How To Prepare Research Paper?

Preparing a research paper involves several key steps, from selecting a topic to writing and formatting the final document. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to prepare a research paper:

  • Select a Topic: Choose a topic that interests you and aligns with the requirements of your assignment or research objectives. Consider the scope of the topic, its relevance, and the availability of resources for conducting research.
  • Conduct Background Research: Read up on books and studies that talk about the same things you want to research. This will help you see what people already know, find out where there are still things we don’t know, and make your research questions or ideas better.
  • Develop a Research Question or Thesis Statement: Formulate a clear and focused research question or thesis statement that guides your study. Your research question should be specific, relevant, and capable of being answered through empirical investigation.
  • Create an Outline: Organize your ideas and research findings into a logical structure by creating an outline for your research paper. Outline the introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion sections, along with any subheadings or subsections.
  • Write the Introduction: Begin your research paper with an interesting introduction. Share some basic info about your topic, explain why your study is important, and clearly state what you’ll be focusing on in your research. The introduction should also outline the structure of the paper.
  • Review the Literature: Conduct a comprehensive review of relevant literature to provide context for your study, support your arguments, and identify gaps in existing research. Summarize key findings, theories, and methodologies from previous studies in your literature review.
  • Describe the Methodology: Clearly explain the research design, methods, and procedures used to collect and analyze data. Include details on the population/sample, data collection instruments, data analysis techniques, and any ethical considerations.
  • Present the Results: Report the findings of your study in a clear and concise manner. Use tables, graphs, or charts to present quantitative data, and provide descriptive analysis for qualitative data. Ensure that your results are relevant to your research question or thesis statement.
  • Discuss the Implications: Interpret the results of your study and discuss their implications that are for theory, practice, or policy. Analyze the strengths and limitations of your research, address any unexpected findings, and propose recommendations for future research or action.
  • Write the Conclusion: Summarize the key findings and contributions of your study in the conclusion section. Restate your research question or thesis statement, review the main points that you have discussed in the paper, and highlight the significance of your research in advancing knowledge in the field.
  • Revise and Edit: Review your research paper for clarity, coherence, and accuracy. Ensure that your arguments are well-supported by evidence, your writing is concise and precise, and your paper follows the appropriate style and formatting guidelines.
  • Cite Sources: Acknowledge the contributions of other scholars by properly citing their work in your research paper. Use a consistent citation style (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago) and include a reference list or bibliography at the end of your paper.
  • Proofread: Carefully proofread your research paper to correct any spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors. Pay attention to formatting details such as margins, font size, and line spacing to ensure consistency throughout the document.
  • Get Feedback: Seek feedback from peers, instructors, or mentors to improve the quality of your research paper. Consider their suggestions for revision and make appropriate changes to strengthen your arguments and clarify your writing.

Business in Contemporary World

Business in contemporary world is one of increasing diversity. Undertaking commerce even by an individual can mean working globally through a welter of new media with opportunities of all sorts rapidly appearing. The boundaries, scope, content, structures, and processes of a business activity can morph into completely different ones in the course of a project. Contemporary businesses and certainly future businesses find it incumbent upon them to fit with the requirements of environmental and economic sustainability of the others who inhabit our world. Of course the practices, technologies, and tools of business are currently utilized by professional managers in government, education, arts organizations, not-for-profit organizations, political organizations, social service organizations, etc. That is, rather than having an opera company run by a former singer who charms its patrons, what is expected is a former singer who is a professional manager who is adept at grappling with the issues, requirements, and expectations associated with responsible business.

Globalization is a by-word of the current business epoch. Today it is normal for a business in a developed country to employ clerks, technicians, salespeople, customer relations agents, and increasingly professionals such as managers, engineers, and researchers in emerging market nations such as India, China, and Vietnam. Increasingly, corporate teams work virtually with team members distributed around the world. New technologies provide interfaces that are coming to replicate and in some ways even improve on the kind of exchanges that traditionally were only available in face-to-face situations.

In the post-Enron, post-Bhopal, post–Three Mile Island, post–Exxon Valdez, and post-9/11 environment, business and society issues and topics refract off each other with new meanings. For example, what in the past might have just been a climate of corruption, bribery, ineptness, and lack of accountability, now in this or that far-flung place today might have global implications. So, the editor of this volume was engaged by Columbia University to teach cuttingedge human resource management (HRM) topics in a Russian oil company in Nizhny Vartovsk, Siberia, where just as in U.S. oil companies, the sharing of cutting-edge management technologies and approaches was proceeding at a rapid rate. Notions such as whistle-blowing, managing stakeholders, alleviating poverty through business strategy, and microfinance are increasingly important for those interested in understanding business to know.

Management information systems are a new universe of technologies, and the terms and topics that encompass them, from just 15 years ago. New applications and functions have proliferated, including e-commerce, the blogosphere, social networking (including Facebook and LinkedIn), digital dashboards, e-learning, executive support systems, internet, intranets, extranets, identity theft, moblogs, privacy, spam, transaction processing systems, virtualization, virtual companies, VoIP, business process reengineering, data warehouses, and customer relationship management (CRM).

Operations management is a field of business that is undergoing many structural and technological changes. The quality management revolution starting in Japan and developing in the mid-80s in the United States and Europe has been overtaken by new issues of global supply chain procurement and distribution. New approaches to designing services take on more import in a service economy. Service blueprinting, front office and back office activities, and servicescapes are among the new by-words. Location analysis, hybrid layout design, and process product and fixed position layouts are increasingly structured in their deployment. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is increasingly sophisticated with new connectivity and integration issues.

Management strategy has been redefined in the United States by agency theory, the resource-based view of the firm, and such important accounting legislation as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. New types of financial instruments and their deployment through a wider than traditional spectrum of organizational types resulted from deregulation. The looseness and oversight of this new environment resulted in a looseness in financial dealings. Financial institutions worldwide have been shaken by the great mortgage crisis of 2008. This followed the bailing out of Bear, Stearns, & Co. Inc., a leading global investment banking and securities trading firm, by the American federal government. The world economy is increasingly integrated. The European Union (EU) and NAFTA are just two of many such international structures that foster freer trade. The high price of oil in 2008 reflects the ongoing power of OPEC.

Marketing is no longer just a department in a company; rather it entails the collaboration of many departments, vendors, and even customers working together to market products and services. Today we find companies such as Dunkin’ Donuts focusing on the quick provision of inexpensive cups of coffee to go and at the same time other companies such as Starbucks going beyond that to market an entire experience, lifestyle, variety of flavors, and even music to their target market.

How to Choose a Business Research Paper Topic

Choosing a suitable business research paper topic can be a challenging task, especially given the broad scope of the field. However, selecting a good topic is essential to the success of your research paper. In this section, we will provide some guidance to help you choose a suitable topic for your business research paper.

Consider Your Interests and Passions

The first step in choosing a business research paper topic is to consider your interests and passions. Business is a multifaceted field that covers a wide range of subfields, from finance to marketing to management. Therefore, it is essential to choose a topic that you are passionate about and interested in. This will make the research process more enjoyable and meaningful for you.

To identify your area of interest, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What subfield of business studies interests me the most?
  • What specific topics or issues within that subfield do I find most compelling?

Once you have identified your general area of interest, it’s time to narrow down your topic.

Narrow Down Your Topic

To narrow down your business research paper topic, consider the specific aspects of the topic that you would like to explore and the research questions that you want to answer. For example, if you are interested in marketing, you might narrow your topic down to a specific product or service, a particular target market, or a specific aspect of the marketing mix.

To help you narrow down your topic, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What specific aspect of the topic interests me the most?
  • What specific research question do I want to answer?
  • How can I make my research question more specific and focused?
  • What specific population or group do I want to study?

By answering these questions, you can identify a specific topic that is both interesting and feasible.

Consider the Relevance and Significance of the Topic

When choosing a business research paper topic, it is essential to consider the relevance and significance of the topic. You should choose a topic that is relevant to current business issues and trends and has the potential to contribute to the field of business studies.

To assess the relevance and significance of your topic, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is the current state of research on this topic?
  • What are the potential implications of my research for businesses or the industry?
  • How can my research contribute to the field of business studies?

By choosing a topic that is relevant and significant, you can ensure that your research paper has a meaningful impact.

Consult with Your Instructor or Advisor

Your instructor or advisor can offer valuable guidance in selecting a business research paper topic. They may be able to suggest potential topics or point you in the direction of useful resources. Moreover, your instructor or advisor can also help you identify the appropriate subfield of business studies that aligns with your research interests.

When consulting with your instructor or advisor, be sure to ask about any specific guidelines or requirements for the research paper. Some instructors may have specific expectations for the research question or methodology, so it is essential to clarify these requirements before finalizing your topic.

Consider Available Resources

Before finalizing your business research paper topic, it is important to consider the resources that are available to you. This includes access to relevant literature, data sources, and software or tools necessary for analysis.

In addition, consider the availability of relevant scholarly literature and secondary sources. Make sure that you have access to the appropriate journals, books, and articles that you will need to support your research. If you find that the resources you need are limited, consider narrowing down your topic or revising your research question.

Look for Research Gaps

Finally, it is important to look for research gaps in the literature when choosing your business research paper topic. Identifying gaps in the literature can help you choose a research question that is original and contributes to the field of business studies.

To identify research gaps, review the literature on your chosen topic and ask yourself the following questions:

  • What research questions have been answered on this topic?
  • What questions have not been answered or have not been fully explored?
  • What aspects of the topic have not been addressed in the literature?
  • What are the current controversies or debates in the literature on this topic?

By identifying research gaps, you can develop a research question that is original and adds value to the field of business studies.

Choosing a business research paper topic can be challenging, but it is an essential step in the research process. By considering your interests, consulting with your instructor or advisor, evaluating available resources, and identifying research gaps, you can select a suitable topic that is both interesting and feasible. Remember, a good topic is the foundation of a successful research paper. In the next section, we will provide guidance on how to write a business research paper, including tips on conducting research, analyzing data, and presenting your findings.

How to Write a Business Research Paper

Once you have chosen a suitable topic for your business research paper, it is time to start writing. In this section, we will provide guidance on how to structure your research paper, conduct research, analyze data, and present your findings.

Structure of a Business Research Paper

The structure of a business research paper typically includes the following sections:

  • Introduction: Provides an overview of the research question, objectives, and significance of the study.
  • Literature Review: Summarizes and synthesizes relevant literature on the topic.
  • Research Methods: Describes the research design, methods, and procedures used to collect and analyze data.
  • Findings: Presents the results of the study, including statistical analyses and visual representations of the data.
  • Discussion: Analyzes and interprets the results, evaluates the research question, and discusses the implications of the findings.
  • Conclusion: Summarizes the main findings and discusses the implications of the study for future research.

Conducting Research

Before beginning your research paper, it is important to conduct a thorough review of the literature. This will help you identify gaps in the research and develop a research question that contributes to the field of business studies.

When conducting research, make sure to use reliable and relevant sources, such as academic journals, books, and credible online sources. Keep detailed notes and maintain careful records of all research activities to help organize your data and ensure the accuracy of your findings.

Analyzing Data

Once you have collected your data, it is time to analyze it. This may involve using statistical software, qualitative analysis software, or other tools to examine patterns and relationships in the data.

When analyzing your data, be sure to consider the limitations and potential biases of your methods. For example, if you collected data through surveys, consider the potential biases introduced by self-reporting.

Presenting Findings

When presenting your findings, it is important to be clear and concise. Use visual aids such as tables, graphs, and charts to illustrate your findings and make them more accessible to readers.

Consider the appropriate format for presenting your data. For example, if you have collected qualitative data, consider using narrative descriptions or quotes to convey your findings.

Citation and Referencing

Finally, it is essential to properly cite and reference all sources used in your research paper. This includes citing relevant literature and acknowledging the contributions of collaborators or participants in your study.

Make sure to follow the appropriate citation style for business research papers, such as APA or Harvard style. This will ensure that your research paper meets the standards of academic integrity and professionalism.

Additional Tips

Here are some additional tips to keep in mind when writing your business research paper:

  • Keep your writing clear and concise. Use simple language and avoid jargon or technical terms that may be difficult for readers to understand.
  • Use headings and subheadings to organize your paper and make it easier to read.
  • Revise and edit your paper thoroughly to ensure that it is error-free and well-structured.
  • Seek feedback from peers, instructors, or mentors to improve the quality of your research paper.

Writing a business research paper requires careful planning and attention to detail. By following the general structure of a business research paper, conducting thorough research, analyzing data carefully, and properly citing and referencing all sources, you can produce a successful research paper that contributes to the field of business studies.

Business research: Definition

Quantitative research methods, qualitative research methods, advantages of business research, disadvantages of business research, importance of business research.

Business research is a process of acquiring detailed information on all the areas of business and using such information to maximize the sales and profit of the business. Such a study helps companies determine which product/service is most profitable or in demand. In simple words, it can be stated as the acquisition of information or knowledge for professional or commercial purposes to determine opportunities and goals for a business.

Business research can be done for anything and everything. In general, when people speak about business research design , it means asking research questions to know where the money can be spent to increase sales, profits, or market share. Such research is critical to make wise and informed decisions.

LEARN ABOUT: Research Process Steps

For example: A mobile company wants to launch a new model in the market. But they are not aware of what are the dimensions of a mobile that are in most demand. Hence, the company conducts business research using various methods to gather information, and the same is then evaluated, and conclusions are drawn as to what dimensions are most in demand.

This will enable the researcher to make wise decisions to position his phone at the right price in the market and hence acquire a larger market share.

Business research: Types and methodologies

Business research is a part of the business intelligence process. It is usually conducted to determine whether a company can succeed in a new region, to understand its competitors, or simply select a marketing approach for a product. This research can be carried out using steps in qualitative research methods or quantitative research methods.

Quantitative research methods are research methods that deal with numbers. It is a systematic empirical investigation using statistical, mathematical, or computational techniques . Such methods usually start with data collection and then proceed to statistical analysis using various methods. The following are some of the research methods used to carry out business research.

LEARN ABOUT: Data Management Framework

Survey research

Survey research is one of the most widely used methods to gather data, especially for conducting business research. Surveys involve asking various survey questions to a set of audiences through various types like online polls, online surveys, questionnaires, etc. Nowadays, most of the major corporations use this method to gather data and use it to understand the market and make appropriate business decisions.

Various types of surveys, like cross-sectional studies , which need to collect data from a set of audiences at a given point of time, or longitudinal surveys which are needed to collect data from a set of audiences across various time durations in order to understand changes in the respondents’ behavior are used to conduct survey research. With the advancement in technology, surveys can now be sent online through email or social media .

For example: A company wants to know the NPS score for their website i.e. how satisfied are people who are visiting their website. An increase in traffic to their website or the audience spending more time on a website can result in higher rankings on search engines which will enable the company to get more leads as well as increase its visibility.

Hence, the company can ask people who visit their website a few questions through an online survey to understand their opinions or gain feedback and hence make appropriate changes to the website to increase satisfaction.

Correlational research

Correlational research is conducted to understand the relationship between two entities and what impact each one of them has on the other. Using mathematical analysis methods, correlational research enables the researcher to correlate two or more variables .

Such research can help understand patterns, relationships, trends, etc. Manipulation of one variable is possible to get the desired results as well. Generally, a conclusion cannot be drawn only on the basis of correlational research.

For example: Research can be conducted to understand the relationship between colors and gender-based audiences. Using such research and identifying the target audience, a company can choose the production of particular color products to be released in the market. This can enable the company to understand the supply and demand requirements of its products.

Causal-Comparative research

Causal-comparative research is a method based on the comparison. It is used to deduce the cause-effect relationship between variables. Sometimes also known as quasi-experimental research, it involves establishing an independent variable and analyzing the effects on the dependent variable.

In such research, data manipulation is not done; however, changes are observed in the variables or groups under the influence of the same changes. Drawing conclusions through such research is a little tricky as independent and dependent variables will always exist in a group. Hence all other parameters have to be taken into consideration before drawing any inferences from the research.

LEARN ABOUT: Causal Research

For example: Research can be conducted to analyze the effect of good educational facilities in rural areas. Such a study can be done to analyze the changes in the group of people from rural areas when they are provided with good educational facilities and before that.

Another example can be to analyze the effect of having dams and how it will affect the farmers or the production of crops in that area.

LEARN ABOUT: Market research trends

Experimental research

Experimental research is based on trying to prove a theory. Such research may be useful in business research as it can let the product company know some behavioral traits of its consumers, which can lead to more revenue. In this method, an experiment is carried out on a set of audiences to observe and later analyze their behavior when impacted by certain parameters.

LEARN ABOUT: Behavioral Targeting

For example: Experimental research was conducted recently to understand if particular colors have an effect on consumers’ hunger. A set of the audience was then exposed to those particular colors while they were eating, and the subjects were observed. It was seen that certain colors like red or yellow increase hunger.

Hence, such research was a boon to the hospitality industry. You can see many food chains like Mcdonalds, KFC, etc., using such colors in their interiors, brands, as well as packaging.

Another example of inferences drawn from experimental research, which is used widely by most bars/pubs across the world, is that loud music in the workplace or anywhere makes a person drink more in less time. This was proven through experimental research and was a key finding for many business owners across the globe.

Online research / Literature research

Literature research is one of the oldest methods available. It is very economical, and a lot of information can be gathered using such research. Online research or literature research involves gathering information from existing documents and studies, which can be available at Libraries, annual reports, etc.

Nowadays, with the advancement in technology, such research has become even more simple and accessible to everyone. An individual can directly research online for any information that is needed, which will give him in-depth information about the topic or the organization.

Such research is used mostly by marketing and salespeople in the business sector to understand the market or their customers. Such research is carried out using existing information that is available from various sources. However, care has to be taken to validate the sources from where the information is going to be collected.

For example , a salesperson has heard a particular firm is looking for some solution that their company provides. Hence, the salesperson will first search for a decision maker from the company, investigate what department he is from, and understand what the target company is looking for and what they are into.

Using this research, he can cater his solution to be spot on when he pitches it to this client. He can also reach out to the customer directly by finding a means to communicate with him by researching online.’

LEARN ABOUT: 12 Best Tools for Researchers

Qualitative research is a method that has a high importance in business research. Qualitative research involves obtaining data through open-ended conversational means of communication. Such research enables the researcher to not only understand what the audience thinks but also why he thinks it.

In such research, in-depth information can be gathered from the subjects depending on their responses. There are various types of qualitative research methods, such as interviews, focus groups, ethnographic research, content analysis, and case study research, that are widely used.

Such methods are of very high importance in business research as they enable the researcher to understand the consumer. What motivates the consumer to buy and what does not is what will lead to higher sales, and that is the prime objective for any business.

Following are a few methods that are widely used in today’s world by most businesses.

Interviews are somewhat similar to surveys, like sometimes they may have the same types of questions used. The difference is that the respondent can answer these open-ended questions at length, and the direction of the conversation or the questions being asked can be changed depending on the response of the subject.

Such a method usually gives the researcher detailed information about the perspective or opinions of its subject. Carrying out interviews with subject matter experts can also give important information critical to some businesses.

For example: An interview was conducted by a telecom manufacturer with a group of women to understand why they have less number of female customers. After interviewing them, the researcher understood that there were fewer feminine colors in some of the models, and females preferred not to purchase them.

Such information can be critical to a business such as a  telecom manufacturer and hence it can be used to increase its market share by targeting women customers by launching some feminine colors in the market.

Another example would be to interview a subject matter expert in social media marketing. Such an interview can enable a researcher to understand why certain types of social media advertising strategies work for a company and why some of them don’t.

LEARN ABOUT: Qualitative Interview

Focus groups

Focus groups are a set of individuals selected specifically to understand their opinions and behaviors. It is usually a small set of a group that is selected keeping in mind the parameters for their target market audience to discuss a particular product or service. Such a method enables a researcher with a larger sample than the interview or a case study while taking advantage of conversational communication.

Focus group is also one of the best examples of qualitative data in education . Nowadays, focus groups can be sent online surveys as well to collect data and answer why, what, and how questions. Such a method is very crucial to test new concepts or products before they are launched in the market.

For example: Research is conducted with a focus group to understand what dimension of screen size is preferred most by the current target market. Such a method can enable a researcher to dig deeper if the target market focuses more on the screen size, features, or colors of the phone. Using this data, a company can make wise decisions about its product line and secure a higher market share.

Ethnographic research

Ethnographic research is one of the most challenging research but can give extremely precise results. Such research is used quite rarely, as it is time-consuming and can be expensive as well. It involves the researcher adapting to the natural environment and observing its target audience to collect data. Such a method is generally used to understand cultures, challenges, or other things that can occur in that particular setting.

For example: The world-renowned show “Undercover Boss” would be an apt example of how ethnographic research can be used in businesses. In this show, the senior management of a large organization works in his own company as a regular employee to understand what improvements can be made, what is the culture in the organization, and to identify hard-working employees and reward them.

It can be seen that the researcher had to spend a good amount of time in the natural setting of the employees and adapt to their ways and processes. While observing in this setting, the researcher could find out the information he needed firsthand without losing any information or any bias and improve certain things that would impact his business.

Case study research

Case study research is one of the most important in business research. It is also used as marketing collateral by most businesses to land up more clients. Case study research is conducted to assess customer satisfaction and document the challenges that were faced and the solutions that the firm gave them.

These inferences are made to point out the benefits that the customer enjoyed for choosing their specific firm. Such research is widely used in other fields like education, social sciences, and similar. Case studies are provided by businesses to new clients to showcase their capabilities, and hence such research plays a crucial role in the business sector.

For example: A services company has provided a testing solution to one of its clients. A case study research is conducted to find out what were the challenges faced during the project, what was the scope of their work, what objective was to be achieved, and what solutions were given to tackle the challenges.

The study can end with the benefits that the company provided through its solutions, like reduced time to test batches, easy implementation or integration of the system, or even cost reduction. Such a study showcases the capability of the company, and hence it can be stated as empirical evidence of the new prospect.

Website visitor profiling/research

Website intercept surveys or website visitor profiling/research is something new that has come up and is quite helpful in the business sector. It is an innovative approach to collect direct feedback from your website visitors using surveys. In recent times a lot of business generation happens online, and hence it is important to understand the visitors of your website as they are your potential customers.

Collecting feedback is critical to any business, as without understanding a customer, no business can be successful. A company has to keep its customers satisfied and try to make them loyal customers in order to stay on top.

A website intercept survey is an online survey that allows you to target visitors to understand their intent and collect feedback to evaluate the customers’ online experience. Information like visitor intention, behavior path, and satisfaction with the overall website can be collected using this.

Depending on what information a company is looking for, multiple forms of website intercept surveys can be used to gather responses. Some of the popular ones are Pop-ups, also called Modal boxes, and on-page surveys.

For example: A prospective customer is looking for a particular product that a company is selling. Once he is directed to the website, an intercept survey will start noting his intent and path. Once the transaction has been made, a pop-up or an on-page survey is provided to the customer to rate the website.

Such research enables the researcher to put this data to good use and hence understand the customers’ intent and path and improve any parts of the website depending on the responses, which in turn would lead to satisfied customers and hence, higher revenues and market share.

How to Write a Research Proposal: (with Examples & Templates)

how to write a research proposal

Table of Contents

Before conducting a study, a research proposal should be created that outlines researchers’ plans and methodology and is submitted to the concerned evaluating organization or person. Creating a research proposal is an important step to ensure that researchers are on track and are moving forward as intended. A research proposal can be defined as a detailed plan or blueprint for the proposed research that you intend to undertake. It provides readers with a snapshot of your project by describing what you will investigate, why it is needed, and how you will conduct the research.

Your research proposal should aim to explain to the readers why your research is relevant and original, that you understand the context and current scenario in the field, have the appropriate resources to conduct the research, and that the research is feasible given the usual constraints.

This article will describe in detail the purpose and typical structure of a research proposal , along with examples and templates to help you ace this step in your research journey.

What is a Research Proposal ?

A research proposal¹ ,²  can be defined as a formal report that describes your proposed research, its objectives, methodology, implications, and other important details. Research proposals are the framework of your research and are used to obtain approvals or grants to conduct the study from various committees or organizations. Consequently, research proposals should convince readers of your study’s credibility, accuracy, achievability, practicality, and reproducibility.

With research proposals , researchers usually aim to persuade the readers, funding agencies, educational institutions, and supervisors to approve the proposal. To achieve this, the report should be well structured with the objectives written in clear, understandable language devoid of jargon. A well-organized research proposal conveys to the readers or evaluators that the writer has thought out the research plan meticulously and has the resources to ensure timely completion.

Purpose of Research Proposals

A research proposal is a sales pitch and therefore should be detailed enough to convince your readers, who could be supervisors, ethics committees, universities, etc., that what you’re proposing has merit and is feasible . Research proposals can help students discuss their dissertation with their faculty or fulfill course requirements and also help researchers obtain funding. A well-structured proposal instills confidence among readers about your ability to conduct and complete the study as proposed.

Research proposals can be written for several reasons:³

  • To describe the importance of research in the specific topic
  • Address any potential challenges you may encounter
  • Showcase knowledge in the field and your ability to conduct a study
  • Apply for a role at a research institute
  • Convince a research supervisor or university that your research can satisfy the requirements of a degree program
  • Highlight the importance of your research to organizations that may sponsor your project
  • Identify implications of your project and how it can benefit the audience

What Goes in a Research Proposal?

Research proposals should aim to answer the three basic questions—what, why, and how.

The What question should be answered by describing the specific subject being researched. It should typically include the objectives, the cohort details, and the location or setting.

The Why question should be answered by describing the existing scenario of the subject, listing unanswered questions, identifying gaps in the existing research, and describing how your study can address these gaps, along with the implications and significance.

The How question should be answered by describing the proposed research methodology, data analysis tools expected to be used, and other details to describe your proposed methodology.

Research Proposal Example

Here is a research proposal sample template (with examples) from the University of Rochester Medical Center. 4 The sections in all research proposals are essentially the same although different terminology and other specific sections may be used depending on the subject.

Research Proposal Template

Structure of a Research Proposal

If you want to know how to make a research proposal impactful, include the following components:¹

1. Introduction

This section provides a background of the study, including the research topic, what is already known about it and the gaps, and the significance of the proposed research.

2. Literature review

This section contains descriptions of all the previous relevant studies pertaining to the research topic. Every study cited should be described in a few sentences, starting with the general studies to the more specific ones. This section builds on the understanding gained by readers in the Introduction section and supports it by citing relevant prior literature, indicating to readers that you have thoroughly researched your subject.

3. Objectives

Once the background and gaps in the research topic have been established, authors must now state the aims of the research clearly. Hypotheses should be mentioned here. This section further helps readers understand what your study’s specific goals are.

4. Research design and methodology

Here, authors should clearly describe the methods they intend to use to achieve their proposed objectives. Important components of this section include the population and sample size, data collection and analysis methods and duration, statistical analysis software, measures to avoid bias (randomization, blinding), etc.

5. Ethical considerations

This refers to the protection of participants’ rights, such as the right to privacy, right to confidentiality, etc. Researchers need to obtain informed consent and institutional review approval by the required authorities and mention this clearly for transparency.

6. Budget/funding

Researchers should prepare their budget and include all expected expenditures. An additional allowance for contingencies such as delays should also be factored in.

7. Appendices

This section typically includes information that supports the research proposal and may include informed consent forms, questionnaires, participant information, measurement tools, etc.

8. Citations

Important Tips for Writing a Research Proposal

Writing a research proposal begins much before the actual task of writing. Planning the research proposal structure and content is an important stage, which if done efficiently, can help you seamlessly transition into the writing stage. 3,5

The Planning Stage

  • Manage your time efficiently. Plan to have the draft version ready at least two weeks before your deadline and the final version at least two to three days before the deadline.
  • What is the primary objective of your research?
  • Will your research address any existing gap?
  • What is the impact of your proposed research?
  • Do people outside your field find your research applicable in other areas?
  • If your research is unsuccessful, would there still be other useful research outcomes?

  The Writing Stage

  • Create an outline with main section headings that are typically used.
  • Focus only on writing and getting your points across without worrying about the format of the research proposal , grammar, punctuation, etc. These can be fixed during the subsequent passes. Add details to each section heading you created in the beginning.
  • Ensure your sentences are concise and use plain language. A research proposal usually contains about 2,000 to 4,000 words or four to seven pages.
  • Don’t use too many technical terms and abbreviations assuming that the readers would know them. Define the abbreviations and technical terms.
  • Ensure that the entire content is readable. Avoid using long paragraphs because they affect the continuity in reading. Break them into shorter paragraphs and introduce some white space for readability.
  • Focus on only the major research issues and cite sources accordingly. Don’t include generic information or their sources in the literature review.
  • Proofread your final document to ensure there are no grammatical errors so readers can enjoy a seamless, uninterrupted read.
  • Use academic, scholarly language because it brings formality into a document.
  • Ensure that your title is created using the keywords in the document and is neither too long and specific nor too short and general.
  • Cite all sources appropriately to avoid plagiarism.
  • Make sure that you follow guidelines, if provided. This includes rules as simple as using a specific font or a hyphen or en dash between numerical ranges.
  • Ensure that you’ve answered all questions requested by the evaluating authority.

Key Takeaways

Here’s a summary of the main points about research proposals discussed in the previous sections:

  • A research proposal is a document that outlines the details of a proposed study and is created by researchers to submit to evaluators who could be research institutions, universities, faculty, etc.
  • Research proposals are usually about 2,000-4,000 words long, but this depends on the evaluating authority’s guidelines.
  • A good research proposal ensures that you’ve done your background research and assessed the feasibility of the research.
  • Research proposals have the following main sections—introduction, literature review, objectives, methodology, ethical considerations, and budget.

The research question is one of the most important parts of your research paper , thesis or dissertation . It’s important to spend some time assessing and refining your question before you get started.

The exact form of your question will depend on a few things, such as the length of your project, the type of research you’re conducting, the topic , and the research problem . However, all research questions should be focused, specific, and relevant to a timely social or scholarly issue.

Once you’ve read our guide on how to write a research question , you can use these examples to craft your own.

Research question Explanation
The first question is not enough. The second question is more , using .
Starting with “why” often means that your question is not enough: there are too many possible answers. By targeting just one aspect of the problem, the second question offers a clear path for research.
The first question is too broad and subjective: there’s no clear criteria for what counts as “better.” The second question is much more . It uses clearly defined terms and narrows its focus to a specific population.
It is generally not for academic research to answer broad normative questions. The second question is more specific, aiming to gain an understanding of possible solutions in order to make informed recommendations.
The first question is too simple: it can be answered with a simple yes or no. The second question is , requiring in-depth investigation and the development of an original argument.
The first question is too broad and not very . The second question identifies an underexplored aspect of the topic that requires investigation of various  to answer.
The first question is not enough: it tries to address two different (the quality of sexual health services and LGBT support services). Even though the two issues are related, it’s not clear how the research will bring them together. The second integrates the two problems into one focused, specific question.
The first question is too simple, asking for a straightforward fact that can be easily found online. The second is a more question that requires and detailed discussion to answer.
? dealt with the theme of racism through casting, staging, and allusion to contemporary events? The first question is not  — it would be very difficult to contribute anything new. The second question takes a specific angle to make an original argument, and has more relevance to current social concerns and debates.
The first question asks for a ready-made solution, and is not . The second question is a clearer comparative question, but note that it may not be practically . For a smaller research project or thesis, it could be narrowed down further to focus on the effectiveness of drunk driving laws in just one or two countries.

Note that the design of your research question can depend on what method you are pursuing. Here are a few options for qualitative, quantitative, and statistical research questions.

Type of research Example question
