How Long is an Essay? Guidelines for Different Types of Essay

Published on January 28, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on July 23, 2023.

The length of an academic essay varies depending on your level and subject of study, departmental guidelines, and specific course requirements. In general, an essay is a shorter piece of writing than a research paper  or thesis .

In most cases, your assignment will include clear guidelines on the number of words or pages you are expected to write. Often this will be a range rather than an exact number (for example, 2500–3000 words, or 10–12 pages). If you’re not sure, always check with your instructor.

In this article you’ll find some general guidelines for the length of different types of essay. But keep in mind that quality is more important than quantity – focus on making a strong argument or analysis, not on hitting a specific word count.

In an academic essay, the main body should always take up the most space. This is where you make your arguments, give your evidence, and develop your ideas.

The introduction should be proportional to the essay’s length. In an essay under 3000 words, the introduction is usually just one paragraph. In longer and more complex essays, you might need to lay out the background and introduce your argument over two or three paragraphs.

The conclusion of an essay is often a single paragraph, even in longer essays. It doesn’t have to summarize every step of your essay, but should tie together your main points in a concise, convincing way.

The suggested word count doesn’t only tell you how long your essay should be – it also helps you work out how much information and complexity you can fit into the given space. This should guide the development of your thesis statement , which identifies the main topic of your essay and sets the boundaries of your overall argument.

A short essay will need a focused, specific topic and a clear, straightforward line of argument. A longer essay should still be focused, but it might call for a broader approach to the topic or a more complex, ambitious argument.

As you make an outline of your essay , make sure you have a clear idea of how much evidence, detail and argumentation will be needed to support your thesis. If you find that you don’t have enough ideas to fill out the word count, or that you need more space to make a convincing case, then consider revising your thesis to be more general or more specific.

The length of the essay also influences how much time you will need to spend on editing and proofreading .

You should always aim to meet the minimum length given in your assignment. If you are struggling to reach the word count:

  • Add more evidence and examples to each paragraph to clarify or strengthen your points.
  • Make sure you have fully explained or analyzed each example, and try to develop your points in more detail.
  • Address a different aspect of your topic in a new paragraph. This might involve revising your thesis statement to make a more ambitious argument.
  • Don’t use filler. Adding unnecessary words or complicated sentences will make your essay weaker and your argument less clear.
  • Don’t fixate on an exact number. Your marker probably won’t care about 50 or 100 words – it’s more important that your argument is convincing and adequately developed for an essay of the suggested length.

Receive feedback on language, structure, and formatting

Professional editors proofread and edit your paper by focusing on:

  • Academic style
  • Vague sentences
  • Style consistency

In some cases, you are allowed to exceed the upper word limit by 10% – so for an assignment of 2500–3000 words, you could write an absolute maximum of 3300 words. However, the rules depend on your course and institution, so always check with your instructor if you’re unsure.

Only exceed the word count if it’s really necessary to complete your argument. Longer essays take longer to grade, so avoid annoying your marker with extra work! If you are struggling to edit down:

  • Check that every paragraph is relevant to your argument, and cut out irrelevant or out-of-place information.
  • Make sure each paragraph focuses on one point and doesn’t meander.
  • Cut out filler words and make sure each sentence is clear, concise, and related to the paragraph’s point.
  • Don’t cut anything that is necessary to the logic of your argument. If you remove a paragraph, make sure to revise your transitions and fit all your points together.
  • Don’t sacrifice the introduction or conclusion . These paragraphs are crucial to an effective essay –make sure you leave enough space to thoroughly introduce your topic and decisively wrap up your argument.

How Many Pages Is 50,000 Words?

/ By Alan Reiner

/ September 6, 2022

Trying to figure out how many words you can fit on a page is tricky, and there are a lot of factors that go into it.

How Many Pages Is 50,000 Words?

This is especially true with longer pieces of text, and knowing how many pages you’ll need for a longer text like a novel can be confusing.

Luckily, we’ve done all the hard work for you already!

In this article, we’ll take a look at how many pages you’ll need to fit 50,000 words, along with some examples of 50,000 word texts and how you can write that much yourself!

So How Many Pages Is 50,000 Words?

When trying to figure out how many pages you need for 50,000 words, it’s hard to find a definitive answer.

There are several things that can influence this, meaning that there’s a fairly substantial range that the page count can come under.

For a double-spaced, size 12 font piece of writing, 50,000 words can fit in anywhere from 180-220 pages.

The general rule of thumb is 200 pages, but you might need more or less depending on things like word length, formatting, and other influences.

Similarly, a single-spaced 50,000 word piece of writing typically comes to around 100 pages in length.

What Factors Can Affect This Page Count?

As you may have noticed, 40 pages is quite a margin of difference – so why can the number of pages needed for 50,000 words vary so much?

Well, there are actually a couple of reasons why this is the case.

The most obvious factor at play is the length of the words used.

The average length of a word in a piece of text is approximately four letters, or around six to seven characters.

This lets you fit around 250 double-spaced words per page, which can be scaled up to 200 pages for 50,000 words.

However, if the majority of words in the text are longer/shorter than average, this can affect the total number of pages used.

Characters also play a role here, in a similar way to word length.

The difference here doesn’t have as much as an effect, but using more characters in a text can influence the amount of space used and either increase or decrease the number of pages.

Dialogue, in particular, is one of the biggest factors when it comes to how many pages you’ll need for 50,000 words .

Each line of dialogue is supposed to start on a new line; as a result, long conversations can easily take up lots of space very quickly.

Is 50,000 Words A Lot?

While 50,000 words can seem like a massive amount, in the grand scheme of things it isn’t really all that much.

When it’s put in the context of being around 200 pages, it feels like a lot less compared to larger books.

That’s not to say that writing 50,000 words still isn’t impressive, though, and it takes a lot of time and effort to hit that target.

Is 50,000 Words Novel-Length?

While novels tend to be longer than 50,000 words, you can still find novels out there that float around the 50,000 word count .

In fact, 50,000 words is often to be considered the minimum length for a novel, with anything below that falling into a novella or short story.

In general, a novel will tend to come in at anywhere from 80,000 to 100,000 words.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that a book slightly above or below this range can’t be a novel, just that the standard novel length is generally accepted to be around 100,000 words.

What Does 50,000 Words Look Like?

To help put things in perspective a bit more, let’s take a look at some examples of real-life 50,000 word stories.

Some of the more famous books out there that are around 50,000 long include The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (47,000), Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk (49,926), Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut (49,459), and The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks (52,000).

You can also think of 50,000 words as being two of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis (23,000), half of the first Hunger Games (99,750), or around 10% of the Lord of the Rings trilogy (576,459)!

There’s a lot that can be done in 50,000 words. You don’t need to hit a specific word count to make a great piece of writing – the content’s what’s really important!

How To Write 50,000 Words: Tips And Tricks

Writing 50,000 words can seem like a daunting task, but don’t panic – we’ve gathered some handy tips and tricks to make the writing process simple and painless! Here’s what you need to know when you’re writing 50,000 words.

1) Planning Is Essential

Having a good plan is crucial. Knowing how to structure your writing, where you want to go with it, and how you’re going to achieve that is the first step to actually getting the writing done.

Whether you’re writing an assignment or a novel, having a plan in mind is essential.

You should also plan the timeframe that you’re going to be writing in.

Writing 50,000 words in a day is a big ask, so schedule a certain amount of time per day that you’re going to write.

Adjust this to fit in any deadlines you’re facing, and try and aim for a target word count each day.

2) Edit At The End

Mistakes happen, and you’re going to make a few typos and silly errors along the way.

However, you shouldn’t be constantly going back over what you’ve written as you go – this is an easy way to waste your time and hit a roadblock in your writing.

Save your editing to the end, where you can look at the piece as a whole to see what needs changing.

3) Don’t Give Up!

It might sound a bit cheesy, but it’s the truth! Writing 50,000 words is a lot of hard work, and there can be times where it seems impossible.

But stick with it and keep working towards your goal. It’s worth it when you get there, trust us!

Final Thoughts

50,000 words can feel like a lot of writing, but in reality it seems a bit insignificant compared to some of the longer novels out there.

With that being said, though, 50,000 words (or 200 pages) is still a lot of effort and takes time and skill to achieve.

If you’re planning on writing 50,000 words – whether for a novel, essay, or other form of writing – now you know a little more about how many pages that will be.

And using the tips in this guide, you’ll be able to hit the word count in no time!

Hi, my name is Alan Reiner and I have been in the writing industry for almost seven years. I write articles that can span from 200 words all the way to 20,000 words every single day. How do I do it? With a lot of determination. All my way through school and college, I hated long-form assignments. I could never get into the groove of working on one piece for an extended period of time. My pieces were always late because I didn’t have the motivation to type them, let alone edit them.

How Long Does It Take to Write a 1000 Word Essay?

How long does it take to write an essay?

How long does it take to research an essay?

If you’re writing an opinion piece on something you already have some knowledge about, you may not have to do any research at all. It may just be a matter of organizing your existing thoughts into a coherent essay. If you need to find out about a topic before you begin to write, you can easily get information on certain topics, whilst others will be more obscure and therefore more difficult to research. Clearly, the easier it is to find information, the faster you can write.

How good are your reading comprehension skills?

Some of us can just skim a piece and pick up all the salient points. Others will have to read with more attention, and even re-read a piece several times to extract the information we need. Having good reading and comprehension skills makes writing much faster since you’re able to “get” the facts faster and organize them better. Now you know why you had to do so many reading comprehension tests at school.

How well did you plan?

Throwing yourself headlong at a 1,000-word essay and writing till you reach the word count may seem like the easy option, but it isn’t. Planning your essay so that it begins with an introduction, highlights the most important points you want to make and then wraps everything up into a conclusion actually saves you time. Sometimes, essay instructions will tell you how to structure the piece, so read them carefully and extract any information you can use to guide your essay’s structure.

How fast do you type?

Have you ever gotten lost halfway through a sentence? You know what you wanted to say, but halfway through, the thought slips away from you. The faster you can type , the more easily you can capture thoughts before your mind moves onto the next thing and you forget what you were trying to say. Typing skills are essential in the modern world. Consider using typing games to improve your speed.

How long does it take me to write a 1,000-word essay?

Faster isn’t always better. The more in-depth your report is meant to be, the longer you should spend on it. I can usually research and write a fairly technical magazine article of 1,000 words in three hours, but do remember that I’m a professional writer. I’m fast because I write all day, every day.

The longest I’ve ever spent on a 1,000-word article was 12 hours. It was absolutely brutal! The information I needed to gather was very technical, hard to find, and even more difficult to understand, and you can’t write something until you really understand the subject matter. I also had to contact experts for their opinions, but I couldn’t even ask about their opinions until I could target them with the right questions. As a result, I actually had to write most of the article before slotting in the expert comment.

The quickest I’ve ever written a 1,000-word article is one hour. In this case, I already knew the subject matter well and didn’t have to back up every fact in the essay with references.

Reviewing your work also matters

If you’re writing for grades and want a good one, you need a really good essay. Don’t start writing it the day before you have to hand it in. Try and get your first draft down at least a day or two before you have to submit your work. Then return to it and do your editing. Read your essay aloud to yourself, since this will help you pick up any careless errors you wouldn’t otherwise spot. Check to see if your information flows logically from one point to the next and make sure that you’ve presented your information clearly.

Remember, teachers get tired. They have to read the same kind of essay over and over again when they grade. If they struggle to understand what you’re saying, you might not get as good a grade as you would if you stuck to using short sentences and relatively simple language.

Your reviewing process shouldn’t take all that long. If you don’t have to make a lot of changes, you should be able to do your final edit in under half an hour.

Take your time. Whatever you do, don’t rush. You might want your essay to be written quickly, but if it’s an important essay, taking your time will give you a better finished product. Budget your time conservatively. It’s better to find that you’ve still got time left over than to run out of time and end up dashing things off with a looming deadline.

This isn’t accurate. I wrote my 1000 word essay in an hour, not three hours. You should change the times you have listed to reflect how long it actually takes to write. Obviously you don’t know since the mes you listed are not the same as what I can do!

Did you even read the article? The writer says that it’s based on what she writes and is just a general approximation. How long it takes you or anybody else to write an essay will obviously be different because you’re not the same as everybody else. Nobody writes at the same speed so how long it takes you to write an essay will be different for every person.

Someone doesn’t understand the meaning of “rough estimate”

Well then you must be superhuman or some shit I don’t care, I came here for a question not your butthurt comments. Also, if your so good at writing I wouldn’t have found 2 typos in 2 sentences 🙂

*you’re

If you already have all the research done and know what you want to say, then a 1000 word essay shouldn’t take more than an hour to write. In fact, it probably can be done in 30 minutes or less. The time-consuming part of an essay is the research and how long that takes depends on how much you have to do. But the actual writing of the essay shouldn’t take too long at all.

But research is part of the writing process. If a person writes a book, they don’t only count the time it took them at the typewriter writing. They count all the time it took to research the book as well. Trying to separate the two doesn’t make sense.

I think an important thing to point out here is that there’s a huge difference between writing a 1000 word essay and writing a good 1000 word essay. You can write an essay in hardly any time at all if you don’t do the proper research and don’t spend time editing what you wrote. If you’re going to write a good essay, it’s going to take more time. You should always give yourself more time than you think you’re going to need to get it done.

This applies to all writing. Writing and writing something something well will have a huge time discrepancy even if both writings are the same length. Just because you are able to finish something quickly doesn’t mean that’s the best way to do it.

Exactly! Actually, it can take hours or days to come up with the right line – or it can come in seconds. There’s no real counting in terms of the creative process.

Days to come up with the right line? 😀

It does. Sometimes, no matter how hard you look at something, you won’t be satisfied with it. It may take you days to figure it out. And then, one fine day, you suddenly stand up right in the middle of breakfast and then run upstairs and then type out the right line. Source: personal experience

I just spent 8 hours on a 500-word monologue… This comment made me feel better.

Wow, your advice is excellent it motivated me to do a lot better in my essay.

In my opinion, hours that are presented here a partially true. It may take about an hor to write 300 word essay but editing also takes some time. So on averege, I count the time to write the piece itself + time edit everything.

Research, first draft writing, editing, and rewriting are all part of the writing process. I think the time it takes to do all of them should be counted in the time it takes.

It takes way too long! Teachers should not be allowed to assign essays more than 250 words. They always complain they don’t have enough time and work too hard. It’s only because they make their students do too much work!!

This comment just makes you look lazy. 250 words is nothing. Any topic that needs to be explored will take many more words than this. If you don’t want to write, just admit it and don’t try to project that on others.

If you do your research, use annotations for resources and understand to whom and what you have to transfer than the fewer words the better. Remember that you are demonstrating deep knowledge of the topic by making it accessible to the audience without them doing the research. Simplify, simplify, simplify.

Contrary to what academia self-righteously preach, its imperative for any writing and explanation of thought to be simplified. If you cant explain it in short time/short essay you don’t understand it enough.

I disagree, I feel 250 words is way too less to explain any topic. In my opinion, the maximum word count for an essay should be 1500.

It should take long enough that you get all the points you want across in the writing, but not too long as to bore the reader. Writing should be engaging, not boring.

Nice philosophy, but completely unhelpful if you have a paper due tomorrow and limited amount of time to write. The real world doesn’t work that way.

If someone has an essay due tomorrow and they waste time reading this, then they are a bit of an idiot for giving themselves even less time to work with. If they’re leaving work to the last minute like that, then the only thing they should be doing is jumping right in and writing (or planning the essay, but that should be done much sooner).

This is so arbitrary and will depend on the individual. It’s like asking the question, “how long does it take to write a book?” For some, it will only take a couple of months while for others it will take a lifetime. it also depends on the type of writing you’re doing. Some writing is easy and quick and other writing is difficult and requires huge amounts of research.

The uphill task of writing an essay is doing thorough research. Once you have completed the research, you can deliver a 1000 word paper per hour

I completely agree with you on that one. I recently worked on a 4000 word essay, and while the research did take me three hours to conduct, I completed the essay itself in a bit less than four hours and scored a total of 32/34 points.

So happy to read that! That’s because I just realised, that that is what I needed to read. I’ve got two months to write six 2500 word essays. I’ve been procrastinating because I’m simply in fear of doing a bad job. I’ve done lots of research; made lots of notes; collected citations and written nothing. It’s time. I can do this!

I’m writing a 1600 word essay right now as I type this lol

Then show me after you have finished.

Im writing a 2500 word essay, almost done, I can’t even imagine writing a 10000 word essay in university, that sounds EXTREMELY painful 🙁

I found these estimations quite accurate, thank you.

I’m writing a narrative for my English class right this moment and the word requirements are 800-1000. I’ve only been working for two hours and I’m at 1,157. I’m nowhere near done…

your word requirements are 800-1000 and u have 1157? You’ve been done for a while I would say

Wow i have to write a 1 500 word essay in 4 days and I have about 1050 words left Dono how long thats gonna take me 😂😭😭😭

I am writing a dissertation and those estimations made me positive because just 41 hour to write 12,000 essay seems nothing. But at the moment I just finished literature review(though the hardest part yet) without editing I am already at over 35 hours of work. And that’s not even a half! But I am aiming for a good grade though…

I’ve found these estimates incredibly accurate in my years in college. I’m about to graduate next week and have one more 3500 word paper to write. We’ll see if the estimates hold true. However, the estimates (for me at least) don’t include the time it takes to edit so I usually add a little time depending on how long the essay/paper has to be.

Wow, these tips are helpful, Thank You to the creator of this website. These tips helped me a lot in my essay for school.

National Novel Writing Month

How to write 50,000 words in a month

T he letters shine brightly, white on black, from an open laptop placed prominently in the window of an Irish sports bar facing Madison Square Garden: NaNoWriMo. Inside, a crowd of perhaps 40 people, young women and men in casual dress, are drinking beer and conversing loudly. The discussion, predictably, is dominated by issues of plot, character and writer's block, for this is the first New York City social of 2013's National Novel Writing Month.

NaNoWriMo – even the acronym suggests writing in a hurry, and no wonder: the objective of those taking part is to complete a novel of at least 50,000 words in the course of November. What is written seems of less concern than how much; after all, as one of the project's gurus puts it: "The path to quality is quantity." Participants are encouraged to download specially designed word-count widgets to create graphic displays of their progress. Completed manuscripts can be submitted to the organisation, which, to forestall any anxiety (or perhaps hope) that they might be read, jumbles the words automatically before counting them. A certificate is sent to those who hit the quota in the allotted time.

Founded in 1999 by Chris Baty , a native of Kansas and the author of No Plot? No Problem , NaNoWriMo has expanded rapidly over the last decade and a half. Last year 275,000 writers signed up, a total already surpassed on 2013's participant counter, prominently displayed on  the organisation's homepage . "Noveling", a verb coined by a group that evidently regards a work of fiction less as a cultural artifact and more as simply work, has never enjoyed greater popularity.

Anything resembling artistic pretension is confidently eschewed by NaNoWriMo. The organisation's logo comprises a heraldic shield featuring quatrains with bold drawings of crossed pens, a laptop, a sheaf of paper, and a steaming cup of coffee, all topped, incongruously, by a Viking helmet. The prevalent aesthetic – particularly when displayed on the range of sweatshirts and hoodies it offers for sale – is more sports club than literary salon.

I introduce myself to Andy, a spry, balding man in a bright green polo shirt. Alongside his day job in educational publishing, he explains, he's a NaNoWriMo old-timer, having first participated in the 2005 programme. He is now an organiser, or what the project calls a "Municipal Liaison", a title that strikes me, like so much of NaNoWriMo's argot, as deliberately prosaic.

"If you want to hit the word target," he explains to me, "you have to lock away your inner editor." I say I can see that, and marvel openly at the speed at which participants must write: "What is it?" I hesitate, trying to do the maths, "2,000 words a day?" "1,667," Andy corrects me. "But some people can produce much more. Quite a few write two novels in the month; one guy even turned in 500,000 words." I whistle incredulously at the vastness of this accomplishment; Andy honours it with a nod and a deep draft of Anchor Steam. "I can't compete with that," he shrugs, placing his beer back on the table and holding up both hands with fingers bent to form crooked claws: "T-rex typist."

Andy brings over Claire, who tells me she works from home as a freelance content manager for an educational website. I ask what her novel is about. "It's sort of a sci-fi story, set in a post-economic collapse." She looks past me as she speaks. "But there's mystery and fantasy elements, as well," she adds quickly, in a way that suggests she believes the range of genres may add value to the project. This isn't her first shot at NaNoWriMo. Last year she wrote a "zombie apocalypse" novel and she's written others, too, not just in November. I ask if she has ever attempted to get them published. "No, not yet," she smiles tersely. "I'm following the advice of Kristine Kathryn Rusch " – an Oregon-based writer who has published dozens of books under various pseudonyms. "She says you need to write a million words of crap before you can produce anything original. I'm still making my way through the crap."

Publication doesn't seem to be a concern for most of the NaNoWriMo crowd. There are celebrated cases of graduates from the scheme going on to produce bestsellers – Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants and Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus ; and, following complaints from publishers and agents inundated with a flood of just completed manuscripts at the beginning of December, the national organisers have felt obliged to circulate a plea to "let your novel rest" before sending it out. But for the most part, it is the simple achievement of getting the thing done, rather than any subsequent publishing success, or even readership, that drives the writers on.

John, an IT manager for IBM, is in his fourth year of NaNoWriMo. He clearly welcomes the challenge of hitting his word count, and particularly relished the struggle this involved last year: "We had Hurricane Sandy to deal with then. I was, literally, writing in the dark." This time round he is working with a plot featuring "a demon whose job it is to get borderline souls to be more evil". "Is it a comedy?" I inquire delicately. "It has comedic elements," he says. "I mean, if you do a bad job in hell you can get fired. But it's more dark than funny." A previous effort was set in "a future dystopia where all new writing is banned and classic literature is compulsory reading." I say that does sound terrifying. "Yes" he avers, "like Nineteen Eighty-Four ."

A young man with an intense stare spots me scribbling in my notebook and comes over. "Hey, what are you writing?" I say I'm hoping to publish an article about NaNoWriMo. "Cool," he says. I expect him to ask who I am writing the piece for, but he doesn't, and it occurs to me that no one else has either. Just the fact that I'm writing seems sufficient. Stewart is 22 and employed by a computer software company. He is working on a story about a "young guy who goes insane with existential angst". He announces proudly that, the day before yesterday, he wrote more than 5,000 words. "Mind you," he adds, "I have him going to another planet where they use a language not spoken on Earth."

I leave the bar with the conversation among the crowd still in full flow. For them, there's a heavy weekend of noveling ahead. For me, there is reflection on the meaning of so many words being written and never read. My admiration for the Stakhanovite determination of these writers can't displace an uneasy feeling that they are perhaps a symptom of an increasingly deskilled and atomised society, one in which any avenue of self-expression, however solipsistic, is grasped, or bashed out, with both hands.

But these are general concerns, not susceptible to quick answers. More to the point, this short article has taken me several hours to write. Please don't mention that to NaNoWriMo.

50 thousand word essay

Doing 50,000 Words in 30 Days

A nanowrimo participant chronicles the pluses and minuses in 750 words.

As you read this 750-word essay, I’ll be taking a nap. Or relaxing on my sofa, eating bonbons and reading Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin Stories. I’ll feel that I deserve these luxuries because, between November 1 and November 30, I will have written an entire novel. From scratch.

Every year, I participate in National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo, an online challenge for which one commits to writing a 50,000-word novel during November. If you complete the word count, which comes to about 200 pages, you “win” the challenge. [88 words]

How can such a novel, you ask, be any good? Mine is not good. Perhaps other writers are capable of writing a good novel in 30 days, but I’m not one of them. Back in November 2007, I wrote my very first NaNoWriMo novel in a spurt of coffee-fueled industry. That book, The Secret of the Nightingale Palace, will be published by William Morrow in February. Though it may sound impressive to say that I wrote it in 30 days, it’s more accurate to say that I wrote a very rough draft in 30 days. I finished the novel five years and 15 drafts later. [193 words]

NaNoWriMo, then, did not shave time off of the process of writing my novel. So why bother with this hectic November ritual at all? I’ll explain.

Many writers, myself included, suffer from a gnawing perfectionism that can, at its worst, torment us over the placement of a single comma. Forget completing a first draft; perfectionists have trouble completing even a paragraph. NaNoWriMo forces us to ignore our incapacitating inner critic and keep going. The genius of NaNoWriMo is that it obliges us to (temporarily) lower our standards. [280 words]

The program has other advantages as well. Every time I write a NaNoWriMo novel—and, as of December 1, I will have written six—I begin with a vague idea of a story and the people moving through it. As days pass, I complicate and deepen the plot, and, little by little, the characters become more real to me. By December 1, I have a draft that I can work with in the future. The prose sounds ugly, but I know I can improve it.

Back in 2007, for example, I began The Secret of the Nightingale Palace with a simple premise: a grandmother, Goldie, and her adult granddaughter, Anna, make a journey from New York to California to return a valuable collection of Japanese art to its former owner. Happily for me, Goldie emerged from my mind fully formed: 85 years old, stylish, evasive about her past, and unabashedly open with her opinions on everything from other people’s fashion choices to her granddaughter’s taste in men. Anna, by contrast, coalesced in my mind much more slowly. During that first NaNoWriMo draft, I imagined her as a flustered, disaffected wife and mother. In the finished book, Anna is, instead, a 35-year-old childless widow who still wears a wedding ring because she can’t figure out when to finally take it off.

In my NaNoWriMo draft of the novel, many of the most important elements of the story came into focus. Those included the Japanese art collection, an Indian-American doctor who loves haiku, and a venerable San Francisco department store, where something bloody happens behind the tie counter. NaNoWriMo’s concentrated time frame, I discovered, creates a fertile realm for my imagination.

I should point out that NaNoWriMo has its drawbacks, too. The 50,000-word goal, for example, can make even the most succinct writers verbose. Why be satisfied with a prissy dog when you can have a tiny white prissy dog with a pink ribbon around her neck and add an additional nine words to your novel? In December, the first thing I do is cut. [623 words]

Also, the commitment to write an entire novel in a month means that you write when you’re exhausted, when you’re bored, and when you would not be able to find an ounce of inspiration even if your glorious career depended on it. At my lowest moments, I consider the whole thing a tedious slog, but I also value it as much as anything I do as a writer.

Which is why, next November 1, I’ll likely start a NaNoWriMo novel once again. Please don’t remind me of that now, though. Let me sit on the sofa with my bonbons and Berlin Stories, relishing the chance to immerse myself in the results of another writer’s strenuous and, I imagine, often tiresome effort. [743 words, to be exact.]

Author and journalist Dana Sachs’s The Secret of the Nightingale Palace will be published by Morrow in February.

How to Write a 1000 Word Essay

50 thousand word essay

1000-word essays aren’t hard. A student can write one in a day.

All it takes is a solid topic and some planning. Cook up three sources, organize them in a 5-paragraph format, and you’re good to go! But writing a 1000-word essay that’s interesting and meaningful may take more than that. Formatting requirements (MLA) and punctuation-loving professors can make toughen things up.

In our blog, we will explore how to write a 1000-word essay. After covering a few engaging and relevant topics, we’ll jump right into the essay structure. Make sure to stick around for helpful tips at the end. As always, EssayPro — essay service — is here if you need any extra help. Happy writing!

What if I Can't Come up With 1000 words?

The best tip that will shed light in the dark is writing in a non-stop regime. Just start writing without thinking about any word limit. Of course, it seems much more time-consuming and complicated. Nevertheless, this technique will let you understand and determine any gaps in your writing and then fix them in the shorter version of your draft.

Don’t panic if it ends up more than 2000+ words or more. Once you are done with the writing, read it several times, and highlight parts that you believe are worth attention. Then exclude all parts of the text that you think are unnecessary. Next step will be combining, polishing up and connecting them together. Include transitions between paragraphs to make sure that everything flows smoothly.

Useful Tips for Editing and Productivity

How to Write a 1000 Word Essay

The most important parts of writing an essay are organizing and editing. Writing is barely half of the work. We want to share some pro tips to save time writing and make your essay genuinely outstanding.

  • Write an Outline first: Most of the time, a 1000-word essay is an in-class assignment. Scribble an outline on a separate sheet of paper to keep you focused when writing. Essay outlines aren’t made for your professor, and they’re made for you. Without an outline, you cannot see the logical structure of your essay and the progression of your arguments.
  • Write an Introduction last: Starting an essay can be frustratingly hard, and most writers know this. A general rule of thumb is to write the introduction last. An essay introduction sets the tone and introduces the writer’s main arguments. After writing the whole chunk of your paper, you’ll know all your main points and the tone of your writing. Therefore it is best to leave it for last.
  • Proofread Twice before submitting: If your 1000-word essay is an in-class assignment, proofread it. Grammar and logic errors won’t be tolerated by your tutor, besides it will only take a minute. Rewriting the whole paper in class is impossible. Therefore proofreading is the only quality-check you get. If your essay is not an in-class assignment, you have many more opportunities to make it good by proofreading.
  • Use Apps for Proofreading: If your 1000-word essay is a homework assignment, proofread it with apps like Hemingway or Grammarly. They will find errors which you may have easily missed. Additionally, if you wish to upgrade your word choice, use sites like Dictionary.com and Thesaurus for synonyms and words with similar meaning.
  • Ask a Friend or EssayPro for Help: Never be shy to ask a friend or us to read your essay and tell you if it makes sense. • Choose a manageable topic

Don't try to write about a topic that is too broad or complex. Instead, choose something that you are familiar with and that you can easily research.

  • Start with the body of the essay

Once you have chosen a topic, start writing the body of the essay first. This will help you to develop a strong argument and provide a good outline for the essay.

  • Choose a concise title

Choosing a title can be difficult, but it's important that you choose one before writing your essay. Try choosing an attention-grabbing title from which you can logically develop an interesting, informative, and engaging essay.

  • Use the active voice and avoid clichés and trite expressions

Shakespeare's "To be or not to be" may not be a cliché, but it takes up valuable words in your 1000 word essay - so try to avoid them!

Although it's tempting to use a thesaurus to find fancy words, it's best to use them sparingly. The goal of a 1000 word essay is to be clear and concise, not to use flowery language for the sake of it.

  • Read your essay out loud

Reading your essay out loud can help you to catch errors and awkward phrasing. It can also help you to make sure that your argument makes sense from beginning to end.

  • Take a break

Sometimes, you might be unsure about how to approach your essay or where to start. In these situations, it can help to take a break from the writing for a few minutes and come back to it later with fresh eyes.

What is a 1000 Word Essay?

A 1000-word essay is a common format of academic writing that typically spans about 3-4 pages, depending on the formatting. This essay format provides a succinct, yet, thorough exploration of a particular topic. By writing 1000 words, you can delve into an issue, argue a point, or explain a concept in detail.

The main purpose of a 1000-word essay is to showcase student’s critical thinking skills. Teachers or professors often assign such tasks to promote in-depth analysis, research and evaluation.

Unlike shorter forms of academic writing such as a 500-word essay, 1000-word essays allow for a more comprehensive topic investigation. This format demands a well-developed thesis statement and robust arguments supported by evidence. Each idea must be explored sufficiently, with room for introducing counterarguments and rebuttals, if necessary.

Compared to longer formats, like research papers or dissertations, a 1000-word essay requires a more concise and focused approach.

The basic 1000 essay structure includes an introduction, body paragraphs (typically 4-6 in this case), and conclusion. Each section implements a distinct goal:

  • Introduction: Introduces your topic and presents an argument or thesis statement.
  • Body paragraphs: Break down the main idea into multiple points and provide evidence to support them.
  • Conclusion: Rounds off the critical points and offers key takeaways.

When writing a one thousand word essay, you should stick to the 70-30 rule. This means that the introduction and conclusion should take up around 30% of the total word count, while a body section should comprise 70%.

Now that you are familiar with the major parts of a 1000 word essay outline, let’s discuss how many words and what information each section contains.

Introduction (~100-150 Words)

  • Hook the audience with facts, stats or an interesting story
  • Reveal the topic’s background
  • Present your thesis statement.

Body Part (~700-750 Words)

Each body paragraph should focus on a single point and provide evidence to support it. Aim for 3-5 sentences per paragraph, totaling 3-4 body paragraphs or 700-750 words. Here’re the things you should accomplish within your body paragraphs:

  • Open each body paragraph with a topic sentence
  • Supply each argument with important evidence and examples
  • Tie the paragraphs together with logical connections.

As you write a 1000 word essay, go from the weakest argument to the strongest one.

Conclusion (~100-150 Words)

Your conclusion should restate your thesis and wrap up the argument you’ve been making throughout your 1000 word essay. Aim for 100-150 words, which is about 10-15% of the total word count.

Conclusion should accomplish the following goals:

  • Restate your thesis statement
  • Remind the audience about your main points

  • Create a distraction-free environment. Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can concentrate on your writing without interruptions.
  • Build an outline. This will help you organize your ideas and order them logically.
  • Keep balance. Stick to your main topic and avoid going off on tangents. Make sure every paragraph remains on point.

  • Insufficient proof. Making unsupported claims or assertions without providing evidence or examples weakens your arguments.
  • Writing irrelevant content. Including fluff, such as repetitive statements, excessive examples, or unrelated information is unacceptable.
  • Lack of own ideas and thoughts. An essay, independently of its type, is a place where the author should present their own opinions concerning the subject.

The purpose of this outline is to break down the ideas in a logical and structured manner. Then, to make the content clearer and more coherent throughout the paper. After the outline, write your paper on your own to avoid the risk of plagiarism.

Write a Strong Introduction

And give an idea of what the reader may encounter in the rest of the essay.  The first step to start writing an introduction is to introduce your main topic and give a brief idea of what the reader may find later on.

Don’t forget to end this paragraph with a perfect thesis statement on which the whole essay is based.

The body section of an essay is mostly divided into 3 paragraphs. It is the point where you need to explain all types of arguments you made in an essay. Then, support these arguments with relevant examples, facts, or personal interpretations.

Here are the key points that are important to cover for a perfect body section of a 500-word essay:

  • Start your body paragraph with an engaging topic sentence that discusses what you are going to talk about.
  • Examine the main point of view and provide solid facts to support the argument.
  • Introduce a new idea with detailed information, examples, and evidence from reliable sources.
  • Make sure every idea described in the body paragraphs is concise and relevant.
  • Make sure you use transitions in your essay paragraphs so the readers understand the relationship between your ideas.

Write an Impressive Conclusion

It is important to learn how to write a conclusion  that reminds the readers of the thesis. Make sure it does not completely iterate the introduction. Focus on providing critical insight into the main subject of discussion.

Always proofread your essay for mistakes and inconsistencies. Also, make sure the writing convention checklist is followed, as it will give you a clearer idea of what needs to be improved before submitting!

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sentences is a 500-word essay.

FAQ Icon

You can fit about 500 words on one page with standard margins, single spacing, and size 12 font. This is because there are usually 5 letters in each word, 15 words in a sentence, and an average of 7 sentences in a paragraph.

Can a 500-word essay have 4 paragraphs?

The length of your essay will depend on the type and topic. A 500-word paper can be 3-4 paragraphs long, while a 600 or 700-word document requires 4 to 5 paragraphs in order for it all to make sense.

How many references are needed for a 500-word essay?

Going by the 500-word essay length, you would not need to add more than 2-4 references since you’re limited by the word count. Each citation needs its introductory statement, followed by the source’s data and its explanation, so that leaves little room to add in too many sources.

Does a 500-word essay have to be exactly 500 words?

Yes, that’s because the general rule for any academic essay is to not exceed the given word count by more than 10%. So applying the same rule, your 500 word essay length should ideally not exceed 10%, that is 550 words, so you should try to wrap up your thoughts within that word count or otherwise risk a negative marking by the professor.

🔢 What Are the Main 1000-Word Essay Types?

Another point to consider is what type of essay you will choose. You can’t figure out how to write a 1000-word essay if you haven’t decided what kind of essay you need. Let’s take a look at the standard classifications to help you find the best type of essay for you.

The Main 1000-Word Essay Types Are: Expository, Narrative, Argumentative, & Descriptive

  • Expository essay . For academic essays, this is the most popular type . It clearly explains the topic without any poetic details. It would help if you based your 1000-word essay on an analysis of a problem, including all the necessary investigations, ideas, and experiments.
  • Descriptive essay . In this essay , you describe a situation , person, place, experience, etc. In any case, the task is to draw a colorful picture in your reader’s head. If you are looking to apply all your creativity and talent, this is the kind of essay you need.
  • Narrative essay . To tell a story in a thousand-word essay, use this type of essay. Narrative essays are usually personal writings that tell a lot about their authors and contain emotions.
  • Argumentative essay . This essay is similar to an expository essay. So what’s the difference? An argumentative essay requires you to do more research. An argumentative essay has to cover the whole topic , so you need to prepare carefully to write this kind of essay. Whether it’s a 500-word essay or a 1000-word essay, argumentative writing takes much more time than working on other essay types.

📜 How to Structure a 1000-Word Essay?

An essay is a strictly standardized piece of writing. Thus, each part should fulfill its meaningful role, occupying the designated space. Too wordy introduction and conclusion rob your main body’s depth, while too short paragraphs look simplistic and unsatisfactory in thought. This structure should be followed for the majority of 1000-word essay topics.

1000-Word Essay Introduction

Recommended length: 125 words The introduction must grab the reader’s attention with a hook, provide background information, and formulate the thesis or the principal question. It usually contains 5-6 sentences, 1 for the hook, 3 for the subject-matter background, and 1-2 for the thesis. Most professors evaluate the student’s ability to synthesize the entire essay into a single sentence. Therefore, a concise and comprehensive thesis is a must. It might be helpful to explore some good and bad thesis statement examples before you start

1000-Word Essay: Main Body

Recommended length: 750 words In an argumentative essay, single out three critical thoughts: 2 supporting your statement, and 1 contradicting it. In a persuasive essay, prepare three supporting facts or examples. For a narrative essay, think which events make up the beginning, the end of the story, and the middle part. These will be your three main body paragraphs.

  • 1st Paragraph Recommended length: 250 words Describe here your most persuasive argument. Start with its formulation. Then develop your thought with the available evidence and facts. Restate the idea once again, specifying how exactly it confirms your opinion.
  • 2nd Paragraph Recommended length: 250 words Repeat the plan of paragraph one for your second statement.
  • 3rd Paragraph Recommended length: 250 words Provide a counterargument. Try to get into your opponent’s shoes and view the issue from their perspective. Explain why their opinion is incorrect. Conclude with the third statement supporting your thesis and disclaiming the given counterargument.

1000-Word Essay Conclusion

Recommended length: 125 words Restate the main ideas of your essay and tie them together. Avoid providing new ideas or any extraneous information here. The conclusion provides a finished look to your piece of writing, so make it sound persuasive and complete.

📝 How to Edit a 1000-Word Essay?

Sometimes essay editing is even more challenging than writing. To make this process easier for you, follow these tips:

  • Don’t use meaningless words. Honestly, a 1000-word essay paper can’t include every single idea on the topic you chose. That’s why you should focus on using only essential words that provide valuable information. Words like “actually,” “really,” and “very” don’t add much value to your writing.
  • Read your papers aloud. Though it sounds silly, believe us, it works. When you’re writing an essay, it’s easy to miss some mistakes, even obvious ones. They become much more comfortable to spot—and hear—when you read your paper aloud. Just try it yourself!
  • Diversify your vocabulary . Why use “good” when you can say “fantastic,” “incredible,” or “high-quality”? Why write “said” when there are powerful synonyms like “argued,” “assured,” or “whispered”? Develop your writing style by using synonyms !
  • Be consistent. It’s important to use only one style while writing a 1000-word essay or any other academic paper. Also, if English is your second language, make sure you stick to just one of the variants. Don’t switch between phrases and idioms from both British and American English.
  • Separate long sentences into short ones. Long sentences are difficult for your readers to read and comprehend. By the time you finish a really long sentence, you may have already forgotten what was at the beginning of it! Try to use short, clear sentence structures to help your audience understand your ideas and convince them of your arguments. Another option is to use a sentence changer to rewrite some of the content.

Overall, a 2000-word essay doesn’t differ from other essay types. It should also have an introductory part, a particular number of body paragraphs, and a concluding section with major insights you’ve derived from research. Since this essay type can be 7-8 pages long, it makes sense to divide the content into sections and cover each of them in several paragraphs.

The picture displays the elements of 2000-word essay structure.

2000-Word Essay Structure

The structure of your 2000-word essay will largely depend on the professor’s prompt. If the tutor requires a more structured paper, you can divide the content into several sections and dwell on every aspect in a couple of paragraphs each. It is not typical for 2000-word essays to have a separate literature review – you may have one in a report or research paper, but essays usually favor a more integrated presentation of literature in the body of the paper. Thus, overall, the essay should have an introduction with a thesis statement, body paragraphs, and a conclusion with main findings and inferences. As the intro and conclusion take 10% of the word count each, you should expect the body of the paper to have around 1500-1600 words, which translates into 10-15 body paragraphs.

Consider using the outline generator if a 2000-word essay structure is challenging for you.

2000-Word Essay Introduction

The essay’s introduction usually takes 10% of the paper’s length, but short essays may have even 20% taken by the introductory section. When we’re talking about a 2000-word essay, 7-10% will be totally fine to cover the broad context, background, and thesis statement of the paper after introducing the essay’s main subject. This way, you should allocate 150-200 words to the introduction of this essay.

Try the thesis statement tool if you’re stuck making a thesis statement. And check our research introduction maker and hook sentence generator if you want to prepare your introduction in no time.

2000-Word Essay Conclusion

Similar to the introduction, a 2000-word essay’s conclusion may also take 150-200 words, which equals 7-10% of the essay’s length. It should summarize the key points you have discussed and derive the main takeaways from every argument or body section you’ve had in the essay.

Check our closing sentence generator to formulate a closing paragraph for your essay.

How Many References Should I Use in a 2000 Word Paper?

It depends on the specific task your supervisor has set and the academic level at which you’re studying. A rule of thumb is to have 8-12 references for every 1,000 words of text. Thus, your 2000-word essay should have around 20 unique sources to comply with the professor’s requirements and academic standards.
