For the first time in his film career, Natural Star Nani has played an out-and-out mass role in Dasara. The debut directorial film of Srikanth Odela hit the screens worldwide today amid exceptional hype. Let’s see how Nani’s first pan-Indian film has turned out.
Dasara is set in the village of Veerlapalle in Godhavarikhani. Dharani (Nani), his friend Soori (Dheekshith Shetty) and others are addicted to alcohol. Vennela (Keerthy Suresh) is their common friend since childhood. Chinna Nambi (Shine Tom Chacko), son of Shivanna (Samuthirakani) is elected as the Sarpanch and he looks after the Silk Bar. Rajanna (Sai Kumar) helps Soori and his friends in a case and they elect him as their Sarpanch. After this, someone kills Soori on the night of his wedding with Vennela. Who killed Soori? What’s the future of Vennela? What did Dharani do then? All the questions are answered in the film.
Plus Points:
All these years, Nani entertained audiences with boy-next-door roles and for the first time, he challenges himself by accepting to play Dharani in Dasara. His performance is exemplary in the film. From attire to body language to dialogues, Nani takes utmost care and excels in the role of Dharani. The way he performed in the emotional scenes is outstanding.
National Award-winning actress Keerthy Suresh gets a meaty role. Her performance as Vennela is flawless and after Mahanati, this is the best film she signed in Tollywood. Her performance and dialogues are quite natural.
Dheekshith Shetty is no lesser than the other two leads. His performance is quite natural and after this film, he will surely get many good roles in the Telugu film industry.
Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko gets a good role and he justifies it with his impressive performance. Sai Kumar, Samuthirakani, Purnaa and others are okay in their roles.
Director Srikanth Odela makes a nice debut with Dasara. He is more excellent as a director than a writer. He will definitely get some crazy offers from renowned banners in the days to come. The director shows his outstanding skills on the big screen.
The action sequences and dialogues are terrific, thanks to the men behind them. Nani’s rugged look and his performance in the action sequences are praiseworthy. The interval and the climax are worth watching.
Minus Points:
As mentioned above, Srikanth Odela is good as a director but as a writer, he fails to choose a compelling story. He runs the screenplay well in the first half but when it comes to the second half, the screenplay is very slow and gives one boredom.
Also, there is nothing much to enthral audiences except for the climax. The story is highly predictable in the second half. This is a big letdown in the movie. However, Nani pulls it off with his performance. If the second half is as engaging as the first half, Dasara would have become a terrific film.
From start to end, the movie runs on a serious note and there is no space for creating humour. Director Srikanth Odela should have injected some funny scenes between the friends in the first half.
The placement of the popular track Chamkeela Angeelesi is a big disappointment. Some of the dialogues are inaudible.
Technical Aspects:
Srikanth Odela comes up with a mediocre story that has commercial elements to entertain mass audiences only. Music director Santhosh Narayanan gives the best music that uplifts many scenes in the film. Sathyan Sooryan is terrific in his work. His camerawork, especially during the night scenes, looks quite rich. Editing should have been better and the editor Naveen Nooli should have trimmed many scenes in the second half to make Dasara an engaging fare. Production values are top-notch. The makeup artists need a pat on their backs for their amazing work.
On the whole, Dasara is a gritty action drama that has Nani’s outstanding performance. He shouldered the film all the way. Keerthy Suresh, Dheekshith Shetty and Shine Tom Chacko also performed well. The film is quite good technically. Barring a few laggy portions in the second half, the film is a perfect choice to enjoy the weekend.

‘Dasara’ movie review: Nani, Keerthy Suresh lead this gritty, emotional ride
Srikanth odela makes an assured directorial debut with the telugu film ‘dasara’, exploring caste politics in a mainstream format, backed by good performances from the cast led by nani and keerthy suresh.

Dasara, written and directed by first-timer Srikanth Odela, ventures into a space that mainstream Telugu films do not often dare to. It tries to be a ‘massy’ Telugu film that explores the ugly caste politics in a semi-fictional story set in the coal-laden hamlet Veerlapally, Telangana, with earnestness, and achieves this balance reasonably well. One of Dasara’s highlights is a chilling pre-intermission episode. The three central characters — Dharani (Nani), Vennela (Keerthy Suresh) and Suri (Deekshit Shetty) — are integral to the happenings. There is no scope for the display of machismo or bravado. The fear-inducing episode made me wonder, briefly, if this was the real incident based on which Srikanth had written this semi-fictional story.
First, to address the elephant in the room, Dasara is not a wannabe Pushpa or KGF . Rather, it tries to bring in the grittiness of Tamil films such as Jai Bhim, Asuran and Karnan , in its depiction of power equations. Dasara is also in a zone similar to Rangasthalam , one of the few significant ‘massy’ Telugu films that explored caste dynamics in recent years.
It takes a while to warm up to the world of Dasara , where alcohol excess is a way of life, a way of escaping the travesty of the daily grind. For the men in the village, life revolves around the only bar named ‘Silk bar’. Srikanth tips his hat to the sultry Silk Smitha.
The bar is where the rules of power become evident. The upper caste men drink inside the bar while the others stay outside. A backstory of the conflicts within a powerful family, involving the characters played by Saikumar and Samuthirakani and later Shine Tom Chacko, forms the undercurrent for the power dynamics in the village. Srikanth places the three childhood friends Dharani, Suri and Vennela in this milieu. Their names aligning with the earth, sun and the moon are metaphors for their characters and relationships.
Cast: Nani, Keerthy Suresh, Deekshith Shetty
Direction: srikanth odela, music: santhosh narayanan.
The film draws us into Veerlapally that is carefully built through its many characters, Avinash Kolla’s production design, cinematographer Sathyan Sooryan’s stunning frames in brown-black, earthy brownish-reds and the smart use of oil lanterns, along with Santhosh Narayanan’s rustic-meets-jazzy haunting musical score. Pay attention to the score in the cricket match that turns out to be a battle between the caste groups. Added to this, the rural Telangana dialect and the songs that mirror the region’s cultural ethos make the film all the more rooted.
As Suri and Vennela, Deekshith Shetty and Keerthy take centre stage, Nani stays in the background and the narrative is in no rush to push him to the fore. The bonding between the three is depicted beautifully, punctuated occasionally with humour. One of the earlier sequences in the police station helps to delineate the naivete of Dharani as opposed to the comparatively smarter approach by Suri.
Srikanth narrates the story of the hamlet as an insider, depicting how men are numbed by alcohol and why the fact that women voters outnumber men is actually not a reason to rejoice. Not yet. Once the power dynamics is displayed at full throttle, as expected, the underdog rises to hit back and fight for survival. When he etches his name on a sword, you cannot help but root for him.
In the latter half, a sudden shift in the relationship equation between two characters happens when you least expect it. Was it just a ‘mass’ moment to announce the arrival of a saviour? This comes after a tear-jerker sequence that seems plucked from some of the Tamil and Telugu movies of the 1990s. These are the portions in which the narrative wobbles a bit. But the narrative redeems itself in an endearing scene where Vennela questions if she has no say in her life decisions and the man, though his heart beats for her and he intended to protect her, apologises.
The quiet, understated romance that follows, sets the tone for the final encounter that runs parallel to Ravana dahanam . The motive of the antagonist is a trope that we have often seen in cinema. However, it serves to draw a parallel to the battle between Ram and Ravana.
Deekshit Shetty is a revelation as Suri and shows that he is an actor with immense potential. Dasara is no Mahanati for Keethy Suresh. Nevertheless, she is central to the drama and gives it her all. She portrays Vennela’s spring in the step as a young bride and later the quiet resignation to fate followed by resilience convincingly. Jhansi and the several supporting actors contribute by doing their parts well. The film ultimately belongs to Nani. In a completely de-glam part, watch him cower in fear and later in shame that he cannot think straight under the influence of alcohol. Several portions require him to convey his emotions with his body language and silence, and he is fantastic. In the final episode, he displays the rage of Dharani in full glory.
Dasara is not perfect. A few tropes could have been smarter. But this is a film with a lot of heart and succeeds in hitting the sweet spot between a gritty drama and a ‘massy’ mainstream film.

Dasara Movie Review: Raw and Rustic
Movie: Dasara Rating: 2.75/5 Banner: Sri Lakshmi Venkateswara Cinemas Cast: Nani, Keerthy Suresh, Dheekshith Shetty, Samuthirakani, Shine Tom Chacko, Sai Kumar, Poorna and others Dialogues: Thota Srinivas Music: Santhosh Narayanan Director of Photography: Sathyan Sooryan Editor: Navin Nooli Production Designer: Avinash Kolla Stunts: Real Satish, Anbariv Producer: Sudhakar Cherukuri Written and Direction: Srikanth Odela Release Date: March 30, 2023
Nani had never spoken so confidently about a film or toured across India to promote it before 'Dasara.' The film has received a lot of attention in recent weeks. Nani's promotion of the film gave the impression that it would be a major milestone. Is it really that good?
Let us look into it.
Story: Set in the 1990s in a village called Veerlapally in the Singareni coal mine area, the film begins with the story of three childhood friends, Dharani (Nani), Soori (Deekshith Shetty), and Vennela (Keerthy Suresh).
The villagers are always drinking and spend most of their time at Silk bar. Local politics between Rajanna (Saikumar), Shivanna(Samuthirakani) and the latter's son Chinna Nambi (Shine Tom Chacko) threaten to disrupt their lives.
What effect does a political leader's game plan have on the lives of the three friends?
Artistes’ Performances: For this film, Nani reinvented himself. He played a rustic character for the first time, which was unlike any of his previous roles. He sinks into the role and delivers an amazing outcome. The effort he has put in for the role is evident throughout, and he is the film's main pillar.
The award-winning actress Keerthy Suresh delivers another believable performance in the author-backed role. She is the central character around whom the plot revolves.
Deekshith Shetty, who plays the hero's friend, gives an effective performance. Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko has also given a good performance. There are many actors, but none of them receive adequate recognition.
Technical Excellence: The film's cinematography is the first thing that stands out because the film is entirely set in a coal mine. The dark color palette of the color scheme works so well with Sooryan's imaginative camera work.
The music by Santosh Narayanan yields mixed results. The production design is flawless, and the production values are excellent. The dialogues are neat.
Highlights: Nani’s performances Keerthy Suresh Interval bang Villain reveal scene
Drawback: Slow pace Predictable sequences Loses the steam at many places
Analysis "Dasara" makes its intentions clear from the start, with the hero entering the scene in a coal mine area and his friend assisting him. The scene establishes the story's theme of friendship, and gradually introduces the lives of the two friends, as well as the villagers addicted to alcohol in the coal mine area. It is also quickly established that the two friends are in love with the same girl, Keerthy Suresh. So, the first sections are predictable and move at a slow pace.
However, the film is more about creating atmosphere and focusing on characters than it is about plot. The design of the hero's character is impressive. He's timid and only gains courage when he consumes alcohol. And when he drinks, he loses control and can do whatever he wants. This characteristic trait of the protagonist is used so effectively in the later portions of the film, including the interval twist.
Additionally, there are cultural and social references that are properly established, such as women in Telangana performing Bhatukamma during the Dasara festival and Ravana's effigy being burnt on the festival day. The director effectively employs these cultural aspects in his storytelling.
If we take these elements out of the film, it becomes more or less a typical revenge drama. Srikanth Odela, the new director, has prioritized mood and visual palette over story.
The film's biggest surprise is the interval bang. The pre-interval chase sequence and the intermission bang are handled expertly, revealing the villain's true intentions at the start of the second half. As a consequence, the remainder becomes more predictable, and many sequences are bland. The running time is also too long, and the film definitely needs sharp editing.
Furthermore, the film, whether intentionally or unintentionally, attempts to follow the template of "Rangasthalam," but lacks the gripping screenplay that the Sukumar movie had. Caste politics are also mentioned in the film, but they are not properly established.
Additionally, the period (probably set in the 1990s) is shown as if it happened in the 60's or 70's, even though most villages had more modern facilities by the 1990s, even in remote coal mine areas.
Overall, "Dasara" is a regular revenge drama that relies more on visual style and grand making than the plot. It is watchable because of its ambition and Nani’s performance.

Dasara Movie Review – Intense melodrama works partially !
Dasara Review
Telugu360 Rating : 2.75/5
Natural Star Nani is gearing up for the biggest bet in his career. Directed by Srikanth Odela, Dasara is a rustic Telangana-based village drama. Keerthy Suresh played the leading lady and the music composed by Santosh Narayanan is a massive hit. Sudhakar Cherukuri’s SLV Cinemas are the producers and the film is hitting the screens today. Here is the review of Dasara:
Dasara is a rustic village story that revolves around three friends Dharani ( Nani) , Vennela ( Keerthy Suresh), and Suri ( Shetty). Set in 1995, the Crux of the story is how sarpanch Nambi (played by Shine Tom Chacko) impacts the lives of the lead trio. The film is set in the backdrop of singareni mines of Telangana.
Dasara film comes with a lot of expectations but meets them only partially. The village backdrop films are nothing new to us, but to give a different look to the film, the team has picked a Telangana village backdrop. The completely rustic setup came out well and the characters synchronized into the story effectively. Debutante direct Srikanth Odela has done decent work in many aspects but missed an opportunity to convert it into a great film. The story has its moments around the interval block and in post-interval scenes. The sarpanch Nambi thread came out well. The friendship and sacrifice thread of Dharani and Suri worked out for a while. Dharani’s decision in a crucial scene has much potential to generate emotions in the second half but the narration revolves around revenge drama only.
The superhit song ‘ Chamkhila Angeelesi’ comes at a serious juncture, very ineffective on the screen. The story is too simplified and lost its steam somewhere in middle. The climax fight appeals to the masses, but the closing scene (return of Nani) is a misfired one.
A noticeable strength of the film is the dialogue department; they are good in many scenes. Director Srikanth Odela has shown strength in making at Interval block and climax. The introduction train sequence with cheap graphics is a failed attempt. Santhosh Narayanan’s music and background score is good. Suryan’s cinematography is excellent. Capturing the shot effectively even in low-lighting scenes is good. Overall, this film scores well in the technical department.
Performances:
Nani delivers career-best performance; we cannot imagine anyone else in Dharani’s role. His Telangana diction is so perfect as well. Keerthy Suresh in de glamour role is just fine; a couple of her scenes are overaction. Dheekshith Shetty as suri a good casting. Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko plays the main villain character and he is good. Samudrakhani got an insignificant role. Saikumar’s role is minimal and so is Jhansi as Keerthy suresh’s mother.
- Nani’s career-best performance
- Rustic and Raw Scenes with a new backdrop
- Action Episodes are good
- Impressive dialogues
- Emotions did not work except in a couple of scenes
- Very Slow paced narration
- Predictability
Dasara is an average film with raw scenes and an authentic setup. Hero Nani’s outstanding natural performance, Debutante director Srikanth’s spark in some scenes, and action blocks compensate for the slow proceedings to an extent. The second half is a slow-paced one and tests patience here and there. Overall, a decent watch.

Dasara is a period-action-adventure film written and directed by debutant Srikanth Odela. It stars Nani and Keerthy Suresh. The film is set in the backdrop of Singareni coal mines near Godavarikhani of Telangana. The music was composed by Santhosh Narayan while the cinematography was done by Sathyam Sooryan ISC and it is edited by Navin Nooli. The film is produced by Sudhakar Cherukuri under the SLV Cinemas banner.
Natural star Nani has undergone a substantial makeover for his upcoming action thriller drama Dasara which released in theaters today. The film is promoted as a rooted and rustic action drama. Here’s our review of the film.
Dharani (Nani) and Suri (Dekkshit Shetty) are close friends who hail from the same village and love the same girl Vennela (Keerthy Suresh). Knowing Suri’s interest in Vennela, Dharani sacrifices his love and helps get them married. Are they happily married? How village politics between Shivanna and Rajanna (Sai Kumar)play a role in Dharani and Suri’s life forms the rest of the story
What about the on-screen performances?
Nani lived up to the hype with his performance. His act in the introduction scene, beedi scenes, and climax scenes is something to look out for.
Keerthy Suresh performed well, especially the special mass dance sequence by her is worth mentioning. Shine Tom Chacko as chinnaNambi is excellent as one of the antagonist. Deekshith Shetty as hero’s friend did justice to his role. Other actors in the movie did their part well.
What about off-screen talents?
Srikanth Odela attempted a honest rustic rural drama, but was not able to fully convey the emotions of love and friendship in a way that will engage an audience. The raw and rustic nature of the film demand a capable and sound filmmaker. He took two different emotions but failed to do justice to either one of them, rather ended up diluting both emotions. The narrative style that he chooses is very slow and the characterization that he designed for Nani makes it to be monotonous as the movie progresses.
The background score by Santosh Narayanan is of top-notch quality. The visuals by Sathyan Sooryan are a highlight of the film as he has delivered a grade-A job when it comes to visual composition and color grading. The dusty visuals and the rustic vibe are blended pretty well to make for a good visual experience.DOP Sathyan Sooryan’s work set the right mood for the movie as the movie carries a rustic look throughout.
What’s Hot?
- BGM is good for the most part
- Lead actors performances
- Sathyan Sooryan’s Cinematography
What’s Not?
- Director took much of cinematic liberty
- Songs does not give any break to the audience from intense drama
- Slow narration
Dasara is a rustic rural drama that weakly engages its audience on the emotional front, despite good performances from its lead cast. The wafer-thin plot and slow pacing of the film make it not much appealing, although the background music was occasionally impressive. The director is not so successful in effectively conveying the friendship and love emotions.

Dasara on Netflix Review: Nani and Santhosh Narayanan Excel In A Distracted Film
Director: Srikanth Odhela
Cast: Nani , Keerthy Suresh , Shine Tom Chacko , Dheekshith Shetty
Here are some film pitches:
A coward who hides behind his macho best friend has to come of age when his best friend is unfairly murdered. Will this coward find the courage?
A young boy finds out that his best friend and the girl of the boy's dreams are in love. Will he get them together? Will he sacrifice his love? What happens when they all find out about each other’s love?
A bar in a remote village in Telangana becomes a site of contention between a Sarpanch and two young men belonging to an oppressed caste. Will the addiction to alcohol consume them as they chase the high given by power?
Ten friends must form a motley crew of assassins to avenge the deaths of those who were unfairly killed by the powerful men in a village. This is juxtaposed against the metaphor for Dasara in which a man with ten heads was killed by one man.
Each one of these ideas can become an outstanding film by itself but writer-director Srikanth Odela’s Dasara packs all these ideas into one film and therefore what we get is an exciting world of Veerlapalli that we know thoroughly.
We know the village has a clear demarcation of caste. We know that even in the bar, the one place where men claim to drown their sorrows and boredom, they cannot drown their differences. Like gossip, we learn that Padma who lives a few houses away from the protagonists is a widow whose husband was killed and the Sarpanch nominee might be involved. We know which grandmother loves to drink a lot. We know that coal mining is the primary livelihood and that the black soot that most would gawk at is viewed as an ornament worn with pride by the villagers. We know that the Sarpanch’s wife has a comfortable life but lives with an uncomfortable truth. We even know that the local priest is the umpire in a cricket match - take that for a metaphor about India’s villages and how caste claws into everyday life.
This world-building exercise by Srikanth Odela is immersive and he makes us feel the spice in the boti curry. We smell the stench of the bar, but we also want a sip of the alcohol they are consuming. The coal mines look exhausting to work at but Odela makes us want to dive in and dance to doom dhaam dostaan with everyone.
But Srikanth Odela struggles because he’s chosen a love triangle to explore this world. Dasara tells the story of Dharani who is in love with Vennela (Keerthy Suresh). But she and Dharani’s best friend Suri are in love and as a child, Dharani “sacrifises” his love. Things take a turn for the worse when a bar and an evil Sarpanch get in the way and the two men turn towards politics.
This love triangle feels the least interesting among the many little stories in the world of Veerlapalli not just because of the similarity in its premise to Sukumar’s Aarya 2 (2009), but also because of how weakly Suri is written. He’s supposed to be the “classic” hero — stronger, braver, nobler, and amiable. And Dharani is the coward, the addict, and the man-child. So Suri’s presence should have been like that of Julius Caesar — imposing despite not being present in the scene. But sadly, his presence ends up propelling the plot and the action scenes forward rather than leave a mark.
It’s not the predictability of his fate but rather how immemorable the character is that makes the triangle least interesting. In Aarya 2 , Ajay was at least cunning - he had flavour. When he took advantage of Aarya, his presence was felt even when he wasn’t in the frame. Here the odds are so heavily tilted in favour of Dharani, the character and Nani, the star that Suri’s eventual fate never registers as a trauma but it is rather a convenient way to skip the line to reach Vennela. By setting up a weak vortex in a love triangle what we get is a straight line and this linearity in such a non-linear complex world feels cumbersome.
Similarly, Odela wants to flex cinematic moments that leave the audience spellbound. The climatic action sequence (watch out for the one where Dharani is underneath a heap of bodies), the cycling sequence near the interval, and even the opening stretch show that this debutante has the imaginative muscles to creatively show masculinity and machismo on screen. But what about image-making in emotional sequences?
A song around a funeral seems to match a similar scenario in Rangasthalam (2018). There is a scene in which Vennela finds out an important truth and Odela chooses a bizarre straightforward approach that seems out of character for the person telling her the truth. More creativity and imagination here would have the thawing of a relationship between Vennela and Dharani seem more natural. Even when Dharani barges into the villain’s house (reminiscent of Rangasthalam ) a twist is revealed to him in the least imaginative and convenient of ways.
It is to Odela’s credit that in his debut film, more is expected of him than most could expect from filmmakers in their third or fourth films. But maybe to appreciate his strengths in world-building, which make him feel like an experienced director, his weaknesses in writing needed to be spelt out.
But where the writing falters, Nani and Santhosh Narayanan push the screenplay forward. I can’t think of the last film in which Nani was disappointing and this film proves that we might have to wait longer. Never before has machismo looked so easy on a person's shoulders. Even cheesy scenes where his face lights up at the sound of Vennela’s anklets become lovable because of him. Keerthi Suresh as Vennela, after shining so brightly in the first half, struggles to bring freshness in the second half, but that is because the writer chooses to make her passive.
Similarly, Santhosh Narayanan seems to be at home driving home points when the frames struggle to convey the same. A poorly framed cricket match sequence leading up to a “hero shot” is saved once the rap music kicks in. Similarly, a melodramatic sequence right at the end is saved by a simple background score that reduces the general pitch of the scene.
Srikanth Odela knows his world inside and out. The bars, the gullies, the politics, and even the best recipes for food found in Veerlapalli. But having chosen a love triangle, he falters in doing justice to all ends of the triangle. Luckily for him, Nani and Santhosh Narayanan bridge most of those gaps making Dasara an exciting film to watch, discuss, and dissect.

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Review: Delightfully Undead Again
Tim Burton has brought the band back together — Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, even Bob the shrunken head guy — for a fun but less edgy sequel.
- Share full article
By Manohla Dargis
After more than three decades and assorted ups, downs and spinoffs like an animated series and Broadway musical , most of the key players in the original “Beetlejuice” band — Tim Burton, Michael Keaton , Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Bob the shrunken-head guy — are back together. A lot has predictably changed along the way, yet one of the enjoyable aspects about reunion tours is that when a group has charmed its way into your consciousness, like this one did back in the day, a.k.a. 1988, you don’t mind (too much) its sporadically sour notes and slack timing.
And, so, enter the dependably delightful Ryder as Lydia Deetz, the onetime Goth Girl whose family got into so much trouble the last time. Dressed in her customary black, from bangs to booted toe, her face as ethereally pale as ever, Lydia is the host of a paranormally inclined TV show, “Ghost House With Lydia Deetz,” and now a minor celebrity. She puts on a good front on camera, but Lydia remains a haunted soul, and now there’s more than memories of Beetlejuice (Keaton) that plague her: She’s a widow, and her daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), is an eyeball-rolling, heavy-sighing mini-me of gloom, one who’s just itching to have her world rocked.
Burton seems anxious to do just that, and he gets this party started without ceremony, cranking it into nicely morbid life as the characters make their introductions. Among these is the first film’s most clueless chucklehead, Lydia’s stepmother, Delia (O’Hara), an arty artist with an outsize ego and cruel lack of talent. Lydia is on warmer terms with her, partly because she needs someone on her side, given that her father is soon dead; he’s dispatched early in a satisfyingly bloody animated sequence. (The character was played in the first film by Jeffrey Jones, who pleaded guilty in 2010 to not updating his registration as a sex offender .)
Her father’s death becomes the excuse for Lydia and the rest to return to the family’s old shrieking ground, a hillside fun house with an airy porch and troublesome pests. Once there, Burton cuts loose his cheerfully malignant clowns, and the characters settle down to business with magic portals and visitors from beyond. In bland strokes, Burton et al. also toss in a few romantic complications, partly, it seems, because someone here believes that female characters require love interests. One entanglement involves Lydia and her producer-boyfriend, Rory (Justin Theroux, farcically insufferable), a mindful kick-me-sign; the other, less developed one concerns Astrid and a local cutie, Jeremy (Arthur Conti).
I don’t know why anyone thought that Beetlejuice needed any kind of love interest outside Lydia, his old crush. Whatever the case, Monica Bellucci turns up as his ex, the latest in a line of showy Burton vixens. Given her character’s soul-sucking toxicity, it’s hard not to wonder if the filmmakers are making a joke about bad divorces. Bellucci doesn’t have much to do but look hot, which is easy. Like Willem Dafoe — who’s predictably diverting playing a hammy (totally canned) dead actor — Bellucci is attractive filigree, something to admire amid the chats, chuckles and appealingly humble practical effects that still carry the touch of the human hand.
The greatest special effect remains Keaton’s Beetlejuice, however attenuated. The original movie was at once a funfair and a comic family meltdown with heart (and other body parts), but what pushed it joyously over the top was Keaton. With his deathly white face and electric-chair shock of hair, Beetlejuice had been designed to seize your attention (and maybe evoke Jack Nicholson in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”). What held you rapt, though, was Keaton’s exciting expressive range and unpredictability. With his wild eyes and raspy growl, he pushed and pulled at your affections, and made you wonder about the guy under the get-up. He seemed borderline dangerous, which gave the film frisson. Even as “Beetlejuice” playfully hit its genre notes, Keaton’s vocalizations — he spat words and all but scatted — and his twitchy physicality kept the film from slipping into the generic.

Review: Star-making performance propels Netflix revenge thriller ‘Rebel Ridge’
- Copy Link URL Copied!
In Jeremy Saulnier’s “Rebel Ridge,” a “Rambo”-inspired riff on racial profiling and the insidious banality of evil baked into American policing, the filmmaker demonstrates his mastery of the taut action thriller. His skill with this subgenre has been on display since “Blue Ruin” (2013), through “Green Room” (2016) and “Hold the Dark” (2018). But in “Rebel Ridge,” Saulnier’s examination of space and pace transcends anything that has come before, as he coolly alternates extreme control with bursts of explosive fury over the course of two-plus hours.
It’s in this cadence that Saulier’s M.O. snaps into focus: his formal cinematic expression as a reflection of his protagonist’s state of mind. The story and style of “Rebel Ridge,” which Saulnier wrote, directed and edited, centers on Terry (Aaron Pierre), a man caught in a crushingly quotidian nightmare that spins out of control. Pushed to his limit, Terry maintains his cool, until he doesn’t, and it’s a thrill to watch how Saulnier lets this character off his leash.
In a star-making performance, Pierre is terrific as a man with a particular skill set thrumming below his composed, placid surface. With golden eyes, velvet voice and smooth gait, Pierre is like a puma prowling across the screen, but ultimately his character’s temperament is much more like a rattlesnake — coiled and ready to strike when threatened.
Review: Despite its charm, ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ sequel shouldn’t have been summoned
Despite the weird and wonderful chemistry between Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton, the sequel ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ should never have been summoned.
Sept. 4, 2024
The plot engine of “Rebel Ridge” is the law enforcement practice of civil asset forfeiture. In the opening sequence, Terry is cycling through the Southern town of Shelby Springs when a police officer (David Denham) attempts to pull him over, sloppily hits Terry with his squad car, detains him and seizes the stack of cash in his backpack “under suspicion” that it’s drug money.
Terry had been carrying the cash to bail out his cousin Mike (C.J. LeBlanc) from jail, hoping to spring him before a transfer to the state penitentiary, where he’d be in dire danger as a former witness in a murder trial. But Terry’s money disappears into a property locker, where it will remain until he can contest the seizure in court, months later. A spunky young legal aide, Summer (AnnaSophia Robb), also informs him that the police department makes a habit of these seizures to fund its budget (and some margarita machines), after a civil suit resulted in a perfunctory “cleanup” of their corrupt practices.
By refusing to accept that the police department has stolen his money (and, in doing so, endangered his family) Terry has kicked a hornet’s nest, riling up a swarm of good-ol’-boy cops (including an excellent Emory Cohen), who answer to Chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson). But what these cops don’t realize is that Terry is not someone to mess with, as they discover too late that he’s not just an ex-Marine. He’s a Marine martial arts instructor.

A lot of talk of police procedure leads to the action of “Rebel Ridge,” though Saulnier seeds bursts of violence throughout as Terry seizes control. Long, gliding tracking shots with sophisticated camera and character blocking give way to hectic handheld movements as Terry scraps and tussles with his foes. Saulnier uses the edit to evoke Terry’s increasing vigilance, constantly keeping tabs on everyone in his vicinity as he realizes just how deep the corruption goes in this town.
It is this detailed discussion of mundane legal details — and how the police manipulate policy to their own benefit — that is the point of Saulnier’s film. Terry has found himself descending into a hellish odyssey of bureaucracy, paperwork and a “justice” system that relies far too heavily on the discretion of small-town cops and judges who have their own motivations and biases, and who all too easily make decisions that value budgets over human lives: Black lives, female lives, addict lives.
Within this complex system of shifting allegiances, one highly skilled man can root out the weaknesses and disrupt the food chain. But hanging over the narrative is a sense of futility, that this can and will happen again and again. Another lawsuit, another life lost, another workaround. But for a moment, one man on a bike with a few expertly wielded weapons can wreak holy havoc on corrupt cops, and damn does it feel good to watch.

Rebel Ridge Review: A Killer Action Thriller That Masterfully Builds Tension
One month into production, Jeremy Saulnier's new Netflix movie "Rebel Ridge" lost its star. Saulnier, who broke out in a big way with his second feature "Blue Ruin" and followed it up with the equally memorable "Green Room," had cast "Star Wars" actor John Boyega as the lead of his new action thriller. But then Boyega left the production, citing family reasons. It seemed like a devastating blow: Boyega is an extremely talented actor, and the prospect of him working with a filmmaker like Saulnier was exciting. But now that "Rebel Ridge" is finally here, I can say that things worked out perfectly for the film, because Boyega's replacement, Aaron Pierre, is a movie star in the making. Pierre has appeared in Barry Jenkins' acclaimed Prime Video series "The Underground Railroad," and had a brief but memorable turn as rapper Mid-Sized Sedan in M. Night Shyamalan's deliciously silly thriller "Old," but "Rebel Ridge" feels like the movie that will launch him into the stratosphere. He's electric here, commanding the screen with a tense physicalicity and a magnetic presence. We can't take our eyes off this guy; every move he makes has our attention.
The only potential wrench in this star-making performance is the fact that "Rebel Ridge" is destined to go right to Netflix instead of theaters. It has been said that we don't really have movie stars anymore, not in the old fashioned sense at least, and I think the fact that so many movies get dumped onto streaming these days has something to do with that. You can't help but think that if "Rebel Ridge" had come out more than a decade ago, and played in movie theaters across the country, Pierre would blow up in a big way. I can only hope "Rebel Ridge" doesn't fall victim to Netflix's dreaded algorithm and get lost in the shuffle, because this baby deserves an audience. Saulnier, who specializes in movies about how violence begets violence, has crafted a meticulously engaging action thriller that builds, and builds, and builds. The first hour in particular is among one of the finest things Saulnier has created: a tense, fat-free, no-nonsense chain of events that draw us deeper and deeper into a story of one man with a particular set of skills pushed to the edge.
In press notes for the film, Saulnier speaks of "Rebel Ridge" as a throwback. "As a filmmaker, I dig grounded '80s and '90s action films that not only deliver on spectacle, but succeed in tying on-screen mayhem to a real and true emotional component," the director said. "Smaller scale, bigger impact. Less veneer, less artificiality. They're rooted in a 'kick up the dust' level of craft and authenticity that I don't see often in the current space, and I was interested in making a film more like that." It will be easy to compare "Rebel Ridge," which is ultimately about a military man facing off against villainous cops, to the original "Rambo" film, "First Blood." There are also shades of the first season of Prime Video's hit series "Reacher," as well as every Western you can think of about a mysterious gunslinger who rides into a small town and bucks up against the law. But Saulnier isn't being derivative. He's putting his own unique spin on this sort of story, and the results are killer.
Rebel Ridge is about a loner battling corrupt cops
As "Rebel Ridge" begins, Pierre's character, Terry Richmond, is riding his bike into the small Southern town of Shelby Springs. Wearing earbuds, Terry is unaware that a cop car is slowly creeping up behind him. And then — WHAM! The car deliberately hits Terry, knocking him off his bike. Immediately, we are tense. Terry is a Black man in a small Southern town, suddenly being confronted by cops. Terry knows the deal: he's as calm and courteous as he can possibly be. He shows unwarranted respect to the cops who get out of the car and confront him, even though they were clearly in the wrong. Terry's deference to these lawmen doesn't have the intended effect, though: they cuff him and search him, and are surprised to find a paper bag full of a large sum of money. All the money Terry has in the world.
Terry calmly and sensibly explains that the cash is bail money: his cousin has recently been arrested, and Terry has serious reason to believe that if the cousin is transferred from the county jail to prison, his life will be in danger. Terry is clearly telling the truth, but the cops willfully refuse to buy it. Instead, they agree to let Terry go with a warning — and keep his money in the process. They tell him he can try to file a claim to get the money back, but it will likely do no good: no matter what Terry tries here, the cops are going to walk away with his cash. Terry has one of two options here: he can admit defeat and walk away a free man, or he can do everything in his power to get that money back.
Simply walking away wouldn't result in much of a movie, so Terry heads into town to try to find someone who will listen to reason. He speaks to court clerk Summer (AnnaSophia Robb), who is sympathetic but tells him he's more or less screwed. He also confronts the local good old boy police chief, Sandy Burnne, played with perfect grinning menace by Don Johnson. Burnne seems like he's willing to strike a deal with Terry, but then quickly shows his true, vile colors. Time and time again, Terry tries to do the right thing. He's calm, he's collected, he's cool. He doesn't want to cause a ruckus. But we know where this is building. We've seen too many movies to not know that sooner or later, the law is going to push Terry too far, and when we learn he's an ex-Marine who specializes in kicking ass, we shudder with anticipation of the bloodshed to come. But Saulnier isn't playing by the same tired old action movie rules here. He's trying something different.
Rebel Ridge subverts our action movie expectations
To say more would enter spoiler territory, so I'll tread carefully. What you need to know is that while "Rebel Ridge" is an action movie, the action is different than what we've come to expect from most Hollywood fare these days. For one thing, when Terry engages in hand-to-hand confrontations with characters, it looks rough and raw. These aren't the highly choreographed fight scenes of the "John Wick" franchise — they're sloppy and clumsy, which is what actual fights tend to look like in the real world. On top of that, Saulnier is deliberately avoiding a certain kind of bloodshed that we've come to expect — and a part of me wonders how that will go over with some viewers. When you strip "Rebel Ridge" down to its brass tacks, it's ultimately a movie about a Black man facing off against not just corrupt cops, but an inherently corrupt system. Saulnier's script doesn't overtly paint the cops as virulent racists, but the implications are there. As a result, there's a kind of implied catharsis in the idea of seeing a highly capable, highly skilled Black man fighting these creeps. But Saulnier seems to have designed the film to subvert our base need to see Terry lay waste to everyone who dares to push him too far. The fact that Saulnier has primarily made movies about violent men doing violent things only heightens our expectations.
That's not to say "Rebel Ridge" denies us the pleasures of watching Terry beat the living hell out of some people. The action is a release; it's a full boil after a slow simmer. Saulnier is deliberately building the tension here, and the first hour of the film, where Terry comes to town and finds trouble at every turn, no matter how hard he tries to avoid it, is dynamic and exciting. Indeed, this first hour works so well that the back half of the film suffers slightly as a result — Saulnier can only build things up for so long before he has to start paying them off, and the pay off isn't quite as engaging as the build.
Despite this, "Rebel Ridge" delivers the goods. Pierre is the film's true weapon, and the movie wouldn't work nearly as well as it does without his cool-as-hell performance. The actor has striking eyes, and Saulnier realizes this, using lots of close-ups of Terry's face as he silently works things out. Terry seems to be constantly weighing the odds in his head, calculating his next step with pinpoint precision. Because of Pierre's deliberate performance, we can sense the gears turning in his mind. "Rebel Ridge" perfectly showcases the skills of its director and star. Saulnier is very, very good at what he does, and so is Pierre, and the two of them working together has produced explosive results. Don't let "Rebel Ridge" slip through the Netflix cracks.
/Film Rating: 8 out of 10

Joker Folie a Deux first reactions out: Film gets 11-min standing ovation at Venice Film Festival but bad reviews
Joker folie a deux first reviews: joaquin phoenix and lady gaga's film has been called ‘odd’ and ‘dour’..
Joker: Folie a Deux, a musical psychological thriller film helmed by Todd Phillips, received a standing ovation of 11 minutes at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. However, the first reviews don't seem to reflect that. (Also Read | Lady Gaga proudly shows off her diamond engagement ring at Venice Film Festival ahead of Joker: Folie a Deux premiere )
Joker receives standing ovation
Joaquin, Lady Gaga and Todd were congratulated by an ecstatic theatre crowd at the Sala Grande, receiving an incredible 10.5-minute standing ovation, as per news agency ANI. As per the report, throughout the ovation, the audience occasionally erupted in yells of "Ga-ga, Ga-ga, Ga-ga!" During interruptions in the chants, others exclaimed, "Gaga, we love you!". The actor-singer thanked and blew kisses to fans.
No unanimous praise for Joker 2
Even though the film received a long standing ovation, it couldn't get good reviews. Hollywood Reporter wrote in its review of the film: 'Gaga is a compelling live-wire presence'. However, the film is called ‘dour’ that ‘desperately needs’ regular interventions from the lead characters' songs.
The Guardian review panned Phoenix’s performance ‘as single-note as before’. It added that it ‘certainly as forceful and his screen presence is potent.’
Indie Wire's called it, ‘boring, flat, and such a criminal waste of Lady Gaga that we should demand a public hearing’.
Variety, in its review , called it ‘an overly cautious sequel’ that is ‘desperate-to-be-darkly-irreverent but actually rather clunky and earthbound musical sequel’.
About Joker
The first Joker was a huge success, both critically and commercially. It was nominated for 11 Oscars, with Joaquin Phoenix winning Best Actor and Hildur Gudnadottir winning for Original Score. It became the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever.
Joaquin reprises his role as Joker in the sequel, and Lady Gaga joins as Harley Quinn. The supporting cast includes Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey. Zazie Beetz returns as Sophie from the first film. Joker: Folie a Deux will release on October 4.

Ps5 ‘astro bot’ reviews: it’s the best game of the year.
While everyone was hoping that Sony’s Astro Bot would be good, I’m not sure anyone was predicting what’s happened here. And we’re now seeing an enormous win for PlayStation in a week where it badly needs one.
As it stands, with dozens of Astro Bot reviews in, it is currently the best scoring full game of the year. It has a 94 metascore , rocketing it into GOTY contention, if not being a clear frontrunner at the moment. It’s being called one of the best platformers ever, right up there with the classics, and the reviews are just absolutely glowing.
That 94 score does indeed put it as the best-reviewed game of the year, if you’re not counting Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion as a full game, which most won’t, and that has a 95. Here’s the list of “game” games:
- Astro Bot – 94
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – 92
- Animal Well – 91
- Balatro – 90
- Thank Goodness You’re Here! – 90
- Tekken 8 – 90
- Tactical Breach Wizards – 90
- Like a Dragon – Infinite Wealth – 89
- Lorelei and the Laser Eyes – 88
- Minishoot Adventures – 87
Goldman Sachs Issues Huge Fed Crash Warning As A Legendary Trader Suddenly Flips His Bitcoin Price Prediction
Northern lights alert: solar activity surges to strongest for 23 years, apple iphone 16: unexpected design change leaked in new report.
It’s been an odd year so far. You can see that most of those are indies with fewer reviews counted, and the scores I omitted are for “definitive collections” or remasters which I’m not going to count. And an expansion or two like Elden Ring’s or Destiny 2’s The Final Shape. But if we’re talking about full games, GOTY-potential games, Astro Bot is on top.
At the time of this writing, Astro Bot has 29 10/10 scores out of 78 reviews. Here’s one that sums a lot of it up, a perfect 10 from VGC:
“Astro Bot isn't simply an enjoyable platformer with some nostalgia tying it together; it's a generationally impressive entry in the genre that understands PlayStation at an atomic level. The sheer level of joy the game produces makes it impossible to compare it to anything other than Mario's very best adventure. Astro is no longer a vector through which to reference PlayStation icons; he is a PlayStation icon.”
There is only one score below an 8, a 7.8/10 from GamersRD. There are only seven scores below a nine period.
So, it’s a critical smash hit, and we’ll see if it’s a sales one as well. Players are hoping this game reviewing this well, and hopefully with revenue to match, will further push Sony and other publishers into more solid single-player games than endlessly chasing live service titles, so many of which have failed spectacularly as of late. The contrast between Astro Bot and Concord this week alone is absolutely wild. I cannot wait to play.

Joker: Folie à Deux review – "An unconventional musical sequel that fails to hit the high notes"
GamesRadar+ Verdict
Part courtroom movie, part behind-bars romance, Folie à Deux is an unconventional musical sequel that fails to hit the high notes.
Why you can trust GamesRadar+ Our experts review games, movies and tech over countless hours, so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about our reviews policy.
Joker: Folie à Deux has premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. Here's our review...
"Let’s give the people what they want," says Lady Gaga’s Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzel (aka Harley Quinn) at a key juncture in Joker: Folie à Deux. It’s a perverse statement for a film that seems stubbornly committed to giving audiences quite the opposite.
The much-anticipated sequel to Todd Phillips’ Oscar-winning box-office champ is a bold departure from its lauded/loathed predecessor, but it’s also a far less effective vehicle for its tragi-comic subject and lead actor. Two years after his murder spree, Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is now committed to Arkham State Hospital’s brutal E-Ward, awaiting trial and a potential death sentence if peacocking DA Harvey Dent (Harry Lawtey) has his day in court.
In music-therapy class Arthur meets Lee and sparks soon fly – literally when his arsonist admirer tries to burn Arkham down as an act of love; later, she becomes Joker’s biggest cheerleader in court.
Beyond the inclusion of Lee – here stripped of the character’s usual hallmarks and reduced to a spectator for much of the film – Folie à Deux’s biggest swing is that it’s a jukebox musical, featuring '60s chart-toppers and Golden Age Hollywood hits. Arthur and Lee break into song with relentless regularity, and when there hasn’t been a spot of spontaneous warbling for five minutes, a fantasy dance sequence is typically moments away.
These stylized soundstage numbers are exquisitely shot – as is the rest of the film – by returning DoP Lawrence Sher. Gaga, likewise, gives them her all. But song and dance isn’t Phoenix’s forte and there isn’t enough razzle-dazzle to the choreography or staging to impress on a technical level.
Of the other musical crimes, reducing Hildur Guðnadóttir's sublime doomstrings score to second chair deserves a spell in Blackgate Penitentiary, particularly when it so perfectly rendered Arthur’s mental state in the first film.
Even worse, musical numbers are frequently deployed as the dramatic crescendo of a given scene. The upshot is that the pacing and momentum in otherwise dramatically compelling sequences – a tense interview with Steve Coogan’s needling TV host Paddy Meyers being an example – is derailed as Arthur changes gear to put his thoughts into song, with most tracks seemingly selected for their painfully on-the-nose lyrics. Rarely has a film been so senselessly devoted to sabotaging its rich set-ups with flat pay-offs.
Unlike 2019’s Joker, a knotty film with big ideas and profound empathy for its central figure, Folie à Deux feels smaller and more insular. Gone is the sense of Arthur’s explosive transformation mirroring a Gotham City at a tipping point. The film hardly even ventures beyond the claustrophobic walls of Arkham or the courthouse.
Instead, it’s focused on the Arthur/Joker dichotomy – who is really in control? And can Lee tip the balance? However, given how few true ‘Joker’ sequences feature, it’s clear where Phillips’ interests lie. Folie à Deux wants Arthur to reckon with the consequences of his (admittedly very criminal) actions and seems content for him to suffer without any of the first film’s devilishly transgressive catharsis.
The result is resoundingly downbeat to the point of feeling mean-spirited. There’s no question Folie à Deux is a film made with integrity and an uncompromising vision, but evidently they can’t all be hits.
Joker: Folie à Deux is released in US theaters and UK cinemas on October 4.
