It is a real test to showcase all the skills you’ve gained over the years in a single project. Naturally, choosing the right topic from an ocean of architecture thesis topics is one of the biggest challenges you can face as a final year student, as the topic itself may define the trajectory of your thesis!

With the city centres choking with pollution, traffic congestion and over-population, many people are now moving to the suburbs in closed, secure and private gated communities. 20. Adaptive Reuse of Heritage Buildings

Who doesn’t like good showtime with family and friends? The use of digital media has increased multifold in the past couple of decades. A lot of creatives express themselves through digital content, increasing the need for more film , photo, animation and integrated studios . Imagine spending a weekend at a secluded place, close to nature, with all the facilities you need to relax and just de-stress! University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

School of architecture & urban planning, student work, thesis: element sustainable co-housing, maria wenzel.

Located on an urban site in the Riverwest neighborhood of Milwaukee this project is based on demographics, cooperatives, and political activism. The site is relevant on an analytical level as it is embedded within a typical residential block to catalyze a direct comparison of past and future design standards for housing in the area. The outdoor shared spaces include a plaza and lawn for large social gatherings, a wetland meditation garden for individual reflection, pedestrian paths, and a community vegetable garden.This project takes cues from but also criticizes earlier co-housing strategies. Sangaath Housing - M. Arch Thesis Project

Presenting "Sangaath Housing" - The name means a community which grows together. A community where contemporary design meets ancient vernacular architecture. 

Due to recent economic growth and political policies, Ahmedabad is expanding at exponential rate. The growth is enourmous, but new developments in the city are lacking the supporting infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, recreational parks etc. This thesis aims to develop a mixed-use gated community where the vernacular architecture of Ahmedabad is preserved and principles of sustainability are applied. This project can be used as module to create micro neighborhoods in the city for sustainable growth.

Pair of Dice, Para-Dice, Paradise: A Counter-Memorial to Victims of Police Brutality

This thesis is a proposal for a counter-memorial to victims of police brutality. The counter-memorial addresses scale by being both local and national, addresses materiality by privileging black aesthetics over politeness, addresses presence/absence by being more transient than permanent, and lastly, addresses site by being collective rather than singular. The result is an architecture that plays itself out over 18,000 police stations across America and the Washington Monument at the National Mall, two sites that are intrinsically linked through the architecture itself: negative “voids” at police stations whose positive counterparts aggregate at the Mall.

The critical question here is whether or not the system in which police brutality takes place can be reformed from within, or if people of color need to seek their utopia outside of these too-ironclad structures. This counter-memorial, when understood as an instrument of accountability (and therefore a real-time beacon that measures America’s capacity to either change or otherwise repeat the same violent patterns), ultimately provides us with an eventual answer.

The Magic Carpet

The Persian Carpet and the Persian Miniature painting have served as representation tools for the Persian Gar­den and the idea of paradise in Persian culture since antiquity. The word paradise derives from the Persian word pari-daeza meaning “walled enclosure.” The garden is always walled and stands in opposition to its landscape. This thesis investigates the idea of a contemporary image of paradise in the Iranian imagination by using carpets and miniature paintings as a tool for designing architecture. The garden, with its profound associations, provided a world of metaphor for the classical mystic poets. One of the manuscripts describing the Persian garden is called Haft Paykar – known as the Seven Domes – written by the 12th century Persian poet called Nizami. These types of manuscripts were made for Persian kings and contain within them miniature paintings and poetry describing battles, romances, tragedies, and triumphs that compromise Iran’s mythical and pre-Islamic history. The carpet is the repeating object in the minia­ture paintings of the manuscript. This thesis deconstructs the carpet in seven ways in order to digitally reconstruct the miniature paintings of the Seven Domes and the image of paradise with new techniques.

Up from the Past: Housing as Reparations on Chicago’s South Side

Do people know what the Illinois Institute of Technology and the South Side Planning Board and the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois and the United States government did to the Black Metropolis? If they know, do they care? Is it too hard to hold these entities accountable? If we held them accountable, could we find justice for those that were displaced? What would justice look like? What comes after Mecca? What types of spaces come after Mecca? Are they different than what was there before? Are they already there? What defines them? Can Reparations be housing? How many people are already doing this work? How many people are doing this work in academia? On the ground? Is the word “Reparations” dead? What do we draw from? Who is this for? Do white men own the legacy of the architecture that defined the Black Metropolis? How personal should this work be? How anecdotal? How quantitative? Does the design need to be inherently spatial? Or atmospheric? What should it feel like? How do I draw a feeling in Rhino? What are radical ways of looking? How do we reclaim racialized architecture? Do we? Should we even talk about these things?

Stacked Daydreams: Ceiling‐Scape for the Neglected

Elderly Care Adaptive Reuse of Hong Kong’s Vertical Factory

This thesis operates at the intersection of three domains of neglect:

• In the realm of building elements, the ceiling is often considered as an afterthought in the design process.
• Across building types, the vertical factory sits abandoned and anachronistic to its surroundings. It spiraled into disuse due to Hong Kong’s shifting economic focus.
• In society, the elderly are often subjected to social neglect, seen as a financial burden, and forced toward the fringes of society.

These parts experience obsolescence that led to indifference, and subsequently to boredom. I intend to draw the parallel of deterioration between the body of the elderly and the body of the vertical factory. Using a set of ceiling parts in the manner of prosthetics to reactivate the spaces into elderly care facilities, revert boredom to daydreams, and reimagine the concept of elderhood as an experimental second stage of life.

Citing the Native Genius

Reconstructing vernacular architecture in Hawai’i

For over 120 years, Americanization has tried to demean and erase Hawaiian language, culture, and architecture. In contemporary discourse, the vernacular architecture of Hawai’i is mostly referred to as ancient and vague. As with many Indigenous cultures, Western perspectives tend to fetishize or patronize the Hawaiian design aesthetic. Within this hierarchy of knowledge is a systemic assumption that Hawaiian vernacular architecture cannot effectively serve as a precedent resource for contemporary architects. Those who do reference the original vernacular will often classify it as utilitarian or resourceful. Regardless of intent, this narrative takes design agency away from the people involved. As a corrective, a respectful use of vernacular domestic form would benefit designers that are struggling to connect with Hawai’i’s cultural and architectural traditions.

Mining the European gaze and influence out of revivalist publications, archeological surveys and historic images reveal unique characteristics of Hawaiian domestic space. Geometric quotation and symbolic referencing are the foundational instruments in applying the discrete components, form, and organizational logic of the vernacular. The result is a design process that creates an amalgamation of decolonized form and contemporary technique. This residential project intends to revive Hawai’i’s erased domestic experience by revisiting the precolonial vernacular form and plan.

An architectural thesis is perhaps the most confusing for a student because of the range of typologies of buildings that exist. It also seems intimidating to pick your site program and do all the groundwork on your own. While choosing an architectural thesis topic, it is best to pick something that aligns with your passion and interest as well as one that is feasible. Natural disasters are inevitable. Disaster-resilient structures are build suitably for the natural disasters of the region while also incorporating design into it, keeping in mind the climatic nature of the location.

As humans, we have an innate love for nature, and the struggle between integrating nature and architecture is what biophilic design aims towards. To pick a topic where one would see minimal use of natural elements and incorporate biophilic design with it would be very beneficial.

Excerpt: ‘ Affordable Housing in Sanaa’s Rural Environment ’ is an architecture thesis by Ghassan Alhammadi from the Faculty of Engineering – Architecture Department – Sana’a University , that seeks to provide solutions for the housing crisis and displacement in Yemen and design an affordable housing model for the rural environment. The proposal aims to create a sustainable and self-sufficient village on a hillside and protect the agricultural land from concrete urban sprawl. Additionally, the project addresses Yemen’s present issues like food insecurity, poverty, a weak economy, and environmental degradation.

Introduction: Ancient Yemenis used to construct their homes on mountaintops and in valleys to preserve their agricultural lands. These agricultural lands now feature sprawling grey concrete slums due to population growth and the housing crisis. Sadly, the average yearly rate of urban sprawl is 3.7%, which implies that all of Yemen’s agricultural land will vanish over the course of the next thirty years. Yemen today deals with issues like food insecurity, poverty, a weak economy, and environmental degradation as a result.

The proposal aims to offer an architectural solution to the housing crisis and displacement in Yemen that are causing urban development on agricultural land. Providing the advantages of both rural and urban life in one location, a sustainable and self-sufficient village similar to the older times is proposed to be built on a hillside instead of a farmland. Reducing poverty, preventing desertification, and providing affordable housing in the rural environment are the three main objectives of this thesis.

Site Context

The site chosen for the intervention is a hillside rural area located in Sana’a, the capital and largest city in Yemen. The village is situated between agricultural valleys and mountain peaks. Based on agricultural production and knowledge, the site combines the benefits of rural and urban environments in one location with self-sufficiency. 

Due to the housing crisis of the past few decades, slums with concrete houses that are one to two stories tall have been built on these farming lands. The majority of the farmlands have been occupied by urban sprawl, which has been expanding daily as a result of population growth. Yemen currently features life-saving settlements in emergency situations because of the country’s poor economic condition, ongoing urbanisation of agricultural land, displacement, and housing constraints.

Design Process

Three key phases comprised the design process: (i) Form Derivation, (ii) Topographic Strategies, and (iii) Area Programming.

Form Derivation: In order to adapt to the mountainous terrain and align with the contour lines, a zig-zag form that resembled climbing steps was chosen. In response to population growth, different modules were created by dividing the form into separate units. These modules were oriented flexibly, ensuring daylighting in every unit while creating open spaces.

Topographic Strategies: In order to ensure a safe and viable environment, the site’s topography was studied and divided into three distinct zones. Agricultural land that needed to be preserved was located in Zone A; buildable land was identified in Zone B; and traditional villages on hillsides constituted Zone C. To adapt to the zigzag form, a pedestrian road was added, and hydraulic buffers were installed to encourage rainwater harvesting. In order to encourage a healthy lifestyle, additional zones were added for food production.

Area Programming: To fulfil the vision of developing a self-sufficient village, a variety of sustainable features, such as terrace farming, rainwater collection, and waste segregation, were incorporated together with dwellings that varied in size, community centres, a prayer hall, and marketplaces. In order to ensure seamless circulation, distinct pathways that serve different functions, such as vehicular and pedestrian activity, visitor traffic, and rainwater collection, were defined.

Final Outcome

The final outcome is a village that combines the benefits of both an urban and rural lifestyle. The rural aspect of the project is driven by factors like fresh food, healthy living, and self-sufficiency, whereas the urban part is guided by factors like services, education, and accessibility. In response to the site’s topography and climate, the masterplan features a staggered cluster layout. The intervention fosters a sustainable living environment by preserving the farmlands’ natural characteristics without altering the site’s terrain.

The project offers a range of dwelling units with varying sizes and layouts to meet the needs of different family typologies. Every unit is ensured to have open spaces with adequate daylighting thanks to the massing of the clusters. Apart from the housing units, the project includes areas such as a community centre, hammam, marketplaces, and prayer hall to promote interaction at the community level. By limiting vehicle access and adding unique, friendly passenger pathways that offer stunning views of the surroundings, the layout promotes pedestrian movement.

Yemeni vernacular architecture served as an inspiration for the building’s architectural language. For the fenestrations, a consistent arch profile has been adopted, and spaces with cultural significance feature domed roof structures. The majority of the structure has been constructed using stone, a locally available material.

Sustainable practices have been prioritised in order to address the issues of poverty, a weak economy, food insecurity, and environmental damage in addition to achieving the objective of self-sufficiency. The agricultural land is utilised for producing food and is preserved in good condition. Using green roofs connecting to naturally created swale areas all over the site, a rainwater harvesting system has been implemented.

The layout features multiple rainwater tanks that supply water to the farmlands. A method for segregating waste enables the gasification of biomass and power generation, supplying fuel and gas to the buildings. In this way, the initiative utilises recycling methods to provide sustainable energy sources.

Conclusion: The project provides essential sustainable solutions to Yemen’s housing crisis and displacement while addressing the country’s poverty, weak economy, and desertification. This thesis succeeds in creating an affordable, self-sufficient housing model for the rural environment while protecting agricultural lands and offering better alternatives that could replace concrete urban sprawl.

Description/Abstract

This thesis contends that growing cities around the world are out-pricing the younger demographic from the urban fabric. It recognizes that constantly rising real estate markets are forcing millennials outside of city centers. It understands that socially, the younger demographic provide the energy and atmosphere required to keep the city alive, and ultimately believes that in order fro young professionals to reclaim their position int he hosing market, a new typology of hosing need to be established.

Such housing takes increasing urban density into consideration, and provides an appropriate dwelling supply for expensive cities moving forward. It is a typology that builds upon, the ADAPT NYC initiative started by Mayor Bloomberg and promotes micro unit housing as the progressive solution to expensive rental rates around the world.

However, this thesis also acknowledges the existing sociopolitical and economic issues surrounding micro unit housing today. Current zoning ordinances do no permit this typology and developers need to be grated government-owned land in order to both construct and find profit in each venture.

As a solution, this thesis contends that micro unit housing should become a subdivision within a larger mixed-use development. It argues that through a series of financial models, a flexible combination of commercial, retail, and high-end residential spaces will establish the economic feasibility for developers to provide micro unit hosing at an affordable rate.

Additionally, this proposal addresses the zoning allowances architecturally through the invention of a new apartment archetype: a residential typology that provide a series of shared communal spaces, which provide programs to the inhabitants of an otherwise 350 square foot apartment unit.

Communal spaces, which are comprised of bars, cafes, lounges, offices, and so on, will begin to connect all of the building's occupants, while bridging the political gap existing within a mixed-use development, and merging the building into one holistic community.

In Nigeria, statistics has shown that over 7 out of every 10 people live below the minimum poverty level and 9 of every 10 are in the low-income group (Fadairo & Olotuah, 2013). This indicates that, these people cannot provide housing for themselves, they need intervention from government through public low-cost housing. Public Low-cost housing has been defined as constructed public residential houses funded by the government or in partnership with the government under the public-private partnership (PPP) scheme, to provide affordable housing for low-income people (Ayoola & Amole, 2014; Makinde, 2014a). The results indicated that, there is need to consider users preferences in construction of public low-cost housing so as achieve maximum satisfaction.

Adequate shelter for all people is one of the crucial challenges faced by the developing countries like India. In India by 2013, shortage of 30 million homes with almost 99% of the shortfall coming from families earning less than 2 lakhs rupees per year (EWS & LIG segment). According to census 2011 India has 65 million of slum population and by 2017 it will outreach 104 million. The country had a population of 1210.98 million, out of which 377.10(31.16%) lives in urban areas. This growing concentration of people in urban areas has led to problems of land shortage, housing shortfall and has also several basic amenities such as water, power and open spaces of towns and cities. Urbanization has resulted in people increasingly living in slums and squatter settlements and has deteriorated the housing conditions of the economically weaker section of society. This is primarily due to skyrocketing prices of land and real estate in urban areas that have forced the poor and economically weaker section of the society to occupy the marginal lands typified by poor housing stock, congestion and obsolescence. Considering these factors there currently exists a wide gap between the demand and supply of housing (both in terms of quantity and quality) in urban areas. Hence, it has become a necessity for developing country like India to adopt cost effective, innovative housing for the construction of houses for enabling the people to construct houses at affordable cost. Our project aims to reduce the cost of building by replacing ordinary material with latest one and suggest new methodology which will reduce cost as well as do not affect the strength of the structure.

A housing problem of the problems facing the countries, especially the developing countries. It is essential to provide housing units at the level commensurate with the rapid population growth. Many countries have applied structural policies to confront this problem by relying on the available material and human resources to provide as many housing units to occupy by those who do not have good housing for shelter. This research targeted the field of affordable housing units in general and the impact of use Structural innovative system in particular, and the impact of the implementation of the new system on the cost and Duration of time needed to accomplish. In order to reach the aim of the research was take advantage of previous research and studies in the field of implementation of housing units by insulated concrete forms technique shorten to (ICF) technique and adopt this technique for the implementation of residential complexes. The research reached to propose a new technique for the construction of housing units by the construction of a typical residential house at the headquarters of the General Authority for Housing using the proposed technique. An economic comparison was conducted between the proposed system for construction and traditional commonly used building systems of massive wall system and frame wall system. It has been found that the proposed system is better than commonly used alternatives to an economic life of 33 years,

Affordable Housing is fast taking centre stage in the national agenda. In India, affordable housing is a term largely used in the urban context. This is more a matter of administrative logistics: at the national level, the rural housing sector falls within the purview of the Ministry of Rural Development, while the “Housing and Human Settlements” in urban areas is the jurisdiction of The Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. It is the latter ministry that has spearheaded affordable housing as a concept and policy.Developing affordable housing on a large scale is the greatest challenge in urban India today, promising a solution to the proliferation of slums, unorganized real estate development, unplanned growth and transit congestion. It is vital that certain critical issues are addressed urgently to make affordable housing a possibility. Affordable housing is a larger concept than low cost housing, it includes within its ambit low and middle income group housing with a larger basic amenities like schools and hospitals. From the above, it is clear that a one size fits all approach cannot and will not work in the affordable housing sector.

Chapter two, besides giving a general outline of the investigated case studies, provides further details on the assessment grid that has been created and that involves all subjects while at the same time summarizes the themes that have emerged from the analysis of affordable housing projects and the traditional forms found in them. Besides offering a much clearer picture of the population sections that are interested by this research, we look at the different kinds of design approaches and address the gestures of dwelling (resting, socializing, feeding and taking care of our physical needs, ...) as well as of equipment and fittings together with the shape of domestic space and its relationship with the context. This first preliminary review has reviewed the collected materials without operating a restrictive geographic selection, apart from choosing projects belonging to a developing country or to a severely underdeveloped area. Wherever possible, transformations operated in the name of tradition have been highlighted both in the case that they are recalling tradition or that they are rejecting it.

In Dhaka significantly the numbers of slums are increasing everyday due to heavy influx of migrants from rural areas. In these slum areas all sorts of services are inadequate and general environmental scenario is hazardous. Data has been collected from field survey, some secondary sources and focused group discussion. The study focuses on the status and practice regarding water, sanitation and hygiene. This paper has also explored that assessment of water resource availability and quality at source point of consumption; problems faced in getting safe drinking water; and knowledge of the features of hygienic latrine; awareness about health. The study is based on the health problems highlighting factors affecting the health of the population in slums for example due to general environmental condition, water supply system and the sanitation system. The study also focuses on other various reasons associated to poor living condition and their impact on health of the slum population. It is suggested that if conditions are to be improved then the problem of the poor living conditions and the health service needs to be addressed through the application of proper measures and planning by the different sectors of government and private sectors. Including all these problems Dhaka city is should slum housing problem immediately. A shelter can be solution of all problems. As they need permanent solution .i choose housing for shelter and container made house for housing solution. My motivation is to providing cheaper housing solution for devoted and migrated rural people in hearts of urban.
