ACSI Creative Writing Contest Awards

Four people standing in front of a wall holding an ACSI award for creative writing contest.

Haley Pacacha’s short story, “The Shadow”, was selected to be featured in the 2023 ACSI International Young Authors Anthology publication. This year, judges evaluated over 2,200 entries from more than 160 ACSI member schools. With just 94 notable superiors selected for the book, Haley’s entry is considered to be in the top 4% of all submissions!

ACSI Creative Writing Awards

Lower and Middle school students participated in the ACSI Creative Writing Festival last year.  In addition to celebrating the talents of emerging young writers, the Creative Writing Festival provides students with the opportunity to receive valuable feedback as they are encouraged to develop their writing skills.

Students submit creative writing pieces for evaluation. Two judges, provided by participating schools, evaluate each work submitted based on a rubric. Students are awarded based on their scores and receive evaluative comments from each judge.  Students in Grades 4–12 from ACSI member schools may participate.

The following students submitted work into the ACSI Creative Writing Festival and received awards! Congratulations to these students for their great writing pieces!

Superior Awards:  Anna Kathryn Britt and Haley Pacacha. E xcellent Awards:  Madison Chin, Miruna Chiribau, Emma Henderson, Kristen Makhlouf, Arianna Myers, and Ellie Vogelsang

Prince Writing Team Competes in Creative Writing Festival

The Prince Avenue Christian School Writing Team recently competed in the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) Creative Writing Festival.  The team of twenty-three 4th–7th graders, coached by Prince Media Specialist Danny Delgado and 5th-grade teacher Amy Tarelton, met twice a week during the spring semester for a writing master class with Prince alumna and published children’s author Mez Blume (’06).

The team covered a multitude of writing skills and topics and submitted their final products for adjudication.  Of the twenty-three stories, more than half were nominated for an “excellent” rating with one earning a “superior” rating.

The Writing Team has compiled all of their stories into a published anthology titled  The Chronicles of Prince Avenue: the Pen, the Paper, and the Wolverine .  The team enjoyed a book launch party in which each writer was recognized for his or her accomplishments and presented with a personal copy of the book.  The book will also be available to check out in the PACS Media Center.

Prince Lower School Principal Becky Callaway explains that the Writing Team is a valuable experience for the students providing a unique opportunity for growth.  “Studies show that a common thread connecting all great achievers, no matter the field, is their ability to communicate effectively.  This year’s publication, confirms that exponential growth in a subject area can happen, given the right nurturing environment.  The whole experience, crowned by this published anthology of stories, will be treasured by the writers and their readers for years to come.”

A Classical & Christ-Centered Education

History

Logos School opened its doors in September of 1981. It represented the concerted efforts and convictions of primarily three individuals: Doug Wilson, Shirley Quist, and Larry Lucas. Their goal was to provide high-quality Christian education for children. These three people were Logos School’s first and founding board of directors. Tom Garfield was hired in January 1981, to be Logos School’s first administrator.

Logos (which means “word” in Greek) began with eighteen students in rented facilities at the Paradise Hills Church of God. Primarily through word-of-mouth, the school grew quickly. Parents still say they are most pleased with the dedicated, loving staff members, the smaller class sizes, and the consistently high level of academic and biblical encouragement their children receive. As the school expanded in size and scope, much thought was given to curricular improvement. This in turn led to examining many publishers’ materials. Due to our classical emphasis, few of the existing publishers had appropriate items for our curriculum needs. Therefore the Logos teachers and administrators began writing their own, custom-made materials to use in the classrooms.

We had our first graduate in 1985 and have graduated hundreds of students since then. These young people have been accepted at dozens of colleges around the nation, including Hillsdale College, Dartmouth, Harvard, Wheaton, University of Idaho, University of Pennsylvania, New St. Andrews College, Washington State, Cornell, Princeton, and many more. Our students consistently score in the top 20% or higher of nationally recognized standardized tests. The rest of this website will give you an idea of the scope and activities families enjoy at Logos School.

The school moved to 110 Baker, a former roller rink, after extensive prayer, fund-raising, and remodeling, in November of 1987. Subsequent improvements have included a well-equipped library, two portable classroom units, adjoining property, and in February of 1999, the completion of a multi-use, 13,000 square foot gymnasium.

In 1991, Doug Wilson, a founding board member and teacher in the school, wrote a book entitled Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning. The book recalled how, over its ten-year history at that time, Logos School had attempted to follow the classical, Trivium model, as described by Dorothy Sayers in her 1940’s article, The Lost Tools of Learning, published in the National Review. Doug’s book, published on a nationwide scale, produced so much interest in the classical approach that Logos helped form the Association of Classical, Christian Schools (ACCS) . This organization continues to offer annual national conferences and practical assistance to forming and growing classical, Christian schools. Logos is a charter member of ACCS and was accredited by ACSI in 1994, and ACCS in 2000. Logos School sells many of its administrative and curriculum materials to sister schools and other people around the United States, as well as having its staff train other teachers and administrators in summer training and other conferences.

Logos School is governed primarily by the Word of God, as understood and applied by the school’s Board of Directors and administration. The School Board of Directors is comprised of ten individuals: seven permanent members, and three elected, 3-year term members. The board operates under the school’s adopted by-laws, vision and goals statements, and provides policies to the superintendent for implementation in the school.
