Sometimes for various reasons you'll need to provide proof of enrollment. This article breaks down what that consists of.

If you're a college student, there may be situations where you need to prove that you're enrolled. While it may seem like a transcript or a student email address should be enough, a third party may require an official document from your college or university. 

As a result, understanding how to show proof of enrollment in college is important. Here's what you need to know.

What Is Proof of Enrollment?

Proof of enrollment is an official document provided by a college or university that proves your enrollment status. Depending on the school and the type of enrollment verification you need, it may show any of the following information:

• Past, current and future terms you're enrolled
• The start and end dates of the term
• Your enrollment status: full-time, half-time or less than half-time
• Your expected graduation date
• Your class level (i.e., freshman, sophomore, junior or senior)
• Your current major of study
• Number of credit hours you've earned
• Your cumulative grade point average

Check with your school's registrar to find out what information is included when you request proof of enrollment. 

It's important to note that proof of enrollment is different from your college transcript. Your transcript is a complete record of your academic record with an educational institution. It's generally required if you're transferring to a different school or if you're applying for a graduate program.

This is because schools want to determine whether you're eligible for enrollment, and just knowing you've been enrolled in the past isn't enough for that.

Why Would I Need to Prove that I'm Enrolled?

There are several situations where it may be necessary to provide official documentation that you're enrolled in college. Examples include:

• Private student loans:  The federal government doesn't need proof of enrollment because your school's financial aid office handles your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) once you submit it. But if you're applying for private student loans, you generally need to provide proof of enrollment.
• Scholarships:  If you're applying for private scholarships — that's scholarships offered by private organizations and not your college or university — you may need to prove that you're enrolled in school in order to receive the funds. The same goes for grants offered by private organizations.
• Loan deferments:  Federal student loans and some private student loans allow you to defer your monthly payments if you return to school. But you may need to prove that you're enrolled at least half-time in order to qualify for the deferment period.
• Jury duty:  If you receive a summons for jury duty, it's generally mandatory. However, there are some ways to get out of it. For example, if you're a college student and performing jury duty would negatively impact your ability to attend classes and take exams, you may be excused by providing proof of enrollment.
• Car insurance:  A lot of car insurance carriers offer discounts to college students. But depending on the situation, you may need to show proof of enrollment to qualify for them.
• Medical coverage:  Many colleges and universities offer student health plans, but if yours doesn't, and you can't get coverage through your parents' health plan, some insurance companies offer student health insurance plans. If you want to buy a policy, though, you may need to prove your student status.
• Employment:  In some cases, you may need to provide proof of enrollment in order to get a job or an internship. Check with prospective employers to determine if this is a requirement.

Regardless of your reason for needing to show proof of enrollment, check with the person or organization requesting it to see what information they need, so you can ensure a speedy process.

How to Get Proof of Enrollment

The process of requesting proof of enrollment depends on your college or university. In many cases, you can submit a request online through the school's website. But if that's not available for you, you may need to visit the registrar's office to submit your request or send it in the mail.

If you're requesting proof of enrollment online through your student account, your school may already have all the information it needs on file. However, if you're requesting it in person or via mail — or sometimes online — you may need to give the following details:

• Your full name, including prior names
• Social Security number
• Date of birth
• Phone number and email address
• Dates of enrollment you want to verify
• Type of verification you need
• The address or fax number where the verification should be sent
• Your signature and the request date

Alternatively, the third party requesting your proof of enrollment may be able to contact the school directly to get the information they need. 

In general, there's no fee associated with a proof of enrollment request. However, if you also need transcripts, you may need to pay a fee to obtain those documents.

Once you receive your proof of enrollment, which can take a few days in some cases, you can provide it directly to the third party that's requesting it.

First-time applicant

If this is your first time getting a driver's license or ID, you will need one document from groups A, B, C, and D.

If you don't have a REAL ID , you are considered a first-time applicant. This is true even if you already have a driver's license or ID. To get a REAL ID, you will need:

• One document from groups A, B, and C, and
• Two documents from group D.

You can get a duplicate driver's license or ID. To do this, you need one document from group A. 

If necessary, you can correct your current driver's license or ID. To do this, you need one document from group A.

If your license or ID is expiring, you need to renew it. You will need one document from group A.

To update your address on a standard driver's license or ID, you also need one document from group D.

Non-citizens

Starting on July 1, 2024, non-U.S. citizens can apply for a regular driver's license. This new license will not require a Social Security Number (SSN). It is called a "Standard" license instead of a "Non-compliant" one. Instead of saying "Not for Federal Identification," it will be labeled as "Federal Limits Apply." Under the new law, the Secretary of State cannot report you to immigration if you are undocumented and want a driver’s license. 

Note: You cannot use this license for federal identification purposes, such as when you board a flight or enter federal buildings.

To get this new license, you need:

• To pass a driving test, 
• Have valid insurance, 
• Show some identification papers (see below for more detail), and 
• Prove that you've been living in Illinois for at least one year. 

If you're a documented immigrant, provide U.S. immigration documents issued by Homeland Security (like I-20 and I-94) or your social security card. 

If you're undocumented, you must show a valid foreign passport or consulate-issued ID. Make sure all these documents are not expiring in two years.

The identity cards of our class have already been printed as we students were informed a day before yesterday through a circular. • Persons who possess a high school diploma  or  California high school proficiency exam certification  or  a high school equivalency certificate.
• Persons 18 years of age or older  or  emancipated minors who do not possess a high school diploma or equivalent may be admitted by the college under provisional admission status.

The first step is creating your CCCApply account. This is a state-wide application platform that will make it easy for you to apply or re-apply to any California Community College. 

As CCCApply is not operated by the San Diego Community College District we are limited in the support that we can offer. If you have any trouble with the CCCApply portion of the application or need help accessing your CCCApply account you can contact CCCApply support .

Once you have completed your CCCApply account you will receive an alpha-numeric ID number. This is not your Student ID number. Click to continue to the San Diego Miramar College Application.

Once you've completed both steps you will receive multiple emails within a couple of hours providing you with your 10-digit Student ID and steps to create your mySDCCD Account.

Once your application is active you will receive an email invite to create your account. or you can create your mySDCCD  here .

What is my Student ID Number/User ID?

1. Check your initial welcome email

2. Check the bottom of any official district email

3. If you know your original 7-digit number, add three zeros to the beginning

4. Request your  Unofficial Transcript  and the number will be there (you will need to know/have applied with your SSN)

5. If none of the above have worked, please submit a  student help ticket   (1-2 business days). You will be asked to provide a government-issued photo ID. 

Do I need to create a mySDCCD account?

Absolutely, yes! mySDCCD is where you will register, drop, pay for classes, check your class schedule, access Canvas, Apply to Graduate, order transcripts and so much more!

My Password isn't working!

First, make sure that you aren't entering your Canvas password.

With the exception of  Special-Admit High School  students, all students receive an appointment to register online using the San Diego Community College District’s online registration system. 

By using the combined schedule of classes and the online registration system, a student can enroll in any available course offered at CCE, City, Mesa, or Miramar Colleges. Instructions for the class schedule and online registration are available on campus and on the web  here .  

RESPONSIBILITY FOR MAINTAINING ACCURATE REGISTRATION

It is the student's obligation to add, drop, or withdraw from classes before the deadlines stated in the class schedule. This applies even if the student has never attended class. Any student who anticipates difficulty in paying fees should check with the Financial Aid Office about eligibility and sources of assistance. Registration may be canceled for nonpayment of fees.

Residency is determined when a student applies for admission to the College. Please see the  Residency  page for detailed information regarding how Residency is determined and established. Details are found in the CA Education Code Section 68000, Title 5, sections 54000-54072.

HOLDS/SERVICE INDICATORS

A student will be able to view any account hold/service indicator on their College Student Dashboard in mySDCCD. Holds/Service Indicators may impact student services such as registration, transcripts, and other vital student services. ADDING CLASSES

Students add classes online through mySDCCD until the posted deadline. Find deadlines posted on the class schedule.

To add a class once the semester has begun, students must obtain a permission number from the instructor. Once a permission number is received, the student must add the class through mySDCCD. For online classes, students may email their instructors using the  Faculty Directory  search. Check out this guide on  adding a class with a permission number .

If you are attempting to register online and receive the error code:  Prerequisite Not Satisfied  please refer to  Counseling .

DROPPING CLASSES

The maximum study load for a  primary semester  (fall/spring) is 20 academic units including Exercise Science (formerly Physical Education) activity units.

Students are reminded that each unit of credit is calculated to involve a total of at least three hours of classroom and outside time per week. Thus, a 20-unit study load represents a minimum 60-hour workload each week. Students working full-time are advised NOT to attempt a full-time college program

Twelve units of credit are considered a minimum full-time program during a semester; nine units is three-quarters time, and six units, half-time.

The maximum study load for  summer session  is 12 academic units including Exercise Science (formerly Physical Education) activity units. Six units of credit is considered a minimum full-time during the summer session; four units is three-quarters time, and three units, half time.

ADMINISTRATIVE DROP

Registration may be administratively canceled for the following reasons:

• Failure to pay all mandatory fees in accordance with the fee payment schedule;
• Using a permission number issued to another student;
• Failure to meet the terms and conditions of a fee deferment;
• Failure to meet academic or progress standards;
• Denial of a "Petition to Challenge A Prerequisite."

MCAS CLASSES

San Diego Miramar College offers courses through the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. For more information about attending these classes please refer to the  Active Duty Military Students  page.

PRIORITY REGISTRATION SYSTEM

Please refer to  Page   23  of the Course Catalog for information about the priority registration system.

Once you have registered and paid all appropriate dues for the active semester you may obtain a student ID card from the Office of Admissions and Records (K1-207) free of charge.  Student ID Cards are required to access campus resources as well as to receive a  parking permit .  Cards  will not  be issued to students with holds (See "Holds" above for further information) or that are not registered in the active semester.

• Must be enrolled in at least one course
• All enrolled courses must be paid for
• Driver's License, State Identification Card, US Passport/Card, High School ID, Military ID (Driver's Permits  DO NOT  qualify as photo identification - Call Admissions if you have questions about accepted forms of ID)

When submitting the  Update SSN, Name, Birth Date  form to the support desk you will need to submit the following documentation via scan or photo:

• Federally Issued Photo ID (Driver's License, State ID Card, Passport, etc)
• Legal Documentation for the change (Marriage Certificate, Divorce Decree, Naturalization/Citizenship, Petition for Name Change, etc)
• Social Security Card
• Birth Certificate
