What Makes a Good Cover Letter?

What should a cover letter look like.

Penny Loretto is the Associate Director in the Career Development Center at a Skidmore College, a small liberal arts college. She has her own career counseling practice, Career Choice, where she works with adults in career transition. She conducts career planning workshops including researching career options, job search strategies, and resume development.

A cover letter is frequently required, and recommended, along with your job application. It expresses your interest in the role, sums up your qualifications, and attempts to show how you are different than the other candidates.

A good internship cover letter doesn't tell an employer what you want from a job; it tells them how you will help them. It demonstrates the strengths and benefits you will bring to the position and how your past experience will make it a quick transition.

Each cover letter you submit should be customized for the particular job description. Particularly when applying for a job in government, an individualized cover letter is essential. Government human resources departments frequently use computer programs to scan cover letters, and using keywords from the specific job description can help your application be recognized.

A cover letter for a government position would look like the below sample. Download the cover letter template (compatible with Google Docs and Word Online) or see below for more examples.

Willard Lee Director New York Civil Liberties Union 123 Business Rd. Business City, NY 54321

Dear Mr. Lee:

I would like to express my enthusiasm in applying for the position as a legislative intern at the New York Civil Liberties Union recently posted in The New York Times. As a prospective May 2018 graduate from Boston College with considerable writing and administrative experience, and a strong interest in law, public policy, and immigrant rights, I believe I am a strong candidate for the legislative intern position.

The job description states that you are looking for a candidate with a commitment to civil liberties, who has strong communication and interpersonal skills, excellent writing skills, organizational skills, and someone who is very detail oriented. As a government major currently involved in writing a thesis on immigration law and as someone who contributes regularly to several blogs focused on government and immigration issues, I have become a proficient and skilled writer. As a current intern and assistant to Tom Jones, Legislative Assistant for Attorney Bill Phillips, in New Brunswick, NY, I have further enhanced my quantitative and qualitative research, editing, writing, and administrative skills.

As a government major, I have spent the past four years of my academic career focusing on U.S. immigration politics and immigrant rights. I have taken courses in American Politics, Immigration Law I and II, Dissident Political Thought, Politics of Congress in addition to conducting several research projects in collaboration with Professor Jack Barnes at Boston College. I have excelled in my academics and previous internships and jobs and feel that I would be an asset if I were selected to intern for the New York Civil Liberties Union.

I will call within a week to discuss my candidacy and see if we might arrange for mutually convenient time in which we can speak. Thank you for your time and consideration, and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

How to get a faculty recommendation letter?

For certain internships, they might ask for you to provide at least 2 faculty recommendation letters ( these are very common when applying to CUNY-based internships ). Here are some tips to gain those letters or references. When finding a professor to ask, think about a professor that has gotten to know you and the work that you produce. This is why it is always important to participate in a specific class and do well in the class to be remembered by professors. Remember to have in mind more than the expected number of professor recommendations just in case a professor declines your request or one does not get back to you in the allotted time.

Once you have found the professor you are going to email, remember to keep in mind:

  • Create a direct subject line
  • Remind them who you are
  • Make sure to greet them in the email
  • Keep in mind the tone that you’re using
  • Be specific about the internship/ job that you’re applying to
  • Keep it short but concise
  • Give them a deadline & make sure to follow up before it
  • Remember to thank them

Cover Letter For Congressional Internship (with Tips)

Do you have dreams of becoming a politician, lobbyist, policymaker, campaign manager, or a valued member of a politician’s team? If so, you could benefit from spending a session or two as a congressional intern. These highly-coveted positions are pursued by pre-law, political science, journalism, and other students who have an interest in the political process.

Congressional internships are generally available during the spring and fall semesters. Most last three to four months. You can check for new calls on the US Senate web page or with the House of Representatives. Some internship aggregation websites also track new openings.

As you might imagine, competition for congression internships is very intense. Overall, you need to have a minimal GPA score of 3.0; demonstrate strong analytics and leadership skills, as well as a commitment to public-service-oriented activities.

All of these bits should be clearly visible across your application package, and even more so in your cover letter for the congressional internship. We are here to help you sort out the latter.

Cover Letter Example For Congressional Internship – Text Format

Dear Marcus Victor,

My name is Brenda Ninja and I am writing this letter to request consideration for a spring 2023 internship with Senator Paula Stone. I learned that Senator Stone was accepting interns through the United States Senate website. Upon reviewing the eligibility requirements, I have determined that I am qualified to pursue this position. Additionally, I have obtained all of the necessary documentation, which is attached to this letter.

I am currently a student at Duke University, pursuing a Masters in Public Policy. My thesis is on “Gender, Race, and Identity Advocacy in 21st Century Politics” . I was motivated to work with Senator Stone knowing that she has authored legislation on gender rights and that she sits on several committees that I believe are important to moving these issues forward.

In addition to my studies and research work, I have also a strong track record of extra-curriculum activities, relevant to the position I’m pursuing:

  • Completing a four-month externship with the ACLU working on free-speech advocacy
  • Earning a gender studies certificate along with my BA in Public Policy
  • Working with local attorneys to establish a civil rights hotline for students

Finally, I have taught two lower-division courses in public policy and political science.

As my letters of recommendation state, I am highly motivated, detail-oriented, and hard-working. I pride myself on my communications skills, and my willingness to do the ‘grunt work’ of advocacy.

Thank you for considering my application. I would be honored to be able to pursue this opportunity and look forward to hearing from you.

Respectfully,

Brenda Ninja

How to Write a Cover Letter for Congressional Internship

Most congressional internships assume work with specific House representatives or senators. Before sitting down to write the letter, your goal is to research the person’s background. In particular, take note of:

  • Bills, legislators, and propositions recently made
  • Key committees the person sits on
  • Main issues they stand for in their daily work

Remember: you should always have some values and ideals in common with the elected politician.

Once you have these details, open a new document and start composing your letter. Our tips will help you shape it up in the best way possible!

Showcase Your Capabilities

Use your cover letter to show how you are qualified for the challenges you will face as an intern. Include examples from your work experience, research, writing, and volunteer work. You are probably competing with several other students, and you need to stand out. Don’t hesitate to include some unrelated experience if it helped you to develop positive traits. For example, all interns should have great time management skills and self-discipline.

Likewise, as Dyan Urias, a former House of Congress intern noted :

“Administrative tasks are a fundamental part of your job. A big part of your responsibilities may be answering the phone and mail on a daily basis, sorting department letters, and running errands between offices.”

In your cover letter, show that you understand the importance of such chores and are ready to perform them with utmost professionalism.

Understand The Purpose of your Cover Letter

The cover letter you write isn’t just a formality. It has to win over the internship coordinator. Few senators read through all the incoming applications. They are mostly presented with top contenders. So you must impress the “gatekeeper” first.

Your letter should also show your enthusiasm, experience, and qualifications. Whatever you do, don’t rush through this. If you decide to apply for more than one internship, write a personalized letter for each one.

Keep Things Very Formal

Your internship cover letter should be formatted as a business letter. Use academic or professional language. Take the time to learn the names and preferred pronouns of every person you mention or address.

Use a font that is very business appropriate such as Times New Roman or Arial. If you decide to use a template for your cover letter , it should be professional without any embellishments. For printed letters, choose the highest quality stationery you can afford, or have the documents printed by a professional.

Final Tip: Be Consistent

Keep your resume and any other documentation you have handy while you write your resume. This will help you to maintain consistent keywords, and be sure you get any dates and names correct from one document to the next.

Dear Ms. Chan,

I am writing to express my interest in CNN’s editorial internship as part of the Columbia Experience Overseas Hong Kong. With a keen interest in media production and journalism, I am eager to explore these fields in one of the world’s fastest-growing markets. As a rising sophomore at Columbia University studying psychology with a concentration in sustainable development, I am excited to apply my cultural awareness and critical thinking skills, as well as my creativity and teamwork skills to this position.

For the past year, I have worked with the Columbia Video Network to record classes for the developing online sector of Columbia University School of Engineering. My colleagues and I produced content that students around the world can access for their online programs. Additionally, I played a vital role managing our social media presence via Facebook and Twitter, increasing the network’s online exposure by sharing photos from our production room, writing posts about advancements in technology, and sharing engineering-related content. Through this experience, I familiarized myself with media outlets and increased engagement with prospective students.

Currently, as Division I student-athlete, I continuously develop my perseverance, mental stamina and time management skills. I have learned to master the art of balancing a demanding schedule while navigating a fast-paced environment. My experience as an athlete has also helped me to become an effective leader and communicator, acting as a liaison between my teammates and coaching staff. All are skills I expect to use at CNN.

I am excited by the opportunity to contribute to one of the world’s leading news organizations while exploring my curiosity in the use of technology as a tool to transmit knowledge through visual media. I look forward to the opportunity to learn how CNN integrates these tools within the news landscape, and to grow as a journalist and creative thinker. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely, Layla D’Antonio

Dear Hiring Team,

Growing up with a political historian as my father, I learned a crucial lesson: to care about people, you have to care about politics. In this vein, I have long admired the Center for Democratic Progress, using your reports and articles to help define my own policy positions. As I prepare to graduate from Columbia University with a degree in American studies and creative writing in May, I want to work for an organization that lets me act on my care for people every day. With seven years of editorial experience, I think I could do great work as Democratic Progress’ Assistant Editor.

I first honed my editing skills as a journalist. Working for Elementary, I wrote and copy edited dozens of articles using AP Style – everything from long-form investigations of standardized testing to columns about Common Core. I posted and formatted articles and photos on Elementary’s WordPress site, and managed production of the magazine’s quarterly print issues. For this work, I wrote headlines, blurbs, and photo captions as needed, and used Adobe Photoshop and InDesign regularly. I have done similar work as a writer for the Daily Noise, a workshop participant at Columbia, and the sole editor of The Soul in Our Soles, a full-length book. Through these experiences, I have edited hundreds of pages, adjusted to new style guides and expectations, and learned how to give my feedback clearly and diplomatically. So, too, have I honed my attention to detail and accuracy, learned how to work independently and under time pressure, and kept track of small-moving parts across several projects at once.

In other jobs, I have channeled my political views into meaningful work. As an intern for the League Against Hate Speech and Detroit for All, a nonprofit which helps immigrants and refugees in Southeast Michigan, I worked with teams to advocate progressive policy positions by planning trips, conferences, and community-wide events. As part of this work, I communicated with a wide range of individuals – wealthy businessmen, Bhutanese refugees, and Israeli activists alike – and sharpened my written and verbal communications skills. I also gave my colleagues operational support, copying and filing papers, scheduling meetings, and inputting data into Salesforce, among other tasks. These experiences taught me when to ask for help, how to solve problems, and how to organize my work and others’ well. At the same time, I learned firsthand how satisfying it is to work hard for a cause you believe in.

Given the opportunity, I would love to do that work for Democratic Progress as your Assistant Editor. I would be able to relocate to Washington, D.C. quickly upon hiring. Thank you so much for your time and consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely, Sara Danson

Vince Winchester Thornton Tomasetti 51 Madison Ave #19 New York, NY 10010

Dear Mr. Winchester,

I am writing to express my interest in the Energy Analyst internship at Thornton Tomasetti. After connecting with Recruitment manager Charlotte Greene at Columbia University’s Sustainability Career Fair, and learning about the company’s impact in the sustainable engineering space, I knew I needed to apply. I am a senior at Columbia majoring in Mechanical Engineering and believe that my critical thinking and interpersonal skills along with my commitment to engaging in complex engineering problems would be an asset to your team.

During my internship with ERS, I successfully employed my critical thinking skills and interpersonal skills to pinpoint cost-effective retrofit measures on a very limited budget and with little manpower. While working on heat load models, I realized that improving the insulation of a building could result in greater savings than the team’s HVAC focus. With approval from my boss, I was able to take initiative to create a new framework for implementing insulation and envelope repairs. Using this idea, the team discovered that one of the school sites could save over $30,000 a year on electricity through insulation upgrades.

Currently, I am leading a project for the Columbia Formula SAE team researching and analyzing sensors with a goal to wire a car to increase speed and validate load predictions. This project is particularly relevant to the current trends in the energy efficiency space, as sensors exist in buildings and retrofit projects need to be validated. My current coursework complements my experience in its focus on statistical programming for modeling environmental issues. For example, I am working on a project using machine learning to predict roofs in New York City that need insulation.

I am excited by the opportunity to be on a team that collaborates to help clients meet their engineering and sustainability goals, and where I can showcase my mechanical engineering skills. Thank you for considering me to join the Thornton Tomasetti team.

Sincerely, Devon Fisher

Dear Ms. Kramer,

I am writing to apply to your grant writer position. When I saw this posting on your website, I was immediately drawn to AIDG’s focus on business incubation and eco-friendly technologies, and believe your model offers many opportunities to create lasting improvements to infrastructures in Guatemala and Haiti. To help your company gain further funding for its mission, I offer proven writing, research, and communication skills as well as successful grant writing experience.

I was inspired to transition from magazine writing to grant writing when I started editing documents for the Refugee and Immigrant Fund (RIF), a not-for-profit agency that aids new immigrants as they adjust to life in the United States. Working with RIF’s founder to create two grant applications, I found my editorial background equipped me well for the challenges of drafting and editing proposals to secure not-for-profit funding. Both applications were successful and resulted in grants needed to support two new programs.

Additionally, as the Assistant Research Editor at Budget Travel magazine, I pinpoint the most engaging details of a subject and write stories that appeal to a targeted audience. These skills have helped me create grant applications that draw attention from an audience of grant givers and personal donors.

Finally, every day at Budget Travel, I communicate effectively across language barriers. Maintaining my record of zero printed errors, I routinely call and email small foreign businesses, from family-owned restaurants in Panama to three-room B&Bs in Italy. My French language proficiency, further refined when I studied in Senegal, will help me work closely with your staff in Haiti. Moreover, I am currently enrolled in introductory Spanish lessons and plan to continue classes in Guatemala.

I would be honored to join AIDG and help promote sustainable technologies, XelaTeco, and other business incubation plans. I look forward to discussing how I can help your organization grow and expand through fundraising. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely, Amy Robins

Bain & Company 415 Mission Street, Suite 4800 San Francisco, California 94105

Dear Ms. Victoria Andres,

I am writing to apply for the Associate Consultant position at Bain & Company’s San Francisco and New York offices. I am currently a senior at Columbia University pursuing a major in Philosophy with a minor in Economics. Throughout the past year, I have had the pleasure of talking to ACs in the San Francisco, Chicago, and Shanghai offices about their experiences at Bain. Most recently, I spoke with Cheryl Bloom, an AC at the SF Office and my ACI interview buddy last year. She emphasized the great learning environment and active mentorships available at Bain, which I find very exciting!

This past summer, I worked at Kaiser Associates , a Washington D.C.-based international strategy and management consulting firm serving Fortune 500 companies. I believe my consulting experiences, leadership successes, and academic achievement will make me a valuable asset to Bain.

As an Associate Consultant, I will contribute the following skills:

Analytical problem-solving. At Kaiser Associates, I analyzed prices of construction machine warranties for a Fortune 100 industrial equipment manufacturer in order to increase its warranty sales through price adjustments. Using regressions in Excel, I evaluated the impact of different types of coverages on warranty prices at competing manufacturers. As a result, I was able to provide quantitative data to help the project team develop final recommendations, which were well-received by our client at the end of the project.

Strong interpersonal and client-facing skills. At Asia Society last summer, I presented a sponsorship proposal to senior managers of All Nippon Airways (ANA) and the Peninsula Hotel regarding an upcoming Japanese cultural banquet. By thoroughly researching the two companies’ preferences to devise sponsorship tiers and benefits, I successfully convinced both to sponsor the event by offering 75% discounted air tickets and accommodation, saving Asia Society $6,000 in the budget.

Leadership and influence. As one of three recipients of the Symposium Fellowship (a Columbia-sponsored liberal arts teaching fellowship), I designed and taught a 10-day seminar on Dostoevsky and Rousseau in Beijing, China. With 15 high school and college students, whose areas of study ranged from engineering to fine arts, I facilitated in-depth discussions about philosophical texts as well as contemporary social issues and engaged every student in seminar-style learning regardless of their English language skills and points of view. Based on feedback from a course evaluation survey designed by myself, all 15 students were beyond satisfied with the seminar and began to take an interest in philosophy.

With my strong academic achievements and multicultural, multilingual background, I am confident that I would be a great addition to Bain and make tangible contributions to the team. I look forward to discussing my candidacy for this position at your convenience. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely, Elizabeth Lee

Create Your Own Internship

Even if a company or organization does not have an internship program or has never had an intern, it may be possible to convince them to create an internship for you.

Here are some tips to get started on your “create your own internship” cover letter:

In your cover letter, acknowledge that while there is no internship program in their company or organization, you are proposing that they create an internship for you based on the skills you offer and the value you could add in return for real work experience and training.

Explain the type of work that you would like to do. Remember to be realistic about what type of work an intern typically does in this field. It may be helpful to research internship postings at similar organizations for reference.

Demonstrate your knowledge about and interest in the company. Be enthusiastic and convincing as to why you want to work for them.

Use social media or the company’s “About Us” web pages to identify an actual person in the department that interests you and direct your cover letter and resume to that person.

Follow up in a few days with another email or a phone call.

A sample letter of interest for an internship is a personal letter used to express your interest in securing an internship opportunity with a company, showcasing your qualifications, skills, and enthusiasm. A well-written and targeted letter increases your chances of obtaining an internship and advancing your career.

A letter of interest serves as an effective communication tool to demonstrate your desire to take on an internship and highlight your suitability for the role. It provides a personalized introduction to a potential employer, allowing you to showcase your skills, experience, and passion for the field.

In this guide, we will provide essential tips and strategies to help you craft a compelling letter of interest that captures the recruiter’s attention and increases your chances of securing the internship.

What Is a Letter of Interest for an Internship?

A sample letter of interest for an internship is a formal document that expresses your enthusiasm and qualifications for a specific internship opportunity. It serves as a personal introduction, allowing you to showcase your skills, experiences, and alignment with the organization's goals.

Unlike a traditional resume, a CV for an internship with no experience provides a narrative context, highlighting how your skills, academic background, and personal attributes are directly relevant to the specific role you're pursuing. In essence, it is a personalized letter—a way to introduce yourself to a potential employer and demonstrate your passion for the internship, even without prior work experience.

  • Body Paragraphs: Mention specific relevant skills, experiences, and qualifications that would fit you as a perfect candidate for the internship. Use very specific examples to illustrate your abilities better and link the requirements of the position to them.
  • Closing: Express your eagerness to take up the opportunity. Again, mention how you wish to be a part of the organization. Thank the recipient for the time and attention.

Developing Strong Writing Skills

  • Clarity and Concise: All communications will be clear and concise. No technical jargon; use simple sentences.
  • Professional Tone: The sample letter of interest internship will be professional in language. Laid-back words and slang
  • Active voice: Use active voice wherever you can make your writing more energetic and effective.
  • Editing: Edit your letter thoroughly for grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes.

Developing strong writing skills is essential for creating effective job applications; utilizing resume writing tips can help you learn how to present your qualifications clearly and persuasively, setting you apart from other candidates.

Researching the Internship

  • Research work: Research on the organization and the specific internship you are applying for.
  • Emphasize relevant skills: Identify those skills and experiences that match the job and emphasize them in your letter.
  • Connecting the Dots: Clearly express how your qualifications match internship and organizational objectives.

Crafting a Powerful Letter of Interest for an Internship

A well-written letter of interest has a high chance of converting into an internship. Here are some must-remember tips.

1. Customize Your Letter to the Specific Internship:

  • Good Research: Put aside time to research the organization and the specific internship for which you are applying. Understand its mission, values, recent projects, and the key responsibilities of the role .
  • Identify Relevant Skills : Outline skills and experiences closely relevant to the internship opportunity. Be specific and vivid with concrete examples illustrating your experience.
  • Connect the Dots: Clearly showcase that your qualifications are a strong fit for the role and can contribute to the goals and objectives of the organization.

2. Be Short and Clear:

  • Make It Brief: Write a sample letter of interest internship no longer than one page. Any letter over that length is unlikely to be read and even less likely to be remembered.
  • Use Powerful Language: Avoid jargon and use straightforward language that is as clear as the sun.
  • Highlight Strengths: Point out the best of your skills and experience . Do not mention information irrelevant to the position you applied for.

3. Showcase the Talent

  • Examples: Be specific about the skills and accomplishments you are bringing to a job. Rather than saying, "I am a team player," end with something like, "I was part of a brainstorming team that suggested ideas to improve sales in our company."
  • Measure Your Achievements: Quantify your accomplishments when it makes sense, which will allow you to show the impact you made. Instead of stating you increased sales, for example, you could say, "Increased sales by 20%.

4. Express Genuine Interest:

  • Enthusiasm: Show to express your real enthusiasm for the organization and the internship in your sample letter of interest internship. Let them know that you are excited about working on the area and learning from it.
  • Personal Connection: Explain why the internship aligns with your career goals and aspirations. You should tell them why you are interested in working with the particular organization.

5. Proofread Carefully:

  • Grammatical Attention: our letter should not contain grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors. A well-written, error-free letter is very impressive and complements an eye-catching resume , helping you make a strong impression on potential employers.
  • Inquire Others: Ask some other person to go through your letter for mistakes that you might have neglected. A new person is capable of showing you problems that need correction within your letter.

6. Tailor Your Closing

  • Call to Action: Request for an interview or follow-up. In your cover letter closing , show them that you are interested in knowing more about the internship and how your qualifications will be helpful to the organization.
  • Thank the Recipient: Thank them through your sample letter of interest internship for taking the time and consideration. Close politely and courteously.

7. Follow Up:

  • After Submission: If a reasonable time has passed and you still haven't heard anything, it is perfectly fine to send a polite follow-up email. This shows that you really have an interest in the internship and can keep your application at the top of their minds.

These are the tips to guide you through writing a persuasive letter of interest, which is capable of showing you off all your strengths and qualifications for acceptance. Incorporating effective resume writing tips for freshers can further enhance your application.
