India(2002-2007) he became a visiting professor at IITs, IIM’s, and Several Universities to motivate students to compete with the world. While these two luminaries are monuments to the country’s independence struggle, there are a great many other Indians who have made tremendous contributions to the fields of politics, culture, entertainment, literature and much more.

The Indian independence movement was spearheaded by Mahatma Gandhi. He is regarded by many as one of history’s greatest leaders and was instrumental in guiding India toward freedom from British domination.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India. A nearby princely state’s minister served as his father. He completed his legal studies at University College London when he was a young man, working as an advocate in Bombay with some measure of success before coming home to resume his legal career.

After becoming known as an authority on Hindu law, he went on a lecture tour across India, discussing politics and religion. He also wrote several books that were eventually published, such as Hind Swaraj (1909), The Story of My Experiments with Truth (1925), An Autobiography, or The Story of My Experiments With Truth (1929), etc.

The Dalit Buddhist Movement was inspired by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, an Indian jurist, economist, politician, and social reformer who fought against societal injustice against Untouchables (Dalits) in India. Additionally, people call him Babasaheb. Ambedkar was the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and the country’s first minister of law after independence.

Ambedkar was raised by untouchable people (then known as Dalits). He was born into a group that had varying degrees of socioeconomic adversity as a result of their absence from Hinduism’s caste system, and as a result, he experienced prejudice from a young age.

The first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, was a remarkable leader who was instrumental in the Independence cause . He was also a superb writer and public speaker. Nehru was not only a leader; he also made contributions in the spheres of politics and education.

On November 14, 1889, in Allahabad, Jawaharlal Nehru was born (India). After completing his education at Cambridge University and Harrow School (London), he chose to study law despite his parents’ wishes for him to become an engineer (England). After arriving back in India from England, he enrolled at the Allahabad High Court and began practicing law there for 15 years before joining the fight to end British authority over India.

Indian industrialist J. R. D. Tata established the Tata Group of enterprises in 1868 and presided over it from 1932 to 1938, 1940 to 1953, and from 1957 to 1988. His father had traveled to Paris, France, where he was born on December 28, 1904. He passed away in Mumbai, India, on November 29, 1993, at the age of 88, following a chronic illness.

Tata is well-known for launching Tata Airlines (now Air India), the first commercial airline in India, and Air India International, the first steel mill in Asia (which became Vistara). In 1971, the Royal Aeronautical Society in the UK honored him for his groundbreaking contributions to the growth of civil aviation by making him the first Indian to be admitted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame.

Indira Gandhi, the first female prime minister of India, was a great leader. She served as prime minister from 1966 until her assassination in 1977 by her bodyguards. She was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru.

In many ways, she was an effective leader . She had a superb sense of direction, for instance, so that no one could ever get lost while following her (and this is why India is still on top of its game today). The crowds that gathered around Indira whenever she appeared in public were so sizable that it was impossible to manage them. She was also an exceptional speaker.

Satyajit Ray was an Indian film director , producer, screenwriter, lyricist, and composer. He was the son of Indiradevi and Ashoke Kumar Ray. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest directors ever.

The master storyteller Satyajit Ray has left behind a film legacy that is equally the responsibility of India and the rest of the world. His films show great humanity, in-depth observation, and deft handling of people and circumstances.

Satyajit Ray was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 1992. Other honors include the Indian ‘Bharat Ratna medal and the French ‘Lègion d’Honneur.’

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam , a scientist , and statesman served as India’s eleventh president from 2002 until 2007. In India, he is referred to as the ‘Missile Man’ for developing ballistic missiles and launchers.

He worked as an aeronautical engineer with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Defense Industries Department (DID), Liquid Propulsion System Centre (LPSC), and Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). He was instrumental in the development of the country’s nuclear, space, and missile programs (ISRO).

India’s most renowned playback singer is Lata Mangeshkar is one of the famous personalities of India. She began her career in 1942, and it has now lasted more than seven decades. Mangeshkar has sung songs in over 36 regional Indian languages and international languages, predominantly in Marathi and Hindi , for over a thousand Hindi film soundtracks.

The government of India presented her with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the country’s highest honor in the film industry, in 1989. The Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian accolade, was also given to her. According to the Guinness Book of Records in 1974, Lata Mangeshkar was the most-recorded musician in history.

The God of Cricket , Sachin Tendulkar, was a former captain and cricketer for India. He is recognized as one of history’s best batsmen. Before he ended his professional cricket career in 2013, Tendulkar played for the Mumbai squad from 1988 to 2013. He received the Bharat Ratna for his contributions to Indian cricket and athletics.

He is also the first male cricketer to score 200 runs in one-day internationals and has the most runs ever scored by an individual in test cricket (14927 runs) (ODIs).

AR Rahman is an Indian composer, singer, songwriter, music producer, musician, multi-instrumentalist, and philanthropist. He was born on January 6, 1967, in Madras, Tamil Nadu. When Rahman was four years old, he started piano lessons and helped his father at the studio.

The much-anticipated break came in 1992 when director Mani Ratnam asked AR Rahman to write the score and soundtrack for the Tamil film Roja, for which he received his first National Award for best music director. Initially, AR Rahman wrote soundtracks for documentaries and jingles for TV commercials. For Slumdog Millionaire in 2009, he received Grammy, Bafta, Golden Globe, and Academy Award nominations.

On Indian soil, many famous people have been born. The immortal people in India, from ascetic thinkers to outstanding mathematicians and successful businesspeople, make the nation proud of its people.

The list includes Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Kalidas, Tulsidas, R. Tagore, Mirza Ghalib, Madhavikutty, S. Bharti, Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy, Vikram Seth, and many others. Indians who fought in the Great War and died defending their nation from foes continue to be remembered as the war’s origin country. Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Mother Teresa, Rani Laxmi Bai, Indira Gandhi, and others are among these amazing people.
