Speech on Unity in Diversity

Speech generator.

Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and fellow attendees,

Today, I stand before you to speak on a topic that resonates deeply with each of us – “Unity in Diversity.” In our world’s grand tapestry, every thread, every color, every texture is vital. Together, they form a picture more beautiful and resilient than any single thread could on its own.

The Essence of Diversity

Diversity is not just a concept; it’s the very fabric of our society. It’s the multitude of cultures, beliefs, and traditions that we bring to the communal table. It’s in the languages we speak, the foods we savor, and the stories we tell our children. Diversity is our collective strength, a source of innovation and creativity, a wellspring of empathy and understanding.

Challenges and Misconceptions

However, embracing diversity is not without its challenges. Misunderstandings and stereotypes can lead to division. It’s easy to fear what we do not understand or to resent what seems different. But it’s crucial to remember that our differences do not divide us; they enrich us.

Unity in Action

Unity in diversity means recognizing that each individual is unique and respecting our individual differences. It’s about understanding that our varied backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives are not just to be tolerated but celebrated.

Examples of Unity in Diversity

Let’s consider some inspiring examples:

  • In the United States, we see a melting pot of cultures contributing to every field, be it science, arts, or governance.
  • In India, a land of numerous languages and ethnicities, people come together to celebrate festivals from diverse cultures, embodying the spirit of ‘unity in diversity.’

The Role of Education and Dialogue

Education plays a pivotal role in fostering this unity. Schools and universities are not just centers for academic learning; they are the nurseries of understanding and tolerance. Through dialogue and interaction, we learn about each other, about our shared dreams and unique challenges.

Call to Action

I urge each one of you to be ambassadors of unity in diversity. Let us reach out to someone from a different background, listen to their story, and share our own. Let’s break down the walls of ignorance and build bridges of understanding.

In conclusion, unity in diversity is not a distant ideal; it’s a daily practice. It starts with us – with our conversations, our attitudes, and our actions. Let’s cherish our diversity and weave it into a stronger, more united society. Together, we are unbreakable; together, we thrive.

Persevere in Unity

Kevin j worthen.

President of Brigham Young University

January 12, 2021

While all human beings share a common bond as beloved spirit children of Heavenly Parents, each of us is a unique individual with individual personalities, experiences, and gifts. And each of these individual characteristics can contribute to greater unity.

Welcome to the start of a new semester, one full of promise but also one in which we face two major challenges: (1) a global pandemic that threatens our physical health and (2) increasing divisiveness and anger that threaten the moral and spiritual fiber of our society. Basically, COVID and chaos. The good news is that there are things within our individual and collective control that we can do to address both of these challenges.

The Seventh-Inning Stretch

Let me start with the first. Even though many of the traditional educational routines continue to be altered because of the coronavirus, there is increasing light on the horizon. With the rapidly expanding availability of a vaccine, we can envision a future in which we will be able to gather more often and in larger numbers and in which in-person meetings and classes will become the norm rather than the exception.

But—and this is important—that day has not come yet, and the speed with which it comes, as well as the adverse impact the virus will have in the interim, will depend in no small part on the degree to which we continue to adhere to safety and health guidelines over these next few months. So while there is increased optimism because the end is in sight, there is a commensurate need to be more diligent than ever in wearing masks, washing our hands, maintaining social distancing, and complying with testing protocols.

As I have considered our situation in this regard, my mind has gone to a tradition that began in earnest with William Howard Taft, the twenty-seventh president of the United States and later chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court—the only person in U.S. history to serve as the head of both the executive and judicial branches.

President Taft was a large man, standing more than six feet in height and weighing well more than 300 pounds. He was also an avid fan of major-league baseball. On April 14, 1910, President Taft attended the opening game of the major-league season between the Washington Senators and the Philadelphia Athletics. According to one report:

As the face-off between the Senators and the Athletics wore on, the rotund, six-foot-two president . . . grew more and more uncomfortable in his small wooden chair. By the middle of the seventh inning he could bear it no longer and stood up to stretch his aching legs—whereupon everyone else in the stadium, thinking the president was about to leave, rose to show their respect. A few minutes later Taft returned to his seat, the crowd followed suit, and the “seventh-inning stretch” was born. 1

While most historians agree that something akin to a late-inning stretch took place sporadically at some baseball games prior to 1910, 2 its enduring popularity as one of baseball’s most deeply embedded rituals can be traced in large part to Taft’s aches and pains at that Senators-Athletics game.

Now what does President Taft’s experience at a baseball game more than a century ago have to do with us? Let me suggest that with respect to the pandemic, we are just finishing the seventh-inning stretch. Just as President Taft needed a break after sitting in an undersized seat for six and a half innings, many of us were ready for a change by the end of last fall semester. If seven innings of being confined to an uncomfortable seat can seem like a long time, nine months of social distancing, Zoom classes, and mask wearing can seem like a lifetime. Yet we persevered. We made it to the end of the fall semester, and we welcomed the chance to change positions—to stretch, so to speak. The pandemic seventh-inning stretch came just in time for many of us.

But the game was not over when President Taft took that rejuvenating break. He was reenergized, but he returned to his wooden chair, and its shape and size were no more accommodating than they were before he stood. There was more baseball to be played, and the outcome was still uncertain. 3 A lot can happen in the last two innings of a baseball game.

Similarly, the pandemic experience is not over for us. The need to adhere to the guidelines is more important than ever. Because of your good work last semester, we are ahead. And if we stay ahead—if we finish strong—we can, like the home baseball team, end the game one-half inning early. If, on the other hand, we lose focus and let down our guard, the virus may overtake us, requiring us to go extra innings—or worse, to cancel the game.

The seventh-inning stretch can, therefore, not only rejuvenate us but also remind us of the need to continue on—the need to persevere. The word persevere has a deeper meaning than we may realize. President Russell M. Nelson recently shared with us that one of the Hebrew meanings of the theologically significant name Israel is “let God prevail.” 4 Another Hebrew meaning of that name—given to Jacob after his bout of wrestling—is “persevere”: “he perseveres (with) God.” 5 This linguistic connection between persevere and Israel reminds us that difficult tasks, like persevering through a pandemic, are easier when we involve God in the process. So I urge you to persevere—to “be not weary in well-doing,” 6 as modern scripture puts it. We have made it to the seventh-inning stretch. We just need to finish strong.

One key to persevering comes from another aspect of the traditional seventh-inning stretch. Years after President Taft’s precedent-setting stretch in 1910, some teams began to add music to the tradition. In 1934, the song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” was played for the first time in a World Series game. 7 Over the ensuing decades, that song has become standard seventh-inning fare at most major-league parks. 8 Because of its association with the seventh-inning stretch, it is now unquestionably the best-known baseball song in America—one that unifies the entire crowd at a baseball game, regardless of their team preference.

To those unfamiliar with baseball, this surely must be odd. As one reporter put it:

The seventh-inning stretch is a bit bizarre—fans suddenly standing up and singing a song about attending the very event they’re at—but it’s . . . a ritual that makes baseball baseball, with its history and share d experiences. 9

And it is that unifying element of the ritual that makes the moment so powerful and reenergizing. It doesn’t matter how well you sing or which team you are cheering for: during the seventh-inning stretch, you are united with others around you—brought together in the moment. As one Colorado Rockies fan explained:

At the ballpark it doesn’t matter if you sing alto or awful. . . .

“. . . [Baseball is] best enjoyed if you embrace . . . the chance to stand up and join in a tradition where, for one minute, we can all get along—even with the Cards fans or Dodgers fans.” 10

There is, as Joseph Smith explained, power in unity. 11 And we are in more need of that unifying power than perhaps at any time in our lifetimes, not only to weather the pandemic storm but also to address pressing issues like social justice, poverty, racism, and angry divisiveness and intolerance in political and other matters.

That We May Be as One

Unity is a concept that extends well beyond baseball, and even beyond any of the more important issues we currently face. It is an eternal gospel principle whose presence or absence determines not only the stability and prosperity of a community but also our own eternal destiny. 12 Simply put, we cannot be exalted without achieving a high level of unity.

The Lord made this clear in section 38 of the Doctrine and Covenants. He commanded the early Saints, “Be one; and if ye are not one ye are not mine.” 13 Given the centrality of unity to our eternal destiny, it is not surprising that on the last evening of His mortal ministry, the Savior prayed to His Heavenly Father on behalf of His beloved disciples, asking “that they may be one, even as we are one . . . , that they may be made perfect in one.” 14

The positive impact of unity on individuals and society is demonstrated by scriptural examples of societies that had achieved an extraordinary level of unity. These include the descendants of Lehi in the American continent after the visitation of the Savior, 15 the members of the early Church in the Middle East shortly after the Savior’s mortal ministry there, 16 and the ancient people of Enoch. 17 In each of these situations, the members of the society had “their hearts knit together in unity and in love one towards another” 18 to such an extent that they could be described as being “of one heart.” 19 Speaking of those who had reached this level of unity, Mormon observed, “Surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God.” 20

Unity is essential to our happiness. Some may find a call for unity strange at a time when we are working to promote more diversity on campus. But, as Elder Quentin L. Cook noted in the most recent general conference, “unity and diversity are not opposites. We can achieve greater unity as we foster an atmosphere of inclusion and respect for diversity.” 21

Some confusion on this issue comes from the ambiguity of the term unity. True unity does not require us to give up our individuality. As the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. observed, “Unity has never meant uniformity.” 22 While all human beings share a common bond as beloved spirit children of Heavenly Parents, 23 each of us is a unique individual with individual personalities, experiences, and gifts. And each of these individual characteristics can contribute to greater unity.

The apostle Paul explained how this works in his first epistle to the Saints at Corinth. After noting the different gifts that different individuals had been blessed with, Paul taught that even though the gifts were different, each contributed to the whole, just as individual parts of the body contribute to the wellness of the whole body. And each individual part is equally important. Paul said:

For the body is not one member, but many.

If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? . . .

If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? . . .

But now are they many members, yet but one body.

And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. 24

President Howard W. Hunter summarized the point and applied it to the modern-day Church when he stated:

We are truly dependent on each other, “and the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.” (1 Cor. 12:21.) Nor can the North Americans say to the Asians, nor the Europeans to the islanders of the sea, “I have no need of thee.” No, in this church we have need of every member, and we pray, as did Paul when he wrote to the church in Corinth, “that there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

“And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.” (1 Cor. 12:25–26.) 25

That same principle applies with full force to the university community. When we welcome and value the gifts, talents, experiences, and perspectives of all of God’s children who are engaged in our common enterprise, we will not only more fully reach our individual potential but will also be more united.

Elder Bruce C. Hafen offered a simple analogy to explain how bringing together those with diverse gifts, personalities, and experiences can produce an enhanced and enriched form of unity:

For me, the ideal metaphor is a musical one: with our many voices, we could all sing in unison, in harmony, or in dissonance. Of these three, I prefer harmony, because it enables a variety of voices to blend into a fuller, richer sound than mere unison. 26

And, as demonstrated by Marcus Roberts and the Modern Jazz Generation at a forum here last February, the analogy applies regardless of the type of music. Even in a jazz ensemble in which individual improvisation often takes center stage, there is still a need for unity, and the results of this combination of individuality and unity are sweet, as demonstrated in the following clip. [A video clip was shown. 27 ]

So if we want to achieve our full potential as individuals and as a campus community, we need to emphasize both unity and diversity—both our commonality and our individuality. Without unity, diversity becomes divisive. Without diversity, unity becomes stagnant. As Pastor Skip Heitzig put it, “If you have unity without variety, you have uniformity and that’s boring. If you have variety without unity, you have anarchy.” 28

A powerful example of what can happen when unity and diversity combine was provided by our football team this past fall. As the team gathered for summer workouts, the sporting world—and most of society—was focused on racial inequalities and inequities that were brought to the fore by a number of events. Co-captain Troy Warner explained, “We just wanted to get together . . . and just kind of talk about how we were feeling, let players express their feelings, their emotions.” 29

As described by one reporter:

Black players, Polynesian players and white players took turns. They had seen NBA players wearing social justice messages on their uniforms. . . .

The BYU players decided they wanted to send a message, too, one they hoped would be visible to the millions expected to watch broadcasts of their games. . . .

“We had an open forum about what we thought should be the message,” junior wide receiver Dax Milne said. “We really tried hard to make it a message that was not controversial . . . , and someone mentioned ‘love one another, ’ ” a teaching of Jesus Christ that resonates deeply with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 30

The team designed a T-shirt with “We Are One” on the front and “Love One Another” on the back, reflecting both the power of unity and the means by which that happens. As co-captain Isaiah Kaufusi stated, “We’ve chosen to love, and that unites us.” 31

The message was seen by millions, and sales of the T-shirts generated more than $200,000 in profits—all of which the players decided to contribute to scholarships for first-generation college students and others with extenuating circumstances at BYU. 32

If we strive for true unity by following the Savior’s example to love others, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, political leanings, or other distinguishing characteristics, we can truly transform both our university community and the larger world with which we interact.

Two Things We Can Do to Persevere and Be More Unified

Let me suggest two things we can do to enhance unity and diversity in ways that will help us both persevere though the pandemic and lay the foundation for a stronger, more diverse, and more unified campus.

1. We Must Avoid Contention

First, we must avoid contention. While diversity is not the opposite of unity, contention is. As the Savior Himself made clear when He was laying the foundation for a Zion society in the ancient Americas:

He that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another.

Behold, this is not my doctrine . . . ; but this is my doctrine, that such things should be done away. 33

This does not mean that we will not disagree with each other, but it does mean we will do so in a way that both focuses on issues and not on ad hominem attacks and reflects the truth that each of us, including those with whom we disagree, is a beloved spirit child of Heavenly Parents. Former academic vice president James R. Rasband explained at our annual university conference in 2017:

For us it is not unity o r diversity but both unity an d diversity. . . . Diverse perspectives and experiences will be a boon to our effort to discern how best to accomplish our Mission and Aims. We won’t always agree, but we can disagree charitably. By charitable disagreement I mean more than basic civility. Instead of mere civility, which is a baseline obligation, I hope we will listen—really listen—to each other and work to understand one another’s views and statements in a charitable light. What an oasis of learning we would be if pursuing light and truth were the goal and if inevitable disagreements were handled with true charity. 34

Oh, how we need that kind of oasis in the world today. And BYU can be that oasis.

As Dr. King put it, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” 35 As the football T-shirts remind us, if we want to be one, we must love one another, even those—especially those—with whom we disagree.

2. Perfect Unity Is Achieved Only Through God and Christ

Second, we need to recognize that perfect unity can be achieved only through God and Christ. Our efforts to become united will be fully successful only if we focus first on our relationship with Them. The Guide to the Scriptures defines unity as “to become one in thought, desire, and purpose first with our Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ, and then with other Saints.” 36

If we align ourselves more with God and Christ, we will become more loving, we will see others more for who they really are, and we will draw closer to both God and our fellow human beings. Elder David A. Bednar once explained this truth in a more visual way with respect to married couples. Using a triangle with Christ at the apex and a wife at the base of one corner and a husband at the base of the other, both separated from each other and from the Savior, Elder Bednar explained that as both of those in the couple focus their attention on the Savior, they are drawn upward to Him, and they naturally move closer toward one another at the same time. As Elder Bednar explained, “Because of and through the Redeemer, . . . [people] come closer together.” 37

When speaking of the Zion societies described in 4 Nephi and the New Testament book of Acts, Sister Reyna I. Aburto explained:

We can suppose that the reason why they were so united is because they knew the Lord personally. They had been close to Him, and they had been witnesses of His divine mission, of the miracles that He performed, and of His Resurrection. . . . They knew that “He is the source of all healing, peace, and eternal progress.” 38

God is the author of diversity and the source of unity. As we come closer to Him and to His Son, Jesus Christ, we will advance both powerful principles in a synergistic way. As we embrace our true primary identity as children of God and act as disciples of Christ, they will magnify our individual gifts while also making us more united.

So my message to you is simple: persevere in unity by coming closer to Heavenly Father and Christ, who never tire and who are perfectly united. 39 If we do so, we will be able to successfully meet whatever challenges we may face individually or collectively in the coming semester and year. May we do so is my prayer, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Katie Casey was baseball mad,

Had the fever and had it bad.

Just to root for the home town crew,

Katie blew.

On a Saturday her young beau

Called to see if she’d like to go

To see a show, but Miss Kate said, “No,

I’ll tell you what you can do:”

Take me out to the ball game,

Take me out with the crowd;

Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,

I don’t care if I never get back.

Let me root, root, root for the home team,

If they don’t win, it’s a shame.

For it’s one, two, three strikes, you’re out,

At the old ball game.

Katie Casey saw all the games,

Knew the players by their first names.

Told the umpire he was wrong,

Good and strong.

When the score was just two to two,

Katie Casey knew what to do,

Just to cheer up the boys she knew,

She made the gang sing this song:

Unity in Diversity:The Integrative Approach to Intercultural Relations

About the author, hans köchler.

September 2012, No. 3 Vol. XLIX 2012, Dialogue among Civilizations

I n the history of institutionalized relations between states, the preservation of peace and stability has always been a predominant concern—an ideal that is also enunciated in the Preamble to the Charter of the United Nations. The gap between the idea of peace and the reality of tension and conflict, however, has proven to be a major challenge to the world organization ever since its foundation after World War II—and that challenge was not only due to conflicting political and economic interests. Situations of conflict often arise in a complex setting of historical, social, cultural and political interaction between communities; accordingly, they must be dealt with in a multifaceted and integrative manner. In order to "practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours", as the peoples of the United Nations proclaim in the Preamble to the Charter, we first have to understand each other, or appreciate each other's way of life and socio-cultural identity. This is only possible if we are knowledgeable about our distinct cultures, traditions and value systems. This truth is also reflected in the Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) according to which "ignorance of each other's ways and lives has been a common cause, throughout the history of mankind", of suspicion and mistrust through which their differences have "all too often broken into war".

As an important element of a durable order of peace among nations and peoples, cultural relations have rightly become a preoccupation of modern foreign policy. However, under the conditions of today's global village, with the simultaneity and constant interaction among distant and distinct traditions, social identities and value systems, cultural foreign policy in the conventional diplomatic sense is not enough anymore. With the geopolitical changes that unfolded after the end of the Cold War, and in particular since the fateful events at the beginning of the new millennium, the promotion of intercultural understanding has become more than just an ingredient, as important as it may be, of "peaceful coexistence" among nations. After the end of the bipolar world order, which had divided the world along ideological lines, dialogue among cultures and civilizations has indeed become an existential issue for the international community, a goal which the United Nations General Assembly has identified as such in its resolution in 2001 as the "United Nations Year of Dialogue Among Civilizations"—a decision notably adopted before the events of 11 September of that year.

The new orientation suggested here requires a systemic approach that takes into account the interdependence between the realms of culture, politics and the economy, and makes intercultural relations a defining element of foreign policy, something which the International Progress Organization has been advocating since 1974 in its first international conference on "The Cultural Self-comprehension of Nations". Our concerns were echoed, at the time, in the words of UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, who, in a special message to the conference, emphasized that there is "no future for mankind unless tolerance and understanding between cultures and nations . become the rule rather than the exception".

In our era of global interconnectedness, the assertion of cultural identity can only be envisioned on the basis of mutual respect and the acceptance of diversity. The conventional, often patronizing and propaganda-like approach in the domain of cultural cooperation, a legacy of the colonial era with its unilateral mindset, has essentially failed in the increasingly multi-polar framework of globalization. A culture can only realize itself and reach a state of maturity if it is able to relate to other cultures and life-worlds in a comprehensive and interactive sense, a process one might also characterize by reference to what we have termed the "dialectics of cultural self-comprehension". The strength of a people or nation indeed depends on the ability to interact with other communities in a complex, multidimensional manner, something that also includes the capacity to see oneself through the eyes of the other. Without such interaction, a community will lack the skills it needs to compete and be successful in today's fast-changing global environment. Dealing with differences in a realistic manner -- neither repulsing "the other" nor denying his being different—is in a nation's well understood self-interest. In that regard, political leaders might take advice from Yale Law School Professor Amy Chua's masterful analysis of the history of empires and how their success depended on an inclusive approach and on tolerance for ethnic, cultural and religious differences.

Along those lines, intercultural dialogue must be than a mere corollary of a state's compartmentalized cultural policy. In order to be credible and sustainable, dialogue must be redefined in a comprehensive and integrative sense. It should cover the entire spectrum of the life of a community, and not only aspects of high culture. If dialogue is to be relevant, it cannot be conducted in an abstract manner—in a kind of l'art pour l'art attitude that isolates issues of cultural and civilizational identity from the realms of politics and the economy.

There are three fundamental maxims that highlight the integrative approach; the first two are also implicit in the Millennium Declaration which the UN General Assembly adopted on 8 September 2000:

  • Dialogue without addressing issues of social justice is artificial and ultimately meaningless.
  • Dialogue without a commitment to peace is a contradiction in itself. In particular, civilizations cannot be allied if the exponents of one civilization wage war against exponents of another civilization. Furthermore, in the twenty-first century, there must be no wars with civilizational undertones. Such conflicts poison the intercultural climate not only globally but at the regional and domestic levels as well, thereby eroding the very foundations of multicultural societies and threatening the long-term stability of states.
  • One cannot preach cultural dialogue internationally and reject the very notion of multiculturalism domestically. Consistency in the implementation of a policy of dialogue is absolutely essential for the integrative approach.

In view of the experiences in the 10 years since the UN initially highlighted the goal of a dialogue among civilizations, a number of practical measures may be considered in the fields of education, politics, diplomacy, sports and tourism that follow from a comprehensive and integrative approach, and that will be required to make dialogue a meaningful and relevant factor of international relations. We can mention here only a few such measures:

In education: under the auspices of UNESCO, the adaptation of domestic curricula and school textbooks to today's multicultural realities should continue in a coordinated manner, and cultural stereotyping should be completely eliminated from national curricula. Educational systems should, as far as possible, reflect the actual diversity in terms of cultures and religions. Wherever possible, studies abroad should be facilitated and integrated into standard curricula by way of academic exchange programmes.

In the field of sports: the transnational dimension of modern mass spectator sports such as football should be properly reflected and made use of in terms of the potential for overcoming a narrow-minded perception of "the other" as adversary. It is strangely inconsistent and totally unacceptable that, while a national team comprises players of different cultures, ethnicities or races, the national fans of that very team indulge in nationalist enemy stereotypes and differences. One cannot be a cosmopolitan in the worldwide engage in chauvinistic acts.

In international tourism: the potential of today's global travel industry, an essential factor of income for many countries especially in the developing world, should be fully used in terms of the opportunity it provides for intercultural encounters and knowledge. In that regard, the impact of certain practices of mass tourism should be carefully assessed—such as exporting one's local conditions to distant places without due consideration of the compatibility of lifestyles. Tourism should not create animosities and nurture mutual prejudices, but should help to overcome them.

In domestic politics: countries whose leaders have begun to question, or even reject outright, the rationale of multiculturalism may find it useful to study the actual experience with multicultural societies in other parts of the world, especially in post-colonial countries. Traditionally monocultural societies in the industrialized world that have become multicultural due to migration and economic globalization can learn from societies in states that were originally established on a multicultural basis. Such an exchange of intercultural experiences could play a constructive role in today's increasingly interconnected world, especially as regards the reduction of tensions within countries. The phasing out of racial, religious or ethnic profiling by immigration authorities will be another important contribution from the domestic side to an integrative approach to intercultural dialogue.

In the field of international law: the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions should be implemented systematically and in all its aspects. It is to be hoped that those major industrialized states that have not yet acceded to or ratified the convention will do so in the near future. According to the integrative approach which we are advocating here, support for a global dialogue among civilizations cannot be delinked from the commitment to interculturality as defined in Article 4(8) of the Convention—in the sense of "existence and equitable interaction of diverse cultures and the possibility of generating shared cultural expressions through dialogue and mutual respect".

In the domain of the internet and new social media: the last decades' rapid development of information technology that has enabled entirely new forms of interactive communication has also transformed, or is about to transform, societies and state systems. One may fairly assume that the interconnectivity and interactivity within today's global information village—not to speak of the wealth of information and educational material that has become available to users almost instantly—will gradually contribute to the normalization of cultural diversity in the eyes of the global public, and foster a more mature and lasting acceptance of differences. One cannot be a cosmopolitan in the worldwide web and a chauvinist at home.

The rationale behind measures to promote intercultural dialogue is that a sustainable order of peace requires a holistic approach that integrates all areas of global interaction, a purpose for which the UN, due to its universal and inclusive character, is ideally suited. In this era of ever increasing interdependence among people, and peoples of distinct cultural and religious identities, dealing with differences has itself become a cultural technique and, more than that, a skill that is indispensable for the prosperity and success of each and every community. The nations that are publicly committed to partnership and dialogue among civilizations must live up to this challenge. They should make clear that no state or people, as influential or powerful as they may be, can use the paradigm of dialogue to justify a strategy or policy of cultural superiority. The threat of culture wars and conflicts due to civilizational exceptionalism must be ended once and for all. The unity of mankind can only be preserved, and peace can only be maintained through the recognition of the diversity of the human race with all that this entails in terms of an integrated policy of economic, social and cultural cooperation.

Essay on Unity in Diversity

The concept of being united despite many differences is called Unity in Diversity. These differences can be of many types - religious, cultural, caste, creed, language, regional differences, and a host of other such things in society. It is of utmost importance to rise above these differences and remain united. In our childhood, we read the story where the father teaches unity. He shows how one stick is easy to break, while a bunch of sticks is hard to break. We need unity to remain strong at the societal, communal, and national levels.

Sadhguru, in one of his lectures, once said that India is successful to remain largely unharmed despite so many foreign invasions because of its diversity. The foreign enemies could not wrap their heads around how to rule such a diverse country. Their tactic to rule North India did not work in the South. Their clever policies to destroy Western India did not work in the East. As a result, nobody could destroy India as a whole.

Today, India is home to many cultures, religions, castes, and creeds. The same moon that the Hindu women see to break their fasts on Karva Chauth is also seen by the Muslims to break their fasts on the last day of Ramzan. We eat Bengal’s Rasgullas after finishing Hyderabadi Biryani. We dance to Punjabi foot-tapping tunes wherever we may live. India is progressing scientifically, culturally, and spiritually because of this unity.

India got independence in 1947. Despite that, she has grown rapidly. This would not have been possible if India was not united. On one hand, the Punjabis protected the country from Pakistan and China, on the other, Bengal and Bombay proved India’s cultural superiority. When the politicians from central India were busy fending off Chinese and American diplomatic obstacles, then, the Tamil scientist C.V. Raman and the Parsi Physicist Homi Bhaba showed the world that India is not a country to be underestimated. Later with APJ Abdul Kalam’s leadership, India became a Nuclear-armed country and no country dared to cross swords against India ever since.

India is strong because of the combined ideas of people belonging to different cultures, religions, and regions.  If one part of India gets wounded there are other parts to provide bandages.

The biggest challenge faced by the unity of India is religious enmity. Today there are people in politics, in society, and in our neighbouring countries who want to see chaos because of the religious riots. They all have their agendas. A broken country is easy to destroy. It is also good for vote-bank politics also.

Again, some states want to get separated from India despite so many years passing after independence. These demands are fuelled by both the neighbouring country’s invitation and by the negligence of the political leaders and their failure.

India is growing not because of any particular group of people - it is growing because of the combined work of the people of Punjab, Sindhu, Gujarat, Maratha, Dravida, Utkala, and Banga. Very often we forget to mention the contribution made by the people of the North East and Kashmir. The apples from Kashmir, the scenic beauty of Kashmir and the North East, the sweet songs are sung by the North Eastern people are all India’s pride. Let us rise above petty politics, let us rise above religious extremism, let us welcome the regional differences. Let us be ONE.

Important Tips To Write An Essay

Make a heading for your writings that is both interesting and relevant. It will help to pique the reader's curiosity and captivate their attention.

It should have a word count of 300 to 500 words. This is the ideal length; however, you may make it longer or shorter by using your creativity.

In your writing, use a clear and straightforward tone. The sentence's flow is disrupted by unneeded complex and difficult terms.

Use appropriate punctuation and spelling instead of making grammatical errors. The reader will be drawn away from the text if this is not done.

Gather your thoughts and create a basic framework before you begin writing the essay. This way, you can ensure that the story moves along smoothly and isn't a jumbled mess.

A mutual appreciation for differences in personality and life experiences.

Recognize that variety comprises not just various ways of being, but also various approaches to comprehending.

4.What is the format for essay writing?

Introduction

This is your essay's first paragraph. The writer introduces his topic in this section. In the introduction paragraph, you can give a very quick summary of your essay. Some paragraph writing skills may be useful in this situation. It is usually not very long, perhaps 4-6 lines.

The body of your essay is the most important part. The body of your essay is the meat that sits between the introduction and the conclusion. As a result, the essay's most crucial substance will be found here. This does not have to be contained inside a single paragraph. Depending on the content, it may run into two or more paragraphs.

This is the essay's final paragraph. Although a conclusion may just repeat the introduction paragraph, make sure the wording and syntax are distinct. A conclusion is also a good location to wrap up a story or a debate. You might conclude your essay by stating a moral or concluding a story. Make sure your essays are finished with a conclusion and no loose ends.

Speech on Unity in Diversity

Speech on unity in diversity – 1.

Hon’ble Vice President, Respected Principal, Respected Professors and Administration staff members and my dear fellow students,

Today is the Republic Day, the most important day for every Indian; the day when the Constitution of Independent India was formed. Like every year, our college celebrates this significant day with much enthusiasm and vigour. It’s a great honour for me to welcome you all and speak a few lines on this special occasion.

Since the time of Independence, India has witnessed a lot of changes at the political, social and cultural front. But one thing that remains intact is its’ ‘Unity in Diversity’. We all know, Unity is the most influential factor in solving the cultural and social problems. It infuses respect amongst people irrespective of their religious and cultural differences. India is famous for having multi-cultural system and yet people live together with peace and harmony.

India is a colourful country, inhabited by people who believe in different religions, follow different tradition, culture and have their individual belief and lifestyle; yet they come together to celebrate festivals of each other. While Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with a lot of vigour in West India, Diwali, Holi are the attractions for North, Navratra is Gujarat’s heart and Janmashtmi is UP’s soul. This is one of the factors which attract foreign tourists the most and they especially visit India during Holi, Diwali, EiD, Christmas, Lohri, etc. India has the oldest civilization and culture and some of which still being practised today. Though there is no dearth of diverse and assorted cultures in India, it is still an epitome of the famous Slogan ‘Unity in Diversity’.

Our present Indian civilization is sustained and nurtured by the multi-ethnicities of different states. We all are aware that diverse races such as Mughals, Britishers, etc. have migrated into India via sea and land routes. They conquered the country and settled here for several years.

India is a huge and populous country. It has 29 states with 22 official spoken languages, but in reality there are 150 different mother tongues spoken in different parts of the country. This is certainly amazing because despite so many differences, India still stands firm as a strong nation. People here are emotional and that’s the most popular language they understand which keep them united in all aspects. Not only language, but Indians vary from each other in food habit, attire, social and cultural behaviour, ethnicity, festivals and religious beliefs.

The political condition is stable in India and it allows multinational companies to start their venture, which opens up employment opportunities for the Indians. People in India are soft spoken and caring irrespective of the part they belong to.

Not to forget, there are some anti-social elements who try to corrupt the country by their behaviour and activities, yet India remains united. It is the force of our motherland, which give us so much of strength and tolerance to accept the adversity and promote ‘Unity in Diversity’.

Speech on Unity in Diversity – 2

Hello All, Good Evening!

Thanks for coming here and being a part of this discussion. It feels an honour to see you all from different fields gathered here. Today’s discussion is on one of the most relevant topics ‘Unity in Diversity’ that is ‘Anekta Mein Ekta,’ that is synonymous with India.

Today, I would like to share my view on what exactly this term ‘Unity in Diversity’ means. Doesn’t it feel strange when we hear the word Unity – which means being one and Diversity – which means differences, together in one phrase. Yes, it does feel! It makes us wonder how it is feasible that there is a common factor to seemingly heterogeneous things.

It is completely true that Unity in Diversity means the integration of differences; it means the oneness or togetherness in spite of the presence of diverse or different concepts. In the simplest way if I say, it means collating multiple types of things as one.

The best example of explaining Unity in Diversity is talking about the country ‘India’. Just one word India, and massive number of things quickly come to our mind. Isn’t it? Yes, indeed! Different castes, different cultures, different religion, different languages, different customs, different foods and what not! Clubbing of these varied or diverse things in one umbrella is the assimilation of differences and suits so well as an example of: Unity in Diversity.

Binding people of all religions in the bond of humanity is one of the greatest characteristics of India that fits the best as a point of clubbing the differences together at one angle. Visit any office, any school any market or any institution in India and you see the bundle of traditions or castes sitting and working right next to each other, in a spirit of wholeness.

Each diverse bits and pieces united in one bundle – India. This diverse spiral in India leads to it being one of the most famous tourist spot and attracts continuous flow of travellers throughout the year.

Hence if I conclude on my example of India, it’s true that it satisfies on the best parameters of being the country amongst all that is the most integrated, united and a perfect mix of different cultural and traditional flavours. It, indeed, is one of the countries in which people live with peace and harmony despite having multi-cultural systems.

Okay, give it a thought, if you ask a small kid, he will also agree that seeing a single colour on a sheet does not look that attractive in front of that other sheet which has a mix of two or more colours. Similarly, any place that has a combination or a blend of widely spread cultures or traditions seems to be more of an attraction worldwide in comparison to others.

Friends, it is very heartening to see Unity in Diversity around us. Hope you found this discussion useful!

Speech on Unity in Diversity – 3

Ladies and gentlemen!

I have great pleasure to be here today to share my views on the splendid plurality that marks our Indian society, and the unity that keeps us all together in peace and harmony.

With an area of more than 3 million square kilometers, India is the seventh largest country in the world. The physiographic features of the country are diverse and varied. There are the majestic Himalayas in the north, a number of mountain ranges across the country as also many, many rivers and lakes, and forests and mangroves around the country. Then, there is the Thar Desert; seas and the vast Indian Ocean. Likewise, the vegetation found in the different regions is equally diverse, and there is a great variety of fauna that inhabits the different habitats. Diversity is really the hallmark of India.

And what is interesting is the fact that our society too exhibits a great degree of diversity. There are people of different faiths, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Jews, who follow different traditions and customs and observe their particular festivals and occasions. Then, there is a plethora of cuisines that make it to the dining tables across the country, and there is a great diversity in the costumes and attires that people can be seen in. There is also a great multiplicity in the number of languages and dialects spoken by the people in different states. And just as humongous is, therefore, the literature that these various languages have churned out for the people to feed themselves on. Likewise, the arts, crafts, culture and folklore of each little area of the country is rich and has survived the ravages of time.

While there is a fantastic variety and fabulous diversity that marks Indian society, what is even more fascinating is the unity that weaves together the Indian populace.

What is it that unites the people? What keeps us all as Indians together through thick and thin? It is our passion to make India a glorious nation. We all share our Indian identity. We all live in and make our livelihood in the nation. We all share the pride of our nationhood.

In the stupendous journey to make India the truly great nation, we are coming together more than ever before. We owe everything to our nation. It gives us all a great sense of belonging. Our pride in the Indian nation brings us all, with all our diversity, into a unity that binds us in a spirit of common brotherhood. This sense of brotherhood is what gives our nation the strength to excel. And we value the human heritage that we all share.

Devotion to the cause of national integration has given the country its independent identity, and our loyalty to our pluralist ethos bestows on us a shared identity.

We pride ourselves in our diversity just as we feel great honour in our unity. And that will always be true.

Speech on Unity in Diversity – 4

Respected Principal, members of the faculty, and dear friends of the student community,

It is indeed a matter of great pleasure for me to be here with you today. As we come together to celebrate the unity in diversity that characterizes our Indian society, it seems in place to dwell on what we can, in our capacity as teachers and students, do to augment our unity, keeping intact the diversity that we are so fortunately endowed with.

Here, in this institution, like any other institution, what we have is a microcosm of what makes up India. The diversity that is to be seen in the Indian society is to be witnessed here too, isn’t it?

So if we wish the society that makes up India to be at peace and in harmony, celebrating and fostering its diversity as much as valuing and promoting its unity, we need to live and work in a similar spirit here in this academic institution that we belong to.

Let us celebrate the diversity of faiths by observing the various festivals at the institution with equal fervor, whether it is Diwali; Eid; Christmas; Buddha Purnima; Mahavir Jayanti; Guru Purab or Navroz.

Likewise, let us engage in reading the literature, if only translated in English or in Hindi, of the many vernacular languages of India. It will let us savour the linguistic and literary diversity of the country. And it will help us understand and appreciate the local flavour of the languages and through it the culture and folklore of the area from where the literature has emerged. This in itself will be an education for us. We are indeed fortunate to have the opportunity to be exposed to so many different languages in our country. Not many countries have this opportunity, in fact.

Likewise, we can, as students get to experience first-hand, the diversity the country is endowed with through the excursions we are afforded. In fact, it will help us appreciate and value the diversity, as for instance, the bio-diversity that we have. And this will help us in protecting our natural heritage.

In such attempts and activities, we shall discover our united efforts at protecting our multi-faceted heritage, whether it is of our architecture, culture, art or then nature and flora and fauna.

It is thus through the fostering of our diversity that we shall be successful in forging a unity of the people. In united action to protect our diverse heritage we shall actually be able to showcase our unity in diversity. India has always and shall always be the ideal of and the forerunner in supporting the principle of unity in diversity.

And we, as the younger generation, should enthusiastically engage in this most rewarding work of promoting the kaleidoscopic diversity of the country and the harmonious unity of the people of the land.

In this lies our best interest. And in this lies the highest interest of our great nation, India.

Shraddha Mishra

Key Points To Remember When Writing An Essay On ‘Unity In Diversity’ For Lower Primary Classes

10 lines on ‘unity in diversity’ for kids, a paragraph on ‘unity in diversity’ for children, essay on ‘unity in diversity’ in india for kids, long essay on ‘unity in diversity’ for children, what will your child learn from this essay.

Unity in diversity is a term that has been used in socio-cultural contexts since ancient generations. It means there is unity among the people despite geographic, ethnic, and religious differences. People living together harmoniously and speaking multiple languages are great examples of unity. This article will brief you on how to write an essay on unity in diversity for classes 1, 2, & 3. The unity in diversity essay in English will cover essential factors that influence unity and highlight its importance. Kids will learn a lot from this concept and will see society in a new light.

When many ethnic groups live together and get along by choice, not compulsion, it is called unity in diversity. Living in diversity can be beautiful and show us humanity’s uniqueness. Here are some key points to remember when writing about unity in diversity for lower primary classes:

  • Start with an introduction on unity and discuss how diversity and unity are related.
  • Cover examples of different cultures, ethnic groups, and religions which demonstrate the same.
  • Discuss the strengths of unity in diversity in your essay and its positive consequences.
  • End with a concluding paragraph highlighting its importance and summarise.

Respecting everyone and learning to work together in groups is a critical skill. Unity in diversity can be a lifelong skill and reap multiple benefits for the future. It is essential for the betterment of humanity and proves that we should not judge others based on their appearance, demographic, social, or economic status. An essay on this topic for classes 1 and 2 will cover all this and more. Here are a few lines on unity in diversity for your kids:

  • India is a nation that celebrates unity in diversity, and there are many living examples of communities here.
  • India has a great constitution that guarantees people’s rights despite belonging to different religions, cultures, and languages.
  • Saints promote the message of brotherhood and practice unity in diversity.
  • India, being a united country, can protect itself from foreign invasions and has successfully prevented attacks in the past.
  • Unity promotes teamwork despite challenges.
  • A unified country is easier to protect and ensures harmony.
  • All religions are diverse in India and have their own sects and cultural philosophies.
  • Unity in diversity teaches us that all living beings can bond and be tolerant of all values.
  • Many beautiful poems teach us the importance of unity across different religions.
  • Unity also ensures honesty among people.

Finding unity despite many differences is a skill that needs to be mastered with time. Here is a short paragraph on the unity in diversity concept:

There is a saying that alone we can do very little, but combined, we can do so much. Unity in diversity translates to this, and there are many similar slogans to it. Unity in diversity encourages thinking creatively. Diversity is built from unique traits, and much can be accomplished when you get cooperation from diverse groups. The best creative ideas are born from combined efforts, and many examples in history prove this. Mahatma Gandhi once said that a civilization’s test of time depends on unity. The only way to reach unity is through accepting diversity wholeheartedly. We can learn more about cooperation, empathy, and other values through unification.

Unity in diversity is an important concept to be learnt by kids. Given below is a short essay on the same.

Unity in diversity is important so all religions can co-exist and there is peace and harmony worldwide. Without unity, there would be chaos, and times can be rough. The most significant wars in history have shown us what happens when people get along and stand together. There is no point in fighting against each other, and understanding can go a long way towards achieving happiness. Unity is a word that starts with the letter ‘U,’ and yes, it means that we must begin by working on our minds first to unify with others. Unity is a great strength and a good source of identity. The art of thinking independently and acting together is very powerful and a force to be reckoned with. The concept ensures the ethical and moral evolution of humanity in difficult times. Its importance cannot be underestimated; only time reveals the consequences of not being unified when everyone faces hardships. Forgetting the regional, religious, and ethical differences and coming together in a time of need is the real essence of this concept.

Unity in diversity is a popular concept and common phrase used by people. It makes for a great topic for discussion right before exams and can be assigned as homework. Here is how to go about writing a long essay for class 3 on it:

The meaning of unity in diversity is to get along together despite having differences. India is a great example of unity in diversity as a nation because of how people from different religions, cultures, economic strata, castes, creeds, and languages connect.

India is densely populated, and the citizens practice different religions such as Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Jainism, Christianity, and more. People worship different gods and take their word for reverence. The people also celebrate festivals such as Holi, Diwali, Mahavir Jayanti and other festivals and events peacefully without worrying about facing protests from different cultures or religions.

You can’t have an understanding like this without unity and vice versa. When we spend too much time fighting against each other, it becomes futile, and all our efforts are wasted. Unity is used to bring peace and stability to this world. Kindness does not cost; by promoting mutual understanding, we go a long way towards becoming better human beings.

Unity between many cultures also shows how different religions and belief systems get along. It feels wonderful when everyone works in harmony and there is positive energy in the environment. Unity creates a state of togetherness, and the best ideas or efforts are born from unification. Every human has a purpose or mission; sometimes, the only way to become the best versions of ourselves is by establishing unity.

What Does ‘Unity In Diversity’ Mean?

The meaning of unity in diversity is to combine our efforts, promote peacefulness, and tolerate our differences in understanding different values.

What Is The Importance Of Unity In Diversity?

The importance of unity in diversity:

  • Improves morale and balances relationships
  • Develops mutual understanding, empathy, and emotional intelligence
  • Improves cooperation, coordination, and communal productivity
  • Promotes harmony and makes it easier to finish larger tasks
  • Enhances communication and brings together people through a collaborative approach

Disadvantages Of Unity In Diversity

The disadvantages of unity in diversity are:

  • Can invite terrorist groups or attract unwanted attention when working on projects
  • Takes time to get to know people, bond, and ask them to work with others
  • It can be hard to override religious beliefs and people who are too involved in certain societies or stereotypes
  • The cost of unifying people can be very high

Difference Between Unity And Diversity

Unity is the state of being undivided or ‘oneness,’ and diversity shows the uniqueness of being different.

Factors That Can Help To Improve Unity In Diversity

Factors that can help to improve unity in diversity are:

  • The chanting of national anthems and encouraging religious harmony
  • Geographic unity, where people of different cultures and demographics live in the same region
  • Unity through language where people who speak multiple languages interact
  • Religious unity means people of different religions who understand each other, despite differences

After reading this essay, your child will learn to get along with other kids. Unity in diversity is a concept that’s absolutely essential to understand for self-development.

You can best understand the benefits of unity in diversity by working on an essay with your kids. Get your children to invite their friends over, discuss ideas, and enjoy writing!

Long Speech On Unity In Diversity 500 Words In English

Good morning everyone,

I would like to present a speech on unity in diversity. I hope you will all appreciate.

I love my country India, which believes in the concept of unity in diversity. In our country we welcome all the cultures, languages, religions and people from different regions whole- heartedly.

There are a total of six religions present in India. They are Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism. All of these religions may not be followed by equal numbers of people, but they all are respected equally.

There are different festivals in different religions. The Hindus celebrate many festivals which are related to various thoughts, worship of thoughts, worship of idols and celebrations to spread happiness and love.

During the time of festivities, all the people of different religions, cultures and many more celebrate together. There are no discriminations made for participating in each other’s happiness.

Diwali and Holi are the most celebrated festivals in India. The whole country unites during this time although they live in diverse places.

This unity among all the people in this country shows our strength and our richness in culture. Each and everybody is individually respected and given importance. We all remain together as a team.

During national events, we all participate as a team; we do not discriminate against one another on the basis of religion, culture or language. We represent each culture very proudly and we represent it together that shows our unity.

Whenever there are cricket world cups going on, we unite as one whole country and cheer for our players’ victory. Whenever we have won the cricket world cup, we have celebrated it being together.

Being united as one nation, we are divided in 29 different states, but we use the same currency everywhere in our country. A common language Hindi, is spoken among all the people of the country.

We all stand united when we sing our national anthem. We are not considered by different religions or any other identities. We are considered together as Indian. Despite having different festivals in belonging to different regions, we celebrate it together.

Even from Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, the soldiers are selected from different regions, religions, cultures and languages. But they fight together and protect us from our enemies.

We have diverse cultures, languages; we pray to different forms of God in different ways and follow religious texts of different religions which lead to attain peace and we represent these differences together and celebrate our unity.

This unity in diversity in India has remained consistently from the time when we had to fight for our independence. This has made us strong. We have always remained together as one whole family has always believed in unity.

We Indians are like a giant tree which has many branches and leaves but has one trunk that connects us to our roots. The presence of such vast number of cultures, languages and religions prove the phrase “unity in diversity”.

Good morning to all my respected elders,

Allow me to present a speech on the topic Unity in Diversity.

It gives me immense joy and pleasure to say that India is a country that is the one and only example of the phrase “unity in diversity”. And I am one of her citizens.

We have many religions, cultures, ethnicity and cultures but we are all Indians. We have many cultures to represent but we represent it in unity. Whenever we spot any Indian people in a different country or we find something related to our country, we become very proud.

Whenever our sportsmen represent our country in some sports and win the first prize and make our country proud, our national anthem is played which pays respect to the winning team, it makes me very proud.

India is like our mother and we all are her children and we all love and respect our mother.

`UNITY IN DIVERSITY', INDONESIA'S MOTTO, SUMS UP `OUR COMMON HUMANITY', SAYS SECRETARY-GENERAL IN JAKARTA ADDRESS

Press release sg/sm/7303.

Following is the address of Secretary-General Kofi Annan to the Indonesian Council on World Affairs in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 16 February:

It is an honour to be here. Let me begin by saying how impressed I am by what I have seen so far during my first visit to Indonesia. And how conscious I am of the tremendous work the Government and people of your country have accomplished against some formidable odds. In a few short years, you have undergone more changes, challenges and upheavals than most people do in a lifetime.

The Asian financial crisis was neither Asian nor financial. But it was a crisis. As you know better than anyone, its impact was far more than financial. As people everywhere know, it went far beyond Asia. The rest of the world is therefore all the more impressed and inspired by what Indonesia is doing -- and has done already -- to overcome it.

Under difficult circumstances and in a short space of time, you have made significant progress in restoring macroeconomic stability, advancing structural reforms, and assuring food security. Of course, economic development has been a priority since the birth of your nation. But, in the past two years, because you have understood that people are the most precious resource of any nation, this work has taken on new dimensions.

You have understood that economic and social recovery cannot take hold without a system based on transparency, accountability and the rule of law. And so you are carrying out economic reform in tandem with political, legal and institutional reform. You have opted for a foreign policy built not on competition with your neighbours, not on confrontation with the rest of the world, but on cooperation and friendship. You have championed non-alignment and South-South cooperation. You have set an example to other developing countries.

We have seen what Indonesia is capable of in the field of regional cooperation. We have witnessed it in the indispensable strength and direction you have given to the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) since its inception -- something, indeed, that made ASEAN possible. Today, ASEAN is not

- 2 - Press Release SG/SM/7303 15 February 2000

only a well-functioning, indispensable reality in the region. It is a real force to be reckoned with far beyond the region. It is also a trusted partner of the United Nations in the field of development. I hope that in the field of peace and security, too, we will see the beginnings of closer cooperation between ASEAN and the United Nations.

In the United Nations, Indonesia's leadership and engagement give voice not only to this nation, but to the interests of all developing nations. Last month your able Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Makarim Wibisono, was elected President of the Economic and Social Council for the year 2000.

And last year, you crossed a new milestone. Thanks to last year's free and peaceful general election -- which, I am pleased to recall, the United Nations Development Programme helped you organize -- you now have a government with a broad popular mandate. Your political parties have shown wisdom and a spirit of statesmanlike compromise. This should now make it possible for their leaders to focus on an agenda of long-term stability, economic recovery and democracy. We all have a stake in this and we all want you to succeed.

Already, political reform has opened the door to a free and vibrant press. Civil society is becoming increasingly active and effective. Parliament has grown more assertive. The challenge now for Indonesia, its people and its friends -- including the United Nations -- is to build on the democratic institutions that have so gloriously emerged, so that they grow stronger tomorrow.

No one is born a good citizen; no nation is born a democracy. Rather, both are processes that continue to evolve over a lifetime. As your Foreign Minister has rightly noted, democracy is a habit that we need to cultivate consciously in ourselves. That is how we build enduring political, economic and social institutions. That is how we develop government that is answerable to citizens, and citizenry that is fully engaged in decisions that affect their country's future.

Strong institutions, underpinned by the will of the people and the rule of law, are crucial at all times and in all countries, but perhaps never more so than here and now, at this decisive time in Indonesia's history: a time when freedom and openness is bringing to the forefront a wide range of challenges. These challenges are not new in themselves, but many of them are made more difficult by the fact that, in the past, they were disregarded, dismissed or dealt with as purely security issues.

These challenges are many and various, and they all compete for the Government’s urgent attention. The country is suddenly faced with myriad political and social demands, all of which seem to require immediate answers. And of course you know that there are no ready-made solutions.

Among these challenges, probably none seems more threatening than the issue of separatism. It may well feel to some of you as if Indonesia's very

- 3 - Press Release SG/SM/7303 15 February 2000

existence is under attack from covert forces which believe the country is too large, and want to break it up. But, in fact, your case is not unique at all. Separatism is a challenge facing many countries. Each case involves different realities and conditions; each requires a different approach. But most of them do have one thing in common: although they may have security implications, they are, in essence, not security problems. They are political problems and, as such, they require political solutions.

Separatism is a much more complex issue than terrorism -– though it is often identified with terrorism, because some separatists use terrorism to promote their cause. We cannot say that separatism is always wrong. After all, many Member States of the United Nations today owe their existence to separatist movements in the past. But, please do not think that that means the United Nations is predisposed in favour of separatism, or that its purpose is to break up large States into smaller ones.

On the contrary, the purpose of the United Nations is to enable peoples to live together without conflict. If there is one thing we hate in the modern world, it is so-called ethnic cleansing -- the idea that people can live safely only among their own kind, and that the price of survival is to expel or exterminate anyone whose language, or religion or culture, is different from their own. The United Nations will oppose that idea wherever we are given political responsibilities -- from the Balkans to East Timor.

The truth is that many separatist movements are wrong. Breaking up large States into smaller ones is often a wasteful and unimaginative way of resolving political differences. But those who oppose separatism have got to show that their solution is less wasteful and more imaginative. Minorities have to be convinced that the State really belongs to them, as well as to the majority, and that both will be the losers if it breaks up. Conflict is almost certain to result if the State’s response to separatism causes widespread suffering in the region, or among the ethnic group concerned. The effect then is to make more people feel that the State is not their State, and so to provide separatism with new recruits.

Like other political problems, separatism can be resolved successfully only through patient and painstaking confidence-building and dialogue. By showing that staying together is the best solution for all concerned. There are no quick fixes, no short-cuts. Wounds that have festered for a long time cannot heal overnight. Nor can confidence be built or dialogue develop while fresh wounds are being inflicted. It is a process that requires all parties to renounce violence. And it requires special efforts to uphold human rights. If innocent civilians are not protected, if their rights are not safeguarded, their suffering can only breed further hatred.

Therefore, let me pay tribute to President Wahid and his Government for the emphasis they are putting on good governance, on the rule of law, on improved civil-military relations and on accountability for corruption and violations of human rights. Let me congratulate them on their courage in

- 4 - Press Release SG/SM/7303 15 February 2000

seeking to come to terms with the past, as an essential part of the search for a new way forward.

Let me also thank the Government for its clearly expressed desire to open a new chapter in Indonesia’s relations with East Timor. However difficult these relations may have been in the past 25 years when they were imposed by one side without regard for the wishes of the other, it remains true that East Timor and Indonesia are bound together by geography and history.

Now that the right of the Timorese people to their own State has been clearly recognized, their own leaders -- showing great magnanimity and statesmanship --have been the first to recognize how important it will be for that State to have good relations with Indonesia.

An independent East Timor is, therefore, not a threat to Indonesia’s security. Rather, it can enhance the stability and prospects of your region. By the very fact of its history and location, East Timor is connected with Portugal, Europe and the Iberian world, with Australia and the South Pacific. These countries and regions are crucial in assisting East Timor's transition to independence. And all of them, I believe, understand that East Timor has a far better chance to prosper as an independent State if Indonesia, too, is prosperous and successful.

But the world's stake in your success is far from being confined to the success of East Timor. As the world's fourth most populous country; as its largest Muslim-majority State; and as its largest nation of islands, straddling major shipping lanes, you carry great political weight and strategic importance. And you have used that position wisely.

You have staked the success of your economic recovery on a successful transition to democracy, and vice versa. This brave choice is not only the best hope for the people of Indonesia. It is also a shining example for the whole region -- and indeed the world. Your success will have implications reaching far beyond your borders. Your country's well-being is critical to long-term political stability in South-East Asia and beyond.

That is an awesome responsibility. It means you cannot afford to fail. You owe it to yourselves to succeed -- to yourselves, and to the world.

I wanted to entitle this speech "Unity in Diversity" not only because the words are enshrined on Indonesia's coat of arms, but also because the reality behind the words are the foundation of Indonesia's past, present and future. Ever since this old Javanese motto was introduced by a saint of the Majapahit Kingdom in the fifteenth century, it has signified the unity of the Indonesian people despite their diverse culture and ethnicity. It has summed up the meaning of our common humanity.

In this globalized world, it is more relevant than ever. Because in our interdependent world -- as the impact of the financial crisis reminded us --

- 5 - Press Release SG/SM/7303 15 February 2000

what affects one nation affects us all. What defines us as human beings is not race, creed or geography. What gives most people's lives purpose and content is the chance of a decent life in freedom from fear and freedom from want; a successful part in the global economy, for their children and their grandchildren.

Surely, that is what makes up our common humanity and the foundations of our unity. Surely, that is why we should honour and celebrate our diversity. And so, if there are any words I will always remember from this visit to Indonesia, it is Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. Indeed, I cannot think of a better motto for the world as a whole -- and particularly for our United Nations. I wish you every success on the road ahead, and I pledge that the United Nations will walk beside you on your journey. Terimah kasih.

They even speak different languages and have different traditional dresses. In spite of all of this, the people of India live in the common bond of the human race and brotherhood. Unity in diversity is the main characteristic of India that makes its name famous throughout the globe.

India is renowned due to its extensive cultural heritage as a result of its inhabitants of different religious beliefs. People who are part of different religions and cultures have different ways of life, which are based on their beliefs and interests. This also leads to an increase in different professional fields like art, music, dance, and drama (classical or folk, etc.). Traditions of the spiritual side of the inhabitants create greater piety for the other. The Ancient Indian Scriptures (Vedas and Upanishads) are excellent sources of spiritual knowledge for individuals. There are maharishis, rishis, priests, yogis, fathers, etc., in most religions, each with their own traditions of spirituality as per their respective Scripture.

If we take a look at the new nations, we will find diversity in the political and cultural heritage and even in sports. Every state is unique in particular cultures and values and has an individual identity. When viewed at a single glance, it displays its people's diversity but isn't united.

India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world and has diverse ethnic groups that practice diverse religions and cultures.

In spite of different religions, cultures, and even languages, the individuals of India share a common bond of love for one another. A vital harmony in the diversity of India is what makes India an excellent example of an era of cultural diversity. Every part of India, ranging from Jammu and Kashmir up to Kanyakumari, has its own way of life and culture.

From the beginning, the people of India have been a part of the same community and are respectful of the diversity of religions and traditions. Unity in diversity is an essential characteristic of this beautiful country and brings people together in the bonds of human rights and peace.

The unique struggle for freedom illustrates how to achieve Unity in Diversity, as the entire nation was on the same stage with different castes and faiths.

The diverse culture of India can be seen in the past. Moguls, English, and many other outside forces controlled India at different times and brought their traditions and cultures with them. Indians, tied by the love of their hearts, have always stood up to any culture and welcomed everyone with open arms.

Unity in diversity in India is justified by the fact that there are people who have different opinions on life, religion, economic, and political systems that are creating a nation of civilization through their views and moral conduct.

As an example, it is said that the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti temple in Ajmer has similar respect to it as the Vaishno Devi Shrine in Jammu.

With the largest population in the world, and its people belonging to different religions and ethnicities, India is today the most secular nation with a unique culture of harmony in diversity. With the exception of a handful of instances in which the people live in absolute harmony despite cultural barriers, languages, clothing, food, the color of their skin, caste, religion, and customs of social life.

Who doesn't realize that diversity has contributed to the strength of India's economy and political life? The country's rich historical and cultural heritage is for all the residents of the nation. People are proud of their heritage.

The differences in opinions, ways of living, and beliefs are strengths instead of weaknesses. They represent a broad spectrum of opinions, depth of tolerance, and even energy. In this world, people can have differing or even opposing views on religious beliefs, the way of life, and social structures, as well as growing economics, the system of government, and methods of spiritual advancement and redemption. Yet, all belong to one nation, a country that is Bharat. This prediction of total unity prevents trapping without allowing weak and contradictory arguments. Unity in a variety of ideas, cultures, and beliefs is the principal driving force of Indian nationalism.

The moral and spiritual beliefs of India have always remained identical, regardless of many cultural and political changes. They bolstered India's vital harmony. The story is endless to tell daily;

They have always given the top place and importance to the spiritual evolution and growth of their soul. Their primary and ultimate objective of existence is the liberation of the soul, also known as nirvana or moksha. The great saints, rishis, preachers, and philosophers have always been a part of the vast and diverse Indian cultural heritage, including the Vedas Gita, Ramayana, Kuran, Guru Granth Sahib, Bible, etc.

They have great respect from individuals from all categories and sections of the nation. They take part in celebrations with a lot of enthusiasm. The diverse cultures and beliefs are very well integrated into the Indian culture, and they have made stronger its unification and integrity.

The rulers, the princes, the kings, and religious dynasties changed, but India remained one and united. All of them were well-integrated into the modern world and its heritage. Incorporation, adaptation, and integration were characteristics of Indian culture and unity.

Specific selfish, corrupt, culturally indifferent individuals have attempted to destroy the cultural unity of India. They are currently trying to undermine the culture of unity in India. Yet, the timeless connection of family reveals that the efforts of these people have been unsuccessful. The socio-economic growth of India is dependent on its integration into the world and its capacity to hold incredible variety within it.

Gandhi Ji came from a spiritual Hindu family; however, he was equally tolerant of different religions and admired the fundamentals of every religion.

Gandhi Ji dreamed of a secular India and put in all efforts to achieve his vision. The unification of the masses in Libertarian movements was the primary weapon that forced the British Empire to free India from the oppression of the Britishers. Spiritual belief and its cultural influence played a crucial role in uniting the Indian people with a sense of unification. Hinduism is the religion that makes up large proportions of Indians and is either an apex of foreign cultural traditions or has significantly influenced the culture. Freedom of speech has been the most substantial nest evidence of India's unification in diversity. Each of these aspects is connected to the unity of India's culture.

In India, there are 29 states that have their own language and cultural traditions. However, in this diverse world, all Indians are united in their nation. Diversity can take many forms. It could be in the form of diverse religions or castes, sexualities, or colors. Take any organization; it will have individuals from various states, countries, colors, and, most importantly, languages working together. Diversity gives us the chance to learn about different religions, cultures, and also their celebrations. If people are able to adjust and form a harmonious relationship, it will be impossible for conflict to occur.

The primary reason conflicts arise from diversity is due to political conflict. The way we organize the world creates disputes. The people we choose to lead are examples. When they are elected, they attempt to split religious groups in order to gain more votes. If we embrace diversity and cherish our fellow human beings without considering the religion, caste, and ethnicity of other people, then no one can cause us to break our bonds. This is why we are known as the land of Unity in Diversity.

From the outside, it is apparent to be an eclectic mix of different components. Yet, it's a homogeneous unit like a chemical compound.

We must remember this as our strength and should not let any external force make us believe otherwise.
